If I
had the money I would love them.
You
should however be VERY careful.
eg
when he mentions they would make good blow-ups what copyright are we
talking?
Also
you can bet some of them are rubbish and the set is NOT complete as he has sold
4.
Just
be careful - it is a lot of money to be giving to a stranger no matter how
convincing the samples are.

Subject: PLANET OF THE APES set photos
Terry -
Hi! I was wondering if you or some other dealer you know would
be interested in picking up an entire lot of original one-of-a-kind set photos
from the set of BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES. These are actually original
color slides taken by the set photographer at the time. He took a few hundred
photos and 20th Century Fox only selected the ones they wanted. He kept the rest
and ended up selling them to a memorabilia store in NY. They sat in the back
room for years until the store owner contacted me and offered them as a lot of
250 slides. The colour and condition on these photos is near perfect. Actually,
most are like new. They are absolutely one of a kind photos. No duplicates were
made for any of these. There are no negatives for slides but they can be used to
make beautiful blow ups. Most are behind the scenes and many are what would be
called publicity shots. Several are variations on what ended up being the lobby
card photos. There is even a photo of the girl who played Linda Harrison's
double in the scene where James Fransiscus tries to drown her in a fountain.
That is a photo you won't find anywhere. In fact many of these are of things
never before seen and all of them are unpublished. I took a few of them to three
trade shows last year and ended up selling 4 of them at no less than $25 each. I
did not have them on display either. They were in a binder under my table and I
only pulled them out if some collector asked for something unique from PLANET OF
THE APES. I have never sold any of these on eBay nor have I ever seen these
offered anywhere. My asking price for the entire lot of 250 is $2250. I
would rather sell these to a dealer as a lot only. Buying the entire lot means
that there won't be other dealers out there selling these at competitive prices.
I can send you a very convincing sample if you like. I already offered these to
a guy at KLAATU COLLECTIBLES but my asking price was higher and he could not
afford it at the time. With the upcoming release of Tim Burton's PLANET OF THE
APES in July, 2001 is definitely going to be "The Year Of The Apes"
which will translate into higher sales of apes related items I'm sure. Let me
know soon if this interests you or anyone else you know. Cheers!

| Subject: "Apes" comic books - closure. |
.htmlHello Jack
That was me who saw the resemblance and I agree there is the possibility
that someone else responsible for the costumes read these comics.
I also wrote to ask if anyone had more info about possible
unpublished/unillustrated stories that never saw the light of day due to the
mag being canned.
The final Curtis issue, #29, Future Chronicles V finishes with what looks
like a football stadium so I doubt very much it was planned to finish there.
I would really love some answers - maybe the 60 page article will provide
some...?
Battle wrapped up in issue #28 so that was the end of the movie adaptations.
But there was a Terror chapter in the same issue which again gave no
indication of closure and suggested there was more to come (Terror was by
now illustrated by Herb Trimpe).

Subject: [pota] "Apes" comic book fans need only apply
Head's up! Another "Apes" related article to watch out for. The magazine
"Comics Journal" had an epic 60 pg. interview with Tom Sutton. Remember in
Marvel's "Apes" magazine the feature called "Future History Chronicles". Tom
Sutton drew those, He also drew the mag's flagship series "Terror on the
POTA" in issues 19, 20 & 23. I didn't even know about the magazines as a
kid, but as an adult I wondered, "Who is this maniac who draws such lavish
comic books?" I know alot of people have a soft spot for Mike Ploog, but Tom
Sutton is my favorite "Apes" illustrator, and "Chronicles" is my favorite
"Apes" comic (along with another unique one, Adventure's "Urchak's Folly".
"Chronicles" got in alot of trouble with fans because it's so out there,
taking place in a world of city-ships. Someone here said it looks alot like
what we've seen of Burton's movie and I see a resemblance. Burton has said
he was never much of a comics reader, but perhaps he used to read Marvel's
magazine, which isn't really a comic book, it's a "monster magazine" (Burton
has said "Apes" was an influence on him). Perhaps Sutton's work stuck in his
blender of a brain. Sutton also used to do alot of gothic horror comics and,
of course, gothic horror is a mainstay of Burton's work.
The article only devotes about 2 pages to Sutton's "Apes" work but
highlights it as one of his best. It seemed unique because it was unique.
Sutton and writer Doug Moench really went all out on it. Explains Sutton:
"Doug had figured this whole goddamn thing out - everything! It was like he
was writing a novel or something. And he was not very happy when they
decided, after three, four, five issues, whatever there were , that they
just aborted the thing." (Sutton says they had planned 8 parts; only 5 were
published). As for himself, " I didn't have to deal with costumed
superheroes and I didn't have to deal with a lot of other things I didn't
like. These (characters) I really did like. They were relevant. They were
almost different folks getting together, trying to get along within a highly
confined situation like a city."
He says he went way beyond the monetary considerations because "I think I
would have done almost anything. I wanted that book to work. There are things
that you want to work, for your own reasons , whatever they are...I would
make enormous drawings. These things were twice the size, easily twice the
size. And I'd make these very, very tight drawings, which I hardly ever
did".
"Future History Chronicles" appear in Marvel # 12, 15, 17 , 24 & 29. The
interview is in "Comics Journal" #230 (Feb. 2001); Two covers are available,
both by Sutton.

