Speak of the devil. I just went to Movieheadlines.net and there's a thing
that Kevin Smith is considering suing over the ending of "Apes". Claims it
was stolen from his comic book. Burton says, " Anybody that knows me knows I
do not read comic books. And I especially wouldn't read anything that was
created by Kevin Smith".

Smith and Burton got into it a while back. Smith wrote a version of
"Superman" the movie that brought Burton on as director, then Burton threw
out Smith's script. Smith told me that arguement wasn't as bad as the media
said and he was looking forward to Burton's "Apes". Guess the truce is over.

There's a review of the new "Behind" at cinescape.com. They include an
answer from Roddy about doing a remake: "I think a remake is the most
ridiculous idea on the face of the Earth. There's no reason to do one just
for the sake of doing one". Ironic, since Roddy tried in the early '90's to
get one going with Peter Jackson ("Lord of the Rings"). From what I
understand, Roddy's interest was in picking up from the original films.

I think Fox's answer to Roddy McDowall's 'ridiculous idea' remark would be,
"We just made a ridiculous amount of money off a ridiculous concept we just
made more ridiculous because we know the public will go see whatever crap we
make as long as we hype it like it's the Second Coming!  Rest in peace,
Roddy."

Forget it. It's just like "Apes". They're remaking these things because of their enduring popularity, but then they totally change what made them special in the first place. Witness "The Mummy" and everything else.                   - - - - Jeff K.

OK, Rory - - -

What did you think about Branaugh's "Frankenstein" movie, starring our own
Helena B. C.? Following an idea Jacobs tried to pursue, doing a faithful
adaptation of the original novel. Mr. Rick Baker said that's the only movie
he pleaded to do (he didn't get it) because he's a "Frankenstein" freak.

   - - - - Jeff K.

I thought it stunk!!!   Branaugh went over the top far too often, and pushed
the film into the realm of bizarre silliness.  I felt sorry for Helena B. C.
She was sleeping with Branaugh at the time, so I guess it seemed fine with
here, but when she too became a monster -- which WAS NOT in Shelley's book --
the film became an artistic disaster.  But you know what?  It's fast becoming
a forgotten film, a fate that awaits the new POTA, except that'll probably
have a sequel.

As for Baker doing the make-up. . . .  Well, a big wish of mine is that
Universal does an update of the 1931 "Frankenstein," setting it in that late
19th century, early 20th mid-European never-never land,
styling it very much like the 30's films, AND use the original Jack Pierce
make-up design for the monster.  BUT!!!!  Make it a serious and scary as hell
horror flick.  One of the problems with horror films these days is they all
want to make you laugh, too.   I say TRAUMATIZE the audience!

Oh, if only I were the king of Hollywood!

Yeah, I did. I only caught two: the Linda H. ref and the guy scoring because he has them all on laserdisc. I hear they're planning a "Free Enterprise" TV show a la "Seinfeld".

Jeff, did you see the film or better, rent the DVD of "Free Enterprise" and

Yeah, that's pretty funny. Hamill doesn't play Luke, he plays a bad guy in
the fictional film within a film (which kinda plays on his voice as the
joker in "Batman Animated"). But he says "Don't f*** with a Jedi!" or
something like that. And wait 'til you see Carrie Fisher's part!

I just picked up and saw the new POTA DVD behind the scenes.
Honestly it's nothing I haven't already seen because I have most of this stuff on VHS. But it is worth the buy as there are somethings never seen. The complete outtakes is one to name a few.

Got it for $19.99 at my local Best Buy.
Great job Brian, it's really great to have all of this in DVD quality!
I was getting tired of seeing this stuff in poor VHS quality.
Very cool.

Best,

Of topic, but Rory, you'll be happy to hear about the upcoming Universal
Monster classics being released on DVD next month. "The Bride of
Frankenstein" looks to have some cool extras. I'll be getting that one for
sure.
Best,
KEN

I guess in Australia you're just getting "Bride of Frankenstein."  It's been
out here in the U.S. for almost two years -- and the extras are wonderful (as
are the extras in the special edition DVD to the James Bond movies --
listening Fox?!!!).

