<<The only down side: Ari's makeup should have been made more realistic. And doing so, the part could still have been pulled off. (done very well)>>

I have to agree. I thought the whole idea behind giving her eyebrows to pretty her up was so Wahlberg's character would be attracted to her. Seems to me the only reason he gave her the time of day was to get out of town. But Lisa Marie's Nova character's makeup was even worse. She looked very unapelike. And she wasn't with the orangatan senator as a comment on mixed ape couples. They just didn't bother to do any other females. Pretty slipshod of Burton. But he's taking enough of a shalacking in the press and he knows it.

The one thing that I didn't really get . Now was Walberg ( Leo ) in

of the past of that future ? Are is the future part of there past ?
I'm very confused with that part .

Yeah I'm happy Rory. But I'm more happy for all ape fans around the world.

A lot has been said about the originals being rated G (with the exception of
the PG rated "Conquest"). While I would say "Escape" and "Battle" DO fit into
the G-rated catagory, I'd say the others don't. I mean look, the first has
violence,death,nudity, and "swearing". "Beneath" also has violence, I mean
look, they show Brent getting blown away for one thing (even shot in the
head), and I'm sure the Mutants removing their masks must have totally
freaked some kids out. And of course, "Conquest" has bloodshed all over
during the revolt, to name a thing or two...

What I'm getting at is this, yes, they were rated G, but if they were made
now, I'd bet they'd be at least be PG-13. I mean the movie rating standards
have changed quite a bit since they were made. Now most kids wouldn't even
bother seeing a G rated movie, it'd be "too childish". Back when they were
made, there were still "not rated" films being released to the public,(cheap
drive in films as an example). So you have to take into consider the
"standards" of the time when they were released. If they were made now, I'd
bet they'd have quite a different rating.

(If I remember correctly, when I seen the British release of the movie box
set on eBay,I think they had them rated as PG movies on their current video
release. And I know when the Disney channel aired the "movies" made from the
tv series, they rated them as TV-PG. So even though they weren't for
theatrical release now, there are some that rated them a little closer to
what I think they'd be rated if they were current films.)

What do you mean? Seems like most posts, including teh ones where

post these warnings of delayed posts before your delayed posts, or

First, I just want to say that I am new here, but as all of you are, I am a
huge "POTA" fan.

