Gee, and it was Liz Smith who back in '68 said of
"Planet of the Apes" in Cosmopolitan was "A Blockbuster Movie! A
genuine 14 caret film. Big, fascinating, totally entertaining!"
I guess she's just become an old-fart, and a sloopy one at that.
-- Rory
Or perhaps she just hasn't seen the new
POTA revisit yet to give a legit judgement on it?
Gee I
don't know....

Who the hell is Liz Smith? Sounds like one of those half-assed journos that
are more interested in giving their own opinion than getting the facts
straight. That's right...don't worry about knowing what you're talking

Hey, you are not alone. I think the thought of B'Elanna Tortoise's Dad
banging one of those turtleheaded chicks on Star Trek is a much bigger deal.

A woman got on a bus holding a baby. The bus driver said,
"That's the ugliest baby I've ever seen." .
In a huff, the woman slammed her fare into the fare box and
took an aisle seat near the rear of the bus. The man seated
next to her sensed that she was agitated and asked her what
was wrong.
"The bus driver insulted me," she fumed.
The man sympathized and said, "Why, he's a public servant
and shouldn't say things to insult passengers."
"You're right!" the woman said, "I think I'll go back up
there and give him a piece of my mind!"
"That's a good idea," the man said, "Here, let me hold your
monkey."

Hi Bryan,
Just thought I'd chime in here. It's unlikely that the US DVDs will
have the same packaging as that packaging was developed here in Australia
by little ol' me. I used to work at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment
( Apologies for those on the group who are sick of hearing this story)
and lobbied for the Aussie release of the series.
Although we sent all the locally developed art to our Home office in
L.A should other countries want to pursue a similar release, I'd
imagine that the Fox domestic office would not think ( or even realize
the tapes had been released in Australia) to ask the International office
for the art. So I'll be interested to see what they come up with. Glad
you like the packaging, it's nice to read about fan 'approval' of the packaging.
Best,
KEN <.html

Thanks
for that Ken.
This
also answers Rory's previous question about why pay so much for this box set -
because it really is a nice addition to the collection that has been well
developed by a true fan! No statue of liberty cover
here!
Hey
Ken - I need to buy a sealed version of Box 1 and none of the stores in Canberra
have any...HELP!!!!
If you

I'd chime in here. It's unlikely that the US DVDs will have the same packaging
as that packaging was developed here in Australia by little ol' me. I used to
work at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment ( Apologies for those on the group
who are sick of hearing this story) and lobbied for the Aussie release of the
series. Although we sent all the locally developed art to our Home office in
L.A should other countries want to pursue a similar release, I'd imagine
that the Fox domestic office would not think ( or even realize the tapes had
been released in Australia) to ask the International office for the art. So I'll
be interested to see what they come up with. Glad you like the packaging, it's
nice to read about fan 'approval' of the packaging. Best, KEN

I would imagine that that moment in film history when those gorillas on
horseback first ride onto the screen in the original film would make the top
100 films, but with the AFI who knows?

A client recently one the eBay auction of this sad looking Don Post mask and
has shipped it to us for cleaning and restoration.
Remarkably, the piece is not at all damaged (structurally), the paint's almost
gone though, thanx to being burried in a grimey crankcase oil dirt pit.
The thing that puzzles me is which character is it? When it was on eBay it was
listed as a Dr. Zaius, but I don't think so. Any clues?
Also, it is made out of a heavy duty vinyl, not latex. What's the scoop with
that? Anyone know? Did POST run the first series in vinyl?
Comments welcomed.

Speaking of this auction...does anyone know of the person on ebay with the current high bid, 'monstermaker'? 'Monstermaker' seems to be an insane POTA collector, always bidding whatever it takes to get the item he bids on to be everyone out. Always seems to especially want the rare items, so I'm sure this one is indeed a rare one, I've never seen it either....