At the end of August here we're getting the next batch of Universal Monster
films, DVD double-feature discs of "Son of Frankenstein/Ghost of
Frankenstein", "Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman (a flawed film I love)/House
of Frankenstein"  and others.  I don't know what if any extras will be
included with these.

Very cool.

If Fox complaims, they say, "No, it's "Genus Homo" ". Of course, the studios might think it's about gay people and not read it.

I too hope there comes a time before I die when someone will attempt a thinking man's POTA, but I doubt it.  Cameron's apes would have probably been much worse.  Maybe in the hands of Ridley Scott, Spielberg or Gilliam (please lord, please).......but who knows?  I think the fact that the NAME Planet of the Apes will draw a crowd is the problem - then you are playing percentages and that my friend IS Hollywood.  Maybe if Fox did not have the rights, a French film company would do credit to Boulle, but I don't think anyone could afford to buy the rights.

Mike, just between you and me... I liked Jar-Jar, and found the Phantom

You know, as much as I complain about how bad I think the new APES movie is,
I was thinking the other day that there are lots of awful movies that I love,

it!

And I'm a huge fan of the old Universal "Frankenstein" films, but many of
them were far, far from perfect, yet it doesn't bother me.

I guess with POTA the problem is that what appeals to me in the original film
are the more sophisticated aspects and not the more juvenile ones, which is
probably why I find "Battle" nearly unwatchable.  Just a movie with talking
apes isn't enough -- there has to be some thought behind the words.

I really have no problems with those that think the new APES is okay.  I'm
glad some people like it, but as for me I can't wait until it's a distant

There's a review of the new "Behind" at cinescape.com. They include an answer from Roddy about doing a remake: "I think a remake is the most ridiculous idea on the face of the Earth. There's no reason to do one just for the sake of doing one". Ironic, since Roddy tried in the early '90's to get one going with Peter Jackson ("Lord of the Rings"). From what I understand, Roddy's interest was in picking up from the original films.

I am the author of Planet of the Apes as American Myth, the first book ever published about the Apes series.  I thought your visitors might want to know that I am doing a panel and autograph session along with Buck Kartalian (Julius-Planet), Austin Stoker (MacDonald-Battle and Cartoon Series) and Booth Colman (Zaius-TV series), on Sunday August 12 at the Fangoria Convention in Pasadena California.   It's about the art, not the money. Anyway, according to Movieheadlines.net, Disney is determined to keep "Pearl Harbor" in theatres until it passes $200 million. Sofar, after 11 weeks, it's made $194.6 million. This weekend it made $435,000. When summer started, P.H. was to be the big hit, and perhaps the next "Titanic". That's before Disney learned, don't hire Michael Bay to make a James Cameron film ; he's likely to make a Michael Bay film.  $200 million is the number to beat. "Shrek" did it, "Mummy Returns" did it, some others probably will, including "Apes".

I talked to Eric Greene tonight about the new movie. Unfortunately, he asked me what I thought first (a disappointment but fun on it's own) and he just said he agreed. He feels it's "mediocre" but had some "great moments" that didn't pan out. He felt it wasn't really a Burton film and would have liked it better if Burton had been truer to himself. Most damning of all, I asked Eric if he could write a chapter about it in his book and he said there wasn't enough there. This from a guy who found something even in the cartoons. He said there were some interesting social topics in the flick but they weren't handled well. Didn't even like Ari, felt she was too obvious, though many have singled her out as the best character (including me).

Natalie Trundy hated the movie, especially the "squash faced" makeup. Her son felt it was a "Back to the Future" retread (See?), so not much support there from the Jacobs camp.

Damn. He's got stuff in there about each unproduced Apes remake script,
too. "If Greene can't pontificate, the movie ain't that great."

