issue. The cover and cover story is "Beneath the Planet of the Apes:
Exciting Sequel". If anyone is interested, go to

initially posted to this group for another lot of POTA stuff, but
I've really being enjoying the discussion here...this is a LIVELY

Which cover would that be? I had the original issue that had the Gorillas
sitting in council from Beneath the Planet of the Apes. I wish I still had
that and my All Apes issue of The Monster Times. <.html

See Fight Club. Immediately.

It am a conspiracy.

The remake was a beautiful and reverent creation compared to the "special
edition" we're talking about. One of the original creators cut out 15
minutes from NIGHT, added 15 minutes of new footage, and replaced the score
with a cat walking across a piano. Escape from LA was easier to sit through.

I liked the 1990 remake because it wasn't an exact remake. I would have liked

Never saw that one . . . Good thing too. Sounds lame. I wonder if the
re-release of The Exorcist will be worth seeing. They didn't even add 15
mins. Ten or eleven I believe. It supposed to be more faithful to the book,
but I can't see even going to a matinee for ten extra minutes. It'd have to
be a very exciting 10 minutes! <.html

read all I can about Apes, have all the films, etc., etc., and I must
say, it's fantastic to find a cool site like this to discuss thing
with other fans. I will try to keep my posts interesting, hopefully
informative, and in good taste. I have been on boards that have
deteriorated into name calling, etc., and I don't go for that stuff,
it's pointless. Anyway, I don't have anything really to ramble on
about, so let me just say hello, and it's nice to be here. Oh, one
thing though, after seeing most modern "Science Fiction" movies, I
have serious reservations about the remake. Does anyone else? Cheers!

Yes. I do. Even though my posts about it have raised some negative responses,
I'm going to be honest. I'm not just going to run out and see anything just
because it says Planet of the Apes on it. I want quality for my money, not
just SFX and outrageous BS. <.html

Hi Guy!
Don't worry too much about being tasteful, just keep it interesting. I had a
knock down drag-out, with Alex I believe -- he'll correct me if I'm wrong --
about the infamous love scene in the new film. He wrote me afterwards, to
say it was all in the spirit of good-natured discussion--sorry if I'm giving

interesting posts I ever been involved in or scene on any group. I've been
trying to get that thread going again, but I guess we've covered every

like SFX and outrageous BS. I just hope there's a story in there somewhere

For some reason it never really grabbed me.
Back to POTA stuff... I think that I will probably go and see the
new POTA if for only curiosity sake alone. If the movie is a
bomb, it will be a real shame. We've all heard the saying that
its easier to destroy than create and it seems that the thing that
Tim Burton will be destroying will be the viability of any POTA
vehicles in the future.
For some reason, I have an image of Tim in front of Dr. Zaius in his
office trying to explain why he soiled the reputation of good apes
everywhere! ;)
Dr. Z. "Even through your lies some truth slips through"
Tim. "What do you mean?"
Dr. Z. "You claim to be a director of "fine film" but you create
this claptrap which claims to be a remake..."
Tim. "What about it?"
Dr. Z. "A Remake?!? Only in your own mind!!!"
Tim. "This whole thing is insane! What have I done???"

That's so funny! I can hear Maurice Evans say those exact words. I was really
looking forward to this movie but now you all have me skeptical. And you're
right, most remakes I have seen have been horrible. I actually "paid" to see
Psycho. But I will see the new one for sure... I just hope it's good. Also,
does anyone know anything about the POTA video game coming out for
Playstation? I saw the previews to it on the apes dvd and have seen some cgi
art of the characters and it looks like it will be good. I think it's coming
out in 2001 also.

just dropping by, in my occasional ventures near the computer.
The remake rumbles on I see....
I might go and see it. The trouble is by the time I've paid for my ticket,
the dirty stinking producers will have made their monry outta me. Oh well...
Novel: have prodded it again recently, now 1/3 through 3rd draft. I have
made some small changes. It's now going as a literary novel, as my reviwer
thinks I'll get further.
I liked the remake sketches. There ought to be a gallery of them somewhere.
If the film's good it'll be parodied everywhere. If not, then Burton's film
will be a parody.

