Well, it's an Apes movie. In that it has the same name, and it has talking
apes in it. I'd say that the similarities end there for the most part. I

curiosity to find the woman behind the mask that peaked my interest in her.
But since all the characters are different, can it be called Apes? dunno.
don't care. I'd like to see what Ms. Carter does as lead she-ape, but since
she's only half ape, I guess I only half care. It's better than King Kong,
Mighty Joe Young or Space Balls. At least apes are back on the big screen,
whatever they do with their screen time. Why complain about what might have
been. At least if it does well there's a chance for more.

I think it depends on the treatment it's given. If you treat it as a serious
subject it will be taken that way. The Time of the Apes, apes were pretty
silly walking, riding or driving.

Definitely Terry Gilliam (have you seen how he treated the remake of an old 20 minute French Sci-Fi Filck from the 60s - 12 Monkeys?) would be the best to direct a Boulleisation!

Anyone else got suggestions?

Phil --

I've seen it.   It's overall too silly, with poor masks.   If Boulle's novel
were handled by a great director (who?, I don't know), I think it would work,
but that's just my opinion.

So is the original movie not an Apes movie because it was not true to the
original novel "Monkey Planet"?

Get off it!

LordTZer0,

Was there a movie "Bride of Kong"? I hope, if there was, you did not find
that big old thing attractive!:)

An appallingly bad Japanese PotA rip-off. Imagine how convincing a seventies
Godzilla film would be with quarter of the budget and you've got some idea
of how cheap this thing looks. So bad it's good.

And by a strange coincidence, I've only just seen it for the first time.
It's bizarre.

Alan

I've go to say that my views are halfway between those expressed by Alex and
mlccougar. On the one hand, I'm not about to go on and on about how this
isn't Planet of the Apes and real fans should disown it. But nor am I going
to go nuts over a film that I haven't seen.

I expressed an opinion based on my knowledge and experience - I don't like
the idea of a remake and I think some of the apes in it don't look that
good. People are obviously going to disagree but at least I'm basing my
opinions on what I've seen. If there's one thing I've learned from other
mailing lists, it's that as soon as anyone mentions how a "true fan" of
anything is supposed to behave, people start getting upset.

Who measures what a true fan is?

The more important question is who cares?

The very fact that we're on this mailing list and that we're passionate
enough to express strong views one way or another suggests we're all "true
fans". Alex is raving about the remake without having seen it. Mr Cougar is
condemning it to movie hell without having seen it. I'm stating that I think
it's a bad idea and would have preferred they didn't make it, but I'm still
going to give it a chance and go and see it. I don't think I'll be shocking
anyone particularly by saying that I don't expect to like it as much as the
originals. So who's the true fan here? We all have our reasons why we feel
like we do, I don't see that we can say one is right and the other is wrong.
I love the sequels while Rory thinks they're honking. Who's right?

I don't tell other Ape fans that they should behave like I do, nor do I
expect to be accused of not being a true fan for differing from someone
else's opinion. So let's not start this "true fan" nonsense - we all are, we
simply have differing views of what PotA should be. If we keep this up,
nobody will be able to spread the word about Ape fandom, because we'll all
have fallen out with each other long before the movie opens.

Rant over.

Now let's talk about fun things again, like Time of the Apes.

Oh, and I loved the Jason & Alexander stories too.

Amen Alan. I agree with you wholeheartedly.

That's been my thinking all along. It seems like the film will have a lot
of things going for it . . . better technology, larger budget, etc., but
I've always thought that if it ain't broken, don't fix it.

I'm trying to be openminded, however. In the end though, it's pointless to
debate it. It really boils down to this . . . I won't know if I'm a fan of
the new film or not until July :)

.htmlALRIGHT!!!!   I'VE HAD IT!!!!!    I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!!

When will people stop calling Boulle's novel "Monkey Planet"?!!!!

That was not the title, GOD DAMN IT ALL TO HELL!!!!   Some stupid Limey
publisher back in '63 called it that in England for about five minutes.

The title is (in French) "La planete des singes"  or (in English)
"Planet of the Apes"!!!

