Hey folks. . .
The new issue of "Wizard" magazine
says that Dark Horse has the rights to do "Planet of the Apes" comics, the first
in about a decade. They've found success with alot of Fox franchises: "Star
Wars", "Aliens", "Buffy", etc.
The same issue says Fox did a
presentation for the film in house on Oct. 24 at the Beverly Wilshire hotel,
complete with 10 apes running around (was that YOU,
Brian?).

Cool,
I just got one on e-bay for $80.00, this one is
4ft. by 8ft.
Just make sure the theatre manager doesn't hear
about e-bay.
Keep him away from the
internet!
hehehe!!!

Sweet. I also spotted a huge
banner for the movie here in Washington, same gorilla teaser pic. It's
about 8 ft by 6ft. Already getting in good with the theatre
manager...

Hey Gang,
Just got back from Disney World, I was at a
local movie theatre at Downtown Disney and spoted the Gorilla Teaser
Poster in the lobby of the theater, send chills up my spine! I have to
admit I wanted to take it home with me, frame and all.
hehehe!!
I was hoping they had the other two but no
chance, heck even the movie magazines aren't showing anything. Thery're
really keeping this thing under wraps!
Merry Christmas and a happy
2001!

Does anyone know if the preview is being shown at the theaters? I spent this weekend seeing 'What Women Want' and 'Dracula 2000', breathlessly awaiting something, anything....nothing! I thought sure they'd put it up for Christmas!
Merry Christmas, Everyone!!

Well, I myself was hopeing to see it, I went to see Cast Away (very good by
the way) and the teaser gorilla poster was right at the enterance of it
for all to see. If and when it does come out, I'm sure darkhorizons.com will
have it on the site. This guy is on top of every film coming out, and for sure
he'll have the teaser trailer posted on the site.
That on top of the fact that Access Hollywood and Entertainment Tonight
will preview it on their shows once released. So there are a few events to
look out for before we know for sure.
The Super Bowl Commercial is most likely as FOX released TITAN A.E. last
year during the event. I just hope it's soon, the suspence is diving me
crazy! :o)

.html I was getting ready to hop on the internet, when I pulled a cassette to
throw in the player...
A few years back, I had picked up, in a record store's "dollar bin," an
old tape, by a band called "T'Pau." I had some change burning a hole in
my pocket, and I have to admit--with what I hoped wasn't a sign of
encroaching, incipient fan-boyism!--that I was curious about a band
that shared its name with thre Vulcan matriarch, from the classic STAR
TREK episode "Amok Time" (when they first skedaddled over to Mr. Spock's
hoe-world)....
I don't know whatever happened to the female-fronted band--or if I
SHOULD have heard of them, long before--but TPAU (the title of the
album, as well), was released by Siren Records (Virgn), in '87....
I had never listened to the tape's second side, so, for whatever reason,
I tossed it, into the player, a few minutes ago, as while I went through
the morning's EMAIL...
As I was going through the Phil Nobile-fowarded makeup test
shots/article from the new movie, I suddenly realized, that the band
was singing about--
MONKEYS.
I checked the song list on the casette cover:
TPAU Side Two, Song Number Three:
"Monkey House"
A very strange cooincidence, indeed!

Reading some of the correspondence, there is a mention that these
photos are NOT from the new remake, but are from make-up tests a few years
ago that Burton did not like. Is that
right?

Well, I think it's more of a Hoax than anything
else, I find it hard to believe that Rick Baker had anything to do with that
makeup.
We're talking oscar winner here, not turkey of the
year award.
Aint it Cool News clearly has no love for POTA, I
remember when he was making fun of Walhberg when he saw that is first sceen
kiss was to be with an ape!
Well, the jokes on him, because anyone who knows
Rick Baker's work, clearly knows Aint it Cool News is full
it.

Well, a first test on the makeup yes,
but final result, I find that hard to believe. But of course I could be wrong.
I guess we'll find out with the first teaser trailer, and, I'm hopeing, Super
Bowl Commecial.
The first thing that came to my
mind when seeing these pics was that this will be the genetic ape that
travels to the past (pics of both young and old age) while the ones that
Wahlberg encounters when he arrives will be the more evolved (sharper) looking
apes.
As we see on the teaser
poster.
For it this is a final result, God I
hope I'm right.
The problem is that the more realalistic
you make the apes look, the more laughable it can be. The apes in the original
didn't look 100% real and therefore it looked more unique.
(awesome!)

