"Ain't It Cool"'s viewpoint sounds kinda
weird. It sounds like he's worried the new film will be TOO good. Sounds like he
wants it to be good but not better than the originals. I say if I like the new
one better than the originals, more power to Burton. But that's not
likely.

There was some debate on this a couple of years ago here. What was the
final verdict? Was it in western Jersey? Also - where was the cave?
Somewhere along the Jersey coast? South of Sandy Hook?

Sammy Davis Jr. definitely. Natalie
Trundy told me Denzel Washington complimented it to her. Tom Hanks visited John
Chambers awhile back. Michael Keaton went to 30th Anniversary party. I know that
screenwriter David Koepp (the first 2 "Jurassic Park"s, "Spiderman" ) loves
it. Sally Struthers actually got Natalie's number and told her she was a
fan. I'm sure others will come out of the woodwork next month.

Ha! I couldn't read this without
hearing Donald Sutherland saying it. He played Mr. X in "JFK". There's nothing
in here that wasn't mentioned months ago. I have a feeling the filmmakers
"planted" that ending to throw people off the trail. I will say a friend of mine
visited the production ofice (Mr. E) and saw evidence of that ending. But they
didn't try to conceal it from him and he's a journalist so they may be trying to
play up that "ending". If that is the real ending it's not very good. Burton may
have something cool up his sleeve. I hope they even keep the ending out of the
novelization.

About 5 minutes before the big battle (which
almost but not quite ends the movie) Taylor sees a statue of Proteus (the Ape

Again he quotes reports from the
internet.
Yet he gives no qoutes from the film, and
gives no details outside of what's on the trailer and pics on the

I just hope 20th Century Fox takes

.htmlI went to an advance screening of "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back", the new
Kevin Smith movie that concludes his "New Jersey cycle" ("Clerks",
"Mallrats", "Chasing Amy", "Dogma"). I mentioned last January that I was
there when they filmed an "Apes" parody. The stuff I saw (a parody of "The
hunt" ) is butchered in the cut I saw, but there's other stuff (including a
parody of the famous ending) that also goes by too fast. The movie itself is
funny at times (there's a scene where the gang from "Scooby Doo" get stoned)
but not funny enough. It's a cross between "Up In Smoke" and "Pee Wee's Big
Adventure" (there's a big movie studio finale). On the set I'd asked Kevin
what he thought of "Planet of the Apes" and he said he "loved" it. At the
time the first teaser poster was out and he said he was impressed with it
and thought Burton might do well with the movie. Anyway, it's more publicity
for "Apes". I believe the movie comes out Aug.

I got the number for Fox at that
Shrine convention. I faxed the Special Events division and they called to say
they don't have a date for the premiere yet. They are still trying to figure out
everyone's schedule. Anyway, I think it would be a scandal if Arthur Jacob's
family is not invited and I know they'll have flights from L.A. to the premiere.
Natalie said she wants me to go so I'm going to work on Fox to spring for 4
tickets (for her 2 children, both in their mid-20's). I can't say for sure that
they won't invite her but they haven't been exactly graceful to her. No

I opened the Attar figure I got
today (was I supposed to do that?). I'd say they are the same quality as the
previous "classic Apes" figures from Hasbro a few years back. Not much
articulation, the sculpts don't hold up to much scrutiny, but the price is
right. Attar's stupid shoulder pads fall off if the arms are moved. There's no
stand but he's got holes in his feet so he would probably work on the stands
that came with the old figures. The Japanese will probably come out with better
figures. I'm interested in seeing the 12 " Attar, but I don't see the point in
the other 2 being humans. How about Thade in
12"?

Check out the new "Cinescape"
website. They have a heads up for the www.musicfromthemovies.com article
about Elfman's score. It says that " (the) huge brass section includes 12 French
horns, 12 trombones, 3 trumpets and 2 tubas. The 102-piece orchestra is joined
by a choir". Says the score "is thematic and makes use of both atonal,
minimalistic and modernistic stylistics", is "very dark", "unique and powerful".
The score (and the film) are undergoing a lot of last minute changes but there
should be about 75 minutes of music. Also of note is that the music for "Apes"'
prime competition, "Jurassic Park 3" will not be done by John Williams as were
the previous two, but by "The Matrix"'s Don Davis. The article also says a CD of
a Jerry Goldsmith concert is coming out.

