Hey Gang,
I can vouch for Julian. He does deliver, albeit a little slow
at times, but he does deliver.

Thanks for that confirmation Brian.
Those medicoms look great! I just received Nova
with Zira Astronaut now on the way. Felix screwed up on shippment but all has
been cleared, nice guy by the way. And I see what you mean about not wanting
to open the packages. These things are so cool. Although I think the current
releases are the better detailed ones. From Nova, Zira Astro,
Taylor, Caesar and so on.

Dude, I think the reason why he can PRE-SELL them is
because he lives in HONG KONG.
And they do release them there before dealers in
america can get their little ape hands on them :o)

| Subject: Collectibles Article Part One - Model Kits, Busts & Statues. |
.html
.html
Brian
I am
considering writing an article on Planet of the Apes collectibles in parts
beginning with models/statues/busts.
I have
all the Addar kits, Addar Bottle scenes, Polar Lights re-releases (I am looking
for scans of the promotional posters for these if anyone has them - Alex, how
about that eBay CD?). I have some original ads from the Curtis Magazines,
but anyone with any othere promo stuff or ads please let me know!!! I also
have the Spaceship (ANSA) model kit.
Apemania makes costumes (of course I'll be wanting to cover them in the
future), masks (ditto) and figural busts/statues (including a doorknocker and
that kick ass Santa). Am I forgetting anything?
Can
you provide me with links to all (even - and PARTICULARLY - for those no longer
for sale) the figural busts/statues and doorknocker/Santa plus anything I might
have missed with a story if applicable and prices, availability (again even for
those no longer for sale to give the reader an idea of what they DID
cost).
Could
the rest of the group try to help me by compiling a list/links of other POTA
knock offs/garage kits/ models in this category I may have missed (the Icarrus
spring to mind and I know there are many statues around, official and otherwise,
including the Cornelius in thinker pose).
The
final product is destined to be published in Simian Scrolls, the Planet of the
Apes UK Fanzine, and I want this article to cover EVERYTHING, unlike the other
attempts that have been published.
As I
cover each specific category I will send out to the group for more
information.
Michael (from Down Under - where they release the TV Series on
video!!).

but anyone with any othere promo stuff or ads please let me know!!! I also
have the Spaceship (ANSA) model kit.
Michael (from Down Under - where they release the TV Series on
video!!).

Michael
I guess so, If I
do get them I'll be sure to let you know.
Send me your

sent me.
I'll also include the POTA videos I
made.
Which reminds me I'll be sending Kurt my
POTA videos as well.
With the new trailer I've just made on the
remake that come out to about 7 of them I believe. 5 original music
videos and 2 remake trailers. Sorry Terry and Dave, the second remake
trailer was made after I sent you guys the CD.
If anyone wants this as well just e-mail me your

Cool. Glad to know that the DEALER list is working for people.
Anyone else with success or horror stories with MEDICOM dealers?
One of the Aussie dealers told me that the only way that they were
getting the figures was by getting the overstock from stores in Japan.
The figures that don't sell get offered up to the foreign buyers, only
after interest has weaned in the Japanese market.

Thanks for that confirmation Brian.
Those medicoms look great! I just received
Nova with Zira Astronaut now on the way. Felix screwed up on shippment

Yeah, we call it home.
We do have a few hidden "workshop photos" posted as "treats" for
those fans daring enough to find their way around on the site. Just
like one of the group found the Under Construction arts a few weeks ago.
We are building workshop pages as we speak though. Along with
everything else.

Jee-Wizz!!! Hang on a moment folks! How do WE know
that they will release certain characters first? Does any of us (present
company excluded) have direct connections with Medicom? Or are we
just guessing which ones will be next?
Several of my sources have already purchased the Taylor Astronaut,
Caesar, and Caesar's Land (Conquest) gorilla figures as well as the 2 rare
versions (one per box). Mine are en-route to me as we speak.
I think we should all just settle down a bit before we start attacking
the very vendors to whom we seek help in obtaining these treasures.
If they say they have certain figures, give them the benefit of
the doubt before you start casting stones. Pick up the phone and
call them. E-mail them. Knock on their doors! But don't
condemn them because you heard from someone somewhere that a different
figure will be released before another.
Please remember that MEDICOM told me directly that they do not distribute
to markets outside of Japan. Therefore these dealers either make
the hop over there themselves or have buyers in Japan that purchase what's
left when they hit the stores. Many of the more popular items will
sell out first, leaving the overseas vendors to scrounge for the scraps.
So keep your shirts on, will you, and contact the dealers for comment
if you are in doubt. Besides, before you know it, ALL of the figures
will be ALL over bay, with no-one bidding on them at all. (look at
what's going on with the first series figures now. It's pretty darn
quiet.)
I'm just saying, stop all the speculation and accusations before
you have all of the facts, from the real sources.
Enough.

