    .html Okay Jeff and gang,

    Here's the poop:

Some of you already know that Image Entertainment is going to re-release the "Behind the Planet of the Apes" DVD with added footage and info.  It's a two DVD set and will include Roddy's entire sit-down interview (not seen in the original release).

We shot some scenes that will be used as chapter selection menus last Saturday.

So get your piggy banks ready, folks!  It's due out in July.

The Fox store site (www.foxstore.com ) says it's the Jacobs version that's being rereleased ("Doctor Dolittle", not "Dr. Dolittle"). Both are already available, maybe they're just doing a big push for both of them (Amazon doesn't say June 5 for the Murphy one, just "coming soon"). They say the new DVD comes in at 151m. and a 144m. version also exists. How long is the one on your DVD, Rory?

But Fox is releasing a new DVD of Jacobs' "Dr. Dolittle" on June 5 2001 to
    coincide with "Dr. D 2" . I don't know if that floats anyone's boat but I
was planning on getting it. Glad I heard about this because the current
"Dolittle" DVD is pricey and no extras. This looks like it will be an
extended version (151 minutes? That's 2 and half hours).

Amazon says that the "Dr. Dolittle" DVD to be released on June 5th is of the
    Eddie Murphy movie!

The Murphy movie is "Dr. Dolittle," the Arthur P. Jacobs movie is "Doctor
    Dolittle."

Yes, I noticed that. The trailer also doesn't mention Boulle, funny since Burton's movie seems to be closer to the book than the original was (they even gave Boulle credit on the TV series!). I don't know, has enough time passed that they don't have to give credit? What are the rights after an author dies?
I'm very angry that no one at Fox or even Zanuck bothered to call Natalie Trundy and say, "Hey, we're continuing your husband's life's work, should make a tidy profit. How you been?" Even after Zanuck left Fox he still went over to the Jacobs' for ping-pong matches. It was a ritual. Natalie showed me some pictures. Walter Matheu would go, Eric braeden. And one set of pictures shows Zanuck arriving in a T-shirt , I think it had a logo for a Warner Bros. movie on it (after he got booted out of Fox, he worked at Warners for about a year. Anyway, after he arrives, Zanuck strips off the shirt and has an "Escape from the POTA" shirt on underneath. He has a conspiratorial smile on his face. Well, where's his loyalty now? All I know is they BETTER invite Natalie to the premiere or Fox will hear from me.

I like the design and look of the new items. You could imagine the same
    "look"

I saw the second new POTA movie poster at the theater on Saturday, the one
with the gorilla army on it.  At the bottom is the film's credits and NOWHERE
-- NOWHERE!! -- is Pierre Boulle mentioned.  This kind of pisses me off.  I
hope he gets a mention in the movie's credit roll.

    Ok.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is a "NATO" presentation?

Also, I have never come across the term "DAILIES" - what does that mean?

While I'm at it, are outtakes deleted scenes or bloopers (or a combination)?

As I understand it, dailies are the initial sort of scenes, sort of rough
cuts etc, that are generally used to give the director an idea of how it's
going. For example, at the end of the day (I think this is where the term
comes from?) the director will sit down and watch the scenes that have been
shot and think "nope, that need's re-shot" or "I'll need to edit that" or
    whatever.

If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me!

I think probably it has a lot more to do with pulling power and credibility.  In the good old days there were people who knew the name "Pierre Boulle" and might have wanted to see a movie based on one of his novels (also some "Bridge On the River Kwai audience may have been interested - and possibly disappointed!!!).  There was also the credibility factor - to say it is based on a story by a credible author would tend to give it more weight.

But the modern target audience (young I would say, based on the age of the lead actors!) would say "Pierre Who?  Bridge On the WHAT?"  So I doubt there will be more thana fine print mention.

However Zanuck has no excuse.  His memory may be failing but you would think he might have involved Natalie - I would have thought a cameo might have been appropriate too for such a key player in the Apes phenomenon.

I saw the second new POTA movie poster at the theater on Saturday, the one
with the gorilla army on it.  At the bottom is the film's credits and NOWHERE
-- NOWHERE!! -- is Pierre Boulle mentioned.  This kind of pisses me off.  I
hope he gets a mention in the movie's credit roll.

have to give credit? What are the rights after an author dies?

