I've seen this magazine in the past at my local borders.  I went looking for
this issue today, but they didn't have it.  It will show up soon enough.

I saw the Starlog with the new APES article in it, but since they want $9.00
an issue now, I just read the article and put the mag back.  Ah, thank the
Lawgiver for these big bookstores.

Hey Gang,

Not one to toot my own horn (too much) but Ain't It Cool News has a link to the first teaser for our latest non-ape monster movie, "Jeepers Creepers".

Fantastic!

Did you do the makeups for the film? I had no Idea this film was coming out.

Looks scary a hell! I'll see it for sure.

Very cool! two thumbs up!

Best,

Alex

I agree with Alex!!!   This looks like it'll be the sleeper hit of the
summer, and next year YOU will be nominated for best make-up right alongside
with the great Rick Baker.   You heard it here first.  (BTW, Baker will win.)

If you can't find it in you local newstand, go to their website <http://www.makeupmag.com/> and order it from there.

They also have some cool links to Stan Winston's Ape Tests as well as links to sites with unauthorized postings of Burton's Apes.

.html
.htmlYou know how PLANET OF THE APES is often, especially by FOX, talked about in
terms of it being a saga; that it's the entire series of films, and some
would even throw in the TV series, cartoon series, and even the Marvel comics?

Well, I -- of course -- don't think of it that way.   When I watch the
original film, I don't sit there and think, This is just the first part of a
bigger story.   I consider it an entirely complete and seperate thing.

I also feel the same way about the sequels, even though they often reference
events from the previous film.

Anybody else think this way?   However, I know there must be some of you
younger fans out there that saw these films on TV for the first time, and
probably out of sequence, and so therefore see it as a five-film saga.   If
so, please say so, I'd be interested in knowing.

Hey, I just went to official website for the first time in weeks. Alex, I think they ripped you off. They've got Ari's opening lines, they've got Wahlberg saying "What is this place?" Very much like yours. Maybe they should just hire you and cut out the middle men.

I do, in a way. But when they made the first one they didn't know there'd be
another.
Same thing with the second. Now by the third it was obvious with the open
ending they were going to milk it for all it was worth. But whether
consciously aware of it or not, you could just feel that things were changed
or outright ignored from film to film. Not much point in looking for reasons
or answers. No one had a video at home to check it with back then anyway.
Just sit back, eat your popcorn and hope for another one.

It sure did,Thats why I wish they would have just cut a day of shooting or
just transferred a little bit of money from the other areas of production to
supply the money for make-ups for the primitive apes.I'm sure they could have
done all the shooting with the primitive apes in one day and it would have
looked 1000 times better.I like Escape, but those "Gilligan's Island" apes
really do put a damper on the scenes they are in.

This really sickens me, so I'm sharing my indigestion with the rest of
you.

As we get closer to the release of the new movie, more and more of the
"actual movie props" will show up on eBay. Weather the sellers are
greedy or just plain stupid or both is of no consequence, what matters
is that FOX considers any of the items that they themselves have not
earmarked for auctions or contest giveaways stolen contraband.

I know several eBay bidders who have paid for original ape items from
Rick's lab and never received them from the sellers. I also know of a
couple of folks who won items paid for them, received them, and then had
to turn them over to authorities, so they're out the cash and the goods.

So a word to the wise, these items are stolen, whether they were "found"
or not. FOX owns them, and any seller that tries to convince fans
differently is out of his or her mind.

Be careful folks.

Actually,on the subject of female orangutans, there was one in the original movies. In Conquest, the orangutan at the book store,(getting the book of the shelf),is supposed to be a female. All the times I had watched it before I hadn't given it any thought. But then about a year and a half ago, while talking to someone who makes custom figures,I asked if he ever thought of making a female orangutan. He said "What do you mean, like the one in Conquest?"I said "Huh?" Then he said about the one in the book store. He said "Yeah, look at her better next time you watch it.You'll see that she has the 'softer' more subtle makeup like the female chimps. And she has a more 'feminine' appearance".Well after we hung up,I got out my tape of Conquest,FFWD it to the book store scene, and gave it a look. While I'm still not 100% that he is right,I think he may be...I do see a difference in her appearance.Maybe some of it is because of "power of suggestion" or maybe he is totally correct,it is a female or!
angutan....

So,if any of you out there in the group have any thoughts on this,or if you can confirm or dis-prove this female orangutan theory, please do so.

    Hey Rory,

Speaking for me,here are my thoughts on this posting of your's:

You know how PLANET OF THE APES is often, especially by FOX, talked about
    in
terms of it being a saga; that it's the entire series of films, and some
would even throw in the TV series, cartoon series, and even the Marvel
    comics?

