No discrimination T. I am 36 in a couple of weeks too.

I was just saying that when the comment is made that this film will please
the FANS, they are probably loosely referring to fans as people who
incidentally saw some movies back then and remember them fondly.

What's with the age discrimination, Mike?
I'm in that age group. I've seen the film and the sequels.
And I didn't get the feeling that this movie was made with me in mind.

I saw the twelve inch electronic talking Attar doll at Toys R Us last night
and one of the lines that it says is:

"The only good human, is a dead human!"

I don't recall that line in the new film.

PS The toy sucked!

All their 12"ers suck. They make the ones they released a couple years ago
look like works of art, and people hated those too. Leo looks like he's had
paint spilled on him, Attar has a plastic head with no fur (except spewing
from his arms and legs). I like the 7" Attar, Leo and Thade. Other than that
I'd rather keep after the Medicoms.

Oh. In the new "Previews" it says the Kubricks will be imported in
December for $14.95 a set. That's worth the price, for those who couldn't
get them as imports.

Can someone provide me with an update on the Planet of the Apes videogame that
is (was?) supposed to be released soon? I'd love to finally have a decent game
based on the movies.

There was an article in "Variety" a couple of months ago saying they've
shelved it for now because they don't want kiddies to get confused between
the also-ran original and their beloved Burton version.

I was renting a DVD in Blockbuster over the weekend and they had some stuff
from the new movie. I picked up an Attar key chain. There's a button below
his head that makes his mouth open in a roar when you push it. It's kind of
cool and was only $4 so I got it, and NO I'm not using it for a key chain.
That's all I'll buy from the new movie.

Oh, okay. Yeah, it did give me that Apey feeling from time to time. I just
think they should have asked the fans what would have played well and what
wouldn't. Then they might have pleased more of them and the movie going
public and critics alike.

It's the Cinema Classics version of the Boulle novel. I found one in my
local Waldenbooks (red tag special no less) and the liner notes said that
the company was dedicated to putting the novels that "classic films" were
based on back into print. At the time, their next project was 'Bridge
Over the River Kwai'. I also remember seeing a version in Coliseum Books
in NYC about 10 years ago (yeesh!!) that had a picture of Ursus on the
cover- the promo photo from BENEATH where he's riding on a horse with
pistol in hand. As I recall, it had a kind of white-ish background. So it
has been in print at least sporadically.

Now I'm not saying anything here either way (not for or against it), but
wouldn't it be more appropriate for you guys to do your dealings outside of
the postings?

I mean its not too hard to get their email addresses (since they are on every
posting), so maybe in the future, you could just contact each other privately
concerning personal dealings, etc...

Does anyone have an extra Ursus Medicom they would like to sell me? Since the
new movie has come out I've totally gotten into the original stuff big time
getting a set of the magazines so far and now I want a few Medicom's. If not,
anyone have a complete Ursus Mego that they want to get rid of? Email me off

Thanks!

.html Hi Loc,

Here's a list of current REPUTABLE dealers stocking Medicoms.  Anyone else in the group that has good-guy vendors not on this list feel free to forward their info to me and I'll add them to the list.

As you may or may not know Medicom is only licensed to sell the figures in Japanese markets.

All non-Japanese dealers travel to that market to purchase the toys and
bring them back to the UK, AUS, the USA, and other countries.  That's why they are so pricey.

Many of these dealers may be carrying figures from the new movie as well, so you may want to ask them if they have any in stock.

Here's our current list of dealers:

Just like the movie, it's easy to try to compare this to Jerry Goldsmith's
groundbreaking and classic score to the original, but don't even try. Elfman
said he was never really a fan and had only seen the original once in his
life before taking it on (he did it for one reason: he does most of Burton's
films). As with the movie, accept it or don't accept it for what it is.

This music didn't hook me right away but it grew on me. Some of it is
really intense, it just keeps building and actually makes my speakers
rattle. Elfman said he cottoned to the images of the ape army, so it has
more a military "Beneath" feel than the otherworldly feel of the original
(oops! There I go comparing again. Sorry). I don't usually buy soundtracks
and basically I bought it because it's POTA. But I'm enjoying it. For the
record I bought it AFTER I saw the movie.

