That sounds like it has the potential to be very cool then, it seemed
a bit cheesy the way it was presented in the trailer.
Now on to Ari; I *love* the make ups for the new apes, except Ari's.
Most of the apes look genuinely terrifying and realistic. Ari looks a
bit fake in the footage I've seen <.html

that others seem amazed by it. It's not exactly Fat Boy Slim, is it? I did

There are some
reviews of JPIII on the Ain't-it-cool-news website. They are very
mixed. Some are quite disappointed with it, saying the first two were
much better.
Well
it's as I thought. Just another chase and scream
flick.
At
least Apes will have some food for thought as well as chase and srceam!

Three weeks ago there were re-shoots done in London. From what I've read
today the CGI work is still being done.
This is not good news, folks!

I'm not sure, but has "Tomb Raider" flopped? I think "A.I." is a flop, also
this "Final Fantasy" thing.

My parents saw all thouges movies .They couldn't handel A.I.Sad it
was way too depresing .They liked the special effects in Final
Fantasy and Tomb Raider though .But that the plot isn't all that
great in either movies .
That is my biggest fear for POTA . That the effects and everything
is good .But the plot isn't . <.html

Okay, here's a first review of the film. It looks as if this isn't going to
be as I feared -- I hope anyway! I talked to Joe Russo last night about his
book, and he's very excited to see the new film. He'll be going to the
premiere Monday night. He's also going to be doing a book signing with Kim
Hunter on August 7th at the Barnes and Noble in Astor Place, N.Y. His book
comes out on August 1st, by the way.

I wouldn't worry too much. A trailer featuring narration is no indication at
all that the actual film will. I would doubt it, in fact. Though narration
can certainly be good (Mad Max 2, Stand By Me).

E.T. had a very short thing about the Ape School and how the actors learned
to move like apes. Access had a longer segment on the makeup and showed
speeded-up footage of the make-up being applied. They also said that next
week's TV Guide will have four different covers featuring characters from the
new film.
After what I read on the Ain't-it-cool-news website today, and now seeing how
cool the new make-up is, I'm really getting psyched for this film.

...and forgive me if this was mentioned too, but there's stuff in trailers all the time that doesn't show up when released i.e. narration, music, scenes. I'll only be pissed if they edit Linda Harrison out in the final cut. :)
I'm a bigger fan of letting, well, the story tell the story. I'll let Tim off the hook if it's something a la John Huston in Battle. An homage yes, copying it no. And I hope it's not Fox pulling the strings on that kind of thing for more box office or anticipated test audience BS.
Where it can be bad: I felt 'Bladerunner' worked better without the studio-mandated narration that WB (I think) insisted on. Give Ridley Scott props for his Director's Cut. Maybe there's a parallel too since both films are very stylized, imprinted with their director's vision...
I'm down with pre-release hype though. I need to try to keep notions and expectations minimal now and just show up July 27 like I should. THEN we'll talk...but I'm just ranting...

.htmlSo I'm poking around Borders Books and Music this past Saturday while
waiting to meet up with a friend and heads down to the blues festival,
and what do I see on the shelf but the POTA book by David Hofstede. I was
kind of surprised they only had that and a soft cover version of Green's
book considering the movie was only a couple of weeks away, but anyway...
Truth be told, I wasn't too impressed with what I saw. Most of the
content was a simplified rehash of what any POTA knows backwards and
forwards, albeit with some GLOWING errors. The Sci Fi Channel first aired
the POTA television series in 1980? Gregory Sierra played a gorilla
Sergeant in BENEATH? Inaccurate quotes from the films, misquoting the ad
campaign for ESCAPE... the list goes on, and I won't even mention how bad
the timeline is.
Then there's the fact that the guy obviously doesn't like BENEATH. For
the other films, most of the movie review quotes he chose were fairly
positive. For BENEATH (and BATTLE, come to think of it), he chose mostly
negative ones, and even the positive ones still had something bad to say
about the film. I always thought books like this were supposed to be a
little more...objective.
I hope Russo's book is somewhat better. Does anyone know anything about
this 'POTA Chronicles' by Paul A. Woods? Go to amazon.com and enter POTA
in the search engine, then look under book results if you don't know what
I'm talking about.

