Well, believe it or not, I made a prediction to someone here in the group
that APES would be #1 at the box-office for three weekends in a row.  But now
I don't think so because the movie is really only mediocre at best, and I
think the general word-of-mouth will be bad.  It might pull it off this
weekend, but I wouldn't bet on it.  Still, I hope it does do well.

Oh, yeah -- the make-up.   All in all I'd have to say I like the original
make-up designs better.  I prefer my Boullian apes civilized, not the more
animal types they are in this film.

First of all, the way that Burton shaped the performances of the actors
playing ape characters was incredible. Even with the kind apes, such
as Ari there is an "animal" quality to the performance, lurking just
underneath
the surface at all times. You are always aware that this is an animal...not
at all like the performances in the originals, where the characters seem
much more like humans in ape costumes. I think this is a bit of genius
on Burton's part.

Keep in mind that this totally relies on performance, rather than
technology.
In other words, this could have been done back in 1968, just as easily has
today.

I think you miss the point of Boulle's conception.  The apes aren't supposed
to be animals -- they're supposed to be 'civilized' like men.  In fact, they
ARE supposed to be men.  The whole idea is to create an allegory on the
pomposity of man thinking he's better than any other animal just because he
has a certain level of intelligence.  By any quirk of evolution intellectual
self-awareness could have easily come to reside in some other creature, such
as the other great apes.

By making the apes more like animals, the new movie subverts Boulle's
original intent and it is for this reason that I hate the new film.  It's
been made by people who have a vastly different agenda then remaining
faithful to what Boulle or even Serling or Wilson intended.

Some can just except it for what it is and enjoy it on that level.  I just
can't.  I really wanted more sophistication in the new approach, and it's
just not there.   There just isn't really anything in the new film for me to
like, except that people are for the moment paying more attention to the 1968
film, which is my favorite movie.

APEMANIA did a spot for British televsion today and we wound up at the Hard
Rock Cafe (Universal Citywalk) for food drinks and laughs afterwords, and
lo-and-behold ICEMAN (a guy named Salem) from the new X-Man film hung with us
all evening. He says they are doing #2 right now, and 3 and 4 will be right
behind it. You gotta love it! Finally, Hollywood is realizing that there is a
market in super hero films. Good or bad, I love it!

Brian

Oh, and by the by, the most common comment made to us apes tonight was "your
film was so much better."

Dear 'CrystalRoses',
I know this has been raised before, and PLEASE do not be offended but could
you read over your posts before you post them? There are numerous typos often
making it difficult to understand the gist of some of your posts.

"But come on Rick Backer and Tim Roth saved the film ."

I'm a lousy speller myself, and probably wouldn't even leave posts if I
didn't have 'spell check'. Once again, It is not my intention to offend
anybody as all are welcome to contribute. Not that I even do much of that
myself.
Best,
KEN

I'm currently working on a contract basis at Columbia TriStar. I think the film was offered to them for potential acquisition in this territory. Not sure of the details so please don't quote me.
Jeepers or Apes? Now that is apples and oranges...er, bananas.

Glad you were entertained.

Now, a question on-topic:  Which was more entertaining, Jeepers or Apes?

That's hilarious, Brian. But as for "X-Men", it's just what I said. One
right after the other doesn't bode well for scripts. Maybe in the real
world, but not with all the interference corporations give. And "Apes" is
going to fit that pattern. Joel Schumacher better start reading Boulle's
book.

I thought that it was a cute way to give a slight tie-in to the original

I saw the new "Starlog" with the Natalie Trundy interview (5 pages, more
than alotted to Burton's girlfriend Lisa Marie!). I picked out the pictures
and they chose the ones they wanted. Not all of my faves are in there but
there's the picture of us on the Statue of Liberty beach a la "the
unofficial companion", 2 pictures with Bill Blake (one that includes John
Chambers, which is cool), and a whole slew of just plain Natalie pictures,
including one with Mother Teresa, the Halloween one I've mentioned before
(Jacobs as Dr. Dolittle, Nat as Zira), and others. I'm also pleased that
they took my advice and mentioned the neglect Jacobs has gotten over this
new movie thing.

Also saw Joe Russo's book in the store and was floored by the photos. That
book is a treasure. Joe asked me to write a release slip for the pics that
Natalie signed so he was able to use photos denied other books and he'd got
them from Jacobs' archives. Lots of candid stuff, it has to be seen to be
believed.

