all the other missing bits and pieces.Ialso would have liked to see the
entire Ursus speech, and the cut scene with Ursus,Zaius, and the Minister, and
the Ape-o-Nauts in the space ship too.

I would like to find the people who had letters published back then, but I think it was propably mostly kids or young teens

I had 4 letters published in the Adventure Comics back in 1991-92.

Just a question for the group. Are there any members of the group that had a
letter published in the 70s "POTA" magazine?

If so,have your views changed over the years or are your feelings on
whatever
you wrote in about the same?

I just thought it'd be something to toss out to the group.

Funny you should ask this.  I was just talking last night privately with
another member of this group.

Yes, I had letters published in the 70's Marvel Magazines.  No my views
haven't changed, and yes, I was arguing with other fans the same shit I've
been arguing here.

I guess I'll just never grow-up when it comes to POTA.

Also, I wrote those letters back in the caveman days before VCRs, so I only
had my memories of the films to go on, so I did get some things wrong back
then concerning like the dates in Taylor's spaceship.   I knew this would
come back to haunt me.

"Apes Fan":  last I heard they want to publish an issue near the release of the movie. Those guys fight among themselves, too and then "Apes Fan" grinds to a halt. Eventually they see "Apes" again and get the bug. They have a good deal with Tower stores to distribute. I'm sure at this point "Apes" has to be on their mind but I haven't heard from them. They're doing a DVD review website that takes time too.

Robert Rodriguez, director of the new "Spy Kids"said:

" I have to really feel a project in my heart. I turned down directing
"Superman Lives" and "X-Men". "Planet of the Apes" came my way at one point,
and I said no. I would have taken "Spiderman". He's one of the few comic
heroes that I really enjoy. But you go meet with a studio over these big
films and you realize it's not a movie. It's a big corporate project. It's a
pre-sold idea. I don't like to close my eyes and know it's a home run. I
want to invent something...I want to be there before McDonald's has signed
    on..."

I believe Rodriguez was James Cameron's choice to direct "Apes".

Roger Ebert gave "Spy Kids" a great review.  Others haven't been so kind.
I'm going to wait for the DVD.

What he says -- indirectly -- about the new POTA film should be listened too

.html A costume for the female gorilla was made, as was the gorilla boy (Felix Silla).  The female out fit is the same pattern as Zira's tunic, only there is no leather on it ('cept for the glyph in the center of the breast, and two claspes holding the front together). I have a frame grab somewhere that a fan sent in that shows one of the females (chimp or gorilla?) turned toward the camera with a dark or black face.  It's hard to tell if it's a chimp painted dark in the face or actually a gorilla sculpt.  I'll hafta ask John Chambers next time I visit him.  Hopefully he'll remember.

Don't take offence please, but what the hell do you think Planet of the Apes (the original) was?  A reason to throw money away and let the artists express themselves?

It was produced to make money.  Maybe not quite as mercilessly as Star Wars (which I must admit I love and loved), but certainly the motivation was to make a money spinner.

Somehow I think after "Mars Attacks", the logical choice for the remake would have probably been Cameron (who seems to have a better Midas Touch than does Burton).  Between the two I would choose Burton as the more creative (and Oliver Stone would count to me as creative too).

Movies really are generally made to make money.

Speaking of such, anyone seen "Chopper"?

The next Gibson/Crowe has been born and he is the best charcter actor I have seen in a long time!

Just lately this e-group seems to be suffering from an attack of a form of
Political Correctness where many people are afraid or at least wary of
saying what's on their mind for fear of offending a certain individual or
      individuals.

If you were in a bar with a crowd of your friends you wouldn't beat around
the bush when making a point and if one of your pals said something you
didn't agree with you'd probably laugh and buy him a drink.

This e-group should be like a chatty crowd of friends in a bar not a sulky
WWF grudge match! So let's stick together and at least be tolerant of one
      anothers views.

Let's cut all this "I don't wish to offend so and so" ... "Please don't take
this the wrong way"... "I'm not having a go at XX personally."

Let's all just say what we want to say and keep our fingers crossed that
it'll be read by a reasonable, thinking adult.

Oh yeah, I sure hope I didn't offend any fans of WWF

My little brother loved Beneath!! :) I sort of thought
he wouldn't like it since it delt with those mutant
humans and he might find them a bit strange but he
really got into the whole movie. He is 11 years old so
he is used to watching Pokemon and Digimon and I
honestly didn't think he would get into the POTA
movies, but he did and that makes me happy. So next
week we got Escape planned. Oh he did watch a little
of the tv movies I have on tape and he liked Galen. :)
He is getting all excited about the new one in

But go back ten years, and you'll see Burton has a history of getting
high profile franchise gigs from studios, only to subvert them, which
usually leads to him packing it in and heading to another
studio. "Batman Returns", anyone? Good or bad, "Planet of the Apes"
(2001) is likely to not be cookie cutter formula. "Planet of the
      Apes 2", on the other hand . . .

