OooBoy.  They're packed away in boxes from 11 years ago.  I'll have to dig them out for everyone after the nuttiness of the coming week subsides.

Do you have your designs online? I'm a (curious) illustrator who
enjoys drawing the pota characters and I'd love to see any other
artist's renditions online. Any links would be great.

Well I'm assuming your designs are illustrations. If I'm totally off
track here it's because I just joined this list. ;)

Thanks,

Interesting interview with Wahlberg in Sunday's "L.A. Times". Says he's
buying his first house and planning to have his divorced parents live with
him. Says "Apes" is his first film that made him nervous because it's a
fantasy story. Big, big fan of Steve McQueen. Has a tatoo of rosary beads
around his neck to remind him to be good.

Movie headlines.net has a review from a dude who infiltrated an exhibitor screening of "Apes" and has some good things to say about it. Despite all the reports of delays, it looks like they got the damn thing done.                               - - - - Jeff K.

Saying that there is a delay only creates greater hype for a movie just before release.
But that's just between you and me :o)

Those reviews were a little suspect to me. Even if they're gospel they don't seem to be the people whose opinions I'd share. But I always expected lapses in logic coming from Tim Burton. And if the ending is what they say I will probably be disappointed (but I'm definitely not going to wait for the video!). They both said Ari was the best and one said Tim Roth wasn't good, the opposite of general opinion. And they didn't like the trailer, which I thought was pretty good. We'll all know soon enough.

Joe Russo said his co-author Larry Landsman already saw it. I'll find out what he thought.

Sorry Brian, I got Rebok Add the first time.
That was just a delayed post.

I also have that image on my site at:

Also I'll be posting that broadcast time of yours on the site to let everyone know. But just in case they don't show it here on the east coast, send me a copy of it and I'll convert it to Real Player for the site.
In return I'll send you everybraodcast made on the NEW POTA, this will be a double VHS Tape because the coverage I have will be about 3 to 4 hours long.

Now you know why I'm so burned out right now, that plus the site has really been kicking my ass lately. :o)

By the way, I haven't been receiving anything from Yahoo for days, so
when Mlccougar tolds me he hasn't either I decided to check the

I just saw a repeat of that MTV POTA special (it'll be on again
tonight) and it really looks cool this new movie. I think this will
be THE big hit film of the summer. Everyone's going to dig it.

I also saw in the latest "In Style" magazine the Reebok 'Evolved
      Classic' gorilla ad. Pretty cool.

AND I saw JP3 this weekend. Not bad. I liked it better than the
first two, but now it's onwards and apewards to next weekend.

Everybody remember to watch E! News Daily everyday this week and
don't forget about the HBO First Look special Monday night, of the
      Fox POTA special Wednesday night.

      Bye!

        July 30 - Heston
        July 31 - Burton
        Aug. 1 - Kris Kristofferson
Aug. 2 - Helena Bonham Carter
        Aug. 3 - Roddy

Interesting... no offense to her, but Carter is an odd choice. Maybe Wahlberg because of his colorful past. I wish they were showing the Sal Mineo one.

The subversive genius behind Beetlejuice, Batman, and The Nightmare Before Christmas has left his mark on Shockwave.com.

One of the greatest living American storytellers in any medium, Tim Burton has crafted a rich world of Good versus Evil, featuring a well-intentioned but ill-equipped superhero -- Stainboy. He can't fly around tall buildings or outrun a speeding train. The only talent he seems to have is to leave a nasty stain. Yet, somehow, it all works out in the end.

Visit Stainboy's world now at Shockwave.com. You can download sound clips from Stainboy episodes. Go behind the scenes to learn how Burton brought his trademark visual innovation to the Web. And build the freakiest robot this side of a junkyard.