And there's a very nice "making of" book for the new movie that's out too.
It looks like the new merchandise is slow in arriving but there's plenty to
read.

Okay folks, here's the numbers for the weekend. . . .

"Rush Hour 2" has made an incredible $66.8 Million!!!! (I didn't go see it
this weekend, by the way)

"Planet of the Apes" has dropped to number two at the boxoffice with $28.5
million this weekend, which is pretty good given all the bad reviews it got.

I was at the movies this afternoon and stuck my head into a 1:40 pm showing
of POTA and the theatre was full. What I'm hearing from friends is that the
kids love the movie, but adults pretty much think it's stupid.

POTA's 10-day total is $124.7 million!!!!

I think we all can pretty much expect that there will be a sequel, but please
mighty Lawgiver, next time give us a better picture!!! Please, O'
Lawgiver! Pleeeeease!!

I guess that's the right message. People want to see "Planet of the Apes"
movies but weren't satisfied with this one. Though I wish it had been #1. No
movie really took the box office. "Shrek" did well but it had all summer.

Now let's see how "lord of the Rings" and "Harry Potter" do. If I see
another "Harry Potter" billboard I'm going to vomit! They're everywhere and
the movie's 3 months away.

You know I seem to remember Boulle mentioning something like this in his book
to explain the mental apathy and lack of originality that began to plague man
and that eventually led to the domesticated house apes just taking over on
the planet Soror.

Hey, maybe this remake thing isn't so bad after all!!!  Now, if we can just

Well, that's what I would have done in the first place, as well as hire truly
intelligent screenwriters that could provide sophisticated dialogue.  But
this isn't what Fox wanted.  They wanted a kiddies film and that's what they
got -- and I'll bet they're happy with it.  I'M SURE it would make Boulle
vomit!!

But as for a sequel. . . .  I think Fox has put itself in a corner.  How do
they straighten out the mess they've made with this new movie?

Michael, it hasn't opened yet in Australia, right?    I can't wait to hear

.htmlHey gang,

I have a friend in Australia who just saw Burton's POTA at a preview and I
thought you might be interested in reading his review.  This guy is a
published novelist, so I think he knows how to judge these things.  His
comments I agree with completely.

Rory --

I had the fortune (?) of seeing a POTA preview last night ... and I should
have listened to you.

I liked the Main Title (and the accompanying music), and I was
entertained by the opening space sequence. It was all downhill from there.

Tim Burton's utter lack of story sense quickly became evident after the
crash landing. The apes just appear -- no build up, nothing. The gloomy
city set was ugly and claustrophobic (and I usually like that
"studio-bound" feel). The characterizations were all one note. Wahlberg and
the beach babe were completely charmless. The music was dreadfully
uninspired (Williams and Goldsmith have an excuse for getting worse --
they're 70; so what's Elfman's reason?)

Further, like just about every movie these days, things just happen for
no clear reason. The humans escape and head into the desert (with no
visible provisions) and I'm still not sure why. They find an old speaceship
that's still working. A whole tribe of humans materialize seeming to
worship Wahlberg as a hero. The head gorilla becomes a sensitive new age
ape in a finger snap.

The Ape Lincoln ending was both ludicrous and inadequately set up.
In all, a total wash out and another reason for Hollywood to hang its
head in shame.

Image Entertainment is putting out a special edition of the documentary
"Behind the Planet of the Apes" that was seen on AMC and included in the DVD
boxed set of POTA films from Fox.  The special edition will contain extras
such as the complete test film from 1966, outakes and rushes from PLANET, and
on a second disc a two hour interview with the late Roddy McDowall.  (By the
way, Joe Russo says that the people interviewing McDowall didn't know half of
what they should have, and that it was a shame he couldn't have conducted the
interview, but that those who did were just ass-kisser friends of the
producer Kevin Burns).

The APES DVDs coming out on August 21st are just a reissue of the old DVDs.

Remastered DVDs of all the classic APES films, with extras, are probably two
years away.

It opens in 2 days Rory, but you might be surprised because I am one of the few people who liked Jar-Jar.

You see, I will be seeing POTA with my 2 kids (6 and 3) who love the idea of talking monkeys.  The 6 yr old saw Phantom Menace (after watching the originals and loving them) and loved Binks' antics.  So I guess I'll probably be happy for the kids.