Well come to think of it I think I'm going to hold out for a bigger
convention down the road. If the film is a big hit then no doubt there
will be sometime HUGE for L.A. in the weeks or months to come.
As for Jersey I wouldn't have mind but it's set for Opening Weekend July 28,
29 and I'm afraid I have plans for that weekend. So a bigger L.A. convention
will be it for me. And aslo the fact that I've always wanted to travel to
Califonia to visit.
Here's the link to the newspaper:
www.prophecysite.com/convention.jpg
You'll find it in the bulletin board under ' Planet of the Ape Events'
Sorry gang. Perhaps we'll all meet in L.A. for a huge sci-fi convention.
All the best,

Hi Rick,
No offense taken. I have agreements with many ape fans
that if they have a previous bid on a cool piece on eBay that I won't try
to outbid them, and I stick to those agreements. With stills, a few
of us exchange digital scans of some of the cooler pics. We're all
one big happy fan family, and one big pool of resources, in my book.
So if anyone on this list has a bid in on an item first, and
I come along and push them out, just let me know. I don't know everyone's
handle on ebay, so just let me know when I'm stepping on toes and I'll
back off.
It's not a matter of life or death with me, especially with production
stills. We mostly use them for reference anyway. No big deal.
Now that you've piqued my interest, what auctions have I caused you
to miss out on?

cool
Brian. The only auctions that come to mind are a lonnng time ago (long
before I was on any list) when I was trying to acquire the
three-sectioned POTA plate (Deka), they seem hard to hard. I'm not usually
hardcore on the auctions but I think I remember you winning an auction on a
French Planete des Singes, maybe first edition. I can't recall but I
remember that Eric Greene was bidding on it too. One
day.

Hi
Brian
Ken
Taylor and I have the same agreement - avoids bitter feelings - good to see you
have a harmonic nature too!!
Michael
Hi Rick,
No offense taken. I have agreements with many ape fans that if
they have a previous bid on a cool piece on eBay that I won't try to outbid
them, and I stick to those agreements. With stills, a few of us exchange
digital scans of some of the cooler pics. We're all one big happy fan
family, and one big pool of resources, in my book.
So if anyone on this list has a bid in on an item first, and I come
along and push them out, just let me know. I don't know everyone's handle
on ebay, so just let me know when I'm stepping on toes and I'll back
off.
It's not a matter of life or death with me, especially with production
stills. We mostly use them for reference anyway. No big
deal.
Now that you've piqued my interest, what auctions have I caused you to
miss out on?

December 2000 is that very shot with Chuck, Gorilla & scriptperson. Very cool
indeed. I also posted something last night during AFI when POTA checked in at
#59. Didn't show up so I guess Yahoo struck again. Anyhow, it was great to
see it make the list. But I didn't see a commercials for the reimagining.
Guess Fox missed the boat again. GDYATH!!!!!! John <.html

I've attached two .jpgs to this message for your fun and amusement.
The first one is one I took of Linda Harrison and Chuck from the April 2000 Hollywood Collector's Show. It's my personal favorite and have to get off my butt to have them sign it for me.
The second one you may have seen before, I don't know it's source though. I believe it's from a now defunct drive-in in Everett, WA near where I live, back in 1968.

Hey Rick,
Those Plate and dish sets turn up fairly frequently on eBay.
Don't know about the Singes thingie, but if Eric was bidding on something
then I would've pulled out.
As far as the show on Father's day? Nope, got family plans
that weekend. However, we (the cast and crew of APEMANIA ) will be
at the International Make-up & Hairstylist Tradeshow the following
weekend, sans ape garb tho.
B
cool Brian. The only auctions that come to mind are a lonnng time
ago (long before I was on any list) when I was trying to acquire the three-sectioned
POTA plate (Deka), they seem hard to hard. I'm not usually hardcore
on the auctions but I think I remember you winning an auction on a French
Planete
des Singes, maybe first edition. I can't recall but I remember
that Eric Greene was bidding on it too. One day.
btw, are you going to that POTA/comic show in LA this weekend?
My wife and I will be there...

