<<It's Sunday, "The Lone Gunmen" isn't doing it for me, and I've got work

You should have been watching "2001: A Space Odyessy" on Turner Classic
Movies or "Psycho" on American Movie Classics.
<<"You know in PLANET where Cornelius shows Taylor his map? Well, take a
good
look at the "dead sea," then find a map of the US that shows Chesapeake Bay
in Maryland and Virginia. Now turn the map so that the Atlantic Ocean is in
the south. What do you think?">>
I'm going to have to check that out...but it could be that the art directors
who were in charge of the map props for the first film were just a little
lazy!
<<The way the end of PLANET is shot, Taylor has to be riding north when he
finds the Statue of Liberty. So, the dead sea, the cornfield, Ape City, it's
all south and west of the Statue of Liberty. So, how come in BENEATH Brent
stumbles into Queensbourgh Plaza, which is east on New York City on Long
Island? Because of that I think there are some APES fans who think Ape City
is supposed to be on Long Island or in Connecticut, but I think it's more
probably in the Smokey Mountains someplace. This would have been a good
place for Caesar to take his people to hide in caves or something when the
bombs began to fall.
That, of course, would mean that the city in CONQUEST was part of a huge East
Coast megalopolis that would stretch from Boston to below Washington DC......
in 1991?!!!!!>>
I love reading this kind of stuff! Obviously, everyone on this list is aware
that the whole APES saga is full of continuity holes that would probably ruin
the films if one were to overthink them, but I like to hear the theories that
fans have to try to explain them all. It makes the overall concepts of the
film that much more enjoyable to me.
<<Alright, just one more thought. Can anyone explain to me how in BATTLE the
apes are wearing the same outfits they wear in PLANET? In 2000 years, give
or take a decade, the apes never changed their clothing style? (Just
another reason BATTLE is the silliest of the APES films, I think.)>>
Yeah, that bugs the hell out of me too! We can probably blame laziness and
lack of budget on that one. How cool would it have been to see the apes in
BATTLE dressed in outfits that had a look all their own.
<<Okay, that's "Enough of the Planet of the Apes." Everybody have a good
Monday. Those in the east (where PLANET took place), have a nice snow day
tomorrow, and also everyone remember that Wednesday is the day Arthur P.
Jacobs was born. Let's all tell Jeff to tell Natalie, "Happy Birthday to
Arthur.">>
Speaking of Natalie Trundy, was she ever in any other films besides the APES
ones?
Great post Rory!

Time to dig up the ol' tv videos I guess, and wait for a
character to yell "Sergeant!" to somebody on the show! Ken Taylor
or Mike W, can you help here?

Hey,
What do the big letters ("M," "V") on the front of some of the soldier
apes from the TV show mean? I am assuming that they designate rank.
Which letter goes with which rank?
One of the Medicom Soldier Apes has an "M" if someone doesn't know what
I'm talking about.
Thanks,
Matt

.htmlYes, March 7 is Arthur's birthday. Natalie likes to visit his grave on
certain occasions. It's not marked but she showed me where it is. He didn't
want a marker. Instead it's under a tree. Natalie played Jimmy Stewart's
daughter in "Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation" and her favorite role was in
Marlene Dietrich's "Monte Carlo Story" (she even sings!). Arthur met her on
that movie (he represented Marlene). For more credits, go to her website
www.natalietrundy.com .

I kept an eye on the weekend edition of
"Access Hollywood", hoping they would reshow the trailer so I could tape it.
They didn't, but they had a segment on the hot movie websites. There were the
official "Lord of the Rings", "Tomb Raider", etc. sites. But when they got to
"Apes", instead of spotlighting the official site, they talked about the fan
sites instead and how they were rocking. However, they only showed "The Visitor"
site (www.planetoapes.tripod.com
) . That site says they are also going to be featured in "Entertainment Weekly".
I don't know why they're getting all the press but anyway "Ape" fans in general
seem to be the successors to those of "Star Trek" and "Star Wars". We seem to be
getting noticed.

