    Dear UK pota apes,

I love to get my hands on one of those medicoms. Trouble is, I don't have a
credit card - Don't believe in them. Would anyone uk based want to help
this lawgiver-less one out? I can of course pay by cheque, and am willing to
pay a little extra for the trouble.

    any takers?

I think they both look great, but if I had a choice I would chose the japanese poster over the U.S. poster. The Japanese have always had a great talent for creating  better posters than the U.S.

Just look at their line of Original POTA posters.

They look great, showing a whole lot of images from the film.

Japanese posters always spelled on thing - REAL ACTION.

    Best,

What I like most about the revist is the fact that the revist has a more complex storyline than the original. In the original storyline is pretty basic: nuclear war - apes dominate the earth. But with it's shocking ending of the staute of liberty is will remain the greatest movie shocker of all time in my book.

While the revisit storyline is a much more complex storyline the ending is not as shocking but will give the viewer more food for thought. As the real threat in today's world is the threat of genetic engineering, and what it could lead too.

.htmlHuman genetic re-engineering of Chimpanzee, Gorilla, and Orangutan genes to
make them have more human-like brains, larynx and tongue, and upright posture
is the ONLY explanation for the apes in the original series or the new film.
It's a failure of both the Boulle novel and the original series to have
never brought this up.  I hope the new film will set this right.

By the way, I really suspect that this new movie will be good, getting mostly
positive reviews and I predict will pass the $150 million gross mark in less
than three weeks after its release.

We will see.   As to whether or not I personally will like it -- probably
not, but that has to do with how much I revere the original.

Anyone else care to predict how much the Tim Burton's PLANET OF THE APES will
gross in the first three weeks?    I also predict an opening weekend of $60
million.   (Too bad it's not still opening on July 4th, it would make a lot
    more.)

This is going to be a very big summer for movies.

I thought the original movie intentionally left aside any attempt to explain HOW the apes became master - other than that man blew himself to smitherines.  I think that the flavour of the time would have had us thinking radioactivity was the cause for a freak line of apes who then evolved.

I think this new movie will smash all records.  It will attract Star Wars and Star Trek fans, starving for some interesting sc-fi (hang on....when is Matrix released?).

Of course, that does not necessarily mean it will be a great movie, but it will bring back a world with "Planet of the Apes" on the shelves of every supermarket - something many of us took for granted as we grew up.  That will be nice for me and for my own children.

It was in the scene where Zira and Cornelius are let out of the zoo and put up in a posh hotel ( and for the life of me I can't remember the name of it).  As they come into the room with all the balloons, flowers, gift baskets, toys, they play that theme.  It continues through their escapade of trying on human clothing and then of Cornelius watching the news and Zira taking a bath.  I love that theme!!

Before anyone orders from Terry Hoknes--

Beware, that, at least, at times--

He takes FOREVER to fulfill your order.

This has come up here, before.

Others, seem to have taken it n stride, that,
        for some folks--

Their oders were four weeks, to MUCH later, late.

What I found MOST distrubing, was--

After over twenty-five years with "half-a-foot" in collectibles--

        Terry's attitude.

He was extremely late, without ever Emailing me, to let me now what was
        going on.

Now, I knew he was in a touring band, so I waited quite a while, myself,
        before contacting him.

After the THIRD Email,he finally responded.

        With a very blase attitude.

I did get my stuff, A COUPLE OF WEEKS--

        Even later.

        Being pleasant is one thing--

And something I greatly enjoy, and advocate--

        :-)

        !!!

But Hoknes, wih a smile, did not seem to take his need to fulfill
orders, or trades, with alacrity, with any great concern.

Please pardon my ignorance, Brian. I do not mean to criticize you fine work.
But that hair, human though it is, looks like hair from a beard. I thought
it was crepe hair. I was thinking along the lines of the original wig, which
I believe was Asian hair. Even Ms. Hunter herself has remarked what a
        gorgeous wig that was.
Is this the economy or deluxe Zira mask? I'd look it up myself, only my old,

Very good on your knowledge of hair and wigs.  Most commercial wigs  are made in the orient.  The human hair used for the wigs can come from Europe as well as Asia.