this is what i am responding to:
The reviews were very positive great characters great eye candy that means a
sequal! I have not read one bad review usa today gave it high praise! this
means a good turn out and more apes merchandise! Everyone check your local
papers and let us know what the reviews are in your neck of the woods
~~~~~~`
Okay, I have read many bad reviews on the new MONKEY.....oh wait,,I do not
want to offend the apes....I mean APE film.  I cannot blame the media on
this.  This film has gone through so many changes since it started.  It was a
Cameron film.  It was an Oliver Stone film.  Even Arnold Schwarzeneger was
going to play Taylor at one time.  The Promotions and marketing for this film
have been outstanding.  It is no wonder that this is a highly anticpated
film.  The studios were worried, so they pushed the production up the film.
It was not going to be released until Christmas, but I guess film executives
smelled blood of bad box office hits.  This changed had Burton and staff in
the studio fixing things up to this past Monday..This is no joke.
Anyway, like other films with such high anticipation, it comes with a huge
price tag.  Critics are going to over analyze this film.   USA Today is the
only positive review that I have seen.  Ebert talked of how the plot holes
and the dead acting between relationships drove this from a four star rating.
The Miami Herald said it was less then stellar. (by the way check all reviews
on CHECKTHEGRID.com)
I think that it will make lots of money, but I was sad that Burton was not
more Burton-like and Walhberg did not show more expression.  I would have
also liked more emphasis on the emotions by the humans.  I mean where is the
LOve and Compassion?
Anyway, saying all that, I still loved this film.  It had some good twists,
and the score was interesting.  I still prefer the Jerry Goldsmith original,
but you should not compare the two films.  The apes looked terrific, and APE
city is fun.
I will see it again, but if this does not make over 200 million, we will see
no sequal, so I want it to kill at the box office
this is ol'blue eyes saying
thanks
It might be the summers blockbuster and it was an entertaining movie
but no way is it better than the original for a lot of reasons. I
won't say why as I don't want to spoil it for those who have not seen
it.
"BETTER than the original" ------- NOT!
Got to see POTA today.  AWESOME!  You might be
surprised to find this out, but I have never once seen
the original POTA or any of its sequels.  It was a
great feeling to go into this so fresh and unknowing
of anything.  (Though I can understand that you might
be appalled by the fact that I've never seen them!)
Now, I can't wait to see the Heston ones!
I'll have more time to talk about it later.  Thanks
The Queensland Sunday Mail newspaper featured an article on one of the
biggest Aussie POTA collector / fans.
' Dean Freeze has gone ape,struck by POTA fever. Symptons include
collecting anything and everything to do with the 60's cult
film,memorising passages from the script and claiming it's the " best
movie of all time".
Despite not even being born in 1968,Mr. Freeze lives,sleeps and
breathes the sci-fi classic. Visitors to his Gold Coast home are hard
pressed to find a seat among his 300 ape memorabilia items. Key
rings,bottle tops,comics,t shirts ; if it has an apes theme,you can
bet he has it. "I first saw the original when I was 15 and was
hooked. Something about it really affected me,the whole human / ape
role reversal on this new planet was revolutionary at the time. It's
more than just a sci-fi film,it had morals and was very well written".
It has taken him 5 years to collect $20 000 worth of memorabilia
through the net and in second hand stores. The new POTA film opens
next week and Mr. Freeze "isn't quite sure what to expect.
Hopefully,it will be as good as the original". '
Hey guys! I had a chat going on AOL last night and for the first time since
I've ever made a POTA chat we had like 8 or 9 people in there all night! It
was great! The film has generated new interest in the films for sure! But
over and over all night people were asking what the ending meant. My first
take on it while seeing was that it was a wonderful ending since it was so
close to the ending in the novel. The novel never explains why there is a
gorilla soldier there in Paris. I was even half expecting something like that
to happen at the end of the movie. Mark's face when he looked at the Thade
memorial statue was classic and just like the face Heston wore when he looked
at the Statue of Liberty. But the question that kept coming up in the POTA
chat last night was "what does the ending mean"? My take on it after seeing
it was that it was simply earth only in an alternate reality like the way
that show Slider's was. They had many different realities "same earth only a
different dimmension". Then someone brought to my attention of how did Thade
get there? So, I thought about it and Thade could have gotten a pod from
somewhere (that part I'm not clear on) and gone to earth about 200 years in
the past and conquered the planet. That's my new theory. I know lots of you
hate the film but everyone has to have an opinion on what the ending meant.
So what do you guys think?
Mike,
While I agree with what your saying I don't think you can say it because you
haven't (and won't see) the new film.
I liked the movie. Going in I knew that it could never top the original. It
didn't. But if it did, I would be the first to admit it.
Still, Roeper is entitled to his opinion. That is what he is paid for. He
doesn't have to say or write things to please the legion of POTA fans. He
doesn't have to be a POTA fan to have credibility as a film critic.
Matt
PS While POTA is quite possibly my favorite movie of all time, I don't think
it is anywhere near the best movie of all time. Favorite and best are two
different things.
Well...out of possible 10's..
Story. 4/10
