Hello,
I would like to nominate the original 1968 version of PLANET OF THE APES for the National Film Registry, as I believe the film was very reflective of the American social and political climate of the time. What sets this film apart from others is that the political/social allegories are worked into the film rather than forced upon the viewer. You have to think about what you're seeing, and often the subtext becomes more apparent upon repeated viewings. I believe these elements make PLANET OF THE APES "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" as your website states.
I fully support any efforts that preserve American film heritage, and I thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Everyone here should just copy the above and send it out to:
sleg@...
It's about time PLANET OF THE APES (1968) was on the National Film Registry.
Thanks Chris.

Oh they'll have made a few bucks. The
question is, will they be willing to do the sequel? The second
question is will it be better, or worse?
Well I would say yes there will be, now
whether I will be part of it or not is still very questionable as far as web
site-ing. I am totaly burned out from the web and I really don't know nor
really care to continue.
But here's a bit of good news for us
waiting for the official DVD.
This is really going to be
great.
Enjoy.
Best.

What was the rush this time?
Please explain WTF you're talking about, Al?
Did it have to get made before the war started?
I don't think they had any inside info there.
They had thirty years to thik about this one.
Seriously for the last ten years and then once they
get the greenlight the pushed for a summer '01 release!
Now, what make you think they won't do the same thing?
They'll drag their feet scratching their heads and then rush it again!
Well, I think you have to understand how crazy the studios are. Once a top executive 'greenlights' something, they set a release date. I think the idea is that they need to get the product out fast, and prove their worth, or they'll get replaced. The top offices at studios are very much revolving doors.
It's just another one of the things that make most Hollywood movies 'junk food for the eyes and ears.'

Great movies are accidents.
Boy, is that true! Here's a quote from the Jan. 2001 issue of "Video Watchdog" when they reviewed the POTA DVDs:

Someone said 2003 for the sequel. Again, that's a tight schedule. However,
I would grit my teeth and say it would be cool if they could make that, the
40th Anniversary of the book. Especially if they take their cue from the
film's ending and do a modern society. If it weren't for that I would say
don't even try, make it 2004.

Well, if they're going to try for 2003, they'll have to announce within the next six months. Maybe they're waiting to see how it does on Video and DVD.

I dunno Jeff.
I'd sure like to agree with you.
But Fox has proved time and again they are no brain-trust.
I'm sure there are some smart people there, and they may listen to them.
But then they go ahead and do whatever stupid thing the were going to do.
The new box is all the proof you need!
I just saw the new Fox movie "Don't Say a Word." Slick, but not too deep. Seems to be the pattern at Fox these days.

I gotta say I really liked A.I.
Maybe I am going soft but I thought it was brilliant. There was a very
obvious Kubrick influence and it was a very Spielberg movie too. Lots of
people were reduced to tears.
It was chilling to see the 2 World Trade Centre buildings. Amazing, but

The people
working at Fox Video just aren't knowledgeable APES' fans. Twenty-three
years ago I should have moved to California and tried to get a job with them,
but I had no idea then that APES was in the kind of hands it's in. At
least the Aussies had Ken "Taylor!" (as if Nova were saying it). As for
the Statue of Liberty on the PLANET cover, I've talked about this before, but
I was just thinking the other day that we really should blame the Fox of
1969-70. I think it was a mistake to start BENEATH with the ending of
PLANET. That classic final image should only be seen at the end of the
original. But then, I don't think anyone had an idea PLANET was a
classic back then; it was just one of Fox's bigger hits.

Thanks for the tip.
I figured as much and decided against rushing to see it.
I'd like to see some on the kung fu thrillers . . .
The One with Jett Lee and Iron Monkey come to mind.
Other than those I'm content to wait and see what they