You would absolutely cry at the amazingly fair price he
got the jacket for. The whole display is valued between $45 and $50,000
now that it's complete. But the owner did get the jacket for a song.
When it was in our possession, we had offers from other
collectors between $10-$20G's just for the jacket alone.

.html Just got my "Planet of the Apes, An Unofficial Companion" by David
Hofstede from Amazon today. I give it a B+. It's basically a reference book.
Breaks down the films one by one. Each starts off with the credits, reviews,
the balance sheet, what it's about, what's great about it, what's not so
great & did you know. All very bite size, easy reading/reference. But nothing
that we already didn't know. Has a fairly thorough listing of the TV
episodes, but I'm not a real fan of it. I remember reading a post sometime
back about how Fox didn't consent to the use of photos. It shows. Some
interesting stuff, but not much. One thing that annoyed me was that there's a
shot of Heston throwing a football with the caption "Zauis....it's third and
long. During a break in shooting Planet of the Apes, Charlton Heston shows
off his quarterback skills." Heston's wearing a loincloth, but it's BEN-HUR
for cryin' out loud!!!!!!! Sloppy, Sloppy!!!! A shot of Zanuck & Linda
(san's Nova outfit), with Zanuck striking a Svengali like pose almost makes
up for it. Almost. Anyhow, any POTA book is a good POTA book. But some
books, it seems, will be better than others. I hope this gets posted, my
last few haven't showed up yet. Go Apes, John P.S. very nice section

Hi Ken,
Without saying too much, we have a handful of hi-end clients who
continuously bring us display projects. They all like their privacy
as do the vendors that have stuff on our Ape City Thrift Shop pages, so
we keep everyone anonymous. One in particular seems to have made
a pact with the devil, 'cuz he gets a lot of the choice stuff (the sarcophagus,
the Milo). But he also shares it buy turning his office facilities
into themed showrooms, unlike most collectors who hoard stuff so it will
never be seen again.
We also do other non-ape displays when they come our way as well.
One of these days I'll make time to put some on the Make-up & Monsters
website, but who knows when that will be with all the current ape work
we are doing. Ugh! ("Ugh", I mean we are swamped, not "Ugh!
APES! Ugh!"

We do on occasion have reject heads that, unfortunately, we have to
destroy.
We used to put them up as "Grab-Bag" items on ebay from time to time,
but folks started duping them and selling pirated copies so we've pretty
much stopped selling the rejects. A shame for the true fans that
would put the items to good personal use, but FOX has its rules and franchise
to look out for, and we have to keep them happy.
Someone recently let me know about a guy who actually had purchased
stuff from us and then built a website to sell "suspect" knock-offs
of our items, and, get this, used images that he lifted from our site on
his. Needless to say, he's being investigated.
Oh it's a crazy, dirty, mixed up, greedy world out there. Gimmee
a banana smoothie, a small patch of beachfront land in the Forbidden Zone,
and a Nova lookalike (mute of course) anyday, and leave the nuttiness of
humanity to its own undoing.

Rick,
Back in '68 I and friend, another nine-year-old boy, were talking about
"Planet of the Apes" on the swings at a playground. He was telling me about
this movie he saw "Planet" with as a double-feature. I didn't know what he
was talking about and this other film sounded like a very strange movie. He
told me about how it had cavemen in it fighting dinosaurs. I never forgot
about that weird film told about to me that day. Years later on the late
show one night I finally saw "One Million Years BC." A few years after that
I went to a library and going back in the local paper on micofilm I found the
listing for the double-feature of "Planet of the Apes" and "One Million Years
BC" that played at a few theatres on Long Island, New York in June 1968. I
wished I'd seen that double-feature when I was nine years old.
Oh well, every so often I have watched them together in my own home video
double-feature.