Color me cynical, but after pimping this thing for over a year, a four

there wasn't enough there. This from a guy who found something even in the
cartoons. He said there were some interesting social topics in the flick
but they weren't handled well. Didn't even like Ari, felt she was too
obvious, though many have singled her out as the best character (including
me).

Natalie Trundy hated the movie, especially the "squash faced" makeup. Her
son felt it was a "Back to the Future" retread (See?), so not much support
there from the Jacobs camp.

Mediocre indeed!!!  I think Greene is being very diplomatic.  I would imagine
he's hugely disappointed, and the fact that he doesn't want to write about
the new movie shows, I think, that like me there's some hostility towards
those responsible for this movie.  I'm angry because I tried to be so
positive during the making of this thing, and kept telling myself, "It's not
going to be that bad."  All that waiting and expectation, and then it turns
out worse than I feared.  I'm pissed!  What we have is "Planet of the Apes"
with a frontal lobotomy.  An emaciated APES.  I can't believe I'm saying this
but in some ways "Battle" is a better film because at least it tried to say
something.  Burton's POTA is just another souless "Summer Blockbuster" made
to turn a quick buck.

I think the kindest thing that can be said about those that made the new
movie is that they were inept.  I don't think they understood at all what
made the original film work, most depressingly of all Richard Zanuck.  As far
as Burton goes, well I've never thought he was that great a filmmaker, and he
probably saw this as a guarantied money-making film -- which it was -- and a
nice paycheck.  I doubt very much he'll direct the sequel -- if there is one.

I also agree with Natalie Trundy about Baker's solution to get better mouth
articulation.   John Chamber's original make-up design may have problems, but
I like it better.

I've heard Baker say that one of the things he thought he could improve was
that in the original you basically had just one sculpture design for all the
apes -- that they all looked alike.
Well I'll say something now that I'm sure Eric Greene would agree with.  In
PLANET Zira says to Taylor, "All men look alike to most apes."  I think then
that it's kind of appropriate that the make-up in the movie has "All apes
look alike to most men."

Take that Baker!!!   1968's PLANET OF THE APES is a perfect movie.

Wow!  I actually saw a new commercial for POTA tonight during NBC's Dateline.
I hope Fox runs more during the week if they want the movie to have a good
third weekend.   Onething that did get me though. . . they used Roeper's
review line at the end of the spot, "It's not as good as the original -- it's
BETTER!"

I think that was a major mistake. The original ending was better.
An in the end that can give a major backlash. Not only with ape fans but for those who also know the original ending.

That's doubtful. I don't think Linda Harrison is a big enough name to draw
people to see a movie (most people who are not Apes fans probably don't even
know who she is).

She was probably in the movie because her ex-hubby was the producer and their
kids begged him to get her in there somewhere.

I just got back from vacation last night and am catching up on the hundreds
of emails that have been posted in the last week. It's great to see the list
    hopping again.

Back to my vacation. On the way to the airport, I stopped at Barnes and Noble
and was pleasantly surprised to see "Planet of the Apes Revisited" on the
shelf. I picked up a copy and read the whole thing on my flight from Detroit
to L.A. and the three hours I had to kill while waiting for my connecting
    flight.

I thought it was a great book. There is alot of inside stuff there that I had
not known before. The photos were great too! It was cool that several members
of this list (Rory, Jeff, etc). got a thank you. My only criticism would be
that it could have been edited a bit better. Some parts seemed long winded
and the "Behind" documentary was referred to as "Back to the Planet of the
Apes" a couple of times. Overall, I liked the book better than Greene's. I
think my favorite chapter was the one about "Beneath." I loved reading the
dirt on that one from James Franciscus' rewrites, to Zanuck screwing over
Heston and Mort Abrahms' overall dickish attitude toward director Ted Post.
No wonder that film has so many problems!

Pick this book up if you have a chance. You will not be disappointed.

