Rory, that cover is excellent. You'd have inspired me to try my hand at it
myself, except that (a) I don't have a DVD player or the DVD set anyway, and
(b) I'm just too lazy.
Top notch effort though. If only you had a job at Fox.

The latest thing to bother me is that one of the female ape characters (I
don't know which one, I've been trying to avoid all the coverage) has a
rather silly hairstyle. It's like a Toyah-style 80s effort. Bizarre.

So how does that relate to DVD and TV then? What's a non-anamorphic transfer
compared to an anamorphic one?

These run-downs of Heston's films are quite interesting, but promise me

Yeah, I know what you mean. I think Ari and the other one played by Lisa
Maria kind of look like Michael Jackson. They could be a major distraction
in the film.

So how does that relate to DVD and TV then? What's a non-anamorphic transfer

Alright, let me try to clear this up for everyone. There is no true
'anamorphic' process going on with DVDs that are 'anamorphic.' It's only
called that because if you play it back in that mode on your DVD player, the
picture will looked squeezed on a regular TV.
You see there are now TVs that have aspect ratios called 16X9. They are
wider than regular televisions and they're all over Europe and Japan now, but
are just getting to the States.
Anyway, DVDs that are in 'anamorphic,' or the better term 'enhanced for
16X9,' have encoded picture information that makes it possible for them to be
properly viewed on these 16x9 TV sets. These TV also have progessive scan
capabilities which increase the horizontal resolution by interlacing the scan
lines.
In this way with a DVD enhanced for 16X9, and a 16X9 TV monitor, or a
rear-prjection, or front-projection, 16X9 display, you can see the films in
greater detail and purer color using componet red, green, and blue inputs.
DVDs that are NOT enhanced for 16X9 when played on these wider TVs don't have
the improved resolution -- like that current APES DVDs.
Have you all got that?!!! If you'd like a TV system like this be prepared
at the present time to spend thousands of dollars.
By the way, those of you who own DVDs have DVDs that are enhanced for 16X9,
you've probably just haven't bothered to read the little writing on the back
that tells you so.

I'm with you on this one Al. That was a great look!
What the hell possessed them to go for these looks . . . Satan?
They could have done a much better job on the hair styles.
It reminds me of the awful towel dried ratty look popularized
by MTV VJ Nina Blackwood! Yuck! There's many a gal I might have like if she
hadn't made herself unattractive with a bad hairstyle. I hate to be
superficial...but girls do it all the time, so what the hell. Don't think
so? A rockstar friend of mine had all the action he could handle until he
cut his blonde dreadlocks off. Looking like a regular Joe he couldn't get
the time of day. <.html

Correct me if I'm wrong someone. I should study more for my film class. But
those damn essays take a big chunk of my time. I believe that it goes
something like this.
There are a number of ways they do a windscreen. The 70 mm is very popular.
IMAX is great but very expensive. I believe it uses the 70 mm but the film
but is laid on it's side so they can make the print even wider. Anamorphic
uses standard 35 mm film. The frame is shrunk with an anamorphic lens when
shot and then expanded with another when projected. When they transfer a
film to video or DVD they use the same process. However a non-anamorphic
transfer is either done from the windscreen projection either that or they
can cheat by just putting black borders at the top and bottom to give it a
windscreen look. <.html

|
.html If and when the TV show gets released on DVD, what kind of extras can they
throw on there? The episodes I saw recently were taped off of the Sci-Fi
Channel and had short intros by Roddy McDowell, talking about the Galen
character, etc, so I guess they could include that. I seem to remember Roddy
appearing on a TV show (Carol Burnett?) in the 70s in full ape regalia, so
that would be cool to see again. And of course there is the legendary "Aged
Galen" footage that everyone talks about but no one has a copy of.
Interviews and commentary by James Naughton, Ron Harper and Booth Coleman
would be nice. I always wondered why Naughton was the only one from the show
in BEHIND. I figure Harper and Coleman are cool with the show since they both
sell autographs on the Time Machine site (Naughton does not). Does anyone
have any insight as to what these three are up to now and what kind of
memories they have of the show?
It would also be cool to see some outtakes, commercials for the show, and
that type of stuff, but somehow I think that the DVDs (and the videos for
that matter) will be a relatively cheap and slapped together affair without
any extras. Does anyone else have any ideas?