Well, I -- of course -- don't think of it that way.   When I watch the
original film, I don't sit there and think, This is just the first part of
    a
bigger story.   I consider it an entirely complete and seperate thing.

I also feel the same way about the sequels, even though they often
    reference
    events from the previous film.

Well as for tying everything together, awhile back,I posted my POTA
timeline. In it,I tied the movies and tv series into it.Since I don't count
the cartoon or the comics as APES canon,I left them out.So in a way,I do look
on them as a continuing timeline. They "can" be tied together as a saga if you
    want them to be.

Anybody else think this way?   However, I know there must be some of you
younger fans out there that saw these films on TV for the first time, and
probably out of sequence, and so therefore see it as a five-film saga.   If
so, please say so, I'd be interested in knowing.

But as for looking at the films as entirely different things, not tied
together,I can see how you do.I mean I do look at Planet as the best of the
lot of course, and I do watch it as its own story.BUT,if I think of them as a
saga, then I look at it like this:I look at the 1st three as a trilogy, and the
last two are very much their own stories. Its not something I really think on
when I do watch them, and I will admit my feelings kinda go back n forth on
this subject.Sometimes I do tie them together, other times I look at them as
seperate entities.I'm really not sure how I feel on this subject because, like
I said,I can see it both ways. But now you have a rough idea of how I feel on
this.Ok,I gave no concrete answer but maybe you'll know what I mean....

    New Jersey Convention!

Now as to why I'm posting.I'm VERY sure there is no way I'll be going
there.(I have the "Snowball's chance in Hell" of actually getting
there.)BUT,I would very much like to get Harrison's,Wagner's,and Colman's
autographs. Therefore,I'm asking you,the members of the group,if you could
    get
them for me.Of course I'd pay you back all the money it cost for their
autographs/pictures,plus half the cost of a one day's admission or
    something
    like that.

If any of you would be willing to do this for me,please contact me
    privately
so we can work out the details.THANK YOU!!!

I just looked at the sight again, and seen that Buck Kartalian (Julius) and
Joe Russo (author,Planet of the Apes Revisited) will also be attending.Add
    them to my list...!!!!

I AM serious about the above mentioned deal.If any of you are going to this
show,I would work out something with you if you would get their autographs
for me.Again,if you will be attending, and are willing to do this for
    me,please let me know.Thanks.....

Different strokes for different folks I guess - the very first time I saw
"Escape" I thought immediately that it was the very same beach. I thought
that it was perhaps deliberate - audiences knowing what to expect from the
first two films would then be taken aback when the first thing that pops up

Likewise, I think that despite my lack of enthusiasm for the new film I will
probably buy the soundtrack before I've even seen it. I quite like Danny
Elfman, and it seems to me that the bizarre world of the Planet of the Apes
is perfectly suited to his talents. I can't wait to hear what he comes up
    with.

Just as long as they don't end up with a bloody song album.

I don't seem to be experiencing any problems - I suspect it may be more
related to your ISP or something like that than Yahoo. For example, it would
appear to me that all of you AOLers are having a bit of trouble whereas I

Having only been exposed to the films through TV (in the order Battle,
Conquest, Planet, Beneath, Escape, Adventure Comics, Marvel Mags, TV series)
I tend to look at them mostly as one saga. I do however see the original
film as a stand alone work. However, I also see it as part of a greater saga
as well, if that's possible. I also tend to look upon the first two as a
pair. The latter three films however, I very much see as being parts of a
whole. Hmm, I've really not made myself clear there.

The comics I see as part of the saga too, although the Marvel series can
definitely stand alone as a wierd, far-out vision of Planet of the Apes.

Funny you should mention that, Rory. I've just recently been playing Tomb
Raider 3 (yeah, I know they're up to about five games by now, but I'm a
little behind) and was interested to spot something Ape-related.

The first part of the game that took my fancy was a level that takes place
in the abandoned Aldwych underground station in London - very
"Beneath"-like, right down to the hideously mutated humans. But anyway...

In the re-released version of Tomb Raider 3 ("The Lost Artifact") there are
some extra levels. One of them is a kind of abandoned zoo/aviary type place
in France. The level itself is named "It's a Madhouse... A Madhouse!" and
the walls are decorated with various French pictures including, in several
places, the attached picture. Looks like someone there is an Apes fan!

This is silly!   When the TV show comes out here in the US on DVD, the
so-called 'art' will be done here by Americans for what is an American show
based on an American film series on American DVDs!   You people will just

Just read the Planet of the Apes Movie Review.

This Mr X does nothing but comment on things of the movie that everyone knows because of the Trailers. So where are the spoilers?

You have a nice site, but these kind of fake reports do nothing but turn off visitors to your site. So why do it? I mean I don't think that anyone is that lame to believe such a fake review.

