Go for it, Daniel! Just don't OD or you may find you have the sudden
urge to wear a rucksack everywhere and play duck and hide with the
authorities.

Bryan, thanks for the reminder about the DVD release in November -- I
have to put that up in lights on my site.

And I can't speak for the others, Rory, but the reason I got the
videos is because 1) I don't have a DVD player (yet) and 2) American
DVDs won't play in standard UK DVD players!! /Mez

I know, Mez, this region encoding stuff really stinks!  I feel sorry for you
people because the extras on the new special edition "Behind the Planet of
the Apes" DVD sound like they're going to be really great.  BUT. . . I think
they may be putting it out on VHS, too.

The explosion in DVDs over here is one of the few reason I could give you for
returning to the US, Mez.

Well there are region free DVD players that play any region DVD.
The only problem is they cost a good $700.00 to $1200.00.
But on the other hand there is e-bay.

All the best.

I'm no expert, so I may be wrong here, but isn't it quite easy to get DVD
players "tampered with", so to speak, in order to play multi-region discs?
It'd invalidate any guarantee you may have, but that's all. (Also, I assume
it's easier to do if you happen to play DVDs through your computer)

Fox is thinking big box office bucks when the sign up the comedy directing
team of Bobby and Peter Farrelly to shoot a remake of Planet of the Apes.
The
casting coup here is getting Jim Carrey to play a duel role in the film.

First, Carrey plays Commander Taylor, an astronaut whose solo mission in
space goes wrong, forcing him to make a landing on a strange remote planet.
Taylor then encounters an society where apes rule and man is a beast. The
apes are surprised that Taylor can talk, but rather than considering him a
menace, they treat him as a curiosity and relish his zany antics. He soon
emerges as a celebrity in the ape society. The whole thing turns dark when
Minister of Science Dr. Zaius (also played by Carrey, who apparently did
not
tire of the elaborate makeup he had to endure as the Grinch) wants to
capture
Taylor and put him in a circus where his "definate gift of mimicry" can be
exploited for financial gain. With the the help of two sympathetic
chimpanzees (Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz), Taylor escapes and the trio
embark on a slapstick race to the Forbidden Zone where Taylor wishes to
find
clues about to escape from the POTA.

This would be sort of interesting.  Watching Carrey with a beard and dark tan
do a over-the-top Heston imitation would be rather endearing.  I don't know
about him being Zaius though.  I think Ben Stiller is already half-way there
as far as looking rather chimpanzee-ish, but Cameron Diaz as Zira?! -- what a
waste!  A ditzy Nova would be better.  Better would be Janeane Garofalo as a
misanthropic Dr. Zira making sarcastic comments all the time.

I have to wonder though, how do you have a 'slapstick race through the
Forbidden Zone'?   Do gorillas go over clifts in their wagons just like Wyle
E. Coyote, supergenius?

Hey, there's an idea:  Chuck Jones' Planet of the Apes!

Throw in Wal-Mart and cheap gas prices -- SOLD! (You think US
gasoline prices are expensive now at around $1.70-2.00 per gallon,
try $5.00 on average, which is what the UK public has been paying per
gallon since at least '95. And close to 80% of that is GOVERNMENT
TAX.)

I'm astounded -- they're actually not as bad as that! I just found a
few region-free DVD players for under £200 in case anyone else
from the UK is interested. Look here and then filter on 'regional

.html

writes:

In a move that surprises everyone in the film industry, Woody Allen
announces
that he has secured the rights to shoot a remake of Planet of the Apes. The
whole thing is kept under wraps and Hollywood is buzzing about why Allen
would do it. Finally, the details leak out:

Allen stars a neurotic chimp archaeologist who is stressing out about some
of
his discoveries. It seems that he has learned that apes evolved from men
and
he is worried that if he reveals this discovery he could be embarressed or
worse yet banished from the scientific academy. He is also worried about
how
the stress will affect his relationship with a young female chimp (played
by
Katie Holmes) that he is mentoring. Things really spin out of control when
an
astronaut from the past (played by John Cusack) arrives to confirm Allen's
discoveries. As Allen fights to protect Cusack (and his own reputation) he
doesn't seem to notice that Holmes is falling for the intelligent human.
This
bizarre love triangle causes a scandal in the ape society causing them to
ignore Allen and his discoveries. This causes Allen to feel more sad and
rejected. The ape society is very reminiscent of 1930s Manhatten, with apes
partaking in activities like playing in ragtime bands.