Anyone want to suggest various ways one could categorise collectibles?
I guess you could go by company, but that really is not how I want to go - I
would rather go with major headings and sub-headings. Eg:
FIGURAL:
(1) Model Kits - Official;
- Knock off;
(2) Busts;
(3) Statues;
(4) Full size Mannequins;
(5) Ahi;
(6) Hasbro;
(7) Commonwealth Toy and Noveltty Co;
(8) Mego;
(9) Medicom;
(10) A Bathing Ape;
(11) Apemania
MASKS:
(1) Don Post;
(2) Apemania;
(3) Prosthetics and Make Up Kits
PAPER GOODS:
(1) Comics;
(2) Novels;
(3) Publications;
(4) Posters;
(5) Related Magazines;
(6) Lobby Cards;
(7) Promotional Newspapers.
All suggestions well received
Michael

Not quite sure, Ken. Probably just that. I believe they
are variations of Caesar and The Conquest gorilla, but I do not know what
the differences are. I do know that the shops in Japan that are getting
them are charging double for them as soon as they come out of the crates.
So if you see them on eBay for inflated prices, you'll know why.
I should have mine in a few days so I'll let everyone know then.

Several of my sources
have already purchased the Taylor Astronaut, Caesar, and Caesar's Land
(Conquest) gorilla figures as
well as the 2 rare
versions (one per box). Mine are en-route to me as we speak.
I think we should all
just settle down a bit before we start attacking the very vendors to whom
we seek help in obtaining these
treasures.
If they say they have
certain figures, give them the benefit of the doubt before you start casting
stones. Pick up the phone and
call them. E-mail
them. Knock on their doors! But don't condemn them because
you heard from someone somewhere that a
different figure will
be released before another.
Please remember that
MEDICOM told me directly that they do not distribute to markets outside
of Japan. Therefore these
dealers either make
the hop over there themselves or have buyers in Japan that purchase what's
left when they hit the stores.
Many of the more popular
items will sell out first, leaving the overseas vendors to scrounge for
the scraps.
So keep your shirts
on, will you, and contact the dealers for comment if you are in doubt.
Besides, before you know it, ALL of
the figures will be
ALL over bay, with no-one bidding on them at all. (look at what's
going on with the first series figures
now. It's pretty
darn quiet.)
I'm just saying, stop
all the speculation and accusations before you have all of the facts, from
the real sources.
Enough.

I
think it was before your time Alex but some time Brian used to keep the group
up to speed with new Apemania releases. There was a particularly
outspoken member of the group who believed Brian was promoting his
capitalistic ways and Brian went a bit quiet after that. I'm kinda
hoping we can go back to hearing from Brian about new stuff
again......
Well, I've been on the e-group since '98 and
I don't recall that.
But I'm all for it, I mean that's what the group
is all about.
Monkey Talk and updates. I mean Ape Talk.

Thanx for clearing that up. E-mail can be so misleading at

Wow, Mike! I wasn't aware that folks
even remembered those days. I do remember that prior to me sharing
new releases with the group, weeks would go by with no activity at ALL!
That whole "burn the Brian" campaign by Rosenthal, was kinda fun and funny,
in a childish way. What ever happened to old Sam? Did he break
his neck in a mosh pit or something?
I'd also like to make a request of the webgroup
members: How about an introduction message from everyone again?
I'll start: "Hi, I'm Brian Penikas,
Keeper of the Glue and Faith for APEMANIA and Creative Director for Make-up
& Monsters Studios. When we (my crew and I) aren't dressing up
as our favorite POTA characters, we make our livings by creating make-up
effects for maybe some of your favorite films . Check out my Apemania profile
and the ol' resume if you're enclined to know more <http://apemania.com/cast/brian.htm>
Well, if the majority of the group would like
me to let them know about new Apemania releases or events, I'll keep them
coming.
News of the day:
-
Apemania (the troupe) is planning to do several
conventions prior to the release of the new film. The first one we are
gearing up for will be in Las Vegas sometime in APe-ril, how ape-propos
(apropos)?!
-
FOX INTERACTIVE will also be releasing the POTA
Interactive game in the spring, and there has been talk about a three city
promotional tour with Apemania in NYC, Chicago, and LA.
-
Vendors have added more collectibles to the Ape
City Thrift shop pages, one that just might cap your day! <http://www.apemania.com/Thrift.htm>
-
We are always looking for fan contributions to
our Junior G-Man <http://apemania.com/gman.htm> and Arts & Crafts
pages <http://apemania.com/ARTS.htm> So com'on folks, show your
stuff!!!
-
We just finished a Conquest display (lifesize)
<http://apemania.com/DISPLAYS/MANNEQUINS/CONQUEST.htm> and are currently
working on a restoration and fullsize display of Maurice Evans' original
Dr. Zaius outfit.
-
We also just finished the first Casaer Economy
Bust <http://apemania.com/DISPLAYS/BUSTS.htm>
-
The Nova and Cornelius resin kits are still on
the carving blocks, as is a really fabulous General Ursus. It's doubtful
we will see any of these before summer though. <http://apemania.com/RESIN_KITS.htm>
-
The long awaited Dr. Zira Economy Mask will debut
soon, fun for you and the little woman, aye LordTZer0? The big delay on
that is Zira's hairstyle and figuring a way to make them affordable.
-
And of course, Workshop foto pages galore!
I'm sure I've forgotten a bushell of things, but
I hope this'll do for starters.
Have a great day folks! GO APE!!!

