It could be because it had your original attachment on my reply?
Or it could be something to do w/ the Yahoo banner ads that seem to appear on all my incoming emails?
Not sure.
Anyhoo...
here's the message:

Very nice Rory!
It would be nice if Fox were to issue the 5 movies on DVD using their original poster art.
Are you planning to make new covers for the other 4?

Thanks, Ken.  Yes, I plan to do the same for the sequels, it's just a
question of finding the time.  Also, because the covers are bent from being
in the DVD snap cases, or whatever they're called, they have to be mounted on
cardboard or foamboard first so they can be perfectly scanned with no
reflections from the folds.   I bought the boxed-set, but since they sold
PLANET by itself I also got that, since I knew I was going to want to do this.

Anyway, the original Fox DVD cover for PLANET is now ruined, replaced by what
I did.  I don't think I want to do that to the covers to all the sequels just
yet.  I might want to keep my boxed-set preserved as a collector's item.
Besides, you know my view of the sequels -- I'm really not too passionate
about them.

Since PLANET is my favorite movie, I just couldn't any longer stomach the
30th Anniversary Statue cover -- and it was on the front and back!

I might just make poster repros for the sequels that can be slipped into just
the front of the DVD cases.

But, damn!!!  I'm going on forever about this!  Enough now.

Agreed. And one of the Alpha Omega bomb with the main mutants worshipping in
front of it (maybe includue Brent and Nova in robes). And an "Escape" cage
with the trio of intelligent apes and depressed gorilla. And Conquest-style
gang of violent marauding apes. And Cornelius & family on the throne from

Yeah! I saw the "Entertainment Tonight" footage. It looks great and it
looks like they really are going to try to give some food for thought. It
even asks the question we all want to know: "Is there a soul in there?"
Looks like there is.

Tim Roth steals the trailer, but they all look like they're acting there
asses off. Visually, it looks alot more like the originals than I expected.
In about 15 minutes I'll go to the website and see the trailer proper.

Rule the Planet! Bow Your Head! Kill Them All!

Good answer! Brian did get it, Brian Peck. Big "Apes" fan and a successful
one. He's an ator and acting coach. A member of "Apemania". Donated the
Lawgiver to the Chambers tribute. Coached the "X-Men" actors, and got to do
3 days as an orangutan in the new movie; Did all the male voices for the new
video game (including Zauis; Booth Colman flaked). Was a good friend of
Roddy's.

Subject: More Lost Words of Franklin Schaffner
.html
.htmlHere more of the interview I posted yesterday.

Kaufman:  For both "The Double Man" and "Planet of the Apes" you used a lot
(SEE,  Jeff Krueger!) of wide-open country.  You possibly could have used
forests for PLANET.  Why open country?

Scaffner:  Well, PLANET posed a special problem.  You hoped people wouldn't
guess the fact that the ape society was on Earth, but also had to deliver
hints from time to time in order to make the ending legitimate.  Wide-open,
desert-like scenery seemed to indicate a planet somewhere, and was suitable
for the idea at the end of a planet that had been devastated.  Actually,
aside from the opening, and the return at the end, the rest of the film --
the ape town, for example -- is the 20th Century-Fox ranch in Malibu.  All we
did was grow some corn and some tall grass.  The beach was about twenty-five
minutes from where I am sitting, on a cove called Point Doom, appropriately
enough.

Kaufman:  There are two relationships in PLANET which I guess I could call
love -- the one between Taylor, the hero, and the aboriginal girl, and the
one between two ape scientists.  I found both extremely touching, but a lot
(Jeffery?!!!  You got a lot of explaining to do!) of people thought the ape
relationship ludicrous.

Schaffner:  I think the relationship between the chimpanzees comes out more
touching than humorous.  That was certainly our intention.  We also wanted it
to counterpoint the man-woman relationship, which consisted of a
technologically highly developed astronaut having to deal emotionally with a
human being who was little more than an aborigine, albeit attractive
physically.  But if there's any social comment in this film it's in the
relationship between the chimpanzees.  For my money, they come close to
stealing the picture.

