Hm. Sounds like biz talk for 'We have no confidence in the box office
of [name the film], so let's not waste too much money advertising it!'

So an overgrown lizard with the breath of death gets preferential
treatment over our loveable apes? I demand a recount!!!

I've often thought the shuttle solid rocket boosters would make
terrific billboards. All we need is for our people in FL to practice
their rappelling and get creative with some paint. :) /Mez

Mark Lenard passed away Nov. 22, 1996. I had the pleasure of meeting him in
1994 just before Star Trek: Generations came out at a special Star Trek
autograph signing at NASA in Houston. He was a great man and signed
everything I had for free. He was also selling pictures for sale that he
would sign, but I don't remember if he had anything from Apes. At the time I
only knew him from Star Trek (as Spock's father, Sarek) so I didn't have any
POTA stuff for him to sign.

When July comes around, visit www.hbo.com for they're listings. Right now all they have is for June so again we won't know until July 1st comes around.

FOX (public) Channel - Not Cable Family Channel will air a special, again will not be know until July, last year they did a special on X-Men and the year before, Star Wars. So POTA is up this year.

July 16th MTV will air a special a 30 min special with Wahlberg & scenes, that is known because I saw it myself advertised on MTV.

If the adds on Pepsi are True that we saw on the Japanese site, then no doubt a huge promo will follow as it did with Star Wars. Including T.V. Spots.

Toy Commercials are common, so no surprise there.

Sci-Fi Channel is still up in the air so we still have to wait and see.

Trailer 3, 22nd of July and if not, earlier, mid July before the 27th.

E! Channel Behing the scenes 30 min. special is known because they do specials like this for all Big Summer Films. Incuding Star Wars and X-Men the last two years. But again Behind the scenes specials are never released until days before the release of the film simply for spoiler reasons.

Oh and by the way: Charton Heston is right now on the Denise Miller show (HBO)
Sorry I just caught the end of it. But again visit www.hbo.com for the next showing in your area. God I hope they repeat it again because I JUST MISSED IT! And God only knows what he said about Planet of the Apes!!!!

AHHHHHH!!!!!!!

DAMN IT ALL TO HELL!!!!!!!

No joke! I was changing channels while I was writing this!

Best,
Alex

.html Hi Bry,  it's the other Bri here.

Yes, Mr Booth Colman is alive and well.  I think Jeff said he was at the  Shrine APE show last weekend, and he visited our studio last year (see attached) for an interview and a hand casting session.  Really nice guy.  We used his hands for our Dr. Zaius mannequin, so there's a little bit of both Zaius' in the final work. <http://apemania.com/DISPLAYS/MANNEQUINS/Orangs.htm>

I've heard talk of a sequel, but no talk of a series as of yet.  Jeff, what've you heard?

Tommy Lee as an ape?  Not bad...

Very true Mez, it was aired at about 6pm on Sunday evenings and
although only 6 years old I remember it was about the only time all
week the family got together to watch the same show (even my parents
    loved it !!).

It was all we talked about the next day at school so it must have
been going down well with the UK public at least (oh what fine taste
we have !). I read somewhere that the original Star Trek was close to
being cancelled before fan power managed to convince some exec' that
it was worth gambling for one more season, (which was when it then
took off). Why oh why at 6 years old wasn't I on a plane travelling
across the pond to the Fox tv studios in L.A., armed with my placard,
loud hailer and in my Go Ape t-shirt ready to protest at the
    cancellation !!

You only would have had to go as far as New York City.  It was the CBS TV
Network that cancelled the POTA TV show -- and they wouldn't have listened to
you.  American TV networks are heartless bastards.

I remember writing a letter to CBS begging them not to cancel the show.  I
glued a picture of Dr. Zauis to it and drew tears coming out his eyes.

    What a nut I was!

Well, that's because I had. But never fear, I remembered about it again, so
    here it is.