Just got back from the Planet of the Apes. Or, specifically, the con at the Shrine Auditorium in L.A. Got there a little early and paid an extra $3 to get inside early. Didn't want to miss out on the goodies. Not to worry, there was plenty. But got to go to the prop room before the crowds.

Pretty incredible. We were allowed to touch so my friend took my picture wielding a couple weapons, including the sword with holes as seen on Poster #2. Later, I even got a picture of Booth Colman wielding it. There were playing cards for the apes, Walhberg's weapons, little statues. Unfortunately I won't know what most of this stuff is for until the movie comes out. They had those sticks seen in the trailer used to take the humans out of the cage. Oh, they even had Tim Burton's director's chair. Tables of stuff. More weapons hanging on the wall. Pullover masks of the major characters used in long shots. What else... the ape flags, what looked like a ape first aid kit. The only thing I can think of they didn't have were any costumes.

Giveaways: I was led to believe they had the new poster but it was Poster #2 (the ape army), so I can't report on any new poster. Nor did they show a new trailer. They DID show a behind the scenes thing that will be cool on DVD. Alot of it is stuff seen on the website. The only knew thing that sticks out is I got to hear Limbo (Paul Giamatti) talk for the first time. He sounded like Lew Ayres in "Battle". It showed the appliance being applied to Clark Duncan. I enjoyed this production and people seemed intrigued, but they didn't applaud much. They applauded clips from "AI" more.

More giveaways: the best was a series of 5 posters given outthroughout the day. Some of you might have seen the image of characters in shadow kinda like meet the Beatles. There's a card with Wahlberg, Estella, Helena and Thade you may have seen. Those were given out too, but these posters are great. They'd give out a stack of Wahlbergs, then some Estellas, then Clarke Duncan, then Krull, then Thade, then Ari. OK, 6. Those who kept coming back to the giveaway table (like me) were rewarded. Also given were an ape coin and a Topps trading card. Oh, and an "AI" poster based on that film's "Flesh Faire". When Stan Winston did his signing he gave out the standard "AI" poster but I didn't wait in line for that. There were also "AI" lapel pins, "Evolution" stickers, "Jurassic 3" posters, I guess that's it.

Hung out with Booth Colman. I printed up Mez's life story and gave it to him along with the link. He doesn't have a computer (or a DVD player, he votes for the Oscars so they send him DVDs but he can't watch them), but he said he will check out her site at a friend's. Booth is like Ron Harper and Naughton in that he kinda doesn't like the show (while Roddy and Mark Lenard seemed proud of it) so I thought it would do to show how it's impacted people. Also caught up with Eric Greene, was impressed that I got his book signed by Jane Goodall, showed him the new book I'm in. Was reunited with the biggest "Ape" collector I know, Joe Farrell. There was a lot of "Ape" stuff for sale, expensive as usual, but nothing particularly unigue. One vendor had Mego figures of various nakednesses in sandwich bags, a stark naked Cornelius with a broken leg and arm for $10.

Stan Winston spoke for an hour, then signed for a half hour. I thought it was weird that they scheduled him the same day as "Apes" sice he was connected to it for YEARS then unceremoniously dropped and replaced by Rick Baker. Stan spoke well of both Burton and Baker, saying he couldn't wait to see "Apes"  and calling Baker the best in the business and the one that keeps everyone on their toes. I thought that was very classy. Let's face it, Winston is no slouch and is represented this summer by "Pearl Harbor", "AI" and "Jurassic Park", so I don't think I could decide who's better. Winston said they both worked on "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman". He also said he could kick Baker's ass. Winston also shot down the idea that CGI will "replace" anything. "Shrek" will not kill off quirky animation like "South Park" or puppets like "The Muppets" or live-action dinosaurs. There's room for everything . This got a big applause. He wouldn't reveal what he did for "AI" but there were generous clips.

For the "Apes" presentation the guest was Cary whats-his-name (Krull). A Fox rep warmed us up with clips from some Fox movies including "Apes". He said "Apes" is important to the studio, not just the new film but the original series and it's legend. Cary was wonderful, very humble and softspoken> I was surprised, I guess I was expecting a jokey Jackie Chan type. Ah, stereotypes! He mentioned the social conscience of the original during the Vietnam era and said this new one won't be as socially hard hitting. He likened it to "Star Wars" more than the original "Apes" but was respectful of Burton's vision. Said Burton was interested in creating what an actual ape society would be like, not "animals with guns". Cary was very enthusiastic about "ape school" and showed some of his moves, which got applause. Talked about how he often gets cast as bad guys, which is the plight of Asian actors in Hollywood (said he would NOT play the stereotypical Japanese tourist, that he has to respect what he does). Talked about his past in martial arts films, that it has become a crass business. Mentioned the plight of real apes and the use of their hands as ashtrays, that we need to examine our humanity and that's what Burton attempts. That's what I remember off the top of my head. I taped his talk and will go through it later. I admire him very much, I hope Krull has a big role.
That's about it. Didn't buy anything but a"The Fly" promo button ("Help Me...Please Help Me") and a Coke.