The Blade Runner narration was kinda Mickey Spielain -- or Raymand Chandler,
but worked okay for a sci-fi detective story. I did think the director's cut
was better. But only because I knew all the info in the narration already.
I think if Ari has a brief intro or outro ala Road Warrior that'll work. It
too bad Bruton doesn't believe in director's cuts. Then maybe he could
finish it right. After being rushed by the studio like this, I wonder if he
still believes you do what you can with what the studio give you, and that's
your final cut. I hope when it goes to DVD all the endings will be in the

Hi Loc.
Well I wouldn't say that. I think the idea
from the apes music video came from the same idea when they made the music video

Hey Gang,
I just saw one of the new posters on a bus stop here, IT'S AWESOME!!!
It looks like a milk ad, black and white, with a figure standing in
the middle with the slogan "CLASSIC REVISTED" across the front. The
figure is a gorilla warrior with a huge sword in that classic Frank Frazetta
CONAN pose. VERY VERY COOL!!!!
Just thought I'd share my excitement!!!

What do you know about the Adam
Rifkin "Apes". I assumed at that stage they were planning a lower budget affair,
since Rifkin was an untried director and his script basically picked up from the
first movie (Taylor, Cornelius, etc.). I figured they would have just kept the
original makeup and costumes.

Hi Luke,
Having worked with Rick Baker on film projects in the past and sharing
his love for apes (mine leaning heavily towards Planet of the Apes characters,
his leaning toward real life simians) I'd have to say I'd love to have
developed a Mandrill type character for the new film.
Back in 1990 when Adam Rifkin was involved with the first incarnation of
the Apes re-make idea, I did a handfull of designs based on Mandrills,
Baboons, and Gibbons. Really fun stuff.
As far as what planet I'd like to crash-land on? Is there a
Brittney Spears planet? How about a Claudia Schiffer Moon? Ruth
Buzzi asteroid?
Good luck with your article.

Not at all, If she is already know to Ari's family when visiting at
supper time as is in the trailer and script. No introductions would be
needed. So no names are given.
Perhaps she's named Nova, but the name would never be spoken in the
film.
As was with the Mutants in Beneath.

But wasn't that more due to the editing room than by original design?
During her Apes mailing list chat, I remember Natalie Trundy saying that
while filming they referred to each other by character names.

I was a designer at Tony Gardner's now defunct ALTERIAN studios back
the. We were working on "Mom & Dad Save the World" when the Rifkin
ape script came through the lab. We did a handfull of maquettes and
illustrations. I'd say the designs were somewhere between the originals
and the Stan Winston designs that came later. The three designs I
did were of a Baboon, Mandrill, and a Gibbon. I think the Rifkin
scripts pop up on eBay from time to time, though I haven't seen one in
a while, and no, I do not have one in my possession. Darn.
It was a cool concept tho, 30 years since the first film (with no
acknowledgement that any of the sequels ever happened). Taylor and
Cornelius' sons have grown to adulthood and try to uncover a conspiracy
(ala Oliver Stone) of who's killing off all the high council members of
Ape City. I never got all the way through the script myself, but
it was pretty good from what I remember of the "buzz".

Got done checking out Alex's

hope the army chattering like that doesn't get laughs. Not the best scene (I
hope!) to advertise the movie.
The relationship between Wahlberg
and the boy reminds me of a similar one in "Sleepy Hollow". It's a new thing for
Burton. Usually his characters are loners, now they adopt orphans. Perhaps
that's because Burton has said he's thinking of being a
father.

Thanks Brian. Sounds like Fox
was serious. I thought Rifkin's project was "pre-serious". How did
it feel to design stuff for a new "Planet of the
Apes"?
The only thing I didn't like
about your post is you reminded me of "Mom and Dad Save the
World".

I was a designer at Tony Gardner's now defunct
ALTERIAN studios back the. We were working on "Mom & Dad
Save the World" when the Rifkin ape script came through the
lab. We did a handfull of maquettes and illustrations. I'd
say the designs were somewhere between the originals and the Stan
Winston designs that came later. The three designs I did were of a
Baboon, Mandrill, and a Gibbon. I think the Rifkin scripts pop up
on eBay from time to time, though I haven't seen one in a while, and no,
I do not have one in my possession. Darn.
It was a cool concept tho, 30 years since the first film (with no
acknowledgement that any of the sequels ever happened). Taylor and
Cornelius' sons have grown to adulthood and try to uncover a conspiracy
(ala Oliver Stone) of who's killing off all the high council members of
Ape City. I never got all the way through the script myself, but
it was pretty good from what I remember of the
"buzz".

a lower budget affair, since Rifkin was an untried director and his
script basically picked up from the first movie (Taylor, Cornelius,

costumes.