The interview is from TV Zone Special #17 ("Lost Voyagers Special"), June
1995 (interview conducted by Marc Shapiro). Last I saw, you can still order
this issue from the publisher, Visual Imagination for ÂŁ3.99 (UK) or $7.99

their back issue pages. (They have a website at www.visimag.com, so you
might be able to order from there - I don't know, I haven't looked)

Apologies for any typos - I'm still getting used to a new piece of OCR
software. Well you didn't think I'd sit and type it myself did you?

    Enjoy!

    -----

TWO YEARS after the demise of the first run episodes of the Planet of the
Apes television series, a series of two-hour movies entitled The New Planet
of the Apes (actually paste-ups of the aforementioned show's 16 one-hour
episodes) began airing on television sets worldwide. That did not surprise
actor Ron Harper who played astronaut Alan Virdon in the short lived series.
What is surprising to Harper, 20 years to the day the first instalment of
Apes aired, was how well those movies did.

"Those movies were getting ratings that surpassed those of the individual
episodes," chuckles Harper at the wonder of it all. "Why? I don't have the
slightest idea. Maybe the two shows cut together offered a bit more variety.
All I know is that the response to those movies [which have appeared with
surprising regularity along with syndicated runs of the series] has been
    amazing."

    Good Sounds

Harper, a personable actor currently plying his trade on the Hollywood
voiceover circuit, came to the attention of Planet of the Apes producers
Herbert Hirschman and Stan Hough in the Spring of 1974. Acting opposite
intelligent simians was the last thing on Harper's mind.

'I was making plans to marry my first wife," chuckles the actor who also
starred in another populist favourite, Garrison's Gorillas. "We had a June 1
date set and I got a call to fly out to Los Angeles and test for Planet of
the Apes on May 31- I went out, tested for the show, flew back to New York,
got married and my wife and I went to Spain for our honeymoon. We had not
been in Spain very long when I got a call from my agent, telling me they
wanted me to come back to Los Angeles and test with other people. I told
them I was on my honeymoon and that I had other things on my mind at the
moment besides stepping in front of the camera. But they wanted me back so
bad that they were willing to pay to fly my wife and I back to LA. They
insisted that it was important so we flew back and I tested again. I went
back to New York, my agent called and said, 'Pack your bags. We're starting
    to shoot right away'."

What Harper was returning to was a version of the highly successful Planet
of the Apes film series. American astronauts Alan Virdon (Harper) and Pete
Burke (James Naughton) stumble into a Time warp and stumble out on Earth
2000 years into the future where they find English-speaking, super
intelligent apes lording it over the last remnants of the human race who
have become slaves. Making the transition from the films to television was
Roddy McDowall as the astronaut's ape friend Galen. Harper was familiar with
the Apes films and is candid in his assessment of their quality or lack of.
"The first film was very interesting. The idea of reversing the roles of
apes and humans was a novel one. But beyond that first film, I think they
ran out of steam as to what to do with this crazy premise. I thought the
    series went downhill real fast.

"But the series, based on the fact that the five films made $100s of
millions worldwide, was a direct sale to the network [CBS]. We didn't even
    have to shoot a pilot."

    Character Decisions

James Naughton was subsequently cast in the role of Pete Burke and the pair
of human actors reported to production meetings in late June of '74 in
preparation for the July 1 beginning of production. "The big thing during
our first production meeting was trying to decide what the first names of
the astronauts should be. I thought that was kind of funny."

Another bone of contention, reports Harper, was the nature of his character
and how he should be played.

"To a certain extent they modelled my character after CharIton Heston's
character in the first Planet of the Apes film," he recalls. "The intent was
to make Virdon a little bit more human. They gave me a history, a wife and
child that were referred to in one or two of the episodes. They tried to
fill me out and make me more of a well-rounded human being. We were a little
at odds at how I should play Virdon. The producers wanted me to play him
very strong and macho. I thought I was a pretty good actor and so I had it
in mind to play him, in some scenes, more humanly, sensitive and sometimes
soft. But, as we developed the fine points of the series, the producers told
me to forget all that and to just use my deep chest voice," he laughs.

