You say Semos sitting in a pod is not evidence?

What more do you need?
Semos to land on your head with the pod?

That's
unreal.
I
bought an Akai for $500 (reduced from $750). It was ok but when I tried to
play Disney's "Dinosaur" it would not work - kept skipping and
breaking up.
Then
when I got the Toy Story box it would not load the menu for the supplemental
disc - the whole idea I got the Box after having purchased the 2 originals
separately.
So I
bought a Sony ($550, Reduced from $800). It works great, had Dolby 5.1 and
DTS. It only plays one zone (zone 4) and you cannot copy to
VHS.
Michael
My DVD player cost $100 and it plays fine. It was a
floor model and an off brand (Apex, cute huh?). I spent almost as much for the
"Apes" box set.
An APEX!!!
Holy moly Jeff, I bought the same one a while
back!
Mine is an AD-500W model that plays Region Free DVDs in Pal and NTSC
formats and also CODE free DVDs. Meaning I can record my DVDs on VHS. Make
backups of my DVDs.
WOW! MIRROR REALITIES!
Best.
Al
P.S. Mine cost $169.00 Brand new.

It

Does

Well, due to some last minute complications
and traffic, I missed the dedication of the Roddy garden. But I got to see the
statue. Apemania did a good job! Bill Blake said they changed some things.
I guess Liz Taylor did the dedication and cut the ribbon. Maybe Brian can fill
us in on what was said.

BATMAN!!!
That's unreal.
I
bought an Akai for $500 (reduced from $750). It was ok but when I tried
to play Disney's "Dinosaur" it would not work - kept skipping and breaking
up.
Then
when I got the Toy Story box it would not load the menu for the supplemental
disc - the whole idea I got the Box after having purchased the 2 originals
separately.
So I
bought a Sony ($550, Reduced from $800). It works great, had Dolby 5.1
and DTS. It only plays one zone (zone 4) and you cannot copy to
VHS.
Michael
My DVD player cost $100 and it plays fine. It was
a floor model and an off brand (Apex, cute huh?). I spent almost as much for
the "Apes" box set.

Well, I agree that not only BENEATH but ALL the sequels are really "stories unto themselves." Roddy McDowall talked about this in the interview on the S.E. BEHIND DVD. He didn't like to hear from fans asking or telling him how this brought about that from sequel to sequel. He wouldn't have been interested in an APES timeline. I like an analogy he used were he talked about the old Frankenstein films and he says, "Now, you're telling me in the last film the Monster was frozen in ice or blown up, but now he's alive?" It's the same with the APES movies. OF course TELL THAT TO FOX! For them POTA is ALL Five of the movies as one thing -- the APES saga. But it really isn't, it is five separate films.

it. They have players that'll load your whole DVD collection, and you'll
never have to get out of your Attar Signature chair, but you could finance
a new "Apes" movie for the cost.

I watched that Roddy interview with Bill
Blake last night. He didn't think he'd be able to sit through 2 hours of it but
the time flew by. I wish it had chapter stops.
I found the "Planet of the Apes Chronicles"
book by Paul Woods yesterday. Half of it is the old "Cinefantastique" magazine
and the rest is a rehash of what we already know. Good for folks who are just
starting their ape journey but not very original. But it does mention me and
"Veetus" so it still does the world a favor.

this brought about that from sequel to sequel. He wouldn't have been
interested in an APES timeline. I like an analogy he used were he talked
about the old Frankenstein films and he says, "Now, you're telling me in the
last film the Monster was frozen in ice or blown up, but now he's alive?"
It's the same with the APES movies. OF course TELL THAT TO FOX! For them
POTA is ALL Five of the movies as one thing -- the APES saga. But it really
isn't, it is five separate films. >>
You know, one of the reasons I like POTA so much is because of the saga. I
like the way the first four films work as a complete story. BATTLE is a
throwaway and doesn't advance the story so that's why I could care less about
it.

Sam", the Woody Allen comedy, is scheduled to hit DVD on the 23rd. It's a
$30 package, so I don't know if it's a 2-disc set or what. Jacobs' output
was almost exactly half musicals and half "Ape" movies, so this was an odd
choice. But Jacobs loved movies and he loved "Casablanca" so this story of
Bogie giving Woody tips on his love life obviously appealed to Jacobs. It's
unlikely Jacobs' remaining flicks ("What A Way To Go", "Goodbye, Mr. Chips",
"The Chairman", "Tom Sawyer", "Huckleberry Finn") will be on DVD any time
soon.

