Well, I was hoping they'd rerelease them for marathons before the new one came out. They used to do that in the '80's when a sequel would come out to "Star Trek" or "Rocky". But it wasn't a sequel, it was a remake (f*** that "reimagining" double talk). The same reason they made life so difficult for the authors and shelved the video game probably apply. This is the "state of the art monkey" (a Leo quote) and we must move on to greater profitability.

Why not just rerelease instead of remake? I'm sure they figured it would do better than it did, maybe be the new "Star Wars". There's no accounting for taste.

Yeah, I saw the restored original at the 30th party and then last year at the Egyptian. It was awesome.

When the idea of a re-make was brought up, he said that idea was stupid and
there was nothing wrong with the original.  If anything they should
re-release that for the big screen.

Remake stupid?  You had that pegged right Roddy!

He sure did.   And he was so right when he talked about how unbelivable it
was that Fox hadn't restored the original and re-released it to theatres.
Back in 1998 that's EXACTLY what they should have done.  Jeff Krueger saw the
restored print at the one anniversary showing they had for it in L.A. and. .
. well you tell them, Jeff.

But the point is that if Fox had made up a new ad campaign telling people
PLANET was back on the big screen, and made up some really cool TV
commercials, I'll bet PLANET would have made at least another $20 to $30
million in North America, maybe more!  Think of all the parents that saw it
as kids who would have brought their kids.  Everyone would have seen a better
movie than what they got with the 're-imaging' and Fox wouldn't have had to
spend $100 million!

I know you said the crowd at the 30th was mostly older people, what about at
The Egyptian (also the title of a Fox film Leon Shamroy shot)?   What was the
size of the crowd and how was their reaction to this old, cheesy, camp film?

The 30th was invitation only. It was older because I guess it was people who worked on the movie or the documentary. But there were young folk, too. The Egyptian seemed to be people in their 20's and 30's. But L.A. is a film culture, it's not like real folk. Would people in Peoria bother to go to a theatre to see the original that's been on TV for years?

                                                                                  - - - Jeff K.

P.S.: The 30th did have a lot of young people outside, waiting for the stars to arrive, etc. That was nice. These films obviously still touch people.

Well, it's pretty much already been said by everyone else, over and over and over, so I won't re-hash it all again.

I was very disappointed, needless to say.  With all  we have learned (regarding writing and movie making) in 30 years since the original, I expected more.  Much more.

Rick's work was, of course, excellent, and eventhough they had an unrealistic build time, his studio came still through.  I feel Ari is not his fault.  I believe it was Burton's traditional attempt to get at least one character with a pale face, dark eyes,  and ratty hair (ala: Vincent, Beetlejuice, Scissorhands, Penguin, Chris Walken's headless horseman in Sleepy Hollow, etc., etc., etc.).  You know, his running theme of an anemic character that is "on-the-outside" and misunderstood by everyone.

I haven't jumped in on any of these webgroup convos, because it is a sore spot with me.  I go to the movies to escape and be entertained.  It bothers me to no end when I find myself rewriting every friggin scene with better choices while I'm watching a film.

I'll put this one on my list of "films that owe me time", so when I'm on my death bed, my last gasping breath will be the phone call to them demanding, "YOU OWE ME 90 Minutes FOR PLANET OF THE APES 2001, I WANT THEM BACK  NOW!!!"  In the meantime, I'm still trying to get the stink out of my clothes, hair, eyes, ears, and mouth.

I do hope it does well and inspires a sequel, though.  Good or bad, it's helping to keep the ape saga alive!!!

    There,  I've said my piece.

Very well said.   This movie simply wasn't made for the APES fans, unless all
they thought they needed to throw us was a few lame references to the old
fims.  From the reviews I'm reading on the Internet Movie Database -- and
there are over 500! -- 90% are not just negative, but angry.

No, they'll just put line "Rick Baker's makeup was excellent!" or maybe "I loved that ending!" (you and Roger Ebert have a lot in common).

But I agree we have to hope for it. If it wasn't for this remake, the documentary probably wouldn't have been made, nor the new DVD of it, Joe's book wouldn't have been published (after 15 years), etc. etc. And more good things could come if there's a sequel. "Star Wars" and "Star Trek" fans keep it going despite weak entries, why not us.

So when your friends ask what you thought of the movie, say , "No comment".

