I like that scene too, but the fact that Roddy's makeup is practically
falling off kind of bugs me.

How about the Japanese television series that was squashed down into an
English dubbed 90 minute movie:

Time of the Apes

I hear that they gave it the MST3K treatment. I have to admit, though, I
kinda liked it and would really like to see the entire series. If I only
had a couple hundred thousand dollars to buy the rights -- I'd make my own
dub and release it myself.

No. I'm serious.

didn't. Here's the ones that didn't:

My original John Chambers video post (I know this went through to others
because Brian responded)

Eric Greene Book

My response to Insert Foot A Into Mouth B

I'm just curious if anyone else received the aforementioned posts or if
anyone is still having problems. Perhaps we should consider moving the list
to another free service.

Off the top of my head...

    Any scene with Zira.

"Get your stinkin' paws off me you damn dirty ape."

The interaction between Julius and Taylor

See, hear, speak no evil trial scene.

Zaius and Taylor conferance scene after the trial

Statue of Liberty ending of POTA.

    The Lawgiver in Battle.

    The feel/mood of Conquest.

The Apes shopping and hobnobbing spree in New York in Escape.

The first half of Beneath (not fond of the ending of this one, just felt like
the writers and directors were trying to avoid having to do another apes
film, figuring "if we blow up the place, that'll be it." instead of coming up
    with a good ending.)

My favorite TV ep is the one with the blind chimp girl (although I have only
seen about half of them.) as far as the cartoons go, I'm going to have to
think awhile before I can come up with some good points on them...

I have a fairly healthy collection.

My most prize item is probably the Hand Glider and the Sleeping Bag.

I have most of the Megos (Mint on Card) and most of the Playsets, but while most POTA collectors consider these as an entire collection, to me they are only the very basic (and easy to find) beginnings.

By the way, I spent $365 on some British wrapping paper (which I spent another $200 to frame) a couple of years ago.

Two days later a piece went on ebay for $20.  They are getting about $10 noe.

Well, I'd have to say two posters I have from PLANET are my most prized
items.  Both posters are very rare, probably rarer than the door panels, I
believe.  They are 30"X44" and I think were meant to go up in bus and subway
stations around the New York City area just prior to PLANET opening wide
after playing at just two theatres in Manhatten for a couple months.  I
bought them for $17 each back in the seventies at this place called the Movie
      Gallery on Long Island, NY.

The date on the bottom of the posters is April 3rd, 1968 and is the day
before Martin Luther King was shot -- which I guess Eric Greene would make a
big deal of.   I love both these posters, but I really wish I also had a Dr.
Zaius one, too!   Anyway, you can view them in the attachment.

I'm looking for people to recommend some films that have a POTA connection
(like an actor, writer, producer, composer, etc). I would like to see lists
that combine the obvious (Ben Hur, A Streetcar Named Desire, Patton, Bridge
on the River Kwai, Rebel Without a Cause, The Muppet Movie) with some more
obscure films that we may have missed. I'm betting that Rory will have some
good thoughts on this, but I want to see others ideas too.

By the way Rory, did you ever finish your "Chuck" posts? I don't seem to
recall reading the conclusion. Is it lost in Yahooland?

      Matt

What's the POTA connection with "The Muppet Movie"?  That one puzzles me.

I could write a big list here, but I'll tell you a better thing to do and
that is going to the Internet Movie Database (www.imdb.com), typing in
"Planet of the Apes" or any of the sequels, then just clicking on any of the
names of those involved and seeing their lists of credits and clicking on
some of those.   It great to have a website where you can do this.  When I
was a kid, you relied on reference books in the library or from used book
      stores.

      -- Rory

By the way, NO I haven't finished the "Chuck" thing.

It's just a three page spread, but it's pretty cool and it was the public's

        Hey Matt,

You want the August 18th, 1967 issue.  Supermodel Verushka (the Elle McPherson of her day) is on the cover. (see attached)

I can remember the first time I saw this magazine.  I was in high school and about to get my driver's license.  I went to the public library
to go through all the old life magazines to find articles about the 1967 and 68 Mercury Cougar (my dream car).  I nearly pooped my
pants when I saw the Planet of the Apes article.  Awesome!