Hey everybody, the Sunday Papers were very thin on POTA here in NY.
Sunday Newsday had Wahlberg on the cover of the entertainment section,
FanFare. Good spread on the new flick, a 2nd article on Wahlberg, and a nice
side bar titled The Simian Saga. Has that shot of Nova & Taylor on the
platform at the dig. Also that one of Thade choking Leo. Absolutely nothing
in the Daily News. Something about Wahlberg partying in the gossip section.
And zilch in the Times, other than the ad. It'll be at the Ziegfeld in NYC.
That's where I'm seeing it. Also got the latest Maxim w/HBC on the cover.
Nice spread. Also the Talk magazine w/Estella on the cover. Hope all is well
with everybody. To those of you in the chat room on the 18th, sorry, but I
had forgotten about it, and I was headin' out the door. Never been in a chat
room before. Anyhow, we're mere days away, Have Fun, Go Apes, John P.S.,
I should get the Thade shirt any day now.

The first listen didn't do much for me. There's no recognisable theme like his score for "Batman" (which I thought was one of the best things about that movie). But the commentary says to "dig deeper" so we'll see what a few listens does. Reminds me too much of "Mad Max".                              - - - - Jeff K.

According to movieheadlines.net, the press kit for "Apes" says there's footage from "The Simpsons" in it (as well as "The Day the Earth Stood Still", "Grapes of Wrath", and "The Robe"). "Simpsons" is very good about including "Apes" references so that sounds fair.

Also, the exhibitors who saw the film last week seem to like what they see . According to today's "Hollywood Reporter", there has never been 3 $200 million earners in a summer. So far, "Shrek" and "Mummy Returns" have crossed it and "Pearl Harbor" is close ($192 m.). Will "Apes" make it 4?

According to word from the weekend's Comic Con in San Diego, the "Star Wars 2" trailer is still months away. That means it won't play with "Apes". Fine, "Star Wars" has stole the spotlight from "Apes" enough already in it's history!

Well, if that's the ending it's not a very good one, depending on how it's presented. I'm hoping Burton and Co. will switch endings on opening day, since they knew it would leak from the exhibitors' screenings. That's what I would do. But I'm not sure if it's possible.

I only downloaded the main title snippet (that's as much of a spoiler as I
allowed myself). I liked it. From the one piece that I downloaded I'd say it
struck me as Lifeforce meets Batman, chopped together with Goldsmith's
"Congo" and "The Ghost & The Darkness".

The Face has several pages of coverage of the new Apes, but also covers
classic PotA too. It even has a classic PotA cover (Ape-o-naut, though it

Thanks Alex for the link for a little preview of Elfman's score. I
collect film scores on CD so I've been as eagerly awaiting this as
the movie itself. (I won't say what I think of the music until I see
the movie.) I think the CD is due to hit stores tomorrow, so after
work Tuesday I'll be going on a "hunt" myself.

The reporter was Toni Senecal (very Novaesque BTW, complete with leather

clips from the film (I averted my eyes) Then stuff from the junket. Wahlberg
says it's the hardest part of doing the film. Same with Roth. Burton goofed
on it too. Then it ended with the reporter talking from the floor of the post

Apes is all over the cover of TV guide.
It's one of those issues with four or five different covers each featuring a
different star. From what I can see this movie may be so much of an 'omage
to the original film that it may detract from the story rather than adding to

The POTA special on Fox is going to be on Wednesday at 7pm central time. It
will be on your basic Fox station that shows Simpsons, X-Files, and Malcolm
in the Middle. Check your local TV Guide for the time in your area. Now, can
someone tell me when the HBO special comes on again? It was not listed in my
tv guide so I have no idea when it was on.

Perhaps it's premature to think about the "Apes" sequel (but I'm immature
so that's not such a leap) but I hear Fox would like it for 2003 if it's a
go. The average used to be 3 years between big sequels but Fox has
instituted a two year gap starting with "X-Men" to better keep up momentum.
Anyway, the cool thing is that 2003 is the 40th anniversary of the "Apes"
concept (specifically Boulle's book), the 35th anniversary of the original
movie and the 30th anniversary of Arthur Jacobs' death. I remember fans
groused in 1998 when Fox didn't deliver an "Apes" film for the 30th
anniversary. Here's their chance to make amends, provided the current film
doesn't rot and lie stinking in the ground.

