I hear what you're saying, but you can't defend the 1977 Kong other than the
costume. Yuck to the rest.

I'm very interested in the new Apes flick, and like a lot of what I'm
seeing.I like the apelike noses and the differant colored hairs and all. I
think the half-apes will work better in context of the movie. I'm not nuts
about the costuming so far, but again, I have to see the movie.

If I was making a new apes film I'd add a lot of new things to the original
world. Maybe big mutated animals or something. I have to admit that I do
REALLY like the look of John Chamber's apes regardless of the new stuff from
Baker. They're just differant I quess. I'm hoping I like this one a whole
bunch too. - Jeff

I'm with you Alan. At least Ari has a chin now...but only orangs should have
eyebrows...hybrid or no. And she should lose the long hair and braids.

This second batch of pics looks much better than teh first.

The chimps seem to be looking about right (except the girl, who looks
that way because of some sort of plot point, gotcha).

Costumes still look a little too Sid and Marty Kroft.

remake it will sure be hard to link this film to the originals.

Gus Van Sant's Psycho didn't tarnish Hitchcock's, but younger
audience members didn't even know it was a remake.

Another example:

Two years ago one of the producers of Night of the Living Dead,
fueled by the success of Star Wars' Special Edition rerelease, went
out and shot new scenes, and replaced 15 minutes from the original
film with this new footage. Teh result was an Ed Wood-like
embarrassment that did not even involve the films' original director,
George Romero. Everyone said "well, if it sucks, we'll always have
the original." Today, if you walk into a retail video store,
the "special edition" with new scenes cut into it is the ONLY version
most stores carry. Anyone who walks into that store and wants to see
the classic horror film they've heard about will end up with THAT
version.

Something to ponder.

Oh, and I don't think the makeups can ever look "too much like real
apes". That was the point, I thought.

Seen the remake lately . . .?

Also, Jack Pierce did an INCREDIBLE chimp makeup for the 1927
film "The Monkey Talks". It looked more like a real ape than
Chambers' makeups, but the end goal was different.

Unless a smart ape breeds with a human, and then breeds with a dumb ape, and

Subject: Heston confirmed
.html
Is Heston going to be in the Planet of the Apes remake? Yes, he is...and
contrary to his own comments in the past, he's wearing ape make-up.

While talking to Variety columnist Army Archerd, producer Richard Zanuck
revealed how he got Heston on board the project. During a meeting for
breakfast at the Beverly Hills Hotel, Zanuck managed to get Heston to
come in to do a four-hour make-up test. Eventually, the actor agreed to
come on board the Tim Burton directed project, but for only one day of
shooting.

Beyond Heston's involvement, Archerd goes on to describe the
production's set on Stage 30 at Sony Studios. The columnist gives his
assessment of the apes' culture, writing, "The stage is transformed by
Rick Heinrichs into the apes' city of Derkein; it is multi-terraced,
with ape homes carved into the sides of a mountain whose many caverns
provide the humans with temporary escape from their ape captors."

Though the film will be short on digital effects, there will still be
some. Archerd notes that there is a "large blue screen at one end of the
massive set, giving the opportunity to expand the 'city' to even greater
depths."

In addition, when production moves to the desert next week, 300 apes
will be on hand. That group will also provide the digital basis for many
more in the film's crowd scenes.

Archerd also talks of Rick Baker's new Apes make-up, which he declares
feels like real flesh upon touching Helena Bonham Carter. He also
reports that the actress really loves playing the role of the chimp
named Ari, even though she has to be at the studio at 1 a.m. to start
putting on her make-up.

Regarding set security, Archerd reports, "Stage 30 is separated from the
rest of the studio by large black curtains drawn across the surrounding
streets to prevent prying eyes of mere human actors working on other
stages. Trams with blackened windows circle back and forth to the stage
from a staging area on Washington Blvd. for makeup, hair, costumes and
food. But there is a crafts services table outside the stage and it was
funny watching the 'apes' munching on (real) bananas."

Subject: THE STORYLINE
.html
.html
For those who a bit confused about the storyline here is what I think this story may endup being.

A geneticly engineered ape is send back 4000 years in the past. Once there he mates with every female on the block. Now out of all of these offsprings, there will be a few that will appear like him. Half Ape/Half Human.