Ebay has LIFE magazine dealers all over the place.  Just contact any one of them and I'm sure you'll find one.  Either that or visit your
local used book store or do a used book source search on the net.

In the Chambers' tape there was a mention of an article that appeared in
        LIFE
magazine in 1967 before POTA came out (Rick Baker mentioned it).

Does anyone own a copy of this mag? What is the article like? How many cool
        photos are there?

        Matt

It's just a three page spread, but it's pretty cool and it was the public's
first view of the apes.  The issue pops up on eBay every now and then.

In the future, I might get it scanned and post it here.

Sorry for the off-topic post, but I was wondering if anyone in Ape-land could
help me out on this. I am looking for an 8 x 10 photo (black and white or
color) of Racquel Welch from "1 Million BC." It's the classic photo of her
standing with her arms stretched out at the side and looking into the

Well, as far as Kim Hunter films are concerned
Streetcar probably turns up the most on television for obvious reasons. The
ones besides it that show up the most are her first film the suspense/horror
            classic
            The Seventh Victim and
Deadline USA a Humphrey Bogart noir.

Once in a while you might find the only antiwar film ever made during W.W.II,
Tender Comrade, an ironic title considering her later blacklisting. And
Lilith, A psychological Warren Beatty flick and
            She makes brief appearances in
            The Swimmer with Burt Lancaster.
            The Kindred with Rod Steiger
Two Evil Eyes with Harvey Keitel &
Midnight In The Garden of Good And Evil
            And her performance in
Dark August is the only good thing about it.

            Her TV movies include . . .
            Bad Ronald &
            Born Innocent with Linda Blair
as well as many television series guest spots

One of her best films isn't on much. The Archer's classic . . .
Stairway To Heaven aka A Matter Of Life And Death with David Niven.

Betrayed aka When Strangers Marry is supposed to be a great noir with Robert
Mitchum, but it so rare I've never seen it and can't find a copy.

The same with Anything Can Happen and You Came Along.

Probably her most Apes related film is . . .
The Young Stranger, with Apes co-stars James Gregory and James Daly.
I managed to get a laser disk, but I don't have a player so I haven't seen it
either. Perhaps someday I can dub a tape.

kits, Don Post masks and Mego dolls are amongst my favourite items. I
also love the Medicom wind up figures and Ultra detail figures. Some of
the oddities I have are the U.K version of a 'give-a-show projector', a

Yeah, I have this image as a daybill poster ( kind of like an 'insert' poster
but thinner paper and not as big). I think they used it instead of the
standard 'famuly portrait' image because they could print it as a 2 colour
poster instead of full colour to save money.
            Cheap bastards!

Using existing music from other films for trailers is a standard, but I

Yeah, that ESCAPE poster was the way the film was sold in Australia.  That

.html Well, when I say 'junk room', it's more like a waiting room for things that need to go up in the attic. Stuff like the toys my son no longer plays with ( He looks after his stuff, so we don't throw it out or give it away. He can sell them on Ebay in about 20 years) and other bits and pieces that I've accumulated that are non-Ape related.  It's not quite an archaeological dig site, so don't charge me with heresy just yet.

I meant to write "the refuse of man" not "refuge." Dumb man that I am.

Anyway, I was wondering...... Do you know who it was that sculpted the

            .html
.html Bill Creber was in charge of the art department.  I do not know if he designed the original statue with his own drawings, but he did oversee every look of the film.  In those days, approved ART DEPT designs were shuffled off to the different studio departments; WOOD SHOP, PROP SHOP, FOAM SHOP, METAL SHOP, SCENICS, etc, etc, etc.   Chances are that a team of sculptors in the SCULPTURE shop worked on the Lawgiver from ape-proved designs, then the sculpture was handed over to the MOLD SHOP where stone or fiberglass molds were made of of it.

At least 2 full statues were pulled from those molds, one for location work, one for soundstages at the studio.

