Dear Terry,

Just this past year my interest in POTA was revived from the ashes of my
being a devoted POTA fan years ago.  I was thirteen when I first saw the
movie and I've been ape about it since then, my interest expanding into
science fiction and fantasy.

As an aspiring writer for children's books I just recently started writing
about the apes and has had a poem published by Alex Ruiz, Prophecysite. I
also have written a story entiltled MYTH,  which is about 25,000
words.  I've been reading the story to my writer's group.  Suprisingly
they've given MYTH good reviews, suggesting I put the story in a
world of my own so I can have MYTH published professionaly

But I prefer to remain POTA because most of the story
is intervwoven into the events that occured in Conquest and Escape.  To do
that brings me to ask you a question Alex said you might be able to
answer.  That is; what's up with the copyright?

I know it involves a lot of money as I've been warned.  Other than that
I'm groping in the dark.

I have my doubts that MYTH can be publish professionly. As reality speaks,
I would have to be famous,or a well established, science fiction writer to
even be considered. But that won't stop me from writing POTA stories. For
me, writing about the apes is like wearing an old, comfortable, pair of
shoes your mom keeps throwing away.  Like David Gerrold told me a long
time ago, write what you know and just do it.

Fox goes "Ape" with merchandising

By Dana Harris

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Twentieth Century Fox hopes its big summer
picture "Planet of the Apes" will generate a lot of monkey business
in the merchandising world.

Together with toy manufacturer Hasbro and specialty marketer Applause,
the studio has unveiled a major marketing push for the Tim Burton
epic.

The program, which will be launched at New York's Intl. Toy Fair (Feb.
11-15), is expected to generate revenues for the studio along the
lines of those for other Fox event titles such as "Independence Day"
or "X-Men."

Hasbro will unveil a line of action figures and collectible toys at
the Toy Fair, and will ship them to retailers just before the film's
July release.

Dark Horse Comics will publish "Planet" comic books and graphic
novels, while Buster Brown will produce footwear. In addition to
traditional products such as lunch boxes, posters, knit caps, trading
cards, T-shirts and backpacks, the "Planet" line will also include
dioramas, inflatable furniture, scooters and scooter heads, underwear,
clocks and shower caps.

The picture, which began shooting Nov. 6, is expected to wrap in
April. Mark Wahlberg, Helena Bonham Carter and Michael Clarke Duncan
star.

Hi Terry

My name is Brian Pendreigh and I am a freelance film journalist and author
based in Scotland. I write regularly for the Sunday Times, Guardian and a
number of other papers, but for the last few months I have been working
full-time - six days a week - on a book about Planet of the Apes, which will
be published worldwide by Macmillan in July.

I have already done a lot or research on the subject and have interviewed
several of the key personnel who are still around, unearthing what I feel is
some very exciting new material. I will be visiting Los Angeles later this
month to trawl through the various archives (and visit John Chambers in
hospital), and then I have two further months to knock the whole MS into
shape.

I found your web site very useful, particularly in the early days of my
research and I will of course acknowledge its usefulness in the book. I have attached a very brief outline of the book and my CV.

Best wishes, Brian Pendreigh

What will he find out there?
His destiny...

"Oh my God, I'm back. I'm home, all the time. You finally really did it, you
maniacs. You blew it up. God damn you. God damn you all to Hell."

The camera pulls back from Charlton Heston, standing at the water's edge on a
beach, on a distant planet, where apes rule and humans are slaves. The camera
backs off to reveal the top half of a statue poking through the sand, a
familiar crowned head and an arm holding aloft the torch of freedom and
welcome. The Statue of Liberty is instantly recognisable in all its symbolic
shame. What it means is that space traveller Heston has gone precisely
nowhere. The Planet of the Apes is none other than Earth.

THE LEGEND OF THE PLANET OF THE APES:
Or How Hollywood Turned Darwin Upside Down
By Brian Pendreigh

That final scene in Planet of the Apes was one of the most effectively
shocking in the history of cinema. Planet of the Apes was filmed at the
height of the Cold War when fears of nuclear apocalypse were at their height,
but its conclusion remains one of the most dramatic, surprising and chilling
in cinema. But in that ending lay the beginnings of a legend...

Proposals to make a film based on Pierre Boulle's novel Monkey Planet were
met with widespread disdain in Hollywood in the early Sixties. He had written
the source novel for Bridge on the River Kwai, but even Boulle regarded Mokey
Planet as a minor and unfilmable work. Rod Serling, the former paratrooper
who virtually invented TV sci-fi with The Twilight Zone, brought credibility
to the script, but it took the personal involvement of Charlton Heston to get
the film made.

A huge hit, it grossed more than $25 million on its initial cinema release in
1968. Its success led to demand for a follow-up, despite the opposition of
Heston, who thought a sequel would put it in the same category as Andy Hardy.
But the success of the sequels rewrote the Hollywood rulebook and, for better
or worse, set the fashion for action "franchises" for three decades.