That was a given.  After numerous unanswered e-mails and  filing complaints  and neg feedback with eBay, I knew he would retaliate, just his nature.  No sweat off my nose, I'm not into eBay for the feedback anyway.  It certainly isn't a living or a main source of income for us, that's for sure.  To some people it is, desperate as it may seem.  I just don't think they should do it dishonestly.

life intrudes. Anyhow, I would like to say that I enjoy this group very much
and I'll try my best to keep up my end. To wit: In the cave scene at the end
of POTA, if I remember correctly, at one point Cornelius mentions that at one
of the stages of the dig that the creatures must have had a crude
understanding of metallurgy. Now, with all the swords & body armor in the
reimagining, could the new film in fact be a Prequel? Just a thought that
crossed my little human brain on the way home from work today. Any thoughts?

I don't disagree entirely - I think a lot of what Serling wrote was negative
in one way, but at the same time it was always observed with a wry sense of
humour, sort of like Hitchcock. (Wow, Serling writing and Hitchcock
directing... there's a film I'd like to see) Positive or negative though, he
was one gifted writer and I don't think many have surpassed him.

Of course a good film is a good film, but I must admit I'm a sucker for a
downbeat ending! One of the reasons I love Beneath is that when I first saw
it I just couldn't believe they'd blown up the Earth! Not too many films can
      claim to have done that!

And yet strangely enough the show was very popular here in the UK. It got
very respectable ratings (can't remember the exact figure) but if I remember
correctly (second hand of course, I'm too young to remember otherwise) it
      was on on Sunday nights.

I assume this popularity is why we had things like the three UK annuals when
      the US didn't.

Personally I'm not upset that they did what they did with it. I admit I've
not seen it so it could be atrocious for all I know (but hey, it's Apes, so
it can't be!) but the idea of doing something different appeals to me. This
is why I like the comics as well - okay, so some fans won't like them, but
those fans can revisit their "true" PotA in film form whenever they want. I
think the comics and the TV series and so on enrich PotA by taking the same
basic concepts but exploring strange new aspects that the films never would
      or never could.

      John,

I know you put your 2 cents in from time to time,so you are "off the hook".I
was refering to the people that have NEVER said a word at all.Now I know
myself that I certainly won't be contributing like I am these days.Life will
eventually get in the way for me too. So,no I don't expect every one to reply
to everything that is ever said.I know I won't always be doing it.

The people that I was refering to are those that just let the other members
do all the talking and then they just keep hushed on whatever it was that
was/is said, whether they agree or not.If they disagree they should say
it,because as someone said to me one time,"If you have a thought against
something, say it because your silence is approval".That is what I was trying
to say.So people if you have an opinion, pro or con to what is being said, say
      it.

And my thought on your prequel theory is,no it isn't nor could it be.First
off, this movie of their's is on a different planet all together, not future
Earth. They themselves have stated this movie in no way ties in with the real
Planet of the Apes. And those creatures with the understanding of metallurgy
were the humans.I believe those items were located in the same digging as the
      doll.

I finally broke down an ordered the soundtracks to BENEATH and
CONQUEST/BATTLE from Film Score Monthly. Man, do they ship fast! I ordered
them on Thursday and got them on Monday. I highly recommend their service! I
haven't listened to them in their entirety yet, but here's my first
      impressions:

      - The packaging and liner notes are awesome (great photos and design),
although there was one error in the BENEATH booklet. It says something to the
effect that the sauna scene in that film was the only time the apes appeared
unclothed in any of the films. Our discussion about the nude Caesar in
CONQUEST a few days back disputes that claim.

      - I listened to all of the CONQUEST tracks. I love "1991 Restaurant" I am a
fan of cheesy lounge music and that one certainly fits the bill. I wish it
could have made it into the film.

      - The stuff from the old BENEATH LP.......what kind of drugs were they on
back then? I have to throw that one into the CD player the next time I have a
      party.

      - The actual BENEATH score is quite good. It is interesting to listen to
these away from the film. Very weird stuff. I was listening to BENEATH in my
car on the way home from work tonight and all I could think of is "what if I
got in an accident and whomever rescued me was greeted with the sounds of the
bomb worshipping song as they pried my body from the wreckage?" What a weird
      scene that would be!

      More thoughts later!

      .html
For your reading enjoyment, this is from the letter column in issue #13 from
Marvel's old POTA mags (October 1975):

      Dear Sirs,

Are you kindding about the Saturday morning animated PLANET OF THE APES TV
show? MY GOD, when will it stop? I love the APES, but it's just they're
getting worse as they go along.