Better yet would be a Woody Allen remake of BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES
with a radiation-scarred neurotic Jewish mutant (Allen) living in the sewers
of Manhattan playing Gershwin music endlessly and complaining about being so
lonely and the emptiness of life.  Finally an army of gorillas (from Harlem)
invade Allen's sanctuary where he tries to fight them off using only a large
polo mallet.  A sympathetic chimpanzee psychotherapist (Diane Keaton)
convinces Allen he just needs to get out more and advises him to go up to the
surface.  Out in the sunlight, Allen discovers a tribe of half-naked
flower-children living in the remains of Central Park.  He then finds true
happiness with an oriental teenage girl who's 'into leather' making jackets
for the once-hostile gorillas in what's left of the upper east side.  You
could call the film "Everything You Always Wanted To Know About POTA, but
Were Afraid To Ask"

Better yet recite three lines from the 29th Scroll, then say 'amen' and make
the sign of the cross upside down.  Try to pull your face off, then just
shout "GOD DAMN IT ALL TO HELL!!!" between clenched teeth.   This won't do
your computer any good, but it'll remind you of what a silly human animal you

I think you mean from the films, but my favorite has always been
the 'GO APE' poster. That gorilla grabbed me and shook me to
attention as a child, and it still has that effect every time I see
it. /Mez

Just the other day I found a website asking $1200.00 for that "Go Ape"
poster!  Insane!   Frankly, I'd like the poster better if they'd used a model
wearing the actual  gorilla appliances instead of just a background mask
background mask.

You know they must have made a whole bunch of those ape background masks, but
you never see them pop up on ebay.

I wonder if Brian at Apemania knows whatever became of them?

They're still around as are the original molds.  I've seen them sell from $500 to $2,500 depending on the character and what film they were used in.

Really bad copies (3rd or 4th generation dupes) are out there as well, only they are sooooooooo tiny they wouldn't even fit on a small child.  Being that latex shrinks 10-30%, a third or fourth generation dupe is pretty darn small.

The quality of the detail is one of the best ways of telling which film the masks were used in.  Really fine detail would indicate a "first run" mask.  The molds usually are pretty worn out by the time 25 to 30 masks have been pull from them.

Most of the ORIGINAL masks that I've seen surface in the past few years are really badly pitted and smooth, indicating that the masks were made from original molds that were around from the beginning.
Most of the 3rd generation dupes I have seen were duped from poor condition masks as well.  So you've got really tiny masks with really bad surface details.

We are working on a commemorative version of a Background Gorilla to add to our line, here's a sneak peak of the sculpture.

    take care.

A pretty interesting site, Alex. I went down the entire list. So far PLANET
OF THE APES (1968) has made $26 Million. Overseas grosses were not available.

By comparison "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968) has made $56.7 million.

For some reason none of the APES sequels were in the list.

"Gone With The Wind" since 1939 has made $390.6 million. That's pretty
fantastic considering that back when that movie opened tickets were like .25
cents! I think in terms of tickets sold, "Gone With The Wind" still beats
    "Titanic" by a large margin.

Most surprising thing I found: Since 1939 "The Wizard of Oz" has only made
$14.8 million! I would have thought it would be more. "Frankenstein" (1931)
has made just $12 million, and "Lawrence of Arabia" (1962) just $6 million!
I kind of wonder about this list, but maybe it's true!

Titanic beat everyone even with the difference in cost over the years.

    Yeah that's it.
While the DVD has copy protection, some, not all, DVD region free players have a chip the over rides the copy protection. But on the other hand I believe these are sold in Asia...No surprise.

Not even the top twelve hundred! Sure it didn't cost 7 or 8 bucks to go to

took longer to make what it's made, plus it's been re-released more than
    "Planet."

Anyway, $15 Million in 1968 would be how much today? Adjusted for inflation,

Yes, this is worrisome.  Fox better start really pouring it on with the hype.
I think we should start to see a lot more commercials for it after the July
    4th weekend.