.html good morning to all! 628 am here in lovely tucson. hope everyone is
having a relaxing weekend. a year or so ago, i won the entire pota tv
series on ebay, 7 vhs tapes, 2 episodes per tape. unfortunately, the
guy ripped me off, i knew they were dubs, but geez! they had
commercials in 'em and worse, the audio and video quality were about
a 4 on a scale of one to ten! had to trash them, but recently bought
them from another guy on yahoo auctions, 14 eps on 7 tapes. he's
gotten good reviews from other folks, so i am crosing my
fingers....but man, what i wouldn't give for the entire run on dvd or
ntsc tapes at the least. whch episode was it that was not shown
during the series' original run? WHY WERE THERE DOGS RUNNING AROUND
POST CONQUEST 1991??????? minor quibble, i actually love the show, of
course. don't know if anyone surfs the auctions, but a lot of cool
stuff shows up, including the japanese laserdisc of the extended
battle, etc....by the way, does anyone know what happened to austin
stoker (macdonald from battle)? i know he was in a handful of 70's
flicks (assault on precinct 13 for one!) and performed on return to
the pota, but he seems to have disappeared....curious.....internet
movie database (www.imdb.com) does not have all that much info....
can't wait to get the tv series in the mail hopefully this week.
cheers, all!

The astros from that show were actually in an alternate reality that branched
off from Battle for the Planet of the Apes. In this reality, once Caesar died
and the apes took over, humans retained the power of speech but became second
class citizens. Also there is a secret, technological society of humans who
hide from the apes, but secretly are plotting their overthrow to retake the
planet. It's these humans who used stored cells from dogs to recreate them
(and cats, cat lovers) after tinkering with their genetics to make them
immune to the remnants of the plague. Eventually Virdon and Burke meet up
with them, the humans release a virus which wipes the intelligence from
Gorillas and Orangs and the humans and chimps form a new society based on

about the remake:
1) The ape princess thingie. I really like the hierchy they had in the
original.
2) The 'rethinking' thing. This one is the worst. If the person rethinking
is not an Ape fan, but a money grubbing exec, we are in some serious
trouble, folks! If they keep the original tempo, attitude, I'm gonna be
okay. Even a different perspective wouldn't be too bad, like from the
humans perspective. The gorillas in the first one gave me nightmares just
seeing them go after the humans..it would be kick to see them actually come
at the camera as if at a human. That sort of thing.
I read the script short on Alex's site..I think it would be hard to see on
film...maybe too much tecnobabble.

good morning to all!

The astros from that show were actually in an alternate reality that
branched
off from Battle for the Planet of the Apes. In this reality, once Caesar
died
and the apes took over, humans retained the power of speech but became
second
class citizens.
Eventually Virdon and Burke meet up
with them, the humans release a virus which wipes the intelligence from
Gorillas and Orangs and the humans and chimps form a new society based on
peace and mutual respect. Virdon and Burke become leaders in this new
society, Galen marries a nice female chimp and settles down as a teacher and
writes his memoirs. <.html

Yes Lynne, the Ewok factor scares the piss out of me too. I hope that the
love scene with the chimpette princess will eliminate any possibility of that
creeping in. I know some fans will disagree, but I'd rather have some adult
content. I'm not interested in ruining a good film to sell more toys. I'd
rather Zira, Cornelius, Nova and Taylor have an orgy then have that happen to
it. Not that they should have a porno version -- Planet of the Rapes or
anything like that. I'm optimistic about it.
Thanks to superior production values and top notch actors, nobody even
remembers what movie The Maltese Falcon is a remake of. Not that that will
ever happen to Apes. I just hope the don't put any surprise ending on the
poster! Do you hear me Fox!!!!! <.html

Aussie system is PAL (which also plays on SECAM - the British System). If
this is not clear, maybe get in touch with a store which sells VCRs.

.htmlI must say I saw Mad Max (didn't the US rename it as The Road Warrior, or
was that Mad Max 2?) in 1983 when my father was studying a Wright Patterson
in Ohio. I was AMAZED that there were US voice overs - but a lot of people
in the US sure had trouble understanding much I said so maybe it was all for
the best??
I'd love to hear your opinion of the movie with the original dub.
Michael (from, for those of you who missed it, Australia).