Thanks Lynne,
I threw that teaser trailer together in a few
minutes, as soon as media coverage begins on both cable and regular
networks I'll then be able to make MP3 music files as I did with the
classic films along with better teaser trailers and music
videos.
We're talking mega fanzine here!
It's just a matter of time.

You'd be better off just recording the whole
Superbowl.
That way you know for sure you won't miss it. or
get that rainbow line coming down the screen if it's the first commercial during
a break.
I don't know for sure about this superbowl thing
but I have a funny feeling.
If the movie budget is high, a superbowl commercial
would be a wise investment.

around doin' that holiday thing and I haven't had a chance to do much
posting. And there's still relatives coming this week. Like Lloyd
Bridges said "Looks like I picked the wrong week to....(fill in the
blank). Anyhow, I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays. Love that
teaser poster. "Rule the Planet" indeed! The helmet reminded me of
the St. Louis Rams logo. "Now starting for the injured Kurt Warner is
Ursus! And he's driving the humans down the field!!!" I'm hoping
Super Bowl commercial too. Usually word leaks out beforehand, we'll
keep our eyes and ears open. The Forbidden Zone had a blurb about an
Estella Warren interview in Fashion magazine. Says she's taking
bareback riding & archery lessons for POTA. Also, she says that she
has a thin gauze costume. Very thin. I don't know, doesn't sound as
sexy as tree bark, but we'll see. A little something for all you Nova
fans out there (and you know who you are!) That's it for now, see you
all later, go Apes! John <.html

If you haven't been there yet, get
there NOW. There's 17 pics posted today which were taken secretly on
location, I think in Arizona, maybe California. Awesome location shots
many showing a spaceship protruding from the ground.

And your right, the makeup does

Thanks Alex,
It's certainly not a screen grab from the tape I've seen but the make
up does look kind of similar. In the sizzle tape, there's a very short
close up of Helena Bonnem Carter delivering some lines. It looked like
a screen test. The make up was very simplistic but effective ( like the
original). From memory, she didn't have as much facial hair as Zira.
So sorry, I can't be of assistance here. It could be legit...or maybe
not.
Either way, it's only a matter of time before more pics are leaked.

Well, Mike.
I
don't know the first thing about this script only rumors of what has been said
around the net. But if we're talking about a geneticly trasformed ape
traveling backward in time followed by Wahlberg traveling "2000 YEARS IN THE
PAST" and we see these Gorillas in Gladiator type costumes. We're talking
about "ROMAN TIMES". Perhaps a change in the past by this genetic
ape of the present leads to not only a change in the past but also in the
future. "OUR TIME". So we may be seeing past present and future this
apes film with it's sequals.
A

I like your optimism Alex. But I have the feeling We'll be saying, Wow that
was cool, but not what I expected, or hoped for. Don't get me wrong, I like
Tim Burton films. Though I don't have a single one in my vid collection.
And though I'm hoping for a Burton break through, I'll probably just get the
vid to complete the apes collection.
I did get the Scissorhands CD, but have only listened to it a couple of
times.
There are Tim Burton movies I've seen more than twice, thanks to cable, but
they don't have the playability to record or buy. I'd like to be as
optimistic as you, but when I heard about the monkeys, it seemed just another
strange world of Burton's imagination. A nice place to visit, but I don't
know how often I want to go back there. <.html

Michael
Well, if what I say is right, this film is going
to take us way beyond where the original took us. Instead of present and
future, we're talking past present and future!
And I bet you my bottom dollar that that ship
crased in the desert is the genetic ape's ship. Notice how it's "half
buried". That would mean that when Walhberg encouters it
"2000 years in the Past" it would have arrived centuries
before him!
What a mind blower!
But I have a strong feelin that that's only the
beginning of what is instore in this film!
As for Burton, no matter how anyone feels about
his films, just remember one little thing.
"EVERY DOG HAS HIS DAY".
And if what I say is right this is going
to be Tim Burton's day!
With one major kick ass film.
Talking humans or not, this is one great
script.
Or as Roddy McDawall would say, "A mind
Blower".

