Terry

Thanks for the elaborate list!  Believe it or not I have a few to add (the
UK Whitman Puzzles, a new gun that has appeared on eBay, Gorilla Glasses to
name a few) but I applaud you for your efforts!!!

I have just had a read of "Beneath the Simian Scrolls" and I see there as an
article on Model Kits by none other than our own Dave Ballard.  I also have
a kit you missed Dave - an ANSA spaceship that is neither of those you show
(oh yeah I'm not sure if this one is on Terry's list too).  I really like
your article Dave - can I scan it and set up a link for the group to read
it?

Since kits have been covered I'm going to go on to a different topic - toys.

Anyone have anything to contribute?

Michael

Hey kids,
For your info, I'm 37, married w/ an amazing 5 year old son ( Jake). We
live in Sydney , Australia and to use OUR local lingo:
"I reckon APES is Bonza!". Could be a slight exaggeration and I
apologize in advance for Crocodile Dundee 3.
I've been an APE fan since seeing Planet on TV in Feb. '75 as a
precursor to the TV series. I got into it right away, buying the Curtis
magazines and Mego dolls soon after. I met my best friend at school via
the TV series gum cards, swapping in the playground. I like the movies
in running order w/ Planet as my favourite etc.
These days I like to think I have a pretty comprehensive collection of
merchandise and have a few people to thank for helping me along the way.
You know who you are.
I now have a whole room dedicated to all things APE. You'd be amazed at
some of the absolute crap that was made back then that has a POTA
sticker slapped on it. There's a hand full of "high rollers" on Ebay who
push the prices up of anything remotely rare. As our Aussie dollar sucks
at the moment ( .55 cents to the US$) , I tend to let the others battle
it out.
I currently work at Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment but am
leaving on Feb 23rd after 16 years to pursue new ( yet to be determined)
challenges. I'm the Marketing Manager for Rental but got involved with
last year's TV series video releases.
No one else would have put in the time as we built the packaging from
scratch.
REALLY looking forward to the new film. I originally didn't want to
build any expectations so I wouldn't be disappointed.
So we''ll just have to see.
Even though I don't always contribute, I enjoy reading the group's
comments.
It's comforting to know that I'm not the only Ape fan.
Best,
KEN

Hey Ken, sounds super! No, your not the only Apes fan thats out there, but
I know how you feel. Since you work for 20th Century Fox, you wouldn't have
happened to have heard of what happened to the spaceship that was used in
the original POTA? I figure that it was probably cut up for scrap, but who
knows? Anyway welcome onboard.

Hey gang! I just got back from visiting family in Missouri and went to an
antique store there. I found 4 POTA books and record sets, one for each movie
but they didn't have a Conquest set and I don't think one was made. The
records aren't scratched and are like new but the books have some wear on the
covers but still look great. The inside pages are like new also. I paid $10
each for them. Does anyone know anything about these? They are like comic
books and I believe published by marvel. I remember having a few books like
these when I was a kid but I never had the POTA ones. (I had Spider-man,
Dracula, and Frankenstein I believe.) I would like to burn the records onto a
couple cd's but I need a record player and something to connect it to my
computer. I'd like to know if I got a good deal or not and how much they are
worth. Thanks!

Loc

P.S. At the same antique store's booth they had a POTA coloring book for $15.
I didn't get it since I didn't have enough money.

Hi Loc

I had these as a kid - they were available in most record stores. I
recently upgraded and bought a sealed set. They are not a particularly rare
item, but are official Planet of the Apes merchandise and therefore must be
had! You are right, a Conquest version was never made. A sealed set is a
lot harder to find but not much fun to examine (I still have the original
ones though thank goodness).

You will find a lot of the story content has been missed/modified in
comparison to the original movies. The audience is children and that is why
(and probably explains the absence of the Conquest version- too violent).

Same company made 3 "singles" containing stories from the TV Series and an
LP album containing these stories - but no graphic accompaniment.

There was also an LP album which compiled the 4 Movie adaptations (again
with no accompanying graphic books) - possibly another explanation as to why
no Conquest.