Are you going to buy it, Jeff? How many here have seen it. I haven't watched it in years. I'll probably wait and see if Blockbuster gets the DVD, then I'll just rent it. I have "Casablanca" on DVD, so maybe I'll eventually buy "Play It Again, Sam" but I don't know. I'm so confused.

Hey Alex, the new James Cameron DVD

They are five separate films/stories that just happen to have a common
thread running between them. Similar to Herbert's 'Dune' series, Asimov's
'Foundation', etc. Each story stands on it's own, but you get a greater
appreciation by reading them all.
This is off topic, but does anyone know of a website that has a detailed
list/description of the old Universal monster movies (the Frankenstein series
especially). I'm not looking for an IMBD site so much as a knowledgeable fan
site. Did anyone pick up those Frankenstein two on one DVDs that came out? I
can't remember which titles were released, but I do know that Son of
Frankenstein was one of them. Great movie BTW for those of you who haven't seen
it (especially compared to that piece of crap BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN. I cannot
believe there are some serious film historians that consider BRIDE superior to
the original.
But anyway...

this in the interview on the S.E. BEHIND DVD. He didn't like to hear from
fans asking or telling him how this brought about that from sequel to sequel.
He wouldn't have been interested in an APES timeline. I like an
analogy he used were he talked about the old Frankenstein films and he says,
"Now, you're telling me in the last film the Monster was frozen in ice or blown
up, but now he's alive?" It's the same with the APES movies.
OF course TELL THAT TO FOX! For them POTA is ALL Five of the

separate films.

I have to disagree with your comments about BATTLE. It's been defended on
this list before (and quite well by that one guy who wrote that three
part essay a month or so back). I believe it does advance the story
inasmuch as you get to see the result of the events of CONQUEST (at the
beginning of the film) and the main bulk of the story is about Caesar
trying to learn what had happened so far (the history of his parents and
the original 'Planet') and how to avoid the fate that had already
befallen the Earth once. The relationship between apes and humans is
somewhat improved at the end of the film, but questions remain i.e. how
long will the goodwill last between the two species, what will the
mutants do next since even though they lost the war they still have the
Alpha-Omega bomb, and so forth. The extended version of the film is
better, but if you really want to get the full gist of the story you
should read Marvel's adaptation.

I think the "sentimental favorites" comment was just the author trying to
humanize the story a bit. Here's another link from the International
Astronomical Union's homepage that goes into more detail:
And by their own description, the IAU is:
The International Astronomical Union (IAU), founded in 1919, is the
international non-governmental organization uniting professional astronomers all
over the world. It currently has 61 Member States and over 8,300 Individual
Members in 83 countries. Its scientific activities are coordinated by 11
Divisions and 40 Commissions spanning the entire field of astronomy. The IAU is
integrated in the international scientific community through its membership of
the International Council for Science (ICSU)
and represents astronomy in committees of the UN and other international
organizations. The permanent IAU Secretariat is located in Paris, France.
So I'm going to defer to the knowledge of the professionals in this case.

film. Everything that Cruise's character thought about getting involved with (or
did get involved with) would've/did have a negative outcome or consequence for
him. The prostitute he met turned out to have full blown AIDS, and we obviously
know what happened to him when he got to that little "party" (though he did get
to hear a cool atonal composition by Gyorgy Ligetti [sp?] so it wasn't a
complete loss).
Another example of his character trying to casually walk into that
lifestyle would be the scene where he's trying to rent a costume in the middle
of the night. Stop for a moment and think how ridiculous (and unusual)
doing something like that would be, yet he tried to do it
matter-of-factly.