The first episode of Planet of the Apes aired on September 13, 1974. Harper
recalls "going in with the idea that it was going to be an action adventure
    series".

"But it became more obvious that was the case as the season progressed. The
scripts were emphasizing action and interaction with the apes rather than
deep storylines. The producers would get awfully upset if we didn't have
some kind of action going in the first five pages of a script."

What also came to Harper's attention from the word go was that the Planet of
the Apes television series was essentially one trick pony.

    One Idea Show

"It was a one idea show," sighs the actor. "And once we got past that one
idea, the actors and, more importantly, the audience had seen it all. Our
story was one of us would get captured by the apes and the other two would
have to rescue him. It got to the point where Jim and I would pick up a
script each week and the first words out of our mouth would be 'whose turn
is it to be rescued this week...?'"

Churning out an Apes episode under seemingly formula limitations was,
nevertheless, a lot of hard work and, says Harper, worthy of a few
    well-placed anecdotes.

"This was a very difficult show to make," he reflects. "We were given seven
days to do an episode but, I swear, some weeks it felt like we were knocking
them out in five days or less. The human beings in this show never rode
horses and so we were always running and always being chased by the apes.
Some directors, particularly if a script was a little thin, would say,
'Okay, go out there about 2-300 yards and run into the camera'.

"We had an episode [Tomorrow's Tide] where Jim and I had to be filmed
underwater being menaced by a shark. We had to go down 35 feet into the
ocean, with lead weights tied to our rags, wearing a mask and a breathing
device. They brought in the cameras and a mechanical shark. At the
director's signal we had to take off the mask and swim around and try to
act. They figured they would save air by starting us at the bottom rather
than having us free dive into the water first. But it was real cold and,
after a couple of hours, they basically had to haul us out because we were
close to getting hypothermia," moans the actor.

    Notables

The actor concedes that much of his Planet of the Apes journey "is a blur"
but recalls a couple of episodes where he felt he shined.

"The Horse Race was a wonderful satire and, by comparison to other episodes,
it had some bulk to it. Humans were not able to ride horses but Virdon could
and so the apes were trying all sorts of tricks to keep him from winning the
race. But of course none of it worked. I also liked The Legacy because I got
to be more diverse in my acting style. I was able to show some of my
humanity. That was a welcome break from the usual requirements of the
    scripts we got."

Harper recalls "admiring the stamina of the actors playing the apes".

"The make-up and costumes were really hot. Jim and I were running around in
next to nothing and we were uncomfortable so you can only imagine what Roddy
and Mark were going through. But Roddy had been through this ape stuff
before so it didn't really surprise him."

    Co-Star

The actor, in a surprising bit of candour, reports that he and his human
co-star "did not become very close during the making of the show".

"I think a big part of that was the result of us not being together very
long. We respected each other as actors but, away from the set, he was a
little cool. Jim's part was originally intended to be funnier than what he
turned it into. The producers conceived of the role of Pete as a comedic
foil for my character since they didn't really need two heroes in the show.
But I don't think Jim was interested in playing the comic guy which had to
make his stay on the show a little uncomfortable."

Planet of the Apes's early ratings were what Harper describes as
"respectable". But four episodes into the first run, it became evident that
audiences were getting tired of the routine and leaving in droves.

"The reason that happened is that we kept doing the same story over and over
again," the actor laments. "You need a lot of imagination to keep Science
Fiction going and our writers only seemed to be able to come up with the
same storyline over and over again.

"After a while there was a real sense on the set that this show was not long
for this world. There was shock and despair and I think that came with much
reluctance because everybody had such high hopes for the series. The feeling
on the set was 'What happened here? This was supposed to have been an
    automatic three-year run.'

The last first run episode of Planet of the Apes aired on December 27, 1974.
But that was not the end of the apes. "After the original run somebody came
up with the idea of putting two episodes together into a series of movies
and calling them 'The New Planet of the Apes'. The films have aired pretty
regularly over the years and the ratings have continued to be quite good."