I can well imagine how you guys (and gals) feel. That was one of the things
that so depressed me after I saw the film -- here was something I can't
defend. That's why it's important that APES always have something
sophisticated going on "beneath" the surface -- without a serious allegorical
message, then it is just silly adventures among monkeys. Boulle wrote that

unevenly got it, even the TV show tried to say something important about the
stupidity of racism, but the makers of the new film not only didn't half
understand it (ala Dr. Milo), they weren't even trying very hard.

There were Gorillas on the ship, that we never saw.  Howard Berger, of KNB Effects Group, actually wore one of the mountain gorilla suits and was filmed (and credited on screen right above Rick Baker's acting credit).  So they were there, just got cut out like most of the scenes that maybe could have explained the dang film.

There were no gorillas in the cages.  Nor were there any horses.  So I guess
there were parts of the ship we missed seeing.

that was a VIRUS???  eek!  what kind of virus??  what's weird is i have my outlook set to partially receive messages over 40K and when i saw that message i deleted it before receiving the rest of it cause i had a feeling it was something no good... although i have a mac and most viruses don't work on it :)  btw i saw pota again last night i noticed a lot more things!  at the beginning i noticed that when the captain of the oberaun (name of the big ship right?) was looking at the screen after cptn. leo went after his chimp there was a staticy transmission on his screen that was saying "mayday mayday!" ... it didn't look like captain leo though who was it???  was it the captain himself saying mayday mayday in the future because the storm was transmitting things back from all time???  hmmm.

When did they say Semos killed  ALL the humans?  I assumed they maimed and mutilated and left them to die and or that some got away.

BTW, I continue also to ask why the humans didn't just shoot the apes when they began to go amok.  How smart were these scientists anyway that they passively allowed the simians to whip them into submission?

Unfortunately there are no deleted scenes, however there are shots you never
saw in PLANET, including a great crane shot that was cut from the hunt, and
in one of the featurettes there's Heston saying some lines while he's in the
cage with Nova (just before getting 'hosed') that were cut from the final
edit.   Lots of cool stuff like that.  In the outakes and dallies you'll also
be able to see on what dates in 1967 certain scenes were shot.

Maybe in a couple of years Fox will give us a Five Star DVD of PLANET that
will include more (then again maybe monkeys will fly out of my butt!).

Yeah and they had cows and stuff to slaughter and eat - not so silly when you think about it unless they have those Star Trek things that make food from thin air.....how else could they have eaten?

Also, I was wondering too about where the space station was - if it was so close to earth that Leo could get there in a pod in 5 seconds, why build a space station?

Okay, the ship contained all sorts of DNA samples of various species and
after it crashed on the planet they started breeding these things.   Why?  I
don't know.   Oh, and actually the horses could talk, too, only they had

      OK - I have a suggestion.

Let's ALL smoke drugs at about the point Rick Baker does (the movie is quite OK until about then) and see if it takes on a new dimension (like Pink Floyd tends to).

      Brian

Maybe they are a result of in-breeding (unless there were a LOT more humans on that ship, they sure did inter-breed).

That would explain ho the humans got less intelligent.....but if Semos killed all the humans, where did the humans come from?

Well, I was willing to suspend my disbelief to the point of thinking there
were gorillas, tying in to the research and all, and they were there we just
      didn't see them.

I can't imagine why they'd have horses on board however, nor do I believe it
      crossed the writers' minds.

I brought the horse thing up to a couple of friends who saw the film too and
      they just started laughing.

There is a longer "TV version " of "Battle" but I don't know how involved
      J. Lee was in it's editing. Perhaps "Battle" isn't a movie he wants to go
back to. But I've heard he's interested in a director's cut of "Conquest".
And, according to Joe Russo's book, he tried to buy the rights from Fox in
the '80's to do a new one for Cannon Films, purveyors of quality like "Rambo

        Brian

Well, according to Jeff Krueger, who got it off Movieheadlines.com (and who
knows where they got it), Fox wants "Planet of the Apes" to gross $200
million in just North America before they will greenlight a sequel.

As far as domestic plus worldwide grosses, yes, APES will do far above $200
million.  Then there's the DVD and Video sales and rentals later this year
        and into the next.

But I think we're counting our chimps too soon if we're all getting excited
that there will be a sequel in 2003.

It's still 'wait and see' time.

        HI THERE!!

I'm a dedicated APES fan in my 30s - based here in the U.K. APES had been part of my life since watching the series in 1974 - i have various collectables in my possession ranging from posters, comics to videos and autographs!

