"Kris Kristofferson is the latest addition to the cast of Tim
Burton's remake of Planet of the Apes. According to Variety columnist
Michael Fleming, Kristofferson is playing the part of a human warrior
who is leading a revolt against the apes. After he wraps his work on
Apes, the actor will move over to Blade 2."

I'm really bummed about the TV series level of human this film sounds
like it's gonna have.

Well, talking humans was one of the things that turned me off to the T.V.
Series, but if the film has a good script, it may have a fighting chance.

On tonight's Jeopardy!, in Double Jeopardy!, the category
is "The Movies". 1st question, for $200, "This simian themed series
was released on DVD under the title "The Evolution". Last night's
winner chimes in with "What is The Planet of the Apes?" (DUH!!!)
Strangely enough, the next question, for $400, is a Video with
something along the lines of "I was the voice for the lead character
in this Tim Burton holiday classic." Some more simian symetry! John

Well, that's viewpoint as well.
If mankind is evil enough to blow themselves to kingdom come, how the hell
would Apes be able to rule overthem.
If man is smart enough to talk, he's smart enough to think.
And that's all it takes...

But then again if it's a good script, it will be a good movie.
So we'll just have to see, regardless I'll be there at the box office buying
my ticket you can count on that.

I'm with you there Alex, since the movie doesn't exist yet I can't knock it.
I'm hoping for a good script and good movie. I'm pretty open to a differant
take, although my first love is PLANET. I guess that openess comes from the
fact that movie PLANET is already differant from the book by Boulle. Each
seems like variations on a theme. I've heard mention of an airship in the
new movie. Cool. - Jeff

Okay guys I've just purchased a program that allows me to put together music videos! So if you loved the CD, get ready for POTA music Videos!

Each will run around 10 megs each and will run for about 3 to 4 minutes each, and will be in AVI, MPG or Quick Time. I haven't made up my mind yet. Also I'm trying to see If I can make a Music Video on VHS or VCD (Video CD).

VCDs can play on most DVD players, but I'm still trying to figure out how to make a VCD format. Any thoughts?

I'll keep you all posted.

The New York Daily News has a bit where it states that Kris
Kristofferson has been cast a the leader of the human rebellion.
Anyone hear about this? This is the first bit of casting that I
absolutely do not agree with. Mr. K. seems to be an adequate actor,
but I think the last time I saw him was in the miniseries "Amerika"
where he leads the rebellion against the Soviet ruled U.S. "How do
you kill an idea, General Ursus?" I got a bad feeling about this bit
of info. Later, John

I would have to agree with you there.
I never did like Kris Kristofferson very much, and as for the human
rebellion role, it only goes to show that these humans will be talking and
no doubt thinking very clearly. I only hope the script holds up.

And I agree with Jeff, best formula is mute humans and talking apes and when
talking apes and talking humans come together as in Beneath....
Caaaaa!! Boooom!! The revolution begins.
Having a revolution begin 2000 years after apes rule is a little too hard to
believe. But lets see what Burton and Zanuck have up their sleeves, you
never know.

 Hey Guys (and Lynne) - - -

Yeah, "Ape Has Killed Ape" is a great band. I met creator Matt Stein through Eric Greene. I introduced Matt to Bill Blake and Natalie Trundy and for a while there Bill performed in ape makeup and costume and Natalie played maracas (I think about 5 performances). It was surreal and Matt thanks us on his "Mattricide" CD. Let me dig up his e-mail for those who want to order his CD (the songs aren't about POTA but include POTA samples). Matt even printed up some "Ape Has Killed Ape" t-shirts, one with Arthur Jacobs lighting Zira's cigarette.

  "Jeopardy" : That's off topic!

Talking Humans: That's not a death sentence for the movie. It sounds like Burton is going for an allegory on prejudice, and not on human/animal relations like in the first one. The first movie has been done! It'll work, everybody, one, two, three...IF THE SCRIPT WORKS.

ifilm's "Scoop": Sounds preposterous. Heston's part probably isn't that major and he probably isn't taking the film that seriously. The "scoop" is fiction, obviously an allegory on conservatism. The synergy between Heston and Zanuck on the first film has been done!