| Subject: TV Show Revisted |
|
.html Awhile back I wrote a lengthy email entitled "What Would You Do?" that
basically was my Fantasy Island approach about how I would rework the whole
POTA film series given a chance (I think four people here read it).
Anyways, someone asked (I think it was Ken) what I would do for the TV series
in a similar situation (total creative control, etc). Well, here's what I
would do:
First of all, I would schedule it on a decent night to give it a chance. I'm
not sure what the TV schedule was like back then, but I'm sure a decent time
slot could be found where this show would shine.
In my last email, I recast a lot (see how that works Jeff?) of the parts
(Robert DeNiro as Aldo, Richard Dreyfuss as Caesar, etc). For the series I
would not recast any of the main roles. I quite like the performances. I
think Ron Harper was perfect as the steady, determined Alan Virdon. James
Naughton was also good was the carefree Peter Burke. I would also bring back
Roddy McDowell (he has since forgiven me for the whole Dreyfuss incident) to
add a little credibilty to the cast. Booth Coleman and Mark Lenard would also
be brought back in their semi-starring roles. Perhaps I could get some of the
bigger television stars of the day to make cameos and guest appearances
(McLean Stevenson as Galen's uncle......nah....just kidding).
As far as the episodes go, I won't be giving any lengthy plot summaries, but
I would like to see the series work more as a cohesive unit. For instance,
the disc that Virdon was so desperate to retrieve, would be an actual plot
device for further episodes down the road. Also, each episode would less like
"The Fugitive" (as Naughton put it in BEHIND), and flow from episode to
episode
One thing that kind of bugged me about the original series is how Virdon and
Burke were experts at everything. I can buy into the fact that Virdon knew a
lot about farming and Burke knew morse code, but to have them be experts at
curing malaria, fighting poison gas, building a hang glider, etc. was a bit
too much. Is there anything these guys couldn't do? I guess what I am saying
is that I would make them a bit more human.
To launch the series, I would have a two-hour television movie that tied
directly into the POTA film series. In the pilot, Virdon and Burke would be
seen training in ANSA facilities with Taylor, Dodge, Landon and Stewart (all
the original actors, including Chuck, would reprise their film roles). In
this movie, it would be learned that Virdon was the original choice to
command Taylor's colonization mission, but he declined because of his
commitment to his family (setting up further character development down the
road).
Then, after Taylor never made contact with ANSA, Virdon, Burke and the other
astronaut (his name escapes me) would be dispatched on a rescue mission (if
you recall, my original sequel to POTA did away with Brent and his mission)
to find Taylor and his crew. Something goes wrong during Virdon and Burke's
flight and they are forced off 800 light years off of Taylor's trajectory.
They land on the POTA (the same place Taylor did, only 800 years earlier).
The series evolves from this point, much like it originally did.
After a successful run on primetime (10 years) the series would eventually
run it's course. The 2 hour finale would finally find Virdon and Burke
discovering a way to get home (that disc really came in handy). When they
arrive back, it is now 20 years later Earth time (taking place directly after
the events of my version of BATTLE). Virdon and Burke are shocked to find
find that Earth is now overun by apes (much like Merou was in the novel). The
series would end that way, with the pair faced with a new plight to find a
way to survive on the PLANET OF THE APES.
So...that's what I would do. What would you do?

