Well that storyline pretty much covers what's been said on the internet months ago. And I personaly think that Leo's  importance in the Battle is that he discovers that the genetic ape arrived centuries before him (Half buried ship) and therefore causing the whole problem on the planet.

Now whether it's earth or not, that still remains to be seen.
Because if I say it isn't earth as it's been said, then I can easly mean, the earth we know. So it all comes down towards how one looks at it.

Just a thought.

Best,

Alex

Well, I'm pretty much still in a state of shock over it, I just hope this guy isn't still around to place an article about the new remake.
I can see his article now: "Walhberg travels back in time to find planet dominated by humans!" "Oh the horror!"

Greetings from Washington State!  Glad to have found others interested in POTA .  I am on a quest: For the last year I have been attempting to collect a full set of the Movie trading cards (AB&C Gum aka Topps UK) issued in the UK in 1969.  They are smaller than the U.S. and Canadian cards issued by Topps and have black borders rather than white.  I managed to locate 11 of these cards last year in England, but have not been able to locate more.  I am calling on the assistance of my fellow POTA collectors to help me assemble this rare set.  Also, I have been collecting POTA merchandise since 1974 and have cards and comics for sale or trade, most EX/NM condition. I prefer to trade rather than sell, as that is what the hobby is supposed to be about.   Sincerely, Bob.

        Hi Ape-O-Nuts!

Linda Harrison tells me she thinks the new script is as good or better than the original and that her cameo was very Novaesque. The "official" script synopsis makes it sound like a different planet, like Zanuck said (not Earth of the past, present, future, or somewhere in between). Otherwise, it doesn't tell us much we didn't know. Sounds like the humans and the apes will be on an almost even playing field. I found interesting reports that the Tim Roth character is named Cornelius, since he's the bad guy. By the way, Tim Roth fans will have double the joy this year. They can collect him either as an ape (POTA) or as a human (a "Reservoir Dogs" set of action figures is due in Ape-ril, er, April).

Welcome, Mez. As to your question about "The Liberator", it WAS shown during the original run of the series as far as I know, and "Above the World..." was shown last (and, according to Ron Harper, the latter was filmed after they had been cancelled). Someone mentioned the low priority the press seems to be placing on "Apes" over other movies this year, and I noticed that too. POTA got a little box in EW, and a little box in last Sunday's LA Times while people are slobbering over "Lord of the Rings" and "Harry Potter", which don't open 'til Christmas. (And next summer's "Spiderman"). Yes, those have a big following, but it takes alot more people to fill movie theatres than it does to make a hit book. POTA wasn't a hit book, it was a hit MOVIE, so I'd put my money on that. People are calling "Rings" the next "Star Wars" (even the last "Star Wars" wasn't the next "Star Wars"!) but sword and sorcery has a miserable record at the box office. Even the MAN himself, George Lucas, failed with "Willow". Ridley Scott, Mr. "Gladiator" and maker of the anticipated "Hannibal", failed with "Legend". Moviegoers want sci-fi, dammit, not fairies. "Harry Potter" reminds me of an '80's flop called "Young Sherlock Holmes", which had no less than SPIELBERG attached, and was written by "Harry Potter"'s director, Chris Columbus (an "Apes" remake alumni himself). Make mine "Apes"!

And make mine "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" ! A friend of mine invited me on the set to see them film a POTA parody. This is directed by Kevin Smith, the comedy titan known for stuff like "Chasing Amy" , "Clerks", "Dogma" and, ahem, "Mallrats". We are also eternally grateful that he apparently gave the world Matt Damon and Ben Affleck (he produced "Good Will Hunting"). Anyway, this new one is a parody of Hollywood and they drove us out in vansto this farm that's a hop , skip and a jump (well, I don't skip but you know what I mean) from Malibu Creek, where lots of the original "Apes" were filmed (OK, it's more like a hop, drive and take a freeway, but it's the same kind of geography). Anyway, they had a small cornfield and even had the classic "scarecrows"  in the background. I watched as the apes were made up. They couldn't get too close to the originals per Fox, so they wound up looking more like "Greystoke" apes. They looked more like Rick Baker apes than the Rick Baker apes I've seen for the new POTA. That was the irony. Plus the costumes had to be different but they looked the same from a distance. Animatronics were also involved, but the apes were played by skilled horse riders and shot at lowly humans. It was a parody of the cornfield hunt by way of "Clerks". From what I hear it will open on Aug. 10, a mere 2 weeks after "Apes", a nice dessert (or perhaps an antidote for those who don't like the remake).

