.html .htmlThat dude Tim Burton is at it again! Ain't-it-cool-news is reporting on a rumor that Burton is in serious talks with Saturn films to helm a new version of Robert Wiene's Silent Classic "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari." I guess he wants to 're-imagine' it!
Doesn't sound like the guy's too interested in doing another APES movie.

Even the "ain't it cool" website
says that "Caligari" rumor is probably bogus. Once a month Burton gets connected
to another "reimagining". There's even rumors he's going back to "Superman" and
that will NEVER happen after the way he was treated (pushed aside for "Wild,
Wild West"). If Burton's going to do a new "Apes" he's going to do it, and these
other rumors are meaningless. "Apes" is a bird in the hand. Just as Zanuck has
"Journey to the Center of the Earth" but would probably set it aside for a new
"Apes".

Yea, well it IS way too dark and violent for children. I'm not really that surprised. Of course the stores are packed full of wrestling of toys ..... I still can't believe that.

I hope the second wave does something with Ari's hair.

I thought Michael told you. Yes, though the cassette was broken. I took off
the flip up dust flap, and it's playable like that, but I think I'm going to
take the tape out and transfer it to a different cassette. I thought about
switching it to the shell of the other cassette which isn't payable anyway,
but I think I'm going to keep in intact just in case.
Thanks again,

Interesting ideas about the Burton film on
your website, Alex. But why do they belabor the point that Thade knows about
Leo's sunken pod?
- - - Jeff
Good point Jeff. Perhaps a through off from the point.
In other words Planet of the Apes is a mystery to be solved, so many points
will be given. As for the sunken pod, not unless Thade has scuba gear do I see
him raising that pod from the water...monkeys can't swim, I mean apes! Sorry
KRULL.
The depiction of SEMOS in the picture is the same as the depiction of
CHRIST.
Where in the new testament it's written. The angel says to the
apposels: "The same way you see Jesus leaving this world, the same you shall see
him return." It's a verse of the bible, not the exact words but close to the
effect, I don't want to start looking up bible verses (unless you ask) but
anyway the idea was taken from there. And so we have SEMOS returning in a space
pod.
After Christ rose from the dead, he then returned and visited the apposels
for a few days and on the mount of olives he rose up into the sky (heaven), then
the word was given by the angel about his return.
So again one has to ask, where the hell is SEMOS? :o)
And in my opinion the anwser was given at the climax of the
film.
Know that the whole idea of Semos and his second coming was taken from the
story of Christ, so it doesn't surprise me that that image was used in the
film.
If they used the image of him just floating into the sky I'd say you maybe
right, But to use the image of a Pod? The number 1 question would be, why?
And why have his second coming returning to CALIMA in a POD?
Things that make you go Hmmmm....
Best.

Cool idea, Alex. In interviews Burton has
basically said it's open-ended so everyone can reach whatever conclusion is
satisfying to them. As for getting the pod out of the swamp, it's less hard to
swallow than the opening of "Escape" (though "Escape" was the writer painting
himself into a corner, whereas the new movie had the freedom to go anywhere it
liked).

In an interview with Wahlberg, Wahlberg commented that he as a
christian actualy thought twice about his own beliefs when making the
film and having conversations with Burton. But then jokenly commented he only
second guessed his own faith for a second. In the end he said. "Burton is the
kind of guy that makes you think."
Burton didn't write the script, but no doubt he loved it.

Well, I don't know. Hopefully Burton will shed a lot more light on all this with his commentary track on the DVD. As for the Christ analogy: I guess it's there, even in the original novel Boulle had Merou thinking himself a possible savior of mankind, though Merou quickly gives up on the idea as hopeless (Boullian irony there). But I think Christ analogies have become awfully trite. It's a shallow way of instantly giving your story "meaning," but it really means nothing at all except you're being pretentious. About as deep as a puddle, as far as I'm concerned.