Yes, I look forward to the day when all VCRs will play any tape in any
format, be it PAL, NTSC, or SECAM. I've got my eye on an undubbed version
of
Mad Max with the original Aussie accents. Now what's all this about Virdon
and Burke becoming leaders in this new society and Galen marring a nice
female chimp and settling down as a teacher and writing his memoirs. What
vieo format is that on? I must have missed it. <.html

Hadn't ever seen Mad Max until I got to see it on the big screen earlier
this year. Enjoyed it immensely. Watched parts of the dubbed version
afterward and was surprised that it didn't suck too badly.

I actually have all the '74 series on tape...8 times over in fact. I ran 2
VCR's and taped every time Sci-Fi ran it. The only problem is that I'm in
FL and they are in MI at a friends until I get settled either here or there.
They turned out fine, but I have to admit that I, too, tape commercials.
It's fun to go back and see how things were at the time. Still, a boxed set
of POTA '74? I can't resist!!!

| Subject: Lots o' Odds & Ends |
.htmlHi all,
I've been a bit short on posting these past few weeks, but as I look
over some of the other things people have written I've come up with a few
thoughts/observations/ questions I'd like to throw by everyone. Please
feel free to reply or ignore.
Anyway:
1) A few weeks back, Alex posted a picture showing one of the sets from
Hello Dolly that was later used in BENEATH (the large staircase that
became the altar in St. Patrick's Cathedral). If you look at the photo of
the set in Hello Dolly, you'll see a small alcove/ doorway on the face of
the left side of the staircase. Now, if you look in the BENEATH graphic
novel that Malibu released in 1991, some of the original production
sketches were included in the back. One of them (lower right Page 135) is
a drawing of the inside of the church with the alcove in almost the exact
same place. Coincidence? Or perhaps the person doing the sketches already
knew the sets from Hello Dolly were being used. Is there anyone on the
list that can shed some light on this?
2) Being somewhat of a fan of late night TV and also NYPD Blue (best show
on television right now BTW), I watch the syndicated reruns on Channel 2
from NYC on Saturday night (the same station I first saw the POTA movies
on once upon a time). There are two commercials shown quite frequently,
one with a with a man and one with a woman, sound asleep in bed with the
narration saying "They should've called 540-WAKE). Anyway, the voice over
for the one with the man says "In other news, Cryrogenics was going to
promote George Taylor today but he didn't show up for work. Company
officials are concerned". Again, coincidence? Or perhaps the person who
had to write the ad copy is a POTA fan and decided to write an "in" joke.
You could even argue that the name of the company is an indirect
reference to the crew being placed in hibernation.
Maybe Taylor showed up late for work, and instead of getting the
promotion got sent on the space flight instead. It could happen.
3) Book update- I'm happy to announce that the long awaited PLANET OF THE
APES REVISITED will FINALLY be released July 2001. It will be in
hardcover format with color photos and include (hopefully anyway) the
definitive POTA timeline written by yours truly. As I receive more
updates I'll pass them along.
4) Research project that I need an answer on ASAP- Several years back, I
received a mail order catalog from a place that specializes in vinyl
soundtracks. In it was a supposed soundtrack release for BATTLE. I called
the place to make sure it wasn't a misprint and the guy told me no. As
far as he knew, it contained both music and dialogue much like the
BENEATH Lp did. Of course, I was more than broke at that point so I
couldn't pick it up. Does anybody know if this item actually exists? If
so, please e-mail me privately at lawford42@....
4) I remember reading that an upcoming issue of Starlog was going to
feature an interview with Natalie Trundy. Has this come out yet, and if
so could someone provide me with the details?
5) For anyone who has the Film Score Monthly BENEATH soundtrack and also
a copy of the original BENEATH trailer: Did you notice that the music
used in the last scene of the trailer where the statue of the Lawgiver
falls down is the same music that Rosenman originally composed for the
scene (which ended up not being used in the final cut). Either it was
originally in that scene and later taken out, or maybe Rosenman was
involved with the production of the trailer. For a trailer (usually
assembled when the film is still in post-production), I wouldn't expect
to hear the music composed for a specific scene actually used for that
same scene. There's usually just one theme played throughout the duration
of the spot.
6) During filming of ESCAPE, do you suppose the cast and crew kidded
director Don Taylor about his last name. "Hey, how are we going to light
this?". "I don't know, let's ask TAY-LOR!!. Hey Bright-Eyes, how do you
want to do this?". To which he would reply: Shut Up! SHUT UP!!!!!
Ahhh!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! (Sam Kinison scream).
7) Somewhere recently I saw a reproduction of an ad used to get TV
stations to buy the POTA TV movies culled from the series, but for the
life of me I can't remember where. Did someone post a link recently?
Maybe it was in the paperback version of Eric Green's book? Anyone?
Anyone? Bueller?
8) To the guy making the Ape Polls: How about one where we rank the five
movies in order of personal preference. I'm interested to see what other
Ape fans consider their personal favorite. And just to get the ball
rolling, here's mine:
1) BENEATH
2) PLANET
3) BATTLE
4) CONQUEST
5) ESCAPE
OK, I think I've rambled on enough for one post (plus there's quite a few
others I have to respond to). So, adios!
Later,
Chris L.

