I think they look great and I bet they look even better in motion.

They look very much like apes - not plastic masks. And the teeth! Without
the long muzzle they can work with (extra bits on top of) their own teeth.
I hated seeing (mainly in the TV series) shots showing the actors teeth
hidden behind the "make-up" set of teeth. Now they won't look retarded when
they speak because their lips will be there!

I think "A Bad Guy" needs a bit more work, but the gorilla and the female
(is that Helena?) look fantastic.

Bring it on.

Michael

I'm thinking this way they look far too human like. Actually looks like they
went a step back to the test makeups they did prior to the original film. Plus,
the chimp looks more like some kind of Elric fantasy elf character, and the one
closeup gorilla looks like a cross between Tina Turner and Sasquatch.

I like the pointed heads on the gorillas however, but that was about it.

These pics have taken my optimism out of my sails. But then again, I'm still
trying to tell myself that The Phantom Menace wasn't really THAT bad. (Yeah
right!)

Well, my guess is that the "BAD GUY" and the "PRINCESS" are from the direct line of the genetic ape. This is why they look human/ape.
I mean after all SHE IS THE PRINCESS.

As for the Gorillas, Chimps and Orangs, they will look more Ape than Human, as  pictures of the Gorillas clearly shows.

As for the BAD GUY, this is why he's bad, he's just trying to protect that which his line of race has created. The line of the Genetic Ape.

Who says a picture doesn't say a thousand words!
And as for my last insight on the crashed ship and the ROMAN AGE, no doubt that was also correct. That's a sword he has in his hand and  not a gun.

Past, Present and Future!
Damn this movie is going to good!

Best,

Where did I compare a movie I haven't seen to the Phantom Menace?

I'm simply remembering the sinking feeling I got back when teaser pics and little bits of that story came out.   Sure enough, TMP was every bit as bad as I imagined it might be.

The most disappointing thing about these makeups, though, is that they came from Rick Baker.  I would have expected a little more from him.  These apes are pretty darn plain looking.

Brian-

Can you shed any light on who's who? Is that Helena Bonham Carter as
the female? MC Duncan as "Attar"? (By the way, I think the last pic
under "Warrior" is Attar without his costume.)

I want to like the remake. These pics did to me exactly what the
fellow below said - they've sort of taken the optimism out of my
sails. I'm adjusting to the makeups, but the gorilla uniforms aren't
getting me jazzed. 200 of those red guys charging across the desert
might look cool, who knows. These trading card looking pics aren't
the best way to see these things, I'm sure.

Still trying to like what I see-

I really want to believe that Alex.  I REALLY want to believe it!

I will say that Tim Burton is a very solid director and the fact that he's at the helm has always pulled me through my foreboding feelings.

I think Phil had a good point too about the way these pics are presented.  I'm sure these costumes and makeups are not being seen in their best light.  The quasi-humorous captions didn't help me one bit, that's for sure.

I don't see that as a good thing . . .

For collectors aout there, I've read that the line of figures for
this flick will be using RealScan technology - it's a process where
the characters are scanned using lasers, and a casting is created by
computer from the information collected during the scan. They
currently use it for things like wrestling figures, and the likeness
detail is remarkable.

Not as nice as teh Medicom figures, but you can't have everything.

Michael

I couldn't put it better myself.
At leat now when an ape speaks, we'll know who's speaking, and not guess by the voice of the actor.

Full motion of the mouth is a mojor PLUS!!
No matter what anyone says about these makeups, this is the 21 century, not the the 1960s.

Mike Ploog, one of my favourites. I too agree that the gorillas look like
the old 70s Marvel comics. I was trying to think of which films Ploog worked
on, and off the top of my head I think he did some rather gruesome work for
the remake of The Thing. But enough about that...

Of the pictures on the website...