The human hair wigs and hairpieces on these Limited Edition Zira masks are assembled in Asia.  We cut, die  and style them here in the USA.  We chose wigs and pieces with a nice texture, much like Zira's pieces from the first film for these masks.

This Limited Edition mask is a slip latex pull-over (Halloween-style) Mask designed for our Economy line, but because it uses the more expensive human hair pieces (rather than synthetic) it could be considered a Deluxe "Economy" Mask.

        There you go.

I think they both look great, but if I had a choice I would chose the japanese poster over the U.S. poster. The Japanese have always had a great talent for creating  better posters than the U.S.

Just look at their line of Original POTA posters.

.html Yeah, the quality of the make-ups definately went downhill after the first film.  Time and budget limitations had a lot to do with it.

In Beneath you'll notice that the hair work got simpler, Zira's especially.  By Escape, she was hairless from the neck down.  Escape was also the beginning of the "helmet hair" as it became known.  That technique and styling for chimps and gorillas continued all the way through to the tv series.  In Battle, the gorillas were lacking the heavy fur collars from the first two films, making Aldo's gang and band of pencil neck geeks!

But then, that's this fan's opinion.

Before anyone orders from Terry Hoknes--

Beware, that, at least, at times--

He takes FOREVER to fulfill your order.

This has come up here, before.

Others, seem to have taken it n stride, that,
        for some folks--

Their oders were four weeks, to MUCH later, late.

What I found MOST distrubing, was--

After over twenty-five years with "half-a-foot" in collectibles--

        Terry's attitude.

He was extremely late, without ever Emailing me, to let me now what was
        going on.

Now, I knew he was in a touring band, so I waited quite a while, myself,
        before contacting him.

After the THIRD Email,he finally responded.

        With a very blase attitude.

I did get my stuff, A COUPLE OF WEEKS--

        Even later.

        Being pleasant is one thing--

And something I greatly enjoy, and advocate--

        :-)

        !!!

But Hoknes, wih a smile, did not seem to take his need to fulfill

Yeah, she loses the chin piece in Beneath and then except for the opening
title credits her hair line recedes from her brow. And into Escape her hair
has lost some of it's flounce. I don't know if they felt she would have
discovered hair spray on one of her shopping trips or what. She does say in
her book that being the only female main character she didn't have to wear
        the brown contact lenses.
You have to wonder if the actors had any input on their characters look.
Or was it up to the director or producer or make-up supervisor or who. Did
they feel that Cornelius wouldn't be able to get a haircut in space? Or did
McDowall feel he'd look cooler with longer hair? Did they feel that Zira's
hair would thin as she got older? Or was Kim just more comfortable with the
hairpieces off her forehead and neck? The world may never know. Next time
I'm stuck for a question I'm gonna find out.

Wow, a second generation POTA fan.  Oh my God, am I getting old.  I can

So, Raven, you'll probably be asked these questions, so I'm ask first.
What's your favorite POTA film?   Which did you see first?   What did your
mother like about it?   How do you rate the sequels, and have you seen the
short-lived TV series?    Are you into POTA comics?   Have you ever read the
Pierre Boulle novel that started it all?   What do you think of the new POTA
        film that's coming soon?

And finally, have you ever heard the name 'Medicom'?   Because if you
        haven't, you soon will!

My name is Rory, and I'm the one in this group who's not too crazy about the
        sequels.

        .htmlHey LTZ,

I'm not so sure Kim Hunter's Zira in the original film had hair under her
chin either, they just covered it up better.  That one low-angle shot in
BENEATH of Zira where you can very plainly see that there is no hair under
her chin is just another example of how sloppy some of the filming was in
        BENEATH.

One thing they didn't do in the later sequels that really bugs me is they
stopped blending the hairlines around the faces by gluing individual hairs
along the edges of the wigs.  I think by BATTLE and especially the TV show
the make-up is beginning to look clownish.

