Hi
Brian
Interesting qusestion - now you mention it I must agree my Gorilla has
more of a orange/brown jumpsuit, but I believe it is trying to be red.......I
wonder why?
I
could not work out what was going on with the variants - mainly because of the
unusual choice to nam a "Slave Ape" a "Caesar Land's
Ape". I alsofind it amazing they did not just refer to the Lawgiver
as such - rather than "Greatest Ape". I wonder if the
"Statue of Liberty" is "Greatest Human"?
:)
I
discussed this with Ken Taylor recently and we are wondering if there is an
English Translation issue here. Anyone in the group know? I will be
asking this question to my friend in Japan.
Michael
Hey, does your Conquest Gorilla have an orange or a red jumpsuit?
Mine is kindof orange/brown.

Also, this is a comparison between the standard Caesar and the limited

Caesar in chains (common) and Limited Edition "Battle" Caesar
dressed just like Pa (all but the missing Glyph...).

And finally, this is a comparison between the standard Caesar Land's Ape
and the limited edition version. The Chimp at left is the common
version and the gorilla at right is the rare one. Neither has a
chain but each has a different rifle.

Hope this clears any confusion. Hats off to the chaps at Medicom

.htmlHi Phil
Thanks for picking this up -you are quite right.
As I mentioned before I really am confused by this wave - it really is a
mystery why such completely different characters should be called a variant.
I mean, fair enough to call the Cornelius with a BROWN suit in the first (or
second?) wave a variant (although it did not have a sticker to identify it
as a variant like the Soldier Ape did). The soldier ape just had a
different head and gun.
But these fellas are COMPLETELY different. Variant Caesar is just a
completely different figure. Variant Caesar Land's Ape is a different
species!
I originally thought there were 2 variant Caesars (ie I thought the variant
Caesar Land's Ape was an additional Caesar variant). How very confusing.
I am going to re-post the Medicom email accurately now!

Which is good, because getting multiple

Not only is Rick Baker up for an Oscar that night
for makeup on The Grinch, but if FOX plays it's cards right there maybe a POTA

If Rick wins it will be another great clip for my

Hi Mike and Group,
I just returned from a trip up to Portland Oregon, where (while in
town) I dropped in on Mr. Katsu Tanaka of Just Be Toys <http://www.justbetoys.com>.
They've got the new Medicoms in (Milo & Cornelius APE-O-Nauts, and
Lawgiver) and the prices are resonable: $35.99 & 37.99.
The Lawgiver is very good but is lacking the base that the original
has. Simple enough to make one. The color is also a bit off.
More of an olive drab than a sandstone finish.
Now I just need to find one of those Hot Wheels Escape from New York
statues of liberty and my set's complete!

I could not work
out what was going on with the variants - mainly because of the unusual
choice to nam a "Slave Ape" a "Caesar Land's Ape". I alsofind it
amazing they did not just refer to the Lawgiver as such - rather than "Greatest

This shows
the difference in size:

Also, this is a comparison between the standard Caesar and the limited
edition version. Fairly obvious difference between "Conquest" Caesar
in
chains (common) and Limited Edition "Battle" Caesar dressed just like

And finally, this is a comparison between the standard Caesar Land's

the limited edition version. The Chimp at left is the common

the gorilla at right is the rare one. Neither has a chain but
each has a
different rifle.

Hope this clears any confusion. Hats off to the chaps at Medicom

.html .htmlTV Guide this week has an article "The 50 Greatest Movie Moments of All
Time." Now of course the ending of 'you-know-what' should rank right up
there, but no it doesn't make the offical list. Instead it's mentioned, with
the Statue of Liberty final pictured, in a sidebar "Gotcha! A Brief History
of Surprising Scenes and Tricky Endings."
Oh well, what can you expect from TV Guide. At least they now give PLANET
four stars when it's in the listings.
By the way, they rate the beginning of "Saving Private Ryan" as the Number
One movie moment. Pleeeeeeeease. I'd rate the ending of "Citizen Kane."
PLANET's final in the top ten someplace, maybe top five.

Boulle version was that the Astronaut really did go

Apes ruling the planet earth.