While the rest will appear as their mommies, Orangs, Gorillas, Chimps and so on. Now you do this generation after generation and by the time Wahlberg appears on earth 2000 years in the past (2000 years after him) he will endup in a world were you will have smart Gorillas, smart Chimps, smart Orangs and smart Genetic Apes.

There is only one genetic ape, the one who started it all, the ones you see like the princess and her possible (bad guy) brother in the pictures are not genticly changed, but are simple offsprings of the one and only genetic ape. "THE ROYAL LINE".

Just trying to make the record clear as to what I'm trying to say here guys.

And thus at Walhberg's "VISIT" you have PLANET OF THE APES!
The visitor can be Wahlberg or the genetic ape from Wahlberg's time, never the less it's not that important.

What is important is that the is one KICK ASS SCRIPT if I'm right.
And more than one possible kick ass sequal dealing with past present and future.

Best,

Alex

It amazes me that we haven't see a script for this one yet. Every other
film script has turned up on the shelves of film stores or at least on eBay.
Now with this version...nothing. Security must be very tight (read extreme)
on the set. I would think that someone would lose a copy of it, accidentally
on purpose. Maybe after shooting is wrapped up a copy or two will turn up
some where, or we'll hear a leak and we can have a better idea of the
storyline. Then again hearing the story and seeing it are two different
animals.

Expect nothing...you'll never be disappointed!

I would have to agree, as the storyline I put together from rumors on the web.
But this storyline does seem to be moving in this direction as the costumes do show a PLANET OF THE APES of the past. ROMAN EPIC type. With no guns, all swords. And if it is a POTA of the past, a genetic ape from the present can be the only thing to strat this domino effect. Also confirming these rumors.

Zanuck Back With 'Apes'

Richard Zanuck is returning as producer of the remake of one of the films
he pushed through while president of Fox in the '60s: Planet of the Apes.
Zanuck's signing for the important producing position serves to show how
serious Fox is about getting the Apes production up and moving quickly. In
addition, Zanuck's participation might calm any doubts fans of the old series
have about a contemporary take on the classic film series.

While talking to Variety, current 20th Century Fox Film Group prez, Tom Rothman,

says, "This is a big film with a very very significant director. (Zanuck) is a
pro's pro
and there's the karmic unity of the fact he was here when the series started.
There's
a certain poetry to that."

Zanuck tells the Hollywood Reporter, "For me to come back into this, I feel like
 I'm
in a time warp. I initially put this into production when I was at Fox 30-some
years
ago. The idea was so intriguing to me then, and I think we can do better now
because
technology will allow us to improve the look and articulation of the apes."

Regarding working with Tim Burton, the producer adds, "Tim Burton is somebody
who
I admire and have tried to get for a lot of my previous projects, but was never
was able
to do it." Zanuck is said to have already met twice with Burton and the project
and will
do so again after the Academy Awards broadcast, something else he produces.

Now that the project has both a producer and a director, the previously
announced Tim
Burton, pre-production on the project should start very quickly as well as any
necessary
re-writes of Bill Broyles script.

Apes Saga Coming to DVD!

Here's a little tidbit from dvdfile.com (thanks to our tipster for
letting us know):

Now, on to the goodies. First is probably the biggest Fox request as of
late, the PLANET OF THE APES box set. Indeed, this six-disc set
is THX-certified and all-anamorphic (yeah, baby), will arrive around 4Q
2000 and features all the films plus an extra "sixth disc" containing
the terrific making-of documentary seen on the Fox Channel, amongst
other places. However, never fear, the sixth disc will be included in
the
box set and you won't have to mail away for it! There may be some other
goodies on the discs, but in any event it looks pretty dang cool. No
price is yet available.

Hu said I get to the end of Ape-ril; if I don't deliver (I will!) do what you may. I was in my local Tower video/book store and right before my eyes was Issue #2 of "Apesfan"! The one with the Roddy tribute. They told me they were working on a deal with Tower and I guess it went through. Yet another triumph for "Apes". Toodle-ooo!- - - - Jeff

very cool news !!!!!!!!!!!
You're one lucky guy!!!

PS I hope you have sent me something!!

