Subject: Trailer Roundup
.html
OK, the Summer Movie Season has officially begun. So here's my opinion of
the top movies based on their trailers:

1. "PEARL HARBOR" - all the awe that money can buy; strikes an appropriate
patriotic note. But knowing the director's past work, is that the only note
he will strike?

2. "PLANET OF THE APES" - unique visuals, an excellent villian and seemingly
a point to it

3. "FINAL FANTASY" - said to be the first movie with photo-realistic CGI
people. They look pretty good but still look animated. The visuals are
dazzling even if I don't know what the hell is going on. It has a James
Cameron feel to it, which isn't bad for a sci-fi flick to have.
Unfortunately, people seem to prefer their science-fiction live-action
(witness the fates of "Iron Giant", "Titan A.E.").

4. "A.I." - As far as I know there's only a teaser so far. It's short but
intriguing. The most unique ad campaign this summer (that website scares
me!). Seems as much Kubrick (the originator of the project) as Spielberg
(who picked it up as a tribute to the late "2001" director).

5. "TOMB RAIDER" - Yeah, yeah, it's Indiana Jones with breasts but it's done
with style and Angelina Jolie is dynamite!

6. "JURASSIC PARK 3" - As usual, the dinos look great but the movie will
only be as good as the use they're put to. Need a new setting other than an
island.Good dialogue wouldn't hurt.

7. "THE MUMMY RETURNS" - Bad CGI, bad Indiana Jones moments. Brendan Fraser
has some funny lines.

Yeah, they are going to put everything out in July to tie in with the movie.
They are going to try and bankrupt me.

Subject: PLANET imperfections (Part One)
.html
.htmlHey Everyone,

Well, maybe this gets posted right away, or next week. . . . Anyway, here's
some things I've noticed in PLANET OF THE APES that I want to share with you
all.  If you have a DVD player and of course PLANET on DVD it'll be easier to
find these things, but if you just have VHS -- and isn't it about time you
got a DVD player?  Hell, they're cheap enough now, AND they are WONDERFUL! --
I'll try to describe things so you can find them.

Now, many of you may not what these imperfections pointed out.  Once you know
they're there, I can promise you you'll see them from now on whenever you
watch the film, so you've been warned!

I see these things because I swear I've probably watched PLANET on VHS, or
CED disc, or Laserdisc, and now DVD, more than 300 times!!   I'm not kidding!
 Maybe even 400+ times -- I don't know, I stopped counting after 250 video
viewings and that was back in the mid-eighties.

Anyway, there's always something I spot in eacxh viewing I've never noticed.
Yesterday -- and I only watch a little of the movie to get the times of
things -- I saw, I think for the first time, how Nova really kicks a gorilla
in the face when she's captured.  IT WAS COOL, and there's even a sound
effect covering it, so the filmmakers knew it was there.

It can be seen on the DVD in Chapter 9, hitting the step button (freeze
frame) at 34 minutes, 22 seconds (34:22).  Step forward and watch as she
kicks one of the gorillas right in the puss, then play it back with the sound
up and you can hear the sound effect.  For those with VHS or Laserdiscs
(still some I guess), it's the scene where Nova runs out of the trench during
the hunt, and the two gorillas net her and drag her off.

Joe Russo (who may or may not be having the 'POTA Revisited' book coming out
soon -- I need to check back with him and see what Fox is up to to make his
life more miserable) tells me there's a frame during the hunt where one of
Linda Harrison's boobs pop out, but try as I might yesterday, I couldn't find
it.  He must have been dreaming.

Okay, here's something else to notice in PLANET. . . .

When the time displays are frist shown in a close-up at the beginning of the
film, notice the plastic molding around the Earth Time display.  Hey!
Couldn't anyone see this and file it off.  It makes the thing look really
cheap -- which I guess it was.  Every time I see this it bugs me.  You can
view it on the DVD by freeze-framing at 42 seconds in Chapter One.  Another
to think about that's interesting when you watch the first scene in PLANET in
the spaceship cabin is that this scene was shot AFTER the scenes when the
ship is sinking.  So, you're looking at a set that had been completely soaked
with hoses, then dried off and cleaned up!

In Chapter 3, hit freeze at 6 minutes, 12 seconds (6:12).  This is when the
spaceship hits the water.  Step forward one frame at a time and dig that wild
water effects shot.  It looks to me like it might have been lifted from one
of Irwin Allen's "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" things, in fact the
footage has so many scratches on it, that may very well be the case.

In Chapter 3, at 7:29, you'll see that the corpse of Stuart has its arms on
its chest, then at 7:35 you see the arms at the body's side.  This has been
pointed out by others, and was something I'd never noticed until just a
couple years ago.  It still doesn't bother me much.

What does bother me VERY MUCH comes in the next shot and can be seen starting
at Chapter 3, 7:37.   This is the first time we see the exterior of the
spaceship.  Of course it's that the escape hatch is already blown off.   I
don't know how Schaffner could have not seen this.  I guess he just thought
the swooping helicopter shot was just so great for our first view of the ship
that he just HAD to use it.  Also notice as you step forward through the shot
that the side panel is off as well and you can see into the prop ship.  You
can see a couple two by fours, I think.