I think Addar or whatever his name is looks pretty cool, and the ape
princess is groovy too - but the other two are, to be honest, just a bit
silly looking. I do like some aspects of the make-up in that they're a
little more "realistic" (seems funny to talk about realism, given the
subject we're discussing) while at the same time being quite faithful to the
original. But that red costume looks pretty ugly. I guess I'll need to wait
and see them in action, but overall I'm still pretty unsure about them.

It reminds me of Gary Oldman's "Son of the Dragon" armour in the
Francis Ford Coppola's "Dracula"

I think the Gorillas look great, they have Rick Baker stamped all
over them. The Female looks weird with a chin and the Bad guy looks
like one of the Cone-heads!

By the way Alan... The Kubrick sets were £38! each. Way to go, rip off Britain.

Phil--

I agree!

I was just sharing my first impression.

As a kid, I actually eagerly awaited the first Marve issue, even getting te local candy stand owner to figure out when the mag would be hitting the stands!

I even asked him what time of day magazines were usually deivered!

(Talk about eager...!)

Upon the given, warm, sunny day (summer?), my father, bless him, faithfully drove me over to Franklin Avenue, in Franklin Square, New York--

And there it was!

Sadly, that once-upon-a-time youngster, was disappointed...

And I never particularly cottoned to the Marvel APES line...

(Ask me some time, and I might tell you how, a few years later--when I was breaking into mags like STARLOG and FANTASTIC FILMS, I went up to Marvel, to pitch articles to the APES mag's editor...)

With the movie, I'm sort of expectig the worst--

But will be happy to be--

I've got to say I loved the old Marvel mags, especially the Moench & Ploog
storyline. They were a bit wacky and most definitely a product of their
time, but they remain pretty high on my list of favourite ape-related items.
I thought those gorillas were cool. I can't even chalk it up to nostalgia
either, since I wasn't even born when they first came out.

It's 1,954 and here's why: it's much easier to presume the chronometer in
Taylor's ship was damaged because he read it after the ship had crash
landed in a lake. Brent, on the other hand, "took an Earth time reading
BEFORE re-entry" and got 3955. That same date was confirmed by NASA
scientists in ESCAPE after subjecting the ship to "microscopic scrutiny".

You know, actually, it's abstract - it simply means "about 2000 years in the
future" and at the time no one really picked up specifics.

I can't understand why this is really a point for debate when the reality is
shoddy scripting and all you are really doing is damage control! I don't
mean any offence at all Chris so don't read this wrong OK? I just hope with
the new movie, it does not suk and if there are sequels, the subsequent
authora actually pay attention to previous movies!!!

Fox goes "Ape" with merchandising

By Dana Harris

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Twentieth Century Fox hopes its big summer
picture "Planet of the Apes" will generate a lot of monkey business
in the merchandising world.

Together with toy manufacturer Hasbro and specialty marketer Applause,
the studio has unveiled a major marketing push for the Tim Burton
epic.

The program, which will be launched at New York's Intl. Toy Fair (Feb.
11-15), is expected to generate revenues for the studio along the
lines of those for other Fox event titles such as "Independence Day"
or "X-Men."

Hasbro will unveil a line of action figures and collectible toys at
the Toy Fair, and will ship them to retailers just before the film's
July release.

Dark Horse Comics will publish "Planet" comic books and graphic
novels, while Buster Brown will produce footwear. In addition to
traditional products such as lunch boxes, posters, knit caps, trading
cards, T-shirts and backpacks, the "Planet" line will also include
dioramas, inflatable furniture, scooters and scooter heads, underwear,
clocks and shower caps.

The picture, which began shooting Nov. 6, is expected to wrap in
April. Mark Wahlberg, Helena Bonham Carter and Michael Clarke Duncan
star.

Sounds pretty cool John!
Wow, three ape stars so far, not bad.
And the best thing about it is that it's located near the Memphis Airport. I may be tempted to go, but I won't know for sure until July. I'm pretty sure there are plenty of Hotels in the area so I'm going to hold it off until that time. But it is TEMPTING!
How often do you get a chance to go a festival like this.

Do you know what days they will appear there?
Is it all 4 days, or a certain day? Because I know I can be there by Thursday to Sunday but the Festival begins on Wed.