Kaufman:  How did you go about solving the end of PLANET OF THE APES?  It's
certainly a phenomenal ending.  I tried to think of other ways in which such
an ending could have been done and realized how easily it could have been a
fiasco -- unbelievable and totally unacceptable.  But your ending does work,
and I can't understand why.

Schaffner:  I don't think anybody, me least of all, could have predicted
whether this picture was going to work or not.  There was a debate for a long
time whether or not Taylor should live after seeing the Statue of Liberty.
It seemed to me -- as an optimist and one who wants to play fair with an
audience -- that the man must survive.  If he dies in the end there is no
reason to tell his story.  But PLANET went through more discussions in more
areas than any picture I have been on -- it had to, for there were so many
technical and creative problems.  For example, somebody would say:  "Well,
where is the source of the apes' light?"  Whereupon a sketch artist would
design a light for the apes.  Of course it looked silly, so you decide the
simplest approach is the best and just never show a source of light.  Then
someone would say:  "How do the apes communicate?  Do they use telephones?"
They don't use telephones because apes using telephones looks ridiculous.  So
you provide a kind of "extra-sensory preception" for the apes and when one
wants to see another one, the second ape suddenly walks in -- it's dramatic
license, but so what?  Then: "What's their form of transportation?"  In one
version the apes rode around in cars.  Well, that was suitable for very broad
comedy, or very bad satire, but we weren't making that kind of picture.  It
seemed their only credible form of transportation would be another animal.  A
simian riding a horse made another point -- the language one, that is, there
is no ther form of animal life on the planet, only simians and horses, and,
like the humans, the horses never make a sound.  The only form of life that
could vocalize were the simians.

It took forever but I watched the trailer on the website. Alex was right
it's going to be a masterpiece (or at least Burton's masterpiece). It
definitely has the traditional "Apes" message laden story and won't just be
monkeys wielding swords. That's what I wanted, but every fan has their own
expectation. I can't speak for the movie yet, just the trailer. There's
about twice as much footage as on "Entertainment tonight. The standout is
still Tim Roth but I also liked the bald guy who says, "They've come to see
the human who defies the apes". Ari is still the trouble spot, though I
suspect she shaves her face as a protest of the treatment of humans. Or is
it just an ape custom? All the female apes seem to be that way. My choice
for the new quote: "Get me the spaceman!". I guess my biggest problem was
the ship landing, which looks kinda silly. But I guess we can expect even
less scientific coherence than the originals. The trailer portrays it as a
myth or fairy tale, so I reckon this will be to the originals what "Edward
Scissorhands" was to "Frankenstein". Storywise it reminded me more of the TV
show than the original movie.
Verdict: Two thumbs up (mine and Cougar's).

Kill them all,

Enough now.

as a classic in 30+  years.

And you can just keep "flapping your lips".We all know how we feel on it,we
don't need you fueling the flames.

What's your point, Alex? A lot (how's that, Rory?) of bullshit makes money. That doesn't mean we have to watch it. The trick is for "planet of the Apes" NOT to be bullshit.

I suspect the reason she has less hair is as Helena Bonham Carter says Ari is

Ok, then let's change this to a "Titanic" e-group. It 's the biggest hit of all time, and the most Oscars ever, so it's definitely worth our time more than "Apes" (or that Cameron also-ran "Terminator"). Maybe they were better off casting Jim Carrey in 'Apes', it might have been an even bigger hit. No, Adam Sandler! He makes $25 million a picture.

Since I don't stand to make any money from "Apes", I will look at it as a film, not an investment. Thank you.    - - - Jeff

    Subject: Charlton Heston -- Superstar!
    .html
.htmlOh, My God!  Has it been over two weeks since my last installment of the
rundown of the films of Charlton "Chuck" "Chuckels" "Charlie Hero" Heston?