At 9 minutes, and 6 seconds (9:06) the hatch blows off.  Step forward through
it.  What you can also see is that when the charge goes off to blow the hatch
-- the windows also blow out!!  And that side panel blows up as if it were
made of rubber, though I asked the guy who has the icarus site and he tells
me that the side panel was made of corrugated aluminum.  He also told me that
the panel was left off probably because of the heat on the days they shot
those scenes.

Still, I'd like to see a re-mastered version of PLANET where ther use CGI
effect to fix these things with the spaceship -- well, that hatch being off
in its first shot anyway -- I don't want to get carried away with that kind
of stuff.

Anyway, let's see if this gets posted, and I'll continue with pointing out
things I've noticed in PLANET later.

things -- I saw, I think for the first time, how Nova really kicks a gorilla
in the face when she's captured.

Subject: [pota] PLANET imperfections (Part One)

Hey Everyone,

"Cleopatra" cost $44 Million back in '63.  It would be like $200 Million

Beautiful picture and sound.  Roddy was good in that movie, too.

The Summer movie season kicks off today with "The Mummy Returns" (I know
what Rory is going to see tonight). I've never seen any of these new"Mummy"s
because I thought the FX looked cheesy and I didn't like the tone of the ads
(bad jokes). It's not getting good reviews but the first movie out of the
summer gate usually does well.

My newspaper today points out that only "Pearl Harbor" and "Apes" have
their respective weekends to themselves, with no big movie opening up
against them, usually a sign of respect from the other studios. Well, I
guess the Mummy does too, but that's because it came out so damn early.

  Let the hype begin!                                   - - - - Jeff K.

I honestly don't know why they made a Mummy 2, I really didn't like the first one.
It's just so hard to top that type of Indiana Jones Adventure that anything else just seems 2nd rate.

As for Apes, Jurassic Park 3 opens July 18th, one week before apes so there there will be some tension there. too close to call at this point, Sam Neil (original Jurassic Park actor) returns to this one. So this puppy is going to make some big Bucks at the box office.

Apes vs. Dino, Let's get ready to rumble!!

Awesome! I wasn't expecting it to be that great, only reason I saw it was because a friend wanted to see it. And so I went along, and to my shock and surprise this movie was really really good. Not perfect as no film is, but I'd say about 80% outstanding.

Beautiful picture and sound.  Roddy was good in that movie, too.

Wasn't TITANIC the most expensive?
It cost a little over 200 million.

moving, that's for sure. And Patricia Velasquez, WOW! I forget, was she in
the original? I'd say Mummy & Returns are pretty much Alan Quartermain with
bigger budgets. And I kind of enjoy counting the various references to other
films. OK anything Indiana Jones, but I also spotted King Kong, Baron
Munchausen, JP2, and Hello Dolly. Well, OK, not Hello Dolly, but you see

I've been trudging through the Eric Greene book (more on that when I finish it) and I came across something that confused me.

I was always under the impression that the female chimp Caesar shacks up with in the ape breeding center in CONQUEST was Lisa, but Green seems to think otherwise. On page 98 of the softcover version of the book, Greene writes:

"Caesar even learns of love and sex when he falls in love with the demure chimpanzee Lisa but is sent to the breeding annex to mate with a voluptuos and eager female chimpanzee. (Even in the ape world it seems women's roles ae divided into the stereotypes of either virgin or whore)."

Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Am I cracking up?

By the way, that last line is one of countless Greene pontifications that seem indicate that he is an over-analyzer.

Well, as far as I'm concerned that female chimpanzee waiting for insemination
in CONQUEST was NOT -- I repeat, WAS NOT -- Lisa!

I doubt very much if the bitchy Mrs. Riley would have lent her servant
she-ape out for so disgusting a service.  Besides, what would she do with a

Really, I wish you 'younger' APES' fans would show more logic!

By all means, Matt, finish Greene's book soon -- I can't wait to rip into it!

Really?? I never made the connection!

Concurrence on the anonymous female angle. Unlike Caesar, she was
probably classified as breeding stock and never auctioned. After all,
Ape Management had to have a way of keeping up with demand. And
considering the lackadaisical attitude of the humans who kept apes
it's unlikely that many private individuals bothered breeding apes to
raise from infancy themselves (quite a lengthy and specialized
process!). It's always easier to purchase the 'finished product'. /Mez

No, no you're not alone, Matt.

We had a fun day today.  We shot inserts for the re-release of the "Behind the Palnet of the Apes" DVD.

Here's a pic from this morning of Dr. Zaius giving the Director some pointers.

    Enjoy,

First of all, the new "Toyfare" is out. It has two different covers, one
of them is a Attar toy from Hasbro. Haven't seen that cover, though. Stores
seem to just have the other cover, some Japanese robot. Inside they give a
one page history of Ape toys from Megos to Medicoms. Also a page showing
toys for the new movie. Good pics, it looks like Hasbro sent them examples
(Thade looks great, much better than the godawful purple one at Toy Fair).
Most interesting, it says they are due in May, THIS month. No! Get out of
the way! I saw it first!