It's true that the French don't have a word for apes, so 'singes' is monkey.
Which I guess would in English literally translate as "The Planet of Monkeys."

But F*** that "Monkey Planet" shite!!!

.htmlDear E-group --

In my humble opinion you are a true POTA fan if you're a geek over any aspect
of the POTA phenomenon, which started as a novel by this French dude, Pierre
Boulle, back in 1963.

Maybe you think the book is the greatest thing, or the first film, or perhaps
it's Ursus and the gorilla army battling mutants BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE
APES that turns you on, or maybe you just spank-the-monkey over Nova.

Whatever!!!    Let's just except that we're not all the same.  Some of us are
Chimpanzees, some Gorillas, others Orangutans (and then there's those who are
just "Bloody Baboons!!!").

Get it?   Didn't any of you learn the lessons from these movies and shows and
comics when you were kids?

Although "The Gamesters of Triskelion" was pretty damn close. I've read
that Angelique PettyJohn tested for Nova. In the first issue of Sci-Fi
Universe they have her standing on a studio beach wearin' something lookin
like a shammy. In the Encyclopedia Shatnerica there's a listing for
Angelique. Shatner is asked about her. He says..."Was she the one with the
big breasts? I remember her" They then mention that she auditioned for POTA,
..."almost earning her the dubious distinction of sharing the screen with
both Shatner & Heston" Or words to that effect. Anyhow, pretty
funny......Enjoy, John

I sent this link out a few weeks ago and no one responded, so I'll send it
again.

I found this piece of fan fiction that tied the POTA TV series (and some
elements of the first two films) to Star Trek: The Next Generation. I am not
a big Star Trek fan (I respect it, but have never felt compelled to jump on
the bandwagon), but I knew enough about it to make this enjoyable. Still, I
thought this story was pretty clever. If you are a fan of both series, you
may find this cool:

Actually they weren't the original ears. To hear Nimoy tell the story,
the *original* ears were hideous looking things that didn't look at all
like a natural part of his head, but looked like Mickey Mouse ears that
fit over his own ears like earmuffs. It was when Nimoy complained
about how silly they looked that a more professional makeup artist
was hired to design something that looked appropriately believable.

Subject: Is the new movie an APES film at all?
.html
.html"miccougar" posted earlier that the new APES movie isn't an APES movie at
all, but rather a piece of crap.  I understand his point, but look, the
original series ended with BATTLE.  That was it.  If it pleases you to think
it continued into the TV show, fine.

The point I want to make here -- and I'm not trying to defend doing a
"re-imagining" at all -- is that there's no way Fox would have made a new
APES film using the old makeup design by Chambers.  It's dated, and I think
most of you would agree that it looks kind of primitive now.

So, since the ape makeup wouldn't look the same, then you're really doing a
'new' PLANET OF THE APES movie no matter what approach you take.

Another thing that should, in fairness to Fox, be considered is that a
mega-million dollar production like this has got to appeal to the WORLD
boxoffice.   The studio could afford to make a six million dollar Sci-Fi
movie in the Sixties that was literate and concerned issues appealing mostly
to the domestic boxoffice, but not today.  People in India or China or outer
Mongolia are probably only going to get a picture that's primarily action, so
hence the approach they're taking.

Of course, I haven't read the script and maybe something of substance is
going to be put in between all the battles.  I hope so.

It's just wait and see.   Expect the worst, but hope for the best, because
then if the worst doesn't happen, you're that much more pleased.

Anyway, I hope Raven hasn't been put off by all this uproar!  LOL!

Subject: Old Apes vs. New Apes
.html
I think the recent dialogue here is good. I like these debates. As long as it
does not get personal and spin out of control into a flame war, I can be live
with it.

My personal opinion is that yes, the new film is a Planet of the Apes film.
That is the title and that is how I will view it. But beyond that, it really
has nothing to do with the original film series. I view them as too seperate
entities. If you choose not to, then that's cool too. I like to view the
original 5 films and the TV series as a cohesive unit, because that's what
works for me and adds to my enjoyment. Others (Rory) do not, and that is fine
as well. I love the novel, but don't really consider it as part of that
previously mentioned cohesive unit. Yes, it was the inspiration, but I don't
see it as being in the same universe as the films and TV series. Again,
whatever works for you.