I didn't see her get branded. The only one I remember was Estella Warren
(which I thought was a pretty good scene). Linda's in the wagon. Wahlberg
asks where they are, she shakes her head and moves away. She's easier to
spot in the trailer. Also there's a good shot of Rick Baker smoking as the
wagon goes by. And the very first ape face we see, in both the trailer and
the movie (the one going "Rrrrar!", full face) is Terry Notary, who taught
them how to move like apes. Doesn't make sense for them to do a closeup of
an ape movement expert but he's probably used elsewhere as well.

    I saw the movie again.
It's starting to grow on me.
It's not bad once you get used to it. But a couple of thing occurred to me.
In the scene where Ari says to Davidson, "Perhaps we're not so different."
and he says to her, "No, we're very different. You only care for others."
That pretty much sums his character up in a nut shell. Which is basically
the same one he played in 3 Kings. Whether he wants to get the gold, or get
off the planet, it's all he cares about. Until the Iraqi's beat the crap out
of him. Maybe in the sequel the gorillas will kick the crap out of him and
he'll start to care about the folks he left behind. Also, when he says to
her, "Get me out of here and I'll show you something that will change your
world." I flashback to the final scene from Boogie Nights. Now that would
have been funnier than any of Paul Giamatti's onliners.

Yes, I did, at least in the main title music.  I don't know enough about
music to talk about it properly, but Elfman does have a sound during the main
title cue that sounds a lot like Goldsmith's use of the desending slide
whistle, and I think I can hear a variation on Goldsmith's PLANET theme.  The
only way I can describe that theme here is to ask if any of you can hear it
in the original score whenever the music goes like. . . dum. . .dum. . .dum .
. .dum.   NOT the notes that open the score, but the little tune that's heard
    every so often.

Anyway, I think Elfman could have done a better job with the score if he'd
had more time, but then that's true of the film overall.

Can't imagine them playing it in a nightclub though. Maybe the extended version is better?

    Did anyone else think so?

    Michael

Hey, when are you going to buy it, Mr. K?   Roddy talks about 'alot' of

He sure did.   And he was so right when he talked about how unbelivable it
was that Fox hadn't restored the original and re-released it to theatres.
Back in 1998 that's EXACTLY what they should have done.  Jeff Krueger saw the
restored print at the one anniversary showing they had for it in L.A. and. .
. well you tell them, Jeff.

But the point is that if Fox had made up a new ad campaign telling people
PLANET was back on the big screen, and made up some really cool TV
commercials, I'll bet PLANET would have made at least another $20 to $30
million in North America, maybe more!  Think of all the parents that saw it
as kids who would have brought their kids.  Everyone would have seen a better
movie than what they got with the 're-imaging' and Fox wouldn't have had to
    spend $100 million!

I like the fact that he said he was surprised no sequels had come out in
        thirty years.

When the idea of a re-make was brought up, he said that idea was stupid and
there was nothing wrong with the original.  If anything they should
re-release that for the big screen.

Remake stupid?  You had that pegged right Roddy!

No she did not get branded.

She shook her head in the wagon when Marky said "What is this place?".

She was also stretched up against the side of the wagon in the further away
shot that immediately preceded the close up.

She had a grey streak in her hair.

Did anyone else notice how the apes in the final scene were walking

Hey, when are you going to buy it, Mr. K?   Roddy talks about 'alot' of
stuff, including his remembrances of Arthur P. Jacobs and Franklin J.
Schaffner.  The people interviewing him sure could have been more
knowledgeable and organized, but McDowall's comments are so good you forget
all that.  Listening to him for nearly two hours was almost like having an
intimate conversation with him, and really made me forget how lousy I've been
feeling over the shortcomings of the new movie.  Oh, and wait till you hear
what he says about the idea of doing a remake of POTA!  How right he was.
Get out this weekend and get it!

        Should read:

They were on the floor below the Gorillas (did you see ANY gorillas on the
        ship?).

There were no gorillas in the cages. Nor were there any horses. So I guess
there were parts of the ship we missed seeing.