Have any of you been just pulling your hair out wondering when I'd get back
    to this?

Probably not, but since we all seem to be in a 'new POTA trailer' hangover
here, I thought I'd try to wrap up my thoughts on the guy who's arguably the
greatest movie hero next to John Wayne, and a legend in his own mind, Chuck,
    aka Mr. NRA.

With his latest movie appearance about to happen in a week (That would be
"Town & Country," folks.), let's go back to where I left off and then try to
cover all my favorite Chuck films since.  And boy, he sure did make ALOT of
    them!

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (1956)  Hey, did you see this just the other week?  It
was on ABC, I think because it was Easter, but more probably Passover, but I
passed it over after about five minutes.  Cecil B. DeMille's greatest epic is
just so corny and campy I can't take it.  I almost bought this movie on DVD,
but then I came to my senses, but hey, I suposed to be talking about Chuck
    here.

So, he stars as Moses, the film's a big hit with the repressed people of '50s
USA, and Chuck's now the biggest thing in Hollywood since Jane Russell's
boobs (See a connection there?  Boobs -- Heston, Heston -- boobs?  No?  OK,
    forget it.), and what is superstar Chuck's next film. . . . . . . . .

THREE VIOLENT PEOPLE (1956)  What the f**k!!!  Who the hell remembers this
movie?  Well, I do, though I wasn't born when it came out.  It's a western
about these three violent people, who get violent with each other, and it all
ends in violence.  Chuck plays this ex-Confederate, ex-captain guy who's
violent and he marries Anne Baxter, who played like his sister or girlfriend
or something in the last movie "The Ten Commandments," and she's sometimes
violent, but it mostly just involves slapping Chuck in the face, BUT Chuck's
got this brother, Tom Tryon, and he's missing an arm because when they were
kids like Chuck got it cut off, so now this brother is all pissed-off and
violent.  Believe it or not, Jamie Farr and Robert Blake are in it, too.
They get violent, and Forrest Tucker is in it, too, and he gets violent.  In
fact, they should have callled this "Lots of Violent People."   It's no "Wild
Bunch," but for '56 I guess pretty violent.

TOUCH OF EVIL (1958)  More violence.  This is one of Chuck's best movies.  It
just recently got restored because the studio, Universal, hated it and cut it
in a way nobody has liked, except somebody at Universal, I guess.  It's a
pretty famous movie.  Chuck plays a Mexican in it.  It was a stretch for
Chuck to play a Mexican, so Chuck decided the best way to do it would be
without a Mexican accent.  Remember before that boob/Heston thing I brought
up before?  Anyway, Chuck had one really good idea for this movie, and that
was to have Orson Welles direct.  Welles directed the shit out of this movie,
and he looks like shit in it -- really bad.  If you've never seen this movie,
I'd try to see it because it's a good movie to see.

THE BIG COUNTRY (1958)  This is a not so good western movie.  It's big, it's
well-directed by William Wyler, it's got lots of stars in it, but it's not
that great -- though it has a great score.  Chuck's not really the star of
it, he's just one of them.  This is the movie LordTZero saw a while ago where
Gregory Peck plays this sea captain who travels out west to marry this girl
and ends up in a big fight with Chuck.  They kick the shit out of each other
for sure, but no one wins.  I think that's supposed to be the point of this
movie, but after the fight there's still like another hour of the movie to
go, so I guess it had more points to make, but they're lost on me.  I
actually like Berl Ives and Chuck Conners best in this movie.  They're this
father and son who head this White-trash bunch that live in the desert, AND
in fact, POTA fans, the patch of desert they have their ranch on is the same
piece of ground in Red Rock Canyon where Ursus' Army marched over in BENEATH.
For that reason I recommend renting this movie, and for the Peck/Heston
    fight -- it's good.