Smith said he loved the original "Apes" and hopes for this to be "funny". He admitted to me trepidation about the remake but was impressed by the now famous teaser poster. When he found out who I was, he requested I not publicize the "Apes" parody. Sucker! No, he was really cool. He could have really nailed me, confiscated the camera, whatever. And I couldn't blame him these days. I got out there by his vehicles so it wasn't like I could drive away. I respect that, so I'm not going to put these pictures out there yet. I'm just as much a glutton for internet scoops as anyone, but I'm not going to throw stolen goods out there. Those "Ape" makeup tests are pretty poor compared to the "official" shots released recently and it's not really fair to the filmakers to grab something and eat away at their work little by little. If it's out there I won't ignore it, but I don't want to do spoil Kevin's surprise. He's a good guy. But there's no crime in giving a heads up to my pals here in the group, eh?

        .html Hi Alex,

Yeah, Medicom has really outdone themselves with the line.  We don't usually bother to promote mainstream merchandise on the APEMANIA site, but these are just so incredible we felt it warranted noting and praise.  The packaging is cool too because when they are all laid out card-to-card the package art makes a montage mural.

The ZIRA Ape-O-Naut packaging is disappointing, though.  They put the helmet on her head before they seal the card.  For all we know she has no head at all!  I bet it's a plot to sell more figures because hard-core fans will buy twice as many just to bust open the package and pull the helmet off!

I posted the Lego-style KUBRICK's too <http://apemania.com/MEDICOM.htm> these are very cool as well.

Keep us posted as to any news of the release dates for the next batch.  You seem to be in-the-know, and I for one ape-preciate the efforts!

Well, I fully agree with Jeff.
The only reason I posted these scoops on my site along with the makeups is because I figured that if these images are on the internet. These images would be best displayed on a POTA fan site like mine, Terry's or Brian's than someone elses site just trying to get hits off of their money making advertisement banners.

If the cats out of the bag, then the best we can do is promote the film as any POTA fan would. For what other choice do we as fan have? If they don't see them on our sites, there going to see them on someone elses.

I agree Alex. If it's out there we're only screwing ourselves by ignoring it. I'm talking about the decision to put it out there in the first place. And I'm not judging those who do that (sometimes I'm grateful) but for me, I can't. Maybe if Smith was an asshole, but he put his trust in me and that's really cool. But if photos get out there some other way than I'll feel free to share them and talk about the shoot, which is what it's supposed to be, journalism not exploitation. - - - Jeff Krueger

        Hey Alex,

There are actually 21 of the 6" figures (that I know of). I forgot that
they did a limited run on a BROWN suit CORNELIUS with the first
editions. One CORNELIUS in each case (24) was BROWN.

I don't know if they have done any other limited runs, but the two fotos
I've seen of the CONQUEST CAESAR show two different heads, one is the
same as the BATTLE CAESAR head, the other is unique to the CONQUEST

I say ignore all these test shots. Compare the officially released gorilla (which was in last Sunday's LA Times and is now all over the net) to the ludicrous tests. Tests are not meant to be seen. They're interesting for an idea but it's folly to judge a movie by it. LA Times also had a shot of Wahlberg crawling in mud after his ship crashed, lending credence to that "official" synopsis.        - - - - Jeff Krueger

Thanks, Jeff. Admittedly, the swiss cheese I've got for a brain is

            with no air date.

I've got a bee in my bonnet over this because by all accounts 'The
Liberator' was ep 1.13 and 'Up Above' was ep 1.14, suggesting that

              Hey Mez,

It's worth a mention that many of the illustrations in the annuals
are by an un-credited John Bolton. A leading comic book artist. In
most cases they blow anything Marvel did out of the water. (Except
              for maybe Mike Ploogs' stuff)

The content is appalling, juvenile, trash but John Bolton's work rocks.

              Yeah,
I was bummed when I first opened my package containing the Astro-Zira
and found they had placed the helmet on hiding the detail (yeah, I COULD
open it, but I ain't). What they should have done (in my humble opinion)
is package the three Astro-apes together in a gift set. It's fair to
assume that the fans would be buying them all anyhow and that would have
been a must have set. Especially if they were packaged in a window box
that was "de-MIB-able" like the Kubrick sets.
Interesting also to see the different prototypes for the Battle and

              .html Yes Dave,

I remember them VERY well.  The tv episodes with Roddy recreating his aged Galen as a host ran late-nite for a week on local tv station KTLA (Channel 5 in Los Angeles) in the late 70's/early 80's.  Like a tv horror host, Roddy (in the aged Galen mu) introduced each compiled tv movie every night from what looked like an old attic set, surrounded by all sorts of artifacts and goodies.  I do remember him (Galen) playing with a Mego astronaut doll during one of the clips.  The best thing about the whole week was the last night when host Galen concluded the festival by adding the commentary that his two human friends were eventually able to fix their spaceship and returned to their time.  So we finally had closure!!!

