I guess for the same reason they don't evolve
beyond the point they do here on earth. You want Mr. ED the talking horse? Go
rent the video. (just kidding)
These apes were geneticly engineered...were you
paying attention at all to the movie? "Geneticly Cromozone Inhansed". As Leo put
it.

Today makes 7 for me.
And I was gratified to see I was not alone. There were about 30 others watch
as well. When you consider that there are only about three other movies that
have had a bigger opening day. And other block busters like Shrek and The
Mummy Returns have been at the box office for weeks and weeks, it really
hasn't done badly for it's self. There may be a sequel yet! Let's just get

They started with Eohippuses and bred them up.

I fully agree with you.
At least with some more depth in the characters.
The story was fast pased and never a daul moment for me, but that's no sub for
character depth.
At least the next time around I want to know what
size underwear everyone is using!
Geeez, it that too much to ask?

Maybe before it was the planet of the apes it was the planet of the horses.
But I think there were horses in the new film simply because there were
horses in the original, and the new movie really is just a pale copy of the
original with a few changes.
Oh no, there I go again. I guess I'll be hearing from Alex now.

Hmmm....I guess it is his choice to be homophopic (if he is), but it
would also be his choice to be homicidal - not a good choice in either
scenario.
I
never heard any of those statements and I certainly would not agree with

No,
there is nothing wrong with being a devout Catholic - but there is something
wrong with thinking that being a devout Catholic means you have to say bad
things about homosexuals. I mean Jesus was a radical in his time, and
whether he was the son of god or not, he taught that above all things we should
treat one another as we expect to be treated.....and that's just plain common

So

been apes and humans native to the planet. The new arrival apes perhaps
interbred with them (Hasslein's nightmare come true) helping along the
species. The movie asks us to swallow a lot more than that.

The legends keep leaving us. To
many, former "New Yorker" critic Pauline Kael (retired: 1991) was the best
American movie critic ever and considered her reviews as much self-expression
and art as many of the movies she reviewed. She gave a positive review to the
original "Apes" at a time when sci-fi was looked down on and perhaps helped it
with the "high brow " crowd. For myself, I was honored to be listed just a
couple lines below her in the "Bibliography " of Eric Greene's book. She died
yesterday at 82.

Movies, like music, are only percieved as being as good, or bad, as most

Oh I hate to toot my own horn, but:
"Jeeperes Creepers"
-
$15.8 Mil at the box office for the weekend.
-
Largest Labor day film opening EVER!!!
-
And we pushed PLANET OF THE APES out of the top ten!!!!
Oh, the irony. Hate me if you will.
Brian
PS: Of course next week we'll get pushed out of the top ten
by "Revenge or the Rugrats' or something as admirable.

According to movieheadlines.com,
Tim Roth says he'd be glad to return as Thade if Burton comes back. He added
there's a chance Burton would return despite his recent comments. Mr. Roth
suspects our savior was just exhausted and tired of talking to the press.
Yeah, but does he get the point? We

Nah Brian, it had to happen sooner or later. Better a film you worked on
than something like Rugrats. Rush Hour 2 seems unshakable in the # 2 slot.
Maybe you can knock it down to 3rd. And Apes pulled a respectable # 9 in the
dailies for Labor Day with over $900.000. And after a little more than a
month is already in the top 100 of all time. Considering the bad word of
mouth and mixed reviews, I remain optimistic for a sequel. <.html

One of the reasons for this is because it's like the only film Fox has out
right now. Notice that it's still on over 1,500 screens. It was on over
3000 screens for three weeks! It's basically being pushed to 180 million.

If we get a good script, it's more likely to be an accident than
something Burton insists upon. I don't think we have to have
Burton nor any of the POTA 2001 actors back. What will make or
break the franchise is the script.

Alex, I know you don't understand this, but ALL I really care about is how
good is the film from a critical standpoint. Now I know that if something
you love is dismissed by the critics you're attitude is just "What do they
know." But, I think they know something, and I go along with it. There are
many films I look forward to right up to opening day, but if I see most of
the reviews are bad -- I skip it -- like "Jeepers Creepers." It got some
really bad ones. But that's okay -- I'll rent damn near anything on DVD!

before, but I saw that now they have two VHS copies of the 30th Anniversary

out!!!! Three cheers for the new film -- at least it's getting people
interested in seeing the original again! Strangely this Blockbuster had
three copies of the "Behind" special edition DVD and none of them were

Oh!!! That reminds me! The new
"Entertainment Weekly " has a thing about what to do with your (American) tax
rebate. If you're a single income resident, they recommend a DVD player and a
box set of either "The Godfather" or "POTA:Evolution". Let's see them say
Burton's flick and "The Godfather " in the same breath.

OH!!! That reminds me. I was in the
other of two Blockbusters near me this weekend. Now this Blockbuster
has never had the original APES in stock before, but I saw that now they
have two VHS copies of the 30th Anniversary edition (with the cover I
love!!) and one DVD. All three were checked out!!!!
Three cheers for the new film -- at least it's getting
people interested in seeing the original again!
Strangely this Blockbuster had three copies of the
"Behind" special edition DVD and none of them were checked out.
Somebody there must have thought they were buying a movie getting
three copies like that.

I've heard Elfman has only seen the original once and isn't a fan. He did
alright by the score.
If you don't have "Starlog" yet you should look around. The issue's almost
over with.
What did Mark Altman think of "Apes"?
This week the "Apes" DVD was #4 at my local Tower (down a notch) and the
VHS was #5.
- - - - Jeff
This is what Elfman says in FSM. . . . "Although Elfman has admitted to
being a fan of genre movies, he's the first to admit that he never became
pert of the cult that grew up around 'Planet of the Apes' and its four
sequels. 'This is a movie that I saw as a kid and I liked it, but I didn't
think anything more about it, I wasn't crazy about it. It wasn't like 'The
Exorcist' and '2001' where I saw those movies probably six or seven times
when they came out. 'Apes' I saw and it was fun, but I really didn't want to
revisit it. I never saw it again until I was on my way to New York to spot
the movie with Tim, and I popped a DVD in and watched it. I really enjoyed
it, and definitely one of the more intriguing and interesting parts of the
movie was Jerry Goldsmith's score."
And he has more to say, but you can read it yourself later. Mark Altman did
not comment. He's more worried about "Enterprise" right now. I guess APES
is pretty much history, except it's still making money and will continue to.

I think that Burton's film is actually a 'better' version or 're-telling' of

maybe Brent's search for Taylor along similar lines. No way am I watching
the new film before CONQUEST though, IMO best of the original 'sequels'.

Fox was the #3 studio, thanks to those reJacobsed flicks POTA and Dr.
Dolittle. Fox got 12.8% of the market. #1 was Universal with 17.4% ("Mummy
Returns", "Jurassic Park", "American Pie 2" and "The Fast and the
Furious" - - - quite a lineup). #2 was Disney (13.4%) thanks to "Pearl
Harbor" and "The Princess Diaries".
Fox seems pleased with "Apes", especially the opening, which was the
biggest in Fox history. Fox chairman Jim Gianopulos said, "It was a
tremendous feat for both Tim Burton and Dick Zanuck". Jim went on to thank
Alex for seeing the movie so often. OK, I made that last part up.
"Apes" just made $3.9 million in Spain, the biggest movie opening ever
there.

Hey Michael,
Russell Crowe was actually born in New Zealand. Nicole Kidman in Hawaii
( just in case she was your next back up.)
Best,

I don't know if he's homophobic

devout Catholic. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