.htmlBy the way,
The 3 7" 33 1/3 RPM Little LP Records were entitled:
Mountain of the Delphi;
Battle of Two World;
And Dawn of the Tree People.
The one that was only available on the 12" was "Volcano".
The artwork on the 7" records FAR surpassed that on the larger LPs and the
"talking books"!

Hi Loc
I had these as a kid - they were available in most record stores. I
recently upgraded and bought a sealed set. They are not a particularly rare
item, but are official Planet of the Apes merchandise and therefore must be
had! You are right, a Conquest version was never made. A sealed set is a
lot harder to find but not much fun to examine (I still have the original
ones though thank goodness).
You will find a lot of the story content has been missed/modified in
comparison to the original movies. The audience is children and that is why
(and probably explains the absence of the Conquest version- too violent).
Same company made 3 "singles" containing stories from the TV Series and an
LP album containing these stories - but no graphic accompaniment.
There was also an LP album which compiled the 4 Movie adaptations (again
with no accompanying graphic books) - possibly another explanation as to why
no Conquest.
I would love to talk to an old exec from Power Records to get some answers
to these questions - anyone know where to start?

Subject: [pota] POTA books and records!
Hey gang! I just got back from visiting family in Missouri and went to an
antique store there. I found 4 POTA books and record sets, one for each
movie
but they didn't have a Conquest set and I don't think one was made. The
records aren't scratched and are like new but the books have some wear on
the
covers but still look great. The inside pages are like new also. I paid $10
each for them. Does anyone know anything about these? They are like comic
books and I believe published by marvel. I remember having a few books like
these when I was a kid but I never had the POTA ones. (I had Spider-man,
Dracula, and Frankenstein I believe.) I would like to burn the records onto
a
couple cd's but I need a record player and something to connect it to my
computer. I'd like to know if I got a good deal or not and how much they are
worth. Thanks!
Loc
P.S. At the same antique store's booth they had a POTA coloring book for
$15.
I didn't get it since I didn't have enough money. <.html

The interview with Tom Sutton doesn't say what happened to any unused
stories but it says they planned 8 parts for "Future History Chronicles". In
one of the final editorials for the mag they talked about how "Terror" and
"Chronicles" were going to develop so I guess the cancellation was

.htmlGo to the ain't it cool website for two reports from "Toy Fair". I guess Fox
had a big presentation including a showing of the trailer and some dailies.
Mark Wahlberg and Rick Baker spoke, they had people dressed as apes, and
Baker did a makeup demo. The second witness is the best, recorded it very
professionally. For him, follow the link to his "home theatre " website. A
good report. I guess in the dailies there's even a moment where Walhberg
calls them "monkeys" and an ape is offended. The more things change, the
more they stay the same.

Go to ationfigure.com to see the line for this year's "Movie Maniacs". I
couldn't make out all the movies they're doing but they'll have a couple of
"Terminator" figures. And check out the "Jaws" toy! It includes the boat and
Quint being eaten. Gotta get that! Ironically, Todd McFarlane is a big

well I am used to buying tons of stuff on the
internet (since that would I do for a living) but yes any packages I find over
$1000.00 are always a bit risky especially with no pictures!
Terry
If I
had the money I would love them.
You
should however be VERY careful.
eg
when he mentions they would make good blow-ups what copyright are we
talking?
Also
you can bet some of them are rubbish and the set is NOT complete as he has
sold 4.
Just
be careful - it is a lot of money to be giving to a stranger no matter how
convincing the samples are.
Michael
would this interest anyone if I purchased these ?
or you have the chance to purchase them direct instead if you
have the money handy!

