Hi Terry,
Yeah, it says issue #1 on the cover. I have no idea if there were any
more and to tell you the truth, I can't even recall where I got it from.
From an Ebay auction, but I don't recall who or where.

Hope you are recovering well - I have had a flu for about 2 weeks (and

Yes, that is the comic I recall you showing me.
Terry, were you aware of this one? Do you have any more of the Argentinian
comics for sale?

Hi Michael,
Apologies for the delayed response to this post. I've been sick w/
the
flu for the last few days.
With regards to foreign comics, I have a few representations from
various countries in my collection which include Mexico, Spain, Portugal,
Finland, France, U.K and of coarse Australia. Most of these are direct
reprints of the Marvel magazines. Some include articles, again mostly
reprints of the U.S stories.
I have only one comic which features a newly created story line based
on
the TV series characters. It is from Argentina.
It's dated Jan '77 and is a 36 page black and white comic. The graphics
are kind of crummy but it's an interesting example all the same.
See attached scan.
Best,
KEN

.html .htmlHi Matt,
Yes, it's worth it to get Eric Greene's book, even though I do think he goes
a bit too far with what he thinks the filmmakers intended.
Be sure you get the paperback version because it has a lot of rare photos
from Jacob's private collection.
And, yes, it does sound like it would have made a better sequel than BENEATH,
especially since it has no mutants.

I dont recall which issue had what printed in it. I seem to recall that there are 4 unknown scripts from the tv series floating around. However these could might be totaly new scripts, whereas some are just different versions of used episodes with different titles.
on www.ebay.com you can find most of these turn up including unused scripts for the movies including the new movie which I just purchased myself!

Dear Terry,
One of the projects for Simian Scrolls is to try to track down un-used
scripts for the TV series. I have read the Rod Serling scripts in Ape
Chronicles but I can recall dimly reading, possibly in Ape Chronicles, a
script for the TV series episode called "The Hostage" where they are all in
an underground bunker of some sort. Have I got that right? I can not, at
the moment, find that particular issue and I wonder if there is any chance
that you could possibly e-mail a copy of that over to me.
Have you got any ideas regarding tracking down other scripts? There is
mention of another script called "a Fallen God" and I am sure that there
must have been others.
With all best wishes.
Yours sincerely,
JOHN ROCHE , Simian Scrolls

Yeah, in the book it's ahhh . . . well, as Eddy Izzard would say . . .Pretty
fuckin' French! Even Boulle thought the book wasn't cinematic enough to make
into a movie, and he was right. You couldn't make a shooting script for the
book verbatim. But look what they did with it! Showed him! I would have
liked to seen a modern Ape society, but again, even with a tight budget look
what they did with it. I hope the new film can say as much considering all
the advantages they've had to work with. <.html

Hey Gang,
I spoke with FOX INTERACTIVE yesterday about the new interactive
APES game that' do out in the spring. Fox is "restructuring" its
interactive division and it now looks like they will be selling off the
distribution rights to outside sources, whereas before they had planned
on handling it all themselves. It's still due for a spring release but
at this point we have no idea who's going to be releasing it.
ALSO:
Someone on the list had said they were searching for a CORNELIUS
Medicom figure. Felix at Fantasiatoyz says he has all of the ones
that have been released so far. So you might want to give him a try.

.html .htmlHey John,
Finally got my Cinescape today, Friday March 2nd. I wonder what the problem
was. Might have something to do with the mag having been sold to Fandom.com.
Anyway, not many pictures. Kind of a disappointment. Hope there's more in
the future. Meanwhile, there's a good interview with Rick Baker at Corona's
Coming Attractions (who got it from someplace else). I liked Baker knocking
the background masks from the original. They really were bad, and in PLANET
they actually zoom in on them a couple times. BENEATH is nearly made a
shambles by too many background masks on the gorillas.
Hey, where is everybody in this group? Not much to say, I guess.

How's it going? Yeah, the trailer looks great. Really makes me want to see
more, especially Tim Roth's makeup. I read today that filming ends this
Thursday, March 8th, which is the exact same day they shot the
Heston/Robinson test film back in 1966!!! A good omen, I hope. Then ILM has
100 SFX shots to do, so we really don't get to see a true trailer to this
film for probably three months ("give or take a decade"). Oh, let the
months fly by!