Hi Terry. . . .  Don't put this on the web, this is just between us. This weekend Natalie and I went to a convention to see Charlton Heston and Linda Harrison. Both were at a "Planet of the Apes" table and since Natalie knows them we all hung out together. The line of autograph seekers was long for Chuck (he was donating the money to charity) so he didn't have alot of time to chat. He stayed ninety minutes longer than scheduled to get as many people as possible. He gave Natalie  a copy of his $35 book "Charlton Heston's Hollywood" and did some autographs for me. Nice guy, though it's obvious he's weak from his recent health problems.

But the more interesting stuff concerns Linda, who lives in Maryland but flew out for the convention on her own dime. As you know, her ex-husband Richard Zanuck is producer of the new "Apes" movie . But her sons Harrison and Dean are helping their dad and she stayed with Harrison during her visit. Harrison was at the convention, checking out "Apes"' popularity. I met him, he played Goldie Hawn's baby in Spielberg's first movie "Sugarland Express". Afterwards, he took his dad to the airport and got to tell him about all the fans (Linda related to me later).  Anyway, I had lunch with Linda and she brought up maybe I should keep tabs on the production for the fan club through her sons and gave me their phone number (I told her there are official updates on movies like "Star Wars" and "Pearl Harbor" to cut down on the rumors). So I now have a nice contact to the movie for us. Linda also gave me her personal e-mail address. Nifty, huh?

She also told me some stuff she learned while staying with her son. The script is a big secret and they wouldn't even tell her about it (Harrison has read the script 6 times), but mentioned it begins and ends with a narrator character. They want to cast Heston as this character. Wouldn't it be neat if this is the main character as an old man? That would be a way for Heston to still play the main character (it's also genius for the first voice the audience hears to be Heston's). Another shocker she told me isthey are considering going with Rick Baker instead of Stan Winston for FX (my friend Scott Essman knows Baker, however, and says he has closed his company for awhile; I dunno). Fox is apparently not happy with Winston's ego. Actually, Fox is keeping a tight reign. Linda told me Zanuck got a terrible deal despite being the producer of hits like "Jaws", "Cocoon" and "Deep Impact". Obviously Zanuck 's involvement is about more than money.

Linda also told me something I'll put in "Chronicles": she was eating in the Fox commissary in the days before the news broke about Burton, and Fox president Bill Mechanic was there with Burton. Mechanic went over to her, shook her hand and said they are finally going to make POTA and Burton's going to direct. She said his face was really animated and from the way he talked she believes he's a big "Apes" fan- - - this is the head of Fox! Linda also believes her being there is what gave them the idea of hiring Zanuck and she believes it was Burton's idea (another fan?) Linda says Burton was hired because Fox's research showed he was the director most compatible with "Ape" fans' likes and dislikes. We shall see.

In any case, I guess I have my foot in the door. I met Linda before but I got to know her a lot better now thanks to her friendship with Natalie. Well, that's my adventure this weekend. Like I said, don't put this on the web, I don't want Linda to get in trouble for blabbing. We have to take this slowly. - - - Jeff

With the same name.

The (admittedly muddy) point was that if this movie SUCKS, an entire
generation will think "movie that Sucked" when they think Planet of
the Apes.

I know the remake sucking is a scientific impossibility to you, but
it exists nonetheless.

Actually, there have been four or five Apes references in the first season
of "Futurama." The first episode had them going underground into a
"Beneath" like world, at least for a moment . . . Personally, I think it's
one of the best shows on TV. Too bad that Fox has it on at 7pm here in

In case everyone hasn't heard the latest, Tim Burton has brought the
Academy Award winning costume design team and production designers from
Sleepy Hollow to head up their respected departments on the new Planet of
the Apes film.

For the longest time though, the really big question has been who would be
responsible for picking up the make-up design where John Chambers left off;
Stan Winston or Rick Baker.  Hold onto your hats folks, cuz Rick (King Kong
'76, Greystoke, Incredible Shrinking Woman, Gorillas in the Mist, Mighty
Joe Young) Baker and his team have got the gig!!!  And we all know how
convincing Mr. Baker's apes have been throughout the years.

Good luck to everyone involved on the remake project!  We anxiously await!

