But anyway, there's a lot less people in the UK, and even fewer SUCKERS!
Also, they got advance word-of-mouth from US.

"A Date with Judy" is in book #1. The books follow the continuity of the
series and are also helpful in figuring out the order of the show ("POTA
Revisited" got the order wrong; Eric Greene's book got the order right
'cause I told him what it is).

"POTA Revisited" makes up for it though in it's interview with creator Doug
Wildey, who talks about 3 episodes he planned to wrap up the cartoon that
were never filmed::

" In episode 13 the humans finally get to the point where they can actually
attack something as an organised force. Show 14 would have them organizing
to hit the apes where it hurts, which is the munitions dumps and airplane
fuel tanks. Show # 15 was where there would be a big fight - how the hell I
would have done it I don't know because you can't hurt anybody - and the
final episode is where they blow up the ammunition dumps, the gas, and the
whole thing. I basically brought it to the point where there was an uneasy
truce between apes and humans where they set up in the forbidden zone; this
kind of truce thing where the two leaders meet and we wrap up the show .
Maybe, just maybe, they could've learned from each other".

Personally, I prefer how the series actually ended, with Bill and Cornelius
going to the Ice Apes to pick up the book that will prove humans were once
in charge. It leaves the ending to the imagination.

Hey, I'm happy for everyone that the movie is making it's money back and
more, but have read read most of the reviews, Alex?  Do you even care?

As for me, I thought the film was terrible, and I feared it was going to
bomb.  But, people like APES so it's done well.  That doesn't make the film
any better in my eyes.  The movie could be doing "Titanic" numbers and I'd
still think it sinks.

I am really happy that you're happy, Alex.  I wish I was happy, too, but that
movie would have had to have been a lot better.

No, it's not all bad, it's just really bad.  Let's have a roll call here.
Who says the new movie was good, who says okay, who says mediocre, and who
says terrible?

And don't let books and DVDs and $160 plus millions sway you.  In the long
run that won't mean a thing.

Of the 4 you mentioned I'd say "OK". But how about this: what was the audience reaction where you saw it. My audience wasn't vocal negatively but they weren't exactly cheering either. I'd say the best reactions were for Limbo and when Pericles lands and Attar thinks it's Semos.

When I saw it, two couples walked out about halfway through, a man probably
in his fifties a few seats down from me moaned at several lines then toward
the end got up and left in disgust.  The entire audience laughed when
Pericles landed and laughed again when Attar said, "Semos."  But mostly I
think it bored just about everyone.  I was miserable.  I couldn't believe how
bad it was.  Ari was ALL WRONG.  The make-up wasn't right and either was the
character.  I also couldn't believe how bad the dialogue was.  I was with the
movie, thinking it wasn't too bad, right up until the end of the hunt, then
the film went right into the dumper.  It was like it was a joke.  It was too
inept to even be considered a real movie.  Perhaps my disappointment has
warped my perception of, and I do want to see it again to see if it's really
as bad as I thought, but that'll have to wait until I have it on DVD.
Perhaps seeing it reduced to just a five-inch disc will put it in its proper
perspective, and also maybe the surround sound and some of the extras will be
nice.  Also the picture hopefully will be brighter.  In the theatre some of
those apes' faces were nothing but black.

Does this mean that the same 8 Japanese POTA Kubrick sets will start selling
in the USA? I thought these weren't even available in Japan anymore?

I already have the sets and they are very cool. Some nice things about
the Kubricks are that (1) they include 4 characters not included in
the 6" Medicoms: Mendez, mutant soldier, Julius (a civilian gorilla suit!),
and Brent. (2) you can swap heads and make new characters such as
Astronaut Brent. (3) the accessories are nice, such as the horses
and cages. (4) the Kubrick SWAT sets make nice stand-ins for riot
police to go with the slave apes from Conquest. In fact their shields
are identical to the POTA set. I also have the Star Wars bootlegs.

No, it's not all bad, it's just really bad.  Let's have a roll call here.
Who says the new movie was good, who says okay, who says mediocre, and who
says terrible?

And don't let books and DVDs and $160 plus millions sway you.  In the long

The U.S. import Kubricks will be limited to 4 sets: the Statue of Liberty,
the gorillas with wagon, Zauis, Zira, Cornelius with Lawgiver and the set of
gorillas. They will be $14.95 each. But if you get them from dealers they
will probably be marked up so you'll probably end up paying close to the
others anyway.

P.S.: Good idea with the SWAT, those are cheapies. Also if you put Zira's
head on "Conquest" Caesar it becomes Lisa.

Yeah, it seems like the Pericles landing is a winner. The audience also seemed concerned when Thade batted Pericles around. But don't go badmouth'n my Ari. She was the only character I connected to and I suspect Burton as well. At first I didn't, I thought she was too cliched but H.B. Carter pulled it off. I have two Hasbro figures, Attar that I bought before the movie came out because he was the best one, and Ari, which I got after the movie. Just so I can hug her and tell her everything's going to be alright. Ari is also the only TV Guide cover I bought.                                                      - - - - Jeff

Of the 4 you mentioned I'd say "OK". But how about this: what was the
audience reaction where you saw it. My audience wasn't vocal negatively but
they weren't exactly cheering either. I'd say the best reactions were for
Limbo and when Pericles lands and Attar thinks it's Semos.