I am looking forward to it mainly because it is an ape film and secondly
because it is a Burton film. I am a big Burton fan and will see whatever he
makes (even if it is a remake of "Steel Magnolias"). I can accept that others
are not Burton fans. The bottom line is that no one has seen the film. Until
July 27, any opinion on whether it is good or not, is not really a valid one
in my opinion.

Man, I'm glad this is not a Batman list or we would really have our hands
full. What is the real Batman? The comics? If so what era? Batman comics from
the 1950s and ones from the 1980s are two very differnt animals. How about
the Adam West TV show? How about the Burton films and the two crummy
Schumacher sequels? How about the Bruce Timm/Paul Dini animated series?
(That's my personal favorite Batman incarnation). How about the Superfriends?
How about the radio serials? Novels?

How about James Bond? Are only the Sean Connery films valid? If so, the how
come "Never Say Never Again" is not considered canon? Author Ian Fleming
didn't even care for Connery. He would have preferred David Niven. Does that
make "Casino Royale" the quinnessential Bond film? Hopefully not. And talk
about continuity. How come this guy hasn't aged in 40 years?

OK, I have digressed, but hopefully my point of "different strokes for
different folks" has been made.

You say it like these are radical opinions I have! Carpenter's films
have sucked since he parted ways with cinematographer Dean Cundey,
and critics hated "The Thing" in 1982, but it's gradually gained a
following, as well as some respect. Probably his last good horror
film.

And Cronenberg is - well, no point in debating Cronenberg here. I
just thought The Fly was a textbook model of how to do a remake.

What I loved about it was that it just borrowed exposition from
POTA. It assumed the audience knew that if you went into suspended
animation, OF COURSE the world would be run by apes when you woke
up. It just assumed the audience had seen POTA and didn't bother
explaining things all over again.

But if you want to see a military chimp (with an ascot) being driven

Dear E-group --

Conquest was set in '91 so, does it have to go through a time machine or what?

So how is your question relevant to POTA Mike? It was so long ago, but I

Just to let Alex and everyone know, that "NICE" rare variant Planet of the Apes Cornelius Medicom NICE Item #571844313 that was brought to the group's attention last week, finally showed up today, and wouldn't you know it,  the seller sent me the regular one, not the variant he advertised.

I tried for days to get him to verify that it was indeed the DARK suited Cornelius (variant) that was pictured in the auction and either got no response, or got "pass the buck" messages from the seller's wife,  so I sent my payment off anyway.  While waiting for delivery, I continued to send e-mails requesting confirmation of the DARK Cornelius, but either got his knowledge less wife and her excuses, or received no responses at all.

Since I received the incorrect figure, the responses to my inquiries I have been getting are pretty sad and somewhat shady.  He (the seller) will not exchange the figure he sent me for the one he advertised, he will only refund my money, even though I have stated I do not want a refund I want the item that I won in the auction.

A classic case of "too good to be true" and "buyer beware".

I'm definitely taking this guy of our Medicom dealer list.

Thanx for reading, I just thought I'd vent a bit.

"Hi everyone, I have a question that someone may be able to help me out with,
I just recently purchased a Don Post Cornelius mask. And I know there were 2
different series released, one in 1974 and one in 1983, There are no dates
imprinted on the mask. Does anyone know hoe to tell the difference? Thank you"
    Rob
    Hi Rob,
I'm not sure if this will help you but I have attached a few shots of some of the masks in my collection.
    1) All vinyl Cornelius. I believe this to be a mail order only mask from Famous Monsters ( and the like).
But It may have been readily available, that's just what I've been told.

    2) O.K, the middle shot is of a mask which I've owned for around 20 years. So it COULD be one of the reissues but is significantly different to shot 3 ( which I know to be an 80's release). I always thought this was a first series Cornelius but after seeing a picture recently of a first series Zira ( there was no 2nd series Zira), It could very well be a Zira mask. How does it compare to the Mask you recently purchased?