Forever Linked to Bigfoot: John Chambers Passes Away
by Loren Coleman
John Chambers, who once created a Bigfoot carnival prop and was rumored to
be behind the Patterson-Gimlin Bigfoot footage, died of diabetes
complications, 25 August 2001, at the Motion Picture and Television Fund
retirement home in Woodland Hills. He was 78.
For years, a rumor had circulated that Chambers, famed Academy Award-winning
Hollywood special effects man, manufactured the suit allegedly worn by the
Bigfoot pictured in the famed Patterson-Gimlin Film which spawned renewed
interest in the creature.
The controversy peaked on the thirtieth anniversary of the filming when
press accounts from around the world recycled this rumor without benefit of
a personal interview with Chambers. Typical of the headlines is one that
appeared in London's Sunday Telegraph for October 19, 1997: "Hollywood
admits to Bigfoot hoax." The article, timed to the anniversary of reads in
part: "A piece of film, which for 30 years has been regarded as the most
compelling evidence for the existence of Bigfoot, the North American
'abominable snowman', is a hoax, according to new claims. John Chambers, the
man behind the Planet of the Apes films and the elder statesman of
Hollywood's Œmonster-makers¹, has been named by a group of Hollywood make-up
artists as the person who faked Bigfoot.
"In an interview with Scott Essman, an American journalist, the veteran
Hollywood director John Landis...said: 'That famous piece of film of Bigfoot
walking in the woods that was touted as the real thing was just a suit made
by John Chambers.' He said he learned the information while working
alongside Mr Chambers on Beneath the Planet of the Apes in 1970."
But the truth of the matter apparently lived beyond the Hollywood rumor
mill.
On October 26, 1997, California Bigfoot researcher and nurse Bobbie Short
interviewed Chambers, then living in seclusion in a Los Angeles nursing
home. The make-up artist insisted he had no prior knowledge of Roger
Patterson or Bob Gimlin before their claimed Bigfoot encounter on October
20, 1967. He also denied having anything to do with creating the suit, and
blamed the Hollywood rumor mill. Chambers went on to say that he was ³good²
but he ³was not that good² to have fashioned anything nearly so convincing
as the Bluff Creek Bigfoot.
As stated in the press at the time, the well-known movie director John
Landis claimed that Chambers not only made the Patterson suit but helped
make the film. For just as long people have pointed to Landis as the one
from whom they heard the story, not Chambers. But Chambers himself said the
only Bigfoot he made was the "Burbank Bigfoot," a large stone prop intended
to imitate a real Bigfootlike creature and used for a carnival tour. Some
even speculated that Chambers was involved with constructing the Minnesota
Iceman, shown in Midwestern state and stock fairs by Frank Hansen, beginning
in 1967. The Burbank Bigfoot, however, appears to be the only "Bigfoot"
Chambers ever created.
During his 30-year career, Chambers worked on several movies and television
shows, including TV's "The Outer Limits," "The Munsters," "Lost in Space"
and "Mission Impossible." Chambers was responsible for putting the pointy
ears on "Star Trek's" Mr. Spock. His makeup and prosthetics film credits
included "National Lampoon's Class Reunion" (1982), "Halloween II" (1981),
"The Island of Dr. Moreau" (1977), "SSSSSSS" (1973), "Battle for the Planet
of the Apes" (1973), "Superbeast" (1972), "Conquest of the Planet of the
Apes" (1972), "Slaughterhouse-Five" (1972), "Escape from the Planet of the
Apes" (1971), "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" (1970), "Planet of the Apes"
(1968), "The List of Adrian Messenger" (1963), and "Showdown at Boot Hill"
(1958).
John Chambers is best known, however, for designing the anthropoids in the
original "Planet of the Apes." When he worked on "Planet of the Apes" in the
1960s, Chambers recalled in a recent Assoicated Press interview how he spent
hours at the Los Angeles Zoo doing research.
"It was the best way I could think of for capturing the elastic facial
expressions of the apes," he said.
The Associated Press noted that his preparation led him to develop a new
type of foam rubber that was easier to work with than the material commonly
used at the time. He also created facial appliances that could be attached
to actors' faces to form primate features. For his efforts he became only
the second makeup artist to receive an honorary Academy Award. A competitive
category for makeup was established in the 1980s.
Considering the timing of the filming of the Patterson-Gimlin footage in
1967, many skeptics of the film naturally looked to Chambers as the source
of the fully-haired upright primate in the film. Critics of the film's
debunkers would later point out that the original "Planet of the Apes"
costumes were not full-body suits, but mostly rigid facial and upper torso
gear.
Intriguingly, Chambers' first of only a few acting appearances was in a 1971
movie about a California Bigfoot that terrorized co-eds. The film,
"Schlock" was directed by John Landis, who also played the film's very thin
Bigfoot. Chambers played the National Guard Captain in the film. Chambers'
student, Rick Baker, who one day would create Harry in "Harry and the
Hendersons," did the makeup and created the Bigfoot in Schlock.
John Chambers' name will forever be linked to Bigfoot, no matter the
realities behind the rumors.