Check out movieheadlines.com. Today they say the apes are more primitive than the original ("beastly", as Cornelius would say) and Wahlberg wears a spacesuit through most of the movie, not a loincloth. Sounds like Burton wants to blur the line between "savage" and "civilized" to make his prejudice allegory more effective . The website also hints that the movie is actually set in the past )a la Oliver Stone's version)! It's enough to mess with your head.

The report (from E! online) says the trailer could hit today, though I feel Fox would save it for their big Tom Hanks flick "Cast Away" (written by William (POTA) Broyles and set for Dec. 22).

The report (from E! online) says the trailer could hit today, though I feel Fox would save it for their big Tom Hanks flick "Cast Away" (written by William (POTA) Broyles and set for Dec. 22).

Cool,
E! has a program called coming attractions. This program always shows the latest movie trailers.

So much for pressing time on a superbowl commercial, hell, it will be out before then. Most Excellent!

Thanks for the info Jeff, if I capture it on VHS I'll make a Media Clip of it for the site for all to check out. And for sure a music video.

I'll be unsubscribing from the e-group for a while, I'm switching to cable internet service tomorrow so this e-mail will be over and done with.
I'll return after the new year as I'll be finishing the classical section on the site and get started on the remake site shortly after.

Happy Holidays Ape-O-nauts!

Weirder?
Tell me about it, Walhberg travels 2,000 years in the PAST not in the
future.
What did the apes do?
Kick the crap out of the Roman Empire??

Dude, this is weird.
Damn I love it!! A complete mystery!! According to E! News the ending is
going to be as shocking as the Statue of Liberty climax!

I have a funny feeling that not only the script is going to be great, but
this film is going to be KICK ASS!! Can't wait to see the trailer!

I just watched "Edward Scissorhands" on DVD. Though "Pee Wee's Big
Adventure" is still my favorite Burton flick, "E. S." is probably his best
(or "Ed Wood"). Anyway, I noticed a similarity to "Escape" in the storyline.
The Visitor is first shocking, then feted as unique, made a celebrity, used
("the voters love them" - "Escape"), then turned into a threat and forced to
flee for his life. At one point, referring to TV, the wife says, "Damn them"
and the husband says "Damn them all to hell". Many of the Ed Scissorhands
folks ( composer Danny Elfman, costumer Colleen Atwood, etc.) are currently
doing "Apes". - - - - - Jeff Krueger

Better than being blown up by a great big bomb! I'd sure take that over
getting shot and blown up any day. And he could alyway have secret
conversations with Zira if he feels the need for a chat. Doesn't sound so

I forget which of you had asked, but here are the quotes I've received (from our freight contractor) for sending
the LAWGIVER COURTROOM BUST  to Australia:
  • Brian,

  • Have a quote for you regarding the bust shipment to Australia.  These
numbers are from your location in Chatsworth to Brisbane or Sydney
exclusive of customs clearance and delivery charges.  I would need
address's in Australia to provide those costs.  I am still waiting for a
costs on crating should you want a wooden crate.  This would increase the
costs.  I think a well packed box would be fine for air freight.
            Chatsworth to Brisbane - $380.50
            Chatsworth to Sydney - $319.79

Any questions or additional costs, please let me know...(Cargo rep)

That's it.  I didn't want to leave you hanging.

Hey, Ken Taylor:  Did FOX Australia hold onto the 30th anniversary Chimp outfits we made for the tour?  Two of them and some gorillas turned up at an unclaimed freight auction here in LA back during the summer, so it has me wondering where all the others went.  We made a total of 8 (4 Male, 4 Female chimps) for them.  The Gorillas were made by another company for the tour.  I'm not sure how many of those were made.  I saw 4 at the LA screening.

