.html .htmlNo, I'm not talking about Alex's picture. (Just kidding, Alex.)
Actually, I want to tell everyone a little of a three hour phone conversation
I had last night with Joe Russo. He's the guy who has a book coming out this
June titled "Planet of the Apes Revisited" on the making of the entire series.
Way back in the mid-seventies when we were kids, Joe and I used to correspond
about POTA. (Yes, we were pen-pals!) I sent him copies of the movie's
soundtracks I'd taped off the TV (This was before VCRs folks.) and Topps
bubble gum cards.
Anyway, we eventually lost touch but Joe pursued his POTA obbsession to the
extent that he interviewed nearly everyone involved with the films and even
visited Arthur P. Jacobs house before Natalie Trundy sold it in the
mid-eighties. It was cool to hear him tell me about being in Jacob's private
home theatre and in the vault were Jacobs kept his personal film collection
(including, Joe told me, a box with the label on it "King Kong outakes"!!!
Jacobs loved "King Kong."). He also read for me some of Jacobs' inter-office
memos during the making of each film, along with the shooting schedules.
This is all stuff he photo-copied while visiting Natalie Trundy. Most of it
is fascinating, especially about what certain people thought should be
altered or cut in each film. How much of this will make it into the book I
don't know.
The best part was when he played for me some of the tape recordings he has
from all the interviews he's conducted with everyone from Mort Abrahams and
Ted Post to Charlton Heston and Roddy McDowall. An especially cool one was
James Gregory telling about being made up as Ursus in the scene with the ape
army in the desert watching the mutants' illusions, and Gregory looking over
to see Maurice Evans falling off his horse.
I told Joe he has to get these interviews transfered to CD soon -- they're
like having a DVD commentary track. After his book comes out I think I might
try to talk him into selling copies of these things.
Anyway, I think this will be THE book to buy when it comes out. If you want
to ask Joe Russo anything about his book, or think you might have something
to contribute (while there's time) he can be reached at the e-mail address:

.html Wow! That sounds like a great book. I will definately have to check that out
when the time comes.
I would love to hear the audio as well! I'm sure there's some fascinating
stories there.
Thanks for sharing Rory!

Now see, this is exactly what I'm talking about. This is why fans should be
doing the DVDs instead of Fox. Then WE'd have something worth buying,
instead of making them rich by picking up every piece of crap they sling us.
How's that for an ape metaphor? <.html

In the new film of POTA, the human slaves
are branded with a mark, sort of what we would do to cattle. If you wait
long enough you'll find out what that mark looks like.
Just wait until the film is
release.
There is a lot more to that MARK but I'll
let you wait until you see the movie. The mark can be used in a form of a
bobwire around your arm.
As is the popular type of tattoos these
days.
Not that I would do it, do it's an Idea.
And a tempting one at that, if it's the same mark that runs down the left side
of my page in the remake section.
The image linking with one another looks
really good!
But I'm still a vergin in the tattoo world,
so I think I'm going to remain that way. (Unless I really go APE one
day)
Best,
Alex <.html <.html

I would like to get to this next month if I can
find the time.
I am missing 1 issue out of the run and need to
find it to make this complete!
My long term plan for a f uture issue of ape chronicles is a complete
breakdown of all 139 POTA UK comics with contents and descriptions and cross
reference to the US series

.html Today was a great Ape Day for me. I got some more Medicoms (Caesar, Caesar
Battle Variant, Land Ape, Land Ape Variant, Astronaut Taylor and Cornelius).
I love these figures. The only one I am not crazy about is Taylor. He seems a
bit too tall and the likeness is not exact (he seems a bit cross eyed). I
thought the other one was too tall as well. Oh well, the damn dirty apes are
excellent!
I also received a Planet of the Apes Archives Trading Card Set that I won off
of ebay. This is very cool too. There's a lot of pictures I've never seen
before. Damn, I wish the DVDs would have been packed with some of this cut
footage (the extended Taylor chase scene, the Nova pregnancy scene, the
violent stuff from CONQUEST and BATTLE).
What a great day!

Don't damn your wallet just yet! MEDICOM just released the

"The Greatest Ape" (Lawgiver Statue),
"Ape-o-naut Cornelius", and

Brace yourself for MEDICOM rehab!!!

I've got to say I think it would be pretty cool. I know someone who is in
the process of getting the cover of an old Batman comic tattooed on his
arm - at the moment he's got the Joker coloured and an outline of Batman
tied to a giant candle, waiting to be coloured - and it looks terrific. I'd
do it myself but I'm a skinny sod and there wouldn't be enough room on my
arms for a tattoo.
Anyway, for suggestions - I'd like either an Ursus in "I Want You" pose, or
else perhaps a nice illustration from one of the old mags - Ploog perhaps.

