I find the "Planet" poster dull, I
DO like the "Beneath" one, "Escape" is alright, I love the "Conquest" one and
also the one for "Battle" (seems kinda old fashioned, with the stars' pictures
and the dramatic illustration). I'm noticing a kind of play on these old posters
with the new stuff. The new "Premiere" magazine cover plays on the "Escape"
family portrait and the manic battle scenes on some of the illustrations
remind me of the "Battle" poster.

Subject: [pota] APES posters (which do
you like best?)
Hey everyone,
I was talking
privately with Matt, who wishes he had a BENEATH 1-sheet, about what I
thought of that poster.
I think it's kind of boring. It shouls
have had the image of Ursus and the mutant on it, as the 3-sheet, insert
and window card do.
I was wondering something. . . . Which
original APES poster do you like best? I assume all of you have seen
what the original 1-sheet posters looked like. They're at the end of
the "Behind the Planet of the Apes" documentary, and they're shown in the
Inkworks card set.
Please say why you like the poster best, and why
you don't like others.
I for one LOVE the PLANET 1-sheet, though many
think it dull. I think that image of the outdoor cage is great, and
the picture of Dr. Zaius very cool -- but then I've been living with it
since I was eight. I think BENEATH's 1-sheet is unimaginative.
They could have done much better. I think ESCAPE's is great,
though maybe they shouldn't have had the three astroapes shown with their
helmets off. CONQUEST's is awesome and really makes you want to see
the movie. BATTLE's -- well, like the film, I find this one a real
comedown. BUT, maybe if what was shown in that poster's art had really
been in the movie, BATTLE might have been better.
Anyway, what do
YOU think?

.htmlBoulle definitely didn't like the Statue of Liberty ending and called it
"a temptation from the devil". Yes, that "Cinefantastique" issue is great,
except where Jacobs tries to be a credit hog. He doesn't credit Natalie
Trundy for finding Boulle's book and takes credit for the Statue of Liberty
(it's now accepted that Serling came up with it). Obviously Jacobs is THE
MAN as far as "Apes" goes, but credit where credit is due!

There's a cool book that came out a
while back about the Statue of Liberty. It's like for the anniversary. Look for
it in a library or used book store. Obviously there's the shot from "Apes" but
it shows an illustration from a post - apocalyptic story from the 1800's where
people come upon the statue. I've seen many instances where the statue was used
the same way it was in "Apes".

It's sometimes hard to know what the truth is
situations such as this. When a movie is successful everyone wants
to take credit or at least part of the credit, and wants eveyone to think
that all involved were of one mind and enthusiastic about how things were
done. Afterall, what is one to say? "Well, actually so and so
thought it was shit, but we did it that way anyhow and it works, so fuck
him." No, you paint a pretty picture for public consumption.
It goes way back to the old Hollywood publicity departments at the
studios. Anyway, I think Jacobs told the story of how the Statue of
Liberty final just came to him and one-time director Blake Edwards as they
were leaving a deli. But, it's known now that Rod Serling came up
with it -- and HE got it from someplace else. The image of a ruined,
half-buried Statue of Liberty appeared on some Sci-Fi mag covers years
before. I believe what Boulle most objected to was Serling
introducing nuclear war as the means of man's downfall. This was
antithetical to Boulle's idea of human intellectual laziness being the
cause of the reversal of man and ape.

Lunch boxes. . .
There's some neat metal "retro"
lunch boxes coming out for the new movie. I think there's three of them plus one
that's exclusive to the Tower video chain. They retail for $20
each.

Well, I don't know how the

back to Gilligan's Island!
There's a
'beach party' movie, I think "Bikini Beach" (1964) that features a Janos
Prohaska chimp named Clyde. He also played a chimp in "The Outer
Limits" episode called 'The Sixth Finger' which featured a classic John
Chambers make-up. The Eloise chimp in ESCAPE is basically this same
Prohaska costume. Janos Prohaska, I think his brother, and a bunch
of makeup artists were killed back in the early seventies when the plane
crashed bring them back from shooting this show about human evolution in
Africa, "Primal Man."

Certainly one of Rick Baker's innovations is that the background
apes have their mouths closed. That was a dead giveaway in the original films
that their mouths were open. Bill Blake told me that Chambers didn't have
anything to do with the background masks and hated 'em.
Check out the new issue of "Makeup Artist" maqgazine for excellent
info and pics on the new movie!