Planet of the Apes was a phenomenon. There were to be four sequels, two TV
series - one live-action, one cartoon, and a whole range of merchandising,
from bubble-gum cards to ape masks to mugs and waste-paper baskets. The
exploitation of Planet of the Apes merchandising opportunities would
encourage George Lucas to accept merchandising rights rather than money on
Star Wars.

On screen, Planet of the Apes spawned a fashion not just for sequels, but for
science-fiction films set in a post-apocalyptic future, including of course
Mad Max; and for sci-fi that contained not just scary aliens, but also
social, political and religious commentary. But its influence did not stop
there. In the first Apes sequel, young, idealistic, placard-carrying
chimpanzees protest against the militaristic regime and the gorilla army.
Other genres, including the western, began to use their storylines to comment
on contemporary social issues and on the war in Vietnam.

It was a time of turmoil and social revolution not just on the Planet of the
Apes, but also on Earth as we used to know it, when man was at the top of the
food chain.

But Planet of the Apes never lost sight of its principal commitment and that
was as a piece of first-rate storytelling and entertainment.

Commercially and critically successfull at the time of release, it has grown
in stature over the years. It remains hugely popular, but it has also
acquired a cult following as dedicated as that of The Wicker Man or This is
Spinal Tap, but considerably bigger. The videos are best-sellers and big
prices are paid for original merchandising. Its position in popular culture
can be measured by the number of references made to it in The Simpsons, one
of the most cineliterate shows on TV.

This month 20th Century Fox begins shooting a $100 million remake, or
"reimagination" of Planet of the Apes, with the working title of The Visitor.
Arnold Schwarzenegger, the 90s equivalent of Heston, was linked to the film,
but it is Mark Wahlberg who will play the human hero. The ape cast is headed
by Tim Roth, with Michael Clarke Duncan, the condemned man in The Green Mile
as his lieutenant, a huge silverback gorilla, and Helena Bonham Carter as an
ape princess. Rumour has it she will have an affair with Wahlberg's
character. It seems unlikely but the director is Tim Burton, one of the most
exciting and original directors in Hollywood today, with a CV that includes
Batman, Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood and The Nightmare Before Christmas; and
the idea of a half-human, half-ape boy was included in the script for the
first sequel.

The Visitor could just turn out to be one of the biggest hits of all time.
AND THE PROVISIONAL US RELEASE DATE IS 27 JULY 2001... JUST NINE MONTHS AWAY!

In its own right, Planet of the Apes merits a book, looking at its making,
legend and legacy. But its commercial potential would be boosted enormously
if publication tied in with the release of the remake, and ended with a
chapter or two previewing the new film. If the new film is a big hit, it will
boost interest in the original and its sequels. If the new film fails to
measure up, then the standing of the original may even be enhanced.

I would propose to tell the entire story of the Planet of the Apes phenomenon
from Boulle's novel through to the remake, with interviews, analysis,
anecdotes, gossip and trivia, though the focus would be on the original 1968
film that continues to attract huge audiences on TV and video. I would also
like to take a humorous, sideways look at Hollywood's and America's view on
Darwin's theory of evolution.

accompanied the Commando to Central America, swam with sharks, crewed on a

by the Scottish Examination Board. It was about what seagulls think about
people in outdoor swimming pools, which says more about exam boards than the
author.

Hi Terry!  I don't think we did it at the time.  However, when the film
starts to be made or is released we are bound to do something on it.
Five Live is quite a tabloidy radio station - we aim to give a bang up to
date news and sports service with an accessible and fun feel to it.  More
than two million people now listen in the UK - and more on the internet.  We
have our own website too www.bbc.co.uk/fivelive - perhaps you could have a
look at it and let us know what you think?

The breakfast show is presented by Victoria Derbyshire and Julian Worricker.
It is all speech and like the rest of the network aims to produce a less
"stuffy" approach to news - hence our enthusiasm for POTA.

I'd like to keep in touch because there's a strong chance we'll do the story
again.

Best wishes
Helen

Dear Terry:

My name is Adrienne Weiss and I'm running a fact-check on an upcoming book
about "The Planet of the Apes."  There are a few things I'm hoping you can
clarify for me.  First, where the original film was filmed: Malibu Creek
State Park, California, and Port Dune, California?  The second question is
more related to Pierre Boulle - if you know by any chance when his first
novel, "William Conrad," was published?  I'm having a terrible time finding
this info as all sites devoted to Boulle fail to give a full summary of his
writings.  Thanks so much for your time and consideration on this matter.
Your site is unbelievable!!!  So much fun.  Take care,

well that would make sense
its all about marketing!!
sounds like a George Lucas trick !!
I have heard ( but cannot confirm) that all previous Planet Of The Apes products will be placed on moratorium as to dry up the market of "classic" merchandise prior to the release of the new film ( when there will be ALL NEW merchandise). IF the TV series is ever released on VHS or DVD in North America, it will be probably after the release of the new movie in anticipation of capitalizing on the renewed interest in "APES" w/ the new movie. As I mentioned, I'm not certain, but am only making an assumption.
On the topic of new merchandise, for us collectors it will be interesting to see if the New stuff is successful. As huge as the movies were for their time, I remember seeing a LOT of  "Jurassic Park" and "ID-4" merchandise in the bargain bins.
Best,
KEN

Terry,

Thank you for getting back intouch with me!