Word to the wise: "Question authenticity of gorilla and chimp outfits popping up on eBay in the weeks to come."  Originals will have WESTERN COSTUME  labels in them.  Our replica chimp outfits will have Make-up & Monsters labels in them.  The Gorilla's (made for AMC/FOX's 30th anniversary tour) will have another company's label (from Florida or another southern US state), I don't have the name handy but I'll find out for anyone interested.

Anyhoo, Happy Holidays to all.

      Hey Chimpaninnies - - -

The new "Makeup Artist" magazine has a blurb about Brian Penikas' quick
thinking when there was an injury on a set recently. He remember what he'd
learned about emergency makeup removal to allow medics to assist the
      injured. Way to go, Brian!

The issue also mentions the fatal fall of Paul Trachtenburg while painting
an "Apes" remake set, and that photography started on Nov. 6 in Arizona
(Rick Baker and Co. weren't able to attend the "Grinch" premiere, which was
also Nov. 6, because of "Apes". Linda Harrison told me it actually started
filming on Nov. 7, but whatever. There's also a drawing of a Burtonesque
ape which might be a production drawing.

And for good measure, John Goodwin reviews John Landis' "Schlock",
featuring an early ape by Rick Baker and a one - time only cameo by John
      Chambers.

Alas! Movieheadlines.com says that Chuck Heston will NOT be cameoing in
"Apes' because he sees it as a gimmick that would compromise the film.

      Hi Gang,

So nice to be back on a decent computer!!!

I really did like the TV series!  I felt it was somewhere between the last movie and the first movie..and I loved the way they played the downtrodden theme.  It was as if the humans *could* do something about their situation, but it was just too easy and safer to let the apes have their way.  I mean, all those years of seeing family and friends blown away just because they maybe looked at an ape in the wrong way, or didn't do something that an ape had ordered them to do, or didn't do it the way that the ape wanted it to be done..I think that the gorillas are very unpredictable, and that is what makes them dangerous.  The orangs are very detail-oriented and it makes them stuffy. The chimps are easy-going, but are hedged in by the other two to toe the line.  And the humans don't have a leg to stand on in the society, so they try to keep themselves out of the way, and in doing that, they lose that part of themselves that keeps them free.

I know, long winded again!  Just thoughts on the trip back down here in Florida...it's what kept that damned truck on the road!!!  Arrgh!!

                                                       *Lynne*

      So! Heston bails!
I wonder if it was because he felt he would just be a gimmick that would
detract from the film, or if he just saw another remake, like so many, that
was changed so much until it became unrecognizable, like Godzilla. I mean he
didn't seem to mind being a gimmick in On Any Given Sunday, where not only
was he on the television as Ben Hur on a scene, he also played the Football
      commissioner.

I always thought that was the funniest part of the entire movie,
especially the tear streaming down Wayne's face after Heston made his
little speech. A few of us in the theatre were laughing out loud, but a
lot of the "kids" (for lack of a better term) had no idea who Heston was.

numbers are from your location in Chatsworth to Brisbane or Sydney
exclusive of customs clearance and delivery charges.

The way the Aussie dollar is travelling at the moment, I'd have to sell off my first born to cover the shipping.
With regard to the promotional costumes in the auction, as far as I know the ones from Australia ( Zira, Cornelius and one AMC Gorilla )  had been returned to our L.A office. If there's more than one Gorilla, they could have come from Europe.
      Best,

Thanx Ken.  The reason I brought that up was that some of the AMC/FOX ape costumes that went on tour in '98, wound up at an unclaimed freight auction outside Los Angeles last summer.  I believe the guy who scooped them up (for a song) is planning on selling them soon.  I just wanted fans to be fore-warned if they turn up on eBay or somewhere that they are replicas, not originals.  AND we definately DID NOT  do the gorilla outfits for that tour!  Yikes!

Yes, Heston is willing to have fun with his persona, though it can also be lucrative. I taped a radio ad for "The Chimp Channel", a defunct TBS TV show that satirizes stuff using talking chimps (a la "Babe"). In the ad, Heston reads the copy, then says, " ATV station run by chimpanzees? This is preposterous!" and storms off, leaving the announcer to finish the ad.

