.html There were a lot of the same arguments in this film.
Burt and the guy who played Harry Mudd, the guy on the android planet on Star
Trek, were working a mine in the jungle with these missing links. They were
really slaves.
Since money had no meaning for them they worked on a barter system. And a
dispenser would pay them a can of Spam, which they loved, per wheelbarrow
load from the mine. There were the same sort of questions -- are they human
or animals?
At one point the missionary priest takes them to the river to babtise them
until someone points out that he'd be commiting a sin if they turn out not to
be human.
The gal that looks like Ari ends up pregnant. I don't remember who the
father was, but it doesn't much matter because when they end up in court to
decide if they are running a slave operation she freaks out and climbs a
large book case which falls and kills her. After that they give up and
leave. No happy ending here. <.html

.html If anyone needs the Soldier Ape B (the one from BENEATH with the longer beard
and machine gun), I suggest that you check out www.toysyndicate.com. I got
one from there for $40.95 shipped. For some reason, this figure usually goes
for more $80 on eBay. Felix from Fantasiatoyz.com sells them for $120 (and
his prices are usually pretty reasonable). I ordered mine on Tuesday and got
it today (I wanted to wait until I received the item before posting about it
in case it was another bait and switch scam).
Hope this helps someone.

Sorry for digging into this since I know it was discussed here
before, and I can well imagine the storm it caused. But I wasn't here
then, and some of what I'm reading...well, troubles me.
These are evolved apes we're talking about, not zoo animals. In their
world, we're the lower species. To them, doing it with a human is
bestiality -- not the other way around. And by the way, bestiality
only applies to sexual relations with what one acknowledges to be a
lower species. From what I gather, Ari and Leo grow to consider one
another equals; certainly they are in intellectual terms. (Which is
more than I can say for Leo and Daena -- she may look like your
average girl in a fur bikini, but if she's like Nova then she has the
mind of a primitive.) Our reality has no place in this fiction.
Maybe the real problem people have with this is the inter-species
thing. And that's not new for the human race either. If memory
serves, Africans were once considered a separate species by self-
proclaimed "intellectually superior" Anglo-Saxons. That didn't stop
masters from raping slaves.
What surprises me most, though, is hearing such scorn from Apes fans.
I guess it just goes to show the PotA message is still relevant
today: around the world we continue to abuse, exclude and kill one
another for being the "wrong" nationality/race/religion. How could we
possibly be expected to accept another evolved *species* as our
equals?
ET stay home. Human arrogance is alive and well. /Mez <.html

.html Hello everybody,
Is it o.k with you guys if I join this newsgroup. I can't believe I
have stumbled upon you good people. Please let me introduce myself a
little. My name is Vanessa, I'm in my early 30s, and I live in
Virginia. I work as a freelance photographer (my dreams of becoming a
scriptwriter put to bed when I got my tenth rejection letter!)and I
am a fan of movies in general, both the classics and the not so
classic (!), and POTA is without a doubt my all time favorite movie.
I remember first seeing it some time in the mid-seventies. I first
saw it, believe it or not, in Italy, in a tiny movie house in Trento
not unlike the one in 'Cinema Paradiso'. It was dubbed, and I didn't
speak Italian (still don't.)
Needles to say, as all you newsgroup members will now, those first
few frames blew me away (I am speaking of the crash landing and post-
crash landing scenes, the exterior location shots.)
There was something so incredibly haunting and powerful about those
images, and I think that the impact of this movie must have shaped my
own sense of aesthetic, for I often recognize elements of those first
exterior scenes of POTA in my own photographic work (I shoot a lot in
Arizona and Colorado if I can. I love the desert.)
I eventually got around to seeing all the sequels (which I bought
when they came out on DVD) and although I found them exciting as a
child, I don't think they're too wonderful when I watch them today.
They seem so 'cheesy' and somehow 'cheap', the pull on masks alone
enough to give POTA a bad name (I hope I am not offending any of you
good folk by discussing my feelings about the sequels. I am new here
and maybe I should keep my opinions to myself until I get to know you
all better.)
That first viewing of POTA has never left me. That movie has always
had a magical grip on my heart and my senses.
Anybody out there feel the same way?
I hope that we can keep up some kind of correspondece. I did not know
that there were groups devoted to POTA, and I think it would be great
if we could all share our experiences - our personal experiences -
about the movie and what it has come to mean to us over the years.