Check out our way cool Web site Zap2it.com and enter our Best Movie of
Summer 2001 contest and vote for your favorite flick. Planet of the Apes is
amongst the choices we've listed. Here's the address:

Also, there's a cool contest going on at the same site where we're giving up
a belt buckle that's an exact duplicate of one that Kevin Costner's wears as
part of his Elvis get-up in 3000 Miles to Graceland (cool movie, huh?). The
address is http://www.zap2it.com/movies/graceland.html
And hey, while you're at it, why not link to our site? In the not to distant
future we'll be running interviews with stars from Planet of the Apes.

For your information, the average price to an Aussie for a Medicom figure is
$66.39 Australian ($35 U.S). 19 pounds is only $52.44 Aussie. Gee, what a
bargain, those crazy poms are practically giving them away!
Needless to say the poor Aussie dollar is indeed that...poor.

Hi Matt,
Yes, it's worth it to get Eric Greene's book, even though I do think he goes
a bit too far with what he thinks the filmmakers intended.
Be sure you get the paperback version because it has a lot of rare photos
from Jacob's private collection.
And, yes, it does sound like it would have made a better sequel than
BENEATH,
especially since it has no mutants.

Yeah, in the book it's ahhh . . . well, as Eddy Izzard would say . . .Pretty
fuckin' French! Even Boulle thought the book wasn't cinematic enough to
make
into a movie, and he was right. You couldn't make a shooting script for the
book verbatim. But look what they did with it! Showed him! I would have
liked to seen a modern Ape society, but again, even with a tight budget look
what they did with it. I hope the new film can say as much considering all
the advantages they've had to work with.

At this point I am tentatively planning to sell these "oversized" comics for
$4.00 US funds each (discounts available if want a few)
shipping to US/canada will be $4.00 US funds
shipping airmail overseas will be approx $7.00 US funds
This comic will tentatively ship mid-April to me.
In June an official comic book adapation of the movie will come out.
I will get those in at that time too and I am suspecting cover price to be $4 or $5 depending on thickness!
I am also going to try and get in stock all magazines this spring/summer with POTA references. (Cinescape etc)
So if anyone is looking for any specific issues let me know and I'll try to help out.
DARK HORSE EXTRA #34 oversized comic book with a POTA poster advertising the new film
a Burton-PotA poster and preview of the Dark Horse comic
April 4 2001 is the due date.

some of their releases and comes in the form of a poster folded down into 4 pages

Good luck with you quest Rory.
Up until recently I worked for TCFHE in Australia and was persistent
enough to get them to release the TV series on VHS here in Australia. We
developed the packaging locally and when we offered it to other territories
to use should they want to release the TV series also, there were no takers.
But that was a year ago, after July 27, I'm sure Fox will be revisiting
the potential of releasing all and any POTA products that they have the
rights to.
I did enquire about the release of the Cartoon series and was told
that compared to the likes of other Kids properties such as Power Rangers,
X-Men etc, that the APES cartoon was not exactly high on the list of priorities.
Who knows, maybe they'll release a DVD box set that contains both the
live action and animated series'.
Well it COULD happen.

They are very definitely NOT bootlegs. They are legitimately produced by
Film Score Monthly magazine. The magazine caters to the soundtrack
specialist and this is why they know the sort of obscure releases that
people want, yet are not likely to appear in shops any time soon. It is also
why they are produced on a small scale (very limited distribution - FSM and
a select few retailers - and are limited, usually to 3000 copies).
So for Fox shutting them down, noy likely - in fact I think it's the
opposite. They must have some kind of deal with Fox - go and look at the
numerous releases so far and count how many of them are from Fox pictures.
They're limited, but very definitely officially-approved releases. In fact,
Film Score Monthly usually avoid bootlegs - they have a policy that they
never review a CD on their site that they know is a boot.