.html I am a long time apes fan who has the films on VHS letterboxed. I did have
the entire run of the Marvel Magazine, but it went by the wayside years past,
which is too bad. I'm greeting the rethinking of Apes with a cynical mind. I
recently saw shots of the crashed ship and have to say, any ship that crashed
like that - no one would be walking away from. Does anyone know if there are
any plans to reissue the original Planet of the Apes Card set? I had some

That's exactly my point, but I see it as more
of a half buried statue of liberty, then a doll in the cave. But because such
a concept has already been done before with the original. This half buried
space craft will only be the tip of the iceberg. Because if thier smart
enough to come up with this concept of time for the script, their smart enough
to come up with God knows what as a finaly.
But just think of the possible directions they can
go with this, hell they can even make prequals on earlier ape/human wars in
the stone age if that's how far this genetic ape traveled back. The stories
can be endless on this kind of concept!
But truth be told, I don't want to know anymore than
what I already feel it the storyline, nor will I post such a theory on my
site, for the last thing I ever want to do is spoil this film for myself nor
anyone else for that matter.
So word of advise, keep away from all spoilers on
the web if you don't want to know anymore.

of the apes makeup. Probably be another oscar for my main man, Rick
Baker.
I am not a number! I am a free man!
Well, as a free man you can do as you
wish.
Pictures, scenes, sound clips, interviews, trialers
and so on will be found on my site as time moves on. But script and story
details won't be.
So as you can see, I am a free man as
well.

Here's what I have to say
:
AICN: C'mon, Alex...don't be so hard on
good 'ol "Ain't It Cool News". From what I can tell they are a big "Apes"
booster. Founder Harry Knowles said the "Apes" DVD is "essential". They've
devoted some prime net real estate to the new makeups. In theie current 2001
preview, harry calls the new "Apes" "one of the most anticipated summer
films in my book". And as for their recent photos, Harry went on record to say
they are from the aborted Stan Winston attempts, not the current Rick Baker
ones. I don't know if it's true or not, but he appears to be setting the record
straight.
The pics: The 20 or so pictures on "Coming
Attractions" look cool. Not much to go on production-wise but GREAT landscapes!!
I'm just concerned that Burton doesn't think his scripts through and leaves lots
of plotholes. William Broyles' script was supposedly "great" , according to the
trades. So why is Burton bringing in the "Mighty Joe Young" hacks? I liked that
the original "Apes" seemed literate and believable, and used Einsteinian theory.
The main character of the new one is reportedly a "pilot", not an astronaut. How
is he going to find a time warp? Sounds like TV plotting to
me.
Super Bowl: Don't get your hopes up. I
remember last year Fox was supposed to show a spot for "X-Men" during the Super
Bowl but didn't, and "Apes" is coming out even later in the year (as is
"Jurassic Park 3" , which comes out July 18, about a week before "Apes" - - -
check out "Ain't It Cool News"' 2001 guide).
Ah, 2001...I'm very pleased "Apes" is
coming out that year. I've always kinda connected "Apes" with Kubrick's 1968
flick. They came out about a month apart, both dealt with Man's destiny, both
were groundbreakers in sci-fi. I wrote an article about the two in 1993. And now
Spielberg is doing "A.I." for next year, which was to have been Kubrick's return
to epic sci-fi for the first time since "2001", but for his death. Spielberg's
doing it as a tribute to him. Arthur Jacobs was a big "2001" fan, compared it to
the movie version of "Dune" he was working on, used "2001"'s FX expert Douglas
Trumbull for tests on another Jacobs project "Journey of the Oceanauts" . And,
according to Natalie Trundy, it was the film Jacobs watched the night he died. I
don't know about you but I'm going to watch it this week.
Happy 2001 everybody. - - - - - - - - Jeff Krueger

Nobody is showing 2001 in the UK. Not at all. I don't have it on video. I'm hoping one of my local arty cinemas will show it. It is at its best on the big screen. I've just finished reading the Odyssey Quartet, and would like to see the film again for comparison purposes.
Like POTA, it was a SF landmark.

