I agree. Why they didn't have the large looming picture of Zaius (or Urko for
that matter) with the smaller figures of Virdon, Galen and Burke, I'll never
know. Perhaps the other side of the box has a different pic with the
aformentioned characters.

Well, I do like the background picture of (the pointing) Zaius, though personally, I would have preferred a pic of Urko. But I still think that in the center of the box they should have had the 3 gorillas silhouette. But since they didn't do that, I also would have would liked to see a picture of the three fugitives rather than the pic of Perdix and Virdon. To me, that picture really makes no sense on that box...

The episode's title is "The Deception". I don't believe they will go back and change the title card , but they might call it "Dragoons" on the box so people will remember it (the Dragoons are the Klu Klux Klan apes in the episode).

Yes, I do know that it really is titled "The Deception", but in the description, it says it includes the episode called "The Dragoons" (and yeah, I do know they are the Apes version of the Klan...) You may have a point about the "possible" (box) renaming of the episode, but then again, in my opinion, why bother doing it? I mean my guess is most of the people buying the box set will be quite familiar with the episodes, so they will also be familiar with the titles...I'd say your point would be more valid if they were released as individual episodes, then people would be looking for specific titles (episodes) and would be looking for something familar, that'd "click" with their memory, in this case, the Ape Klan (The Dragoons). But since it is only a box set (as far as I know) why not just give them their real titles, both on the box and the dvd...

Well, I don't have the "Apes Chronicles" with the serialized scripts
in them, as a matter of fact, I think the last one I have was the
first issue I received, that one being from August or September of
last year... I wish Hoknes would get on the ball and actually do
another issue like he keeps saying he is going to. I mean I emailed
him last year, then he told me look for one in December...Well
December rolled around with no new issue, then it was "Look for one
in February or early March..." Guess what, no new issue...And here we
are,10 months later, and no issue, this from a publication I was led
to believe was quarterly (as in 4 issues a year, not "You'll get 4
issues whenever I think I want to do one.)

Jeff, I'm serious when I say this, you might as well take over
publication of "Apes Chronicles"...He sure isn't delivering the
goods, and I'm sure that you'd do a better job of getting the issues
done in a timely manner.

Jeff Burton (aka Dodge) died, according to IMDB.com, on January 18, 1988.   According to info Joe Russo got from another APES' fan, Robert Gunner died in Sept. of '92.   I don't know what their ages were.

I talk to Mlccougar privately from time to time, and I always ask him when he plans to rejoin the group.  Tonight I mentioned that the TV series will be out soon on DVD and I guess that did it.

Unfortunately, I don't know that much about the TV show.  Maybe Michael Whitty does.  Remember the brief Cougar/Whitty war?   Please, not that again.

Well, I've got to find something in this English POTA book that Krueger hasn't already read in Starlog, so I'm outta here.

Oh yeah, there's some discussion from Mort Abrahams on the final version of the script for PLANET being mostly the work of John T. Kelly, but I need to read it again.

Well, I was out of the group for awhile, but I decided to rejoin it
now. Mainly because all the crap about the new thing seems to have
settled down, except of course by you know who, who said he quit now
anyway. I guess you guys just picked on him too much..J/K..He was the
instigator, you told him your views and then when you did, he threw
an ever lovin' fit and swore at you like a drunken sailor. He was the
one being the a** yet he turned it around like Whitty and Rory were
the bad guys. I normally don't always agree with you Whitty, but from
reading the archives the last few days, I'd say you handled it rather

Perdix was the police officer that was hell bent on capturing the Dragoons in the episode "The Deception". He (of course) got a little help from the fugitives... but he did catch up with them, and arrested their leader Zon. While he was at it, he should have busted Sestus too, he was an accomplice after all....

months. Maybe that's a good time for our splashy comeback.

Does anyone else find it strange that on the same day Alex announces his self
imposed exile, MLCougar suddenly reappears unannounced from his 4 month trip
to the Forbidden Zone? I am beginning to think that they are the same person.
A classic case of a split personality. A two sided coin (one side loves POTA
2001 without even seeing it and the other hates POTA 2001 without even
seeing). Is anyone else with me on this one?

This is exactly what I told Rory when I spoke to him tonight. I said to him, "Yeah, but if I rejoin tonight, they'll all think I'm just Alex's alter-ego, come back to haunt the group..." And as I can see, someone here did say it, even though it was (I hope) just said in jest. Also, it wasn't a 4 month exile to the Forbidden Zone, more like 2 months. I was here for a week or 2 after the release of that movie, but quit (temporarily) because I was so sick of all the postings about it's ending. And though I didn't post, since I wasn't a subscriber, I did start to look at the archives from time to time. And lately it was every day, so I just figured I might as well rejoin, then I can post on the group again. And for the record, I couldn't be his alter ego, because I don't look for religious symbolism in movies, and I don't have four dvd players like he does. Plus, I'm still down on that movie.....