I had them all too at one time, but the quality was so bad, I trashed
them. The guy from Yahoo Auctions that I just bought the new set from, which
I'm waiting for in the mail, got all good feedbacks, so I am crossing my
fingers. I don't mind commercials, actually, I just am not too wild about TV
networks editing the shows down so they can show MORE of them to make the
All Important Dollar from sponsors. The old set was from SCI FI Channel, and
I am expecting the new set to be from it as well. Can't wait to see them,
all of them, not just the 5 or so of the 14 that I've already seen. (I'll
rewatch those, though, of course!) I vaguely remember seeing them as a kid
(born 11/67), so I agree, it IS fun to watch stuff from that time. Brings
back a lot of memories....sigh... You are 100% right, I'd love to see an
NTSC VHS, or even better, a DVD box set of the COMPLETE RUN! But, guess
we'll have to wait and see. Glad they're available in dubbed form at least,
in any case. Cheers!

Sorry, no ideas on 1-7!!! But, my favorite 5 films, in order, are:
1) Planet
2) Conquest
3) Battle
4) Beneath
5) Escape
This changes on a regular basis, though Escape usually holds firm in the 4
or 5 position.....I am one of the few(?) folks that absolutely loves Battle,
Paul Williams and all!!! Come on, John Huston, Lew Ayres (Caesar forbids
youuuuu!!!!!!), Natalie Trundy, Severn Darden, Austin Stoker, France Nuyen,
CLAUDE AKINS and the rest!!!!!??? A great cast, and I am NOT kidding, nor am
I forgetting the late, great Roddy McDowall. The version that retains all
the BOMB references is the best version, IMHO. Turns up on the online
auctions every so often, well worth getting! Cheers!

Have done a marathon of all
five movies a couple of times, so why not? Careful with the caffeine consumption
if you're watching with a friend, though, the debates could get really out of
hand!!!!! Hey, where'd this Urko guy come from, and how come no one can ever
tell the difference between Ursus, Aldo (Er, I mean GENERAL Aldo), and
Urko?????See what I mean???
Pete
Go for it, Pete!! If you have slo-mo,a good slo-mo, that's
fun too!! I watched practically all the '74 series in slo-mo, a riot! I was
house sitting and had to stay up all night one night. Saw the first two or
three and had to do them all when I had the chance. Coffee helps some, too!

recently become an ape addict and ordered all the malibu comics I could find

I hope the new Apes movie is good and it will spark a huge interest back into
the shows and they will put the tv series and cartoons out on dvd.

adaptations are from the shooting scripts, so there are some cool difference
there as well, notably Breck instead of Kolp in Battle. The Adventure comics
of the 90's are fair to poor. Some good ideas, just not well executed at
all. Hoknes is sometimes late in shipping, but he's away from home a lot.
Otherwise, a reliable guy, whose stock is usually as described, bought all