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Larry Montgomery and I have
been a POTA fan ever since I first saw the movie at a drive in back in 1967
with my Mom and Dad. The only part that I really remember was the landing
sequence the scarecrows and the opening scenes of the Gorillas on horseback.
I can remember my Mom saying "oh! I think I saw one!" right before the
full face shot.
I have still got my original coloring book with my scribbles in it and
several of the puzzle kits. I am kind of quirky in the fact that my main
interests lie not so much in the "Ape" society, but from Mankinds downfall
and how a misanthrope ends up defending all of humanity. I also especially
dig how society ended up (I suppose a parallel future) in 1991.
Anyway, I really enjoy the emails which come back and forth and it seems

Dave Ballard from London re-introducing myself...
Married to Caroline with a 7 year old boy, Christopher. I've been a
fan ever since seeing Beneath on it's original release (You do the
maths!) I'm always happy to hear the latest news and learn of any new
items for sale "It's better to have it and not need it,
than need it and not have it" As the wise Monkey once said.
I have to admit I get pretty green when I see the prices those of you
in the USA can get stuff for. Whatever you're paying, even in your
worst nightmares, double it and you get the UK price!
Generally speaking this e-group is "the bollocks" (A bit of London
talk thrown in there... anyone notice?) Things can often get a bit
negative though. We're all fans, we should be sharing and getting
along, I'm not preaching, I'm as guilty as anyone but lets use this
re-introduction idea as a fresh start and try and keep things
positive from now on.
Since joining this group I've discovered that there are a lot of
great guys out there, fantastically generous people I've never even
met.
It's great to be a part of it all. <.html

Hi Larry. Welcome and thanx for sharing, especially about your
mom's comment!
My first memory of POTA's? I was 3 years old coming out of
the grocery store with my Mother in Cuccamunga, California. Being
so low to the ground at that age, parking lots were always a treasure trove
of goodies and adventure, so my eyes were always searching for stuff.
When we got to the car that day, I looked down and noticed a photograph
on the ground. I didn't touch it because what I saw scared me nearly
to death! A man in a cage with a blonde haired ape WEARING CLOTHES
looking in at him. I was so scared of the fact that someone
had lost that photograph , they were probably looking for it, the
cage-place must've been near my house, and "they" knew I had seen the photo!
My mother couldn't figure out why I was so quiet the rest of the day.
I never told her about the photo of the monkey and the man in the cage,
because I thought they'd come and get her too!
Such was my terrifying introduction to bubble-gum cards. Heck,
at 3 years of age, every foto is REAL!!!

I have a question regarding the "Sacred Scrolls"...
Does anyone know where there is a set of them? I think it would be
interesting. Or how far they were taken.
Nice to hear from you brian

My son who is 2 years of

I have a question regarding the "Sacred Scrolls"...
Does anyone know where there is a set of them? I think it would
be
interesting. Or how far they were taken.
Nice to hear from you brian

Wow, Mike! I wasn't aware that folks even

let them know about new Apemania releases or events, I'll keep them

- Apemania (the troupe) is planning to do several
conventions prior to the release of the new film. The first one we are
gearing up for will be in Las Vegas sometime in APe-ril, how ape-propos
(apropos)?!
- FOX INTERACTIVE will also be releasing the POTA
Interactive game in the spring, and there has been talk about a three city
promotional tour with Apemania in NYC, Chicago, and LA.
- Vendors have added more collectibles to the Ape
City Thrift shop pages, one that just might cap your day! <http://www.apemania.com/Thrift.htm>
- We are always looking for fan contributions to
our Junior G-Man <http://apemania.com/gman.htm> and
Arts & Crafts pages <http://apemania.com/ARTS.htm>
So com'on folks, show your stuff!!!
- We just finished a Conquest display (lifesize)
<http://apemania.com/DISPLAYS/MANNEQUINS/CONQUEST.htm>
and are currently working on a restoration and fullsize display of Maurice
Evans' original Dr. Zaius outfit.
- We also just finished the first Casaer Economy
Bust <http://apemania.com/DISPLAYS/BUSTS.htm>
- The Nova and Cornelius resin kits are still on
the carving blocks, as is a really fabulous General Ursus. It's
doubtful we will see any of these before summer though. <http://apemania.com/RESIN_KITS.htm>
- The long awaited Dr. Zira Economy Mask will debut
soon, fun for you and the little woman, aye LordTZer0? The big delay on that
is Zira's hairstyle and figuring a way to make them affordable.
- And of course, Workshop foto pages
galore!
I'm sure I've forgotten a
bushell of things, but I hope this'll do for starters.
Have a great day folks! GO
APE!!!