Since money had no meaning for them they worked on a barter system. And a
dispenser would pay them a can of Spam, which they loved, per wheelbarrow
load from the mine. There were the same sort of questions -- are they

At one point the missionary priest takes them to the river to babtise them

The gal that looks like Ari ends up pregnant. I don't remember who the

decide if they are running a slave operation she freaks out and climbs a
large book case which falls and kills her. After that they give up and
leave. No happy ending here.
T, you remember this movie pretty good, better than me. What I remember most
was when this movie came out in 1970. By that time PLANET had really hooked
me on movies, and I'd always check the paper to see what new movies were in
town. I heard from grown-ups that they were making a sequel to PLANET, but
it seemed like it was never going to come out -- there was no internet back
in those days, remember, T?
Anyways, one day in the paper I see the ad for this film "Skullduggery" and
in the ad was a line trying to sell the film that said "Expected to draw the
crowds that flocked to 'Planet of the Apes.'" I thought for a while, "Is
this the sequel to 'Planet'?" Can't be.
My mother took me to this movie. I remember the little missing link guys
were played by little Japanese actors and all they had was hair on their
faces. The movie wasn't any good, of course. Even at ten years old I could
see that. That guy from Star Trek, who played Mudd, T, was an actor named
Roger C. Carmel. I think in the movie he was the guy who knocked up the
female missing link. If she'd given birth, then these things -- they had a
name in the movie, but I can't remember what it was -- then they would have
have to been given equal rights or something. It's been so long since I've
seen this piece of junk, that that's all I can remember of it. It's not on
video anywhere, but you can probably find some bootleg if you look hard
enough. But why would you want to?
By the way, Roger C. "Mudd" Carmel committed suicide in 1986.
You can find out a lot of stuff like that if you check on www.imdb.com.
That's the Internet Movie DataBase site. You type in the film title and all
it's credits come up and plot synopsis. You can also post your own comments
on movies. I'd love to read yours, T. If you really want to read some
funny ones look up those for "Ice Station Zebra."
Anyway, a few weeks after I saw "Skullduggery," I come from from school one
Friday, and my younger brother says to me, "I saw this commercial on TV for a
movie "Underneath 'da Planet of 'da Apes"! As you can imagine, I went ape.
I sat in front of the TV the whole of the next day waiting and waiting to see
this commercial. Finally like at four in the afternoon it came on. I
remember thinking afterward, "Who the hell is James Franciscus?"
Pretty funny, eh T?

I haven't had the chance to read through all the messages yet, but I
will be doing so this evening. I notice that many of them are quite
short and chit-chatty, which is great. But I was sort of hoping to

POTA is a very important part of my life. Maybe it's just because it

But I would be very interested to discuss the imagery used in the
movie, the sense of strangeness that comes with it, etc.
Any takers?

Vanessa,
Have you tried going to the archives for this group? I start reading them
from about three months back. It will take a while, but you'll get a good
idea of what we have been talking about. You'll also get some laughs I'm
sure. Let me know if you don't know how to do this.
In any event, I'm one of the ones here that writes the most -- which will
probably bring on a slurry of comments -- but I'll certainly respond to
anything you say that I think is deserving of response.

Thanks, Rory. No, I don't know how to search the archives for the
group. I've been trying to figure it out.
I'm not quite sure how to take the last part of your message.
You'll "respond to anything I say that you think is deserving of a
response."? Don't you think that's kind of an off putting thing to
say to a newcomer? It makes me feel sort of shy about leaving
messages! If there are guidlines for your newsgroup, Rory, please
email them to me and I will certainly uphold them and try to make my
messages suitable. Anyway, I think you've created a terrific

Still pretty interesting and a lot of parallels with POTA.
I never knew that Spencer Tracy wanted to be Klaatu.
Or that they almost didn't use Sam Jaffe for the Einstein character because,
like Kim Hunter his name had appeared in Red Channels.
Perhaps I should clarify for Venessa.
I'm the Kim Hunter fan of the group. A much over looked actress who only got
two things from Hollywood . . . An Oscar and blacklisted! I'll be peppering
my posts with Kim references throughout. But if you've started on the
archives you know that already. And like POTA, they feared being laughed at
when they opened. It too had a ground breaking score and a controversial
backstory. In fact they had to reshoot some. But if you didn't watch AMC it
will be on again later. Check your local listings for time. <.html