Yes, Jeff.  That's them!  The "Mardi-gra" gorillas, as they've come to be known!  Talk about preposterous!!!  Big plastic road-kill gorilla heads with X-Ray specs lenses for eyes?!!!  What were they thinking?  To quote the AMC reps when APEMANIA arrived at the scene, "Thank God you all are here!  Our guys SUCK!!!"
AMC's New York office is to blame for those monstrosities.  They awarded the contract for those gorillas to a company in Florida without checking with their LA offices first (who were dealing with us at the same time).  Because New York had already cut a check to the Florida costumers, they felt they were stuck with using them.  Result:  Big Goofy Mardi-gra Gorillas with X-ray eyes!  YIKES!!!

Oh well, "now they know better".

The last I've heard is that Heston IS'NT doing "Apes"; he feels it would just be a gimmick. I talked to someone who had asked Rick Baker if he could be an ape and Baker replied they needed people with small noses. But people like Tim Roth and the "Green Mile" dude don't have small noses, so I guess there are exceptions.

.html Interesting info on new movie

Saw this on the Coming Attractions website (http://www.corona.bc.ca/films/details/apes.html").  Very interesting about the spaceship rumor:

"Greetings from the high desert of southern California! I don't know if this would qualify as a 'scoop', but I just spent most of Sunday afternoon wandering around the set of the Planet of the Apes (well, one of the sets). It is quite impressive. They have built (it's not quite complete) a giant crashed spaceship out of some kind of painted styrofoam. It looks incredible. Very Burtonesque. It has been built to appear partially buried into the earth (as if it had crashed nose-first at high speed). The rumor I heard from several people was that this was supposed to be the remains of the first ship that carried Taylor and crew. They have made the remains appear corroded so this might be more than a rumor. This area has been used for quite a few films (one of the Star Treks, for instance). It is in a fairly remote area of the Mojave Desert that is a National park. It's known for its eerie rock formations.

"I was told by a guard that they would not be shooting at this location until January. They have another site marked off about 1000 yards from the ship where they will be doing even more large-scale construction. I am from the area, and an open call went out about two weeks ago for extras. The only stipulation was 'no tatoos.'"

so far to contain the extra footage.

      have been kept >in? cheers!

It's been discussed here before, but it's worth repeating: those extra 10
minutes make BATTLE a much better movie. And not only the bomb footage.
Several other scenes are much more fleshed out as well. My third
      favorite, after BENEATH and PLANET.

I agree wholeheartedly! This was one case, IMHO, that the additional footage
was not unnecessary in the least, like a lot of the padding I've seen in
other films which added NADA to the storyline. Say, that sounds like most
"new" movies I have seen (very few of) recently. :) Here's to APES 2001!
Cheers and Happy Holidays to everyone. God Bless!

I agree the full version of Battle is far better but I believe the
censorship was directly related to the rating the film got (ie PG instead of
M). They did not want to lose the appeal of Apes to the kids.

Anyone else have an opinion on the reason?

Really thought the first glimpse of the new ape makeup would have
      generated more of a response.

Anyway, here's what E online says about the premise - don't read if you
      don't wanna know.

Apes begins in the near future when a gorilla genetically altered for
long-distance space travel is sent into the cosmos, where he falls into
a time portal that transports him 2,000 years into the past. Mark
Wahlberg plays an astronaut who somehow follows this craft into the same
      black hole.

Wahlberg crash-lands on a familiar-looking planet and discovers that the
area where the simian touched down has been branded a holy land--the
Forbidden Zone--and that this ape could be the missing link. His
descendants revere him, which leads to the big question: Did humans
evolve from apes or vice versa?

The gorillas in the film also promise to be less like humans in face
masks and more beastly. They live in caves, walk with a Neanderthal
hunch and give off a more savage vibe.

Yes, Charlton Heston will appear in a role that remains undefined. And
yes, Wahlberg will have a hint of a relationship with Helena Bonham
Carter's ape princess. But--sorry, Mark fans--Wahlberg will not do his
work in a loincloth. He'll be decked out in a space suit for most of the
      film.