Subject: PLANET OF THE APES set photos
Terry -
Hi! I was wondering if you or some other dealer you know
would be interested in picking up an entire lot of original one-of-a-kind set
photos from the set of BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES. These are actually
original color slides taken by the set photographer at the time. He took a few
hundred photos and 20th Century Fox only selected the ones they wanted. He
kept the rest and ended up selling them to a memorabilia store in NY. They sat
in the back room for years until the store owner contacted me and offered them
as a lot of 250 slides. The colour and condition on these photos is near
perfect. Actually, most are like new. They are absolutely one of a kind
photos. No duplicates were made for any of these. There are no negatives for
slides but they can be used to make beautiful blow ups. Most are behind the
scenes and many are what would be called publicity shots. Several are
variations on what ended up being the lobby card photos. There is even a photo
of the girl who played Linda Harrison's double in the scene where James
Fransiscus tries to drown her in a fountain. That is a photo you won't find
anywhere. In fact many of these are of things never before seen and all of
them are unpublished. I took a few of them to three trade shows last year and
ended up selling 4 of them at no less than $25 each. I did not have them on
display either. They were in a binder under my table and I only pulled them
out if some collector asked for something unique from PLANET OF THE APES. I
have never sold any of these on eBay nor have I ever seen these offered
anywhere. My asking price for the entire lot of 250 is $2250. I would
rather sell these to a dealer as a lot only. Buying the entire lot means that
there won't be other dealers out there selling these at competitive prices. I
can send you a very convincing sample if you like. I already offered these to
a guy at KLAATU COLLECTIBLES but my asking price was higher and he could not
afford it at the time. With the upcoming release of Tim Burton's PLANET OF THE
APES in July, 2001 is definitely going to be "The Year Of The Apes" which will
translate into higher sales of apes related items I'm sure. Let me know soon
if this interests you or anyone else you know. Cheers!

Come to think of it, Hasbro had the rights
to a new "Apes" since '93 (see "Sci-Fi Universe" #1). Fox has had deals with
Hasbro, Dark Horse, etc. long before "Apes" entered the picture. They do "Star
Wars", "Aliens", all that crap together. The surprise is Topps getting the
cards, since Inkworks did so well. Maybe it's just the highest
bidder.

But I got it at a news stand, maybe they get stuff early. Julianne Moore from

it).
You already saw tonight's "Access

Thanks Jeff.
Yeah I saw Hollywood Access
Tonight, more "Oscar" hype than anything else. No Apes but from the
description of that excellent APE gala event it seems as though this Access
Hollywood "first look" was covering that event leading to the Trailer release.
Because the description of this show on their web site said something
about Wahlberg coming face to face with his double, or something like
that.
No doubt they were talking about the TOY
FAIR event with the release of the trailer for the first time and an
appearance with Wahlberg.
So no doubt Access Hollywood has the
report ready to air, but it seems that FOX is holding it a little while
longer.
Bloody
Bastards....
How much longer must we
suffer?
FOX, it's the fans that are going to make
this movie a HIT, and not your special invited guests!

holding it until next week. "Monkeybone" opens the 23rd and they'll probably
place it with that. That way A.H. can say it hits theatres "this

It came out on Feb. 8 around
here. But I got it at a news stand, maybe they get stuff early. Julianne
Moore from "Hannibal" is on the cover (and there's an article about people
who are turned on by stuffed animals, appropriate, no? Maybe Wahlberg should
read it).
You already saw tonight's "Access
Hollywood?
Thanks Jeff.
Yeah I saw Hollywood Access
Tonight, more "Oscar" hype than anything else. No Apes but from the
description of that excellent APE gala event it seems as though this Access
Hollywood "first look" was covering that event leading to the Trailer
release. Because the description of this show on their web site said
something about Wahlberg coming face to face with his double, or something
like that.
No doubt they were talking about the
TOY FAIR event with the release of the trailer for the first time and an
appearance with Wahlberg.
So no doubt Access Hollywood has the
report ready to air, but it seems that FOX is holding it a little while
longer.
Bloody
Bastards....
How much longer must we
suffer?
FOX, it's the fans that are going to
make this movie a HIT, and not your special invited
guests!

Perhaps your right. But I just find it odd that
Double, Trailer and Wahlberg does also add up to TOY FAIR as well, but again
you could be right. Just about everyone else has their Trailer out, hell even
Lord of the Rings that is due in Christmas. And yet FOX keeps holding out, I
just hope this doesn't create a back lash with fans if this continues
any further.
That's why I say to FOX, screw the special guests

For sure, believe me I'll be riding that wave with
you as well. I really feel this movie is going to be very good. But when it
comes to advertisment FOX better start getting this Ball Rollin because I get
e-mail all time with people asking me. "There's going to be another Planet of

remake.
And as Columbia did with Godzilla, not revealing the

Well I think the best thing to do
would be to make a full collection of reports until just after the release
date. Place it all on one or two 2 hour VHS tapes. Then ship them out to those
who ask. Because if not I or anyone else will be shipping out tape every week
while exclusives are being aired. (if and when ever that
happens)
But in the meantime I'll be posting
them on real player or mpeg on the site.