Boy I feel like I'm in the first day of
School.
I'm Alexander Ruiz runner of www.prophecysite.com and a huge apes fan.
Born in Cuba in June '66, and got the hell out 3 months later
hehehe!!
Saw Beneath when I was between 7 and 8 on television
for the first time and totaly blew me away. Ever since then I've been
a POTA fan, although I'm not much of a collector, I do like POTA action figures,
Comics, and rare footage. My interest has been more towards the POTA movies
than the merchandise or T.V. stuff. And that is why you see that my
site is based more towards the movies then anything else.
Not married, almost was, but I was able to
escape that prison for now. hehehe!!! Didn't work out, for some reason or other she didn't want to dress up
as Zira while we made love.... I just don't
understand it. :o)
I live in Hialeah Florida, for most of you who don't know
where that is, It's a small city just off the boarder of Miami.
Cool place to live, Worst place to live, as is all places. The grass is always
greener on the other side, as they say.
Looking foward to the remake, as most of you know.
:o)
And will be posting updates on the movie and the site as
time goes along. I'm glad you guys liked the Music CD, get ready for the
Tribute to the Planet of the Apes Part II Music CD, covering the new remake,
original T.V. episoodes and Cartoon episodes. The next CD I'll have on the site
sometime next month following the the release of the official remake
trailer.
Love the past guys, don't ever get me wrong, but I look
foward to the remake and future of APES!
Bring on the APES!
And lets get this PLANET OF THE APES REVIVAL
STARTED!
So step aside Star Wars, it's our time now.
Damn, pinch me I dreaming!
This is going to be great!
Best guys/gals.

Love MY job? God, I would gladly give it all up
for a normal life!!! You know, adoring wife waiting at home with
open arms, white picket fences, screaming kids, barking dogs, cats fighting
at wee morning hours, metal detectors and drug addictions at elementary
schools, teen pregnancy, 45% tax brackets...eh, you know what?
I think I'll keep my dumb job. :-/

gearing up for will be in Las Vegas sometime in APe-ril, how ape-propos
(apropos)?!
-
FOX INTERACTIVE will also be releasing the POTA
Interactive game in the spring, and there has been talk about a three city
promotional tour with Apemania in NYC, Chicago, and LA.
-
Vendors have added more collectibles to the Ape
City Thrift shop pages, one that just might cap your day! <http://www.apemania.com/Thrift.htm>
-
We are always looking for fan contributions to
our Junior G-Man <http://apemania.com/gman.htm>
and Arts & Crafts pages <http://apemania.com/ARTS.htm>
So com'on folks, show your stuff!!!
-
We just finished a Conquest display (lifesize)
<http://apemania.com/DISPLAYS/MANNEQUINS/CONQUEST.htm>
and are currently working on a restoration and fullsize display of Maurice
Evans' original Dr. Zaius outfit.
-
We also just finished the first Casaer Economy
GO APE!!!

.html Hello again everyone. This is John from Long Island(somewhere in the
Forbidden Zone). I first saw POTA when it was rereleased on a double-bill
(remember those?)with Battle. They showed Battle first, then POTA.
Omega-Alpha. I was totally blown away. I thought Battle was ok, but POTA was
like nothing I had ever seen before. Kind of saw the series in a roundabout
way. I never saw Beneath on it's initial release. My first POTA flick was
Escape, then Conquest, Battle and POTA. I was really fascinated by the
makeup, of course. But then when I saw Nova in the cornfield....let's say she
added a new dimension to my POTA interest. For years I thought I was the only
POTA fan in the world. But then, thanks to Silicon Valley, I got hooked up to
the net and found out that was far from the truth. I really enjoy being a
part of this group. I find all of your posting to be interesting, insightful
and funny. And although people can get testy from time to time, hey, that's
life. Nothin' personal. And I'm really glad that we have this sounding board
what with the reimagining coming out. Gotta go for now, see/read you all
later, John <.html

Hey Alex -
Just delurking a moment to say a big "yer welcome"
for that picture disk again. My computer went off to the doctor
just after my last note down your way and just returned a couple of
days back.
Anyhow, I'm still spinning your MP3 disk pretty loudly
every time the wife goes out.
I'd noticed a few months back that all
those cool black & whites of the Icarus ship had gone from that site
(one Saturday morning, when I went back looking for more - natch :-)
) Glad to hear you're thinking of putting some from that disk on
the prophecysite.
As for that cool Escape script... I don't have
the Marvel magazines anymore (sigh....) but as I recall the adaptation,
I think it followed this version pretty closely.
catch ya
later Kurt
Thanks again Kurt.
I'll be finishing the original section this week
(fingers crossed) and I'll have the Icarus pics posted as well. I have Escape,
Conquest and Battle to complete on some sections. I have an extra copy on
that Escape issue you spoke of so I'll send it to you along with the music
video cd. (I just never saw that cut version in movie script form
before)
I once bought the whole POTA lot of 29 issues on
e-bay, so the ones I originaly purchased as a young chimp in the
'70s are still stored away. I think they come out to about 12 or 13
repeated issues I have now. (Sorry Terry but I got the whole 29
issues really cheat that day on e-bay)
I know someone was asking for issue #6 on the
e-group but that's not one of my repeats, sorry, if it were I would have sent
him that as well.
Thanks again Kurt.
Best,
Alex <.html