I'm also tempted to go to New York and see the Toy Convention and see the new Ape toys, plus spend the weekend in New York, the only problem with this toy convention is that it starts on Sunday and ends on Friday. And I can't take a vacation from work until August. (bummer) So I can only be there no later than Monday Evening. (If there isn't a snow storm) and that's another problem, my flight home can be delayed.

Boy that sucks.

Let me know about the days the actors will appear in Memphis, the site doesn't say anything about that, hopefuly they will as the time draws near.

Best,

Alex

I missed something here. What means "about 2000 years"?

No offence taken Michael. One small point though: I don't know if it's so
much "shoddy" scripting as it is a lack of reliable resource material.
Remember that back in 1969, Paul Dehn couldn't just run down to his local
video store and rent a copy of POTA to check out all the details. He was
pretty consistent with his 3955 date. And before anyone bring it up,
Zira's "3950" comment in BATTLE was a post-production screw up.
McDowell's dialogue ("In the year 3950, Apes will destroy the Earth!")
was looped in to reflect the date Zira mentioned on the recording they
were watching.

Yeah, the whole date issue on on POTA is pretty screwed up.
But on the other hand a sequal was never planed.
Not only was Brent's ship quoted wrong in BENEATH as 3955 A.D., but in ESCAPE the President of the United States quoted Taylor's ship as 3955 A.D.

And I don't even waht to get into the cartoon series: 3979 A.D. (from the original PLANET OF THE APES 3978 A.D. point of view) one yesr after the earth was detroyed?

I guess they wanted the lower lip articulated, but the upper muzzle is a

Well, latest word out from Coming Attractions:
The photos of the female is indeed the princess as I suspected. From the genetic ape line which makes her princess. And no doubt the bad guy is related as not only he looks the same as her. But his "Chest Plate" is no doubt that of ROYALTY!

Now you know why those two look kind of funny looking.
Half Ape/Half Human! The line of the Genetic Ape!

        Cool page Terry.
Once I get started on my links page on the remake site I'll post a link to your new page. In the meantime I've placed a new link to your site promoting your POTA fanzine as well as John's under fan art work.

Jacobs watched "2001" the night he died. "Journey of the Oceanauts" was a
movie he was going to make but died before he could. They did film a test to
see if they could create an underwater film without water. J. Lee Thompson
directed, Douglas Trumbull did the effevcts, and Eric ("Escape") Braeden and
Bruce ("Willard", "X-Men") Davidson were the actors. - - - - Jeff Krueger

Oh come on Jeff, an ape that has been genetically changed and traveling
backward in time and changing the coarse of human history is more
believable than apes growing to human size and talking over night.

Not to take away from the original concept (I love the original concept)
But I would be the first to admit that this new concept is more believable
with the exception of time travel.

Now come on!  Here it is 2001 and we know genetic engineering is not
only possible it is now a reality.  It stands to reason that after the dog
and cat plague when they decided to have apes as pets and slaves they would
tweak the genes a bit.  That would take only one generation.  How else would
they make apes more like human workers than splicing in a human gene or two.
It stands to reason that genetic manipulation was as far fetched in
the 70's as time travel is today.  Granted there are more problems with it
i.e. Grandfather paradoxes, time space continuum disruptions etc.... But if
you could ride the worm hole from a black hole to a white hole, who knows
what you might find?  You have to suspension of disbelief.  It is after all
        science Fiction.

        Hi everyone!

I'm new to this group and I just wanted to introduce myself. Does anyone
know where I can find ape collectibles?