Visuals 8/10
Characters (on the whole) 6/10
Walberg was not a good choice for lead. I was for the most part annoyed by
his character's "I'm a tough guy." act. He seemed removed from the reality
of what was going on around him. I mean, the guy landed on a planet of
intelligent, cultered, yet human-intolerant apes. But he did not convince me
that he was all that disconcerted by this turn of events. Sort of: "Oh hell!
- another weird mission!"
Visuals were wonderful, but had Tim Burton written all over them.
I have to say I didn't see anything that I didn't expect to see. And that's
not always a positive thing for a directors audience. In other words - same
ol' same ol' from Burton.
Another failing of Burton (or the folks he works with) is there are few
surprises.
(Remember Sleepy Hollow? We are shown almost right away who the headless
horseman is!!! So the rest of the movie is just taking us through the
motions of hunting him down. This is not the way to keep your audience in an
emotional "grip".)
Here the "surprise ending" which was hardly surprising. As soon as we know
that Leo's heading back to his earth, we KNOW something's going to go arwy.
So we see earth and - presto - it's not the same earth. (by the simple fact
that Burton allows us to see Leo crash land again and in Washington - come
on, we knew what was going to happen, didn't we?).
Suspense is the life blood of a movie (that and an excellent script). Here,
we had neither.
The in-you-face humorous references to the original were terribly un-funny,
and served to douse moments that otherwise could have been far more
powerful.
Heston's "Damn them all to hell." Puh-leeeze!
Attar's "get your damn dirty hands of me....etc" was, again, expected and
therfore evoked little reaction.
I think a good, sound beating on Leo from Attar would have have at least
been more frightening.
No, this is not the original movie nor a remake. Just a "re-imagining." But
with, unfortunately, the imagination applied to the set and not the
characters or script.
Cooking is one thing, but to suggest that our natural response to crap films
should be for us to go out and make our own? Not terribly realistic.
Thousands of scripts are generated in the industry every year. Is it too
much to ask that the 100 or so actually made into mainstream, large budget
films represent the best of the best? Even if you do "go out and sell your
own screenplay", it will have at least three other writers thrown onto it
before it's produced with an eye toward getting it NOW, rather than getting
it RIGHT, if the Apes rehash is any indication.
But hey, they got the toys out on time - that's what counts, right?
I agree with you on this point. Burton focused intensly on the apes,
and left us to wonder about the humans and their personalities...
What would you have them do then? I mean think about it. you could
just leave mary mark on the planet and end it that way, or send him
back to earth to find something changed. While I don't really want a
sequel, the ability for one is set up with this ending and, IMHO,
believe this ending works, and you really don't know EXACTLY what has
changed, and I think the key is HOW did it change,not so much that
you knew it was going to be different...but whatever...
Obviously Thade got back to Earth. How? I assume in Leo's pod that's in the
swamp. Why? They specifically show that the apes know it's there. It's more
plausible than the excuse for "Escape", though only slightly. Is it earth?
If not, it's a big cheat. Is it another dimension. I try not to bring that
in, so I'd say it's our earth. Leo's chronometer is cut away from in the
2100's. So Thade could've got there in Leo's ship arrived much earlier (that
purple mist doesn't seem to differentiate who left first) and he led the
apes to take over. It's "Back to the Future" with Thade as Biff and Leo as a
befuddled Michael J. Fox. - - - - Jeff K.
      Sorry to hear that. With all the crap we're fed these days it's a shame to see something good go down the tubes because it's TOO popular. I guess you'd probably get in trouble if you took on ads. Maybe Fox could help but I'd hate to see them turn you into a publicity machine.
    I went, I saw, I liked. 4pm show at the Ziegfeld on Saturday afternoon.
    It was good, not great, and boy did it have problems. Erratic script,
    especially towards the end. Wahlberg was a non-presence. Ditto Estella
    Warren. HBC & MCD did fine. But Tim Roth saved this flick. Sure, it was a one
    note performance, but sometimes that's enough. He was positively rabid! Still
    not sure what happens with him at the end. And then The End. First thing that
    came to mind was MAD magazine. At the end of the original, I get the feeling
    that we're all doomed. At the end of this, I walked out with a smile on my
    face thinking, "Well, that was a goof!" But I wasn't pissed off like some
    people definitely will be. Oh well, let the POTAC vs. POTAR wars begin. Go
      Movieheadlines.com has a quote from Bruce Snyder of Fox about the ending:
       " Actually, you're not supposed to be able to (explain it). If the truth be known, it wasn't really supposed to make sense. It was just supposed to go "whoa" , make you think. Now, is he in another world, did he go back in time, did he get forward in time? The reality is there's no firm answer to that. It's whatever you want it to be".
       Well, it did make me think. I think the writers were lazy. And if I'm supposed to make my own ending, does that mean I get a percentage of my ticket price back? It's not a whole movie. And if the endings supposed to be whatever I want than it failed because it wasn't what I wanted.
       Snyder adds: "you've got to remember you just watched a movie about talking monkeys in outer space. Don't look for too much logic".
       Yeah, yeah, I know he's a faceless corporate yes-man but that burned me up. They don't know dick about "Planet of the Apes" and why it's been popular. The box-office proved it's validity and now it can sink for all I care.