Oh come on Jeff, an ape that has been geneticly
changed and traveling backward in time and changing the corse of human
history is more believeable than apes growing to human size and talking over
night.
Not to take away from the original concept (I
love the original concept) But I would be the first to admit that this new

What were Kubrick and his editor on, that made them say "Yeah ten more

Arthur C. Clarke didn't know what the ending meant, and he wrote it. Trying

Aw, c'mon Alex. . . at least the
human-size apes were the result of the production constraints of the time. They
had to take people and slap makeup on them. But a script has no borders. Today
they can create anything they can imagine. I'm not saying the originals were

I'm excited that the new one is about politics and war (new territory for

The Statue of Liberty scene will aways be an

Indeed!
But ask yourself one important

Where did James Cameron stand before
TITANIC?
Terminator, Aliens Abbys and so

But nowhere near TITANIC's billion mark, which

doing.
This movie will make enough to make
20th Century Fox very happy, and happy enough to make a sequal, Comic
Books, Toys, Cartoon Series, you name it.
20th Century Fox is not going to loss on
this deal, I promise you that.

Of course not, even if it sucks, there's always Cable/Free TV/DVD and VHS
rights to be sold. As well as a novelization which is probably being written
right now.

I just don't like or trust remakes. Calling it a 're-thinking' is just
putting on a new face. I did just re-read the original novel (got it in
hardback really cheap) and it was just as enthralling - if dull in some parts
- as I remembered. I had all the movie adaptations at one time. The worst one
was Battle, but that was because it was written from the original script and
had some ideas, like a radiated Ceasar, that were (wisely) dropped.
How many people out there are aware that the Apes films were the first ones
to be heavily merchandised? It's because of this that Films today get the
heavy marketing approach. Also the Apes model kits have been released!

Oh come on Jeff, an ape that has been genetically changed and traveling backward in time and changing the coarse of human history is more believable than apes growing to human size and talking over night.
Not to take away from the original concept (I love the original concept) But I would be the first to admit that this new concept is more believable with the exception of time travel.
Now come on! Here it is 2001 and we know genetic engineering is not only possible it is now a reality. It stands to reason that after the dog and cat plague when they decided to have apes as pets and slaves they would tweak the genes a bit. That would take only one generation. How else would they make apes more like human workers than splicing in a human gene or two.
It stands to reason that genetic manipulation was as far fetched in the 70's as time travel is today. Granted there are more problems with it i.e. Grandfather paradoxes, time space continuum disruptions etc.... But if you could ride the worm hole from a black hole to a white hole, who knows what you might find? You have to suspension of disbelief. It is after all science Fiction.<.html

At least Fox isn't in financial trouble and Zanuck isn't relying on Apes profits to bail out the studio this time. But that may not be enough to save this version. With chick magnets instead of top noch actors, and monkeys with the apes, I smell a Star Wars Ewok factor creeping in with them. If it turns out to be Hollywood crap, screw 'em! I'll make a proper remake independantly. I could do it with a couple of good actors and the fans working for scale!<.html <.html

Well, we can all debate
theories until we're all blue in the face.
And in the end we're only going
to believe our point of views, as there are those who see the cup half
empty and there are those who see the cup half full.
But when showtime comes, the
cup will not be half empty, nor will it be half full, the cup will be
overflowing!

Not really, it's so well known and has been reproduced in so many magazines
that just having it on the tape/DVD doesn't really harm anything. I've seen
Planet at least 500 times and that scene always gets me.

I'll go with this one since it's based on Planet. I think Brents ship's
chrono was broken and the when Zira saw Taylors, it was already counting
back. I wish Fox would have done a better job on the Apes DVD's, they should
have added the unused footage from the beginning of Escape (even as an extra)
that showed the apes in the spaceship as well as the uncut Battle.

Thanks for clearing that up Brian.
I was going to post the pics on my site with credit
given to Ain't it Cool News as I did to Coming Attractions but I'm still holding
out for Rick Baker's final makeup results.
Medicoms:
Great little figures, I saw the ones with Mutans

the 3 ape-o-nauts and a couple of conqest figures and of course The
Lawgiver.

A few weeks ago I would have asked you if you would
like to post it on the site but I'm just about mp3ed out and I'm now prepared
to remove a few of the ones I have on my site as well as a few music
videos. I'm now only going to remian with about 3 each.
The greatest demand right now is remake, and
so no more updates will be added to the original and all focus will now be
added to the remake section of the site. A few things have to
be finalised on the original section like the Escape, Conquest and Battle
films, but other than that the main focus will now be REMAKE. But I'm sure
there are many here who would be interested.
Best,
Alex

Ken do me a favor and resend me your mailing

shipped by priority mail.
Again I'm sorry for the delay but running a site is
not an easy thing to do as far as time is concerned. But no matter what, I
always keep my word.