One thing they did in ESCAPE with make-up is really neat, though.  Has anyone
else noticed how the baby chimp playing baby Milo at the very end has on a
POTA chimp nose appliance so he (actually a she, I believe) would look more
like his 'parents'?   I wonder how they got that baby chimp to put up with
having that nose glued on her face?

Hi everyone! Thanks for the warm welcome! Well to
answer Rory's questions... Hmm.. where do I began?
Well I am a 27 years old now but I got into POTA when
I was 13 years old. My mother is a Science teacher and
had always loved all kinds of scifi movies and she
would always talk about this movie called Planet of
the Apes and for the life of me I thought she was a
bit crazy... LOL Well we ended up getting a satelite
system and we got the channel WGN and one weekend they
had this "APES WEEKEND SPECIAL" thingy and so my
parents and I watched all 5 movies. The first one
POTA, was what got me hooked. The entire movie kept my
13 year old mind interested, but then when they showed
the statue of liberty scene I was like WOW! That was
awesome!! LOL. The first POTA was my first one I ever
saw and I loved it. In fact I enjoyed them all. After
I had seen those I wanted to see the tv show.
Everytime the tv guide would come out I would search
for them on reruns but I never did, until Christmas of
1987... WGN was doing it again... they had another APE
FEST.. but this time it was with the tv shows. But
they were doing it in the form of the tv movies where
they showed 2 episodes. "Treachery and greed and Life
liberty and pursuite... etc.... anyways they showed
all 5 of them and I was able to tape 4 of them and
still have them to this day. :) I know some people
didn't like them but I kinda did. Galen is my favorite
ape of all. Well I have not had a chance to ever see
the APE cartoons or the comics. I do have the books
and have read the original pota book that the movie
was based from. And now I am really really looking
forward to seeing the new POTA movie this summer. I
even have gotten my husband into all this. The more I
am learning about the new movie and seeing some of the
apes from it I can't wait!! LOL Ok ok I am know I have
written way too much so I will end it here. Thanks
again for the warm welcomes and I look forward to
talking with you all about POTA!

        Raven

I think it's the HTML format they're using. The nbsp probably can't be read

When I was on 6.0 I don't think they were there. But I can usually read

        Wait you're right!

Well, maybe. I was looking for the quote in her book but found none. Though
I do remember reading it somewhere maybe in a make-up artist interview in one
of the Apes mags or somewhere. But even if they didn't even blend individual
hairs on the neck under the chin, the make-up on the neck was brown, which
was not the case in the second or third film.
I do recall the chimp in Escape, baby Milo getting touched up to look more
like his parents. She did mention however that they did make a breastplate
for her. Milo was a six month old straight off the boat from Africa, and
there seems to have been some teething trouble with her stand in during his
        training period. Ouch!

I guess the best thing to do is put the original POTA on and freeze-frame
shots of Zira.  However, I have a lobby card from PLANET on one of my
apartment walls -- the trial scene -- and it shows Hunter in profile.  No
whiskers on her chiny-chin-chin.  I think if you look at some real
chimpanzees you'll notice they don't really have beards.  HEY!   They don't
        go in for fads!!!!!

.htmlA very good response, Raven, and NO you didn't write too much.  We need more
members like you.  (No offense meant to other members, but in general this
isn't a very chatty group, ironic considering we're all about fixating on
talking apes -- WHICH IS WHAT WE REALLY ARE -- HUMAN APES!!!!).

Raven, I'm 41 and saw PLANET on its original release in 1968.  I'm always
glad to hear that my favorite film can still blow people away in what I know
must have been terrible pan&scan TV broadcast, probably also edited.   I
haven't seen PLANET in a theatre since 1974, so the DVDs, fully letterboxed,
clear, sharp and bright are a reason to praise the Lawgiver.

Do you have the DVDs?   If not, go out and get a player and let PLANET be the
first DVD you buy.  You won't regret it.