I would love to talk to an old exec from Power Records to get some answers
to these questions - anyone know where to start?

Michael

.html Hey Larry,

Phil Broad said that a stuntman bought the Icarus right before FOX sold the lot off to land developers.  I believe it's somewhere in AZ now, but that is only a rumor.  The miniature (which was molded and duped during a restoration) sits as a centerpiece in Bill Creeber's (the POTA Production Designer) birdbath at his home here in LA.

    Hey Mez...

I'm trying to catch up on all of my email....I haven't been there in about two weeks and they are getting testy!!!!

I just wanted to welcome you to the group!  Better late than never, I've always said!  And it is sooo good to have another McDowall fan on the list!!  There are a few of us!  Have you heard of the Musgrave List? Fantastic Roddy list...let me know .

I am also female...I'm not sure if I was the only one or not...seemed to be...and have been a POTA fan since I can remember..dating me, I know!  And I am very, very fond of the TV series!  Still am writing stories in that vein, even after all these years. I sure do miss it sometimes, and I am looking forward to the new movie, bad or good!  I'm just having Ape-attacks every time I get on the list!!

p.s.  It's all Pete's fault, huh?  Dropped you into it?  LOL! You sound like you are in the right place, after all!!  Have fun!

If anyone wants to go as a group, let me know..I think it would be a blast!

I'm hoping that Episode I was just a warm-up.  With the cool reception I think it was received with, maybe Mr. Lucas wil remember all of us that saw him through the first three and not treat us like...well, like we don't exist.  I didn't even feel like I belonged to the Universe anymore, and with all the books that keep coming out, (the ones I absolutely cannot ever hope to keep track of), I feel like more of an outsider!!  Anyone else have this problem?  I only hope that the new Apes film will remember us as well as pulling new people into it...that's the best!

                                                              *Lynne*

I feel the same way about the new star wars myself.
The reason why it's hard for me to enjoy the prequals is because these are liked to the originals, and it all seems too new and badly put together.
Apes on the other hand for me anyway is a totaly new story with no link what so ever to the original. So it's like a breath of fresh air without the fear of the original being damaged in any way.

Just my way of looking at it. Nothing to lose, everything to gain.

    Hello Gang

I am married with 2 wonderful girls (Natasha and Melissa). We live in the
    Capital City of Australia, Canberra.

I picked up a Curtis Planet of the Apes Magazine as a child (number 8) and I
was hooked after that. I would get very excited on finding new books and
toys. I also developed an interest in monkeys and apes in general
(particularly the Great Apes) and often enquired as to how I could get me a
pet chimp (which was possible in the US at the time but damned near
impossible in Australia). I am getting my revenge on my mum now - she threw
my ape collection all away when my enthusiasm momentarily lapsed and I
    discovered girls.

I recall I could only ever get the first release of Megos and I used to
dream about growing up and finding the other figures and the playsets. I
visited the US in 1983 and when I arrived in LA I picked up the TV guide and
saw there was a Planet of the Apes movie being screened that I had never
seen! How could this be? It turned out to be one of those re-packaged "2
TV shows back to back" but I tried damned hard to watch it. Jet lag won
that battle and I was so upset I missed half the show that I would compare
it to losing a lost one (well maybe a pet). At the time I was a passionate
collector of Pink Floyd and David Bowie.

My interest was rekindled in 1992 when I went into a local record (remember
them) store and saw the entire set of Apes movies was available on video FOR
THE FIRST TIME EVER IN AUSTRALIA. I took the day off work and watched them
all back to back, writing down on a note pad any inconsistencies in the
plots and attempting to explain them all with a script for a sixth movie
which explained EVERYTHING (thinking at the time that at least it may one
day be published as a story in a comic book - this was around the time of
the rebirth of Apes in Adventure Comics). By the way, the release of this
series was thanks to the immortal Mr Ken Taylor.....we salute you.