I asked her about that. Here's what she had to say about it.
"A lot of people were very unhappy when he named names in front of the House
on Un-American Activates Committee. None of us were really happy with his
doing that. But also you have to remember, the committee knew all the names
that he was giving them. So he didn't give them anything new. He wasn't
really giving them news. But that was a long time ago, for Christ sake. And
his work through the years absolutely extraordinary. He certainly was the
best director I ever worked with. And I think almost everyone who's ever
worked with him felt that way. And it was high time that the Academy honored
him, for his work through the years. He certainly deserved the Oscar, God
knows. And I think the protesting was rather silly."
I have to agree with her.
And if you've seen films like America, America, East of Eden, Gentleman's
Agreement, On the Waterfront and of course Streetcar, I'm sure you will too.
So how did she get back in good graces? She paid someone. There was a guy
in an office and if you wanted your name taken off the list you gave him a
couple hundred bucks and that was it. Only in America! Even when she was on
the list she still worked in the theater and on television. But with the
double whammy of being blacklisted and the Best Supporting Actress curse, her
movie career did suffer. <.html

/Mez

Is it o.k with you guys if I join this newsgroup. I can't believe I

and maybe I should keep my opinions to myself until I get to know you
all better.)

Something else I forgot to mention in the posters/lobbies conversation was
that I also have a couple of the Japanese promotional programmes for some of
the Apes films. Can't say I've read much of them (don't speak Japanese,
which is understandably a problem) but they're interesting collectibles all
the same.

Yeah but he tried to control the sequels and screwed everything up. I blame
Heston alone for many of the plot holes. If he did not insist on having the

Prequel, but I don't think that was heard of then!).

I've only got an inch and a few brownies in weight on ya, but a

Hi, Vanessa! I'm fairly new to this group myself, and not as regular
a visitor as I'd like to be. (So I really should be saying hello to
everyone who's new, I know I've missed some. Howdy!)
What you said about the first movie got me thinking. I don't remember
the first time I saw it, probably because it turned out not to be my
favorite -- "Escape" is, don't hang me for heresy, folks -- but I do
recall the summer day in the mid-70s when I saw it again at my
mother's college. I'd talked her into letting me tag along just so I
could watch it while she was in class. Now, anyone who is familiar
with the PotA site I run knows how well my mother and I got along. It
was shortly after that I took over making dinner for the family every
night. You think I'm kidding??!! :)
You'll like this group. I haven't had the opportunity to post much,
but everyone seems kind and mature, even when opinions differ. And
the PotA knowledge base represented here is *staggering*. Ask
anything and it will be answered. All around, this is a fun bunch of
people. WHERE WERE Y'ALL WHEN I WAS A LONELY APES FAN IN SCHOOL???????
Enjoy! /Mez <.html

You know, there really aren't that many apes in this country. And the
average teen has only limited access to them. And I hardly think there's
anything to worry about there, because as we all know . . . real apes are not

.html Hi, everyone,
I have really enjoyed reading the messages on the board and hoped to
find a POTA 'home' here.
But I think I have upset an important board member. He started
sending me personal e mails and I answered politely. He asked me for
my phone number and home address and when I told him that I wasn't
romantically interested in him, he became very upset.
I didn't expect this sort of thing from a newsgroup and I will be
more cautious in future about responding to personal e mails.
I really wanted the opportunity to make some friends and to talk
about my favorite movie. I did not expect to have one of those scary
encounters you hear about.
To the rest of you, thank you for making my short stay here so

I think this is disgraceful behaviour by whomever has made you uncomfortable

I am hoping the person who upset you will own up and promise to stop

Hi, everyone,
I have really enjoyed reading the messages on the board and hoped to
find a POTA 'home' here.
To the rest of you, thank you for making my short stay here so
welcoming and fun.
I will stop back to hear what you all think of the Burton remake.

First off, I wanna say thank you to you all for being so great
tonight. As I said to the monitor, you guys are the kinda guys that
make a gal feel safe and protected on the net.
I know you all want me to give you this guy's name. The reasons I
don't want to do that are because this board means so much to him.
Also, I do not want to upset him any more, because my first AND last
name appear on the headers of my e mails and he knows the city I live
in. Paranoia. I know it is. Total. But I live alone and get nervous.
Another thing: I do not want his temper to fly up again. E mails
can be doctored, and if he wanted to he could claim that he is the
innocent party and I'm a she-devil.
I think that this guy is just real lonely and I guess I hurt his
pride when I told him I wasn't interested in him romantically. I'm
sure he is harmless. It is always the guys with the highest opinions
of themselves who are the most harmless.
I just feel sorry for him and maybe I should have just kept it to
myself. But you guys had all given me such a great welcome that I
felt I owed you an explanation why I wasn't going to post anymore.
I know all this will blow over and you guys can get back to talking