Really
cool that you mention that, especially in the context of Long Island. Did
you grow up there? I lived there for almost 30 years, some of my
fondest memories are of going to the Commack Drive-In (grew up in Commack) and
my Dad taking me to the 'Go Ape!' festival at the Smithtown movie theater on
Main Street. Those were the days, nothing like 10 hours of

I grew up in Levittown in the 60's and first saw PLANET at the Wantagh
Theatre in April, 1968 and saw it for the second time at the Levittown
Theatre in June. In May of 1969 I saw PLANET for the third time on a
double-feature with "Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines" (the
ads for that odd combo said "The Perfect Mates: 'Apes' and 'Men'!"), then
went back to see it for a fourth and fifth time (only skipping 'Men' those
times).
When BENEATH opened in May of 1970 I was by this time smart enough to talk my
aunt, who lived on Staten Island, to take me into Manhatten to see it.
Later in June I saw it another four times on Lonng Island so as to keep up
with PLANET.
After that, my family moved upstate and that was that for L.I., although I've
visited there several times and lived again on the Island for about a year in
the mid-eighties.
I'm sure this will fascinate everyone, especially Alan over there in Scotland.

|
.html I'm sorry to bring this up, but I am just curious if anyone here has ever had
a dispute with someone on eBay. If so, what transpired?
Right now I am in my first dispute with a seller. To make a long story short,
I won an auction for a poster and instead of shipping the thing to me in a
sturdy poster tube, he sends it to me in a makeshift triangle-shaped box that
just begged to be crushed. Of course, this is exactly what happened and the
poster got damaged. When I politely asked the seller for a refund he said
that he would give me the money back for the poster, but not for the
shipping. I didn't think it was fair to stick me with nearly $10 in shipping
charges so I said this was unacceptable. After several exchanged emails he is
now refusing to refund me a dime. I have since reported him to eBay. Are my
efforts futile? What would it take to get a seller banned or suspended from
eBay?
This is really not that big of a deal, and it is actually quite humorous to
me to see exactly how petty and cheap someone can be (the whole thing would
set him back a whopping $1.89 if he would just refund me the amount I
wanted). Adding to the entertainment value is the guy's inability to spell
and punctuate sentences properly. There is a part in one of his emails that I
just have to share. This afternoon he wrote:
"do what you have to do as far as ebay rating. im sure my imbecible record
will stand for itself."
This prompted me to reply:
"The ball is in your court here. If you want to keep your "impeccable"
feedback you will do the right thing. (By the way, there is no such word as
"imbecible." The closest word is "imbecile" which means "a feeble-minded or
stupid person")"
I think this is the comment that caused him to refuse to refund me any money.
Silly me.
Anyways, any help would be appreciated and sorry for the off-topic post.
Thanks,
Matt <.html

I think anyone who uses Ebay long enough is bound to be burnt at some stage. You
could take your case to squaretrade.com
( I think they're an Ebay affiliate ..could be wrong ) they will act as an

them once but they other party never responded to their email requests.
Alternately , you could put it down to experience and ensure you ask even the
most obvious of questions on future auctions. I know how you feel, it's not the
value of the item, its the point of keeping Ebay as clean as possible.
Ebay has turned a lot of average Joes ( who would normally sell their unwanted

I hope you are able to get your situation resolved.

The problem usually escalates when you stoop to their level and start making
nasty comments (although there is often no choice!).
Ask yourself if you really want to give neg feedback because he might return
the same to you and personally I often let the bastards go so as to keep my
record neg free.
You can get really petty and vengeful and get fake Hotmail addresses, get a
fake user id and just keep bidding on all his items then not reply to emails
and leve neg feedback under your fake name - if you are REALLY pissed off!
I usually just leave them alone and forget about it when I am dealing with
pricks like this.

