I do agree with you though, they should have had female gorillas and
orangutans in the series (movies and tv) especially in the POTA funeral
scene. That always bugged me,all of the female mourners being female
chimps. >>

I made a mistake in my reply to Alex's posting,I
really meant to say that I still continue to see the cup as HALF EMPTY,not
half full.I don't know where that slip came from.

Hahaha - Rory, you don't actually appear to have changed at all! These could

Well, Alan, I guess the problem was this. I saw the first film when I was
eight. As I was getting older I wanted the APES films or whatever to become
more adult. I think I first read the Boulle novel when I was twelve or
something, and I thought that was a pretty serious tale meant for adults.
But as I was getting older, the APES phenomenon was getting more and more
juvenile. I guess it just pissed me off.
I'm always amazed when some other POTA fan will tell me they got into it
after seeing BATTLE first, or the TV show. I just don't see what was there
to hook you. I think only the original is good enough to go crazy over, but
that's "just my insanity."
To each his own.

.html .htmlOkay POTA e-group, I've been hinting at this, so now here here it is, but
you'll have to have the APES movies on DVD and of course a DVD player. (For
those of you who only have VHS, well..... I guess you're just a lower order
of primate in this situation.)
Would any of you doubt me if I told you there's a moment in BENEATH THE
PLANET OF THE APES where you can see a gorilla sport some pretty major wood
-- both figuratively and literally?
Well, it's true -- and I assume you know what the slang term "major wood"
means.
To view this very prominint and no doubt painful event, go to Chapter 8 on
the BENEATH DVD.
Now, watch your time display on the player. At 33 minutes and 2 seconds
(33:02) hit the still button, then step forward one frame at a time -- and
watch the gorilla running into the shot at the far left of the frame.
The first one of you who responds to this posting and confirms what I'm
saying wins a BIG banana!!!!
And as a bonus here's another one, this time from CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF
THE APES.
Go to Chapter Three on the CONQUEST DVD. Watch the time display on the
player. At 8 minutes and 56 seconds (8: 56) hit still, then step forward
one frame at a time.
This is the scene where Lisa leaves the bookstore and stops and looks back at
Caesar. As you step forward you'll see coming into the frame from the right
a gorilla extra just leaning up against a wall behind Natalie Trundy (Lisa)
and just watching the scene being shot. I guess he had no work to do at the
moment.
Well, good hunting POTA fans. I'll have other such moments from the APES
movies in the future -- unless you all with DVD players start looking at this
things a frame at a time like me and beat me to the group with them.
C'ya!

As many of you who read Playboy may know. Mr. McDowall sported sort of
tackle that would have done John Dillinger proud. This makes the line in
Escape about measuring his inside leg even funnier. For evidence of this
anomaly, go to the breeding scene in Conquest, as he's walking down the hall
to meet his prospective mate of the afternoon delight, his jumpsuit seems to
contain a foreign object. Like me you'll wonder why you never noticed it
before after all these years. I don't think you'll be able not too now. By
the way, does anyone know for sure who the girl was? Was that Joyce Haber?
I don't think it was Natalie Trundy. Just who was that? Anyone? Anyone?

be negative, but at the same time show that, after all there is hope so ling

No, I prefer to see things as both half full and half empty.

Yeah,
Now
you are talking!
OK, I
have found someone in Fox who wants to know what the true fans would want to put
on a re-release of the box set as extras.
I
asked about 3 days ago for people to list the edited / deleted scenes they know
of / think exist. Assume you are talking to an idiot who has never seen a
POTA flick or met a fan.
Can
you guys try to throw some together now and make mention of any other rare test
footage etc you can think of and any other suggestions you might make for the
DVD set.
A lot
of people seem to criticize members for not contributing and nearly everyone has
played God about what a shitty job Fox did with the DVDs so here is your chance
to make a difference!
What
is the point in writing a letter to Fox and bitching about something if you
don't take the opportunity to suggest how it can be better?
I
would ask that the "ultimate" box set include the TV Series and even
the Animated Series, including any edited / deleted scenes / bloopers from
these.
I
would also want TV advertisements for the above, TV adds for toys (Megos and
anything else around), stills of collectibles, the Roddy intros to the "2
episode TV Movies" we spoke of recently, the make-up video of John Chambers
making Roddy's Face that I recently saw at Fox Studios Australia, a photo
gallery of the Ape Mania Merchandise and some of Brian's interesting costumes
and comments from Brian and from Mr Chambers if this is at all possible,
interviews with surviving cast and crew......
Oh
yeah, better leave some for you guys......