Unfortunately, I don't know that much about the TV show.  Maybe Michael Whitty does.  Remember the brief Cougar/Whitty war?   Please, not that again.

Well, while I'm far from being an expert on the show, I do know some about it. I don't know jack sh*t about the unfilmed scripts, or the annuals, other than the one from 75, so I thought they'd be good topics for discussion here, they sure gotta be better than who has the best dvd player(s). And yeah Rory, Whitty and I did have our differences in the past, but as I told you privately, we have basically came to a truce. I'm sure not going to rehash that. And as for being a warring faction, look who's talking? You and Alex were going at it almost from the 1st day of the new things release.Whitty and I had a few skirmishes, where as you and Alex had a long, drawn out battle in the postings. And as of late, Whitty and Alex have also been having a battle royale, which was a lot worse than what he had with me. So don't worry, I have no plans on any arguments with Whitty any time soon.

Bring up anything you want to, but if its dealing with POTA2001, I'll know nothing about it, so I won't be able to tell you anything about it. But it does seem like Rory told me he either seen, or wanted to see the HBO special, so he may know about it. And if not Rory, well I'm sure Mr. POTA2001 will be able to tell you all about it. He may even be able to tell you where to get an illegal bootleg of it, just like the copy of the movie he has. A cheap shot I know, but if he supported the movie so much, then he should be pissed that Fox and Zanuck lost out on some money by him setting home watching the bootleg rather than seeing it at the theater. After all, thats what makes a movie good, how much money it makes.

Ok, now everyone always asks what is your favorite of something, I on the other hand would like to know which episode of the Apes tv series do you think is the worst? While I do think most of them are pretty good, and a few are really good, (I know Rory, there are times you don't think they are worth the film they are printed on), for me, I'd have to say the worst episode is "The Horserace".

Well, that's one little bit of new topic to discuss. Nothing great I know, but its gotta be a lot better than the postings I have read from the last few days. Damn, what a bunch of petty crap that was...

Yeah, that would have made more sense than what the cover is, after all, the 3 fugitives ARE the main characters of the show, so all 3 should have been featured.

Ken will tell you where the comic book is from - he has told me about 20 times and I still don't remember.

I thought they could have done a lot better on the TV DVD Box picture too.

Have you seen the video covers Ken made for the Australian release?  These are exceptional - appropriate to the titles too.

Ken, do you still have scans of these?  If you do, send them and I'll make links for the rest of the group.

I don't know the answer about the "Dragoons", but I am fascinated.

I seen the picture of the box set for the series....Am I alone in thinking they should have had the silhouette of the 3 gorillas on horseback on the box instead of the picture of Virdon and Perdix? (Yes, I know its nit-picking, but hey, I'm trying to keep this an Apes discussion, not who has the most expensive dvd player in their home....)

And was it just a bit of mistitlement on their part, or is "The Deception" really renamed "The Dragoons" for release on this box set? Anybody know??

Finally, I read sometime ago (maybe it was in these postings) that there was a one issue comic of the tv series characters released in a foreign country (but I have no idea which one). Can anyone confirm this, and if so, what is the story about?

I told him, and I'll tell you all that I think his contributions to the group are fantastic (and today's efforts illustrate that point).

The group needs new topics and he is always creating them as do other contributors.

For a while there, things were getting PERSONAL.  That was bad and it is over.  I guess it is strange - for example I'm so used to Rory that when he "insults" me, I know it is "tongue in cheek" or he is just being a rude New Yorker!!

Mr Cougar and I will not agree on everything but I respect his opinion and he knows that.

Well, I've got to find something in this English POTA book that Krueger hasn't already read in Starlog, so I'm outta here.

Oh yeah, there's some discussion from Mort Abrahams on the final version of the script for PLANET being mostly the work of John T. Kelly, but I need to read it again.

Ok, I know there are 2 unfilmed scripts for the tv series in existence. They are titled "The Hostage" and "A Fallen God". Now I have never read them, nor do I know what they are about, (except in an eBay description, it says "A Fallen God" involves a helicopter!?)

And I finally bought one of the 3 British tv series annuals, the one from 75...Why I brought that up is this: In the annual, it has 2 stories in comic form, one called "Journey Into Terror", and the other is called "When The Earth Shakes". My question to anyone in the group that may know is this: Are these 2 stories the same stories as the unfilmed scripts (only with different names?) If so, are they quite different in the shooting scripts, or are they pretty much the same story line?