Hmmm, sounds intriguing. Something I've noticed with Tim Burton is that
there's insn't a whole lopt of guess work involved (not much building of
suspense) in the scripts (his fault/who's fault??? who knows.)
Sleepy Hollow pretty much told us outright who the headless horseman was
(hey, we didn't ALL read the book =)). So the rest of the movie was simply a
matter of hanging around to see the middle and ending.
Far more effective I think had the identity been kept hidden until near the
end. Was it necessary to see Walken's made-up face? for me, no. It was far
more eeerie to see the horeman sans head than for us to know all about the
      guy right near the beginning.
It reminded me of those Columbo movies. I liked Columbo (and Sleepy Hollow
actually), except we were always shown clearly who the murderer was right at
the beginning. It was fun to see how Columbo fingures it out, but sometimes
I want the suspense of not knowing.
Agatha Christie pulled off the who-done-it more skillfully IMHO.

      Ah well...no matter.. =)

The Japanese are also going ga ga over "Pearl Harbor", and they pay steep ticket prices. But they are a nation of "Ape" lovers. At least this summer has been a disapointment (get the message, Hollywood?) so even if "Apes" doesn't do that good it won't look too bad.

Yeah, I was just thinking that myself. The Japanese love everything! :o)
      Oh shit we're in trouble!
      hehehe!!!

I'm sure it's good though, if it's one thing I like most about Planet of the Apes, that's the concept itself. So I know regardless I'll love it.
At least with Planet of the Apes you know that Apes are real, and not made up creatures like so many Sci-Fi flicks.

As for the Jar Jar Binks poster, if it's signed by Jar Jar himself, it's a keeper buddy!

      YEAH! :o)

Has anybody else got the Elfman CD?   You get a Topps card with it.  I've
only had time to listen to the first three tracks in my car as I drove home.
In the main title I could hear a little homage to the Goldsmith score, but
from what I've heard so far this is nowhere near as brilliant as the original
score.  However, I'm beginning to adapt the attitude that comparing the new
movie to the old is like comparing apples to bananas, or man to apes (You get
      the idea.).

I also saw some of the premiere on E.T. and Access Hollywood.  I haven't
looked at E! News Daily yet.  (I wonder if Alex has this all up on his site

According to an interview on movieheadlines.net, Wahlberg says he will only do the sequel if Burton directs. From what I understood, he's contractually committed to a sequel. Does this mean Burton's a shoo-in to direct? Burton hates sequels and made an anti-sequel with "Batman Returns". I also read yesterday that the whole cast has signed for the sequel. Based on what I know about the movie, how are they going to bring some of the characters back?

Sometimes it looks like a $100 Million  movie and sometimes it looks like a sound stage. Fans of the Boulle's novel should be pleased that some of his concepts were used. It certainly is a popcorn movie, expect nothing more and you will not be disappointed. This is not "Simian Kane"

      (2) From what Ken has said, this movie will not be too cerebrally challenging.  It will be entertaining and that suits me.  It will have all the same social comments (comparing to slavery etc) and a "shock" ending.  My guess is that it will not be a shock at all for those who have read the book and seen the movie.  I hope you can all just appreciate the Classic for what it is and hopefully one day someone in the group will have $20mil to throw away on a better movie that none of the general public will pay to see or understand (but all of us die - hard fans will be happy).

      (3) I'll be back after I see the movie.  Best wishesuntil then.

Yep, I've found a couple of the posts from the last day or so are already

I've read some of these reviews, and most not completely.  I kept wondering
while reading, "who is it that's writing these things?"    I would guess it's
mostly guys in their early twenties, and all I have to say about that is
"What do they know?"   BUT more importantly -- "What do they expect?"

I'm 42 and PLANET OF THE APES has been my favorite film for over thirty-three
years, and I don't expect this new film to be great, but I also don't expect
it to be awful.  I KNOW it isn't going to replace the original.  It will be
pretty much what's to be expected from today's FOX, and what that is I don't
feel like saying right now -- I'm still in the "wait and see" mode.