They're still around as are the original molds.
I've seen them sell from $500 to $2,500 depending on the character and what
film they were used in.
Really bad copies (3rd or 4th generation dupes) are out
there as well, only they are sooooooooo tiny they wouldn't even fit on a small
child. Being that latex shrinks 10-30%, a third or fourth generation
dupe is pretty darn small.
The quality of the detail is one of the best ways of
telling which film the masks were used in. Really fine detail would
indicate a "first run" mask. The molds usually are pretty worn out by
the time 25 to 30 masks have been pull from them.
Most of the ORIGINAL masks that I've seen surface in the
past few years are really badly pitted and smooth, indicating that the masks
were made from original molds that were around from the beginning.
Most of the 3rd generation dupes I have seen were duped
from poor condition masks as well. So you've got really tiny masks with
really bad surface details.
We are working on a commemorative version of a Background
Gorilla to add to our line, here's a sneak peak of the
sculpture.
take care.

POTA didn't make the top 1000. Not even the top twelve hundred!
Sure it didn't cost 7 or 8 bucks to go to the movies in '68, but I for one
am going to see that the new film does better if I have to go five
times! Even if I don't like it! I'll by a ticket and not
show. Just to prove this concept is a money maker. I don't
believe that it only made 26 million. They didn't count the overseas
receipts! I know for a fact they showed it outside the
states!
I hear you.
The only thing I see scary about that
movie list is the Jurassic Park Numbers!
And low and behold here comes JP3 at the
same time as POTA.
The release date gives Planet of the Apes
(July 27th) 9 days for Jurassic Park 3 (July 18th) to slow down
while Planet of the Apes can take the Top Spot once
released.
But 9 days? That's cutting it pretty
close.
Whlie Planet of the Apes can be a great
movie, Jurassic Park is very well known!
So FOX better get that BIG advertisement
campain going that they spoke about. because so far I see very
little.
Less than 7 weeks and
counting!

Sorry about that Jeff. Not my intention to speak ill of the dead. That
aside, those costumes su-u-u-ucked! And had no place in an A-film. I
already had my suspension of disbelief tuned to accept the evolved apes as
apes, but accepting those costumes as primitive apes was pushing it. I'm
sure even the Prohaskas would agree they were lucky to have gotten that gig.
We were unlucky they did.

Hey Rory,
Thanx for the feedback. We stare at this stuff so much that
we can get desensitized to it. Every little bit of input from the
"real word" helps us to make a better product in the long run.
Likenesses are really tough, especially when choosing a pose or expression
that's nuetral or in-between all of the varied reference fotos
available. My biggest gripe are the eyes. On any head, they're a
b*@ch and a half to get even halfway close to "right" looking.
That B&W is an actual signed copy out of my personal
collection. One of my two favorites, but not a good reference for
sculpture because he's smiling and all scrunched up. Good for the hair
though.
As for driving us nuts, try having a hi-end client that lives less than
a mile from your studio. Sometimes I feel I have to hide my car
somewhere so he won't keep dropping in un-announced so much! I
guess he feels the "by ape-pointment only" sign doesn't ape-ply to
him. Everytime he stops by for a visit it's 30 minutes to an hour of
delays and distractions. UGH!
Anyway, all is grand.
Now it's onto the CAESAR statue! Whahoo!

It's actually right in our studio's back yard. A place called
Stoney Point. I guess it's part of the same mountain range as the
Las Virgines local 20 miles away (where the Fox ranch was), that's why
the terrain is so similar.

Hey, Rory - - -
Knowing the locations doesn't bother
me. I'm very good at suspending my disbelief. The one exception might be knowing
that "Escape" opens on the Statue of liberty beach. It's so distinctive that it
just pops out at me now.
I think that book is going to get
good distribution. It looks like it's going to be the only one (at least about
the originals) to come out before the movie. It's perfect as a primer for people
who remember the originals but may have forgotten them and aren't as
knowledgeable as we are. I think stores are going to order it up as a tie-in. I
found it at Virgin Megastore. Eric Greene's book was never
there!