No I'm
not going to feel stupid Alex,
I keep
an OPEN mind. I have said I may or may not be correct, so I can't
lose. I also said it could be a number of other things - including totally
insignificant. Hey, it could be an egg! It could be to promote the
Easter Eggs in the DVD. No, I don't really believe it is a necklace, my
point is (for those with the wisdom to understand it) that it could be a variety
of things. It is most PROBABLY a pod. But the star system?
Come on Alex, that's where your proposal is weakened. You even backflipped
and went from a conclusion that Pluto is not included because it is not a planet
to "oh, it could be that spot there". You are kidding
right?
Fact
is, unless you are in collaboration with the script writers/artist who drew the
picture, you are guessing. You are simply too stupid and arrogant to admit
it.
I'm
willing to wager $1 000US that you can not prove what you are saying to be
correct unless you are writing the script or know one of the script
writers/artist who drew the picture. Now let's see Alex claim he has the
freedom not to do this!!!!!
Again,
you either do not posses the intelligence to understand what I am saying or
English is your second language and you are struggling with it a bit. So
I'll just clarify AGAIN:
I am
not saying you are wrong.
I am
not saying you are right.
I am
saying you don't know for
sure.
I am
inviting you to prove that you know for sure, not that you are giving it a good
guess. There is a major difference, and if you accept my bet it could be
worth your while!
I had
the same argument with Mlccougar. He was saying POTA 2001 will definitely
be shit. I was saying he could be right, he could be wrong, but he could
not make the conclusion without having seen the movie.
You
kept saying it will definitely be a fantastic movie.
Neither of you could have made those claims, and you know
it.
As it
turns out, the general consensus is that POTA 2001 is VERY disappointing.
But you think it is great Alex so good for you, and most of us here will
conclude from this that you are easily pleased and that you were so positive
about the project, you refuse to see how poor the result was. But you are
happy so I am happy for you.
You
then argued it is a great movie because you have read the script. I'm not
even going there Alex!
As it
turns out, you were wrong. The movie was a major
disappointment.
So you
argue that you are right because POTA 2001 has made shit loads of
money.
That
is not an argument Alex. Hitler made shit loads from the gold fillings of
Jews he killed. Does that make him good?
Stop
confusing your enthusiasm with reality Alex. You are an extremist and you
are blinded by your own enthusiasm.
I have
let this go for a LONG time Alex, thinking to myself "that's just poor old
Alex being enthusiastic".
But
when I give my opinion and you dismiss it by being condescending to me instead
of just saying "Yes I know I can't PROVE it but I do believe it", you
go too far.
Michael

This is something I wanted to comment on but never got around to. The
story of the new film seems so rushed, so forced, so over before it even starts.
And the strange thing is, the original has a slightly shorter running time,
but that story takes place over the course of a couple of months (at least).
Rory is right- writing good narrative films (especially ones that take place
over a period of time) is slowly becoming a lost art. I can't think of
a recent film that even attempted to do this save for Cast Away, and
that even used that (somewhat annoying) "two months later" device. Actually,
"Ghost World" (now in theatres) comes to mind now that I think about it- that
story takes place over an entire summer and it doesn't feel at all rushed.
Before that, you'd have to go back to John Sayles "Lone Star" from 1996.
Even though the story only takes place over the course of a week or so, the
pacing is absolutely amazing.
Chris L.
Boy, do I know how your husband feels. I really
think Hollywood has lost the art of doing good narrative film.
Everything seems just aimed at the lowest common denominator.
Everybody at Fox is probably slapping each other on the back over the
'success' of the new PLANET OF THE APES, and that's fine I guess since
just making money off crap seems to be more and more what the Hollywood
studios are all about.

I'm actually quite sad that we won't have a revival of something
good to see in theatres for a few years to come; that is, we won't have
a really, really a$$-kicking POTA series. Not that all the sequels
to the original were kick-ass. Well, maybe we'll get lucky and they'll
make the second new POTA with driven characters and heart
wrenching/pounding plot developement. It's either that or it's like my
husband commented: "You know, I haven't seen a fantastic - I mean really
fantastic - movie in five or six years!" They don't all have to be
"fantastic", unless of course, they claim to be. In that event, then
they damn well better be!
All we really need is good story, good
writing, good acting. Is that really so diffiult to find in hollywood?
It seems the answer is for the most part yes. The 2 movies I enjoyed
most last year were both foreign. Not a hint of tinsel on them.

.htmlDon Post was the name of a company that licensed characters and made
Halloween costumes based on them back in the 70's. In fact, there was a
joke on one of the episodes of the Simpsons that made a reference to
them. Lisa was talking to Milhouse before embarking on trick-or-treating
and said something like"I doubt Radioactive Man goes around with a
costume on it that says Radioactive Man". I laughed and immediately
thought of the Lone Ranger costume I once wore.
Whoever wrote the text for that eBay sale was certainly taking a few
liberties with the truth.

