No, Haristas! I'm talking technically, where Serling wrote the story and the characters and then it was basically Wilson's dialogue. That's how Serling described it. I'm not talking about the quality of the writing. Serling and Wilson are probably turning over in their graves that their names are even on Burton's movie. Or maybe they just need to move after a quarter century.              - - - Jeff

That would be tough to get because they were very secretive about it. They
wouldn't even give it to agents. According to Burton Fox sat on their hands
about 6months after he was hired so I'm sure by the time they got to really
handing out the script it had probably changed into the version Alex has,
which is probably close to the one printed in the 'making of" book. It's
like that other pot of gold, Cameron's treatment. There wasn't preproduction
going on so they weren't distributed like the Rifkin, Stone and Columbus
scripts. Burton, Zanuck and Baker all hated Broyles scripts so changes began
immediately. Broyles says the movie is his characters and story, but not his
dialogue. Kinda like Michael Wilson rewriting Rod Serling on the original.
What was the question?                                    - - - Jeff

Kinda like Michael Wilson rewriting Rod Serling?!!!!  WHAT YOU TALKIN' 'BOUT, VEETUS?   More like Huntz Hall rewriting the Ritz Brothers!  Get real, Jeff, the Broyles script probably sucked, but that dude at Fox, I can't remember the name, paid him a fortune for it, so that's what they had to go with.  Well, they got what they paid for with the final results.  "Doesn't that make you misty?"

Burton said he did "Batman Returns" because he was unhappy with the first one. Face it, if Burton does a good sequel it will make the first one go down easier. He doesn't want to be the guy who sent POTA down in flames (neither does Wahlberg). As for 2003, "X-Men 2" was supposed to come out next year but delays (they won't start shooting 'til next spring) mean it'll probably be out in Summer 2003. and it's all script problems.

OK Rory, But I'll go with 2003.

Like with Batman, Burton will want to correct his err and do so with haste.

Shit, the way the world is going let's all just be happy if we are all here in 2003.

The new Millenium has lost its innocence within the first decade.

Michael

There was never any innocence to lose, you silly Aussie!  2003 will be dedicated to other big Fox pictures.  2005 more likely -- if at all.  Burton won't go near APES again unless Fox offers him a BILLION dollars -- and that won't happen.  And not only will we all be here in 2003, we'll all die old men in bed watching POTA on a big wall screen, raising are fingers to the image with our last breath, like that old guy at the end of 2001!

Hey LordT,
'Leo's Log' says it all. It would make for good TP. It's actually a kids story book version of the movie. So it's the movie.....dumbed down even further. If that's possible.

I had read this in the tabloids but now I just heard it again on Stern, so
there must be something to it.  Tim Burton and Lisa Marie have broken up, and the reason is Helena Bonham-Carter. Though appearently it's not entirely her fault.  They've been on the skids for over a year, so when they got together for the project . . . Well, lets face it as hot as Lisa Marie is, if you'd been with her for over ten years and H B-C came along what would you do?
Especially if you look like Tim Burton.  If he wasn't a successful movie
director he wouldn't be getting either one of them!  Let's face it, it he was
still painting vans, they would give him the time of day.

I bought the cartoons years ago but I got sick of rewinding and changing tapes so I gave up.  The guy who recorded them had them all over the place and not in sequence so PLEASE Al, record them in order (because there actually is an order to them).

Will do, Michael.
I have them all in order, on VHS and great quality so it will be done.

You know, I think on the whole, Tim Burton's movies are good. Some I like
better than others. But I don't have a single one in my video collection. I
think that says something about his skill as a storyteller. Usually I talk
about playability in reference to music. But in this day and age of video on
demand, I think watchability is just as important. If I was doing to a
deserted island and could only pack ten or twelve movies would I pick a Tim
Burton film. No.

That sounds great Al.

I bought the cartoons years ago but I got sick of rewinding and changing tapes so I gave up.  The guy who recorded them had them all over the place and not in sequence so PLEASE Al, record them in order (because there actually is an order to them).

Michael

Will do, Michael.
I have them all in order, on VHS and great quality so it will be done.
Sorry for the delays in post but I just got back from Orlando again. This time doing our Universal Studios Thing.

Best.