And at least one bust was made for use in the courtroom during Taylor's tribunal.  That bust was later fitted with blood tubes and oozed red paint during the hallucination scenes in Beneath. (rumor has it that the bust now resides in a basement in Florida) Blood drips were painted on one of the two full size statues for the long shots of the statue toppling over onto Zaius.

At the end of filming for Beneath, Jacobs gave one of the two full statues to Sammy Davis Jr., because he liked it so much.  That upset John Chambers, because Jacobs had already promissed it to him.  At some point the Candyman had it whitewashed while it sat in his back yard.  It is now owned by an actor in Studio City, California.  That's the one that we molded (for our replicas) and it has been completely restored to all it's original glory.

The other Lawgiver statue seen in many of the publicity fotos of Dr Zaius, (you know the shot of him that looks like he's in a dark room preaching in front of the statue?) was part of the Jacobs estate until sometime in late 1998 when Natalie Trundy auctioned it off.  Sadly it only fetched $15G's (I couldn't outbid the other guy once it reached 15.5, drat!!!)  but we wound up restoring it for the new owner anyway.  It was in pretty sad shape.  full of BB holes and such.  It now sits atop a hillside home in a private community in Orange County, Calif.   Actually a pretty majestic spot overlooking a state park area with hiking trails, so humans have to look up to the great one, and rightfully so!

The small desktop version of the statue  (seen in Zaius' office in the first film and Zira's house in Beneath) is owned by a special effects guy here in the San Fernando Valley, and it's very doubtfull anyone will ever see it again.  He keeps his collection pretty tightly wrapped.  I don't blame him.  He is contemplating making a limited edition avalable.  We'll see.

Too much information?  Sorry,  you got me going.

Of course, the Medicoms are much more accurate and therefore better (they are

Well, when I say 'junk room', it's more like a waiting room for things that need to go up in the attic.

Absolutely and I would have to say I sincerely agree.

In terms of accurately portraying the apes I have to say nothing goes near

reflect my fandom of all things APE when I was a youngster. Apologies for the
poor quality, the camera I had at the time was pretty crappy and so is the
              scanner I have now.
But I think you'll be able to make 'em out. In the shot where I'm playing in the
plants, you'll see ( maybe) that I'm holding the chimp 'Astro-Ape' POTA knock off
figure. I used to call him 'Augustus'. You may also be able to make out the Mego
Frankenstein (closest thing to a lobotomized human I had at the time) and Big
              Jim's Gorilla.
In the other shot you will see the 'Urko' poster like the one Michael mentioned

              Hey Rory,

I thought my long winded explination answered your question as to who sculpted the Lawgiver statue.  Being that Creeber was in charge of everything, it's doubtful he actually did any hands on.  That's not how it works with a guy in his position on films.  More than likely he oversaw a crew of sculptors and moldmakers in the statue's construction.  Next time I run into him I'l pick his brain on it, although I hear he grows weary of us "apeheads" and our questions.  He has done a few other films since Apes, you know.

Hey Rory, I thought my long winded explination answered your question as to
who sculpted the Lawgiver statue.  Being that Creeber was in charge of
everything, it's doubtful he actually did any hands on.  That's not how it
works with a guy in his position on films.  More than likely he oversaw a
crew of sculptors and moldmakers in the statue's construction.  Next time I
run into him I'l pick his brain on it, although I hear he grows weary of us
"apeheads" and our questions.  He has done a few other films since Apes,
              you know.

Yeah, I thought your original reply was great and not long winded at all --
and I wrote so.  I guess posts still aren't getting through.  Anyway, that
was interesting about a 'whitewashed' lawgiver in Sammy Davis Jr.'s backyard.
What would Eric Greene make of that?

              Take care,

              Ken?   Is that so?

              -- Rory

Yeah, at the time I was into pretty much all of famous monsters of filmland.
In particular, I loved Frankenstein and Dracula. For a while, I use to collect any dolls or figures of these characters but when I started focussing on my APES collection, they kind of took a back seat. The reason I had the Mego Frank was because at the time I had most of the Megos that were available. When we moved house, I gave them ALL to a friends little brother. I was about 14 and thought I'd grown out of them. I guess that's a common story with most Mego collectors. I still like Megos and will pick one up every now and again at a show if it's a reasonable price.