I fully agree and I'm aware of the Thade issue. I
just think it's a lot more to ask If Thade is the one going to earth's past than
Semos. After all Semos living and working with Humans knew all to well the full
story as well as knowing a lot more than Thade when it came to the Space Pods
and the Oberon's data base.
Human History, Planet Earth, Ape History on Earth,
ect. ect. ect.
Either one can change the past, Thade or Semos
(only one ape) but Semos knew a hundred times more than Thade so using Semos
would make a lot more sence. Using Thade, you would have to really be streching
it a bit.
When you look at Leo Davidson's issue, going into
the space pod to get supplies rather than rising the ship from the water it does
kind of make you think. If he used the pod to travel to Calima he would have
made it there a lot quicker. But he didn't because that baby was dead in the
water. And now thade is going to fix it?
I don't know about that. Again it's a hell of a
strech.
This same storyline was used in Escape but in that
case a sequel was never planed and it was the only way to remove themselves from
a painted corner.
POTA 2001 is no different than POTA Original. It is
a complete story within itself and not a soap opera. It has to be because if the
movie bombs at the box office. your then stuck with a half told
story.
And this is why all first films are ALWAYS
complete stories.
Unless you film sequels at the sametime as they're
doing now with Lord of the Rings.

Alex, if SEMOS travels back, then why is THADE'S name and head on the Lincoln

To say
that POTA 2001 is a complete story, with an ending like that, is very
naive. It is like saying SW4 (1977) is a complete story. Yes there
is a chance the sequel may not happen, but it was always INTENDED as is POTA

PLANET OF THE APES for the National Film Registry, as I believe the film was
very reflective of the American social and political climate of the time.
What sets this film apart from others is that the political/social
allegories are worked into the film rather than forced upon the viewer. You
have to think about what you're seeing, and often the subtext becomes more
apparent upon repeated viewings. I believe these elements make PLANET OF THE

I fully support any efforts that preserve American
film heritage, and I thank you for your time and consideration.

Chris L.
The people working at Fox Video just aren't
knowledgeable APES' fans. Twenty-three years ago I should have moved to
California and tried to get a job with them, but I had no idea then that APES
was in the kind of hands it's in. At least the Aussies had Ken "Taylor!"
(as if Nova were saying it). As for the Statue of Liberty on the PLANET
cover, I've talked about this before, but I was just thinking the other day
that we really should blame the Fox of 1969-70. I think it was a mistake
to start BENEATH with the ending of PLANET. That classic final image
should only be seen at the end of the original. But then, I don't think
anyone had an idea PLANET was a classic back then; it was just one of Fox's
bigger hits.
-- Rory
It
would've been interesting if they had left that scene out, because those
unfamiliar with the story would've had the shock of discovering that the
planet was actually Earth the same time Brent did (essentially then, they
would've pulled off the same 'twist' twice). However, I'm guessing that most
people who went to see BENEATH when it was first out had already seen PLANET
and (obviously) knew the ending, thus using the scene in BENEATH was
probably viewed as a means of establishing continuity.
One of the things I
always liked about BENEATH as a sequel was the fact that it was a story unto
itself as opposed to a rehash of the original. If you watch PLANET and BENEATH
back to back and try to see it as one long story, it doesn't work. They're
independent of each other, and to me that speaks to the overall strength of
BENEATH.

Well,
the cheapest DVD player you can get here that won't end up in the trash a month
later is about $250 - $300 US.
You
really have to watch out for cheap ones that don't play some
DVDs.
And
would you REALLY bother with an INFERIOR surround system? My amplifier
alone cost $1100 and the speakers a further $1400. All I need noe is a
sub-woofer and that itself will cost more than you are talking buying a whole
system for!! I listened to a few cheaper systems and they were cheaper for
a REASON!!! It was a bit like comparing POTA to that thing Burton and Alex
re-imagined. You only really need to see the inferior 2001 version once
and you know what you would pay more for!:) hehehehehehe

