I thought Wahlberg was terrible, really terrible. For me he was one
of the main factors that ruined the movie, I realise he was working
from a script written by a labotomised baboon, but there really is no
excuse for acting that wooden!

Yeah Sci-Fi is showing a lot of Batman's in a row lately.
As far as how Apes was doing this weekend.
I went to a 30 screen Mega-Shmegaplex Friday.
an 11:05 & 11:10 shows were listed on the computer.
But when I got there, there was only an 11:05 show.
Only maybe 10 people in the theater and when It was over,
I guy jumped on his phone to say, 'yeah, it was bad.'
How they managed to pander to low brow audiences,
and still have them not get the ending is a mystery that will
keep them guessing for years.

First of all, I think Wahlberg is a good actor, given the right director.
But he's not a hero type, he's an anti-hero. He should have played a Heston
type, instead they cast him as Ron Harper. But I think they would need him
to legitimize a sequel to the public and theatres. Hollywood is about

On the Internet Movie Database somebody left a review of the film that
mentioned that at the theatre this person saw the movie at several people
clapped at the end, but were shouted down with boos from most everybody else
and popcorn being thrown.  He said it was a better show than the movie.

This is one of the reason I won't go again.  Too embarrassing.

Hollywood is about. . . what, Jeff?   Fox didn't want an anti-hero.  Nowdays,
there's no way a studio would risk the audience not liking someone with
Taylor's cynical personality.

Studios are too scared to play it anything but safe and bland.  Makes me

It's OK I guess. I think "Batman" and "Batman Returns" are both OK, but
neither is close to a perfect film. I think Burton's POTA is a better Apes
film than either of those are a Batman film. I guess I just like Returns a
little better. "Batman: The Animated Series" is the definitive portrayl of
the character for me.

I do like Nicholsan's portrayl of the Joker (many do not), but I hated how
they tied the Joker into Batman's origin, I disliked Basinger as Vicky Vale
and the first film started the annoying precedent in the series of Batman
revealing his identity to everyone left and right (actually in this case it
was Alfred who spilled the beans. I sever out-of-character move for him). I
don't like the Joker getting killed either.

Wait, this is not the Batman discussion list?

I agree. I not only like to see more Apes, but better Apes. With the standard that Burton set, that shouldn't be difficult. I'd certainly like the see a new Apes movie where the positive reviews outweigh the negative ones.

Well put Bryan.

I for one would be very disappointed if Hollywood abandons POTA again.

Then it would be back to getting excited about the poteneial of the new plot in the comic book, until the comic books stop selling and get pulled too.

Remember in the 90s when they started new comics?  That was amazing for me.  The comics were crap, but POTA was suddenly being published again.

I would prefer a world WITH apes, albeit sub-par ones.

And on the subject of merchandise, very little has appeared in Australia (I have seen only the 5 standard Hasbro figures, Thade on Steed and Ken tells me the I-Zone cameras are out there, but I have not seen any).

So where is the mighty franchise?  Apparently in the US you can get the Band-Aids at Wal-Mart, there are also the Tower Records exclusives, but what else is there?  Anyone help me here?

One of the big licensees was Applause and they supposedly had some cool stuff at Toy Fair (bean bag characters, plastic statues, etc.) but had some shakeups this year and dropped it. There's definitely not much out there, which may add to the "loser" status with the public. Like it or not, the squeaky wheel gets the greased palm these days.

I agree. Since movies in general are crappy these days anyway, at least they could be crappy "Ape" movies.

It was supposed to read "Hollywood is about image". Sometimes I lose the last word, and I LIKE to have the last word, dammit. I think cynical is Hollywood's middle name and there's a lot of anti-heroes in movies, AND in Burton's movies. How many people Batman kill in "Returns"? Ed Wood dresses in women's clothes. E. Scissorhands skewered how many people he loved? For some reason, maybe time, they chose to keep Wahlberg bland, and he does not do straight-laced heroes well.

Sorry, Dan and Mez, but I wasn't dissing anyone or thing. Thanks to
Dan's unfortunate editing of my words, you miss the part where I
stated that I would welcome a DVD set of the shows. I was simply
stating that 25 years ago, I [me by myself] thought that "ALL" TV
production was crap, not just the POTA show.

All these years later, I sorta kinda regret that I didn't get into
it. I do have a pack of the Topps trading cards that I held onto.

I did keep up with the animated series, though. ;-)

Best Wishes!

Haven't we been through this before?   Folks, I spent over six years

They couldn't have cared less.  Fox has a love/hate relationship with APES

Where am I going with this?  I don't know, except that I'm sick of being a

Only joking 'J' with my selective editing, I was really just trying
to get across that a lot of apes fans dismissed the tv show wheras a

"A Date With Judy" was never an episode or a script. It was a new name in the novelization for the episode "The Unearthly Prophecy". In Joe Russo's book there's an interview with "Apes" Animated creator Doug Wildey who says he wrote 3 stories for later episodes that were never filmed. But there's no unused episodes.