Initially he did say that he would refund me all of my money except the
shipping. When I told him that this was unacceptable and I would leave him
negative feedback unless I got all of money back he said he was sick of my
threats and therefore would not be receiving a dime.
This whole situation is kind of petty. I guess I am basically guilty of
assuming that everyone out there is as nice and honest as me. Again, this is
not a big ticket item. It was just a poster that I paid $26 ($19.99 bid plus
$6.01 for shipping). I thought this shipping charge was a bit high, but I
assumed he was going to either insure it or use the extra couple of bucks to
spring for a sturdy shipping tube, so I didn't have a problem with it. This
was not the case. The actual shipping charge was $3.95 When I asked him why
he charged me an extra $2.06 he said it was for gas money because he lives
more than 10 miles from the post office. What a joke.
I initially told him I wanted to return the poster for a $29.95 refund (the
$26 I already paid him plus $3.95 to ship it back). He said he would not
refund any of the shipping charges. I said I didn't think it was fair for me
to lose nearly $10 because he couldn't pack the thing properly. He said tough
luck and I was stupid for not requesting insurance. This led me to stop by
the post office and I was told that in some instances insurance does not
cover improperly packaged articles (I have this in writing). Again, if the
guy would just refund me the money I want, he would only be set back $1.89
($3.95 minus the extra $2.06 he pocketed for "gas money").
I doubt if I will get any money back, because he is just a private seller and
not a business. My main gripe is with the way he packed the thing. It was a
totally inappropriate way to send a poster. If I can annoy the guy just
enough so he will ship things properly to others in the future, then I will
consider it a slight victory. Of course this victory is costing me $26, but
at this point it's about principle.
Thanks to all he responded and I apologize to anyone who was annoyed
with this off topic post.

So much better than the original paint job. The mask's original paint job was
VERY basic. Virtually only a one color wash over the vinyl. I think these
vinyl masks were meant to be a real budget line. Not much detail.

How much of it is left?
Is the rock pool where the waterfall was in PLANET still there?
Is the meadow where the cornfield in PLANET and the battefield in BATTLE
still there? (The last I think I saw it was in an episode on 'Deep Space

What about the spot where Ape City was? Is that part of the park, or did

Hi Rory,
I've visited a web site once that had photos of the ruins of 'Ape City'
but for the life of me, I can't recall where. It may have been on the original
'Icarus' site but I'm not sure. The ampitheater was still there. Also,
I think the photos where taken either in the 70's OR 80's. Once again I'm
not sure. They were pretty interesting shots and it would have been so
cool to wander around.
Anyone else seen this site and know what I'm talking about or is my

This is really a Jeff Krueger or Eric Greene question. I
know that FOX owned all of that land for the longest time, that is everything
that Bob Hope didn't already own. Seems ol' Ski-nose owned just about
everything from here (the Valley) to Santa Barbara for quite awhile.
You've seen the post APE-City lake in Kung-Fu, MASH, and oodles of
other shows.
It's been about 18 years since I've been there, but I do know that
the steps that lead up to the cage area are still there as are some
remnents of rebar from the cage.
The field is still there. Roddy stood in it for his narative
for the Behind the Planet of the Apes special in 1998.
Never hiked all the way into the beach cave area. Had to cross
a nude beach souht of Free Zuma to get there and mom never let us go that
far!
I'd like to do a fotoshoot at all of those places of interest one
of these days, and bring a few apes with me for the hell of it.

Maybe he was just a lowly colonel and nobody paid him much attention.
Even if he had his Beneath rank in Planet he wouldn't need to
interact with Taylor any. What triggered his actions in Beneath was
the disappearance of 9 of his scouts. Even then he had to convince
a sufficent number of orangutans that the situation was dire in
order to launch an expedition (i.e. famine).
> other tribes of humans, (now that would make a nice prequel!).
A prequel movie probably wouldn't be successful at the moment but
there are endless opportunies for movie backstories told in comics
or other format. The 1970's Marvel mag should have done that. Here
are some examples of story ideas. There are probably dozens more
possibilities.
-Zira and Cornelius from their last appearence in Beneath up to
the point of taking off their space helmets in Escape.
-Caesar growing up between Escape and Conquest.
-Preparation for either Taylor or Brent's space expedition.
-Mandemus, Virgil, McDonald or Aldo before Battle. (Marvel did
do a two part story between Conquest and Battle but it was awful)
-Stories about the Lawgiver. Either the original Lawgiver or the
altered timeline Lawgiver. e.g., What prompted him to write
the 23rd scroll? Why is it heresy to contradict him?
-How the mutants acquired telepathy and illusions.
-How the orangutans took power from the last gorilla leader in the
original timeline.
-The abolition of the quota system before Planet.
Besides the movie universe we have the TV series universe, the
cartoon universe, the book universe, and now the new movie
universe. I have the first issue of the Dark Horse comic
set in the new movie universe and it seems pretty good.