"Momento" is still around. I think I'll check it out and see if it's as good

I'm not surprised "Shrek" is doing so well. Create a movie the whole family

POTA figured that one out.
"Jurassic Park III" looks as if it's going to be pretty good from all I'm
seeing and reading. POTA will have it's job cut out for it.
This weekend I'm also hoping my new re-mastered DVD of "2001" arrives from
Amazon. I can't wait to check it out. I've read it's really nice.
AMC is starting to promote its "monkey movies" this month (Iwonder if they
have anything planned for next month?). Mostly stuff we've seen a zillion
times before, including the "Behind the POTA" docu. (cut into two parts), BUT
there's this thing on tonight I want to check out called "A*P*E." It's
supposed to be this REALLY BAD South Korean "King Kong" rip-off. It's on
tonight at 10 PM EST. Might be good for a few laughs.
Well, a thunder storm is beginning here, so I better send this before the

work at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment ( Apologies for those on the group

Hey Jeff,
Honestly, what do you think of the way Carter looks as Ari? Does it bother
you as much as it does me? If she looks this stupid in action in the movie,
this thing could get laughed off the screen.
In fact, I'm not sure if you're on record as to what you 'think' this new

Why not try and take in both of them, Alex? When I saw this today

already planning the Memphis one..do you have the address for the one in New
Jersey? I'll check you site again in a while to see. Thanks

Well come to think of it I think I'm going to hold out for a bigger
convention down the road. If the film is a big hit then no doubt there
will be sometime HUGE for L.A. in the weeks or months to come.
As for Jersey I wouldn't have mind but it's set for Opening Weekend July
28, 29 and I'm afraid I have plans for that weekend. So a bigger L.A.
convention will be it for me. And aslo the fact that I've always wanted to
travel to Califonia to visit.
Here's the link to the newspaper:

You'll find it in the bulletin board under ' Planet of the Ape Events'
Sorry gang. Perhaps we'll all meet in L.A. for a huge sci-fi

I would have to agree, Ari's makeup does

We do on occasion have reject heads that, unfortunately, we
have to destroy.
We used to put them up as "Grab-Bag" items on ebay from time to time,
but folks started duping them and selling pirated copies so we've pretty much
stopped selling the rejects. A shame for the true fans that would put
the items to good personal use, but FOX has its rules and franchise to look
out for, and we have to keep them happy.
Someone recently let me know about a guy who actually had purchased
stuff from us and then built a website to sell "suspect" knock-offs of
our items, and, get this, used images that he lifted from our site on
his. Needless to say, he's being investigated.
Oh it's a crazy, dirty, mixed up, greedy world out there. Gimmee a
banana smoothie, a small patch of beachfront land in the Forbidden Zone, and a
Nova lookalike (mute of course) anyday, and leave the nuttiness of humanity to
its own undoing.

Yeah I agree, the biggest problem with Ari was the fact that there
would be a crush between Ari and Leo. So they had to make her more attractive so
that the views wouldn't be so puzzled. Because If Ari would be madeup to look

I hear there's supposed to be a $100
"2001" DVD box set. I don't know what's in it. I would think any filmed extras
would also be on the cheaper one. Maybe it's one of those deals with the

"A.I." looks real good. It looks
like a somewhat darker film than the usual Spielberg sci-fi. That might hurt the
box office. Oh well, more money for "Apes".

Is there a legit reason why the she-apes look like
that? and not that 80% human crap. If the apes hate the humans so much why would
they be considered more attractive hairless. I could see, for example, that Ari
would want to look like that as an activist to protest the treatment of humans
(that would be a good excuse, actually). But it looks like all the ladies are
like that, whatever their political persuasion.
"Makeup Artist" magazine confirms
that Lisa Marie's character is named Nova.
Noooo - VA!
Nova? No sh-t!
Wow, and who says that Fox has forgotten the original? On top of everything
else towards the origianl, That's Cool!
As for all the female apes we've seen looking like Ari?
Don't forget that we haven't seen the film, all we've seen is what has been
shown to us through trailers, pics and so on.
But at least there showing a lot more on female apes in this new
revisit then the few cameos here and there like before. That's a plus in
itself.
Best,
Alex

No laying low for the Apemania troupe. We've got all sorts
of things planned for the next few weeks, and yes, for those who have been
asking, there may be a trip to New York a$ well, but nothing i$ concrete
with tho$e plan$ yet.
As far as us doing any of the new characters, that's Rick's domain.
If they ask us to participate, sure, no prob. But Rick has all the
resources to do promos with the new characters, and we are more than happy
to leave it to him and his team.
Stay tuned....

similarities to the TV show in the trailer. Not just because the humans
talk, but also they downplay the ship crash, you have two equal villians and
it looks like a "Fugitive" type story.

It's actually right in our studio's back yard. A place
called Stoney Point. I guess it's part of the same mountain range as the
Las Virgines local 20 miles away (where the Fox ranch was), that's why the
terrain is so similar.

If only Rick Baker had got the job. His Kong would have been acceptable.
The gorilla they had was as bad as the Kong who fought Godzilla.