definitely ebay is a place to find deals
sometimes
most dealers charge $290 for a set of the 29
magazines
but I have seen sets on ebay sell anywhere from $40
to 200
I base my own prices on the condition and supply
If anyone has extra issues of POTA mags,
paperbacks, or comics let me know cause I may just purchase them all from
you!!
I will pay the best dollar for:
POTA Magazine #18-29 (marvel)
Adventures On POTA #6-11 (marvel)

POTA Lord of the Apes #4 paperback from tv

I root for the chimps. I always felt they should be fighting the gorillas,
and orangutans instead of humans, but they are such hippy pacifists they
don't really fight anyone.
I've played in a lot of punk bands, of late I was Lord T Bag of The Caffiends

the back burner for now, as I'm studying film. I think Brian has a great
job. I suppose he's been hit up for work by every film person under the
foam, but Brian, if you ever need an extra hand, I'm there my friend.
Please excuse any ranting and raving I may have done in the past. As an Ape

much of the way those feelings are expressed is for dramtic or comic effect. <.html

Cheapest way to go T is free server. The only
problem is that you would have to put up with their advertisment banners. (I
personaly can't stand them, and also I can't have a free server because I
deal in multimedia, and you do need a great deal of hard drive space and
bandwidth space to run such a site)But it is the cheapest way to
go.
I have about 500 megs of space, with about 300 megs
held just for the remake stuff soon to be coming out. But if you
want to pay, you maybe able to get something as cheap as $15.00 a month for
about 30 megs or so. Just go to your favorite search engine and type
out "free server" or "web hosting".
As for creating a site, just go to your local
software store and pick up the best page maker you can find or afford.
There all quite simple to use, the hardest part is being creative. For what
you will create is waht you will display on the web. But you will find that
with time practice you will get better at it.
Best,
Alex

.html .htmlHey Everyone,
On February 8th, 1968 "Planet of the Apes" had its World Premiere at the
Capital Theatre in New York City. So today, Feb. 8th 2001, is its 33rd
Anniversary. (By the way, "2001: A Space Odyssey" had its world premiere in
the same theatre on April 3, 1968)
My name is Rory. I was eight years old in 1968 and living on Long Island. I
can vividly recall coming home from school one day and watching on TV this
strange commercial for a new movie. It showed first three astronauts
trekking across a wasteland, then suddenly this gorilla appeared (the Hunt
Leader). My eyes widened and my jaw dropped. "What is this!" I had to run
out and tell my friends all about this commercial I had just seen. In April,
after "Planet" had finished its run in NYC and had opened wide, I finally saw
this movie that was already an obsession with me. I can remember thinking
during the movie that since I saw Charlton Heston go to sleep in the
beginning, he'd probably wake up at the end and discover it was all a dream.
For that reason the ending came as a tremendous shock to me and I remember
leaving the theatre numb and almost unable to speak. On other movie has ever
had the impact of "Planet of the Apes" for me. This is one reason why I
doubt I'll like the new movie no matter how good it is. I only hope it's a
hit so it focuses new attention on the original.
Hey, does anyone out there know the date "Planet of the Apes" opened in Los
Angeles in 1968?
Thanks.<.html <.html

I'm Terry Hoknes, president of the POTA International Fan
Club
and overall huge apes fan. Born in Saskatchewan,
Canada in January 1971 where I still live.
First saw POTA on tv after school around 1977. Not
sure if it was the tv series of a film, either would be strange to see after
school in that year??
I also deal in collectibles, mainly print matter so I
collect and deal in POTA comics, magazines, fanzines, paperbacks,
books
Don't have the budget or room to collect the toys etc
though they are very cool!
I created the fan club after numerous letters of mine were
published in the POTA Adventure comics back in 1991. The fanzine and club
was started in December 1991. I moved it online in May 1998. We have
now had 35000 visitors to our site and the new movie is going to skyrocket the
hits!
I am a songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist and am
releasing a new CD next month under the name "HOKNES". More on that
project at
I also am one of the biggest hit song/mp3 collectors in
the world with a collection of approx 25,000 songs and every hit song to break
the top 20 in the USA during the last 40 years!
The new POTA movie is going to be amazing and do wonders
in terms of giving the old POTA exposure.
Due to my age, I grew up a Star Wars fanatic but POTA
always interested me maybe due to the fact that the whole concept could be
studied and learned and wasn't overpopulated and exposed like SW and ST
are.
Our fan club publishes a fanzine called Ape
Chronicles. #37 is tentatively due this month. Due
to my busy lifestyle and traveling our publishing schedule is very sporadic but
they always eventually turn up.
I am always looking for submissions of reviews, artwork,
original stories, pictures, stories relating to POTA for our website and for our
fanzine.
Please send in your bio! <.html <.html