Also, the latest issue of Vanity Fair has some shots from the Burton POTA

I was under the impression that they were Japanese, rather than British
(although I see a lot of British sellers flogging them on e-bay so I'm
probably wrong). I have to say that from the pictures I've seen of them,
they are the most bizarre looking toys I've ever seen. Even the Marvel mag
never went this psychedelic. Really weird. The heads are like PotA
characters but the costumes are totally bizarre multi-coloured efforts with
all sorts of weird bits and pieces (some of the helmets they wear... jings).
They also look like the sort of dodgy unlicenced toys you'd find in a market
somewhere ("ooh, look, it's Luke Skytrekker from Space Wars!" etc.).

.htmlOH YEAH ! An audio commentary with this sort of material
would be a major coup. Actually, any sort of bonus stuff
would be an improvement.
Ok, the "Behind" documentary was great but, there's
so much more sitting in the vaults - foreign poster images,
featurettes, deleted scenes, alternate takes, the original
test reel in its entirety, ( HEY - and maybe a whole whack
of Alex's music video's ) that FOX couldn't be bothered
adding to the DVDs.
And lets have the TV Series, the cartoon, and extended versions
of Conquest and Battle while we're at it...
The James Bond fan clubs actively participated with MGM on the
007 disks and the results were just outstanding. Documentaries for
every movie, rare material from private collectors, hours of new
interviews with just about every surviving participant, two audio
commentary tracks in some cases, deleted scenes, music videos for
the later songs - the making of the MTV video in one case !
and on and on..
Then maybe we wouldn't need a silly menu option for bonus materials
that leads us to only ONE option, which is to play the same 5 trailers
already imbedded on all the other disks..sigh..
Geez, I feel better now. Can't wait for Joe's book though.

I believe the POTA TV series was shot at the Malibu Fox Ranch, now Malibu
Creek State Park, and at the Twentieth Century Fox Studios on West Pico Blvd.
The ruined city exteriors of "The Trap" and The Legacy" were shot on the
studio lot on the "Hello Dolly" New York street set. Many of the sets for
"Hello Dolly" were redressed in used in BENEATH, too. The New York street
set is still standing at Fox and is used for the TV show "NYPD Blue," in fact
I read that "NYPD Blue"'s interior sets are on Stage Nine at Fox and that's
the same stage PLANET was shot on.

yeah Alan,
They do look like something you'd see in a $2 shop. Interesting though
that who ever made them is dramatically too far off the look of the costumes
for the new movie. Well, the Medieval influence anyhow. They seemed to
have prematurely jumped the band wagon.
Back in the '70's there were a couple of Mego style knock offs produced.
One series called either "Astro Apes" or "Space Apes" ( Michael, can you
confirm?) and another called "Action Apeman" which were made by AHI who
actually had the official licence to make APE products but couldn't make
action figures because of the existing Mego deal. These guys show up on
Ebay fairly regularly. See pics below.

Yeah, the transfer of "How The West Was Won" bothers me, but that old
Cinerama process had lots of problems. The different strips of film need to
be perfectly color matched, and it only looks "right" on a curved Cinerama

I'm glad POTA wasn't shot that way.

Interview with non other than Charlton
Heston!
They were showing trailer clips while announcing
it, so it's possible their holding out until the premier of the
showing.
Heston just finished his cameo shots for the film
so it could be that their going to show him on set and possibly in makeup.
Don't miss it!

Hmmm... no doubt there is going to be a lot of Ape books published to cash
in on the new film (I see PotA Revisited has been announced... again) but I
always have my doubts about the ones calling themselves "unofficial
companions" or something similar. More often than not, they're full of
pictures that are either common or amateur, and full of information
available elsewhere (not to mention often poorly researched).
Still, hopefully some good should come of it too. I like the sound of the
"Legend of the Planet of the Apes" one, and PotA Revisited should hopefully
be quite good if it ever appears.

Hey Matt,
Welcome to the list! And a Michigander at that! Me, too....well I was, I'm in Florida now, but I was in the Livonia/Westland area.
Matt says...
>Here's my fun theory about the ultimate fate of Virdon and Burke: I think

>the virus from Earth that killed all the dogs and cats!
I liked this theory..the only problem is, did you see the condition of the ship? There is no way they could have fixed that on their own and flew back...I was thinking about the ship 'that landed almost 10 years before' that Zaius was talking about. He stated that he had one killed, how many more survived? And did the apes find the ship?
*Lynne*
P.S. And what about this homing beacon that Jones died to activate? See, if he hadn't been leaning forward when the ship hit the time-warp, he wouldn't have broken his neck, right? Maybe a little guilt on Virdon's part in the first episode when he finds out Jones is dead? Anyway, why is it still active? They homed in on something! Was it automatic after all those years? <.html <.html

So what was with that dog running around in the first scene of the
first episode? Also, you'd think if they knew about future ape rule,
Virdon and Burke would have hunted down lil Caesar themselves,
Starsky and Hutch style, in the late 70s/early 80s . . . <.html