My Ape project is 99% ready to go. My partner Mark Gonzalez and I are just
touching up the below picture so it looks a little more presentable.

This is the project: I have created replacement heads for those horrible 12"
Planet of the Apes figures. Click on the picture below.

These heads are made of resin and have been expertly sculpted by Jim
Phillips (sculptor of such garage kits as the Escape-o-nauts and Long Live
the King). I am selling these heads for $20 a piece and they come unpainted.

I originally commissioned these heads for my own collection and I am not
selling them to make a profit. Any money generated from a sale is being
poured into the next head.

Feel free to email me back with any comments or suggestions.

please update me Brian on this project Hey Gang,

Brian here again, from APEMANIA.COM.

For just about a year now, since the infestation of  the Kenner/Hasbro line of Planet of the Apes commemorative dolls, we've all been talking back and forth on how the coolest thing (other than the fact that there is new ape product for sale) is the packaging for the new dolls.  Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that there is enough interest in Planet of the Apes to warrant new merchandise, but personally, by today's toy standards, Kenner could have done a much better job with the likenesses and quality of the dolls.

I've read a great deal of comments here on the POTA web group, most of which reflect people's disappointment in the product, even though they are still happy that something NEW is out there.

Because of all the disappointment with Kenner's dolls, we thought we would turn to you the fans FIRST to prevent a similar situation from occurring.

In December we will be debuting our licensed ECONOMY line of Planet of the Apes masks, priced in the $79 (USA) range, but before we get too TOO deep into production, we thought it might be a good idea to contact the real hard-core Planet of the Apes fans (you folks) and get your opinions and suggestions BEFORE we make the product available to the masses.

Imagine that, the consumers actually get to give input and the manufacturer is welcoming it with open ears!  (Are you listening Kenner/Hasbro?  Watch and learn if you are...)

We have posted a couple of fotos of our first ECONOMY prototype on our site, however this design was just a test to see if we could get a convincing look with an inexpensive synthetic hair fabric and to determine how much the latex would shrink over time and if we needed to resculpt and compensate for that shrinkage.  We have gone back and resculpted this item and for aesthetics reduced the size of the chin, and we now are "ape-lying" the same specs to the rest of the characters we will be releasing.  You can all view the first ECONOMY prototype by going to this special link:

http://apemania.com/ECONOMY.htm

Please feel free to let us know what you think or what characters you would most want to see done in an ECONOMY mask.  This is your chance to voice your opinions BEFORE a product hits the shelves.  We want to make sure that every Planet of the Apes fan will like what they see with this line of products.

Thanx for reading and we look forward to your comments.

Gosh Terry, don't you EVER toss out old e-mails?  How old was THIS one????  SHEEESH!!!

Lets' see 15 months ago, aye?   Where were we then...

Well the Apemania ECONOMY mask line is nearly complete.  We are still waiting to release the Zira mask, but she IS coming!!!  Just working out affordable ways of getting her hairdoos  done,  that's all.
The rest of the characters are there:

Cornelius   $109
Zaius   $119
Gorilla Guard   $109
Marcus    $109
Ursus  (available in one piece $149 or 2 pieces $169)
We weren't able to bring the prices in at the $79 range like we had hoped, mainly because of the hair expenses and with the manufacturing staying in the states (for quality control reasons).  We still are working on avenues that will drop all but the Ursus masks prices under 100 clams each, which has been our intention all along.  We are getting closer to being able to meet that target price range, so keep your fingers crossed folks.

We will be retiring the series one Ursus masks soon though.  We hope to release series two Ursus by summer.

You can view the available ECONOIMY MASKS at <http://apemania.com/ECONOMY.htm>
We also offer a complete line of replica Planet of the Apes COSTUMES, authentic down to the last friggen stitch in many cases, and accessories. <http://apemania.com/COSTUMES/Costumes&Acces.htm>
We have a DELUXE PROSTHETIC Mask line, for those fans who want all the advantages of a prosthetic make-up, but with only a fraction of the application time.  <http://www.apemania.com/MASKS.htm> I'm not that thrilled will the examples on the page though.  We'll be changing that real soon!
We also offer complete PROSTHETICS and HAIR sets for those fans with a hard-core streak who want to ape-it-up "the real way" <http://apemania.com/PROSTHETICS.htm>
And for those fans who would rather look at the Apes than wear them, we have:

I think that about covers most of the merchandise issues, although there are some pretty cool things currently in the works.