Years before Ron Harper went Apes, he was at the head of another favourite,
the WWII Dirty Dozen clone Garrison's Gorillas, which was yet another one
season wonder (Sept 5, 1967 to Sept 17, 1968). Harper, who played Lieutenant
Craig Garrison in the series, claims that show had a different problem

"The scripts were quite good and the ratings were very good," reports the
actor. "The reason the show was cancelled was because it was perceived as
being too violent. There were a group of senators in the US Congress who
were raising a stink. We were surprised when they took us off. Unfortunately
there was this pocketful of people who said the show was too violent and
    that it had to go."

Harper, concluding his Apes odyssey, is surprised that 1994 was, in fact,
the 20th Anniversary of the premiere of the series. He looks back at the
show with a sense of whimsy and melancholy.

"It was a good idea that, unfortunately, was not properly executed. If we
had imaginative writers, we could have stretched out the stories we had and
really created something interesting. I'm not saying they weren't talented.
I'm just saying that they didn't have what it took to make the series work.
Everyone always seems to blame the failure of a series on the writers. I
    know they weren't blaming me.

"At least I don't think so."

They only had 2 Attars and 1 Leo. I was going to pick them up, but they rung
up at $9.82 apiece. I figured I could find them somewhere cheaper later.

They looked pretty good though. Better than I thought considering Hasbro's
    track record.

There were some auctions with pics on eBay. Also, the latest issue of
Tomart's Action Figure Digest (pictures of Harry Potter figures on the cover)

Has any one read the origonal Planet of the Apes book? I read it two
years ago for a book report.Found it at the school libary, and I
purchased it the first week it had just been relested . Can I
say "What did they do?" Some people seem to think the Burtons' new
film is really far feched . They ovibuslly have not read thebook!

All series are great.I'm not complaning about that.I'm just amazed
by how diffrent the book is .Heck , they could make an auctely re-
make of the 1st POTA film and make it like the book.Like they wold do
    that .

My favoriet POTA movie so far is film number three . Despite the
ending. It was hart warming and funny.Loved it how Zira creamed
    Cornilus during the trial.

    Bryan,

Marc Singer played Dalton in the episode "The Galdiators."

Some of his other credits include the film "The Beastmaster" (1982) and the
    TV mini-series "V" (1983)

Yeah, he does look like Kevin Bacon. Let's see, he was in "Young and
the Restless" in '99....Take a look at his filmography at the IMDb
(link below), maybe you'll recognize something you've seen him in?

Well I read the original book too. While it is not a bad read, the movie is
far superior to the book on which its premise was based. As to your comment
of how different it (the movie) is than the book, well when they were first
planning the movie, they WERE going to set it in the high tech Ape world of
the book. They eliminated that idea to cut costs.(I myself am very glad they
did so.I  really like the idea that they shun too high of technology
because it ruined the human world,so they avoided it so it wouldn't destroy
their's as well.)I just said it,but I'll say it again,I'm glad they did the

movie is how it is.....And yes,as I said,I read the book...If you are
implying that "I" think Burton's film is way far fetched, you're right,I
do.His thing is as far from being Planet of the Apes,as the movie is from
    being like the book.

All series are great.I'm not complaning about that.I'm just amazed
by how diffrent the book is .Heck , they could make an auctely re-
make of the 1st POTA film and make it like the book.Like they wold do
    that .

    Well they should have done this,film the book's story.While I still wouldn't
be too thrilled about them trying to revamp APES,I wouldn't be complaining if
they would have done Boulle's book in movie form. That would have been ok to
see that played out.And you're right on one thing, they probably never would
do the book as a movie, its too much of a "thinking" novel.I don't think the
kids that they are trying to market Burton's film to have the attention span
to "get" the book. All they want is MTV style flash, and some sfx,and Fox is
giving it to them.Which is too bad really.....

My favoriet POTA movie so far is film number three . Despite the
ending. It was hart warming and funny.Loved it how Zira creamed
    Cornilus during the trial.