I've been watching these All Access shows on IFC where they have Tobe Hooper
talking over Chainsaw or Kevin Smith Talking over Clerks. How about a few of
audio tracks like that. Obviously Roddy and Maurice are dead, but there's
plenty on Roddy and they could get Kim and Chuck and whoever and you could
switch back and forth.
I also would like a graphics map of Ape City as it was set up back on the Fox
ranch. And how about an interactive Timeline. Boopers! Lifemasks!
Whatever! Is there any footage of the Blake/Christ auto shows? The beauty
contest?
The old commercials and promos were nice too. What about the Ape-earances on
other shows? Kim on Johnny Carson...Roddy on Carol Bernett? I believe Terry
or someone had extras on his stuff. How about the records? There are so
many books, zines and TV shows the possibilities are endless. <.html

What are you on about?
They originally wanted the humans naked in the first one. And in the fourth
one they chopped out a lot of it because it was too violent. Not to mention
the selective breeding in both. Aside from all that the dumbing down of what
serious material that was there until it's little more that a Saturday
matinee kiddy serial. Is anyone with me on this one? Or am I off the page?
Too many ape fans have out grown the films.
But maybe you don't feel being locked in with a half naked Linda Harrison is
sexy, or burning upside-down crucifixions is violent, or that nuclear
destruction is adult. I'd say for thirty year old G-rated films they were
trying to be as Adult as they could possibly get! This ain't Poke'mon! I for
one want it to rise above any Ewok Factor that ever creeped in. And I don't
want generation old, G-rated restriction on them. <.html

One of my most vivid and early cinema memories was seeing Brent

this was the most graphic and bloody death I'd ever seen in a movie

Believe me Jeff I fully agree with you.
This is just a more updated story of Apes ruling over mankind, and more
complex because there are more twists and turns in this remake than the
original.
Just when you thought you've figured it out, you only find out that it's
just the tip of the iceberg...
As the original shows you a post nuclear world with it's climax of lady
liberty. (there's only one direction there) But a great storyline for it's

Too many ape fans have out grown the films.
But maybe you don't feel being locked in with a half naked Linda Harrison

sexy, or burning upside-down crucifixions is violent, or that nuclear

OK, I have found someone in Fox who wants to know what the true fans would

OK, Michael!!! What I'd like to see is mostly limited to the original film
(Does this surprise anyone?).
First, I'd like to see a remastered, anamorphic film transfer, then I'd like
to see them revisit the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack they created and
directionalize the dialogue, add some surround ambience, and boost the bass.
As far as a commentary track, well, has anyone heard Charlton Heston's for
"Ben-Hur" just released on DVD a few weeks ago. Not exactly great. I'd be
more interested in hearing what Mort Abrahams has to say. He seemed to know
what he was talking about in the "BeHind" documentary. I'd also like the
score to be on an isolated track, especially so I can hear the unedited
'Crash Landing' cue as I watch the film. Of course, I'd also love it if they
could get some comments about the score from Jerry Goldsmith and what it was
like collabrating with Franklin J. Schaffner.
After that the complete test film with Edward G. Robinson is a must, as is
the 1968 featurette about the creating of the makeup.
And something else I'd really love to see is a massive gallery of
behind-the-scenes photos.
There was also a scene shot of Zira and Lucius being stopped by gorillas as
they leave Ape City with Taylor. That would be nice to see if it still
exists.
A boxed set that includes all this, plus the sequels, the TV show, and the
cartoon series would be fantastic. The Planet of the Apes Omnibus.
I hope Fox is really considering something like this.

Thanks for the item you posted earlier about Roddy McDowall. That sure was
information new to me. I got a real good laugh out of it. Very funny.
And about what you said about seeing ESCAPE when you were ten.
I guess we're about the same age. I remember being really shocked by the
shotgun killing scene in "Bullitt." That was late '68, I was just nine
then. My father took me to that one. He also took me around that same time
to see this film called "Last Summer." That was an interesting movie for a
nine or ten year old to see.
Anyway.... when I first saw ESCAPE, man I cried at the end.
Now, I'm not sure what the point of this is. T, what's the point again?
Anyway, I see that poor Harrison guy is still trying to unsubscribe himself.
I'm still laughing over that, too!

"Oh it's a real liberation - if you've got a mask, it's a sort of license to

feeling people up, and being really naughty." Not clear if that's something

T,
I might have been the one who said that, but what I meant was that the
original is of course a film meant for adults, BENEATH panders to a younger
audience but is still meant in some ways to be taken seriously, as is ESCAPE
and CONQUEST, the latter especially in its original form, BUT..... then you
get to BATTLE and beyond and the filmmakers just gave up. After that APES
was for kids and for many years it damaged the reputation of the excellent
first film.
The good news is that now I think the original is again getting the respect
it deserves.