.htmlOkay, I've just had this idea for a game to play.   Name some human
celebrity, or politician, or anyone famous, then say if you think they are a
              gorilla, chimpanzee, or orangutan.

This has no point to this other than to look at things as if THIS is the
planet of the apes (human-apes actually).

              For instance, . . . .  President Bush?   Well, he's a conservative, so he's
gotta be an orangutan.   Clinton?  Looked like an orang, but was a chimp
because he was liberal.  Senator Jessie Helms?  An old, right-wing orangutan!

Some actors. . . .  Tom Cruise?   Chimp.   John Travolta?  Gorilla.  (He's
too big to be a chimp, and not orang material.)    John Goodman?   Off hand
I'd say orangutan, but he could be a gorilla.  Tom Hanks?  Chimp.  Mel
Gibson?  When young, a chimp, now a gorilla.   Charlton Heston?  Orangutan
              (What else?)

Rosie O'Donnell?  Gorilla.   Oprah Winfrey?  Gorilla.  Winona Ryder?  Chimp.
Winona Judd?  Gorilla.   Nicole Kidman?  Orang (Because of the red hair.)

Well, you get the idea.   Me?  A chimp.   How about you?

I have a copy of it. The interesting thing is wondering what people thought
when they saw it. The cover date is Aug. 18 '67, almost 6 months before the
film's release. It's 2 pgs and shows a nice size photo of Taylor in the
outdoor pen as Cornelius & Zira look on; a group of photos showing the
makeup process on Maurice Evans; a bad picture of the pull-over masks ; and
a head shot of two chimps. Oh, 3 pages... I forgot the full page photo of
Evans as Zauis holding the umbrella. Not much text; mentions Evans, Jacobs,
Heston, and Chambers. Mostly just talks about the makeup. The next page, the
last in the issue has a full page photo of a real chimp eating an ice

That sculpture is gorgeous, but I think Scott said he bought it for him. Also, last time I was there John left his Oscar and Emmy on the desk where someone could snag it. He says sometimes he even uses it as a doorstop. The only POTA Oscar in existence (until next year)!      - - - - Jeff K.

John has paralysis on the right side of his body because of his stroke.  He is right handed.  He struggles to sign auto graphs with his left hand.  I'm not sure if his wife answers all the mail he gets, but I do know that they enjoy every bit of it that they get.

When we first visited John a few weeks after we threw his 75th B-day party, his room at the motion picture hospital/home was pretty barren.  Not these days, thanx to Scott's video and numerous magazine articles about the big guy, the place is a shrine of fan letters and gifts from all over the world.  It's nice to see.  Heck, some fan in Europe even sculpted a beautiful statuette of Chambers doing Kim Hunter's make-up in an entire make-up room setting.  Weighs a ton!

As far as writing to the Chambers, putting a sase in with any correspondence is a good idea.

Regardless, they'll enjoy anything that comes their way.

The "Beneath" ending was a consiracy between Heston and Richard Zanuck.
Apparently director Ted Post didn't know that until he saw the "Behind the
pOTA" documentary. He expressed his outrage that Heston would selfishly
champion that ending in "Apesfan" #2. Post hated that ending! (What happened

I loved the "Battle" huts. They were interesting because they were
different, not the "Flintstones" architecture we're familiar with. I wish
they would have changed the costumes. I don't see the school bus as racial
allegory but I think it was a humorous touch and not just thrown in. I like
Eric's book a lot but it is wearing. Better in small doses.       - - - Jeff

It's nice to visit every so often, especially the stuff after the end of the
series, but like Matt, I'll never read it entirely again.

Yeah, I've had a copy of this since the seventies.  It's an interesting
              artifact of its day.

I've read that Kevin Burns, director/producer of "Behind the POTA", bought
the rights to "Lost in Space" and wants to do a "Next Generation" type
series with it.                  - - - Jeff Krueger

Probably starring the illegitimate child of Dr. Smith and the robot.  I
always suspected there's something 'funny' about that robot.