As far as the APEMANIA troupe is concerned, we plan to be doing a few ape-pearances this year some of which will be to promote FOX INTERACTIVE's release of the interactive CD-ROM game.  Several of our troupe were involved with voice overs and motion capture work for the game.  And yours truly got FOX to hire Booth Colman to do the Zaius voices when our own Laird Macintosh was unavailble (he was in Europe film Speilburg's BAND OF BROTHERS at the time).  Funny how FOX didn't even think to contact many of the old actors to do the voices for their characters for the game.  They were all thrilled when they realized Booth was willing to do it, and he was thrilled to be a part of it.

We had Mr. Colman in the studio early last summer for an interview and handcasting session.  We have obtained Maurice Evan's original Dr. Zaius jacket and shoes as well as other original Dr. Zaius (although not Evan's) costume parts and are now reassembling them all into one really outstanding display mannequin.  We felt it would be an extra added touch to have Booth's hands cast for the mannequin as well.  He is a nice fellow and has some great stories to tell about Evan's and Karloff.

Anyway, that's about all I can ramble on about with our Ape maddness here.  Rick Baker's people did call last week to see if I can find time to come play with them on Tim's film, but I don't know..."people dressed as monkeys?  What if the audience laughs?"

Keep up the good work on your end,

Hey Brad, Terry, and Gang,
Yes, John and his wife are alive and well these days.  And he thanx those of you who were involved with the really nice tribute package that Dave Ballard and the UK fans put together.  When we visited him right before Christmas he was in great spirits.  He loves getting correspondence and visitors.  Please be aware though, because of his stroke, he now has to use his opposie hand for everything, so signing autographs can be difficult for him.  I've seen him struggle with that.
Anyway, if anyone would like to check in with him, you can contact him here:

On the copyright front - it seems that only FOX will permit publication of

No, I'm afraid I never got to see it on E-bay, but it was confirmed by Dark
Horizons that it was logit. And while the auction was cancelled by E-bay
themselves. Dark Horizons was able to keep a link to it from a Tim Burton
Fan Site.

I believe it's called the Burton Collective. Darkhorizons.com has the link
to the site. This guy has a full collection of images that has been released
on the new film.

Nothing new though, just a collection of what we already have or have seen.

Oooh, Can't resist a dare...

Mark's novel (or what I've seen of it so far) is head and shoulders
above any previously published, pota inspired, original fiction.

As a die hard Ape fan it's difficult for me to judge it's appeal for
one unfamiliar with the existing mythos but for anyone who subscribes
to this group bribe Mark with money, sexual favours, or whatever it
takes to obtain the first few chapters.

His characters are real, the language is a delight and the situations
are far more imaginative than the later movies or Tv show ever dared
to be.

Can I have chapter 19 now please?

"WAHLBERG GOING 'APES'

By PAUL F. DUKE ,  CLAUDE BRODESSER

Wahlberg
Mark Wahlberg has signed to take the lead role in 20th Century Fox's "Planet
of the Apes" in a two-picture deal that also includes a sequel.

Pic is scheduled to begin shooting in the fall under director Tim Burton.
Fox plans a high-profile release in summer 2001.

Wahlberg's path to serious talks with Fox was cleared earlier last week,
when his negotiations to star in Paramount's "Criminal Conversations" fell
apart. He stars in Warner Bros.' "The Perfect Storm," opening Friday.

Burton's last pic was "Sleepy Hollow."

Written by Bill Broyles, the latest version of the "Apes" saga is being
produced by Richard Zanuck. Pic is being overseen at Fox by Tom Rothman,
president of 20th Century Fox Film Group, and Hutch Parker, prexy of
production for the studio's TCF label.

Story of the film is still a closely guarded secret, but it's said to be
neither a sequel nor a remake, but rather a reimagining of the original
series of five "Apes" pictures released between 1968 and 1973.

Wahlberg is repped by Endeavor."

I agree with you absolutely on this topic
However I will point out a few different benefits to different readers.

If you use an ezine daily news.
Then you can get a huge long single email.
The benefit is you don't get flooded with emails.
However the bad news is that its way too long, confusing to read, to many repeats from "reply" messages

If you use individual emails
Then you can properly and easily read everyones posts in the order you want and keep what you want to reply to and quickly discard the rest.
However the bad news is that you get flooded with emails.

If you pick one of these methods then obviously the opposite method is going to not work for you at all and therefore you can't please either party!

If you use something like HOTMAIL then I find its easier to keep the "reply" parts of your emails cause it takes so much to go back and forth between emails to read last posts to understand what they are replying to !!

    Hey Terry.
I have a link to John Chambers Tribute tape at:

All the information is there for those who want to purchase it. I just spoke to Scott just yesterday as a matter of fact. And he's making a whole batch of them to sell. Very cool video, you'll find a couple of clips from the video in real player format. Each runs about 2 to 3 minutes.