Alex,
I said
a LONG time ago thet there were Biblical overtones in the movie. I do get
it. Remember I was the first to mention how Semos is and anagram of Moses
and Leo is "the Lion" - much of the Old Testament refers to Christ as
the Lion.
Now,
how you can take that further and interpret the plot for the sequel is beyond
me. Then you proclaim wisdom because you propose an
hypothesis.
Alex,
that cluster of stars behind Semos is the Southern Cross. This was used to
help James Cook navigate the Endeavour, which was eventually responsible for the
English population of much of the Southern Hemisphere.
So is
it logical to interpret that Semos is an Aussie (or a New Zealander)? Or
is it Jesus that is an Aussie? Or can we conclude that Semos visited down
under and smoked some shit that made him float?
All
the above are just as wise as your interpretation, Alex.
Now
let me just clarify the points I actually made:
(1)
Yes, there are many Biblical overtones and links.
(2)
While it is fun to look for a deeper meaning in a puddle, you cannot go so far
as to claim that you know for sure what you are claiming. You could be
right, and I am very happy for you if you are, but even if you are right it does
not mean they will stick to this plot or plan if there is a sequel. PS I
think your hypothesis is very well founded and creative, but I think you need to
allow for the fact that it is only an hypothesis.
Now I
know I can't be any more clear than this. I just explained it to my 6 year
old daughter and she understands. If you stilldon't get it I'll attempt to
have her explain it to you (again):)
I
think you are already taking this a bit personally, but I hope not because that
is not how it is intended.
Mikey

NOBODY understood me - I had to say "Mickey - but leave off the 'ey'

Very well put Joe.
Not only that but the fact that from Jupiter
and beyond, all planets are GAS planets with stable orbits. And Pluto being a
rock in space having an unstable orbit that makes it an 8th to 9th planet when
making a full orbit around the sun.
It's a major debate among with most astronomers,

Thade knowing about the Pod in the water
just proves that he know knows that Leo is from 'somewhere
else'.
-Joe
I fully agree and I'm aware of the Thade issue. I
just think it's a lot more to ask If Thade is the one going to earth's past
than Semos. After all Semos living and working with Humans knew all to well
the full story as well as knowing a lot more than Thade when it came to the
Space Pods and the Oberon's data base.
Human History, Planet Earth, Ape History on
Earth, ect. ect. ect.
Either one can change the past, Thade or Semos
(only one ape) but Semos knew a hundred times more than Thade so using Semos
would make a lot more sence. Using Thade, you would have to really be
streching it a bit.
When you look at Leo Davidson's issue, going into
the space pod to get supplies rather than rising the ship from the water it
does kind of make you think. If he used the pod to travel to Calima he would
have made it there a lot quicker. But he didn't because that baby was dead in
the water. And now thade is going to fix it?
I don't know about that. Again it's a hell of a
strech.
This same storyline was used in Escape but in
that case a sequel was never planed and it was the only way to remove
themselves from a painted corner.
POTA 2001 is no different than POTA Original. It
is a complete story within itself and not a soap opera. It has to be because
if the movie bombs at the box office. your then stuck with a half told
story.
And this is why all first films are
ALWAYS complete stories.
Unless you film sequels at the sametime as
they're doing now with Lord of the Rings.

Personally I think you are reading FAR too much into this and you will
not know whether you are spouting wisdom or horse shit until the movie is
released (and while I believe there WILL be a sequel, who knows?). Even
if you are wise and you have deciphered hidden messages, what if you get a
whole new crew for the sequel? They may just say "Screw that" and go
another way.
Admit that you do not know and I will agree you are
wise.

Where did this image come from?
Michael
It came off the official web site as well as the movie itself.
When Attar is praying to Semos in the Tent.

Umm...Alex? I hate to throw a kink in everything you wrote out,

It's a long article (worth reading though) but the gist of it is
"Mistaken reports that the IAU intended to strip Pluto of its planetary

that Pluto is a sentimental favorite to remain a planet among both
scientists and the public."

The first half of "Beneath" is a complete
rehash of the original. "Escape" is a reversal. "Conquest" and "Battle" are
actually fairly original, after Dehn had run out of Boulle's novel to use. The
second half of Boulle's novel is similar to "Escape". But, it's based on the
Christ story.

Is that the same chronology that (for BENEATH) they used a still from
BATTLE showing Kolp and Alma with the Alpha-Omega bomb? The same scene
that isn't even in the U.S. version of BATTLE? This has gotta be the same
person who put the Statue of Liberty ending on the cover of PLANET.