THE BUCCANEER (1958) This movie isn't good, in fact it's pretty bad and not
one of my favorites, but I bring it up (Ha!  Bring it up!  Get it?) because
it's the second movie where Chuck played Andrew Jackson.  He's an old "Old
Hickery" in this movie, and so wears a big, white wig and lots of makeup.  In
fact, he kind of looks dead in this movie.  Let's move on because the next
    one is really good....

BEN-HUR (1959)  Alright!!!  YEEEE HAAAA!!!!! as Alex would say.  This is
prime Chuck here -- the movie he got his Oscar for.  The movie he likes best.
Chuck's favorite.  I'm sure you've seen it, but did you know that the writer
Gore Vidal worked uncredited on the script, and that Gore Vidal is gay, and
that he sort of made the relationship between  Judah Ben-Hur and Messala kind
of 'suggestive'?  Well, when Judah and Messala, who were boyhood friends,
first see each other again as adults in this movie, it's looks like they're
REALLY glad to see one another -- Heston has tears in his eyes --, and the
first thing they do is grab their spears and 'chuck' 'em.  I don't know about
you, but it seems kind of gay to me.  Later, when Judah refuses to do what
Messala wants, Messala gets so pissed-off at Judah, he has him thrown in
chains and forced to row a boat with a lot of other, mostly naked guys.  Is
that gay, or what?  BUT don't tell Chuck this!  Heston goes absolutely
ape-shit when it's even brought up!   Chuck, Chuck, Chuck.... So Ben-Hur was
gay -- there's nothing wrong with that.  He still wins the chariot race.
And, Chuck.... you're so handsome when you win the race, all sweaty and
everything.  Hey!!!  What the hell am I saying?

WRECK OF THE MARY DEARE (1959)  This movie is okay.  Chuck's just the co-star
next to Gary Cooper.  There's a wreck of a ship in it, the Mary Deare, hence
the title.  I haven't seen it in years.  Let's move on....

EL CID (1961)  Oh, boy!  Chuck's back in armour in this one, fighting the
Moors to save Spain.  He fights, he kill's Sophia Loren's dad, he fights, he
marries Sophia Loren, he fights, they have kids, he fights... you get the
picture.  It goes on for like three hours.  I think this is the movie that
put the pond in ponderous.  Chuck's such a goody, goody superhero in it that
I think he's kind of a stiff, in fact at the end he IS a stiff.  I'm not
kidding, he's a dead guy at the end of this movie -- he's still fighting, but
    he's dead!   Check it out!

THE PIGEON THAT TOOK ROME (1962)  I only mention this one so you'll belive me
when I say that Chuck once made a movie called "The Pigeon That Took Rome."
Otherwise, you can forget about this picture -- nearly everyone else on the
planet has.  Why should we be special?

DIAMOND HEAD (1962)  This is a movie set in Hawaii where Chuck is this
pineapple baron who's a bigot and when his sister, the lovely Yvette Mimieux
(YEEEE HAAAA!), decides she's going to marry a full-blooded Hawaiian native,
the lovely James Darren, Chuck starts shitting bricks.  Chuck is a real
bastard in this movie.  His character here makes Taylor look like a nice guy.
Chuck's such a bastard in this one they should have called the movie
    "Diamond DickHead,"  but they didn't.

55 DAYS AT PEKING (1962)  Chuck in China during the 1900 Boxer Rebellion.  He
stiffly plays a stiff-necked U.S. Marine who helps British ambassador, David
Niven, fight off Chinese guys out to kill all the foreigners they can find.
This ponderous movie goes on for nearly three hours, but seems to last more
like 55 days, hence the title.

THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD (1965)  NOT the greatest movie ever made.  This
story about the life and death of somebody named Jesus Christ is so full of
cameos by nearly every 'star' in Hollywood that it's nearly impossible to
take its story seriously.  Chuck plays John the Baptist.  He's real hairy and
wears like a bear skin or something.  He sort of looks like a caveman.  He
also loses his head.  Roddy McDowall is also in this movie, and Sal Mineo,
but then I could name everyone who was anyone back then -- they were probably
in it.  The only reason for we POTA fans to look at this movie, besides Chuck
and Roddy, is that it was shot in Glen Canyon before it was flooded to make
Lake Powell -- where Chuck would crash his spaceship in another movie.  In
fact, the sets for this film are still supposed to be at the bottom of the
lake.  Perhaps Chuck's bearsuit is down there, too.

THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY (1965)  This film is about how Michelangelo and
Pope Julius II didn't get along, but how the Sistine Chapel got painted
anyway.  It's dull, but nicely photographed by Leon Shamroy, who would
photograph this other Chuck movie.  This is also the movie that Chuck likes
to remind us he played a genius in.  He reminds us and he reminds us.  What
he DOESN'T remind us is that Michelangelo was GAY!  He was GAAAAAYYYY!   Hear
me, Chuck?   Chuck don't like to hear that.

MAJOR DUNDEE (1965)  This is another Chuck Western, directed by Sam
Peckinpah, and co-starring Richard Harris and James Coburn.  I like this film
even though it's a mess that was butched in editing by its studio and has a
very annoying score, but Chuck is SOOOO Chuck in this film you gotta love it.
They shot it in Mexico and Chuck tells the story that during filming he
waited in the front room of a cathouse while Peckinpah banged some teenage
prositute.  Can you imagine banging a postitute while Chuck waits for you
outside?  I can't watch this movie without thinking about that.

THE WAR LORD (1965)  Hey!!!  HEADS UP POTA FANS!  If you've never seen this
film, or never even heard of it, well, Where the hell have you been?  It's
directed by this guy named Franklin J. Schaffner, stars Chuck, co-stars
Maurice Evans, and even has Woodrow "Maximus" Parfrey in it.  Chuck plays
this Norman knight back in the 11th Century who has to defend this piece of
ground along the coast of what's now Belgium against Viking dudes.  Chuck has
a funny looking haircut in this one and fights Vikings on his horse and on
foot, with swords and arrows, at at one point wearing nothing but a diaper.
He also doesn't get along with his brother too well, is frustrated so takes a
woman from the village to his bed, and pisses just about everyone off.  But
Richard Boone plays like his nanny and if anybody messes with Chuck, Boone
hits them over the head with a club.  I know it sounds silly, but this movie
is actually really cool, although it, too, was butched in editing by its
    studio.  Definately check it out.

Oh, damn!!!  I got to end it here.  Time has run out for me, but I'll be back
to finish Chuck off later -- I just gotta watch out for Richard Boone.  Oh
    yeah, he's dead.

Subject: [pota] Charlton Heston -- Superstar!

Oh, My God!

Hey! I went to the Dark Horse website and used the Ape Name Generator. You
put in your name and it gives you an ape name. My name is Jikaker. Don't
    wear it out.

Yeah! The news program at E! showed the whole trailer (minus the Fox logo,
the stuff about Burton and the narration). I'm going to watch their "Coming
Attractions" program in 30 minutes to see if they show everything.

It's been great. See you guys next time. Welcome back, Brian! No more

What, and suck on gorilla spit?    Actually, about smoking in Taylor's ship.
. . . That was kind of dumb of the filmmakers -- in the oxygen-rich air of
the cabin the last thing you'd want to do is light a cigar.  I think Heston
was smoking that cigar in PLANET as a tribute to the director.  Franklin J.
Schaffner was always smoking cigars, which in the long run did him in.  He
died of throat cancer in 1989.

.htmlI think it was Jeff K.  who said the new trailer was on E! News Weekend.

Well, it will be repeated Monday morning at 2 A.M. (or late Sunday night if
    you prefer).   That's 2 A.M. EST.  Monday.

I'll set my VCR to record it and we'll see.  I watched E!'s Coming
Attractions yesterday and they didn't have it on.

I hope that the next issue of Total Movie magazine will have it on their DVD,
then I can get perfect freeze frames!