know why Fox isn't doing it themselves (probably don't think there's enough

Hello Terry,
Just thought you might be interested, if you didn't know already, that
Film Score Monthly ,the people who released the sound track to BENEATH
last year have released the complete soundtracks to CONQUEST and BATTLE
on one cd with Lalo Schifren's TV theme as a bonus.
They do encourage suggestions from fans and I'm trying to get the entire
POTA television scores released. Perhaps your fan club can help.
The following is an excerpt from my note to them:
"I hope you will consider releasing a complete ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF
THE APES soundtrack.
The abbreviated suite on Varese is barely 54% of the score, clocking in
at only 16:27. (The complete
score, available as a bootleg (Soundtrack Library) coupled with
DAMNATION ALLEY, runs 29:42 . A different
boot (Pony Boy) coupled with MEPHISTO WALTZ is also incomplete, lacking
2 cues. Namely, the sequence
when Zira says good-bye to Heloise, and the sequence where the apes
walk toward the oil field at night
remarking that the lights of the city look like stars.)
But besides the brevity, many of the cues are truncated so as to "flow
seamlessly" into one another and
thereby omitting all those "unnecessary" notes. It really deserves a
better presentation than this. And the
same is true of THE OTHER. It's as if Varese was preserving one score to
butcher another. That's just my
opinion. Many people may like the "suite" thing. I do not, and I hope
you will consider correcting it at some
point in the future.
And hopefully you will also consider releasing some of the wonderful
musical dissonance from the PLANET
OF THE APES TV series. The first 6 episodes had original scores written
for them. Lalo Schifren scored
episodes 1,2, and 4: ESCAPE TO TOMORROW (pilot), THE GLADIATORS, and THE
GOOD SEEDS.
Richard (Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea) LaSalle scored episode 3: THE
TRAP. And Earl (I Spy) Hagen
scored episodes 5 and 6: THE LEGACY, and TOMORROW'S TIDE.
I would try to put one (or all; how about a 3 disc set) out while the
movie is being promoted, that way you get
free advertising. These are all challenging, remarkable scores that
should be preserved. "
Anyway Terry, that's just an FYI. Hopefully we'll see more stuff
released with the movie.

.htmlI have a CD of "Escape" PLUS the "Mephisto Waltz" ( also Goldsmith) which has
very plane packaging that was released by Pony Express. It claims to be volume
one in a series of "film music by jerry goldsmith". It also says that it's for
promotional use only. So if it's not a bootleg it may be a test disc for a legit
CD that was never released? The total running time of the "Escape" score is
over 21 minutes, so it's longer than the "Escape" suite (16:27) that appears on
the most recent Varese Sarbande release of the "Planet" soundtrack.
Just on that release, the liner notes are by Jeff Bond from Film Score Monthly

The explanation for this is in the liner notes (page 7, bottom paragraph,
left column). Basically, the prologue music was taken from another cue
for BATTLE (included on the CD as well) and tracked into the beginning of
the film.

Nope, that's a boot. It's just common practice to print something like
"promo" on it to make it look otherwise. I don't want to encourage illegal
bootlegging of Apes goods, but if you want to get ahold of the love theme
from Escape (that rather nice 70s-sounding ditty that plays while the apes
go shopping) then this is currently the only way to get hold of it.
I suppose you get someone to copy the bootleg for you, then the bootleggers
aren't getting any money either! :)

This would be a more difficult one I suspect. For one thing, I don't think
Fox would be too excited at the prospect of an Escape release on the grounds
that they've already released a CD containing a lot of the music (though if
they were paid only a flat fee for it's use by Varese then I guess it's more
likely). Secondly, if FSM were to release another Apes CD they could start
to hear a bit of a backlash due to a perceived bias on the part of some
fans.
Of course, we'd probably have the Goldsmith and Schifrin fans on our side
too...
And anyway, there's no such thing as too much PotA!

PS As a small aside, FSM announced recently that The Omega Man has sold more

Yep, that's true I suppose. I understand however that while they may have a
good relationship with Fox, Jerry Goldsmith isn't too fond of them.
And by the way, "Bandolero!" has been released - by previous Apes CD guys
Intrada. Like Intrada's Apes CD it's not exactly complete, but it's probably
a fair representation of the music.