Time Machine Collectibles has a lot of autographs of POTA related actors on

Coleman, Ron Harper, Lou Wagner, the guy who played Julius and several of the
actors who played mutants in BENEATH. While these are kind of cool, I'm not
sure if I will be collecting too many of them.
I was wondering how many people here collect POTA autographs? Has anyone been
lucky enough to meet the stars in person? Were they some of the actors
mentioned above? How about the "big guns" like Heston, Kim Hunter and the
late, great Roddy McDowell. Does anyone have autographs from the dearly

one autograph of Roddy McDowall I purchased off ebay recently. I also have
autographs from Kim Hunter, James Gregory, and Charlton Heston. I wrote to
them and sent Apes pictures and they autographed the pictures and sent them
back to me. I am probably going to order some autographs from Time Machine as
I am sure they are all authentic. If you would like addresses to write and

every actors address and it will tell you how long it takes to get the

Hi Matt,
All of the original surviving POTA performers are very nice about
signing photos and autographs. James Gregory's health is not that
great and I had heard that he was no longer signing ape items, but Terry
Martin over at Time Machine Collectibles seems to keep getting him to sign
stuff. Good ol' Terry!
I'd be careful about Roddy McDowall autographs on eBay. Fakes
abound! There is one seller in particular (from Daly City, California)
that repeatedly tries to auction fakes a few times a year. Either
his source is "screwing" him over by selling him the fakes, or he's faking
them himself, and faking them poorly. He had a photo up last year
with a fake Roddy signature, and, get this, the photo was of Kim Hunter
as Zira! I think Roddy would've known better than to autograph photos
of other performers, especially POTA characters. And I'm sure he
was rolling over in his grave when he saw that this clown was getting $100+
per foto of eBay. And they were FAKES!!! Buyer beware!
We here at Apemania.com also are more than happy to authenticate
POTA autographs. One of our troupe members was a close friend of
Mr. McDowall, and Roddy signed many things to him and the rest of the Apemania
troupe over the years.
Jeff Ceterko is a great source for POTA autographs. I'll have
to look up his e-mail address from work tomorrow. Many of the signatures
he has he acquired himself, and he has photos of himself with the stars
to prove it. He's one of the most honest autograph hounds I've ever
met. He's always willing to authenticate signatures, and not just
Ape actors.
POTA WEBGROUP memeber Loc <locutusatwolf359@...> sounds like
a good source for authentication as well.
Anyway! Again, be careful. An honest dealer will offer
a money back guarantee, no questions asked. Beware those that have
an "all sales final" attitude.
Good Luck!

Indeed, but since we're talking about Pierre Boulle anyway, I'd just like to
bring up the books "Genus Homo" and "Across Time", both of which may have
inspired Boulle's original novel. Have any of you lot read either of these?

Yep, and just check out several episodes of The Twilight Zone to see where
he tested it out first! Not literally the Statue of Liberty, but there were
plenty of "oh, all along it was..." episodes. Of particular interest is "I
Shot An Arrow Into The Air". Three astronauts trying to return to Earth
crash on a hostile desert planet - I won't tell you how it turns out, I
don't want to spoil the ending... :)

Do you mean the kind of "framing sequence" (I think that's what you'd call
it) with Phylis and Jinn? If so, I agree, it would be hard to get that into
a film without people guessing it straight away. The penultimate twist, as
previously mentioned in this discussion, was excellent too.

I love Kamandi too - I picked up a few issues in a sale recently - but it is
very definitely Ape-inspired, and does not predate Apes. Kamandi #1 is dated
Oct/Nov 1972.
Wacky comic indeed, but worth seeking out. Very enjoyable. (If you're one of
the people who don't like the Marvel mag's PotA stories because they were
too bizarre, it's probably better that you don't. Kamandi featured all sorts
of talking animals, not just apes, along with robots, aliens, mutants, etc.)

There's a comic book (I think it's
one of the Adventure titles) that shows Mendez leaving the mutants. If we assume
he's a descendant of the "Battle" Mendez, then that would cut off the line and
we assume "Beneath" is in an opposite timeline. Since the bomb scenes were not
in the released version of "Battle", one could also consider the bomb not part
of the official "Battle" canon. It's all how you look at it. - - - Jeff
Krueger
P.S. : The
Marvel mag chronology has the mutants doing exactly that, schlepping the bomb
from the West Coast to the East Coast, over an extended period of
time.

Okay, I think we have something of a
debate going on here!
Could someone please explain to me how CONQUEST
and BATTLE take place on the West Coast?
It makes no sense!!
Look, in BATTLE you had the mutants, one of whom was named Mendez,
and they are the ancestors of the mutants in BENEATH. The mutants in
BENEATH lived in what was New York City. In the uncut version of
BATTLE they even show the Alpha-Omega Bomb.
So, if BATTLE is
supposed to take place on the West Coast, how do the mutants and their
bomb end up in New York 2000 years later? What did they do, schlep
all the way across the country with a doomsday bomb?!!!!
Obviously, BATTLE takes place on the East Coast and the city shown
destroyed was part of a megalopolis that connected to what was once New
York City. I can believe the mutants dragging their bomb through the
subways to finally settle in beneath New York, but I can't believe they'd
haul it all the way across the country.
So then, if BATTLE takes
place in the east, then it follows that CONQUEST had to as well.
It had to! And don't give me that "it says this or
that" in the novelization. Don't we have a hard enough time dealing
with the screenwriters' inconsistencies without bringing in the
novelization writers?
Okay, so it's settled then, right?
CONQUEST and BATTLE took place in the East of the U.S., right?
RIGHT?!!!