I'm trying at this moment to gather some media stuff on Rick Baker from Scott for the remake section, and if Scott begins to sell videos on Rick Baker's Remake makeups (after the movie release of course) I'll be posting a link you him as well on that page for purchase. And of course no doubt FOX will have a behind the scenes t.v. program just prior or after the release. So it's just a matter of time.

But the Chambers video is great, Both Scott and Brian did a great job with this  Tribute. It was a very cool thing to do. And very cool to watch.

    Best,

my site and taking a look around. The address is:

I've been busy updating it and have got lots of great pictures of original
apes costumes and weapons, as well as an ape weapons reproduction gallery.

If you like my site, I was wondering if you wouldn't mind adding me to your

Thanks, I hope you like it.

DOES ANYONE REMEMBER THIS LINE QUOTEDIN THE VARIETY ARTICLE BELOW ?
    ANY COMMENTS?

Well, there really isn't much to say on that that hasn't been already said.
Some here think it's good idea, some think it's a bad idea. About Wahlberg being in the movie.

I personaly see nothing wrong with the guy other than the fact that the guy has a bit of an ego problem. But I think he's a good actor, not my number one choice, but I think he'll do fine.

If sequal plans are made ahead of time then no doubt they must believe they have a major Block Buster on their hands. And by doing so I'm hoping they would at least get the earth dates correct this time around. Still waiting to see this teaser trailer. But I'm pretty sure that this trailer won't come out until 20th Century Fox finally gets their POTA REMAKE WEB SITE up. I mean after all there has to be some kind of official sourse that will provide it on the web.

Although I sure as hell would be willing! :o)

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a superbowl commercial, last I heard there's only one spot left, and that spot is being sold for about 3 million dollars.
I don't know who's on the final list as we speak, I was hoping to find it somewhere on the web but no luck.

    Terry,

Thank you so much for helping with this project of mine. I'm going to mail a
Aldo head out to you this weekend. You know how long the mail takes so
expect it somewhere around 3955A.D.--just in time for the world to end.

"how much work / hours does it take to do one
     properly?"

You can paint up a head in about 2 nights. The apes I make for my own
collection have hair and that takes around a weekend. One thing you have to
keep in mind is like all "garage kits" some cleanup is neccesary and these
heads sometimes have tiny air bubbles so a product called "Zap-a-gap" is
needed, Aves Expoy is also really good.

    "how did you start up?"

It was all a progression, like the rest of the world I was completely
dissapointed with Hasbro's 12" ape line where each figure was worse than the
next. I started by painting Ursus gloves, and then moved onto having the
gorilla soldier vest made, but no matter what I did the figure still looked
awful because I was using Hasbro's heads. As you have seen Hasbro's
Cornelious, Zaius, Ursus, the Soldier Ape, and Taylor looked like complete
garbage and then out of the blue the garage kit company "Model Prisoners"
released this resin model called "Long Live the King" which is Ceaser from
Conquest. This was the best representation of an ape I had ever seen. Next
thing I know who is running an ad in a Model Magazine? Jim Phillips and
underneath of his name was "sculptor or the Ceaser kit".

I called Jim and told him I'm only doing this for myself etc. He said after
I sculpt one head it doesn't matter if you make 1 or 100 the mold is made.
Let me tell you sculptors are not for the faint of wallet, so I thought if I
can sell a handful of these heads I can make more charactors, figures that
Hasbro would never even think to make: Julius, Lucius, child Cornelious,
    Brent, Prefect Barlow etc.

That is the whole story and I hope you are still awake.

Below are 3 jpgs of my finished Aldo. I hope you like him. I believe he is
the best figure out there including Medicom (which I was also disappointed
    in).

yeah, like i said it was really ambitious, a little world for each movie, the
was going to be a zforbidden zone (desert) the city from the first one, the
subway system and old new your from the second, a zone where apes and humans
lived equally in a modern day time (sort of like the future would be after
caesar) and a place for apes only, humans only, and mutants only. I thought
this was really cool, and techniclly it is possible, but i havent the time or
energy to engage in such a large project. It's kind of a shame too because
there are little o no good POTA muds out there. there are plenty for star
trek, star wars, xena and hercules, even little know movies and stuff. I
suppose i have no one to blame but myself for not having a cool pota game,
theres probobly lots of other people out there like me who have a descent,
executable idea for something that will please a group of people but time
constraints and the general "complexity" of certain computer programs
extinguish whatever ceational desire they had in them.
Well I think I got off on a little rant there, in closing i wish to thank you
for your interest in my noble cause, and would appreciate a line if any of
you out there ever do stumble upon any pota games out there. perhaps there
will be a new spark of interesst once the new movie comes out this august.

I used Photoshop, which is by far the best graphics package I've used (I
should stress that I only use them for silly things like that ape CD
picture, as I actually have no artistic ability at all), so I do recommend
      that.

However, if it's for making a wallpaper, then I would suggest looking into a
recent version of L-View Pro or whatever it's called. The last version I
looked at actually had a specific option which turned a picture into an
image that could be tiled effectively for a wallpaper (of course this isn't
an issue if you just want one big desktop-sized image). You can download a
shareware trial version of L-View from the web somewhere.