The people working at Fox Video just aren't
knowledgeable APES' fans. Twenty-three years ago I should have moved
to California and tried to get a job with them, but I had no idea then that
APES was in the kind of hands it's in. At least the Aussies had Ken
"Taylor!" (as if Nova were saying it). As for the Statue of Liberty on
the PLANET cover, I've talked about this before, but I was just thinking the
other day that we really should blame the Fox of 1969-70. I think it
was a mistake to start BENEATH with the ending of PLANET. That classic
final image should only be seen at the end of the original. But then,
I don't think anyone had an idea PLANET was a classic back then; it was just
one of Fox's bigger hits.
-- Rory
It
would've been interesting if they had left that scene out, because those
unfamiliar with the story would've had the shock of discovering that the
planet was actually Earth the same time Brent did (essentially then, they
would've pulled off the same 'twist' twice).
If you watch PLANET and
BENEATH back to back and try to see it as one long story, it doesn't work.
They're independent of each other, and to me that speaks to the overall
strength of BENEATH.

My DVD player cost $100 and it plays fine.
It was a floor model and an off brand (Apex, cute huh?). I spent almost as much
for the "Apes" box set.

Well, the cheapest DVD player you can get here that won't end up in the
trash a month later is about $250 - $300 US.
You
really have to watch out for cheap ones that don't play some
DVDs.
And
would you REALLY bother with an INFERIOR surround system? My amplifier
alone cost $1100 and the speakers a further $1400. All I need noe is a
sub-woofer and that itself will cost more than you are talking buying a whole
system for!! I listened to a few cheaper systems and they were cheaper
for a REASON!!! It was a bit like comparing POTA to that thing Burton
and Alex re-imagined. You only really need to see the inferior 2001
version once and you know what you would pay more for!:)
hehehehehehe

$400 to $500 dollars. What's that? How much did you
all spend on Medicoms?!!! Hunks of plastic!!!!

Jesus Christ, you're right. Semos IS an
anagram for Moses! And Broyles said Thade is an anagram for death. He likes
those things.

Alex,
I
said a LONG time ago thet there were Biblical overtones in the movie. I
do get it. Remember I was the first to mention how Semos is and anagram
of Moses and Leo is "the Lion" - much of the Old Testament refers to Christ as
the Lion.
Now,
how you can take that further and interpret the plot for the sequel is beyond
me. Then you proclaim wisdom because you propose an
hypothesis.
Alex, that cluster of stars behind Semos is the Southern Cross.
This was used to help James Cook navigate the Endeavour, which was eventually
responsible for the English population of much of the Southern
Hemisphere.
So
is it logical to interpret that Semos is an Aussie (or a New Zealander)?
Or is it Jesus that is an Aussie? Or can we conclude that Semos visited
down under and smoked some shit that made him float?
All
the above are just as wise as your interpretation, Alex.
Now
let me just clarify the points I actually made:
(1)
Yes, there are many Biblical overtones and links.
(2)
While it is fun to look for a deeper meaning in a puddle, you cannot go so far
as to claim that you know for sure what you are claiming. You could be
right, and I am very happy for you if you are, but even if you are right it
does not mean they will stick to this plot or plan if there is a sequel.
PS I think your hypothesis is very well founded and creative, but I think you
need to allow for the fact that it is only an hypothesis.
Now
I know I can't be any more clear than this. I just explained it to my 6
year old daughter and she understands. If you stilldon't get it I'll
attempt to have her explain it to you (again):)
I
think you are already taking this a bit personally, but I hope not because
that is not how it is intended.
Mikey Mikey Mikey
PS
When I lived in the US in 1983 I introduced myself as "Mick" and NOBODY
understood me - I had to say "Mickey - but leave off the 'ey' ". Then
after Mick Dundee did his thing, the next time I came to the US I introduced
myself as Mike and everybody called me Mick. I seem to have now evolved
to Mikey. COOL!
Admit that you do not know and I will agree you are
wise.
Michael
Well the one thing I will admit is that you don't have to know anything
about the bible to understand the out come of the film. Pretty much the image
of Semos does speak for itself. Now as to why you didn't get? I'm affraid I
can't anwser that for you.
Best.