You'll get no argument from me that the TV
series took place on the West Coast. The show made that pretty
obvious.
What's a bigger issue with me is should the TV show be
considered a continuation of the movie series. I argue that it
should NOT!!!!
Both ape cultures, in the films and in the show, were
similar, with the same clothing and buildings, yet it is ridiculous to
think that these two isolated simian cultures, on opposite sides of a
continent, would develop in such similar fashion.
I think it's
better to think of the TV show as "based" on the film series, just as the
cartoon show was "based" on the film series.
In fact, I'll say
something even more controversial: As far as I'm concerned the
Charlton Heston movie "Planet of the Apes" had only ONE sequel, titled
"Beneath the Planet of the Apes." But "Beneath" had three sequels,
"Escape," "Conquest" and "Battle." First off it was the popularity of
"Beneath" at the box office that brought about further sequels, and in
"Planet" the earth year was 3978, but in all the other films it became
3955.
Okay, so give me an argument on that one.

I'd also change the star they go to. A red giant like Betelguese isn't

No, I'm not talking about Alex's picture.
(Just kidding, Alex.)
Actually, I want to tell everyone a little
of a three hour phone conversation I had last night with Joe Russo.
He's the guy who has a book coming out this June titled "Planet of
the Apes Revisited" on the making of the entire series.
Way back in
the mid-seventies when we were kids, Joe and I used to correspond about
POTA. (Yes, we were pen-pals!) I sent him copies of the movie's
soundtracks I'd taped off the TV (This was before VCRs folks.) and Topps
bubble gum cards.
Anyway, we eventually lost touch but Joe pursued
his POTA obbsession to the extent that he interviewed nearly everyone
involved with the films and even visited Arthur P. Jacobs house before
Natalie Trundy sold it in the mid-eighties. It was cool to hear him
tell me about being in Jacob's private home theatre and in the vault were
Jacobs kept his personal film collection (including, Joe told me, a box
with the label on it "King Kong outakes"!!! Jacobs loved
"King Kong."). He also read for me some of Jacobs' inter-office
memos during the making of each film, along with the shooting schedules.
This is all stuff he photo-copied while visiting Natalie Trundy.
Most of it is fascinating, especially about what certain people
thought should be altered or cut in each film. How much of this will
make it into the book I don't know.
The best part was when he
played for me some of the tape recordings he has from all the interviews
he's conducted with everyone from Mort Abrahams and Ted Post to Charlton
Heston and Roddy McDowall. An especially cool one was James Gregory
telling about being made up as Ursus in the scene with the ape army in the
desert watching the mutants' illusions, and Gregory looking over to see
Maurice Evans falling off his horse.
I told Joe he has to get these
interviews transfered to CD soon -- they're like having a DVD commentary
track. After his book comes out I think I might try to talk him into
selling copies of these things.
Anyway, I think this will be THE book
to buy when it comes out. If you want to ask Joe Russo anything
about his book, or think you might have something to contribute (while
there's time) he can be reached at the e-mail address:

.html
.html
A U.S. space station (genetic monkey zoo)
encounters a time rip in space. They send out a monkey to encounter the
time rip. Monkey gets lost in the time rip. Leo Davidson goes after him, he also
gets lost in the time rip only to find himself on a planet dominated by
apes.
In the end he finds that the U.S. space station
(Half buried ship in the desert) goes looking for him after he is reported
missing, and thus crash lands on the planet centuries before him. So Leo of
course finds himself on a planet of the apes that is NOT earth. And while Leo's
ship is destoyed on his arrival, the monkey who first got lost in the time rip
ends up arriving at the very end of the film.
And so Leo uses his ship to return home while the
monkey remains with his own kind and the humans living as equals with apes on
the real planet of the apes.
Happy ending Bla Bla Bla (Sucks)
END OF SCRIPT....
Secret Ending....
Leo returns to earth to find the earth dominated by
apes, with a famous earth memorial baring the image of the monkey's face who
first got lost in the time rip and returned to the real planet of the
apes.
Now how this monkey effected earth is the real
MYSTERY!!!
And that I'm affraid no one will know until the
film is finally released....
And thus, because of this, a sequal is
born!
Planet of the Apes on EARTH!
KICK ASS!
Best,