I have just read on a newsgroup (haven't managed to confirm it yet) that
comic artist Alfredo Alcala passed away on the 8th April, aged 74, of
cancer. He was one of the many Filipino artists who made such a great impact
on the American comics of the 70s (along with Nestor Redondo, Alex Nino,
Ernie Chan, Tony DeZuniga, Rudy Nebres and many more). Although he worked on
such well known characters as Conan the Barbarian and Batman, he is known to
apefans as the artist responsible for Marvel's adaptations of "Beneath" and
"Conquest" as well as a couple of other miscellaneous chapters for the 70s
PotA mag. An excellent artist whether working on his own or inking others,
and verstile too (he was equally adept at a humourous style, used in such
publications as DC's "Plop!").

Dear Planet of the Apes Fans:

My name is Lukas Kendall and my company, FILM SCORE MONTHLY, has
just released on CD for the first time the ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK
RECORDING of BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES, music by Oscar-winning
composer LEONARD ROSENMAN.

FSM is a magazine about movie soundtracks and we also produce
limited edition CDs which we license from the film companies and
sell exclusively through the magazine.

Our BENEATH CD is fully licensed by 20th Century Fox and is available
by MAIL ORDER only from our website: www.filmscoremonthly.com.
It will NOT be in any record stores; it is a limited edition of
3,000 units.

As a special bonus, our CD features the original film score
(which has never been available in ANY form) which we have meticulously
remixed and remastered from the Fox vaults as well as the music-and-
dialogue LP tracks released on Amos Records in 1970.

For fans of Charlton Heston's films, among our other CD soundtrack
releases are The Omega Man; and for fans of composer Leonard
Rosenman, we also released his score to Fantastic Voyage.
See http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/cds for our complete catalog.

We just got our APES CD back from the plant today and I'm
trying to spread the word as much as possible! So I'm writing
as many Apes webmasters as I can -- I hope you're interested in
the disc and in spreading the word about it. Please contact me
if you have any questions; a cover scan is attached.

Following is the press release we're sending out with more info.
Thanks for reading and I hope you are interested in our CD.

FILM SCORE MONTHLY releases Beneath The Planet Of The Apes

Restored 1970 Sci-Fi Original Soundtrack by Leonard Rosenman

Film Score Monthly rescues from oblivion the second film score from the
legendary Planet of the Apes series.

The Film Score Monthly Silver Age Classics series presents another
long-lost science fiction score: Leonard Rosenman's stunning Beneath the
Planet of the Apes. The 1970 sequel to producer Arthur P. Jacobs'
groundbreaking sci-fi allegory Planet of the Apes picks up directly after
the first film ends, with astronaut George Taylor (Charlton Heston)
exploring the lifeless Forbidden Zone of a planet where apes evolved from
men. But Taylor soon disappears in a terrifying illusion, leaving Nova
(Linda Harrison) and another human explorer newly landed on the planet
(James Franciscus as Brent) to dodge gorilla patrols in Ape City and
eventually stumble on a twisted civilization of underground mutants.

Taking over for Jerry Goldsmith, composer Leonard Rosenman retained the
neoprimitive musical underpinnings of the ape world while creating a score
very much written in his own, inimitable style. The result bridges the
alien soundscape Rosenman created for Fantastic Voyage with the percussive
barbarism always associated with the upside-down civilization of the ape
planet. Rosenman's Beneath the Planet of the Apes is as inventive and
otherworldly as Goldsmith's original Apes score, yet Rosenman's approach is
in its way diametrically opposed to Goldsmith's--composed of
vertically-stacked layers of sound, clanging, metallic effects, bristling,
rambunctious chase music and a perverse, chaotic march for the ape army.
Add to this some striking electronic effects and a bizarre choral mass
written for the atomic bomb-worshipping mutants, and you have the recipe
for one of the most original science fiction movie scores ever written.

For years Leonard Rosenman's Beneath the Planet of the Apes score has been
available to collectors only in the form of a strange concept album
released in conjunction with the movie. For this LP Rosenman was asked to
rearrange his score for a smaller orchestra and add contemporary elements
including electric guitar performances and rock percussion. Leavening these
stylistic departures from his original score were several dialogue
sequences from the film, another common practice from the old days of
motion picture soundtrack albums that persists today. For the FSM Silver
Age Classics release we have gone back to the original score as heard in
the film in dynamic stereo sound, including every note Rosenman recorded
for the movie, electronic music and sound effects (some created to
sonically illustrate the mind-controlling abilities of the film's mutants)
and the score's hair-raising Mass for the Bomb.