Now, if it were up to me, I'd be stting a movie between Beneath and the TV Series and trying like mad to explain away all the glaring inconsistecies.  There would be a lot of other countries shown (finale showing the Sydney Harbour Bridge as Paul Hogan screams "Bloody Hell Mate, you actually did it!!!  You dickheads!!!!) - why is the Northern American continent referred to as "the world"?  Maybe humans still run the other countries.

Anyway, I'll let you know what I think Rory.

How would you approach a new POTA project?

I guess the obvious answer is to remake the Boulle novel using original
makeup but with animatronics on the faces for more expression and a few
Jar-Jar Binks animated characters/lip movements.

Ideas anyone?

Michael

Well, that's what I would have done in the first place, as well as hire truly
intelligent screenwriters that could provide sophisticated dialogue.  But
this isn't what Fox wanted.  They wanted a kiddies film and that's what they
got -- and I'll bet they're happy with it.  I'M SURE it would make Boulle
vomit!!

But as for a sequel. . . .  I think Fox has put itself in a corner.  How do
they straighten out the mess they've made with this new movie?

Michael, it hasn't opened yet in Australia, right?    I can't wait to hear
what you think when you see it.

I guess with POTA the problem is that what appeals to me in the original film
are the more sophisticated aspects and not the more juvenile ones, which is

There's a sci-fi book called "Genus Homo" that's very similar to "Apes" and predates Boulle's book. I wonder if someone could buy the rights to that and VERY LOOSELY adapt it. If Fox complaims, they say, "No, it's "Genus Homo" ". Of course, the studios might think it's about gay people and not read it.

Speak of the devil. I just went to Movieheadlines.net and there's a thing
that Kevin Smith is considering suing over the ending of "Apes". Claims it
was stolen from his comic book. Burton says, " Anybody that knows me knows I
do not read comic books. And I especially wouldn't read anything that was
created by Kevin Smith".

Smith and Burton got into it a while back. Smith wrote a version of
"Superman" the movie that brought Burton on as director, then Burton threw
out Smith's script. Smith told me that arguement wasn't as bad as the media
said and he was looking forward to Burton's "Apes". Guess the truce is over.

There's a review of the new "Behind" at cinescape.com. They include an answer from Roddy about doing a remake: "I think a remake is the most ridiculous idea on the face of the Earth. There's no reason to do one just for the sake of doing one". Ironic, since Roddy tried in the early '90's to get one going with Peter Jackson ("Lord of the Rings"). From what I understand, Roddy's interest was in picking up from the original films.

of Frankenstein"  and others.  I don't know what if any extras will be
included with these.

OK, Rory - - -

What did you think about Branaugh's "Frankenstein" movie, starring our own
Helena B. C.? Following an idea Jacobs tried to pursue, doing a faithful
adaptation of the original novel. Mr. Rick Baker said that's the only movie
he pleaded to do (he didn't get it) because he's a "Frankenstein" freak.

I thought it stunk!!!   Branaugh went over the top far too often, and pushed
the film into the realm of bizarre silliness.  I felt sorry for Helena B. C.
She was sleeping with Branaugh at the time, so I guess it seemed fine with
here, but when she too became a monster -- which WAS NOT in Shelley's book --
the film became an artistic disaster.  But you know what?  It's fast becoming
a forgotten film, a fate that awaits the new POTA, except that'll probably
have a sequel.

As for Baker doing the make-up. . . .  Well, a big wish of mine is that
Universal does an update of the 1931 "Frankenstein," setting it in that late
19th century, early 20th mid-European never-never land,
styling it very much like the 30's films, AND use the original Jack Pierce
make-up design for the monster.  BUT!!!!  Make it a serious and scary as hell
horror flick.  One of the problems with horror films these days is they all
want to make you laugh, too.   I say TRAUMATIZE the audience!

Oh, if only I were the king of Hollywood!

I saw them film an "Apes" spoof for "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" and I
went to a screening of the film. There's a lot of "Apes" refs in it. Plus
Kevin Smith was in the Fox "Apes" special. He told me personally he's a fan.

But that's a cool comic. What year was that issue?

Jeff, did you see the film or better, rent the DVD of "Free Enterprise" and
catch all the POTA references in that?