Bryan,
Do you know for a fact that they are considering doing another set of classic
figures,or is it all just speculation (and wishful thinking)?I'm not trying
to be sarcastic by asking it that way....I myself would like it if they
did,so it'd be wishful thinking on my part too...But if you do have any idea
of if this is actually planned by Hasbro,I'll write them and call them
too, because I'd like to see another set of them.
But if they did another set,I'd say do a removable mask Mutant, another
Gorilla (this time in the proper colors),maybe Julius and not another soldier
(though a soldier was what I thought at first),probably another version of
Taylor (loin cloth or corn field rags),and another chimp, yeah probably
Caesar...Those choices are off the top of my head and could change depending
on the ideas of others,so these are not neccessarily my top picks.(Well
Julius and the removable mask Mutant are,the other 2 I could take or leave).
And Bryan, did you ever buy a tv series lunch box yet?I do have an extra (with
no thermos),so if you are interested in it,contact me privately and I'll
email you a description of the condition of it.(Off the top of my head,I'd
say its about a C-6,far from perfect, but not junk either).<.html

First off, Tom Weaver of "Starlog"
asked me to pick some pictures from Natalie Trundy's collection for their
interview with her. I sent that off and it should be a 5 pager in the next
issue.
A new issue of "Starlog" came out
that's not to be missed. "Apes" is on the cover and about half the issue is
about "Apes" (there's even some graffiti over the title dubbing the magazine
"Apelog"!). There's an interview with John Chambers, an interview with Rick
Baker, an article about how they choreographed the ape movements, and an article
about the new comic books.
There's also a magazine called
"Creative Screenwriting" with "Apes" on the cover that has an interview with
writer William Broyles Jr. who basically created the new movie, he's it's Pierre
Boulle. He's been rewritten but seems happy with the way the final script turned
out. He talks about how he was inspired by ancient Rome, how "Apes" compares
thematically to his previous scripts "Apollo 13" and "Cast Away" and basically
gives us a different perspective, since most magazines seem to have concentrated
on the makeup so far. There's even an article on the previous "Apes" scripts by
Adam Rifkin, Terry Hayes and Sam Hamm.

Forget about it. From what I
understand Fox is distancing the originals (even postponing the video game even
though it's ready). They want you to buy the new junk, Cougar, and you'd better
comply! Who do you think you are? Take another look, Ari is one nice piece of
ape.

Bryan,
Do you know for a fact
that they are considering doing another set of classic figures,or is it
all just speculation (and wishful thinking)?I'm not trying to be sarcastic
by asking it that way....I myself would like it if they did,so it'd be
wishful thinking on my part too...But if you do have any idea of if this
is actually planned by Hasbro,I'll write them and call them too, because
I'd like to see another set of them.
But if they did another set,I'd
say do a removable mask Mutant, another Gorilla (this time in the proper
colors),maybe Julius and not another soldier (though a soldier was what I
thought at first),probably another version of Taylor (loin cloth or corn
field rags),and another chimp, yeah probably Caesar...Those choices are off
the top of my head and could change depending on the ideas of others,so
these are not neccessarily my top picks.(Well Julius and the removable
mask Mutant are,the other 2 I could take or leave).
And Bryan,did you
ever buy a tv series lunch box yet?I do have an extra (with no thermos),so
if you are interested in it,contact me privately and I'll email you a
description of the condition of it.(Off the top of my head,I'd say its
about a C-6,far from perfect, but not junk either). Your use of

I opened mine as well, and yeah, I thought were a
little disppointing too. The resin statues that will be coming out soon
look interesting though.
BTW, is it my imagination, or does it seem like to
you guys too that just about every book or movie that revolves around a
primitive society, they almost always have characters named Attar or
Krull? Are those default names for script writers to use or
something?
I opened the Attar figure I got
today (was I supposed to do that?). I'd say they are the same quality as the
previous "classic Apes" figures from Hasbro a few years back. Not much
articulation, the sculpts don't hold up to much scrutiny, but the price is
right. Attar's stupid shoulder pads fall off if the arms are moved. There's no
stand but he's got holes in his feet so he would probably work on the stands
that came with the old figures. The Japanese will probably come out with
better figures. I'm interested in seeing the 12 " Attar, but I don't see the
point in the other 2 being humans. How about Thade in
12"?

"Krull" was the name of a bad movie (and Tim Burton loves bad movies). Most of
the names were created by William Broyles, the screenwriter. The one that bugs

I think it's flattering that so much of the original can be found in this
rivisit.
But I too beliveve that original names should have been left alone.
Let original names have their own place.

Of course there were a lot of
Zauises and Corneliuses and Galens in the originals and they weren't all the
same character. Broyles said he read the Boulle book (he dug the sail spaceship)
and saw the movies and said it is possible for this to take place in the
continuity of the originals. Alex, was the new Nova named that in the
script?