Anyway, about those ape pictures. Looks promising, especially when one
considers they are only tests. At first I thought they were more jokes at
fans' expense but closer examination proved these had to be Tim Burton
designs. Obviously "Attar" is the gorilla Fox used on the poster (perhaps
        they are planning to use others in this batch for the next teaser posters;
perhaps that's how those scalliwags got the photos in the first place, from
Fox publicity). Who's going to play "Attar", Jimmy Durante? That snoz has to
go! I like the princess, again except for the nose (and hopefully they just
didn't bother to put chins on them). The "bad guy" is my favorite, except
that he reminds me of the "Wizard of Oz" (and Baker said the GRINCH was his
"Wizard of Oz"). The gorilla warrior (in red) c0ould be a lighting
nightmare. Obviously those were the costumes the extras were wearing in
those OTHER well-traveled pics. A good start but hopefully they were
        improved upon.

Natalie Trundy is being interviewed by "Starlog" on Sunday. She asked me
        to be there.

Some interesting Zanuck quotes in today's Marilyn Beck column. They're
wrapping the 10th week of shooting "right on schedule and on budget" (well,
what do you expect a producer to say?) . Producti0on will probably wrap in
early March. Zanuck is also filming "Journey to the Center of the Earth" for
Fox this year and says the only thing it will have in common with the
original is the title: "It's a whole new concept, almost alien-like and very
scary". He's also doing "Road to Perdition" (starring Tom Hanks, the second
film from director Sam Mendes, the first was "American Beauty", last year's
"Best Picture") and "Reign of Fire". That's quite a slate. I bet some of you
aren't even producing ONE movie this year. Get on the ball!

the hardest part. Glad to hear about Journey to the Center of the Earth.
Another of my faves. Hope they don't mess it up. Yeah those noses are very

Teasers are made months before a film is finally finished, just about every movie in history has proven that.

perhaps they will fix the chinless ape in the mix so to speak.

Well no doubt what we're seeing here is an original concept with a whole new original story. So if no one ends up liking this new remake it will sure be hard to link this film to the originals.
I think the real nightmare would be that if the new storyline could somehow be linked to the original and the film totaly sucked, then it would in a way damage the original.

So with a whole new concept, the original series of films will remain intact throught motion picture history. I'm I being too dramatic? :o)
But the never the less I look foward to seeing the new Gilligan's Island Remake, I mean POTA remake!

.html Whom do you mean by "Linda"?

The only "Linda" I can think of connected with PotA is Linda Harrison,
and IMHO, this design actually looks _less_ revealing than what Linda
*did* wear in the original film.

However, I certainly won't complain if Estella ends up wearing this.  :-)

For anyone not too happy about the new chimp size, well again it's a new concept. But I don't think the the chimp in this film will be as highlighted in this remake as it was in the original. If you would notice by the new pitures, these chimps are militant. (army pons at chess if you will) I personly believe that the genetic ape will replace the chimp in this remake. For so far the only apes I see with human size is the Gorrila, Orang and "Genetic Ape". (Chimp Replacement)

And allthough I see nothing wrong with their size, I don't believe that militant chimps will replace militant Gorillas as a focal point in the film. Chimps will no doubt be a more backdrop as most different apes and monkeys in this film will be.

            Just a guess.

            Best,

Well I fully agree with you, Linda did show more, but sometimes leaving something for the imagination can be just as hot as well. I mean come on, haven't you ever seen a women look hot in a dress? And in some cases some women look hotter dressed than undressed!
            hehehe!!!

Although Linda and Estella will never have that problem.

            Subject: MORE APE PICTURES
            .html
I'm just glad they didn't make the first Planet of the Apes movies in 1933
like the first King Kong - the technology was good for the time but look at
the difference in believability between it and the 1977 remake. Kong
actually looks like an ape and does not go from being taller than the Empire
State building to taking 5 minutes to climb the same building!

If you think the original make up was so great then watch the original
movies. It is inevitable that things are different in the 2001 version and
I must say I believe that it is just Baker making the most of the best in
make up technology. I think if Chambers was still active today and was
coming up with original concepts for a new ape movie he would come up with
something completely different and something more realistic as we are seeing
            now.

I think the introduction of genetic engineering far better explains how
primitive apes became upright and acquired the power of speech in about 30
            years.

I think some of us are being a bit harsh and unrealistic. Stop living in
the past and try the current millennium!