I would like to see you take a poll on your statement that BENEATH THE PLANET
OF THE APES is the least-liked of the series. It certainly isn't the worst of
the series - ask any critic; he'll tell you it's BATTLE without a doubt.

On your covers you always have gorillas with M-16 rifles. In the first two
films the Apes had their own style of guns.

There is a lot of talk about what you're going to do after you finish your
adapations of the TV series. Well, I think you can come up with something
better than that. How about doing your own adaptation of the book? Get a few
of your best writers together and see what they can do with the book, page by
page. That would really be something.

I also have another angle I think you should take on your TERROR strip. How
about this...Before the world was ravaged by the nuclear wars there was a
colony of scientists living on the moon. Now after centuries of believing the
earth void of life and highly radioactive, their descendents decide to
explore the earth and...well you take it from there.

Where ever you go with your stories I hope don't make the Apes out to be
fools. After all the stuff the TV series did to discredit the films, your
magazine should at least try to restore a little bit of diginity to the APES.

      Rory Monteith
      Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

The next one came in issue #28 (January 1977):

      Dear Sirs,

In many of your articles you have expressed confusion as to what date the
original PLANET OF THE APES took place. One thing says this, one thing says
that. I have viewed PLANET several times, and during these repeated viewings
I have written down the dates that appeared on the clocks during the prolouge
of the film. I have checked them over and over again, and you can be sure
that the information that I am about to reveal IS as it appears in PLANET OF
      THE APES.

Now whether or not you are going to take this information down, and keep it
as truth, is up to you. All I can say is do what I have done, see the film -
pay attention - write it down - see the film again and make sure it is
      correct.

I am sure I am correct and this is what I found to be in the original film...

In the prologue to PLANET OF THE APES when Taylor first looks at the clocks
he sees "EARTH TIME" as 3/24/2673 or March 24, 2673, and sees that "SHIP
      TIME" is 2/14/1972 or February 14. 1972.

Taylor says... "In less than an hour I will finish our sixth month out of
Cape Kennedy. Six months in deep space. 'Flight Hour Time', that is."

They therefore took-off from Cape Kennedy on, or around, August 14, 1971!!

After the ship crashes in the inland sea, Taylor looks at "EARTH TIME" and it
reads 11/25/3978. TAYLOR'S SHIP CRASHED ON NOVEMBER 25, 3978!! ("Ship Time"
was not shown in that shot)

Later at the shores of the inland sea, Landon says that they were in space
for 18 months (they slept for 12 months) and Taylor says..."Our time."

So the ship's flight was 18 months long, from August 14, 1971 to February 14,
1973, "Flight Hour Time," that is.

In the sequels the year that PLANET took place was 3955. This, as you can
see, is a mistake. Somehow the screenwriters overlooked what was in the
original, and how they overlooked this is one of the greatest mysteries of
the PLANET OF THE APES film series.

      Hi

I'm not new to the list, I've been a lurker for well over a year but I've
just subscribed a second time using my work e-mail, so i thought i'd
      introduce myself.

My names Steve i'm 31 years old, married with a 15 month old son named
      Louis.
I live in and am from the UK.

I'm not quite into POTA as deeply as some of you chaps obviously are, but
i've liked it since i was a nipper. I've never seen any of the pota films at
the cinema though i wish i could off, well Planet and Beneath anyway. The
last three i've always thought seemed like made for TV movies.

It was interesting watching the TV series on Channel Four in the mid
nineties. I kinda remembered bits of it from when it was on TV originally.
It didn't seem as good as i remembered ,but then again i'm a too cynical 31
year old and not a kid . The stories struck me as being on the same level of
something like the 'A' Team. I have them all on tape ,perhaps i'll watch
them again someday, maybe with my little boy when he's a bit older.

I'll go to see the new film although i think they should have left well

I made a mistake in my reply to Alex's posting,I really meant to say
that I still continue to see the cup as HALF EMPTY,not half full.I
don't know where that slip came from.

No people,he did not covert me with his optimism.

Well then, Remind me never to invite you to a party.
I only party with those who have a can a beer half full.
You can continue to party in your basement alone if you plaese...

I'll go to see the new film although i think they should have left well
alone and perhaps made something original instead of endless Hollywood
remakes of old films and TV series.

.html Sorry to have confused you Steve.  My comment was in reference to the tons of webgroup emails that will fill your mailbox as we get closer to the release of the new film.  You'll be wearing out the delete keys as you attempt to clear space on your mail files.

Some folks just don't get the jokes . . .
Someone asked if anyone was bothered by the suana scene.
I just couldn't pass up a set up like that.
But if you have to explain a joke, it isn't going to be funny anymore.
      Please recalibrate your bullshit detector.

I do agree with you though, they should have had female gorillas and