No, I should make one when I find the time. Though I'm not sure the group
would be interested, as most of it isn't Apes related. Some are unique, like
a star card from inside a Danish cereal box in the 40s and a record from the
60s of her reading poems. By the way, if anyone has her Simon and Schuster
reading of The Velveteen Rabbit, I'm buying! Also videos of Storm Center,
You Came Along, Anything Can Happen or Betrayed. They are the holy grails
for Hunter hunters. <.html

Happy 33rd anniversary to "Planet
of the Apes" and it's fans. I'm Jeff Krueger. My e-mails to this group are
sporadic since I don't currently have a computer but can use one when I visit my
folks.
I remember seeing a TV commercial
for an "Apes" movie (maybe "Battle") and was taken with the makeup. Later, my
babysitter tuned in "Escape", perhaps it's TV premiere. I don't remember what I
was doing but I came in when they're towing the ship out of the water. When the
apes took off their helmets a jolt went through my body: there's that makeup
again! I loved the movie but unfortunately I fell asleep. When I learned how it
ended (the apes being killed but their baby switched) I was pissed I missed it!
I also recall not really believing that account, movies don't end that way. But
it stayed in my mind and eventually the TV series began, a weekly dosage that
got me hooked. Of course that was also the era of the merchandising and
Birthday/Christmas '74 had a particularly simian bent. Just as quickly, it was
gone. The show was cancelled, the toys broke, the trash can dented and "Jaws"
grabbed my attention. I enjoyed watching "Apes" when it turned up on Tv but
otherwise it just became a memory. A very vivid memory, though, because I've
always connected to "Apes" in a personal way. Alot of my own interests and
concerns are covered in it, from my distaste for religious and political dogma
to my affinity for animals to my interest in storytelling and movie making, and
everything in between. For a long time, "Apes" seemed gone but not
forgotten.
Slowly it came back. In '82 I found
a copy of Boulle's book and soon after some of the novelizations in used book
stores. In '85 I started collecting Marvel's "Apes" magazines (which I didn't
know about as a kid). But in a way I got back "into" it because of Mr. Tim
Burton. A friend of mine was into Batman, collecting the comic books. In '88
Batfans were awaiting Burton's latest opus, not unlike the interest in Burton's
current film by a segment of the population. Anyway, my friend started dragging
me to sci-fi conventions. I remember standing next to "Batman" creator Bob Kane
as a convention previewed the film, I think it was the trailer. Fans were
thrilled that they got Jack Nicolson. Meanwhile, at these conventions I started
collecting the "Apes" trading cards, some posters, and a hardcover of Boulle's
book. Nothing extravagent, but it was cool to have these physical
representations of something that I so connected with. Also, my friend took me
to a video store that had "Apes" videos, so I copied them ("Apes" videos were
like $60 back then, and didn't want the bastardized version shown on commercial
TV). Having "Apes" on video seemed like a major victory.
OK, around that time (late '80's) I
first heard about a new "Apes" movie was in the works. In 1990 the Adventure
comics appeared, a big turning point (new stories!). And through the comics I
learned of Terry Hoknes' plans for a fan club. During the '90's I researched
alot of stuff for articles I hope to finally get out this year; this research
deepened my respect for the themes and issues in the films. Through the club I
also met people like Eric Greene and Scott Essman. I helped Eric do book
signings when his book came out in '96, through which I became friends with
people like Booth Colman, Buck Kartalian and Bill Blake. Bill actually made a
monkey out of me for one signing. Essman invited me to his John Chambers tribute
in '97, and asked me to design John's birthday cake for a '98 tribute. I've
visited John since (most memorably with Bill Blake and Natalie Trundy). Also in
'98 I got the opportunity to go to the 30th Anniversary party, where I met
Natalie Trundy and we've since become good friends. Meanwhile, during all this
"Apes" came back in a big way , with filmmakers like Oliver Stone, James Cameron
and Tim Burton (all cinematic heroes of mine) involved with a new moviek, a
fantastic (2 HOUR!) documentary, etc. etc. etc. For over a decade now I've been
involved with "Apes" as a hobby and each year just seems to get better and
better.
Most incredible are the friends
I've made, from celebrities to collectors to people who just plain love life and
see "Apes" as an expression of this. And now this e-group which is a continuing
source of fun and fascination. What a ride it's been!
Anyway, that's me. A condensed
version of this e-mail is available from Reader's Digest.