Well, I was willing to suspend my disbelief to the point of thinking there
were gorillas, tying in to the research and all, and they were there we just
        didn't see them.

I can't imagine why they'd have horses on board however, nor do I believe it
        crossed the writers' minds.

I brought the horse thing up to a couple of friends who saw the film too and
        they just started laughing.

I have a feeling Leo will spend the first part of the movie in his new
location, then he will return to Ari and friends. Sounds like everybody is
tied to the sequel if Burton returns, so it will probably take place on the
planet. We know how "Ape" movies like to reuse costumes and so forth. The
movie isn't a big enough hit where they would give Burton a blank check.

Well, I was willing to suspend my disbelief to the point of thinking there
were gorillas, tying in to the research and all, and they were there we just
        didn't see them.

I can't imagine why they'd have horses on board however, nor do I believe it
        crossed the writers' minds.

I brought the horse thing up to a couple of friends who saw the film too and
        they just started laughing.

.html There were Gorillas on the ship, that we never saw.  Howard Berger, of KNB Effects Group, actually wore one of the mountain gorilla suits and was filmed (and credited on screen right above Rick Baker's acting credit).  So they were there, just got cut out like most of the scenes that maybe could have explained the dang film.

How do you know which spot is which? Are they clearly marked?

        Matt

That would be rather hard to explain.  There's an area just west of the lake
where most of the 'trek' footage was shot.  It's much smaller than it looks
on film.  I stood on spots where the camera was (and I know that only because
I've seen the film so many times and can recognize the terrain) and I can
tell you that the Panavision lens reaaly makes things look vast.

You know the spot in the film where the astronauts have their 'water check'?
Well, when I was there in '87 there was a dirt road that ran right in front
of those boulders and you needed a four-wheel drive truck to get to it.  When
I visited again in '91 it was paved.  The whole area is getting very
'settled.'   There's a golf course now near the area of the gorge where
Taylor listens to Cornelius tell about the Forbidden Zone.

There's something else that's cool at Lake Powell.  Of course the lake was
made because of the Glen Canyon Dam (which unfortunately flooded for hundreds
of years what was a very beautiful canyon), well you can go on a tour of the
dam, and when you take the elevator down into the dam, the doors open unto a
tiled hall right out of BENEATH!   It's really cool.   It's a trip worth
        making sometime in your life.

This new film is beneath the "Planet of the Apes". As for publishing companies, they're part of the same corporate culture as everything else. Mickey Mouse for president in 2004! They probably feel that rep knows what the kids want.

that was a VIRUS???  eek!  what kind of virus??  what's weird is i have my outlook set to partially receive messages over 40K and when i saw that message i deleted it before receiving the rest of it cause i had a feeling it was something no good... although i have a mac and most viruses don't work on it :)  btw i saw pota again last night i noticed a lot more things!  at the beginning i noticed that when the captain of the oberaun (name of the big ship right?) was looking at the screen after cptn. leo went after his chimp there was a staticy transmission on his screen that was saying "mayday mayday!" ... it didn't look like captain leo though who was it???  was it the captain himself saying mayday mayday in the future because the storm was transmitting things back from all time???  hmmm.

        So Rory

        Are there any DELETED scenes?

        Michael

Unfortunately there are no deleted scenes, however there are shots you never
saw in PLANET, including a great crane shot that was cut from the hunt, and
in one of the featurettes there's Heston saying some lines while he's in the
cage with Nova (just before getting 'hosed') that were cut from the final
edit.   Lots of cool stuff like that.  In the outakes and dallies you'll also
be able to see on what dates in 1967 certain scenes were shot.

Maybe in a couple of years Fox will give us a Five Star DVD of PLANET that
will include more (then again maybe monkeys will fly out of my butt!).

        Should read:

They were on the floor below the Gorillas (did you see ANY gorillas on the
        ship?).

There were no gorillas in the cages.  Nor were there any horses.  So I guess
there were parts of the ship we missed seeing.

        Michael

Okay, the ship contained all sorts of DNA samples of various species and
after it crashed on the planet they started breeding these things.   Why?  I
don't know.   Oh, and actually the horses could talk, too, only they had
nothing to say (of course, of course).