This score has never been available before in its original form, and as a
bonus we've included the complete original LP arrangements and dialogue
snippets, which provide a striking contrast between the score Rosenman
originally wrote and its adaptation as a popular soundtrack album. It's the
second musical piece in the Planet of the Apes puzzle, and a fascinating
companion piece to both the original Planet of the Apes score and Leonard

I finally got my Medicom Ultra Detailed Zira.  It's Fantastic!  Except for
the green boots it's perfect.  Not since the Addar resin kits has there been
anything this good, and this is even better.  Not very posable, but I'd trade
accuracy for flexibility any time.  The back of the box has the usual
Japanese idiosyncrasies.  Milo is called Miro.

I'm guessing Greatest Ape is The Lawgiver, and there's 3 different soldier
apes.  Don't ask me who Ceaser Land's Ape is, or how he differs from Ceaser,
or indeed Caesar. But there are 19 in all.  The only pictures are of Zira,
Lucius and Ursus on the box, but they all look great.  I can't wait to get my
Zira Astronaut!  Here's the complete list as it appears on the box . . .

Zira
Lucius
General Ursus
Cornelius
Soldier Ape

General Urko
Taylor

Nova
General Aldo
Zira (Astronaut)

Hello!
Thought you might like to know that Japanese toy manufacturer Medicom has
announced that they will soon release 3 different tin windup character
"robots" based on the classic PLANET OF THE APES series.
You can see a photo of them at JustBe Distribution's website:

Thought you might be interested!
I can't wait to get them -- just wish they had done one of Charlton Heston as
Taylor in his Astronaut suit. Oh well -- maybe they will later!

They're remaking "Planet of the Apes" without
Charlton Heston!  IF this turn of events displeases
you as much as it displeases me, then do something
about it by Contacting:
Richard Zanuck (new "Apes" producer), Tom Rothman
(Film Group President), and Tom sherak (Film Group
Chairman) at:
20th Century fox, PO Box 900, Beverly Hills, CA

Tell them WE WANT CHUCK--HE'S TAYLOR-MADE FOR THE NEW
"APES"!
(After all, a "Planet of the Apes" without Charlton
Heston is like...a talking human in the Year
3978...they're both mutants.)
Don't you agree?

Producer Zanuck can also be emailed at his own

Thanks for reading.

Anyone catch the blurb on Wahlberg being cast in the remake in this
weeks Time Magazine? (The one with Life on the Mississippi on the
cover) It's on page 118 in the People section. Written by Josh
Tyrangiel. Has a picture of Wahlberg smiling like Buster Poindexter.
It's titled "Damn Dirty Gen-X Ape" Here's the complete text:" Cast
Keanu Reeves as Moses in The Ten Commandments if you like. Make
Freddie Prinze Jr. into the new Judah Ben-Hur. But why, why, why must
Hollywood desecrate Charlton Heston's perfect performance as Colonel
George Taylor in Planet of the Apes? Mark (Marky Mark) Wahlberg, 29,
signed on this week to fill Heston's giant sandals as the cluelessly
histrionic time traveller in Tim Burton's reimagining of the great
ape film, tentatively scheduled for a July 4, 2001 release. (Wahlberg
has already committed to the sequel.) Gary Oldman is reportedly being
considered for the role of the evil president of the ape assembly. No
word if Wahlberg will sport a Calvin Klein loincloth." Enjoy, John

Hey All,

I finally finished up the last of my 12" Apes customs.  Thanks for everyone
on the Zira boot/shoe color thang.

I basically was really bummed at the quality of the 12" Hasbro Apes line.
The bodies sucked and the costumes were wrong in some ways (mostly the
coloring).  So I put all of my apes on Adam bodies (the ultra-posable 12"
Joe body made by Dragon) and fixed them up (added hair, dyed clothes,
etc..).  When it came to Ursus, I individually casted armor plates in resin
and constructed his body armor.  Took forever.  And yes, Nova is a Barbie.

The pictures aren't the greatest, but I figured that I'd give you guys and
gals a look and then take better pics later.

Journalism's gone into the toilet.