.html Actually, in POTA, she had more hair around her face closer to the muzzle and her neck and jawline were painted out dark.  In Beneath and Escape they didn't do this, so we all see pale skin showing through in areas that we didn't see in the first film.

Those are the old ones - the living room looking thing is from the
Zira model, and the Beneath bomb base is from the Zaius model.
Escape beach scene was swiped from a Tomb Raider thing on clearance,
and the Battle scene was from the Caesar model, one of several that
            were not rereleased.

            Glad you enjoyed.

I agree completely.  I still can not say whether the movie will be good or
bad.  It looks from the trailer that action-wise it should be exciting, but
even that is up in the air.  But, it does seem, from what little I can see
in the trailer, that Estelle Warren looks dumb, and can't act, but again --
we'll see.  Alex thinks the script is good.  Okay, fine.   We'll see,
that's one thing we DO know

bunch I have seen on any other lists. :) I'm really
glad I joined. :) Well I think someone asked me if I
was a collector. So far the only things I have
collected are the books from POTA and Beneath and the
movies. I have the 5 orginal movies on VHS when they
came out in during the 30th anniversary. And then I
have the tv movies just taped from the television back
in 1987. I had some of the tv episodes in book format
but when we moved they got placed in a box for the
trash... I wanted to kick myself when I realized what
            had happened. :(

Hey did they ever make a Galen doll?? I just recently
found have gotten into searching for more memorabilia
about the APES and I was wondering if there was ever a
Galen doll made? Thanks! Talk to you later! Have a

Mego rereleased their Cornelius figure as "Galen" in 1975.

Yes, Mego made a Galen doll back in the 70s. It was similar to their earlier
Cornelius doll, but had a different body style and a slightly different paint
job on the face. The uniform was also a little different in color. Check it

The quality of emails is really starting to disintegrate.  I am becoming quite embarrassed to let our new members experience this.

I must say I don't even really know waht you guys are squabbling about.

Alex, thanks for the photo.  It is not the type of Orangutan most POTA fans would expect - it looks like a REAL Orang!  I found this the hardest thing to adapt to.  The Gorillas and Chimps do not look too different, but the original Zaius looked like what one would expect a FEMALE Orang to look like - the males have the extra facial fat when they mature.

Alan, I know what you mean.  I am now really looking forward to seeing just how convincing the orangs are and I am keeping an open mind and trying to be positive.

I am not, however, being blindly loyal and faithful to the remake as I have not seen it yet.  If it is a flop, it will still satisfy me in some ways as attention will be drawn to POTA on a grand scale and it is about time!  If it is a success (and hopefully a success because it is good, for which there is also no guarantee), even better.

Alex, you really have to stop attacking people who do not like certain things about the remake.  Your devotion is admirable, but in a way it is comparable to a religious fanatic who is blindly faithful to an uncertain concept for all the wrong reasons.  Live and let live Alex.  Don't dampen your enthusiasm, just stop attacking people.

            Yes,

I too have noticed the lack of scintillating banter that characterizes the
POTA news group. So why not bring back the old arguments, if you know what I

the orangs. But if that's the look they want...more power to them. I'm
happy if it's a hit. I'm happy if it's a flop. Basically just pretty
content. Leaves me the chance to make the movie I want to make. If I can
get a Fox's blessing. I won't hold my breath, but I'll find a way. They

I hope the new film is not a flop, because if it is it will be an
embarassment on a scale bigger than "Lost in Space."     The reputation of
the original film has had to weather the lesser quality of its sequels for
thirty years now, and during the Eighties hardly anyone cared about POTA or
gave it any respect, most appalingly Fox themselves!!  When they first put
out the complete series on video in 1985, they did so on the Playhouse Video
label!!!  The POTA movies were kiddie films!!!  (However, the thirtieth
anniversary editions and the documentary kind of made up for that debacle --
            though it took long enough.)

So, I hope the new movie is a huge hit and validates Boulle's conception as
an excellent vehicle for social satire and political allegory.