I then discovered the Internet and bought a lot of the dear old toys I had
previously owned at extraordinarily high prices. I took on the challenge to
start collecting Apes because I remembered as a child there was NOTHING
around - so how hard could it be? A few Megos and a few other toys -
EASY!!! Then I found eBay where I got in touch with a huge collector who
was selling his entire collection. I could not believe what was out there
and I am still discovering new, previously unknown toys all the time! Ken
Taylor and I love to compare notes on collectibles. His collection is
awesome - he needs a new house to set up as a museum. I would love to one
day set up a Planet of the Apes tribute hall (say at Fox Studios Australia?)
with full size Apemania Mannequins and accessories and a heap of
collectibles (dream on). I agree toys are to be played with, but there's
something wonderful about having them in hand in their original
wrapper...preserved for the ages (in suspended animation).

The release of the new movie marks a whole new era. I look at it as a
springboard. If it is a smash hit, Fox will release the Cartoon series and
I bet they may even be convinced to make a concluding TV Movie to wrap up
the TV Show (again maybe this could just be a comic series - hell, I want
closure too!!). Think of the possibilities (I am..). That's why I am being
so positive and excited about the whole thing.

Amen to that brother! The Ewok-Factor, as I call it, is the bane of any
Sci-fi franchise. Though the Ape series suffered from budget cuts as well,
when the producers of any Sci-fi series realize it has a high percentage of
young audience and decides to play to that, in an effort to sell more toys,
it invariably alienates it's older audience and eventually the younger
audience as it gets older. They don't seem to realize that it's the complex
story and adult scenes that made it cool in the first place for young and old
alike. And in their fit of greed end up shooting themselves in the foot.
After all, kid ever snuck in to see The Muppets in Outer Space!
I hope they give the new move an R-rating. Let Dirk Diggler do every female
on the planet, human or ape!

the new movie is using the same title so its going to do wonders to boost the appeal of the older series
    HOWEVER
the new movie is going to most likely dissapoint most original POTA fans because its NOT part of the series, storyline or original timeline.

however looking at it on its own merits it has lots of potential to be a great movie "stealing" from the general ideas of the original films!

Yep, no Conquest, and for some reason the first two seem to be a lot scarcer
than than Escape and Battle (I've only got these two). To be totally honest,
Escape and Battle are about as rare as old socks. These are exceptionally
common even in shrinkwrapped condition - the first thing I did when I bought
them was tear the damn things open and listen to them! You should certainly
be able to pick these ones up for no more than $15/£10.

The stories were certainly altered for the kids market - in Battle, not only
does Cornelius not die, he doesn't even appear in the story to start with!

I get really annoyed when I look for these on e-bay, because you will ALWAYS
see them as "Planet of the Apes book & record" or something like that, but
it's only once you click on the link that you see they're either Escape or
      Battle.

There were lots of these sorts of things made - Star Trek, Space:1999, etc.
It was quite common for comics to be done like this too, since then they
wouldn't even have to bother with all-new art, just slightly adapt some
      existing piece.

Note to the fans in the south of England: Jerry Goldsmith is playing a
concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London on June 28th. I don't know if
he'll play Apes music or not, but I had the joy of seeing him celebrating
his 70th birthday with a few concerts in Scotland and he played a few cues
from his original Apes score. Fantastic stuff.

I've not looked at the page, but www.lso.co.uk apparently has details
      regarding tickets, etc.

There were a few different series of the Power Book & Record sets. One
for POTA, one for superheroes (Spider-Man, the Hulk, Captain America, and
the Fantastic Four), and one for Marvel Comics monsters (Frankenstein,
Tomb of Dracula, Man-Thing, and I think Man-Wolf). There were no voice
credits in any of them, but I do believe they were all produced out of
the same studio because the same voices appeared on the different albums.
As someone already mentioned, there were also 12" albums that contained
the stories but not the booklets (and the turn the page "ping" and "now
please turn the record over to the other side" were removed). There were
also several for the DC superheroes, some book and records, some just 7"
records with no booklet, and of course there were the POTA stories based
on the TV series that were released in 7" and 12" versions. Come to think
of it, I have quite a few of these in my collection.