In the "Premiere" article they say there's nothing going on between those

sure going out of their way to put Wahlberg and the chimp together in the

I read
the Dark Horse comic the other daya and it amde reference to a "half
chimp/half gorilla" and I think it was referring to Ari or one of her
descendants.
I
guess this might explain.
I
doubt they would make the female chimps so smooth around the mouth if there were
not some particular reason (maybe she's really half human and the shock ending
is that the inter breeding creates the dominant human race or
something?!?!). But wanting them to look like supermodels? This is
distubing.
Michael
I haven't heard one person who likes
the Ari makeup and I'm in that boat too. Even Rick Baker is skeptical in the new
"Makeup Artist" magazine (a must get!). He said Burton wanted them to
look like fashion models and he must have had the hots for Zira as a kid. Burton
even imported a fashion hairstyler from New York to get her hair
right.
But that's what makes Burton Burton.
I'd rather he ere on the side of originality and thoughtfulness than on playing
it safe (a la what I hear about "Pearl Harbor" and "Tomb
Raider"). I'm looking forward to it and have no problem with the
differences from the originals, though I think it'll be more faithful than we
think.

Hey Jeff,
Honestly, what do you think of the way Carter looks as Ari?
Does it bother you as much as it does me? If she
looks this stupid in action in the movie, this thing could get laughed
off the screen.
In fact, I'm not sure if you're on record as to what
you 'think' this new film will be like. I'm actually playing
close to the vest. Am I opened minded as to whether it will
work or not? My opinion is pretty much set, but I'm not
saying it because you really shouldn't say until you see what you're
talking about -- but my opinion ain't good. Still, I have my fingers
crossed that Burton can pull a rabbit out of the hat.
Don't
bother asking Mlccougar, though -- He'll be glad to tell you what he
doesn't think, but KNOWS!

It is
not so much the lack of hair that bothers me - but the lack of lines in the
facial make up. Compare to Tim Roth for example....
Michael
Alex - - -
Is there a legit reason why the
she-apes look like that? and not that 80% human crap. If the apes hate the
humans so much why would they be considered more attractive hairless. I could
see, for example, that Ari would want to look like that as an activist to
protest the treatment of humans (that would be a good excuse, actually). But it
looks like all the ladies are like that, whatever their political
persuasion.
"Makeup Artist" magazine
confirms that Lisa Marie's character is named Nova.
Noooo - VA!

Yeah I agree, the biggest problem with Ari was the fact that
there would be a crush between Ari and Leo. So they had to make her more
attractive so that the views wouldn't be so puzzled. Because If Ari would be
madeup to look like a real chimp or something close to THADE. people would
then think, this Leo has a major PROBLEM! And in return it wouldn't have
been believeable.
And so that was the reason, I just didn't want to get into
details.
But one thing that Burton did that was great was to made a few
more apes that looked like Ari so that the charater didn't seem so
fake. As it is seen in the trailer B.
But again it's nothing really new, as there is no Orang on the
face of the earth that looks like the ones in the Original? Orangs don't
look like Dr. Zaius, they look very different from what was presented in the
original. The whole point is, be unique and creative. And so both the
originals and the revisit clearly are.
Best,
Alex

I, for one, wonder . . . if they've decided to downplay Ari's human heritage,
why make apes that look like apes, and females that don't? If Lisa Marie's
character has the same 80's Janet Jackson, Nina Blackwood, Paula Abdul,
Mariah Carey looking hairdo, then why not give her the big chimp canines as
well? I don't know if these questions will be answered in the film but I
don't think so. And speaking of apes looking so apelike -- They do full face
or even three-quaters but in profile they don't.
I think this film will have something I like and some things I don't. Will
Burton pull a rabbit out of his hat? I think he'll pull some sort of
creature out of it. Rabbit? Well, we'll just have to wait and see and hope
it's not a weasel. <.html

Hey, Alex - - -
I don't know what the distribution
is like for "Makeup Artist" magazine. I got it here at a news stand but of
course the film industry is here. Maybe Brian knows.
The article is about 19 pages long.
Lots of photos, nice sized too since it's makeup artists that "make up" it's
audience. Good pics of the principals (best photo I've seen of Ari, looks like
Leo is holding her hostage). There's also good pics of Heston (we learn he
refused to wear the simian teeth, so his mouth kinda droops). There's even a
picture of Baker in the makeup, though he admits his face is bad for
it.
Baker says he was against Tim
Roth being in the film because his nose was too big. But Burton chose the actor
over the nose and Baker was glad he did. We also learn they got those shots of
the apes running ahead of the horses by towing a conveyor
belt!
I be interested to hear what Brian
thought of the article.