      Hi All,
A while back I posted a note on how I'd seen a brief 4 minute "sizzle tape" to
promote the upcoming film to exhibitors and potential promotional partners.
More recently I have seen an extended version of this piece which includes a
number of make up shots including Duncan being prepared for his body cast and
then in full costume and make-up. It looked pretty impressive. Also included
where a few test shots of Carter in her chimp make-up which looked rather
similar to Zira yet with more human features. Another segment showed Giamatti
at "ape school" learning to walk and run like an ape.
Unfortunately I don't have a copy of this tape in my possession but I'm sure it
won't be long before it shows up on Ebay.
      Best to all.
      KEN

I'm glad you got it and enjoyed it Brian.
There is quite a few clips I need to place on the site which is one of many things I still have to do. Also Terry's fanzine as well as John's Simian Scrolls fanzine.

I just finished the music videos section along with a POTA Behind the Scenes music video that came out pretty cool. John Chambers can be found in that one.

The behind the scenes music video is at:

It's about 12 megs in size and about 4 minutes long.

I'm also keeping 300 megs open on the site just for the remake coverage.
So so far things are going well.
      Thanks for your support Brian.

And all who have helped out.

Well I wasn't here but I too am surprised at the low feedback towards the poster.
I personaly think it totaly rocks!
I like the way Baker made it so realistic, totaly blew me away!
But on the other hand we're dealing with a multi academy award winner here. There will be no mistake that this will be the closest we will come to an ape/human type likeness. (makeup at it's best)
My hat off to 20th Century Fox, they chose the right man.

I just wanted to say that the pic of the ape makeup left me breathless. I
was at the library, now I'm at Kinko's to finish up my email. Yes, they
kicked me out again...I take the 'puter until closing time, and get them all
ticked 'cause they want to leave..SORRY!!! The pic has made me more anxious

I see there is someone selling a VHS version of it on e-bay.
It's a copy version but at least it's better than nothing, for those interested.

I didn't get the poster, I got the 'stolen pic', the side view of a gorilla.
I'll go back to the ebay poster link now that I'm not in the
library...sometimes they block some of my email!

        Sorry about that Lynne.
It was the teaser Gorilla poster I was talking about. As for the "stolen pic" all POTA poster copyrights belong to 20th Century Fox and not to e-bay. And I do run a fan site supporting 20th Century Fox, so I don't see how it can be stolen?

These are banners that will be sent out to movie theatres in July of 2001, and there has been a cople of them offered on e-bay already.

They are in the files section at http://www.egroups.com/files/pota/

          - it's the remake poster and the couple of pictures of the tents.

Anyone interested in the TEASER posters can find them littered all over EBAY
right now.  Most of the images in circulation right now have been lifted from
          the eBay auctions.

I just got mine from an e-bay auction myself, I should be getting it in a couple of days. I don't even want to say how much I payed for it. (clearly ripped off) but hey, I had to have it! These are offical movie theatre posters, not the ones we'll  be getting at Walmart later on.

"Lifted", now that sounds a lot better than "stolen".
          Well put Brian.

Sorry Lynne, but that did sound pretty low.

          Hey Gang,
Just got back from Disney World, I was at a local movie theatre at Downtown Disney and spoted the Gorilla Teaser Poster in the lobby of the theater, send chills up my spine! I have to admit I wanted to take it home with me, frame and all.
          hehehe!!

I was hoping they had the other two but no chance, heck even the movie magazines aren't showing anything. Thery're really keeping this thing under wraps!

Merry Christmas and a happy 2001!

Sweet.  I also spotted a huge banner for the movie here in Washington, same gorilla teaser pic.  It's about 8 ft by 6ft.  Already getting in good with the theatre manager...

          Cool,
I just got one on e-bay for $80.00, this one is 4ft. by 8ft.
Just make sure the theatre manager doesn't hear about e-bay.
Keep him away from the internet!

          hehehe!!!