Okay group,
It's Sunday, "The Lone
Gunmen" isn't doing it for me, and I've got work tomorrow. So,
let me hear what some of you think of this theory of mine.
You know in PLANET where Cornelius shows Taylor his map?
Well, take a good look at the "dead sea," then find a
map of the US that shows Chesapeake Bay in Maryland and Virginia.
Now turn the map so that the Atlantic Ocean is in the south.
What do you think?
The way the end of PLANET is shot,
Taylor has to be riding north when he finds the Statue of Liberty.
So, the dead sea, the cornfield, Ape City, it's all south and west
of the Statue of Liberty. So, how come in BENEATH Brent stumbles into
Queensbourgh Plaza, which is east on New York City on Long Island?
Because of that I think there are some APES fans who think Ape City
is supposed to be on Long Island or in Connecticut, but I think it's more
probably in the Smokey Mountains someplace. This would have been a
good place for Caesar to take his people to hide in caves or something
when the bombs began to fall.
That, of course, would mean that the
city in CONQUEST was part of a huge East Coast megalopolis that would
stretch from Boston to below Washington DC...... in 1991?!!!!!
Alright, just one more thought. Can anyone explain to me how in
BATTLE the apes are wearing the same outfits they wear in PLANET?
In 2000 years, give or take a decade, the apes never changed

Ebay has some "Apes" promotional
items from Toy Fair ( a pendant, a button, a luggage tag) and a doll from the
Japanese rip-off "Time of the Apes". Interesting stuff.
Movie Headlines.net has some good
additions. A catalogue of upcoming collectibles, news that Del Rey will
republish Boulle's book on May 29 (the same book Natalie Trundy read almost 40
years ago and passed along to Arthur Jacobs), two Rick Baker interviews and two
reviews of the script (which make it sound better than I thought, though
neither liked the last act; perhaps the actual ending is M.I.A. to protect the
"surprise" ending). I'd be interested to hear if Alex agrees with those
opinions.

Okay, if Battle had not had so many things go wrong, would it still
have been a better movie?
Suppose they left the bomb subplot in;
Suppose the costumes were evolved versions of their slave clothes
(perhaps with bits of leather and/or armor added);
Suppose the mutants didn't look so much like Rat Patrol villains;
Suppose Aldo was not played like a petulant five year old (think
Ursus with a sword);
Suppose Don Murray and Hari Rhodes returned to play Breck and
MacDonald, rather than "the black man is the brother of my
predecessor's personal assistant . . ."
Could it have been good?
I'm really curious to read the original Dehn draft, where Caesar is

"Conquest" and "Battle" don't
necessarily take place in the same area as "Planet". I think the "Conquest"
novelization gives clues to where it is set. In my chronology I theorized that
Cornelius and Zira had time to talk to Armando about their civilization and may
have sketched such things as their clothing (of course, they had actual chimp
clothes to show him), their houses, etc. Later during Caesar's lonely childhood
(Armando was his only confidante since Caesar was supposed to be mute) he may
have been shown these sketches and was inspired byy them when designing his
society's clothes. He obviously had a fixation with his parents in
"Battle".
Yes, yes, the real reason behind the
clothes was they were there and saved on the budget. We all know Fox was milking
"Apes" for everything they could get, as they still are. But it's also fun to
fill in the gaps and putty up the contradictions.