Not at all, If she is already know to Ari's family when visiting at supper
time as is in the trailer and script. No introductions would be needed. So no
names are given.
Perhaps she's named Nova, but the name would never be spoken in the
film.
As was with the Mutants in Beneath.

Was your post,
"F*** profanity! - - Jeff",
supposed to be some sort of ironic joke?"
If you were seriously offended, then I am sorry.
I clearly wrote,
"There's a small bit of profanity in the song, so if you are offended by
such, you may want to skip it".
I also added several lines of periods, so that it was neccessary to scroll
down to get to the lyrics. I did not want anyone to be offended.
If your post was supposed to be a joke, then please forgive this response.
If, however, this was your juvenile method of protesting my posting of
lyrics containing profanity, then I think you may want to consider returning
to finishing school to work on your communication skills.

I feel kind of bad about all of this because a long
while back a POTA fan e-mailed me and said that he was about to have a baby girl
and was thinking of calling her Nova. Well I asured him that the name would not
be used because it was already used in the original. Well, it now seems that his
baby girl will be named after a chimp!
I just hope they don't make fun of her in school,
which by the way was the reason he was soon caution about naming her that.
Relating her to Planet of the Apes. For he just liked the name
itself.
I think I have some hate mail coming!
Oh well, opps! Man, I feel bad!
Best,
Alex

Sorry for my little flake-out then. :)
I saw AI last night and got to see the POTA trailer.
The suspense is killing me. THAT was the movie I *wanted* to be
watching. Still, AI wasn't bad. I also saw the trailer for Harry
Potter. That looks like it is going to be incredible!

I saw AI last night and got to see the POTA
trailer. The suspense is killing me. THAT was the movie I *wanted* to
be watching. Still, AI wasn't bad. I also saw the trailer for
Harry Potter. That looks like it is going to be
incredible!
Lasher
Yeah I too saw A.I. yesterday. It wasn't
Steven's best, but it was okay.
I just hope he dosn't get any flack over
it. A lot of people were pissed off while leaving the theatre. At least those
who stayed until the end.
The rest walked out before it
ended.
It wasn't the best, but it was a creative
idea.
Best,
Alex

depresing to be a top hit (all the better for "Apes" to come out on top).
It'll be my first chance to see the new "Apes" on the big screen.

I was in Suncoast Video today .
There's a contest to win an ape warrior costume from Fox (estimated value:
$3,500; of course, their estimated value for the 2nd prize, a signed poster, is
$1 and we know how much those have increased). Anyway, it says you can join at
the official "Apes" website. "Apes" rules the
contests!
In a collectibles store I saw a
Kubrick ape for the new movie for $40. These were given out in Japan if you
preordered tickets to the movie. There's some on e-bay. Also, in the new Tomart
action figure mag there's two pictures of the new movie figures from Japan by
Jun Planing. They look really good but I'm still trying to catch up on the
Medicoms. Japan rules the
wallet!

Earlier today we were talking about the
names in the new movie. I just saw in SFX magazine a short interview with Cary
Gagahagada whatever his name is (he makes Schwarzenegger sound like Bob Jones).
He said Krull wasn't in the original script and that character was a Burton
creation. So maybe Burton DID name him after that "Krull" movie. Also Cary said
he knew the casting director and that's how he got an audience with
Burton.

I'm sure they are, Pepsi is an international product and so is the
Apes release. According to a Japanese seller on e-bay the first can has
appeared on the market shelves: ATTAR. And that's it, so there may be an
official release date coming soon.
I just can't get over how delayed they are on everything, and less
than 30 days left!!?
If this movie flops, the fault will be in part for Fox
hiring a bunch of babboons to run their advertising department. This is
really getting stupid.

Fox did this Pepsi promotion thing
with "Star Wars: Episode 1". The Japanese got the bottle toppers, we just got
the cans. Usually "Pepsi" includes it's restaurants like KFC, "Taco Bell" and
"Pizza Hut", but I know they don't have "Apes" tie-ins (Taco Bell is doing "Tomb
Raider", the silly gooses). Maybe this Pepsi promotion will only be in Japan (a
friend heard they shot a Japanese Pepsi commercial with some of the "Ape"
actors). It could be that once again Japan trumps the U.S. on
"Apes".

P.S.: I noticed Pepsi has a "Tomb Raider"
tie-in right now. I think we got screwed (but being screwed by Lara Croft ain't
half bad).

Yeah I did see that, perhaps they have to wait until the promo for
Tomb Raider is over before releasing the Apes. That would only make sence seeing
that both films were made by to different studios. (conflict in
interest)
So we'll still have to see, because while there is a promo with
Tomb Raider, there are no images at all on the cans.
Let's hope for the best as well as common promotional sence on
Fox's part.
Hell, Japan can keep the Tops, Let's just get this movie
advertised!