.htmlGlad to assist. The original series Marvel ran were "Terror on the Planet of
the Apes", "Kingdom on the Planet of the Apes", and "Future History
Chronicles", all written with psychotic way out there flair by Doug Moench.
The first concerns the adventures of a pair of teens, the human Jason, and
the chimp Alexander, who are on the run from the gorilla Brutus. Started
good, got a bit long winded, out of focus towards the end. Still, lots of
good 70's style WEIRD STUFF!!! Second series is bad, IMHO, King Arthur type
apes on an island......not good at all! The third is by far the most insane,
involves apes on city ships, a top hatted gorilla, pirates, etc. You get the
jist of it I am sure.......Worth getting, lots of cool articles in the maga
as well. Pricey though, I stuck with the copies in "fair" condition. Like
lots of other stuff, the complete run of 29 issues sometimes appears
relatively cheaply on ebay, bidders edge, etc. Avoid the 90's stuff, but if
you must get some, buy the Blood of the Apes or Urchak's Folly
miniseries.......Cheers!

I've written scattered things, notes mostly, trying to get something going in my head. I do have a fanzine here that I picked up at a convention a few years back with two excellent stories in it. It was a duo zine paired with 'Garrison's Gorillas' stories, written by Ron Harper fans. Wonderful!! Has anyone ever seen it? When my schedule allows me this week to write letters, I'll see if I can contact them to see if I can post them to Alex's site. Or maybe they can contact the site. Very, and I mean *very* good reading!!
Anyone else brave enough to write stories for the site? Maybe a round-robin? I'd love it!!

The Roddy McDowall "Biography" on A&E (shown again a couple of weeks
ago as part of "Bat-week" (Roddy played the Bookworm on the '60s
Batman TV show)) shows a 20- or 30-second clip of Carol asking Roddy
(in full makeup and waring a tux) how he is. I remember watching that

.html Hey kids,
A piece of trivia:
During the audio commentary on the "Kentucky Fried Movie" DVD, director,
John Landis confirms that he did appear in "Battle". He's credited as
"Jake's friend" but I was never sure if it was really him or not. After
playing the title role in "Shlock" you'd think they would have given him an
ape role.
see you next Wednesday....
Best,
KEN
P.S. First "Planet", then "Beneath" then "Escape" followed by "Battle"
(complete version) with "Conquest" as my least favourite. <.html

something going in my head. I do have a fanzine here that I picked up at
a convention a few years back with two excellent stories in it. It was a
duo zine paired with 'Garrison's Gorillas' stories, written by Ron Harper
fans. Wonderful!! Has anyone ever seen it? When my schedule
allows me this week to write letters, I'll see if I can contact them to see if
I can post them to Alex's site. Or maybe they can contact the
site. Very, and I mean *very* good reading!!
I wouldn't mind at all, let me know.

The staircase where Brent is interrogated is also used (filmed from behind)
in an episode of Land of the Giants. Malachi Throne leads a race of other
giants who are technologically advanced and live underground. The set was
painted bright blue. In fact, Irwin Allen wanted to use as many sets from
Beneath as he could as a money saving move. I saw this episode on the Sci Fi
channel so if the show is repeated viewers may want to keep an eye out. <.html

The Forbidden Zone site has the superb Marvel timeline written in one of the
magazines. The only complaint I had about them (my originals are long gone)
is that the adaptation of Planet had the worst art work. George Tuska really
stunk. When Alfredo Alacala (who recently died) took over inking duties, the
art got much better. Battle also had poor art. <.html

I'm writing one called "Freak" that will be posted on the site soon. It takes
place some 1500 years after the death of Ceasar and that's all I'm saying. <.html

As Fox did the Planet of the Apes sequels, since they were guaranteed money
makers, the budget was lower and lower. The suits the apes wore in Conquest
were from Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, and the CD armbands they wore were
the Time Tunnel armbands turned sideways. Battle had about as much budget as
the average TV movie.
Does anyone have the excellent Apes Archives cards? They are great! <.html