Ape wallpaper, eh? Worth a try...

PS If anyone wants the fullsize picture, email me and tell me what format
you want and what desktop size (I can go as far as 1024x768 at the moment -
anything larger might involve a VERY large file!).

          Alan

Thanks for the advise Alan, there are so many of those type of photo programs that I didn't know which one to choose. I'm basicly looking for one that you can make good mix of images to create wallpaper or even fan made posters like you see on most star wars sites for episode II and III.

Most of those fan made posters look really great for being home made, and when I saw yours it reminded me of those great fan creations. I'm just using a basic photo program that came with my scanner for the site. But to make something of the quality you've made I know I'll have to upgrade my software.

I've always like that fading look as you have done with the gorilla in the background, very well done. If you have anymore of those great fan art works my site is always be open. (and that goes for here at the e-group)

Thanks again for the info Alan.

It never ceases to amaze me, with all of the photo reference available, DVD's, videos, stills, etc., etc., etc, that folks still miss the mark.  One would think if they are going to commit to the investment of time required to create an ape piece, that they would do just a little more research to get the likenesses and the details close to the original character(s).  I know it's a tough row to hoe, but still...

Yet it is wonderful to see that Planet of the Apes still inspires so many people to create and keep the faith alive!  More power to them all.

It'd help if the official guys bothered to get it right. My DVD of
Beneath has a still of Roddy from Battle on the cover and the menu,
and the DVD for Conquest features a gorilla from the TV series . . .

Photo Deluxe is good - it's basically PhotoShop with less of the fancy
features. Certainly everything I've done can be done on Photo Deluxe, and
having seen the picture you did (nice!) you certainly don't have trouble
creating nifty pictures with it either. (And it was free with my scanner -

Yeah, Photoshop is usually used by color correction houses and ad agencies to
tweak their work digitally. I've played around with it at school. I'd love
to have it, but unless the price comes down or someone come up with something
similar, with a more consumer friendly price I'm stuck with photo deluxe too.
Unless you can think of a way to make it pay for itself, I recommend putting
that money towards your next computer.

And yes I do agree LordTZero that unless you have a purpose of making money off of it, it wouldn't be wise to buy such a program. Or unless you get a hold of it like Alan did. With Scanner. (or win the lotto)

Hey all, it's nice to find you guys! Brief intro: I'm an American
living in England who's been a POTA fan forever; fave characters all
have the name McDowall behind them (trend-spotters, I'm female); love
the entire kit and kaboodle but am especially fond of the short-lived
tv series. (Still wishing a pox on CBS...and hey, gee, it worked!)

Coupla questions I hope someone can answer --

            1) Why was "The Liberator" never aired during the series' first run
in '74? Did it have to do with the controversial content, or did CBS
just close the door period? I'm curious because I think I saw
somewhere that the last aired ep, "Up Above the World So High", was
filmed after "The Liberator", which means the two aired out of
sequence. (I'll warn you, I'm a conspiracy-theorist...but only in the
            nicest way. :)

            2) Nothing against any Aussies in the crowd, but why were first
distribution video rights to the series bestowed on Australia? Seems
a bit crazy to test the waters there, since the majority of
interested buyers use NTSC format, not PAL. Further, why'd it take so
dang long? I mean, 26 years?!

Toddling off now. Any complaints, see my pal Pete H. He's the one who
dropped me into -- er, directed me here. ;) /Mez

I just went ahead and downloaded the tryout version from their official web site. The tryout version is for their 6.0 version and is about 40.5 Megs in size. 2) Nothing against any Aussies in the crowd, but why were first
distribution video rights to the series bestowed on Australia? Seems
a bit crazy to test the waters there, since the majority of

            Hi there. No offence taken.
Fox Home Entertainment own the rights worldwide for the "Planet Of The
            Apes" TV series in perpetuity.
The release of the series here in Australia was a result of my own
personal lobbying. I work at Fox Home Entertainment and after the success
of the Movie series box set, believed that there would be a degree of
interest in the TV series as it had never previously been released on
video. We developed the packaging locally mostly using screen grabs.
Anyway, the release was moderately successful even though we didn't have
the marketing budget of the the movie box set to promote it's release.
As I've mentioned previously to the group, I believe that if the new
movie does huge business, Fox will be looking for opportunities to
generate more revenue from the franchise which could well include
wordwide releases of the TV series on video and maybe even DVD.
Either that, or maybe Columbia House may strike a deal w/ Fox to release
it like they do w/ other classic TV shows.
I guess we'll have to see what happens July 27.
            Best,
            KEN

            .html
            Hola POTA people...