      I'd have to agree with you and I'm disappointed, I'd hoped the
      writers intended something. It's one thing to make the ending
      ambiguous, but another to make it intentionally vague and illogical
      w/the rest of the storyline. The new film really plays it safe in so
      many ways. Still liked it though.
      .htmlJeff,with that ending we need a sequal for this loose end,I saw it last night
      and liked some of it and did not like some of it .Leo could have been more
      caring and the humans were almost non existant Tim only focused on the
      apes!The classic will remain the best!My daughter 15 loved the new Generation
      apes movie more,but shes young and likes todays effects.I am going to see it
      again, The more i see it maybe it will grow on me more to see the sequal that
      will be a very good possibility. anyway Attar i wished did more in film.Thade
      was talking in almost a whisper sometimes i could barly hear him,and was
      surprised that Thade had the hots for Ari Daena and Leo could have evolved
      more.Linda Harrison was just a flash my wife missed her completely! Maybe
      after part 2 and 3 sequals the story may get better very much like back to
      Realistic or not Phil, some people just sit around and criticize while
      others actually take some action (whether or not this action makes an impact
      at some point). My point is if you do not like it, do something about it.
      Ring Fox and tell 'em it is crap, write an open letter to Burton and tell
      him it is crap and why, offer him a better idea so he can screw the
      producers next time around etc.
      As for the toys, I saw them at my local store yesterday and they are $30
      each or $50 for Attar on Steed! Limited movement and nowhere near the
      detail I expected (who is Estella supposed to look like?). Thankfully, Alex
      has bought me some from the States and I will not therefore pay so much. I
      must say there will be a large letter/email/video tape (well, maybe not a
      video) telling them the toys need work to justify their price tag (when
      actually it is probably the Aussie economy that needs work to strengthen the
      Aus$....another letter....).
      Yeah you are right Phil - screw affirmative action - I just won't buy any
      more toys and if the movie is crap I'll just complain about it to you
      guys!!!
      Another sad point - I think this movie will kick major ass at the box office
      because Jo Average has not seen the original and will therefore like this
      version (while those of us who have seen it already expect so much). So
      quote me to say it will beat EVERYTHING this year for $s grossed (and no I
      do not see this as a measure of the worth of a movie).
      Cooking is one thing, but to suggest that our natural response to crap films
      should be for us to go out and make our own? Not terribly realistic.
      Thousands of scripts are generated in the industry every year. Is it too
      much to ask that the 100 or so actually made into mainstream, large budget
      films represent the best of the best? Even if you do "go out and sell your
      own screenplay", it will have at least three other writers thrown onto it
      before it's produced with an eye toward getting it NOW, rather than getting
      it RIGHT, if the Apes rehash is any indication.
      But hey, they got the toys out on time - that's what counts, right?
        Movieheadlines.com has a quote from Bruce Snyder of Fox about the ending:
         " Actually, you're not supposed to be able to (explain it). If the truth be known, it wasn't really supposed to make sense. It was just supposed to go "whoa" , make you think. Now, is he in another world, did he go back in time, did he get forward in time? The reality is there's no firm answer to that. It's whatever you want it to be".
         Well, it did make me think. I think the writers were lazy. And if I'm supposed to make my own ending, does that mean I get a percentage of my ticket price back? It's not a whole movie. And if the endings supposed to be whatever I want than it failed because it wasn't what I wanted.
         Snyder adds: "you've got to remember you just watched a movie about talking monkeys in outer space. Don't look for too much logic".
         Yeah, yeah, I know he's a faceless corporate yes-man but that burned me up. They don't know dick about "Planet of the Apes" and why it's been popular. The box-office proved it's validity and now it can sink for all I care.
        .
        I had some problems with various parts of the prop. Which include:
        1. I said it before, and Phil resounded it . . . I know where the human
        population of humans came from and I know where the apes came from. But
        where'd the damn horses come from?
        (I guess we're not supposed to wonder about these things)
        2. As per the recording that Leo listens to, the apes from the ship began to
        run amok at some point in time after the crash landing. Okay, here's an
        idea . . . . there were guns available. Did any of the smart scientists
        ever thing to put any rogue monkeys down before it became a problem? Okay,
        so the apes were getting smarter, but at what point did they become so smart
        that the humans couldn't figure out it would be better to just kill or be
        killed?
        Okay, so once the apes killed off a bunch of the scientists and a few
        remaining scientists scattered . ..
        3. Why is it that the apes continued to create a culture and expanded their
        knowledge of art and science and metalurgy while humans apparently gave up
        the idea of being in control and decided to go back to using sharp sticks
        for a couple thousand years. They still had use of their mental faculties