      "And so we wait... "

I liked it more than "The Mummy Returns" and "Final Fantasy" put together,

should be pleased that some of his concepts were used. It certainly is a
popcorn movie, expect nothing more and you will not be disappointed. This

That's about what I expect, but "damn it all to hell!!!!!"  too bad we
couldn't get "Simian Kane."   Too many things have to be compromised, or
dumbed-down, in order to do what the 'suits' think will get the biggest

I was thinking today, after I see this film I will want to write about it in
the group, and I can do that without spoiling anything, but if I have really
negative things to say even THAT may ruin it for others.   So, I don't know
what I'm going to do.  Probably be just vague at first, I guess, then in a
week or two really let loose.

Oh, I saw a clip from the film last night on the Tonight Show.  It was a
scene where Thade flips out after learning the humans have escaped on horses.
Anyway, watching it I thought maybe this movie should be called "Voyage to
the Planet of the Flying Monkeys from the Wizard of Oz."    Anyway, that's
cool -- "The Wizard of Oz" is also one of my favorite movies.

Well that's not really a problem with me. I mean that was seen in the trailers.
What I'm not too keen on is the chattering apes. I thought it was okay in the battle scene, but to hear Thade chattering himself was like...Uh?
Then the chimp soldier do the same was like...Uh?

So if those chatters were replaced by roars, then YES! Awesome!

But on the other hand no negative reviews pointed that out so it may not be as bad when you see it in the full lengh film. In other words, expected. So again, we'll have to see. Good or Bad, it will be good to see the concept of apes Rule the Planet again. So I'm really looking foward to it.

      Best,

P.S. Seeing how the world has been viewing this e-group over the last few weeks, I wouldn't be surprised to see an upcoming negative review highlighting "chattering apes". :o)

Why bother to bring back the entire cast in new roles? Hire new actors and
      save some bucks.

My local "Toys 'R Us still has the Hasbro "Classic Apes" figures from '99,
but they've bumped up the price from $7.99 to $10.99 to match those from the
      new movie!

I'm going to post what I think will happen and just send it to myself just to
get a date stamp before release. If I'm right, I'll post it after our Brit
friends have seen it. As far as the ape chatter, yeah I think they are too
apey sometimes, especially since Helena and Lisa Marie don't look all that
apelike. Though I don't think I'll hate the movie, I prefer my apes evolved.
However I have seen some very Neanderthal humans, particularly in the South.
I suppose some of us have a longer climb up the evolutionary ladder than
      others.

      Hey gang,

I've just found this site and they say they're going to have a live chat with
Peter Staddon from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

IF we can get on this might be a good time for APES fans to tell this guy
just what we want to see on DVD.

      I'll try to be there.

According to movieheadlines.com, Richard Zanuck told Kim Hunter at the premiere, "If we ever make another you'll be in it". That's not to say she'd do it. Kim has been outspoken about the folly of new "Apes"  and she's never dwelled on the originals (no website, no conventions). She is doing that signing though, so maybe she's softening (though it sounds like the signing and going to the premiere was specifically to help the book "Planet of the Apes Revisited"). We'll see.

Yeah, Brian! I saw you on the tube. The only one without makeup on.
Unfortunately, they referred to the original as a "kitsch classic" and gave
away the ending. These newspeople are all the same. But "Apemania" is one
      of a kind.

I haven't called Joe Russo to see how the premiere went and what he thinks of
the new movie.  Since he's also doing the Jersey Convention this weekend, I
think I'll wait until Sunday night and get the ape poop on that, too.

Joe didn't get to go to the premiere. Co-author Larry Landseman went with Kim. They only gave Kim 2 tickets??? I guess that was so Bryant Gumbel could go.

Joe said the movie had some interesting stuff but is forgettable and no match for the original. Told you Zanuck!

FX special is on tonight. Is E!'s "Behind the Scenes" about "Apes" this week?

Yeah, Joe told me about the two ticket thing.  And I figured that would be
his reaction to the new movie -- it'll probably be mine, too.

The E! POTA Special is tomorrow at 7:30, but what looks like a better program
is the Sci-Fi Channel's POTA special at 7 PM (These are Eastern time, three
hours earlier in CA, I guess)