.html .htmlOkay, I think we have something of a debate going on here!
Could someone please explain to me how CONQUEST and BATTLE take place on the
West Coast?
It makes no sense!! Look, in BATTLE you had the mutants, one of whom was
named Mendez, and they are the ancestors of the mutants in BENEATH. The
mutants in BENEATH lived in what was New York City. In the uncut version of
BATTLE they even show the Alpha-Omega Bomb.
So, if BATTLE is supposed to take place on the West Coast, how do the mutants
and their bomb end up in New York 2000 years later? What did they do, schlep
all the way across the country with a doomsday bomb?!!!!
Obviously, BATTLE takes place on the East Coast and the city shown destroyed
was part of a megalopolis that connected to what was once New York City. I
can believe the mutants dragging their bomb through the subways to finally
settle in beneath New York, but I can't believe they'd haul it all the way
across the country.
So then, if BATTLE takes place in the east, then it follows that CONQUEST had
to as well. It had to! And don't give me that "it says this or that" in
the novelization. Don't we have a hard enough time dealing with the
screenwriters' inconsistencies without bringing in the novelization writers?
Okay, so it's settled then, right? CONQUEST and BATTLE took place in the
East of the U.S., right? RIGHT?!!!

Hmmm.....I'm not sure. I guess I always assumed they took place somewhere on
the left coast because they followed ESCAPE and that film took place in
California. But Armando was in a traveling circus, so he could have been
anywhere during the events of CONQUEST.
<<It makes no sense!! Look, in BATTLE you had the mutants, one of whom was
named Mendez, and they are the ancestors of the mutants in BENEATH. The
mutants in BENEATH lived in what was New York City. In the uncut version of
BATTLE they even show the Alpha-Omega Bomb.>>
How do we know that the two Mendez characters were related? Just because two
people (or mutants) have the same last name doesn't mean they are related.
And the events in the uncut version of BATTLE do not mean a thing. They were
cut, so they are not canon. With that logic, Nova would have gotten pregnant
in the first film.
<<So, if BATTLE is supposed to take place on the West Coast, how do the
mutants
and their bomb end up in New York 2000 years later? What did they do, schlep
all the way across the country with a doomsday bomb?!!!!>>
Hmmmm....you're right.....transporting a doomsday bomb thousands of miles
across the country makes little sense, but I guess if that was the case, it
could be done in 2000 years time. Maybe they loaded it on to one of their
school buses and drove cross-country.
<<Obviously, BATTLE takes place on the East Coast and the city shown
destroyed
was part of a megalopolis that connected to what was once New York City. I
can believe the mutants dragging their bomb through the subways to finally
settle in beneath New York, but I can't believe they'd haul it all the way
across the country.>>
You make a strong case Rory. I will have to think about it a bit before I
adopt it into my own personal canon, but you have some valid points.

I don't recall what state Gov. Breck was the governor of. It could be

Judging from the apparent time spent traveling to the Forbidden Zone in the
first film it would have to be New York. The writer sure let the fans do all

looking at the map, though, it could also be the tri-state area. You got the
remains of LI, Connecticut & NY/NJ. It's possible the ANSA ship went down in
the LI Sound. I like the Chesapeake Bay point, because Linda H. is originally
from Berlin, Maryland. I'm not clear on how you determined Taylor was riding
north. But when you get right down to it, I guess you can say that POTA is
just a state of mind. It's here, it's there, it's everywhere (Pardon me,

talking about the "reimagining" (yes, he used that word) Gave the spiel about
approaching the mythology from another direction. He mentioned how he liked
having a "clear cut villian". Sounded like clips from a news conference.
Howard then mentioned how the original was about discrimination, about how
the apes were just as bad as man. But then he said that he has faith in Tim &
how he is looking forward to the new flick. I hope he has Tim & Estella on
the show come this summer. Go Apes, John <.html

I don't know about that - I'd say that the protest in Beneath (Vietnam), the
trail scene in the original (McCarthy and friends) and the Conquest finale
(Watts) were all pretty obvious to me - even from a reasonably young age.
I do admit however that the "hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil" (or

Well of course we're all agreed that the budget was the real reason. But for
continuity's sake, I've come up with my own theory...
Why bother to change the costumes? Perhaps they were practical. There are
only really two real dictators of clothing trends - practicality and
fashion. The apes had a design that worked, so they saw no need to change
it. Aesthetics, after all, is just SO human...
From a practical viewpoint, they were rebuilding civilisation from scratch -
they'd have more important things to create than new-look garments.
The apes had no need to change the clothing for any practical purpose, and
were not concerned with "fashion". Therefore the clothing design stayed.
The humans of course were still obsessed with fashion and over the course of
many centuries "regular" clothes gave way to rising hemlines and no sleeves.
The great apes Jorjio and Ahrmaani found "the human look" most distasteful.