More great ideas. Gee, where were you when they were making this series in the first place? You could have been the first pre-teen TV
executive.
A 10 year run, huh? That's optimistic. That would have taken us up to '84. Cyndi Lauper could have played Galen's love interest and Joan
Collins and Linda Evans could have played their respective In-laws.
I'm not taking the piss, Matt, I'm just being silly.
Anyhow, further to your concept I probably would have taken Galen back w/ the astronauts ( incidentally the third one was called Jones)
where he would have to struggle with becoming another catalyst for further ape domination or remaining loyal to his human buddies.
Best,
KEN <.html

Yeah, E! News showed the full trailer. It gave a much better idea of it then
the shorter ET trailer, but still, I learned a long time ago . . . Never
judge a flick by it's trailer.
As for the chimpettes, Why looky there! Nina Blackwood and Janet Jackson on
the Planet of the Apes! I'll say this. It's no Zira style, but it is a big
step up from that stupid Bo Derek look they had her in. That was just
hideous! <.html

Mr. President, a word of explanation. . . . .
*Lynne* works at a job that keeps her very busy and so she doesn't often get

|
.html .htmlMatt,
One of the things I'd love to change with the TV show is the humans being
civilized. I liked them better as they were in the original book and film --
animals! I also don't like it when they're called "humans." Is it just
me, or does saying things like, "Kill all the humans!" or "It's always those
'humans' that ruin everything!" sound a little silly? I think John
Travolta proved that in the dreadful "Battlefield Earth."
Remember in the first film Dr. Zaius would say things like "Man is a
nuisance" or "Man has no understanding" or "I have always known about man."
Think how sillier it would sound if instead of "man" he'd said "human."
What if it was "Beware the beasts called Humans"? BLAHHHH!!!! Man is,
like, Man, it's just so much cooler!
So, that's one thing I'd do. Also, it would have made the television show so
much more interesting if every week the astronauts were forced to humiliate
themselves by having to act like animals in order not to get killed or
something. You also could have had so many great scenes of apes being
shocked when these astronauts spoke.
And, since "men" are animals, the fugitives would travel from village to
village and meet... APES!!! There were far too many episodes that were
mostly about "humans." BLAAAAHHHHH!!!!!
The only men I care about in such a show are the astronauts. And you also
could have had some fun with the 'female' man animals getting crushes on the
astronauts. And the astronauts saying like, "Oh well, what the hell!"
Another thing I would have done with the show is reintroduced the "Forbidden
Zone." (How much I would have loved to have seen them film something in a
desert setting on the TV show.) And, I'd have had some adventures in it,
entire episodes or series of episodes. All sorts of odd ape tribes, -- and,
yes, maybe even crazy 'human' ones, perhaps dare I say "mutants"? -- could
have been introduced. You could have had apes that came from an area they
called "Vagas" or something, or apes that spoke of a vast 'canyon' deep in
the Forbidden Zone (the Grand Canyon).
I also would have made Zaius and Urko smarter, especially Urko. There would
have been none of this stuff with them not understanding things or having
stupid ideas about the way things were. They would have had access to the
'secret' scared scrolls, and so I'd have always given hints that they knew
more than they were saying and that they were very sly and, therefore,
dangerous. Often shows such as this are only as good as their villains, and
you have to admit that Zaius and Urko weren't very good villians.
I also would have given orders to the writers that they were to write to
ADULTS, and to take a serious approach at all times to the material. I think
in that way the POTA TV show would have been much better.
Also a different night than Friday for the telecasts would have been nice,
too.
Well, Matt, you asked. "So how does it taste?"

I think Wahlberg will be great. He is always good as a character that is in a
foreign situation, a bit over his head (Boogie Nights, Three Kings). I think
he should have gotten an Oscar for Boogie Nights, but he wasn't even
nominated.
By the way, did everyone hear the recent quote from Wahlberg when he was
asked about taking over for Heston as the lead human in POTA. Wahlberg
replied (and I'm paraphrasing here) "Well I may have been Dirk Diggler, but
that's still a pretty big loincloth to fill). LOL!

You're right!
In the '70s, some very bad network research supposedly showed that Friday nights at 8, was a great time for fantasy series...
This, then, was ridiculous... Young folks, who they figured were actally part of these series' potential audences, were GOING OUT... Young Jewish guys (10-13), who were always part of a SF show's potential audience--as the networks SUPPOSEDLY realized, were, some times at least, in Temple... (Back in he'70s--as I presume, today, many Temples, like Christian Churches, had, as part of their requirements for young people "graduating" religious study, was for a certain number of mandatory attendances, at services. Jewish folk, since the '30s, had been a HUGE part of the science ficton demographic.)
Other, adults, were INDEED watching SANFORD AND SON, and CHICO... Today, the equivalent would be schedling POTA, against MILLIONAIRE, or, (and I hate even writing this word), SURVIVOR...