I'm not new to the Apes series in anyway, even though it may seem
that way from how old I am (15) compared to how old some other people
are of this group. You see, my older brothers (the oldest being 32)
were really into Planet of the Apes when they were younger, and they
still are. Now, when I was born ('85) they passed a lot of knowledge
of Planet of the Apes onto me, and a lot of Planet of the Apes
merchandise. :) Anyway, here I am today, 15 years old, the 'sci-
geek kid' at my school. Haha.

I liked Apes 2001 so much... I have no clue why. Maybe it's because
Burton is my favorite director. I thought General Thade was a
badass, and all of the other characters had great developement, too.
I love how the story took a twist when Leo found out how life started
on that planet when he reached the Oberon again. Really, I thought
it was a brilliant movie, but by saying that, you may think I don't
know anything about the older ones... but I do. I assure you, I live
for the Apes series, and nothing is going to stop me. :)

comes from and if it's a boot.

Let us all hope the DVDs sell very well, after all the new movie makes the
original now look like the f**king "Citizen Kane" of SF films -- AND I MEAN
    IT!!!!!

I haven't been through half the rigamarole you've endured with this,
Rory -- only the tv series crap since April -- so I'm not too tired
to be pissed off. There's nothing that yanks my chain faster than
game-playing at fan expense. And if FOX is raising the bar again on
this DVD release that's exactly what they're doing...playing games.

If given the choice between believing FOX Marketing VP Straddon
(whose chat transcript I think you pointed us to on the 16th) or
this 'Tanisha' person, I'll go with the VP. In the meantime, the new

Agree. I liked AI up until the time she leaves him in the woods, then it
became Pinochio finds toy land type a-thingy. Except for the scenes where
the AI's are being used for target practise, etc, that was kind of
entertaining (but there were no suprises there either).
The end was kinda neat (AI's are now the only beings on the planet and the
ship they travel in is just damn cool.) up to a point. Then it felt like a
Pinochio meets his frosty fairy godmother tale.
The movie could have been very good, and instead it was more curious and odd
    and...groan!
    Oh well.

Allright, forget that. I just checked Alex's site and got all of the info.
This is coming out on November 20 (a week before my birthday). The price
point is $49.95 (I bet it will be in the $30s on sale during the first week
of release). The set will be in mono (aaarrrghhh!) and extras include TV
spots and a still gallery (yippee!).

I don't mean to be a spoilsport and I am happy the thing is finally being
released, but having it in mono is extremely frustrating. I don't know much
about the technical aspects of this kind of stuff, but would surround sound
be that difficult to pull off? And the extras seem a bit skimpy. I would at
least like to see the McDowell interviews from the Sci-Fi Chanel and some
more of the James Naughton footage from BEHIND.

It would cost them around $10,000.00 an episode to convert the original mono
to stereo, and it wouldn't be all that great anyway.  I've got DSP modes in
my Pioneer AV reciever that will spread out the mono sound to all five
channels, and if I raise the center channel level so dialogue sounds fairly
      centered, it sounds pretty good.

I suggest you experiment with your audio equipment to find out if you can do
      the same.

Now. . . . Just be thankful the damn thing is coming out!!!!

Hi, my name is Tom and I've been lurking on this POTA group.

Where did you get your info about "A Date With Judy"? Do
you have the Return to the POTA #4 book? I had thought it
was a script that never got made. I thought "The Unearthly
Prophecy" was in the Return to the POTA #1 book?

      Thanks-

I saw the new film this afternoon (I was waiting until the school holidays

      Oh well.

I LOVE "Legend of Hell House".  In fact, Rory, I've had that date marked into my calendar book for a few months now.  I doubt it will have many special features, but it will be nice to have a DVD replacement for the tape that I've almost worn out.

I should be getting "Batman" from Amazon today or tomorrow.  I'll let you
know how it is.  Also, on September 2nd, Fox releases on DVD a great Roddy
McDowall flick "The Legend of Hell House."  You might want to get that, too.

Uh...actually it was reported on the IMDB that Burton would
absolutely not do a sequel because the studio made the project so
      difficult to complete.

Yeah!!!  The movie will look and sound so much better than your old tape.

This is great. Thanks Alex. What were the clips of the show in "Behind the POTA"? Were they mono? If the quality is the same as the documentary I'll be a happy aper. It looked great. "Escape" is in mono and I probably watch that more than any "Ape" DVD. I was hoping for interviews or something but I didn't expect them to bend over backward. The price is right.