Cheapest way to go T is free server. The only
problem is that you would have to put up with their advertisment banners. (I
personaly can't stand them, and also I can't have a free server because
I deal in multimedia, and you do need a great deal of hard drive space and
bandwidth space to run such a site)But it is the cheapest way to
go.
I have about 500 megs of space, with about 300
megs held just for the remake stuff soon to be coming out. But if
you want to pay, you maybe able to get something as cheap as $15.00 a month
for about 30 megs or so. Just go to your favorite search engine
and type out "free server" or "web hosting".
As for creating a site, just go to your local
software store and pick up the best page maker you can find or afford.
There all quite simple to use, the hardest part is being creative. For what
you will create is waht you will display on the web. But you will find that
with time practice you will get better at it.

My own suspicion is that the first
"Apes" trailer will arrive with Fox's "Monkey Bone". This is cool because it's
directed by Henry Selick, who went to school with Burton and dicted "Nightmare
Before Christmas" and "James and the Giant Peach" for him. I reckon the trailer
might be previewed on the show "Access Hollywood" (Fox owned) like "X-Men" was
last year. - - - Jeff Krueger

You certainly have led a charmed ape life. I too had loads of ape stuff as a
kid. Most was lost in the mists of time, but a lot has been replaced at
great expense. If I had know it was going to appreciate I would have taken
better care of it. I checked the book out of the library and looked up every
article written. I bought the novels and masks, anything else I could get my
hands on. Before they had foam kits I was sculpting appliances in clay and
coating them in latex. Making hair goods out of fake fur and blending my own
hair in one strand at a time. My folks got me some publicity stills from Fox
of Beneath of which my fave was the one where Zira examines Brent and Nova.
I was fascinated the way Kim Hunter could project her through the make up,
and I would spot those expressive eyes and soothing voice on TV in other
films and shows. The first time without even knowing what she looked like.
Several years ago, thanks to the Internet, I found out she had written Loose
In The Kitchen. Had I know before I have bought it when it was first
published. I started to contact her shortly after reading that. What kind
of fan am I? I asked myself . . . All I have are a few Ape pictures. So,
again thanks to the Internet, I began collecting everything I could get!
Now, I dare say, I have one of, if not the, best collection of Kim Hunter
memorabilia around! Though much is not Apes related, of the ape stuff my
faves are the behind the scenes ones, where she's reading a book or having a
smoke. I just saw a couple of photos on eBay through Butterfields they were
asking top dollar for. I'm happy to say I've gotten better for less. Though
I paid more for the one of her lensing a shot in the camera of the Ape City
Coliseum. The originals will always have a special place in my heart. I'll
go see the new movie, maybe more than once. But it can't be better than the
originals -- Not for me! How could it be? No Zira...No Kim. <.html

I've heard descriptions from the set that Bonham-Carter looks like Kim
Hunter in makeup. But I'm sure that wouldn't sway you. Before they even
started filming, Kim said she wouldn't participate if asked. She's been the
most vocal opponent of the remake that I've heard. She also turned down a
request to be in the TV series. That's why I find it odd reports that she'll
do a convention when the movie comes out. As far as I know she doesn't do
conventions; her love is theatre.
But you couldn't ask for a sweeter lady. I met her at the 30th anniversary
thing and have written her the last few Christmases. She always writes back,
and I've heard from others she's good at fulfilling requests like autographs
and such. She's one of the all time favorites for "Ape" fans. - - - - Jeff

has a whole series of pages on his site with FANTASTIC photos that he

"What about Escape? They had the whole thing

Which brings us to another point, Is the ship in "Escape" the same as the
one in "Planet"? The hatch is in a different position and it doesn't
appear to be as big as the ship seen in "Planet". The "Escape" ship
certainly looks to be the same as the one used in the TV series pilot.

The difference is in the wee word "the".
"It's bollocks" = it's bad.
"It's the bollocks" = it's good.
I've noticed much the same with rappers - why exactly is something "sh*t"

hair or an affinity with tartan. And if we're using local dialect then I
would like to back Dave up and say that this group is indeed "the dug's

Born in 1977, I avoided apemania (the phenomenon, not the lovely make-up

I loved the Star Wars films and played with the toys, read the comics, etc.
However, unlike most of the other kids my age, I also had a love of old
dinosaur movies, particularly the kind that featured Doug McLure rescuing a
damsel in distress, watching all his friends being eaten by monsters and
then making it out while it falls down around him. This in turn led to me
being fixed to the TV every Saturday afternoon when ITV in Scotland showed a
series of films under the banner "Lost Worlds".
In retrospect, quite what "Battle For The Planet of the Apes" was doing in a
"lost world" series of films I don't know, but I'm glad it was there. I was
instantly hooked. The original was later shown as a late-night double bill
with Beneath, but I missed the ending of the first one (missed the ending of
the original and I still loved it!!). I saw Conquest a couple of times next,
and managed to get it and Battle on tape. Being just a young lad, it never
occurred to me to hunt for videos of the films, so I eagerly awaited them on