I think maybe as a parent I see movies through different eyes now. I would
have probably dismissed AI as sentimental garbage years ago but there is
just something about being a parent that really brings that movie home.
Being a parent also showed me all the Star Wars sequels and Ep1 through
different eyes.
When I first saw the sequels I remember thinking "How can I take Yoda
seriously when he is talking in Grover's voice?". I thought all the
monsters were becoming very Sesame Street. The Ewoks were OK because they
reminded me of H Beam Piper's Fuzzy Sapiens (and the Little Fuzzies reminded
me of little chimps when I read it - I always wanted so badly to have pet
ape but they were illegal to own in Australia...which is good really in
hindsight).

Rory,
I
thought "Eyes Wide Shut" was an excuse for Kubrick to masturbate while
filming. I got no deep message except that maybe contemplating betraying
your partner can lead to more danger than one ever bargained for. I will
never understand why the movie would end with Nicole's shallow suggestion.
Maybe Kubrick just wanted those of us looking for a deeper meaning to know for
sure there was none - just expensive porn without the necessary close ups.
I would love it if anyone can give me some phlosophical depth from that movie
because I felt robbed!
What
were the last 2 movies he did prior to that? Was it Full Metal Jacket and
Barry Lyndon?
I have
recently re-viewed Lolita, Dr.Strangelove, 2001, A Clockwork Orange and the
Shining - these were all brilliant. I bought the collection on DVD which
contained all the movies mentioned here except Dr Strangelove. Have I not
mentioned any?

Michael
I thought the first half of "Full Metal Jacket" was great (not brilliant, though), but that the movie fell apart after that. Kubrick's great war film is "Paths of Glory." Check that out if you've never seen it. "The Shining," I think, is close to being crap. I don't understand why he found this material interesting. He tries to make something more of it, but it just doesn't work for me. Elements of it scared me when I saw it when it was new, but a recent viewing on DVD left me cold (pun intended). I like "Barry Lyndon," and think it's very good. I'm not going to go on any further, except to say that Kubrick was once my favorite director, but I've cooled on him. He WAS brilliant.

Highly doubtful, as they would serve as obvious targets in the future. Talk
is of five smaller towers and a memorial park, or one massive memorial park
(which is doubtful, as the office space is needed).
The WTC did not appear in any the POTA's movies, correct? Just in the 1976
version of King Kong. <.html

Well, if they're going to try for 2003, they'll
have to announce within the next six months. Maybe they're waiting to see
how it does on Video and DVD.
-- Rory
Well most likely if anything will be announced it's
very possible it will be announced in the DVD release. Perhaps another
extra goodie on the DVD as Universal did with the Scorpion King on the Mummy
Returns DVD. Although we all already knew that before hand.
Also I believe Nostradamus predicted it as
well.
Best.

Someone said 2003 for the sequel. Again, that's a
tight schedule. However, I would grit my teeth and say it would be cool if
they could make that, the 40th Anniversary of the book. Especially if they
take their cue from the film's ending and do a modern society. If it weren't
for that I would say don't even try, make it 2004.
-
- - Jeff
I would say that it won't be a modern society but
rather back to the future with the original cast. And Leo Davidson trying to
repair the damage caused. It's the only way to bring back Ari, Attar and the
rest of the crew if they choose to go that way.
2004 is a no fly zone seeing that Star Wars Episode
III will be released. So the only windows would be 2003 and 2005 to avoid Fox
from competing with itself and make a good chunck on change year after year
between Star Wars 2002 and 2004 and Apes in 2003 and 2005. (If it ever gets that
far)
Best.

I think the key to this film is that Semos was to
return to the Planet of the Apes as was foretold in the prophecy. So if Semos
was to return, the point maybe that he did indeed leave the planet at one point.
As shown in the Semos images.
So if he never returned, then where did he
go?
Planet Earth?
And could General Thade on earth not be the real
Thade from the Planet of the Apes but rather be a reflection of General Thade
threw the decendent of Simos on Earth. In other words, it's simply a mirror
world of the real Planet of the Apes with Simos being the cause of the effect.
Earth being more advanced silmply because Simos went further back in time on
earth.
If this is true than most likely this sequel can
move in any direction.
Planet of the Apes present or past, or earth's
present or past.
Best.