Yeah, I'm still airing out the house too!  My favorite line, besides all the unnecessary G'dams by the lame General, was from the blonde love interest,"Be gentle, Big Guy."

It started with a ship on the high seas, captain and crew member talking about how big the APE (in the cargo hold) was and that he had enuff gas in him to keep him asleep for 5 days.  BOOM!  The little plastic model of the boat explodes and there's this 36 foot cigar store gorilla splashing around with a giant (dead) shark.  Go figure.

That one certainly takes the cake as all-time Stink-o-rama!!

They are just trying to prepare people. By now they realize "Apes"' reputation and they no it's not quite that. Today Cary bla bla bla specifically said it has more in common with "Star Wars" than the original "Apes". That doesn't mean it will be a bad movie but if they want a script as ambitious as the original they're not going to get it.

I don't know if Tim Roth is a fan, but he bothered to watch the TV show and talked to Roddy about acting in it, so I'd say there's some interest.

      Yeah, Mez!
With the release slated for a little over a month away you'd think we'd be
inundated by them.  I've only seen the commercial twice.  And once was on the
Fox movie channel.  And the trailer only once, and that was because I chanced
to walk past the theater by the bookstore.

A run down on what's coming:

HBO First Look in July 30 min. special
E! Behind the scenes 30 min. special
Pepsi Commercials as was with Star Wars
      POTA Toy Commercials
      3rd Trailer June 22nd
FOX Channel 30 min. speacil as was with X-Men
And hopefuly Trailer T.V. spots as we finally enter July.

Be careful waht you wish for, because ready or not here it comes!

They actually covered this in the trades, Mez. The industry is having a
downturn and they want to advertise closer to the release dates to maximize
the investment. In the case of "Godzilla" it was overkill long before the
movie arrived. The director said people wanted to see "Godzilla" months
before it arrived. Plus there's just so many damn movies there's no
      billboards available yet!

Hey y'all, Florida was brill, I miss home so much I was even eating

Observation: Didn't see ONE measly PotA trailer on TV or a Burton
reference anywhere in all our store/mall wanderings, apart from the
new publication of Boulle's book which -- oddly -- sports a cover
shot taken from the new film. Which is a tad misleading, I think. On
the other hand, there's plenty of coverage for Disney's new Atlantis
movie and 'Tomb Raider'. Hope this is just the silence before the
      storm.

Now my question for Michael and Terry: Are there still official PotA
Tv Series videos left, and would either or both of you be willing to
have your contact details splashed on my site for those who want to
make a purchase? If so, please let me know where specifically to

Yeah, the reason it reads so fake is because all that is covered on the review is simply scenes both seen in trailers and pics from the net.
Along with the fact that if POTA just got a rating of PG-13 as seen on my site with the latest POTA T.V. Spot then no doubt there had to be a viewing. Along with the fact that if Elfman is working on the soundtrack of coures he's going to include there as well...

Over all it's all a buch of ideas taken for both the trailers and internet latest news.
      So again nothing new.

I only hope he was talking about Star Wars the Original and not Phantom Menace!
      ARRR!!!!

It sounds like you had a great time Jeff and I would like to post this review of your's on my Bulletin Borad so that everyone can see how great it was. I am impressed.
That is of course if this is not a FAKE review! You don't know someone by the name of MR.X do you?

      hehehe!!
      just kidding...

      Best,
      Alex

P.S. if you can ever get to those pictures I'll post them as well.
When I go myself to a convention I want to not only take pictures but also take video, then convert it to 'real player files' for the site. Not a bad idea.

Now all I need is a CONVENTION! Jeeezz...

Mark Lenard died on November 22, 1996 (multiple myeloma).

The show was too expensive for the kind of ratings it had.

I had no idea what that was until I looked it up tonight. It's a form
      of bone marrow cancer.

Well, let's be honest. It was done on a shoestring and slammed into a
timeslot it had a snowball's chance in hell of surviving on a first
outing (Fridays, 8 p.m.). I think one of the reasons it did so much
better ratings-wise in the UK is because the Brits gave it a Sunday
night timeslot. With that and some bedding in time I think it could
have taken off in the US too. I mean, who thought ST:TNG was good in
its first season??? It wasn't until the writers stopped ripping off
storylines from the original series and had a chance to develop the
new characters that it became a hit. /Mez