By the way, we still haven't heard what Terry Hokens or Brian and the rest of
the bunch at APEMANIA think of the new film.

They gave it to Burton because of his track record. Gilliam doesn't have
the following Burton does. They'd give him the sequel in a minute.

    - - - Jeff K.

P.S.: But Gilliam big enough he wouldn't do a sequel to someone else's
    movie.

Yeah that is what I mean - on the new DVD.

I was hoping they might have the deleted Escape intro, Conquest scenes and
Battle scenes and maybe the pregnant Nova alternate ending (was that
    filmed?).

Saw Burton's POTA last night and I really liked it. It has its problems but
by today's standards (which it was always going to be - TODAY'S standards)
    it was OK.

I agree it could have been better.

It was too fast - the pace went along without stopping to think. On the
space station then in the jungle with apes all round. They needed to build
the suspense with a trek through the desert me thinks.

It was predictable (many of the full theatre leaving were saying "that was
very entertaining, but sadly predictable"). Again, everything today is
predictable. The supposedly LEAST predictable movie (6th sense) for a while
took me about 15 minutes to figure.

Those corny lines were just WRONG!!!! But hey - I have worked it out!!!!!
They had the POTA DVD set on the space station and the chimp revolutionist
did not like Taylor's lines so he made apes practice these lines
    religiously. :)

Thade's tanrum was embarrassing!!! But kind of funny in a way......I
    think.......

Shock ending? For whom? It was always going to be that!

I interpret the ending as either:

    (1) It was Earth all along (I don't think this could be right); or:

    (2) Thade found a way to travel to the same storm and his time warp took him
to a time before Leo landed. Thade then led a revolution and Leo turned up
too late (I'm sure this is the correct interpretation); or

    (3) There was a revolution on Earth and the Apes took off to the Space
Station, found it was missing, went through the storm, found Thade and liked
his style and said "Hey, we need a stand up guy like you on Earth!!!!!"
(unlikely, but who knows where Hollywood will take us???!!!)

Good news Rory - the sequel could be very close to "Monkey Planet" - the
apes are in helicopters and have technology. The earth apes seem to be more
"human" in their walk and none of them made shrieking ape noises so maybe
Burton had them more like apes (swinging, shreiking) in this one because
they had only evolved a few generations.

This movie could have been set anywhere and as I see it the only reason it
could be the "Planet of the Apes" we know it is due to the ending. The rest
is totally detached from the first 5. You could even go so far as to use
the original make-up in the sequel and explain this is because the apes are
evolving - then have a shock ending where they evolve into humans!!!! The
apes back on earth even speak more intelligibly.

But I like the references to the originals (and I got at least one reference
to each of the first 5 - did anyone else?), I liked Paul Giantini
(spelling?) and the script was OK, not great but not TOO bad.

I'm just going to see it again and I'll write more later.

    Michael

I don't know why you find that depressing, Rory. He admitted that he didn't
have a clue about the blacklist subtext in the trial scene, in the Behind
doco. In fact he thought people were reading things into it after the fact.
It should be obvious he just doesn't get it. And he makes films for a
living! This is not a bright guy.
As far as Apes looking alike. I never thought they did. I've seen dealers
say that it's a picture of one ape when I can clearly see that it's another.
On the other had I have heard people saying they couldn't tell the new
    gorillas apart. So... Whatever...
There was a guy at the film fest that said he felt the new film dragged. I
thought the only part that dragged was the climactic battle, which for me
    made it anti climactic.

Well, let's just say I've been looking into ways to right what once went
wrong. Just call me Scott Bakula. Part of it was getting Arthur and
Natalie's names out there during the Zanuckfest. The "Starlog", the
"Premiere", the books. Natalie had more pictures than anyone in the
"unofficial companion", she's very prominent in "Revisited" (in his intro,
Joe says the book literally couldn't have been written without her). I noted
how in the Fox special Zanuck only referred to Jacobs as "a guy" who came
into his office with 'Apes". Well, Zanuck, people are going to remember
    "that guy's" POTA, not yours.