OK, who wants to start a Power Records website? :-)

I beleive Dave Ballard has a VHS machine that plays both formats. You should ask him where he got it. Hopefuly somewhere on the Web so that it can be ordered. Instead of two VCR's you have one that does it all.

Sounds like you're going to have to invest in one of the pro-machines, which

Yeah, but to my seven year old mind the drawing of the unmasked mutants
was downright GRUESOME! I couldn't even look at that page for the longest
time. Anyone else know what I'm talking about?

Also, the story for the Man-Thing (from Marvel Comics) book & record set
was about a clown who committed suicide (shotgun in the mouth) in the
swamp and the people who were looking for him. At the end, I seem to
recall his ghost came back as was telling the group of people how it was
      OK to laugh.

Can't exactly see how they let that one get out, especially since they
      were directed at kids.

Here in Australia you can buy dual system VCRs (and TVs ) that play both NTSC
and PAL. I have a friend who lives in L.A who has an American VCR that does the
same. So you probably just have to ask around. It's probably not a feature that
      they would promote.
Why would Americans need to watch "foreign" videos when (almost) everything is
released there? For us in Australia, many, many titles don't see the light of
day on VHS, so it's much more of a selling point to buy a VCR knowing you can at
      least import.
It's a different deal with DVD players though. Each country has a different
"zone" or encoding so that you can't play foreign DVDs on a locally purchased
DVD player. But like everything, there's a way around it and you can pay a
"professional" (preferably cash) to spend two minutes de-zoning it and enabling
you to play any DVD from any country.
I HAD to do this as the APES DVD box set isn't scheduled for release here until
the end of the year ( and yes, it'll have the same version of Battle everyone
else -except for maybe Japan- got).
      Best,
      KEN

yes I believe it is Danny Elfman, former punk rock singer from Oingo Boingo in 1983.
got into movies and did BATMAN in 1989 I believe or at least one of the sequels!

i think there is a power records tribute website but not sure where

What I would love to do is to put those power records on the site as a POTA comic-online!
I have all four book and records but like Loc I need to convert them to audio CD.
So Loc if you ever do get the chance to do it, please send me a copy of it.

Yeah... I wouldn't say I collect his work religiously, but looking at my CD
rack, my Goldsmith collection numbers 12 CDs at the moment (three of which
are Ape-related though)! Oh, and an old LP of Logan's Run too. Hell, I'm

Yeah, I've noticed that NTSC playback is quite a common feature on VCRs in
the UK now. My parents bought a new machine just recently with this feature,
so I suppose in theory you can probably tape NTSC->PAL on it, but not vice
versa. I'm just happy because I'll be able to pick up a copy of the pile of

Not much... let me think... a few issues of the Marvel UK comic... two of
the three annuals... the boardgame (which I assume was probably just
licensed from the US anyway)... one jigsaw puzzle (the quite common one
depicting Urko & Zaius in "The Legacy")... a few UK magazines with Ape
articles in them (hmmm, stretching it a bit now)... Not a great deal at all,
        now I think about it.

Oh and the widescreen video release of the original film, from 1993 - far
better packaging than the tapes in the box set - aside from what you can see
from the outside, there's also the fact that you open the box and it has
some behind the scenes information too. (see the wee attached pictures)

Call the company (ie SONY or PIONEER) and ask them what they have/where to get them.

When they first came out her there were 2 types:

            (1) requiring a multi system TV;
            (2) not requiring a multi syatem TV.

            Should be the same.

Well, once released I'll have the trailer on my site.
I can compress a QuickTime trailer to a much smaller Real Player or Mpeg Format. All for the advertisement of the film and for it's fans!

So I'll go with whatever the group says.

            Best,

I THINK WE BETTER NOT SEND IT TO THE GROUP ITSELF CAUSE MOST EMAIL ADDRESSES CANNOT HOLD FILES OVER 1MB !

Terry, did you ask that guy on e-bay for a scan of the front page of the script?

I realise that art is subjective, but I think this is pushing it a bit..

            .html Terry,
If you could identify Heston, you have a greater appreciation than I.

            That's cool.
It would have been cooler if you would have asked him to show you a sneak peek at that storyboard booklet.