I don't hear many people saying they are eager to see "Jurassic Park III," so
I don't think it's going to do the business of the first two, but this new
POTA has people curious.  However, I think a lot of people are ready to say

There's a 'beach party' movie, I think "Bikini Beach" (1964) that features a

Chambers make-up.  The Eloise chimp in ESCAPE is basically this same
      Prohaska
costume.  Janos Prohaska, I think his brother, and a bunch of makeup
      artists
were killed back in the early seventies when the plane crashed bring them
back from shooting this show about human evolution in Africa, "Primal Man."

James Prohaska was Janos' brother. He's probably best known for playing the
Horta in the Star Trek episode, "Devil In The Dark".

I saw a newer POTA trailer this weekend before the Moulin Rouge

I must say the trailer looked awesome and did a lot to erase some of
my skepticism. The apes looked terrific and scary in a lot of the
      battle scenes.

Speaking of Mad Max,at Toys r Us,they have some pretty cool looking "Road
Warrior" action figures.Of the ones I looked at they had the guy with his
little helicopter (gyrocopter?),Max and the Feral kid (2 pack),and one of the
bad ones( I can't think of what they were called either).I didn't buy
      them,cuz I don't like the movie "that" much,but I thought I'd tell the group
in case there are any members that may be interested.

Screw that! I want the car! Talking about Escape and sci-fi that can make
you cry... one of the saddest moments in sci-fi is when they wrecked that
      car! Ouch!
I was reminded of it last week at the end of The Shootist, when Ron Howard
kills John Wayne's killer and the he takes a beautiful Colt Peacemaker with
scroll engraving and heaves it across the bar. As the Banana Splits used to

      Hi Kay,

I live in England so the videos that Michael sent me are the same
format as the UK (PAL VHS). The series was split into 2 boxes with 3
videos in each and they look very smart. I don't yet have a dvd
player and just couldn't wait to get hold of them as I'm sure you
      can't... happy viewing !

I've never been to Miami -- you got a baseball team? (Mets fan here!)
We may drive thru Miami in the Fall if we go to the Keys. And we'll
try the New Islands of Adventure then as well, that's new since last
we were in Orlando. Thanks! /Mez

No sure, maybe at Romans Chinese Theatre California.

If non of us win, I only hope that they have good t.v. coverage on it.

Where the hell did you find that thing? Are you restoring it or are you making
copies. A desk size version would make a great matching piece for the Lawgiver
desk piece you were going to release. What ever happened to that?
Also, I'd never noticed the 'glyphs' on the statue before. Interesting
considering Caesar didn't have them in 'Battle'. I think only Aldo had them

Yeah, I did see that review before but I don't think it's been posted on the group before, so I'm sure there are those who havn't seen it.
The storyline is true, that is the film, and it is a very good storyline.
However I don't understand his review. He makes it seem as thoe he's just seen the film and in reality he's only reviewing a rough cut of the script.

I've never read such a desparate review in my life.
The funny thing about it is that he speaks as thoe he's just walked out of the theatre. He must have one hell of an imagination.

Not doubt someone strongly seeking attention.
          poor guy...

          .html Hi Ken,

Found it on my doorstep yesterday morning.  Actually we will be restoring it for the Motion Picutre Trust Fund, Roddy's favorite charity.  They have built a memorial rose garden (in his memory) and CAESAR will be the centerpiece.  Something I have been discussing with them is for us to mold and release a limited edition of the face and nameplate to also raise money for the fund.  So stay tuned...

A matching desk-size to the Lawgiver aye?  Ours is still in the works, but the guy that owns the original desk-size LG is contemplating releasing copies of it as well, so we may wait on ours a while longer.  We are also quite busy with these full-size restorations right now anyway, but hang in there.  You'll see more cool goodies soon!

          Hey Brian,
Where the hell did you find that thing? Are you restoring it or are you making
copies. A desk size version would make a great matching piece for the Lawgiver
desk piece you were going to release. What ever happened to that?
Also, I'd never noticed the 'glyphs' on the statue before. Interesting
considering Caesar didn't have them in 'Battle'. I think only Aldo had them
          when he got his collar.

Well, I tried not to read too much of that, but it really doesn't say much --
except that the two people who read the script didn't think it was that good.

I think it's about 80% that most of us original POTA fans will have 'issues'
with this new film.  Firstly, Zira, Cornelius and Dr. Zaius are going to be
sorely missed, secondly, it isn't going to look or feel like the original
movie OR any of the sequels.  It going to be almost entirely new -- and I
          just don't know.  I just don't know.