Not familiar with "Cleopatra", or indeed much of Alex North's work I'm

And what's the problem with mutants? BENEATH is a great movie all around,

After viewing the trailer a few times, my concern is that Burton is
taking a well written series deeply rooted in social/political allegory
(although they were still very entertaining) and turning it into a simple
popcorn munching, action flick. Not that there's anything wrong with
those types of films, but I'd certainly expect more from the POTA
franchise. I think that at the end of the day, the new POTA will be very
similar to Burton's remake of Sleepy Hollow inasmuch as it'll be
enjoyable in it's own right, but the only thing it has in common with the
original/source material is the title.

.htmlMichael,
For the book and record sets, I have all four POTA sets, both Batman,
ManThing, Frankenstein (although it's misplaced at the moment), the first
four Superhero sets (Spiderman, Hulk, Captain America & The Falcon,
Fantastic Four). I also have the 12" version of the aforementioned
Superhero stories (booklets weren't released with the full albums), two
different Space: 1999, and The Six Million Dollar Man. There were also a
series of 7" releases (ran at 33 RPM) that didn't feature artwork. From
those I have three Batman, two Spiderman, Metamorpho/Plastic Man,
Flash/Aquaman, and Mountain of the Delphi (sans the cover). Someone knew
I was a POTA fan and gave me some stuff while cleaning out his basement.
Among them was a copy of the BATTLE book/record set (though it was
missing the first and last few pages) and 'Delphi' was in the book along
with the BATTLE 45 (fortunately I found a full version of BATTLE later).
One thing I noticed was that- much like the POTA movies- a lot of the
Power stories didn't exactly end on happy notes. The
Spiderman/Hulk/Captain America/FF stories all had downer endings, Man
Thing was about the ghost of a clown that committed suicide (and the
suicide was part of the story no less), the Monster gets killed at the
end of Frankenstein, and so on. If anyone here has either the Dracula or
Wolfman sets, I'm curious to know how those ended.
Kind of makes you think how impression made upon us in our youth can
stick with us our entire life.
BTW Michael, are you the one who posted the link for the images of the TV
series videos released in Australia all those moons ago?

There were a few different series of the Power Book & Record sets. One
for POTA, one for superheroes (Spider-Man, the Hulk, Captain America, and
the Fantastic Four), and one for Marvel Comics monsters (Frankenstein,
Tomb of Dracula, Man-Thing, and I think Man-Wolf). There were no voice
credits in any of them, but I do believe they were all produced out of
the same studio because the same voices appeared on the different albums.
As someone already mentioned, there were also 12" albums that contained
the stories but not the booklets (and the turn the page "ping" and "now
please turn the record over to the other side" were removed). There were
also several for the DC superheroes, some book and records, some just 7"
records with no booklet, and of course there were the POTA stories based
on the TV series that were released in 7" and 12" versions. Come to think
of it, I have quite a few of these in my collection.
OK, who wants to start a Power Records website? :-)

I won't be eating my words, however. Still no evidence this is a thinking
mans movie. Just seems like gorilla wars, a typical action picture, though a
good one. But I am hoping that Burton and Co. can slip some though provoking
material by Zanuck, like the writers did on the original. Of course being
black listed Michael Wilson had more practice at it, and Zauck may not be
fooled a second time. But since the movie is practically in the can, there's
little hope of that. <.html

.htmlGet the Greene paperback. It's cheaper, there's rare photos and the new
movie section is updated (with some James Cameron quotes I got directly from
the man). Doesn't include Burton, though. - - - Jeff Krueger

Hey Alex,
How's it going?
Yeah, the trailer looks great. Really makes me want to see
more, especially Tim Roth's makeup. I read today that filming
ends this Thursday, March 8th, which is the exact same day they shot the
Heston/Robinson test film back in 1966!!! A good omen, I hope.
Then ILM has 100 SFX shots to do, so we really don't get to see a
true trailer to this film for probably three months ("give or take a
decade"). Oh, let the months fly by!
Best,
Rory

.html
Well, when it comes too deeper meanings to the
original POTA.
Half of us or maybe even more would never had know
if it were not for the "Behind the Planet of the Apes Doc".
So as for deeper meanings in the remake or revisit,
truth is you can find a deeper meaning in just about anything...so believe me
you will find something in this revisit.
And not to give anything away, religion is one of
them.
Boy oh boy, the church is going to flip out when
they see this movie!
hehehe!!
Religous fanatics have no place in this world
anyway...that's my point of view.
So it will serve them right!
No offence too anyone for I believe in God
myself.
I'm just not a fanatic.