- - - - Jeff

Alright now, enough picking on this Tanisha person.  It's not her fault if

there is no Return #4 book

but there is a tv series #4 book lord of the apes

date with judy was considered to be the unused script however someone pointed it out that the script was sort of used but in a different title etc.

To my knowledge there is no return book 4. I have return book 1 and just
started reading it. "A date with Judy" is the third story in the book and the
"Unearthly Prophecy" is not in it at all so I assume that is the "date with
    Judy" story.

    >says terrible?

I thought POTA 2001 was okay, but it depends on what you compare it
with. Compared with most other movies that came out this year it's
a great movie, and I've been starved for new POTA material since 1975.
But, it is not nearly as good as any of the previous Apes movies or
TV episodes. At best it ranks up there with a cartoon episode. Although
in some minor ways (e.g. ape costumes) it's the best Apes movie,
it has hardly any of the anticonservative political satire which makes
the previous POTA material so fascinating.

While the movie was better than I was expecting, my expectations were low
because I don't like any of Tim Burton's other movies except Batman.
The main thing wrong with the movie is the quality of the writing. People
rightly expect any movie called "Planet of the Apes" to have much, much
better writing. If they do another picture I won't mind if they get a new
director and all new actors/characters, but the most important thing of
all is to get a better quality of writers.

    [spoilers follow]

    Negatives:
The astronaut character was underacted, the Thade character was overblown,
and the Ari character looked dumb. The ending would have been good if
they kept it just like the book but they went too far putting Thade on the
    Lincoln memorial.

    Positives:
Visually it was a good film, and my opinion may improve when I see it
again on video. Plotwise, the movie also has one thing that I've always
wanted to see in a POTA film which is have the humans fight back against
    the apes.

Compare that with the TV series: In two of the 14 TV episodes Virdon
and Burke prevented an attack on the Ape regime. Once when a human leader
was stockpiling chemical weapons to use against the apes and another
where a female chimpanze was going to launch a coup by bombing the
High Council from air. In the short term Zaius and Urko were probably
better off having Virdon and Burke running around preaching nonviolence
and preventing civil wars and coups against them.

As for me, I thought the film was terrible, and I feared it was going to bomb. But, people like APES so it's done well. That doesn't make the film any better in my eyes. The movie could be doing "Titanic" numbers and I'd still think it sinks.

Hey, we all wish it was great, but I still think it will be all right, if the sequels get progressively better. Sort of the old series in reverse. Sure some moments were not good. But I still liked it better than Battle, and probably Conquest as well. I'll go again! And more, if it will help the Ape cause.

It took me about two months of checking and rechecking to finally get all 4
tv series and all 3 return cartoon books but I finally got them. Tv series
book 4 is really hard to find and I only found it by ordering return book 3
and they offered book 4 to me too. The best place to get the books is
www.abe.com which is the advanced book exchange. It's an online host to
bookstores around the world. You can find virtually any book ever published
here. That's where I got all of them except Return books 1 and 2 which I got
off ebay. Like I said though you have to check often to see if they have it
on abe or ebay. I just started reading return book 1 and it's really good. I
want to read the story then watch the cartoon that the story is about since I
have the cartoons but haven't watched them yet. Amazon.com's zshops also have
the books. Don't over pay though! If you find a book and it's over 20 dollars
I wouldn't get it and just wait it out like MLCCOUGAR told me to do and you
will eventually find it cheaper. Good luck!

You know the only other offerings Fox has in the top 20 are Dolittle 2 and Deep End. I just saw that one. Beautifully photographed, great acting, good writing. And even though it won Sundance and Caans, and Ebert gave it thumbs up . . . I wouldn't see it again if you paid me. I'll go see Apes again instead!

This reminds me. I saw a TV ad for "Rat Race" where they had a quote from a critic saying it's the funniest comedy ever. Quite a statement, though I'm not sure how you would measure "funniest ever". Kinda makes the "Ape" ads a model of restraint.                                                                     - - - Jeff

Well, I'll bet Alex is glad APES is kicking CAPTAIN CORELLI's ass, and JP 3's

They were heading out to Japan and Australia and KISS (aka Gene Simmons and
Paul Stanley) and Peter could not agree on his contract so they went without
him. They got Eric Singer (the last non-makeup drummer before Criss returned)
to put on the Cat makeup and costume. It was a real slap in the face to hard
    core KISS fans.

You thought Burton had a tight schedule? "Harry Potter" is currently being
edited and the sequel is being prepared to film this fall. Both are from the
same director. Reason being given is they don't want the lead actor's voice
to break before it's filmed. But it's all for the art.

    It was a money thing.
They aren't above replacing anyone, since the first time he and Ace left.
But you have to remember, he's pretty old to be playing the drums all night.
It may have been a graceful way for him to bow out without just quitting
    outright.

Hopefully so that we can see the film that the remake should have been.

On a similar theme - I've heard an audio snippet of Heston's blurb about man
being the missing link between apes and human beings, or something like
that - can someone remind me where this is taken from? Is it from an
out-take or a trailer or what?

Okay, I'm catching up on old emails here, but I don't think anyone replied
to this... the Paul Woods book is in shops now, along with the unofficial
companion and Revisited. It's the "Legend of the Planet of the Apes" book
that's been delayed, which is a shame since that's the one I was most
    looking forward to!