METAL HEADS: The current "Previews" has several "Ape" items, including 3
different metal lunchboxes, just like your dad used to take to school.

The new "Premiere" magazine predicts "Apes" will be #3 at the box office
this summer, with almost $200 million. #1 is "Pearl Harbor", #2 is "A.I.",
the Spielberg entry. Wrong! Michael Bay can't hold our interest for 3 hours,
no matter how much stuff he blows up. And "A.I." will just be too out there
for many people. That leaves "Apes" to rule the planet! Logical, isn't it?

"Comic Book Buyer's Guide": the new ish has a cover story of the new "Apes"
comics, as the creators wax philanthropic about their love of the originals
and what an honor it is to do the new one. The article also notes: "This
isn't your dad's "Planet of the Apes"". I didn't know my dad had one.

Also, be sure to check out the L.A. Times article about the new movie. It
can be linked from movieheadlines.net . The actual newspaper itself has a
production painting of the ape city and a nice panoramic shot of the final
thing. I like that the article actually interviewed the writer, William
Broyles. In this post-Wrier's strike world it's nice to see the writers get
some attention. He said he based the ape world on Ancient Rome. Can you say
    "Sparticus"?

Now, put down that mouse and go to your news stand.

I have a feeling the PLANET DVD on August 21st will just be a reissue of the
old one.   Buying it if it's anamorphic only makes sense if you have a 16X9
TV anyway -- which I don't, but would be under a lot of desire to get if they
    put POTA out in anamorphic.

If the new film does "Mummy Returns" like business, I'd expect Fox to do
something elaborate with the classic series on DVD in the future.  But,

.htmlI just watched the episode of "The Simpsons" I taped tonight.  Glad I did
because there during the show is the first TV spot for the new film.  Looks
good.  I'm glad Fox is starting early to push this film.  I'll bet the studio
    expects it to be HUGE.

Also, the latest issue of Premiere has some POTA items.  A picture of Tim
Roth wearing just his Chimp hands.  It says Roth talked to Roddy McDowall
while he was still alive about POTA, and Roth says, "He obviously had a glee
about the series, but we talked about how painful it was.  There was even
less flexibility with the makeup."  Roth also says "You get depressed by the
makeup sometimes, because you can't get out of it.  It's not like you can
    take it off at lunchtime."

On the next page is a cool photo of Thade grabbing a man by the neck during a
battle.  The item on the film itself says many things including, "Pressure
was intense to make a July release; the script was in flux, and Burton didn't
realize for two weeks that he had broken a rib while filming."  They predict
the movie will gross $190 Million.

But,
"Lawgiver, who knows about the future?"

Yeah, but you're covering ground I already covered. Did you get the e-mail about the new magazines ( including "Premiere")? And the Image website was already mentioned. Maybe you're not getting all the mail.

If they put "That's Hollywood" "Apes" special on DVD with the original film,

    3. But even if it's the same DVD again new fans will probably buy it.

I remember that "That's Hollywood" APES special back in the seventies, but as
I recall they just used footage from the films and the featurettes.  The
featurettes will be on the new "Behind" Special Edition, so I wouldn't expect
anybody to dig up that old "That's Hollywood."

What they SHOULD put on the re-release of PLANET is a photo gallery to end
all photo galleries.  Everything from the original concept paintings to
pre-production costume and set design sketches to behind-the-scenes shots to
posters and ads.  But you think Fox will do that?

Maybe on the S.E. of "Behind of the Apes"?

I did a search to see if there's official word on the new "Apes" DVDs. No luck. But Fox is releasing a new DVD of Jacobs' "Dr. Dolittle" on June 5 2001 to coincide with "Dr. D 2" . I don't know if that floats anyone's boat but I was planning on getting it. Glad I heard about this because the current "Dolittle" DVD is pricey and no extras. This looks like it will be an extended version (151 minutes? That's 2 and half hours).

There's a website petitioning for DVD release of "The Simpsons" (http://fly.to/simpsonsdvd ). I guess Fox will release them a season at a time like X-Files". I guess that means it'll be awhile for the POTA musical (though I think they should release a POTA version of the popular "Simpsons" toys to tie in with all the other stuff).

A review of Schaffner's "Patton" DVD ( http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/patton..html" ). This is the 1999 DVD. I hear a new "Patton" DVD is coming out this month?

.html Before I left Fox there were plans in place for a season by season DVD release of The Simpsons before the end of the year. Each with heaps of ( yet to be confirmed ) extras.
But as you rightly say, it'll be a while to wait for the "Fish Called Selma" episode.
Yes, the studios all seem to be embracing the DVD format. There's gold in them thar hills!!

The Murphy movie is "Dr. Dolittle," the Arthur P. Jacobs movie is "Doctor

I saw the second new POTA movie poster at the theater on Saturday, the one
with the gorilla army on it.  At the bottom is the film's credits and NOWHERE
-- NOWHERE!! -- is Pierre Boulle mentioned.  This kind of pisses me off.  I
hope he gets a mention in the movie's credit roll.