I'd very much like to meet female APE fans out there who can spread the word that APES STILL RULE!!!

Hear from you all pretty soon!!

If it hits $180 million that won't be too bad. They'll consider overseas, DVD, merchandising, etc. And hopefully they'll get it into their thick skulls that the big opening showed people wanted to see it (this wasn't a sequel like "Rush Hour 2", "Mummy Returns", or "MI:2", remeber; the only connection was some ancient movies) . The film dropped the ball.

I read in the new "Toy Shop" that "Shrek" merchandise is getting mixed results, and that's the top movie of the year. If kids decide the "Ape" stuff looks cool it might balance out. There's still hope (just please, oh please, don't pull the plug on the TV show DVDs!).

        I've just read this at Daily Variety.com. . . .

Director Tim Burton's POTA has spun $148 million after 17 days, and should
end up with about $180 million, said an executive at Twentieth Century Fox

And after eight years in development -- that's all she wrote!

Well, it looks like it's gonna be a hard climb to $200 million!

"Planet of the Apes" was number 5 this weekend with only $13.3 million.

I think we can all begin to wonder now if there will be a sequel.

        It doesn't look too good.

The magic number is $200 million (world wide) for a sequel.
So it does look very good.

It's still 'wait and see' time.

Well, don't hold your breath on that theory.
Apes Part II is as sure as my countdown for 2003 :o)

And as for the report: It does not say (US only)
This movie made more than the original comparing prices and yet it spawned 4 sequels. So it is clearly not (200 million US only)
That's just anti TIM BURTON POTA Sequel wishful thinking.

On the Internet Movie Database charts, the big hit worldwide of the summer isn't "Shrek". Here they are based on last week's numbers (numbers are for "all-time worldwide":

                               37. "Mummy Returns"  -  $410 million

                               40. "Pearl Harbor"        -    $385 million

                               46. "Shrek"                    -    $365 million

                               167. "Tomb Raider"       -     $217 million

                               176.  "Jurassic 3"          -

As of last week, "Apes" hasn't entered their charts but it will.
This stuff counts, especially Japan, that's why Ah-nuld still works even though his U.S. record is awful lately.

For sure: The last world release date for apes is somewhere in October. Not that it will beat the highest this year, but just enough for a good $300 - $350 million mark that will spawn a sequel. Mark my works on that.

They're not going to pull the plugs on the DVDs.  Fox probably expects

No, just concerned that people actually grow up and die not knowing anything else and thinking that there is nothing else.

Even the POTA movies make no reference anywhere to any other continent - it is just plain silly.

Even when I visited the US I got questons like "So how long did it take y'all to drive here form Australia?".  That was before Crocodile Dundee - then when I visited the next time it was "Do you really have to fight crocodiles to get your food?".

Jealous?  No, but there is a lot of pity involved.

Alex! Where's your site? I thought you were going to keep it on limited hours. How are we supposed to watch the clips? If Fox sees it down they'll decide "Apes" isn't popular anymore and not do a sequel. You want to be responsible for that? Hmmmm?                                                                - - - Jeff

Yes, that would have been good.  But NOT showing other nations lends itself to the possibility of some great sequel plots - and could justify the very EXISTENCE of an ape army (or the actual necessity for one).

Well, I remember as a kid after I saw CONQUEST, I wanted to see in the next
movie the apes revolting in other countries around the world.

Little did I know, Fox decided it wasn't in the budget.

I really think Box Office will head back up next week and I am positive the $200mil will be achieved in the US.  Even if they get close the sequel is a given me thinks.

        It's OK Jeff,

If they do pull the plug you can get yourself some of the Aussie videos and
transform them.....hang on, there are none left on the shelves and they
        have been deleted...........

        Michael

They're not going to pull the plugs on the DVDs.  Fox probably expects
Burton's POTA to be a huge Christmas Video, and the TV series will only help.

Stop teasing Jeff, you mean Aussie!!!

        Rock On!

Cougar (real name Mike) quit the group a while ago.  He e-mailed me privately
to tell me why.  Seems he couldn't stand all the talk about what this or that
meant in the new movie.  He hasn't seen the new movie and has no intention to
ever see it.  He's classic APES all the way.

He said he'll be back when the 'new movie talk' dies down.

I'll forward you're e-mail to him, Michael.  I'm sure he'll love reading it.