However, I am worried about one thing and it involves Fox.  I'm getting the
sinking feeling that Fox's offical attitude towards the original series, if
the new film is a success, will be "Forget the OLD movies, this is NOW what
'Planet of the Apes' is."   They will treat the original and its sequels,
including the TV series, as museum pieces, which may mean NO special edition
DVD's will more extras, including a DVD set of the TV and cartoon series.

I hope I'm just being paranoid here, but you never know with Fox.  My hope is
that if Fox thinks there's enough money to be made, then they'll keep the old
            films alive.

.htmlI was a little kid in the Sixties.  I grew up on the original Star Trek and

there was an episode of Trek where Kirk beamed down to a planet and it was

I liked the first couple Trek movies, and I've liked every new series,
especially episodes where actors wear lots of foam latex (I wonder where I
get that from?).  I'm going to miss 'Voyager' when it ends, and I'm looking
forward to the next Trek series and movie.

I'm a POTA fan and I like Star Trek.   Do you folks know that when Time
magazine reviewed the original PLANET OF THE APES back in '68, they said it
wasn't up to one episode of Star Trek?   They did!!!  God damn them all to

.html Phantom Menace is the "Battle" of the Star Wars series (so far). A shameless cash in that doesn't progress the plot or maintain the equity of the original. But that's just MY opinion. When fans are blinded by their dedication they make ripe targets for labelled crap.
Alex, don't take it so personally, you are obviously spend a lot of time on your site, which makes it one of,  if not THE best around. I think we all anticipate the new film and many have voiced their opinions pro and con, but I say let's wait until at least some of us have seen it and are in a more informed position before we make claims that it rocks or sucks.
And I'll still probably take my son to see Episode 2 even though I was luke warm about Ep 1.

            Alex --

I really don't understand what your problem is.   Please explain.   Whatever
bitching I do about something that's lacking in this sequel or that, or what
was wrong with the TV show is because of how great I think the original movie
was ( and Boulle's book).   I only wish the sequels had been better so I
could revere them as much as the first film, but they're not -- and I'm not
            going to pretend they are.

As far as the new movie goes.   I really wish they were doing it like the
Boulle novel.  God damn it, do I wish they were, but they're not.  So, until
I see this thing.... this 're-imagination'....  I'm simply holding back my
enthusiasm.   I hope it's good, I really do.

I don't think being a fan of something means you literally have to be a
'fanatic' about it.  I'm not going to be "Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no
            evil" about anything.

I think your website is great.  I spent a long time on it one day looking at
all the great photos from behind the scenes of the original's spaceship
            sinking.

I'm glad you love everything about POTA.  Good for you.  I'm sorry I can't be
            that way, but that's that.

            Best,
            Rory

Is that a good thing? Not that it's the end of the world, but I
think Phantom Menace has damaged the mythology of the original
trilogy. It's harmed the series as a whole. Worse yet, when you
start doing the math, it's full of continuity errors, which is not
really excusable when you consider that all four films were guided by
            one hand.

Well, that's not what I was going for, but to each his own. As you
pointed out, the reworking of Star Wars and Star Trek has caused them
both to "now suck". With the exception of Cronenberg's "The Fly" and
Carpenter's "The Thing", most remakes are ill-conceived marketing
ploys that, at best, don't touch the original and, at worst, tarnish
the rep of the entire franchise. The fact that ANY POTA fans are
hopeful shows a lot of open-mindedness, in my opinion.

You thought these two remakes were good?!!!   Not me.   I like Carpenter's
"The Thing," but I'd rate it fair at best.  It needed MUCH more tension.
When I was a teenager and saw the Howard Hawk's version on TV for the first
time, I was glued to the screen.   Carpenter's was so over the top with the
make-up effects, that it was just a joke the first few times I saw it.  It
wasn't until many viewings that I began to like its mood, but still it could
have been much better.  Problem with it:  Carpenter is basically a hack.

Okay, let's get back to POTA Talk.

I've seen it.   It's overall too silly, with poor masks.   If Boulle's novel