I don't know about that, but you maybe on to something. Perhaps not though.
After all the versions of Hitchhikers Guide I found the pacing on the
television show a bit rushed when compared to the tape dramatization. I
understand they're limited by time and budget constraints. It'll be
interesting to see what they do with that movie. It'll be hard to accept
someone other than Mark Wing-Davies as Zaphod. <.html

cheaper. Same with video. If I love a movie I'll get the DVD for the extras
and the multiple watches, but I wouldn't mind a copy of, say ... OK, how
about this one... I'd like a letterbox copy of "Edward Scissorhands" because
Burton is directing "Apes". VHS is going for about $15 now for new
releases. But if I want it letterboxed I have to pay $10 more for the DVD.
OK, bad example, I can just rent the DVD for $2. But if I want it to just
throw in whenever, I can have far more of those on VHS. But letterbox on VHS
is drying up. They assume the general public are barbarians who don't want
letterbox. You have better chance of getting letterbox on cable TV. And
speaking of letterbox, the price of postage is just outrageous! - - - -

I already called Tim. The police
are on their way, Alex.
OK, here's the deal. A friend of
mine whose in tight with one of the "Apes" producers told me principal
photography is done but they have an EXTENSIVE 2nd Unit shoot to do, which will
last into April. Basically they had to split into two units to film it all. Alot
of this stuff deals with the principal actors. It's conceivable with all the
internet activity that they come up with a new ending and film it at the last
minute. I also hear bad weather hurt their Arizona shoot and they're going to
film alot of desert stuff here in California (Vasquez Rocks,
anyone?).
Because of the upcoming strikes,
actors are doubling up on work; Wahlberg has a remake of "Charade" (a Natalie
Trundy favorite, the original) and Duncan has "Scorpion King". Everyone's
running every which way so the did the important stuff first but filming ain't
over yet. - - - Jeff Krueger

While it would be terrific if Kim Hunter is at the Nashville show, my
guess, is that there's probably an even money chance, that she won't be
able to make it.
Scuttlebutt in New York is that as much as she may want to do shows,
ultimately--for whatever reasons, she has to cancel out (which has
happened, on at least one occasion).
Last year, I was acting in a play, at the annual Old-Time Radio
Festival. I came back, to the event, Saturday--primarily!--to be
introduced to Ms. Hunter.
But she had cancelled out...
None of this means, of course, that Kim Hunter is anything but a
terrific person. (There've been many nice posts here, already, about
how cooperative she has been, answering fan mail, and the like.)
But large get-togethers aren't, intriguingly, every actor's cup of tea.
Of course--hopefully!--she will be there...

It was brought to my attention an

3/11/01 that rated recent movie trailers. Namely, "Apes" (rated A-), Spielberg's
"A.I." (rated C), "Pluto Nash", an Eddie Murphy space comedy (B-) and "Harry
Potter" (C). Yes, "Apes" got by far the best grade. It also had 4 images from
the trailer . It said, in part, ..." glimpses of good things to come...Wahlberg,
master of the "How did I get myself into this mess?" look, seems a good fit..."

TV Guide this week has an article "The 50
Greatest Movie Moments of All Time." Now of course the ending of
'you-know-what' should rank right up there, but no it doesn't make the
offical list. Instead it's mentioned, with the Statue of Liberty
final pictured, in a sidebar "Gotcha! A Brief History of
Surprising Scenes and Tricky Endings."
Oh well, what can you expect
from TV Guide. At least they now give PLANET four stars when it's in
the listings.
By the way, they rate the beginning of "Saving Private
Ryan" as the Number One movie moment. Pleeeeeeeease.
I'd rate the ending of "Citizen Kane."
PLANET's final in the top ten someplace, maybe top five.

Jacobs was a successful publicist,
for himself as well as others. He took credit for the Statue but it's been
authenticated by Eric Greene and others that it was Serling's idea. He also took
credit for findig the novel but Natalie Trundy says that's hogwash, she
found it. And she said so on stage at the "Apes" 30th party with pretty
much everybody from the films in attendance. But credit Jacobs as the single
person most responsible that "Apes" is more than just an obscure French novel

Ok, but doesn't it look like Scott?
I think Alex would like Scott's legs better, don't you? - - -

Giver!!
Hi Jeff,
I thought it was Alex's girlfriend at first , but then I realized
it was actually our webmaster, Ray, over
here at theAPEMANIA studio, posing in front of a statue that was built for a
client in Japan. Ray's not related to Scott, at least that's what the
two of them claim.

I was very impressed with the Harry Potter trailer. I am a fan of the books
and have been nervous about this flick ever since I learned that Chris
Columbus was going to do it. I am not a big Columbus fan and was worried he
would "Macauley" up this wonderful story. I like the look of the trailer. The
characters look dead on. Hopefully the kids can act. Hopefully Columbus can
direct. It shouldn't be forgotten that this will be a kids, picture....and
that's fine. That is who the books are intended for. As long as it stays
close to the source material and doesn't rely on slapstick and other corny
Hollywood tricks, it should be fine. I am excited about it.
Not as excited as I am about POTA, but still excited nonetheless.

.htmlIt should be noted that the author of the article hasn't read any "Harry
Potter" books.