    3) This is the early 80's re-issue Cornelius. I understand that the differences are that it's not as detailed (?) and has different type of hair to the first series Cornelius. Once again, this is just what I've been told.
Anyone out there know anything about these masks that can shed some light?
    Best,
    KEN

.htmlI've read your stories about being ripped off on eBay.I think, and I mean
this,if you are screwed over by someone on eBay,or Yahoo! auctions,or
wherever, start naming names.I know if there is any negative feedback I
wouldn't knowingly deal with them, but like a fool I don't always look at the
feedback ratings,I only look at what is being offered.

But,if fellow fans/collectors name names on this sight,I think I'd be more
apt to remember the thieving dealers name and what they did to you and then I
wouldn't even deal with them at all. And,if you have nothing but good dealings
with someone, that could also be mentioned as someone that can be trusted, and
    they have a good rep.

Again,I don't expect that you'd do this,I can see not wanting a slander
lawsuit or something like that. But,someone on this sight said "We are all in
this together".It was said in regards to our varying opinions on the new
"movie",but if it applies to that, then it sure can apply to not wanting to
see another collector getting ripped off.So if you know of a rip-off
dealer, consider telling the other members of the group who they should avoid.

    Just a thought....

      .html Hi Gang,

Yeah, he's got another one up there, so beware.  He has told me (prior to Matt informing me that he has posted the auction again) that he does not have any of these in stock.  Now he's tying the noose tighter around his neck by putting another fraudulent auction up.

He responded to my requests for information yesterday with this comment:

      "dude
      I screwed up
      send the Ape back
      I will refund your $"
Funny, my name is not "Dude".  He did not know that (thanx to Matt) that I now know of the second posting of the non-exsistant item.  I've told him to fix it.  If he doesn't correct it today, I'm filing a complaint with eBay that this guy's a fraud.  I suggest that every one else do the same.  Ebay will repremand him if they get enough complaints.

Anyway, still steamed, evenmoreso now that he's at it again!

Yeah, and I got ripped off by a guy in England who sold me a photo copy of a Cardboard Galen mask that was given out as a supermarket premium in '75.  He made no reference to the item being a copy and when I brought it to his attention, he flatly said it was my fault for not asking first and that I was an idiot for assuming it was original in the first place.
Needless to say, he has only 1 feedback , and that's negative.
So don't assume anything and ask questions before you bid!

The Arthur Jacobs archives has a test film for Jacobs' "Journey of the Oceanauts". It was directed by J. Lee Thompson and starred Eric Braeden and Bruce ("Willard") Davison. Fx were by Douglas Trumbell ("2001", "Close Encounters"). This footage is undeveloped. Basically, they were seeing if they could simulate water using lights, etc. The archive told me their funds are limited so they have alot of stuff like that. Basically, if someone wanted to pay to develop it, they would get a copy and the archive would get a copy.

John Wayne as Ursus? Eric Greene would have a field day with that.

It's not fair to say you'd have a bigger budget, that's cheating. Jacobs would have loved a bigger budget, too. But I would have gotten rid of the "primitive apes" in "Escape" and "Conquest".

"Beneath" should have had a different story. They could have done an ape story , they didn't have to bring in another astronaut. Playing by the rules, you don't get McDowell, you get very little Heston. Have Lucius look for Taylor. I probably wouldn't have blown up the world, so that would negate the "Escape" lapses.

"Escape" and "Conquest", I think were done very well for the budgets they had.

"Battle" : new costumes, better writers.

But what's Burton's excuse if it sucks?

Subject: Re: [pota] What Would You Do?

      Hey Matt,

Just sent for the POTM script, and just remembered something else about Mort
Abrahams' memos:  He thought Heston's acting wasn't too great at the final,
"Too toothy" is a phrase I recall, and he wanted to cut most of Taylor's "I'm
home, I'm back...." speech.  Thank the Lawgiver Abrahams wasn't POTA's
      director.