I just checked the estimates for the
box office on Internet Movie Database. They project "AI" will make $30 million
this weekend, "Fast and Furious" (the 1st sleeper of the year) with $20 m. for
$77 m. so far, "Dr. Dolittle 2" with $15m. for $51 m. so far (well, the first
Arthur Jacobs remake this summer didn't sink) and "Tomb Raider " is on it's last
legs (beautiful though they are) with $9 m. (will probably pass the $100 m. this
weekend. "Shrek" is still the one to beat, with an estimated $227 m. through
this weekend. Come on "Apes"!
With that, I'm off to see "A.I.". .

named Zira. So, if the guy gives you any flak tell him it's cool and
trendy!
I had a ex-girlfriend by the name of
Cira.
When my brother first heard her name he
thought it was Zira and couln't stop laughing. Until of course he understood it
was Cira.
I don't know, I see that hate mail coming
:o)

There was some debate on this a couple of years ago here. What was the

Somewhere along the Jersey coast? South of Sandy Hook?

From Coming Attractions Message
Forum:
I JUST caught it on Comedy Central during The Kids
in the Hall!!
IT WAS INCREDIBLE!! Easily better than the previous two trailers combined!!
There were new shots of Leo's pod spinning out in space, new lines, new shots
of the apes charging (on all 4s too!!) and TONS of other neat stuff! It was
pretty long to, I have nothing really to base it on, but it sure seemed to last
more than 30 seconds!!
The bad news is, I have one of the crappiest tvs in my room, and when I ran
up to turn the volume full blast, the video wire cut loose, and then the audio.
I had my nose against the sreen and my hand in the back screwin' around with all
the wires! I almost had a panic attack!!
Needless to say I don't have it on tape, and I technically haven't even
seen/heard the whole thing!!!
AHHHHHHHHH!!!
must... breath... must... breath...
It has begun!
Best,
Alex

Hi Luke,
Having worked with Rick Baker on film projects in the past and sharing
his love for apes (mine leaning heavily towards Planet of the Apes characters,
his leaning toward real life simians) I'd have to say I'd love to
have developed a Mandrill type character for the new film.
Back in 1990 when Adam Rifkin was involved with the first incarnation
of the Apes re-make idea, I did a handfull of designs based on Mandrills,
Baboons, and Gibbons. Really fun stuff.
As far as what planet I'd like to crash-land on? Is there a
Brittney Spears planet? How about a Claudia Schiffer Moon?
Ruth Buzzi asteroid?
Good luck with your article.

Humm...well in that case. I think it would
be wise not too pass on his request.
He could either be asking to obtain a good
answer, or he could be from FOX himself. Austraila is the home of the offical
website. Ever notice how the updates on the site are always done late
Friday nights on the east coast?
That's because it's early morning in
Australia. And how the chats are announced not only in American Time but also
Austarlian Time.
Never the less because of this development,
I think it would be best to turn down Luke's request to pass on his (school
project) dishonesty is not a cool thing.
For those living in America, Happy 4th of
July guys!
Great day for America, sad day for King and
Country.
No offence.

Good start, Crystal, though the photos are a bit dark on Explorer.
From experience, it's take a bit to get used to brightening them
enough for web-viewing without under or overdoing it. /Mez <.html

Back on the list after a long hiatus, and it's good to see the list is as
busy as ever. I was wondering, where is the chat room located? I'd like
to drop in one of these days. And does 7:30/8:30 mean that it starts at
7:30 PM Eastern time and last for an hour? Usually when talking about
different time zones the times are given in descending order (i.e 8:30
Eastern, 7:30 Central).
Everyone have a good Holiday!

I have to agree. I enjoy that fact
that it almost seems as if we do not exist. Just take comfort in
the fact that we're out there. I wonder what they'll think of us
after the new film is out. Will the old fans be overshadowed by
the new? Fine by me. Let them take all the flak. We'll
go back to being like the secret service.

Alex, was the new Nova named that in the script?
- - - - - Jeff K.
Not at all, If she is already know to Ari's family when visiting at
supper time as is in the trailer and script. No introductions would be needed.
So no names are given.
Perhaps she's named Nova, but the name would never be spoken in the
film.
As was with the Mutants in Beneath.
Best,
Alex
But wasn't that more due to the editing room than by original design?
During her Apes mailing list chat, I remember Natalie Trundy saying that while
filming they referred to each other by character names.

I wouldn't doubt it.

only get like two weeks off school around this time.
But aside from the geography lesson, I can't believe how naive this