McFarland's company had/has a script in development, with one of the

At the time of the project's announcement, Todd even made some

I agree! When you look at the difference between the classic apes and the
new apes, there's a lot of room to play around with. You can't copyright the
idea of talking apes. If you could Lance Lot Link and Monkeyed Movies would

A couple of weeks ago they ran a feature announcing their Herrman release
and their plan to do two CDs a month. Here are the tantalising hints they
gave us for the next few month's releases:
"FSM Vol. 4, No. 1 - '70a sci-fi doubleheader.
FSM Vol. 4, No. 2 - a '50s Fox CinemaScope classic.
FSM Vol. 4, No. 4 - Mr. Waxman -- '50s -- a goodie.
FSM Vol. 4, No. 3 - a '70s smash. This will be a popular title... [No. 3 and
4 will be released in flip-flopped order for production reasons]
FSM Vol. 4, No. 5 - oh, this composer is seldom represented -- state secret!
FSM Vol. 4, No. 6 - a classic '50s title nobody ever thought they would
have."
Teasing! Damn them!
>

>> do with a release, not just Apes films, so I'm really looking forward

>
>Which ones would you like to see released?
"Silent Running" - music by Peter Schiekle or something like that, with a
couple of songs by Joan Baez (I'm a hippy at heart). Wonderful score, good
songs and further more has only ever been released on LP. I'm sure I
remember hearing one of the FSM guys (Jeff Bond, perhaps) saying he liked
it, so you never know.
"Soylent Green" - main title only. The majority of the film uses classical
music, so a soundtrack is a bit pointless (Morning? Pastoral symphony? Not
exactly rare). However, Fred Mirow (sp?) wrote a great main title for it,
which as far as I know has never been released anywhere. As well as being
great, it'd be a nice tribute since he died last year (or maybe the year
before?).
"Logan's Run" - another of Goldsmith's finest, a brilliant combination of
orchestra and electronics. Not as "out there" as Planet of the Apes, but
experimental nonetheless. Why I don't think it's likely: aside from it
possibly being a little too late to be included in "Silver Age Classics",
it's already been released on CD twice. Once was several years ago, long
deleted, and contained only the same tracks as the LP (which I own). The
other CD was last year, combined with his score from "Coma" and again only
had the same tracks as the LP. This may also have been a bootleg, I'm not
sure. Why it might happen: There's still a demand for the complete score,
and Goldsmith is still a big name in film music collecting circles.
"Damnation Alley" - a year later than Logan's Run and a not-so-popular film,
so not a likely candidate perhaps. One of those films that's so bad it's
good, but then Goldsmith has made a habit of writing great scores to poor
films. Logan's Run was like Jerry's sort of conservative effort at mixing
synths with orchestra - Damnation Alley is as if he said "well, that worked,
now I'm going to REALLY go to town on it!"
Now, on to the Ape scores.
"Escape" is an unlikely candidate for a full release (I stress this is just
my opinion and hopefully I'll be made to look a fool). It has already had
about quarter of an hour or so released officially, and numerous bootlegs
released of the rest of it - so a complete release is unlikely from my point
of view. However, there is that cult appeal of PotA and the fact that it's
Goldsmith, so you never know.
"Battle" - I would say this is definitely feasible. FSM's "Beneath" CD was
well-received, so why not the other Rosenman effort? They've also got a good
track record with Rosenman, having released his Fantastic Voyage too. Not to
mention the fact that I kissed ass so much after they released THe Omega Man
and Beneath the PotA that they'll maybe just release it to milk me for all
I'm worth.
"Conquest" - you never know. None of it has been released as yet. Cult PotA
appeal. Tom Scott has a following (accomplished jazz musician, I've got a
couple of his albums - at least I think it's the same guy). There's even the
Goldsmith factor (Scott based part of the score on Goldsmith's music for the
orignal film).
Perhaps Vol 4 could be a dream double release of Conquest and Battle. But
realistically I doubt it. We'll just need to wait and see.