Also adding to this:
Notice in the Semos Images that he's in a "POD." And Semos did in fact
arrive on the Planet in the Space Station. So why a "POD?" Because that is how
he left the planet. The Station did have PODS and I'm sure one of those had to
work.
So I know for a fact I'm right about that. And Wahlberg did say that you
can piece it together if you pay close attenetion to the film.
In the words of Russell Crowe: The Galdiator
"Okay, that's enough about me, now lets talk about me."
hehehe!
Pumped for a sequel!
Best.

5 movies or TV Series.
Although they would serve as a target, they have been thus (eg of bombing)

or whatever is next highest? Rebuild those suckers!
What, is the world going to be without skyscrapers? I hope not.

I do have this remote hope that maybe, JUST MAYBE, a sequel could be better, BUT ONLY if they don't make some of the same mistakes they made with the new movie, and the Ari and especially the Nova makeup were BIG mistakes. I think Nova's little sex dance was the worst moment in the movie. At that point I was like "What am I into Planet of the Apes for? Not this shit! Give me the original!"
I hope they go "Back to the Planet of the Apes" for a sequel.

Yeah, I like the idea of 'retro' Oscars....then maybe Roddy McDowall will get the one he deserved for Cleopatra. He was passed over because someone put him in the 'actress-supporting' catagory.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when I first went to see Apes 2001, when the group's walking toward Calima and Ari tells Leo that she has so many questions, he said, 'stand in line'. The last couple of times that I have seen it ( 6 times now, soon to be 7), he says, 'so do I'. Did they do what they did with 'Star Wars Empire'? When they dropped it from 70mm to 35mm, the were adding scenes at the end. Did anyone else notice this?

DVDs. If they want to make 2003 Burton won't have time to make another movie so
they better hit him up soon.

Well, if they're going to try for 2003, they'll
have to announce within the next six months. Maybe they're waiting to
see how it does on Video and DVD.
-- Rory
Well most likely if anything will be announced
it's very possible it will be announced in the DVD release. Perhaps
another extra goodie on the DVD as Universal did with the Scorpion King on the
Mummy Returns DVD. Although we all already knew that before hand.
Also I believe Nostradamus predicted it as
well.
Best.

You're probably right, especially since
Daena tells him something like "I know you'll come back". A modern society would
be good for the 3rd sequel, which Burton probably wouldn't do.
For the record, "Star Wars" 3 is coming out
in 2005. Probably in 2006 we'll get the other "Star Wars" movies on DVD and in
2007 a new "Indiana Jones". You heard it here first!

Someone said 2003 for the sequel. Again, that's a
tight schedule. However, I would grit my teeth and say it would be cool if
they could make that, the 40th Anniversary of the book. Especially if they
take their cue from the film's ending and do a modern society. If it
weren't for that I would say don't even try, make it 2004.
-
- - Jeff
I would say that it won't be a modern society but
rather back to the future with the original cast. And Leo Davidson trying to
repair the damage caused. It's the only way to bring back Ari, Attar and the
rest of the crew if they choose to go that way.
2004 is a no fly zone seeing that Star Wars
Episode III will be released. So the only windows would be 2003 and 2005 to
avoid Fox from competing with itself and make a good chunck on change year
after year between Star Wars 2002 and 2004 and Apes in 2003 and 2005. (If it
ever gets that far)
Best.

JUST MAYBE, a sequel could be better, BUT ONLY if they don't make some of the
same mistakes they made with the new movie, and the Ari and especially the
Nova makeup were BIG mistakes. I think Nova's little sex dance was the
worst moment in the movie. At that point I was like "What am I into
Planet of the Apes for? Not this shit! Give me the original!"
I hope they go "Back to the Planet of the Apes" for a sequel.

The WTC did not appear in any the POTA's movies, correct? Just in the 1976

I agree with this. Also, I really don't want them to rebuild the towers -- they're now in the past. I always thought the towers were kind of ugly, but that's just me. I want something else built there.
Now, they better leave the Empire State Building alone!!!