I agree with everything you wrote, Rory. I've always thought that Conquest
and Battle took place in New York, although I suppose it could be somewhere
else in that area, and that the Ape City in Battle was the foundation of the
Ape City in the original film.
To me, assuming that they all took place in the same area just seems right.
It always has, so much so that I never really stopped to think about it.

Sure, but the point is that in Battle, all of a sudden they instantly
have clothes from the first film. After teh sort of clever color
coding of the slave clothes, they're instantly wearing the Morton
Haack designs from teh first film.

But chronologically speaking, that's precisely what they did. It
would have made more sense to hang rank insignia on the slave suits. <.html

.html .htmlYou'll get no argument from me that the TV series took place on the West
Coast. The show made that pretty obvious.
What's a bigger issue with me is should the TV show be considered a
continuation of the movie series. I argue that it should NOT!!!!
Both ape cultures, in the films and in the show, were similar, with the same
clothing and buildings, yet it is ridiculous to think that these two isolated
simian cultures, on opposite sides of a continent, would develop in such
similar fashion.
I think it's better to think of the TV show as "based" on the film series,
just as the cartoon show was "based" on the film series.
In fact, I'll say something even more controversial: As far as I'm concerned
the Charlton Heston movie "Planet of the Apes" had only ONE sequel, titled
"Beneath the Planet of the Apes." But "Beneath" had three sequels, "Escape,"
"Conquest" and "Battle."
First off it was the popularity of "Beneath" at the box office that brought
about further sequels, and in "Planet" the earth year was 3978, but in all
the other films it became 3955.
Okay, so give me an argument on that one.

Now I know for sure i didn't read the whole script

Simply because the surpise in this script is
clearly something that is seen in the trailer itself!
So that would be like showing the statue of liberty

I would say that this script I read is 90% correct
as all exclusives on this film have clearly shown, but something is missing
because again the surprise is in the trailer and that would clearly be
impossible.

.html Yes, almost all dvd's are letterboxed. There are a few that aren't for some
reason like most of the Stanley Kubrick collection and Transformers the movie
to name a few. Some of the dvd's have pan and scan on one side and
letterboxed on the other side of the disc.

.html .htmlT Zero (or whatever your name really is!) --
The DVD's of the Apes films are letterboxed ("Of course!" to quote a certain
doctor), however they are not anamorphic, or rather in the 16x9 widescreen TV
mode -- so skip getting the widescreen TV for now.
This was something of a stink when the APES DVD's came out. It seems the
discs were supposed to come out very shortly after the THX videocassettes and
laserdiscs were released in late '98, but they got held up. But Fox pressed
all the DVDs anyway. Then the anamorphic thing becomes big with the high-end
DVD/home theatre crowd, and all the studios jump on the bandwagon.
So, Fox releases these non-anamorphic but letterboxed APES discs, BUT in a
"limited edition." So, you know what that means: Fox will be revisiting the
Planet of the Apes classics in the future to remaster them for anamorphic
DVDs that all of us (i.e. suckers) will HAVE to buy all over again. This is
how it works in the land of home video -- the studios just keep selling you
the same movies over and over because there's always something new or extra
they find to add.
Well, with the original "Planet of the Apes" I don't really mind. When an
anamorphic transfer is done then I'm going to have to get a widescreen TV and
a progressive scan DVD player, but for now I'll just keep saving my money.
So, Lord T (or whatever your name is!), get the DVDs, because POTA looks and
sounds better than ever on them (and if you have the THX tapes and think
they're fine, you haven't seen anything until you see how clear and sharp
PLANET looks on DVD), but keep saving your money on that widescreen TV --
they're still too expensive and the prices will really begin to drop in about
another year, which hopefully is when Fox will remaster the originals and I
HOPE put a lot more extras on the discs this time, God Damn Them All To
Hell!!! Fox that is!