Larry Landsman was Joe Russo's writing partner.  They both went out to Arthur

contains pictures of Larry when he was younger making himself up as an ape.

Yup, that's some of them that I got. Hey, unlike the script writers for
most of the original sequels, it seemd these guys at least watched the first
    5 films!!!!!

Ken, I look at this movie as being like "Stop the Planet of the Apes, I Want
to Get Off!!" or a Twilight Zone episode. It was not really a genuine POTA
movie but a movie that contained lots of POTA references. It was just made
by the gang that owns the name so they slapped the name on it to milk more
    takings.

I really think we should all pool together and send a comment to Mr Burton
for his consideration - and can we point out some of the plot holes (or were
they to pay homage originals too???).

I think when the critics say this movie was made with fans in mind, the fans
they are talking about are really 30-45 year old people who have seen the
film and a sequel or 2.

In today's Marilyn Beck column, she says it's a given that Fox will want a
sequel , but says Zanuck doesn't know when he'll be free to do it. But I
don't think Fox would wait for Zanuck. If he's truly too busy it'll probably
be handed off to his sons. Dean Zanuck is producing Tom Hanks' "Road to
Perdition". Linda H. told me he found the comic book it's based on.

.html Yeah, Just how dumb can a greedy person get?!!  Advertizing to get busted!  What will they think of next?

I know that many of the Burton Apes props that turned up on eBay prior to the film's release were confiscated by authorities (from the buyers), so be careful folks.  The Planet Hollywood auctions are ligit, but be careful of the other sellers, especially one that appears to be a girlfriend of a guy that worked for Rick Baker.  The cops are watching for those auctions.

Ask questions of the sellers.  Get proof that they are legally able to sell the items they claim to have.
Don't be a victim and be out you cash as well as the piece.  The police have taken several items from folks who innocently bought them off eBay, but because many of them were stolen from set, the items are being held as evidence.  It's unlikely the purchasers will ever see the items or their cash again.

    Be careful.

Many fans know that Boulle's novel has been neglected. Between movies it
seems impossible to find in current editions. An interview with a publisher
at Ballantine at Movieheadlines.com (from "USA Today") says that they've
gone back to press 3 times on it for the new movie (115,000 copies) and they
are planning to rerelease it after the movie in it's own edition and keep it
    out there as a classic.

Speaking of books, Cinescape.com reviews the movie novelization today and
says it doesn't fill in the gaps at all. In fact, it says it's even worse
storytelling than the movie. Gives it a grade of "F". How's those comic
    books doing?

Good! He made a lot of you sit through "Pearl Harbor". How do YOU like it, Affleck? Maybe if he gets sober he'll choose better movies.

P.S.: His buddy Matt Damon turned down "Apes", but the guy in the comics adaptation looks like Damon.

I saw on E! News tonight that Ben Affleck left rehab this weekend just long
enough to catch "Planet of the Apes."

I'll bet he wanted a drink afterward.

I didn't think it was excellent, but it wasn't that bad -- ridiculous -- but
not bad, and Affleck didn't make me see it.  I did that all by myself!

If you want to see the movie again, go to the theatre. It'll help the
franchise. Screw the bootlegs. A pristine DVD will be here in a few months.

Yeah, I totaly agree with that. I've seen it 4 times and ready to see it again on the Big Screen. The bootleg is just to keep me entertained after it leaves the theatres and until it's released on DVD. There's that mid time that it will keep me going APE!

I didn't buy it, nor did I as for it. It was sent to me buy someone that felt I deserved it for all the hard work. No return address.

    And no, it wasn't FOX.
Nor is it for sale nor to give away.
    So please don't ask. Sorry.

    Best,
    Al

I'm in that age group. I've seen the film and the sequels.
And I didn't get the feeling that this movie was made with me in mind.