I'm very angry that no one at Fox or even Zanuck bothered to call Natalie
Trundy and say, "Hey, we're continuing your husband's life's work, should
make a tidy profit. How you been?" Even after Zanuck left Fox he still went
over to the Jacobs' for ping-pong matches. It was a ritual. Natalie showed

pictures shows Zanuck arriving in a T-shirt , I think it had a logo for a
Warner Bros. movie on it (after he got booted out of Fox, he worked at
Warners for about a year. Anyway, after he arrives, Zanuck strips off the
shirt and has an "Escape from the POTA" shirt on underneath. He has a

    .html Hey Alan & Michael,

Al's right, "Dailies" are the scenes (actually shot the day or two prior) that members of production view after the film lab processes the exposed film stock.

Everyone pretty much uses "video assist" these days, thanx to an inovation by the king of comedy himself, Jerry Lewis , during the filming of the "Errand Boy" back in the early 1960's.  Video assist allows the director and crew to see an immediate video playback of scenes they are shooting without having to wait for the film processing lab to return the dailies (also known as "rushes").  Not as cool as going into a big dark room at lunch time and watching the day's work projected onto a big screen though.

A lot of the times in movie credits there is a line like "Based on characters
created by Pierre Boulle" (or something to that effect). In the original POTA
film and series, there were characters like Zaius, Zira, Cornelius and Nova
that shared their names (and characterzations) with counterparts in Boulle's
book. In the new film it's the same overall POTA concept, but we have a whole
new set of characters like Thade, Attar, Ari, Limbo, etc. Perhaps this is the
reason the new movie and poster don't credit Boulle (although I don't think
it would have killed Fox to do so).

Correct. He should still get credit just for the title of the film, even
though in french his title was Monkey Planet. I just re-read the book and
think it would have been interesting (if a little slow) to do it that way.

I recently completed copying my excellent Ltrbxd Apes films for a friend and
    had the sudden thought;

Battle ends in 2670 with the Lawgiver speaking to a mixed group of apes and
children. This is 1006 years before Taylor crashes on Earth (I always go by
the first films chronometer, perfering to think that Brent's was broken and
Taylors malfunctioned from being under the water). So what if by killing
Aldo and freeing those Humans, Ceasar changed history and Taylor and crew are
welcomed by a mixed group of Apes and Humans who have a peaceful, cooperative
society, rather than an antagonistic one? Taylor and crew could help them
start their own space program and possibly colonize the rest of the Solar
System, or at least explore the rest of post-nuclear Earth by helping them
re-develop flight and such. Of course then the mutants might have gotten so
frightened by the technological society of Apes and Humans that they may have
just whacked the entire world anyhow.
    Ah, it's a thought.

I think the future was somehow changed before that, since Lisa was the first

Yeah, I saw it and recorded it again last night during that comedy '70s show on Fox channel. I must have recorded this thing like 5 times already hoping to get a different one.

Sooner or later I'll have another one. Fox shows the commercial just about everynight on the Fox Channel now.

So, I guess there's just one version of the TV commercial now?   Well, it's
early yet, but I'll bet Fox is going to push this film hard.  I get the sense
they think they've got a huge hit here.

Yeah, I think there's just one for now. But I'm also looking for POTA Toy commercials, SNL Spoofs, Mad T.V. spoofs, opening night with the stars, StarZ Interviews, HBO Behind the scenes, E! Behind the scenes, Trailers and a whole lot more.

It will be one mega VHS Tape for the fans, I'm planning to finish it August covering at least 2 to 4 hours on two VHS Tapes. We should all work together here and keep each other posted on POTA Broadcasts.

The prize: A free copy for all on the e-group (just have to cover the shipping and tape cost) I don't want to burn a hole in my walet over this. :o)
Those who give a POTA broadcast that will end up on the tape will have this offer.

    All the best.

    Alex,

There are a lot of inferior quality bootleg tapes for sale around the place.

The cartoon has never been officially released.

The TV Series has been released in Australia and I can buy this for you.
However you will need a VCR that plays the Pal or Secam system.

Go towards the light, Alex! Michael sent my set of videos from Oz
last Friday and it was in my greedy little hands here in England
YESTERDAY (Wednesday) morning. Now that's what I call service!

You actually need a VCR *and* a TV that will play PAL or Secam -- or
you can just have the videos converted. Conversion shouldn't be a
problem for anyone in the US, altho you will have to shop around for
a good price. Ask your local video shops and check the Yellow Pages.