Sorry, I'm being facetiuos.
Speaking of which ( and this is an observation not a complaint), there's a shot
of William Windom from "Escape" in the CD booklet for the Conquest / Battle Cd
soundtrack. What's that about?

That's not William Windom in the booklet for CONQUEST/BATTLE CD, but John
Randolph the Chairman of the Presidential Commission in ESCAPE, and appeared
in a clip in CONQUEST. In real life he's a very old friend of Kim Hunter. I
believe they both live in New York.

And
while we're on the subject, could I please ask that any more speculation on the
surprise ending come with a WARNING in the subject area of the
emails?
After
guessing the twist in "The Sixth Sense" and wishing I had not, I would
rather not even know that there IS a surprise ending, let alone join in any
conversation about what it may be.
By the
time this movie is released this will probably be the only
mystery!!!
Anyone
wishing to know what the script contains as the surprise ending, please ask Alex
(in a private email).
Thanks
Michael
Corona's Coming
Attractions has an item today on a rumor that Fox has a casting call going
out for extras (men between the ages of 18-35, on the large side and having
to wear full body costumes) to film a scene with Mark Walburg at the Lincoln
Memorial in Washington DC on March 13th.
Could this be the surprise
ending for the film?
I
wouldn't hold my breath on that one.
Just another rumor type lie on the
web.
As it's been said before, it's not planet earth,
not even in a dream scene.

I originally thought all DVDs would be letterboxed until I discovered that
even old classics like "The Maltese Falcon" were originally filmed for TV
dimension screens!! What a shame!!!
But if it was filmed in wide, the DVD will have that version (and sometimes
the pan and scan too).
If you do not own a DVD player, GET ONE!!!!

I have them in both. But I rarely watch the pan and scans any more. It's
too televisiony. For a theater experiance I go for the letter box. I can't
wait for an affordable TV with the wide screen aspect ratio. Can any of you
folks with the latest technology tell me, are the DVDs letterboxed?

Still, even a shot of Felix Silla as a kid chimp would have been more
appropriate.

.html I'm waiting for the recordable discs Mike. That's the real appeal to me.
I just don't buy that many movies. I'd like to use that with a Tivo unit.
But yes, wide-screen wasn't around before the introduction of Cinemascope on
September 16, 1953, for The Robe.
If you've ever seen movies from before then in the theater you may have
noticed they don't fill the entire screen. The wide screen format was used
to induce people back to the theaters after the increased popularity of TV in
the 50s. It's tough to put bums in seats if they can watch movie at home for
free, even if they do stick commercials in every ten or fifteen minutes. But
enough film clas for today.
Here's an idea to help movie makers lure people back to theater in the
twenty-first century, when we have uncut movies available on cable, satellite
and prerecorded formats. Make better movies! Let's hope the new Apes
film is one of them. <.html

Hi all,
I don't normally promote unliscenced APES items, but for those who are
interested, check out this site. I have the Cornelius kit which was sent
to me as a gift from a friend. It's pretty cool. Have a look around the
site. They also do some other fun stuff.
Not so much an accurate representation of the character, more of a
characature.

The storylines for the five films will inevitably be a dramaturgical Swiss

Just think, if it were nice and tidy, we'd have nothing to go on about.
Plus, the Haslein talk in Escape sort of explains everything tidily:
Just take an interesting slice from the time-space continuum, and make a
film.
There is enough space in the multiverse for just about anything....