And for me,PLANET is "the" best.

I like the idea that Burton is showing for the new movie.I hope it
is even more darker then the origonal movies and book. What a lot of
people don't know is that many books espically comics are more darker
then what they pot out on film.

I'm probaly going to end up loving the new movie .Hophely it will
talk about issues that are important today like they did in the
previouse films.I hope people give the new movie a chance.

Yes the novel for the origonal book was a big thinking book. But
that is what I loved about it.I'm really intersted in human nature
and that kind of stuff .It's kind of like Animal Farm meets
    Gluliver's Travel are something.

Consideribal athurity called Haristas who held such belifes and
whose dogmas have been repeated by the orangutangs ever since . -
    Pierre Boule

Now I see were you comming from . I take it that you don't like the
orangutangs that much.I on the other hand love the dear things .I
like all the races really . Once the movie is out and I see .I'm
gonna start a web stie for POTA fanfiction . I wan't to write up
about a femal Orangutange named Theodosia who has very diffrent view
    points from her race .

Tell me do you think the new movie is too much? I mean too flashy
etc... I like what I've seen . I think people have to relise is that
if they really wan't the new generation to get in to POTA .They got
to do it in a style that they find atractive ,and hopheyly it's not
too much for the generation that grew up loving the characters .But
mabey this is a movie that can get diffrent generationgs to see it
    together .

Yes, it very much is like "Animal Farm" meets "Gulliver's Travels."  In fact,
I keep both those books alongside Boulle's book on my shelf.

And for anyone who thinks the ending PLANET was really original, here's a
poem from Shelley that's almost two hundred years old. . .

                                   OZYMANDIAS

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. . . Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on those lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
'My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains.  Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

If I were making the book, I would cast Tchéky Karyo As Ulysse Merou. He's
the French Major from The Patriot. I know I was thinking along the lines of
Christopher Lambert, which is better then Gerard Depardieu. But this new guy
is more of a tough guy version of Francois Truffaut and that fits my vision
of Ulysse more than either one of them. I'd start them in French but that
would transition into English kind of like Hunt for the Red October. Except
for the French version of course. That would be a must for the purists. And
    Ian Holm as Professor Antelle.
Any suggestions for Zira, Nova and the others?

A post directed me to Coming Attractions Message Form.

It seem that a 3rd Trailer will appear in Theatres June 22nd (This Friday)
But yet I see no official word on the Official Web Site as they did before
the 2nd Trailer not too long ago.

Any word on a third trailer this friday?

    Best,

Alex, do you think we should go see "Dr. Dolittle 2" this weekend?

Might be something interesting on just before it.  Think?

Ok, I have a view on this. I'm also a Star Wars fan even though I hate the
last two films, all the novels, and most of the comic books, but I still have
hope for the next two movies. I chat in Star Wars chat on AOL all the time
(since there is no sci-fi or Apes chat unless this group makes it) and all it
is is a bunch of kids most of the time that don't truly appreciate the
original and all they do is role play. They like Star Wars after seeing
Episode 1 and reading those terrible novels and that's it. It's really
depressing. I'm afraid that when the new POTA film comes out then Generation
X will only like it for that movie. If they wanted to get this generation to
enjoy Apes they should have re-released the originals in theaters. It will be
a sad day when there are Apes fans who don't know who Ursus, Zaius, Zira, and
    Cornelius are.

Yikes! I missed the chat. I hope there will be more. As a rule I don't
care for chatrooms, but I'd go to talk apes. We have the power of speech!
We can think! We can reason. As for the Next Generation Apes fans. I hope
the original film will become a midnight movie double feature with the late
night last showing of the new film. So these punk kids can have a chance to
see what started it all on the big screen!

Yeah, the chat was great last night! I recommend it to anyone with AOL and I
know there's a lot of people on here that have it. We've already talked about
doing it every Monday night around 7pm central time. Let us know for next
week mlccougar! I'm sure this message will show up on Yahoo sometime before
the new film comes out. (I hope!)