I have to agree with you on that one. Judging by the conventions I've been
to POTA
Fans account for maybe ten percent of the Sci-fi film going public. Buckaroo
Banzai fans even less. They're all SW or ST fans. To support this film we'd
all have to watch it 10 times, if we like it. We can only help it with our
humble contributions.
Even it I really like it, I probably won't see it more than twice. Maybe
three times.
Face it! We are a minority in the Sci-fi genre. Hopfully this film will
help change that. <.html

| Subject: New APES vs. Classic APES |
|
.html .htmlI certainly agree with comments here that it's going to take A LOT
more than just the patronage of old APES' fans to make the new
movie a hit. Fox knows this, hence the whole 're-invention' thing
(which for this loyal fan of the original film has always meant just
'bastardization'). The new POTA film is going to have to appeal
mostly to the core movie-going public, which is teenagers and early-twenty
somethings. They're the ones who, if they like the movie, will go see it
again and again. That's why I fear we 'Classic
APES' fans may end up being ape-palled at the 'dumbing-down' of
the concept, which I fear is what has happened.
One aspect of the new movie that does intrigue me is that the apes in this
one are apparently the product of human re-engineering of
simian genes. I thought the failure of the original series to ever mention
'genetic re-engineering' was one of its major logical gaps.
There's no way the apes could have advanced the way they did in
as short a time as they did without human intervention in their genes. I
hope this is fully developed in the new movie, and perhaps is used as a major
'warning to mankind' theme. That
would give the film some kind of intellectual depth.
Well, it seemed like a very slow day at the POTA e-group so I
thought I'd just throw this out. Feel free to coment. Now I'm going to go

well I agree that our websites help bring
awareness and definitely help promote POTA.
but I do think also taht the new film is goin to
get awareness from the general public that may care about the old stuff and
may NOT care about the old stuff.
because its on the internet it gives people an
opportunity to check out stuff for free
this is a benefit but it does not prove that we
are enough to support the film
Well, I agree Terry for also the GREATEST

So when it comes too my opinion on Fox's tacticts
on advertisement, maybe I'm just talking out of my ass.

Fans account for maybe ten percent of the Sci-fi film going public. Buckaroo
Banzai fans even less. They're all SW or ST fans. To support this film we'd
all have to watch it 10 times, if we like it. We can only help it with our
humble contributions.
Even it I really like it, I probably won't see it more than twice. Maybe
three times.
Face it! We are a minority in the Sci-fi genre. Hopfully this film will

I gots ta disagree wit cha' there Rory Calhoon. If in the first time line
Aldo was the first to say "NO" it was no doubt the result of DNA manipulation
or selective breeding by the human masters. However in the secondary time
line with Caesar's DNA they wouldn't need the 2000 years or a hundred
generations to produce evolved apes. Though Lisa didn't seem to need any
help. I wonder how long it took her to go from saying "NO" to saying " Not

Right on John. At the risk of sounding like the self-appreciation society.
And as the brothers say . . . Damn Skippy! 'Cause no matter how good the new

Well, Terry . . . I sound like the manager for The Commitments, Well Terry,
that's true, partly anyway. It will determine if it makes money. but just
because a lot of people like something doesn't make it good. If there's one
thing I know about any form of art, is it's all subjective. Many are good
and unpopular, and many are popular yet bad. Hanson for example. It may be
good for the people who like it, but their taste is in their mouths. I'd
rather it be good and popular, but if it's bad, I hope it's still popular.
It can only help our cause. <.html

all the cult followers threw up their arms: The high priest had blasphemed.
As it happened, STNG turned out not too bad (please insert your own opinion
here), even though it was quite different to the original.
It seems that we are having a very similar discussion...
So, I'll be watching the film on its own terms. The only downside I can see
is that Burton will miss the essence of POTA, which is not the hunt scenes
or the action material of Conquest, but the denial of something so
undermining to ape society, it had to be institutionally enforced. Think of
the most chilling scenes from the original, the ones that make you stop and
think:
Ursus' face at the start of the hunt (or is it Urko - pardon the ignorance).
Destroyed Statue of Liberty
The museum scene
Zaius crushing the aeroplane
Zaius rubbing out Taylor's writing
Zira's eyes on discovering Taylor can write
The 'dirty apes' moment - the ape reaction
I could go on. The point is that these are not 'action' scenes, but static
visuals.
Let's hope Burton isn't filming an ape version of the mongol hordes, which
is what I get from the pictures.
Rant over

was the "Hunt Leader." He as also the gorilla that told Dr. Zaius he "didn't

was also seen as a General in ESCAPE.
Marcus is the gorilla that pushes Dr. Zira away when she touches Taylor

"Smile!". He was played by an actor