Just got the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly in the mail today (issue
            #579/580 double issue, dated Jan. 26/February 2,2001). It's EW's "Our Guide
to 2001" issue. There's a small piece at the top of page 46 about the new
movie but no new insight really. Two things in it though: first, there's a
picture of Tim Burton and Mark Wahlberg on one of the sets or on location,
previously unseen/unreleased photo I believe. Markie Mark is sporting
short, military-ish hair and looks like he's been eating one too many
            bananas lately. Just my opinion.

The small article (7 sentences) is mostly rehash and reiterates Burton's
vague plans but they do quote Zanuck as saying, "It doesn't take place in
Earth's future...This time it it's a totally different planet. But there is
a surprise ending" ( quote out of Entertainment Weekly). I don't remember
hearing anything specific about a different planet but it would fit it with
some of the storylines that are out there, Wahlberg and his mission. Quite
cool, small as it was. I won't elaborate further plot-wise in case someone
here hasn't heard; check the internet or write me if you haven't heard the
story line(s). I'll scan the photo this week and throw it on my website,
            I'll tell y'all when it's up.

Uh-oh, I feel a rant coming on, allow me to briefly preach to the choir.
It kills me that they relegated the piece to a 3x3 inch piece thrown in
a corner in the middle of the magazine. Um, I know there's a lot of movies
getting some buzz this year, especially after 2000's sorry display, but
isn't the Apes one of the hottest releases this summer (the?)? Does
            Rollerball really
deserve half a page and Jurassic Park 12 (or whatever number they're up
            to...) needs
three quarters of a page? Yawwwwwwn. Not to mention this year's
installment of Eddie Murphy's yearly suck-a thon and the Mummy 2 getting
bigger write-ups than the new Planet of the Apes film?? I'm delusional,
right? I know many of us here are lunatic fans ( just a tad biased too...)
and this year marks ends almost 30 years of waiting (quite deservedly so, I
think even a non-fan should agree this is a great film to "revision")
Just glance at the facts surrounding the pabulum coming out recently ,
especially with 95% of the sequels/remakes that
Hollywood is squatting and squeezing out, trying to sell us these days). I
don't know the full scope of the planned marketing (pretty huge from word
            that's out, right?) but
I hope this is just one dumbass, ignorant magazine with it's own bland
agenda. They did give the upcoming Lord of Rings a cover picture and two
full pages and I can respect that, even never having read any Tolkien.
            Given
the scope of that project and geez, those poor fans have waited longer
than we had to I think, didn't they? Give 'em press, making three of them
at once. But c'mon, that frickin' isn't out until, what, Christmas!? You
know they'll feature it in their holiday films issue and give it a cover.

Whatever. I'll like the new film no matter I'm sure (hey, this is MY Star
Wars and Lord of the Rings dammit I've been waiting 29ish years! Since my
Dad me took to the Go Ape! festival in the early 70's, all FIVE in one day.
What a lucky 7 year-old I was) Aw hell, even a sucky film would be better
than none. I'm sure we're all thrilled that there's been promising news in
the reports and leaks coming out. The make-up alone will be worth price of
admission not to mention the cameos and stuff we don't know yet (go Linda
Harrison and hopefully Heston!). Love or hate Tim Burton, you have to give
him props for his originality, creative vision and bizarreness in about all
of his films. Let's just pray the script doesn't rot and that Burton
develops his biggest (it is, right?) commercial endeavor wisely. Zanuck on
board is gravy, needless to say. Couldn't have wished for much better
            overall.

I'll save my rant about the original POTA being absolutely revolutionary,
then and now in many ways: commercially successful, critically well-received
and ground breaking in it's marketing. It set the stage for the Star Wars
marketing blitz in some ways, once again IMHO. Its political, social and
societal insight of the time that, whatever one's feelings about the
sequels, broke ground time and again. Not to mention its stood the test of
time. POTA was having figures released, by Hasbro no less, 30 years after
the fact and before the remake was even greenlighted. It rewrote what could
be done with make-up too as we all know as well of sci-fi from it's release
and its influence hasn't stopped. Can't think of a movie immediately that
covered all those bases and still does to date. So much for saving that
            rant...

OK, I went on too long. Hopefully didn't lose anyone, just spewing here.
Damn Entertainment Weekly got me worked up. Have a great week all! Please
let there be word about a trailer soon, it seems to be my main reason for
going to the movies these days! I'm guessing it'll be attached to the next
"big' Fox release, gotta look that up.

Last things, I swear: Some recommended reading if you haven't checked these
out already, especially with the remake looming. MUST reads for the true
            POTA fans:

-Planet of the Apes as American Myth: Race, Politics and Popular Culture by
            Eric Greene

I'm sure many know about this OUTSTANDING book, chock full of surprise
            behind
the scenes nuggets that just don't seem to stop. It's worth just scanning
the complete cast listings on every POTA movie, TV show and cartoon, people
I didn't know were in them (Army Archerd?). It was published about 5 years
ago by the author as a thesis (I think it was a thesis project) while on an
            English
fellowship at Wesleyan University. Naturally the title subject matter alone
is a great read but the book contains such a huge amount of POTA info, tons
            I hadn't
known prior. There's incredible rarely- if-ever seen behind the
            scenes/pre-production photos, many from the
Loyola Marymount University's Charles Von der Ahe archive collection (HUGE
Arthur Jacobs photo arrive there) as well personal photos from Natalie
Trundy Jacobs private collection. The breadth of the information is
phenomenal, especially when you consider it's a relatively small book for
such a study that covers all 5 films and the TV shows along with
merchandising and talk of the remake.