Hi everyone!
Funny this should be brought up. I
was in the Virgin Megastore on Sunset Blvd. this week, and what to my wandering
eyes should appear but the first "Apes" book to capitalize on the 2001 interest.
David Hofstede's "Planet of the Apes- - the Unofficial Companion". The dude owes
me a complimentary copy but I picked it up and there's 4 pictures of me in it,
courtesy of yours truly. A picture of me and Natalie Trundy at the Zuma Beach
site of the Statue of Liberty ending, a shot of me on the beach where the cave
was (both of those pics were taken by none other than Eric Greene). There's a
picture of me and Natalie with Bill Blake (in ape makeup, one of those "Ape Has
Killed Ape" concerts) and me with Luiz Adami (in ape makeup) at Malibu Creek
Park. In the "fan" chapter I'm interviewed, along with Terry Hoknes, Ken Taylor
and "the Apeman". Overall, I like the book. Mostly it's a compendium, nothing in
the way of new interviews but I like that the author gives his opinion. He
reviews every episode of the live action and cartoon shows. It covers everything
- - parodies, collectibles, it doesn't just stick to the movies. Some might
consider it slight for it's $18 price tag but it's a lot of fun and perfect for
all the new fans that will be born next month.
OK, those sites. There's a small
stretch of Zuma Beach (not Point Dume as has been mentioned). You know the
opening scene of "Escape"? If you look at the rock formation behind the Army,
that's where the Statue of Liberty was in the first film. If you walk past those
rocks, the next thing is a cove. That's where the cave exteriors and stuff were
filmed.
Malibu Creek...Bill Blake is the
expert on that. He's been involved on many productions there. Let's just say
it's changed a lot. Bill's biggest pet peeve is that supposedly it's now
protected land but they've cyhanged it more since it's been "protected" than
before. We went up there for a photo shoot in '99, Adami in ape makeup that Bill
applied. He showed us whhere the waterfall was, the cornfield. We went where Ape
City was and found actual bits of the foam - - I have actual pieces of Ape City!
The photo of me and Adami in the new book was taken where Caesar has his council
meeting in "Battle". Really, the best way to see Malibu Creek is with
Bill.

"POTA" style
This is really a Jeff Krueger or Eric Greene
question. I know that FOX owned all of that land for the longest time,
that is everything that Bob Hope didn't already own. Seems ol' Ski-nose
owned just about everything from here (the Valley) to Santa Barbara for quite
awhile.
You've seen the post APE-City lake in Kung-Fu, MASH, and oodles of other
shows.
It's been about 18 years since I've been there, but I do know that the
steps that lead up to the cage area are still there as are some remnents
of rebar from the cage.
The field is still there. Roddy stood in it for his narative for
the Behind the Planet of the Apes special in 1998.
Never hiked all the way into the beach cave area. Had to cross a
nude beach souht of Free Zuma to get there and mom never let us go that
far!
I'd like to do a fotoshoot at all of those places of interest one of
these days, and bring a few apes with me for the hell of it.

Hey Brian,
I was wondering
if there was anything interesting that you could tell
us about Malibu Creek State Park -- what used to be
the Fox Ranch where so many Fox movies and TV shows were
shot.
How much of it is
left? Is the rock pool where the waterfall was in
PLANET still there? Is the meadow where the cornfield in PLANET and
the battefield in BATTLE still there? (The last
I think I saw it was in an episode on 'Deep Space
Nine' [or was it
'Voyager'?]) What about the spot where Ape City was? Is
that part of the park, or did that get sold off and had
condos built on it?
Have you ever
been to where the cave was on the beach in PLANET? I think
it was Zuma beach, though I often read it was Point
Doom.