        and were able to communicate (unlike in the original). And yet with that
        advantage, they still rolled over and let apes take control?
        And this is just something that bothered me, not really a plot hole or
        anything, but . . .
        In the new version I realized that they tried to express how brutal the apes
        were by having them toss and bash the humans around every few minutes.
        However, while the original had a little of that physical brutality, there
        were also psychologically disturbing details in there as well . . .
        experimental brain surgery, lobotomies, demasculization, using humands for
        target practice.
        It seems to me that some of these things that weren't acutally shown were
        actually more disturbing to just think about. Sometimes it's what you don't
        see that's disturbing. After tossing humans forty feet for about the fifth
        time, I think I became de-sensitised.
        Well, just a few more beefs I guess, which are just in addition to my
        general observations. BTW, I haven't talked to anyone in person that has
        liked it. Everybody at work who had seen it had nothing but generally bad
        things to say, as was the case of the people leaving the theater after the
        showing I saw. The only things I and my friends couldn't agree on were
        which were the WORST parts.
        Here's to hoping they make a better attempt at a remake in 2030 :)
        Boy! Next to watching "Battle" again I can't wait for that!! >>
        Tim Burton doesn't believe in directors cuts, remember? I sure hope this
        film changes his mind about that. It could certainly use some editing. If
        it doesn't I'll be making my own "directors cut" when I get the vid.
        This series could be saved. First off by having Tim Roth pry open Wahlberg's
        character's mouth and putting a soul in there! To quote Roger Ebert, "He's
        has Estella Warren and Helena Bonham-Carter and all he wants to do is get in
        his pod and blast off to who knows where. If I were him I'd stay on that
        planet because I think he has better chances there." Too right. The only
        thing I really disagree with is Mr. Eberts suggestion that Clooney would have
        given the role more presence. That may be, but I think if George Clooney
        were reading those lines he might have come off even more surly than
        Wahlberg. Then that can all the lines of homage, at least to a bear minimum.
        And put an ape animal psychologist in charge of Leo now that he's back on
        Earth, played by Kim Hunter, if she'll do another Ape movie. I'm certainly
        not going to suggest it until they can get someone on them that can write.
          Yeah, good. But this movie will not spark a fascination with apes, people are too busy for that. How much good did "Gorillas in the Mist" do? It will only spark an interest in who Mark Wahlberg is sleeping with.
           Because if the Thade on earth happens to just be another ape named Thade then the ending is even more ridiculous.
          If not, it's a big cheat. Is it another dimension. I try not to bring that
          How do we know that the Thade shown at the end of the film is the living
          earth.  AND, why wouldn't what happened on the space station with the apes
          Yeah, I don't know how that put those movies in the same class as Mary
          Poppins. Lets just look at the first few. Planet: bare-assed stuff, throat
          shooting, killing left right & center. Beneath: maiming, face pulling off,
          killing left, right & center and blowing up the whole world. Escape:
          strangulation, dinner tray fu, killing including a mother and child. Not
          exactly The Gnome-Mobile. They should have been at least PG or as they were
          called back then GP.
          Warning, Spoilers coming up...!
          I love Back to The Future, and I can see how this new flick is like
          it in some ways, but not quite. If FOX really did go as far to go
          for that completely wrong view of space and time travel, as done in
          the BTTF series, wouldn't Marky Mark have vanished, dissapread, had
          been erased from history, like other things in the series seemed to
          do? No, this seems more like a Sphere, or infinite regression type
          theory of time travel if you will. My prediction, Thade goes back to
          Earth in the pod Marky Mark crashed down in. Maybe Leo's chimp even
          flew it, sitting on Thade's lap.... :) The oberon seemed in much
          Linda was in the cage with Marky Mark and he said "what is this place" or
          something like that and she looked at him. You can see her in the second
          trailer too. We'll be glad to have you at the chat next week. I'll give
          details to it soon that you might want to print out if you don't know how to
          use a yahoo chat.
          Yeah, I know absolute befuddlement is what *I* look for in a satisfying
          denouement. Maybe it was secretly directed by John Cassavettes from
          beyond the grave?
          Quite the opposite - I saw a scene with Ari swinging around and it really
          put me off!
          But no more than the awful cartoon series - which I would pay to own.
          Let's hope that the sequel will be better not worse... (knowing how sequels
          On Movieheadlines.com Wahlberg saysof the ending: "There have been debates,
          but I thought it was fantastic. Doors are left open and it was very
          intentional."
          As for the sequel, he says, "I kind of know what's going to happen, and
          part of it I like a lot. I think the studio will let Tim go a bit
          further..."
          He only likes "part of it"? That's how I felt about THIS film!