Check out the amazing filmography, detailed notes, complete movie and TV
            cast listings and a
superb bibliography. If you've got a POTA website, very strongly suggested
reading (depending on your site's angle). I have a link somewhere for the
Jacobs photo collection at Marymount, I can pass it on. Fox has a great
photo vault too I hear but you gotta know somebody to access that. You can
pick it up on Amazon. Not sure if Eric Greene is on the list here but I do
            see him bid on
            ebay now and again.

-If you haven't read any of Heston's two retrospectives, either his
personal journals "The Actor's Life" (published end of 70's I think, his
first book?, maybe hard to find though) or his
autobiography, "In the Arena", make sure you at least read Chuck's account
of the development and production of the original Apes movie, especially as
he was integral in getting it made. You can't be without the Chuck
perspective in a way only he can tell. There's cool behind the scenes stuff
all a la Heston, great accounts of his thoughts and views on it and of the
            time, especially
how it (miraculously) came together. There's unique insider stuff in both
but it bothered me that Heston dissed Linda Harrison a bit in the POTA
section of "The Actor's Life". Completely unnecessary. Yeah Chuck, you're
great, everyone knows but he chose to apparently ignore perspective. Anyone
ever see that? Not cool on any level, showed no class at all, especially so
if you've ever met Linda Harrison. She's as gracious and sweet as they
            come.

-not really recommended reading from a POTA fan perspective, but
a reference to the films: writer David Sedaris (NPR, This American Life
radio) has a short story in a previous
book of his, "Naked", titled "planet of the apes". There's just a brief
            mention in the beginning, the
story starts with him waiting to be picked up from the all day Go Ape! movie
marathon in the early 70's. Sedaris is absolutely hysterical though, you
            should read some of
his short stories just to laugh at aneurysm-inducing levels.

...and lastly, They Might Be Giants have a bunch of Planet o'the Apes songs
            hidden
on their most recent live album.

            I'm done, I promise!

sure it won't be long before we'll see a few answers.

Greetings from Washington State!  Glad to have found others interested in POTA .  I am on a quest: For the last year I have been attempting to collect a full set of the Movie trading cards (AB&C Gum aka Topps UK) issued in the UK in 1969.  They are smaller than the U.S. and Canadian cards issued by Topps and have black borders rather than white.  I managed to locate 11 of these cards last year in England, but have not been able to locate more.  I am calling on the assistance of my fellow POTA collectors to help me assemble this rare set.  Also, I have been collecting POTA merchandise since 1974 and have cards and comics for sale or trade, most EX/NM condition. I prefer to trade rather than sell, as that is what the hobby is supposed to be about.   Sincerely, Bob.

Hi Ken, thanks for your reply, and my most sincere apologies for
jumping to conclusions. I tend to look at these things in terms of
big bad corporations, but you're a man to be admired! Thanks for what
must have been a lot of hard work on your part. Fox's tack for
worldwide release seems positive; let's hope Burton does his bit for
                  the cause successfully.

Is the video still available? I've seen it on eBay, but have been
holding out for a pristine copy. /Mez

Hey Rick, nice bit about Entertainment Weekly. As to why POTA got short
shrift, I guess it's because it's just a bland, dumbass mag. I'm looking
forward to Empire & Total Films take on POTA(They're 2 very good Brit Mags)
And the new movie mag in the US, Total Movie, looks to be promising. And by
the way, I agree with you on Heston's diss of Linda in An Actors Story. I
few years back, I was in an old bookstore and came across it. Of course I
went right to the POTA section. "Keep her immobile for most of her scenes"?
It didn't seem very nice, but being a Linda fan, thought I was overreacting.
Glad to see someone else had the same take on it. I thought Chuck's
rumination on "The biggest casting problem is Nova. Who will play her and how
naked can she be?" was pretty interesting. Oh and by the way, flipping
through the rest of the book, I came across a reefer leaf pressed inside.
                  Verrrry Interesting....... Later, John

I've got two now, '75 and '76. My husband thinks I'm reliving my

Don't worry. That's the reaction of most to Apes fans.
Some people just don't realize how cool talkin' monkey's can be!

Lucky those chimps and gorillas killed each other so those orangutans could
escape! Sheeesh! What the hell movie was this guy watching? I might have
liked to have seen this . . . 'lost episode'.

                  Damn!

I hate it when people review movies they obviously haven't seen.
This idiot wrote for news week? And I thought journalism was bad these days.
It must have started long ago... In a galaxy far far away . . .