Oh, Man, does this bring back memories!! He was very famous in the Detroit area! And whenerer he'd come on I'd take pride that he was in Escape. I knew I didn't read the whole script!
This script that I read has a Happily Ever
After type ending, (nothing to really leave the viewer thinking in the end)
No doutb a decoy ending. With the real ending written on a separate (lucas type)
TOP SECRET script.
Most excellent!
Because my thoughts at the end of this script were,
WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL?
Truth be told I liked 90% of the script, but the
ending kind of left me feeling a little puzzled. Kind of like, DAMN THIS ENDING
REALLY SUCKED! :o)

| Subject: New POTA call sheet (minor spoilers) |
|
.html .htmlI got a call sheet from the new POTA movie off eBay a couple weeks back, and
I thought I'd share with everyone here some of the things it says on it --
especially since postings have been so light lately.
I bought a call sheet from Thursday, February 8th, 2001. I wanted that date
because the original premiered on that day in New York in 1968, thirty-three
years ago.
According to this sheet February 8th was day 59 of 79 shooting days (I think
the original was shot in 49 days.). This call sheet was from the Ridgecrest
Production Office, Ridgecrest, California for the Trona Pinnacle location.
Everyone was to arrive on set at 6:15 AM for a 7:15 shooting call. Sunrise
for the day was 6:43AM, sunset 5:24PM. The weather was mostly sunny, cloud
cover 30% or less, no rain was expected, highs in the mid to upper 50's,
5-15MPH winds.
Mark Wahlburg had a 6:30AM make-up call, but Tim Roth and Michael Clarke
Duncan each had 4:15AM make-up calls. Paul Giamatti's was for 3:45AM, and
Estella Warren's was 5:15, but worst of all was Helen Bonham Carter who had
to be in make-up at 3:30AM. I think I've read that her's takes longest
because she has to be a pretty chimpanzee. (By the way, there's a note that
"Crew Members Must Not Interface With Chimps" -- whatever that means) There
were also around three dozen stunt people that day, equally playing either
humans, chimps or gorillas. Some chimps and gorillas had 4:15AM make-up
calls, while others only 6:15, so I guess the earlier ones wore appliances
and the later ones just masks.
The scenes shot that day were (if all went as planned):
EXT. CALIMA-FRONT OF RUINS-W/POD-POS
Attar kneels at Krull's grave. Ari mourns. Leo holding Pericles, says
goodbye to Ari.
EXT. CALIMA-FRONT OF RUINS-DUST
Limbo saves Leo, Thade attacks Leo. A sound. Dot seen-pod lands. Apes and
humans react. Pericles hops out, hugs Leo. Apes flee. Thade attacks Leo.
Fight #1.
EXT. CALIMA-FRONT OF RUINS W/POD
Leo runs to pod, says goodbye to Limbo and Daena. Leo gets in pod and closes
hatch. Group watches cruiser rise and take off.
EXT. CALIMA_THE PLAINS OR CLIFFS
Birn on horse, watches cruiser rise and take off.
This Pericles mentioned is played by a real chimp because the call sheet
mentions "Chimp Animal Trainers: Pericles and Twin, Chimp Trainers, Pericles
gives thumbs up, Pericles scampers into Leo's arms."
The sheet also mentions that whatever they didn't get that day they'd finish
on Friday, then on Saturday travel back to LA - scout Vasquez Rocks and Sun
Valley (Quarry). This is interesting because a brief part of BENEATH was
shot at Vasquez Rocks -- the scene where Brent fights the gorilla on the
wagon.
It goes on to say that on Monday interiors would be shot in the Los Angeles
Center Stages, Stage #3.
INT. THADE'S TENT
Ari asks Thade to let humans live. Thade brands Ari. Krull storms in.
INT. APE'S RIVER CAMP-TENT
Attar prays, tent lit up by flame.
Well, there's a lot more on this thing but I've written enough.

Alex,
Very nice! It must have caught me in a weak spot, because I like it
better that the actual trailer and it is making the anticipation grow
stronger!
Thanks,
*Lynne*
Thanks Lynne.
I only wish I had more to work with, but I know it's only a matter of
time.

How did I find out?
Don't ask.
But never the less this film is going to be a major

.htmlHi All
For those of you who do not want to fumble through eBay to find the new
wave, here are all 3 (unlike Alex, mine are still packaged!). This shows
the difference in size:
http://users.cyberone.com.au/whitty/Medicomlastwave.jpg
Also, this is a comparison between the standard Caesar and the limited
edition version. Fairly obvious difference between "Conquest" Caesar in
chains (common) and Limited Edition "Battle" Caesar dressed just like Pa
(all but the missing Glyph...).

And finally, this is a comparison between the standard Caesar Land's Ape and
the limited edition version. The Chimp at left is the common version and
the gorilla at right is the rare one. Neither has a chain but each has a
different rifle.

Hope this clears any confusion. Hats off to the chaps at Medicom for a
GREAT effort!

Hi Mike,
Thanx for the heads-up! I can see myself getting at least a
dozen of those Lawgivers!!! Hoowee!
Hey, does your Conquest Gorilla have an orange or a red jumpsuit?
Mine is kindof orange/brown.

Thanks for the pics, Michael. Only quibble is that by all accounts, the
CHIMP slave is the rare one. Which is good, because getting multiple
gorillas will be that much easier . . . <.html