I got the original on tape (blown away by the ending despite having seen a
couple of sequels) then a few years later got "Beneath" on tape too - it was
the second last one I saw and I loved it immensely. It took a while, but I
eventually saw "Escape", which I don't like as much but still really enjoy.
In the early 90s, my interest in comics took me to the Adventure series (and
later to old Marvel mags) where I found out about Ape Chronicles, which in
turn tuned me in to PotA fandom. Saw the TV series shortly after, but sadly
have yet to see the cartoon series.
My love of the series has spiralled out of control ever since, and still

minute of it. I am also insanely jealous of Brian's job and Jeff's
hob-nobbing with the stars. Still, I hear some Scottish guy is writing a

You're right, it doesn't. I guess she looks like her except with eyebrows,
and without hazel eyes, and a different nose, and different hair. You know,
come to think of it ... She looks nothing like her.
Yeah, Kim was so uncomfortable with the make-up her doctor recommended a
sedative before sitting down in the make-up chair. The one time when she did
feel ready to face the day without help, her make-up man told her if she ever
tried that again she could find herself a new one. Even if she was all for a
remake, the best any director could hope for, is a voice over. <.html

Don't we all. You either get it or you don't. It's not something you can
explain to people. BTW, I made a supplemental post yesterday that has yet to
appear. Similar complaints have been made over at the Buckaroo Banzai group
as well as others. What is with Yahoo? <.html

.html Jeff certainly has led a charmed ape life. I too had loads of ape stuff as a
kid. Most was lost in the mists of time, but a lot has been replaced at
great expense. If I had know it was going to appreciate in value I would
have taken better care of it. I checked the book out of the library and
looked up every article written about POTA. I bought the novels, anything
else I could get my hands on. Before they had foam kits I was sculpting
appliances in clay and coating them in latex. My folks got me some publicity
stills from Fox of Beneath of which my fave was the one where Zira examines
Brent and Nova. I was fascinated the way Kim Hunter could project through
the make up, and I would spot those eyes and that voice on TV in other films
and shows. The first time without even knowing what she looked like, I knew
it was her.
Several years ago, thanks to the Internet, I found out she had written Loose
In The Kitchen. I started to contacting her shortly after reading that.
"What kind of fan am I?" I asked myself . . . All I have are a few pics from
Apes. So, again thanks to the Internet, I began collecting everything I
could get! Now, I dare say, I have one of, if not the, best collections of
Kim Hunter memorabilia. Though much isn't Apes related, of the ape stuff, my
faves are the behind the scenes ones, where she's reading a book or having a
smoke. The originals will always have a special place in my heart. Nothing
against the new movie, I'll go see it, maybe more than once. But it can't be
better than the originals -- Not for me. How could it be? No Zira...No Kim. <.html

Yeah tell me about it, I hate when a second post
appears before the first post.
And sometimes even longer than
that.
Crazy.

.html Hi,
I'm Mark and I'm part of the UK ape troop. Born '69, I must have seen the
series when I was a Kid, and probably the Films back then. Only joined the
group in 2000 I think, after a local station had an Apes weekend, showin the
first three films. I suppose I'm an odball fan, in that I have no
collectibles, and only possess two apes book. As for me, I live by myself,
and when I'm not working for the space industry, I write music (have it
performed in a few places too - its contemporary classical).
Some have noticed the philosophical tone to my posts; I find the inversion
of intelligence and the social satire endlessley fascinating. That's what
makes me an apes fan.
I still think the original makeup is the best.
Mark
P.S. I wrote a vaguely apes-related novel last year, as some might possibly
know. <.html

.htmlWell
Does anyone want to have a "Quicktime" version of the trailer sent to them
before it is released at the movies?
I thought so.
Go to:
http://www.foxmovies.com.au/home.asp
Then select "Coming Soon" and a window will appear......I'll let you see
what happens.
Thanks to Ken Taylor for the heads up!

I believe that Fox's Liscencing and Merchandising department have some
one who's job it is to check Ebay for such items and alert them if "stuff"
shows up.
Best,

the auction was pulled off of e-bay the first time. But

.html Terry
Thanks for the elaborate list! Believe it or not I have a few to add (the
UK Whitman Puzzles, a new gun that has appeared on eBay, Gorilla Glasses to
name a few) but I applaud you for your efforts!!!
I have just had a read of "Beneath the Simian Scrolls" and I see there as an
article on Model Kits by none other than our own Dave Ballard. I also have
a kit you missed Dave - an ANSA spaceship that is neither of those you show
(oh yeah I'm not sure if this one is on Terry's list too). I really like
your article Dave - can I scan it and set up a link for the group to read
it?
Since kits have been covered I'm going to go on to a different topic - toys.
Anyone have anything to contribute?