I also remember being very dissapointed in the make-up.  It looked (to me) like the hair was nothing more than crepe wool, so it was kind of cheezy.  As a kid, I remember feeling sorry for Roddy because it seemed to me that he must have needed money to do something so "beneath" his talent.  Show's how much I knew back then.  Roddy loved the apes and enjoyed playing the rolls.

I wouldn't mind seeing that footage again.  Has anyone ever tracked them down?

No no no... I meant his Character Peter Vincent(?) had been reduced

And if they have, how about getting it on the web! I'm dying to see this
footage myself. The really annoying thing is that these "movies" have been

just the two episodes stitched together.

I watched it too (same showing I guess) and I loved it. Fair enough, my
opinion is probably swayed by my inexplicable love of crap 80s horror films,

With regard to the "aged Galen" footage for the re-edited Tv movies, when we
were preparing the release of the TV series here, I was trying to track it down
to use as added value footage or bonus material ( plus I just wanted to see
it!). Nobody at out L.A. office was able to locate through their regular
channels. I even contacted Kevin Burn's office ( the guy who made Behind the
POTA) as his team did extensive research to create that program. The reply was
that they didn't uncover much on the TV series in the Fox archives. So maybe the
Network who aired the series owns it?

                 Yes Dave,

Has anyone ever tracked them down?

.html We all know that the series got sh*tcanned before it's time, and there are unfilmed tv scripts on eBay all the time.   I think it was ape-propriate that Roddy finish the story when he hosted that week-long run of the series for KTLA, even if it was just a commentary from old Dr. Galen.

There are certainly unfilmed scripts, but I really doubt any of them
involved the astronauts getting anywhere near to home. After all, even when
it was cancelled they wouldn't have any scripts beyond the end of the first
                  (whole) season, if even that.

I suspect they just saw it as an opportunity to give some closure on the
series. After languishing in limbo for a decade, Fox could just tack on a
"oh and by the way, they got home later" just to wrap it up and give the
                  series a conclusion (of sorts).

.html Actually, all of the costumes had their "glyphs" removed for BATTLE.  Most of the glyphs were kept by Western Costumes and when Fuller French bought the entire ape costume collection from Western in the early 90's, he got the boxes of glyphs in the deal. He made sure that they were paired up with the costumes once again before he sold them all off.

The only costumes that I have ever seen that never had the glyphs removed are Maurice Evan's original Zaius jacket (that one was only used in the first two films and then went into a private collection until it came our way last year) and Zaius' riding jacket from BENEATH, also still is intact.

You know it's very interesting to see how when Cameron wanted to do Planet of the Apes, he wanted to continue the film following BATTLE. And when one sees how this new remake comes down to a battle between ape and human according to the Fox exclusive and their logo (RULE THE PLANET). One can see that such a sequal to BATTLE could have been made. (with a few minor changes of course)

But I am glad that Fox did go the direction of a totaly new remake. Simply because of the fact that if one would have to see all five films to completely understand the remake, it could cause Fox to have a major bomb at the box office.

A very smart more by Fox to have a totaly new remake.
                  How interesting.

The list is based on commercials outside of fox. For there are no fox commercials listed.

There maybe just a glimer of hope for POTA.
If anyone is going to record this event I would sugest to start recording with the  pre-game show.

Hey Bob, the Memphis Film Festival is scheduled August 1-4. It seems
like it's going to have a distinct POTA slant. Linda Harrison, Kim Hunter,
Wright King(the corrupt surgeon named Galen) & William Windom are scheduled
to appear. The website is http://zeus.ia.net/%7Emarydee/memphis/ I e-mailed
the organizer, he says POTA will be shown. Check it out, John

                  .html
.htmlHello, my name is Rory Monteith and I'm new to this group.  'Planet of the
Apes' has been my favorite film since I first saw it in '68.  I have a
question about one of it's cast and wonder if anyone out there might know the
answer.  Whatever became of Robert Gunner who played Landon in the movie?  I
know that he appeared in 'Our Man Flint' as Agent 008, and in 'Caprice', and
co-starred with Vincent Price in 'The Jackals', but after 'POTA' he just
disappeared.  Anyone know what happened to him?