Yeah, I remember when the Sci-Fi Channel was showing it around
eight years ago (along with the cartoon series for "Fantastic Voyage," and
"Journey to the Center of the Earth"). The shows would end with the
'20th Century-Fox Television' logo.
-- Rory
Does anyone know where I can pick up episodes of these two series? I saw
them on Channel 5 in NYC in the mid-seventies (4-5 PM as I recall). I
always enjoyed watching them and wouldn't mind adding them to my
collection.
Come to think of it, Channel 5 always showed cool cartoons. I remember
watching the Filmation Batman/Aquaman/Superman cartoons, the 1967 Spiderman
cartoon (after WWOR Channel 9 stopped broadcasting it), Underdog, The Lone
Ranger (also Filmation I Believe).
Sigh...the good old days.

Yeah, but don't forget a nice big TV too - if you're going to go for the
whole hog, you'll be wanting a massive telly too!

Yeah, I currently have a 32 inch 'telly' (don't know what that is in metric), but I want something bigger. I'm just waiting for these digital TVs to come down in price. But now with this economy going in the tank, who knows?!

This is off topic, but does anyone know of a website that has a detailed list/description of the old Universal monster movies (the Frankenstein series especially). I'm not looking for an IMBD site so much as a knowledgeable fan site. Did anyone pick up those Frankenstein two on one DVDs that came out? I can't remember which titles were released, but I do know that Son of Frankenstein was one of them. Great movie BTW for those of you who haven't seen it (especially compared to that piece of crap BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN. I cannot believe there are some serious film historians that consider BRIDE superior to the original.
Yeah, I got three of those Universal double feature DVDs. I got "Son of Frankenstein/Ghost of Frankenstein," Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man/House of Frankenstein," and "Werewolf of London/She-wolf of London." They are a mixed bag, and they really skimped on the extras. The print for "Son of Frankenstein" is very good. That for "Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man" is in rough shape. It could have used some digital restoration BIG TIME.
As for a website on the Universal Monster movies, all I can say is use a search engine and see what comes up.
However, "Bride of Frankenstein" is one of the best movies of all time -- BRILLIANT!!, it's THE BEST of the Universal classic horror films, AND a better movie than "Frankenstein" (1931)!!!! A piece of crap?!!! You're crazy!!!!
I know 'alot' about the Universal Monster films, so feel free to ask me any questions.

Saying that to him would be saying that to me, too. Why can't you just enjoy
the movie for what it's worth? You don't have to compare it to the older

<< As it turns out, you were wrong. The movie was a major disappointment. >>
Actually, I've only heard that the movie sucks from people at this group.
Locutus and I hold chats once a week on Fridays or Saturdays (or both,
sometimes), and everyone that we don't know has come in and has said that
they enjoyed the new movie. I don't think I've heard a negetive comment
about it in the chat.
Anyway, I think this arguement is pointless, seeing that it is not going
anywhere. Alex has his own ideas that he believes. He could be right, he
could be wrong. Maybe, when the next movie comes out, he'll be laughing in
our faces because his ideas were right, or maybe we'll be laughing in his
because they were wrong. It doesn't matter all that much. Alex is just
guessing about the new movie, and I believe that it's a great guess.
The point is, get along, have fun, discuss Apes, talk about the next movie,
just don't turn other peoples ideas into shit. After all, they are just
ideas.

I won't say Bride is better or worse. It's just different. Maybe that's
what I like about it. The Monster talks and you have that duel role of Elsa
Lachester playing the Bride and Mary Shelley, and the music is great! I know
a lot of you don't like the new film and I also wish it was better, and wish
there was more to like about it. But I can say the same about the original.
I'm with Kim Hunter on the Hear No Evil gag. It should never have been shot,
because they'd used it . . and they did.
When John Ford was asked if they should shoot a close up of Walter Pigeon
under the tree in How Green is my Valley, he said, "Hell no! If we shoot it
they'll use it!" Backstory is on AMC tonight for the Roddy fans. But that
gag detracts from the seriousness of the scene. Someday I may re-edit my own
versions of both films. Granted, the original will leave a lote more to work
with. Maybe they'll get it right in a sequel. If the Boneheads of Hollywood
get their way probably not. They screw up everything they can get their
hands on. <.html