Having worked with Rick Baker on film projects in the past
and sharing his love for apes (mine leaning heavily towards
Planet of the Apes characters, his leaning toward real life
simians) I'd have to say I'd love to have developed a
Mandrill type character for the new film.
Back in 1990 when Adam Rifkin was involved with the first
incarnation of the Apes re-make idea, I did a handfull of
designs based on Mandrills, Baboons, and Gibbons. Really
fun stuff.
As far as what planet I'd like to crash-land on? Is
there a Brittney Spears planet? How about a Claudia
Schiffer Moon? Ruth Buzzi asteroid?
Good luck with your article.

1. Creatively and wittily describe what you'd
personally regard as the best / coolest Ape costume and
character you'd create for a new Planet of the Apes film
if (hypothetically speaking) you were in Rick Baker's
position.
2. Which planet would you most like to

problem if you want it to be Earth in an alternate sci

Yeah, I thought the same when I first heard that.
But it's nothing new, the same ape sounds can be heard in

Perhaps Burton got the idea from there.

"Conquest" works because it's a

OK, well, it worked because their

because there's legit action in "Conquest". In the new one the action seems to

Well I agree, it does seem a bit wierd in this scene. And it seems
to work better in Conquest. But on the other hand if this were a clip of
Conquest without seeing the whole movie, perhaps we would be saying the same
thing. So we'll just have to wait and see to have a better out look on
it.

.html
Posted on Coming Attractions Message Forum.
I saw it also. I give it an 11 out of 10. This movie was absolutely
brilliant. Tim Burton went in a different direction with this film than his
others.
The Ape Culture was enormous, the religion, way of life, etc was just
astonishing. Elfman did an excellent job with the music, in fact, its my
favorite from any score I have ever heard.
The storyline was amazing, there was nothing wrong with it the least bit.
The apes were UNBELIEVABLE. They are as real as it gets, if they were any
more real they would have to use real ones
Every actor, including Marky, was AWESOME. Burton new exactly what he was
doing when he cast them.
I don't know where to begin on the make-up, Baker is a genius, omg, you have
to see this movie, I can't even explain how awesome the make-up was.
Ape City was one of my favorite parts of the film... its enormous, so
visually stunning I wonder how they did it; i personally think its more stunning
than Star Wars.
The ending was THE BEST ENDING out of any movie I have ever scene besides the
original. You will have to see this to believe also, I wanna tell you guys so
much what it is but I'm not.
This movie really has no bad points at all.
I AM SO PICKY when it comes to movies, but this one was unbelievable...I had
doubts b4 I saw the screening, but those doubts were taken away 100% when I saw
it. Very Necessary.
If graded, it would get 110%.
No matter howhigh your expectations are, they will be met.
Hoping for the Best,
Al

A little snippet that appeared on FSM's website about the score:
"The recent reports about Danny Elfman being asked to rewrite portions of
his Planet of the Apes score "more heroically" ("like Gladiator") are an
exaggeration...Jeff Bond has interviewed the composer for an upcoming FSM,
and Elfman relates that although he did some rescoring, it was par for the

score's approach.
"Look for Elfman and remix artist Paul Oakenfold to appear on MTV's "Making

Apes" item. But it shows how hot sellers think that name is right now.

to pass as an Apes item.....
Man, I know I did some
"yelling" as to what I think is 'real' Apes and what isn't...But I will
say, this has to be one of THE BIGGEST misuses of the Apes name I have
ever seen. If this is an Apes item, then I really know that the
Apes name is on the way to hell in a handbasket.
Check this thing
out and see if you don't agree with me. I'm sure even those that disagreed
with me in the past will have to say I'm right in this case. This item
should "hang for high treason": eBay
item 1169648881 (Ends Jul-28-01 16:30:45 PDT ) - Pink Panther "PLANET OF
THE APES" Prod CEL
I just hope they know they aren't going to fool
anyone by saying this is Apes. If they do,then there really are some very
gullible people out there. Your use of Yahoo! Groups is subject

P.S. : Both the "Pink Panther" and
"Apes" cartoons were produced by
DePatie-Freleng.

.html Well, my friends at Fox remember me AND my obsession and have invited me
to their staff screening on Wednesday night. I promise no spoilers and
will refrain from voicing my opinion until others in the group have seen
it. One thing I will tell you though.....the suspense is killing me!!
Best,

OooBoy. They're packed away in boxes from 11 years ago.
I'll have to dig them out for everyone after the nuttiness of the coming
week subsides.

Do you have your designs online? I'm a (curious) illustrator who
enjoys drawing the pota characters and I'd love to see any other
artist's renditions online. Any links would be great.
Well I'm assuming your designs are illustrations. If I'm totally off
track here it's because I just joined this list. ;)
Thanks,