I don't want to be negative here (I really, really don't!!), but I've talked
to someone who dealt with the producers of the BEHIND THE PLANET OF THE APES
documentary, and I was told that pretty much all they could find in Fox's
vaults wound up in that production. So, I don't know if it's really wise to
get our hopes up that these lost scenes from the original APES films survive.
Do you know something I don't? Did this guy from Fox hint that there is such
stuff? It would be nice.
I also know that scenes where shot for PLANET involving the astronauts using
a rope to get down from some mesa, and other bits of business, and that
there's a scene of Heston swimming across the lake in front of ape city and
having a little gorilla boy throw rocks at him that was shot for the escape
sequence, but cut for length.
However, I think it would be a miracle if this stuff survives.
Maybe Jeff Krueger will check in this weekend with some input.
But, Michael, I guess it can't hurt to let this guy from Fox know what's
wanted.

As part of the group that laughed at the "twist" in Sixth Sense (as
well as anyone who didn't see it coming), I really hope H'wood
doesn't give us a twist we see coming a mile away, again. Then
again, most people loved Sixth Sense, and saw it twice just to see
how they missed that "twist". Blah.
Fight Club, on the other hand . . . <.html

Maybe as a deleted scene, but I agreed with their decision to cut it
from the film. <.html

May have been HIGHLIGHTED, but how about the WHOLE test makeup
scene? If I have it on tape, and they obviously have a cleaner
version that they showed pieces of, putting the whole thing on a disc
should be easy. <.html

I need an opinion from all of you...
I want to add a second movie to my site, but before
I go all the way with Gladiator I may change it to something else.
The choice:
The Matrix or Terminator
What are your
thoughts?
Best,
Alex

I agree, Phil. It was right to cut it out.

Oh, I think I called for the complete test film before. I have it on tape,
too, but the print used in the documentary was excellent. For those who
don't know, the test film begins with conceptual sketches Jabobs had done by
artists, is narrated by someone who tells you about the 'proposed' film, and
is scored by music from the "Lost in Space" TV show. It's pretty cool, and
should have been included on the present DVD boxed set.
I think it was included in a Japanese laserdisc boxed set that also included
the longer version of BATTLE.

.htmlSorry for the wisecracks, but I honestly think any of these films
you've mentioned are comvered amply on the net. What's cool about
your apes site is that there's nothing nearly as comprehensive about
POTA online. Any other options? Something maybe not really
represented well online?

OH HELL YES! Most
excellent...
As for films, thanks Phil, I think I'm
going with The Matrix.
This film's storyline has more food for
thought than Terminator.
I like both but clearly I only have so much
time on my hands.

thought it'd help to have them all together. I'm sure someone would correct
me if I'm wrong or missed stuff:

Nova's pregnancy was filmed, according to the Inkworks cards.
Full Edward Robinson make-up test.
Extra scenes of Heston chase
Dialogue from Heston about the missing link between man and ape
>Beneath:
>
>Longer Sauna dialogue;
Make-up tests - especially the child
Any extra footage involving the mutant society - e.g. the children playing -
I'm sure this was intended to be in the original version but ended up only
being visible in one of the mutant projections on the wall when Brent is
interogated
Extra snippets of Ursus' speech
>Escape:
>
>Scena at the beginning with Astro Apes/Earth being destroyed;
>
>Conquest:
>
>Ape being gunned down at beginning
Missing scenes of violence / original ending
Breck threatening a gorilla while a soldier holds him (does this exist, or
is only in stills?)
Breck's death (was this shot?)
>Battle:
>
>Aldo on the School Bus
Extra scenes from teacher chase
Entire bomb subplot (at least we know this exists!)
Commentaries I'd like:
Goldsmith, Rosenman & Scott (I'm a fan of the music)
J. Lee Thompson (the most obvious choice, surely)
Kim Hunter
There are others too, but people like Heston, Abrahams, Creber, Chambers
etc. would be great but would probably be repeating a lot of the
documentary. Perhaps an audio commentary combining snippets from all of
these people along with the various other less famous actors and crew.
TV series and cartoon I agree would be best left for a separate release...
although from a sales perspective perhaps including them on a couple of
extra disks with this set would be better.
And of course it goes without saying - remastered soundtrack, Behind
documentary, cinema trailers, adverts, Oscar presentation, perhaps a spoof
or two (Fox do own the Simpsons after all...), etc.
So Michael, have you really been in contact with someone at Fox or is this
just a con to get us all talking about fun things again? :-)
The thing is, Fox probably wouldn't be prepared to put all the effort into
it... little do they know that they've got a dedicated group of fans here
who would do it for nothing!
I'm annoyed, I'm sure there is lots I'm forgetting...

Why do people join in the first place if they don't wanna talk Apes?
I'm still on the Buckaroo Banzai list, but since the tv show ended up in
development hell I don't read the post much any more. Apes is one of the
highlights of my day!
But has anyone else noticed the lack of production news in this news group?
Have they muzzled the crew like bad humans? Or I'm I in the cone of silence? <.html

What is with the stupid zips?
I don't know where that come from or where they go.

Why do people have to send zips anyway?
Why the hell can they send a gif or a jpeg so we can all see? <.html