Alex <.html <.html

| Subject: "It's just a theory." |
|
.html .htmlOkay group,
It's Sunday, "The Lone Gunmen" isn't doing it for me, and I've got work
tomorrow. So, let me hear what some of you think of this theory of mine.
You know in PLANET where Cornelius shows Taylor his map? Well, take a good
look at the "dead sea," then find a map of the US that shows Chesapeake Bay
in Maryland and Virginia. Now turn the map so that the Atlantic Ocean is in
the south. What do you think?
The way the end of PLANET is shot, Taylor has to be riding north when he
finds the Statue of Liberty. So, the dead sea, the cornfield, Ape City, it's
all south and west of the Statue of Liberty.
So, how come in BENEATH Brent stumbles into Queensbourgh Plaza, which is east
on New York City on Long Island? Because of that I think there are some APES
fans who think Ape City is supposed to be on Long Island or in Connecticut,
but I think it's more probably in the Smokey Mountains someplace. This would
have been a good place for Caesar to take his people to hide in caves or
something when the bombs began to fall.
That, of course, would mean that the city in CONQUEST was part of a huge East
Coast megalopolis that would stretch from Boston to below Washington DC......
in 1991?!!!!!
Alright, just one more thought. Can anyone explain to me how in BATTLE the
apes are wearing the same outfits they wear in PLANET? In 2000 years, give
or take a decade, the apes never changed their clothing style? (Just
another reason BATTLE is the silliest of the APES films, I think.)
Okay, that's "Enough of the Planet of the Apes." Everybody have a good
Monday. Those in the east (where PLANET took place), have a nice snow day
tomorrow, and also everyone remember that Wednesday is the day Arthur P.
Jacobs was born. Let's all tell Jeff to tell Natalie, "Happy Birthday to
Arthur."

The new issue of "Wizard" has a short
article on the new comics and says a 3 issue prequel will be out in May
and the graphic novel adaptation will be out in July. Personally, I'm more
interested in the new story than the adaptation. - - - Jeff

Subject: [pota] POTA promotional comic
available and other new POTA in print
At this point I am tentatively planning to sell these "oversized" comics
for
$4.00 US funds each (discounts available if want a few)
shipping to US/canada will be $4.00 US funds
shipping airmail overseas will be approx $7.00 US funds
This comic will tentatively ship mid-April to me.
In June an official comic book adapation of the movie will come out.
I will get those in at that time too and I am suspecting cover price to be
$4 or $5 depending on thickness!
I am also going to try and get in stock all magazines this spring/summer
with POTA references. (Cinescape etc)
So if anyone is looking for any specific issues let me know and I'll try to
help out.
DARK HORSE EXTRA #34 oversized comic book with a POTA poster
advertising the new film
a Burton-PotA poster and preview of the Dark Horse comic
April 4 2001 is the due date.
Dark Horse Extra is a promo item dished out at comic shops to
showcase
some of their releases and comes in the form of a poster
folded down into 4 pages

Well Rory.
According to POTA "the land had shifted" so
there's really no telling where it is. The statue of liberty is "half buried"
and not cut in half.
From Conquest to Battle
costumes?
LOW BUGET. no money to make new
costumes.
Best,
Alex <.html <.html

I have nothing against popcorn crunchers at all. In fact I'd rather watch
one than all artsy fartsy angst films in all the repertory cinemas in the
world. But like Chris I expect more from an Ape film. I think I speak for a
large percentage of Apes fans when I say I'd like a bit of head scratching
with my popcorn please! <.html

.htmlI'm sure Fox will release all the TV stuff shortly. I don't think the
soundtracks are boots, "Film Score Monthly" is too well established, Fox is
gettin' something. I say a DVD of the original with a commentary track with
Heston, Linda Harrison AND Kim Hunter, while there's still time. Director's
cuts of "Conquest" and "Battle" with J. Lee commentary (he did a comment5ary
for "Guns of Navarone". - - - Jeff K.