I can tell you're supposed to be looking at it from the Brooklyn side because what's left of the Brooklyn Bridge in in the lower right. Above it is what I think is supposed to be the Empire State Building, AND to the left, I now think, is what's supposed to be left of ONE of the World Trade Center Towers.
Everyone here who's got the DVD or can freeze-frame their VHS's has got to check this out and tell what they think. Hey, maybe this will give us something to talk about for at least two days?

Yes, Alex is right, I'm referring to the shot of ruined Manhattan that the gorilla army and Dr. Zaius see just before the film dissolves to the Mutant Bomb Worship scene.
My belief is that at least one of the Towers was completed, on the outside anyway by 1970, and that the second was nearly done. The buildings probably weren't ready for occupancy until a couple years later.
It's also interesting to me that after thirty years I finally see that in BENEATH the gorilla army is approaching Manhattan from Brooklyn. Boy, they really screwed up the locations in BENEATH. How close was Ape City suppposed to be in the world of BENEATH? In Nassau county?!!! The gorilla army should have approached Manhattan from the New Jersey side! But let's not get into that.
As to whether or not the WTC towers or just one tower is supposed to be in this matte painting, I DON'T KNOW. I just can't imagine what other building that tall is supposed to be in lower Manhattan, but then it's only a movie.

They should reverse the credits so you can look up the names

And what is Ari going to do with Periclese? If she doesn't put

I spent the rest of the evening checking CNN to see their reports on his death. In one segment they showed him at his last public appearance at the L.A. I kept thinking how wonderful it was that at the end of his life he shared with every APES' fan his behind-the-scenes footage from the making of PLANET, after thirty years. Hey, it just clicked. That's why the Fund is
having the tribute this weekend. It's the anniversary of his death.
I learned about his illness from the Army
Archerd column that announced it. I just had a feeling from the way it was
worded that there was no fight left. But I was shocked how fast he went. When
was the AMC marathon where they debuted the documentary? Roddy taped some intros
for them and he looked bad. He couldn't move his arms. When I see those I am
still in awe. He was a goodwill ambassador for "Apes" literally 'til the end. My
favorite tribute to him after he died was TBS, which had a montage of clips from
his career, during which he only says two lines: as a boy he says "Goodbye", and
they show him later in life as an old man saying, "Well, that's that".I still
well up when I think about it.

Yeah. Reading the reviews for 'Battle' is something else.
"Battle for the Planet of the Apes is the fifth and, Merciful God, the last
of the Apes movies." - Roger Eggbert.
I hate Roger Eggbert. He's just too snooty, and his reviews aren't worth
anything. Also, he has annoying one liners like the one above that just get
to me. Oh, and he looks like an egg, hence the name 'Eggbert'.

he! But maybe Burton's will be!
I checked the trades and the Battle Royale between "Apes" and "Jurassic 3"
is over. Last weekend "Apes " dropped from # 19 to # 23 with a total of $177
million in the U.S.; "Jurassic" actually ROSE from #23 to #20 and has $179
million. Doesn't look like "Apes" will beat it though both can be rounded
out to $180 million as we knew all along. But going toe to toe with a
"Jurassic Park" movie is no slouch.

.htmlThere was a nice tribute to John Chambers in today's "Hollywood Reporter"
in the "Tech Talk" column. It said, "One would have to look back almost to
the silent era and early talkies, to Lon Chaney Jr. and Jack P. Pierce, to
find a makeup artist who cast as long a shadow and influenced as many as
Chambers." They also talked to Tom Burman, who claims to have brought up
John's name for the "Apes" assignment, and Rick Baker, who sculpted the new
"Ape" characters under a photo of Chambers and himself.

.htmlTuesday's "Hollywood Reporter" had an article on the upcoming merchandise
for "Lord of the Rings" and "Harry Potter". Sellers are anteing up for them
even though the market is down. This summer's junk "met expectations",
though the expectations were low. The article noted that POTA stuff was
"modestly positioned, partly due to retailers' concerns that the movie would
be too dark and violent for younger children".

Hey Joe, have you ever heard the expression "Opinions are like assholes: everybody's got one and they all stink"?
I miss Gene Siskel.
Joe Russo one night read to me over the phone this 1968 review of PLANET from some British magazine that so wittily tore the movie apart that we were both laughing our heads off. He's told me he plans to post it on his website. I've got to remind him to do it so you all can read it.