From The Hollywood Reporter:

Warren dives into Burton's 'Apes' remake

Newcomer Estella Warren is in final negotiations to join Mark Wahlberg
in director Tim Burton's "Planet of the Apes" remake for 20th Century
Fox. Details on the project are being keeping under wraps, but the story
is different from the original in that Wahlberg is a pilot instead of an
astronaut. It's believed that she will play Wahlberg's love interest,
but the studio would not confirm that. The project, being scripted by
William Broyles Jr., is expected to begin shooting in the fall for a
projected July 4 release. Warren, a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model
and former nationally ranked Canadian synchronized swimmer, has only
been acting for several months, having landed roles in Michael Rymer's
indie feature "Perfume" and Tapestry Films' indie feature "Tangled" (a k
a "Conspiracy of Weeds") opposite Rachael Leigh Cook. Warren went before
the cameras this week for Warner Bros./Franchise Pictures' "Champs" for
director Renny Harlin. The film, shooting in Toronto, stars Sylvester
Stallone and Til Schweiger

IF the TV series is ever released on VHS or DVD in North America, it will be probably after the release of the new movie in anticipation of capitalizing on the renewed interest in "APES" w/ the new movie. As I mentioned, I'm not certain, but am only making an assumption.
On the topic of new merchandise, for us collectors it will be interesting to see if the New stuff is successful. As huge as the movies were for their time, I remember seeing a LOT of  "Jurassic Park" and "ID-4" merchandise in the bargain bins.

Good Call Ken. Actor Wright King played the corrupt surgeon, Galen, who tampered

We used Wright King's pants for our Cornelius display on the Apemania website.

But if you own the rights to something, I suppose you can call anything that,
and add or remove characters as you please. But as much as I like the
original, even that wasn't exactly faithful to the book. Look at the TV
series' that made it to the big screen. Wild Wild West and Lost in Space
spring to mind. They had little or nothing to do with the show. And IMHO
were both crap. Just because something is new doesn't mean it's improved.
Star Wars has been going down hill for years.

    Hi Phil,

We just added a CONQUEST gorilla display to the site:
    <http://apemania.com/DISPLAYS.htm>

and, NO, we won't be doing any of the NEW film's merchandise (it's not
in our contract with FOX). So just keep your eyes peeled to ebay for
the 500 or so costumes when the movie is released!!!

Are you kidding me. That is really kick ass!

That's really cool Dave, thanks for sharing that.
Makes for a great intro image to a web site. All I need now is an intro sound clip to go with it.

    Hummm...  :o)

did you find anyone for the interview?
if so, I'd like to hear more about the show !

Hello!  I am a BBC radio producer based in London.  I am looking to set up
an interview with a good talker from the POTA Fan Club regarding the re-make
due out in July 2001.  Ideally, I'd like to speak to a fan from the UK, but
a fan from the USA is also fine, provided they are good talkers, and know
    their subject!

The interview will be broadcast on the Radio Five Live Breakfast programme
on Thursday 4 January 2001.  This is all speach news and sport programme
which tends to be live.  Depending on where the guest comes from we would
prefer to do the interview live, alternatively we can pre-record it -
particularly if you come from the USA.

If you can help at all, please call me on the number below.  If you're
calling from the USA, the international code is "00 44" then you dial "20
    8624 9501".

I look forward to hearing from you.

Dear PLANET OF THE APES INTERNATIONAL FAN CLUB

I thought my new book (Self-Worth Now!) would make a good edition to your POTA NEW PRODUCTS page.

In the last chapter of the book, I describe one of the most amazing and life-changing occurrences of my life: While I have attached the full chapter, it basically describes how I was able to recreate my fetal life through the end credits of the original Planet of the Apes film. It enabled me to have memories of my biological mother, whom I have never met.

While this is a far cry from books such as Eric Greene’s, I feel it is an important and unexplored aspect of POTA lore. Most of the reviews of my book always mention the POTA part of it. In fact David Gerrold , who wrote Battle for the Planet of the Apes, was so impressed that he wrote a major review of my book.

Anyway, I have either attached or sent the relevant part of my book to you. I would be more than happy to send you an autographed copy should you wish to read the whole thing (free of charge of course.) Self-Worth Now! has just been bought by iUniverse for reprint rights, and it has also been nominated by the SOHP as one of their favorite books of 2000.

Please contact me should you need more information.

    Warmly,

    Mike Selby