That's the deal -- She briefly changed her name to Augusta Summerland and
appeared in "Airport '75." She had no scenes with Chuck, though. I think

Matt
Alright, here's pretty much all I know. It's from the book "The Fox That Got
Away" by Stephen M. Silverman about how the Zanucks lost 20th Century-Fox in
the early Seventies.
It's from page 303:
"After five years, the marriage between Richard Zanuck and Linda Harrison
dissolved. In 1974 she sought a divorce on the grounds of irreconcilable
differences. Two months after filing. Harrison asked the court for an order
restraining Dick Zanuck from contacting her, following an incident in which
she claimed he had violently beaten both her and her spiritual adviser, a
65-year-old man.
"He struck me, sat on top of me, and after restraining me with his legs and
arms he repeatedly and viciously struck my face with his forearms in karate
fashion, causing me extreme pain and suffering," her affidavit stated.
The elderly companion, whom Harrison identified as her 'minister and
spiritual advisor,' was Vincentii Turriziani of the Risen Christ Foundation
of Vincentii Turriziani. Harrison claimed that her husband punched and
kicked Turriziani, smashed a statue, and struck the spititual advisor on the
head with it.
"He pulled several paintings from the wall, breaking the glass of some of
them and also deliberately kicking his foot through a painting entitled 'The
Risen Christ,' which he knew had a special religious significance," she said.
Harrison said that starting in 1972 the marriage had become 'difficult' due
to Zanuck's 'extremely violent disposition.' Harrison had sought spiritual
guidance from Turriziani in an effort to save the union."
Well, that's her side of the story anyway. I think Harrison's 'spiritual
advisor' ended up with most of the $3 million divorce settlement she got from
Zanuck, AND I've been told she slept with this guy.
Anything else you want to know, Matt?

Starlog, issue #213. Has an article with Linda H. Here's what she
said...STARLOG: Why were you billed as "Augusta Summerland" in Airport 1975?
HARRISON: [Laughs] Well-l-l, you know life can make its turns! I was married
to Dick, and for one reason or another, I got involved with a guru-which was
the "in" thing at the time. The guru claimed in his cult that you change from
who you were born, and so as you make that change , you need a new name
[Augusta Summerland]. Unfortunately, this guru wanted to make movies from his
screenplays. And for whatever reason, he put a terrible wedge through my
relationship with Dick. It ended that I left Dick. I was analyzed during that
time; I think so much, at 20 years old, was thrown at me. I came from a small
town of 2,000 and much of what was given me there, the values, have put me in
good stead. But I think that I got "lost" somewhere, my "identity". Or
woman's lib made us think that we were supposed to be unfulfilled.. Or
whatever got into my "being" at the time-it was rough. I left Dick, and it
was very hard." So, aint that somethin? John <.html

It sure sounds like the POTA list has a Vortex Syndrome. At least, one that is starting. Anyone else have situations like this? I'd like to hear about them!

Well, I'll tell you, Matt, and everybody else, I've grown up with these
people who made and starred in "Planet of the Apes" as like icons for me, but
the more I learn about them as real people the less I want to know. Nuff

.html .htmlHey,
Have any of you noticed the PLANET OF THE APES poster that hangs over Eric's
bed on TV's "That '70s Show"?
If you want to check it out watch the episode on tonight, Wednesday at 8 PM
EST on -- what else? -- Fox.
They funny thing about it is that the poster they have on the set is the
recent British quad reprint which is for sale on eBay all the time -- and of
course didn't exist in the '70s!!!

much longer scene with the "Man-Apes" that were on the road of evolution to
man. It's really a good book so far. One of my goals for this year was to
read it and now I am.