As to your questions: The first thing I'd do with PLANET is double the
budget.  I also think Boulle's novel could have been shot as written.  I
would have given the ape society a retro-Fifties look with just some
redressing of Fifties cars and clothing.  Cities not well know in the West,
such as those ugly modern ones in East Europe could have been used for the
apes' city.  Planes could have looked the same just as long as you couldn't
tell what actual manufacture and model they were.

But leaving PLANET as it was shot:  I'd have made the spaceship more
convincing, and I'd have actually sunk the full-scale prop, not a five-foot
model.  The lightning effect should have been better in the desert scene, and
when we first see the cornfield there should have been a matte shot showing
some of the desert mesas in the far background.  The ape city set should have
been bigger and less 'Flintstoney' looking.  I wish Roddy McDowall and some
of the other actors playing apes had worn black turtlenecks so I couldn't see
their necks sometimes, as I can now, and I wish they's thought of painting
the actor's real teeth black back when they made the first film instead of
      later in the series.

I also would have had larger, chunkier guys playing the gorillas, and I'd
have given the orangutans longer arms and those 'things' real adult male
orangs have on the sides of their faces.  I also would have let the chimps
have real chimp noses.   AND NO BACKGROUND MASKS!!!  Of course, this is what
we're going to see in the new movie and I'm glad.  There will be background
masks, but very good ones and different varieties, and hopefully only in the
      background!

As for a change in the cast:  For some reason I would have loved it now if
Boris Karloff had played the President of the Assembly.  What a great role
for him to have ended his career with.  He would have started and ended in
two of the screen's most famous makeups.  And as much as I love Maurice Evans
as Dr. Zaius, and wouldn't really replace him if I could, I can't help
wondering what Edward G. Robinson would have been like.   "You're a menace,
Taylor, see!  A walking pestilence, yeah!"

As for BENEATH....  well, I wouldn't have made BENEATH, but given what it is
I think it would have been nice if it had had triple its budget.   Heston
should have done the sequel and I think was really a dick not to have.  I
would have simply replaced him and had another actor play Taylor.  I'd have
tried for Richard Harris.  The film would be very different if Taylor were
      the main character.
But again leaving the film as it is, another change in casting I've often
thought about is what if they'd gotten John Wayne to play Ursus.  That would
have been perfect, and if they had Ursus probably would have had a larger
part in the story.  James Gregory was good though.  They first asked Orson
Welles to do it, but I don't think he would have worked.

Somehow, I would have found some other way to end the film beside blowing up
the world.  That ending is like the Igor's brain being put into the head of
the Monster in the 'Frankenstein' series -- A major blunder, but with POTA
they managed to recover pretty well.

ESCAPE:  I wouldn't change much in it EXCEPT Roddy and Kim's makeup should be
better.  They don't look the same as the do in the original and they really
      should.

CONQUEST:  Again, more money in the budget.  Better makeup on everybody,
especially McDowall, and less background masks.  And ape feet!!!!    I also
wouldn't have copped-out as they did with the ending, and I'd have left in
all the violence that would have probably gotten the film an R rating.  We'd
      have had a better film.

BATTLE:  Oh, boy!   I guess A STORY would be nice!   Why did they make this
film?   Whaa, Whaa.... Why?  Nuf said.

So don't assume anything and ask questions before you bid!
the term "The customer's always right" doesn't apply to most Ebay sellers.

I'd still say report him.If he did it once,he'll do it again I'm sure. And he
really seems to have an attitude like "Its no big deal".And personally,I know
I would HATE being called "Dude"by some unscrupulous dealer.Treat your
customers right, don't lie to them and don't call them "dude",or "honey" or
"babe" or whatever. They have names,USE THEM.

.html Well, I certainly felt like an idiot for trusting a complete stranger in the first place. His correspondence was also very arrogant and rude and he left me negative feedback for threatening to complain to Ebay. I took the case to Square trade ( an Ebay affiliate) but they can't do anything unless the other party concedes to get involved. He didn't reply to their emails.
So I can't stress enough now, ASK QUESTIONS first or risk being exploited.
Who said "fans blinded by their dedication make prime targets for any labelled crap"?
Oh, that would have been me.
I certainly learned a lesson there.