.html I was thinking, if the new movie is a hit, perhaps it could fuel interest in
a new POTA TV show. With so many sci-fi and fantasy type shows on the air
now, not to mention the over abundance of channels thanks to cable and
networks like Fox, the chances of a series like this surviving seem a lot
greater than they did in the 1970s.
Personally, I wouldn't want another series with the same set of characters. I
think it would be cool if it were more like an anthology, with different
story-arcs that lasted 2 or 3 episodes. They could introduce different
characters in different parts of the planet, maybe even different eras in
history. There could be guest stars galore. Bring in the top writers and
directors to work on each arc. I think it could work.
Any thoughts?

.html .htmlWell, this certainly has been an interesting time with the POTA e-group. Not
much talking about APES going on I've noticed.
I think Vanessa should tell the name of the member she seems to think is a
problem. I say this because I can't call for this person to just quit the
group.
You see, I too am guilty of contacting privately another female member of
this group. I won't say who it is, but I've exchanged several e-mails with
her, and I offered to send her a photocopy of the PLANET pressbook so she
could see what the original ads looked like. She sent me an address -- a
P.O. box -- and I sent her the pressbook. I've made sure I've been nothing
but a perfect gentleman with her.
I think that if Vanessa just gets this matter out into the open then she'll
have nothing to worry about. Maybe, Vanessa, just talking about APES for a
change would help? You mentioned that after all these years since you were a
kid you now see the sequels as kind of silly and cheesy. Since I was the
first person here to welcome you to the group, I thought that was a pleasant
coincidence because I can certainly relate. I kind of have the same view.
Funny, isn't it, Vanessa?
Perhaps we can start a discussion here in the group of what's wrong with the
sequels? I'll bet this will probably bore the other members who've heard
enough from me on the subject, but I think they'd love to read your views.
So, what have you got to say, Vanessa? This is certainly the place for POTA
talk -- if that's why you subscribed?

know it wasn't them now know it wasn't each OTHER, and that is what
mattered to me. I did not name this guys' name because I didn't want
to embarrass him. Looks like he's done that himself.
Thanks to all of you who have been so great to me. You all
encouraged me to stay but I was afraid that the guy in question would
start posting nasty or challenging posts to me, posts which made
nasty, ungentlemanly insinuations. Why do you think I started
posting on the board if it wasn't to talk about POTA. What a nasty
thing to say.
This is exactly the sort of crap I was afraid of. I joined this
group because I wanted to talk about POTA and hear other people's
experiences. How can I do that now that I've got someone on my back
making snide insinuations and trying to besmirch my character.
Some people clearly think that if a woman is interested in POTA,
she must have an 'ulterior motive'. I guess that's why they think
it's okay to start writing personal e mails describing themselves
as '41 year old single males who look like Tom Cruise and Keanu
Reeves'.
So this is the story. I joined this group to talk about POTA, I
started getting private e mails which I responded to because I was
led to believe they were from the board monitor (how many times did I
say 'congratulations on starting this group' and never get corrected?
Not until the shit hit the fan, anyway!) and then when I say I am not
interested in a romantic liasson, I get unpleasant, rude and nasty e
mails. I make it clear that I do not want to reveal this guy's name
out of respect and compassion for him, but then he goes and brings it
to the board and tries to besmirch MY character, implying that I had
some ulterior motive for joining a PLANET OF THE APES board!
Some people just don't take rejection well, do they.
I think it was Matt who said 'enough of the soap opera', lets talk
about APES. I'm right there with ya, Matt. So I'm going to say
goodbye to all of you.
I won't check the board myself because I'm too afraid of MORE nasty
insinuations. I like gentle folk like most of you are. I have
inadvertently caused a lot of trouble here and I did not mean to. I
love POTA as much as you guys. But I am unsubscribing from the group
so that this guy can keep his 'boys club' the way he likes it.

Brill idea! Just think what they could do with an X-File-ish slant,
where different timelines were followed as sub-plots, all of them
working towards 'final' acts. Some timelines could merge, others
could go off on new tangents. Nifty way to explore the quantum

.html Speaking of books, are the old paperback novelizations of the films worth
getting? I have Boulle's original novel and BATTLE (haven't read it), but not
any of the others. Is there any radically different scenes or
characterizations in these novels?

Hopefully Joe's book won't be affected. From what you've told us about it
Rory, it sounds like a must read.