Finally, I know Serling wrote 2 (unused) scripts for the tv show....And I know there were different names, etc. in the Serling scripts, but my question here is this: Can anyone tell me if the basic elements of his 2 scripts were used in any of the comics/stories in either of the other 2 annuals? What I'm getting at is: Did they use his scripts story lines, only altered to fit the tv series characters/setting?

The one I liked least was the on with Sodra Locke (Clint Eastwood's long time squeeze) in it - I don't recall the title.

The Pilot is my fave and all the episodes that had links to old earth - the one where Urko and Pete (? maybe Alan) fell into the old subway station,  the one where they found the computer.  I liked the sort of continuous sub-plot of Burke and Virdon trying to find a way home/something to play the disc (a mini DVD?) on.

I'm glad you guys are talking about the TV series, there is more soul
in one half of a TV series episode than in the whole of POTA 2001.

    Yeah, all right already,
I've been waiting for the dust to settle and for the group to get back
    on track.
Not that I'm the POTA Guru or anything but I'll try to help out with
    what I know.

    TV SERIES:
It's funny that this was mentioned about the title of the Episode "The
Deception". When I was at Fox and we were preparing for the TV series
VHS release, we received screeners from the L.A. office. The cassette
containing the "Deception" episode was labelled "Dragoons". I got all
excited for a about a second thinking it was some rare unaired episode
before I remembered the "Dragoons" were featured in "The Deception"
episode. So I think maybe the episode was originally called "Dragoons"
and was later changed for some reason. It's possible ( AND DON'T QUOTE
ME HERE) that whoever at Fox is preparing the DVD release may not be a
POTA fan ( yeah, go figure) and has used the label as the reference for
the episode title and NOT the actual episode, not even realizing that it
was an error. I may have made the same mistake if I hadn't referred to
my reference material ( primarily Jeff's episode guide from Ape
Chronicles) that I had at the time.
With regard to the packaging, I quite like the look of the DVD packaging
but agree with the comments posted so far. As Zaius was in only a few
episodes and Galen was in EVERY episode ( and the fact that Roddy was SO
synonymous w/ POTA) I would have like to have seen him on the cover.
Having said that, anyone who has the Aussie TV series box sets will
notice that I opted for Urko and Zaius on the outer boxes as I thought
they looked more menacing (Galen features on a couple of the individual
cassette slip covers inside). So I can see where they may have been
coming from with their choice of cover character. For the record, I sent
all the art we created for the Aussie release to the L.A office in case
they wanted to used any of the elements. I guess they didn't.

    FOREIGN COMICS:
Apologies for the delay, but attached are a couple of scans from the
comic I have from either Spain, Argentina or maybe even Mexico (?). From
what I can gather it's from Jan 1977 and is the first issue. It features
the TV series characters in a new story. Not being able to read Spanish,
I have no idea what it's about. I hope it is of interest to those who
    were enquiring.

    Best,
    KEN

I know the names too. I've seen the shows about as often as the movies. In fact, taping the TV movie re-edits back in '88 was what got me back "into" "Apes". That, the Joe Russo article in "Starlog" and renting the movies on video and copying them (in those days, the "Ape" tapes were $50 a pop!). Go ahead, try to stump me.

The Locke episode was "The Cure", where they have to cure malaria. Not one of the better episodes but the ending is kinda like Burton's (sorry Cougar, cover your ears). Remember where H. B. Carter says "One day they'll tell a story, etc..." .  In this one Locke says (OK, I haven't memorized it but something like ) "One day I'll have children and I'll tell them about this man from another world". Both kinda turn their respective astronauts into flesh and blood myths (I still say the new movie takes it's cue from the TV show more than from any movie).

The "city" episodes were "The Trap" and "The Legacy" (my favorite). In the early '80's when they created those TV movie versions Roddy did introductions in ape makeup (those should be on the DVD!). What I've been told is that Roddy says the astronauts made it back to their time, a nice, tidy wrap up. When I interviewed Ron Harper he said after they had been cancelled they were able to do one more episode and they did the hang glider episode. I asked him why they didn't wrap up the show and he said, well, they still thought there was a slim chance they might be saved from the axe.

It's my understanding that it's the TV stations and Networks who are responsible
for trimming TV shows for either self censorship or to squeeze in more ads. The
masters we used came directly from Fox TV, so I believe they are uncut.
Also Jeff, I'm happy you don't mind me using your article for reference. If you
read closely, the synopsis' on the packaging for each episode are loosely based
on yours. There, the truth is out. Plagiarism is alive and well.

synonymous w/ POTA) I would have like to have seen him on the cover.

Of course they didn't.  Fox hires people to do these jobs, and those people have to justify their jobs by coming up with something new.  The old has always got to be presented as something new.  Most people are only interested in new things.

      PEOPLE!!!!