The collection itself is smashing. You get two boxes, each with 3
videos in their own jackets, covering all 14 eps. And every single
box/jacket is plastered with stunning photos from the series. The
front jacket of No. 5, for example, which contains 'The
Interrogation' and 'The Tyrant', features Virdon aiming a rifle at a
close-up of Aboro, the corrupt gorilla 'tyrant'. The backs have plot
synopses and more photos from the relevant eps. And the videos
themselves are of such excellent quality that when my husband walked
into the room while I was sneaking a peek, he thought the Sci-Fi
Channel was rerunning the series again!

We have Ken to thank for the excellent treatment given the collection
by Fox Home Entertainment in Australia, so a huge thanks from me,
Ken. And I can't recommend Michael enough for facilitating this
transaction and getting it done so darned fast. It's refreshing to
run across someone who's straight up and a man of his word...Thanks,
    darlin'! /Mez

Well, this blows big time. And I was just about to give Fox some
major positive coverage on my site regarding the release, too. Looks
like I'll just have to change it to a write-/phone-in campaign.

Do Fox ever tire of ticking fans off? /Mez

A funny ( well, kinda) story about this sleeve. Originally the graphic artist
working on the job misinterpreted my brief and used a shot of Galen instead
of Aboro. As if Virdon would shoot his buddy Galen?! I don't think the artist
was even born when the series first aired.

Bad move on their part. Would have made a nice tie in with all the new Apes

Yet another bonehead play from Hollywood. I guess TNT could pick up the

I think the biggest problem with all of this is the fact that Fox maybe thinking that they may endup loosing in this DVD venture than gaining. If the demand is not all that great then the bottom line is that FOX will loose money.
And while many feel that that is not a good enough reason, the truth is that if Fox looses, we all loose. Because they will then stop production on any further ape projects.

I say let the remake come out and if it's a big hit then no doubt original ape projects will follow. And If it fails, we can all kiss planet of the apes goodbye. Because no studio in their right mind will ever loose money on that venture again.

That's why I say: Support Tim Burton's remake, because whether you want to believe it or not, by not supporting such a film, we all might as well get use to the idea that no more ape products will ever be released by FOX if this remake fails.

Not that we hold the fate of Tim Burton's film in our hands but not supporting it sure as hell dosen't help the original POTA and it's future. For I have said before, remakes and sequals only brings back originals to popular status.

Hey, but what the hell, what do I know right?
First FOX interactive game, and now the T.V. Series DVD set.

I think we should all get used to the idea of calling Tim Burton The Planet of the Apes SAVIOUR...whether anyone wants to accept that reality or not that's thier own affair. But it is the truth.

    Best,

On page 56 of the new issue of TV Guide there's stuff about the websites for
the summer movies.  About POTA they say, "A global hunt for simian artifacts
allegedly being covered up by the government dominates www.planetoftheapes.com
, the site for the new "Planet of the Apes" film.  Talk about trying to get a
    monkey off your back."

Does anybody know what this is about.  I haven't visited the site in weeks

Maybe if we started a rumor that there were bootleg DVDs of the POTA TV show

We better get it out there ourselves if we want to make money on this!"

Here's the details. . . .  Somebody out there has one of these recordable DVD

converted them from PAL to NTSC and is recording them on DVD and selling them

AMC pretty much shows only movies.  They have their documentaries and their
original shows, but they don't show old TV shows.

I think there might be a good chance that Fox will show the POTA TV show in
late July or August for a limited run on either the Fox Channel or Fox Family
Channel.  We'll just have to wait and see.

Also, remember that if the new film does really huge business and a whole new
generation of fans starts buying up the toys and such, we may yet see the old
    TV show appear on video.

It's all a matter of wait and see.  Remember, anticipation of a thing is more
often than not better better than the thing itself.

Also keep your eyes open on tonight's NBA playoffs as FoX sponsored the last one and had a ton of commercials during that...same one but what the heck. Recording it 4 or 5 times is better than once.

I don't get this, but then I've never watched more than 10 seconds of
"Survivor," and I don't get it's popularity at all.  I consider the people
from "Survivor" who are now celebrities the 'unfamous.'  Remember how Dracula
was dead, but not dead?  He was the 'undead'?   Well, these people are
famous, but not famous.  They are the 'unfamous.'

Anyway, my two favorite films are "Planet of the Apes" and "2001: A Space
Odyssey."   Does that get me kicked off anything?