                  .html
.htmlEveryone seems to want to know when we'll see the first trailer for the new
POTA movie.  Who knows?   However, since Fox is releasing a movie called
'Monkeybone' at the end of February, I suspect we may get some sort of teaser
then.  Makes sense to me.  I wonder if it makes sense to anyone at Fox?

Well not only will they have this great ape festival but no doubt there's going to be a lot of dealers selling POTA stuff. Stuff like "T.V. episode lost footage" as the one you all are speaking of.

I was at a sci-fi convention a while back, the same I was talking to you about Lynne. And there was quite a few T.V. episodes for sale. But because I have them all as most of us do. I never did bother to check for that lost episode. Truth is I never even knew about until now. I may have seen it years ago, but it's been too long to remember. Although that cheezy description does ring a slight bell in some way. I think your best bet is to scope out the sci-fi conventions as well as this Memphis Festival.

For some one has to have it.

Brian did you ever ask your friend about that episode?

I just hope they don't release the comic book before the film as they did with Phantom Menace. Although in the case of Phantom Menace the comic book was better than the movie.

Does anyone know how to contact Christopher Sausville?  He is the author of "Planet of the Apes Collectibles" published by Schiffer books.  He is a rather advanced collector and I believe he may be of some assistance to me in locating some Items for my collection. The phone number listed inside the front cover of the guide has been disconnected,  no doubt due to an influx of calls after the release of the guide.  If anyone knows his E-Mail address,  that is good enough for me.   Thank you,  Bob.

                  .html
Excerpt from an interview with Helena Bonham Carter in the FilmFour
                  (UK TV) Guide for February:

Q.: And now you're an ape princess in Tim Burton's Planet of the
                  Apes...
HBC: "I'm not actually an ape princess anymore -- they demoted me.
I'm not even allowed to keep the crown. But it's great to be an ape
anyway -- it's very liberating. You could get away with murder,
literally do anything 'cos no-one knows who you are -- you could be
anyone under there. It's tempting to go off and rob a bank or
something. You spend so much time in make-up that you start to think
                  about these things."

Q.: And it's been a good experience, despite the endless hours under
                  rubber?
HBC: "It's been fantastic. The other night I was having fireballs
thrown at me. I was in the water as a drowning chimp and then Tim
says, 'OK, we're gonna throw fireballs at you now!' So it's stuff
like that. And Tim just has this mad energy -- hair and limbs flying
everywhere. And we've had to go to Ape School so we could learn how
to walk and talk like a chimp [Helena makes eerily convincing chimp
noises]. It's hilarious, sitting about on set watching little groups
of extras walk past practicing their ape-walk and knowing they're on
their way back from school. It could have been a nightmare but it's
been so much fun, like being in another world really."

                  That face is almost too pretty to cover up. But she has great eyes;
ought to make a smashing chimp, royalty or not. /Mez

Since you are an ape memorabilia afficiando (sp?) , would you like to submit articles to Apemania's "Ye Old Toys and Goodies" pages like Chris has done?

Bob,I've gotta say, I am a very serious collector and I though Chris Sausville's book missed some very interesting items that I either own or have owned or know of.  Chris also paid a bit too much attention to t-shirts (full pages given to crappy, unauthorised designs!).  I was pleased to see such a book but I really thought it could have easily been much, much better without too much effort. The very best source for collectors is eBay.  If you are not aware of eBay, let me know and I'll get you started! Michael

Thank you,  Bob.

                    .html
.html Hey Gang,  Here it is, straight from the horse's mouth!

I received a letter from a Mr. Yoshiyuki Tani of the Medicom Toy Corporation today and he stated that the reason we are not seeing a flood of their 6" Planet of the Apes and Kubrick figures here in the USA or the UK is because their licensing restrictions with FOX prohibit them selling/exporting outside of Japan. BUMMER!!! We here at Apemania know his pain and sympathize with him, because we have similar restrictions on our licensing agreements with Fox as well.

So it looks like we're stuck with eBay or the occassional dealer that makes the hop over to Japan for purchases.

I've enclosed a list here for MEDICOM dealers that have made extra efforts for me in the past.  They'd all love your business, so drop them a line, and  tell them Brian from APEMANIA.COM sent yah!!

If those links come up empty handed LordTZero, as most do because of the HOT demand for these medicoms. There is a Zira Astronaut Medicom being sold by Justbetoys.com on e-bay. Auction ends in about 5 hours, there's also a Nova figure as well. (got those coming to me soon)

How about a moment of silence?  If it wasn't for him, what would we be
                    obsessed with?

                    Best wishes,
                    Rory Monteith
That sounds like a winner too me.
                    Cool.

                    Best,

                    Alex