Another point I'd like to bring up at this time is the possibilty we may not get the most perfect looking transfers of these shows.  Remember this is Fox.  They're probably too cheap to digitally clean them up, or else they'll save that for the super-special Collector's Edition with a still gallery of thirty photos.  So, let's hope for the best, but stay cool.

Yeah, that would have made more sense than what the cover is, after all, the 3 fugitives ARE the main characters of the show, so all 3 should have been featured.

.html Before we released the TV series on VHS, I was toying with the idea of releasing the five TV movie re-edits. I thought maybe they'd have the Galen intros, they didn't. We received screeners of the 5 'movies' and the quality was pretty poor. Very soft and kind of faded. So that idea was dropped in favour for releasing the entire series. No point in leaving out only two episodes. Besides, it was more profitable for us to release 2 box sets of three cassettes rather than squeeze all 5 TV movies into a three cassette box set ( that's how the original movies were packaged here). Besides the prints of the individual episodes were much superior in quality AND I'd forgotten how poorly the episodes were edited together for the 'movies'

This is all off the top of my head, but I've a feeling that the rerelease
from earlier this year (can't remember the label) was a cheaper version than
the Varese edition and featured the same tracks as Intrada's (i.e. including

Not owning a multi-region DVD player, it's kind of irrelevant for me, but
I'd be looking forward to the TV series more, but then that's because I'm
more of a fan of "classic" PotA than the new one.

However, I think DVD is probably the perfect medium to re-experience the new
      film.

Sadly not of any help, but I found a video of the Filmation version of
"Journey to the Centre of the Earth" in a charity shop here in the UK for
      75p! Wonderful!

Yeah, I've got a few of the old superhero ones too - I love this stuff.
Unfortunately it's of no use to you. But hey, if I had any idea how to
encode them properly, I'd burn 'em on a CD for you - in fact, now I think
about it, why haven't any Apes fans tried this with the cartoon series? Some
people have got them on video, and this would seem the ideal way to supply
      other fans with bootleg copies.

Hey, don't all go mental at me for suggesting that by the way - I'd love an
official release as much as anyone, but it seems like copies are the only
way some of us will ever see them!

I'm curious, what makes you say this? I could perhaps have missed something
in the film, but I've always thought that it took place within a matter of
days, certainly no more than a couple of weeks. I'd be interested to hear

Jeez, trust you to turn everything negative! (I believe it is obligatory to
      insert "J/K" here)

I think "Up Above The World So High" is probably the worst - but I'm not
sure if maybe my opinion of that episode was influenced by the sadness of it
being the last episode. "Tomorrow's Tide" seems to be held in fairly low
regard generally, but I don't think it's the worst. And I actually like "The

Seconded. This is how the TV series should be done. In fact, I've attached a

That's terrific! I like the cover especially... Where on Earth did you find

There will not be a whole lot of necessity for clean up - the VHS were just SUPERB quality.  I was shocked at how good they were and I am very fussy about quality (as a result of having seen a lot of DVDs - it is hard to watch VHS after DVD).

I think the quality will be great, but I take your point that it will probably be more luck than planning.

Well, GOOD!!   I haven't seen the show in years, but I remember that on the Sci-Fi Channel here in the States, it didn't look that bad, but I really can't remember.  However, I've seen some broadcasts of those complilation, dumb titled movies that looked horrible.

Yeah, it'll probably look good.  Hey, what are you Aussies planing to do with these DVDs of the show?  The discs will be region one only, I think.  And that goes for the Brits too.  I know some have players that will play all regions, but. . . .

Found it on Ebay a year or two back. Can't remember which country or how much it
was. It's 36 pages and it's smaller than a regular comic, 16x22 cm. By the look
of it, it's a self contained story but here's what it says on the last page if
        any one can translate:

        FANTASIA?REALIDAD DE NUESTRO PROPIO FUTURO?
DESTINO DE NUESTRA TECNOLOGIA SIN ALMA?
        PREGUNTAS, PREGUNTAS...
EN EL PLANETA DE LOS SIMIOS....

I'm guessing it's asking what our heroes destiny will be and what can they
expect on the Planet of the Apes????

I have a couple of other comics from other countries, France, Sweden, Mexico,
Brazil and a full run of the U.K series. I 'd love to get a representation from
each country that produced APE comics. I mainly like the different covers as
generally the content is basically the same.

Are you talking about the original PLANET, Alan?  If so, yes, I would agree that the events in the film took place over the course of at least a month or more.  Remember when Taylor sees Zira at the trial he says to her, "Where have you been, it's been weeks."  (or something to that affect.)

Now, BENEATH I would say takes place over the course of only a few days, BUT how long was the period supposed to be between PLANET and BENEATH?