Oh, I forgot to meantion.
While I was at Orlando, I visited Virgin Records and saw the latest issue on Cinefex. POTA 2001 is in it, great spread on POTA. They even have a behind the scenes shot on the ending of the film. The whole damn statue was real and not just a blue screen rag on the head as was rumored on the web. That is one awesome statue, reminded me of the Lawgiver.

I didn't buy it knowing that I'll find it here in my area and didn't want it to get damaged during my trip. Picking up that baby tomorrow.

Here's the cover. A.I. and Jurassic is on it as well. And POTA has the smallest spread in it. But on the other hand, out of the three films, POTA had the smallest amount of Special Effects, so that's understand able. I believe the magazine leans more towards FX than Makeup.

Check out the prices on ebay, search for "DVD-R" on ebay.
But with the release of this new dvd recorder at Best Buy, most likely the prices on blanks will going down as well. I remember when CD-Rs and CD-RWs were a lot more expensive than now.

It's a tough call.  I've seen them all so many times they're burnt in my brain.  In any case it's a tough choice either way.  You couldn't take anything you hadn't seen before for fear of getting stuck with a bad one.  I remember being stuck in Mexico with only a few videos.  And watching the same couple few good ones over and over.
It was that or no TV.  So it's not a list I would want to make without a great deal of thought.  But I'm sure that list would have the films that I watch whenever they're broadcasted, no matter how many time I've seen them.  Makes you wonder...Depends on how long I planed on staying.  In other words the 2 week list and the 2 month, or even 2 year list would all be different.  No?

My personal favorite was and still is "StarBlazers".
A Japanese mini series from the 70's. Three series, each series has about 26, 30 min. episodes and tells a complete story.

1> Quest for Escandar
2> The Comet Empire
3> The Bolar Wars

Excellent stories about alien worlds trying to take over earth, with one space battleship and it's crew, "The Star Force" as mankinds only hope.

The Japanese can really tell some kick ass stories, and this one is by far the best they've ever told. As you can tell by the price of these videos on the official web site. I loved these toons growing up and watching them on television everyday before going to school.

D'oh! I was mistaken, "Unofficial Companion" is almost correct in it's cartoon chronology but not quite. Alex, use Greene's book, the order is accurate (because I gave it to him). In fact I went back to my notes from '93, when I first saw them. I don't know what order for sure they broadcast them, but this is the order that makes sense. They are also in this order in the novelizations (we know that "A Date With Judy" is actually "An Unearthly Prophecy").

1. "Flames of Doom" - definitely the first episode. The astronauts crash land, wander, Judy disappears and Bill is captured.

2. "Escape From Ape City" - definitely episode two. Ties up the story from #1. In fact the two are almost like one episode.

3. "Unearthly Prophecy" - Bill and Jeff mention they are still looking for a safe haven for the humanoids. They will find one next episode.

4. "Tunnel of Fear" - begins the New Valley story arc; Bill and Jeff learn about New Valley

5. "Lagoon of Peril" - At the end of the previous episode, they discuss going back to the ship for their laser drill. They obtain it in this episode.

6. "Terror on Ice Mountain" - self-contained episode but is the sixth episode in the novelizations

7. "River of Flames" - Judy leaves the Underdwellers to rejoin Bill and Jeff (it was just the duo in the previous episodes).

8. "Screaming Wings" - picks up where "River of Flames" left off

9."Trail to the Unknown" - introduces Ron Brent; the rest of the episodes feature the gang at new Valley

10. "Attack From the Clouds" - solves the dilemma of the previous episode about retrieving the plane

11. "Mission of Mercy" - The events of the last episode lead directly to their fuel shortage in this one. Note: There's a montage in this one showing the passage of time, where they animate over actual photos. These are from publicity of Bill Blake and Paula Crist, so they are the only "live actors" to appear in the cartoon series (Bill is the only actor to appear in both series; Paula was in "Battle" as a human)

12. "Invasion of the Underdwellers' - Urko is suspended from duty, which plays into the next episode

13. "Battle of the Titans" - Urko has no legal power; brings back guests from previous episodes (monster bird, the Ice Apes); hopeful ending.

One thing I liked about this show is it was serialized, so try to keep them in order, Alex, if you transfer them. Good luck! Did you get your copies from the Sci-Fi Channel?

You can't beat Speed Racer for stilted dialogue.  I wonder what they sounded like in Japanese?  Same rapid fire meter, I wonder?  Ranma1/2, A number one, super best sex comedy, you bet!  What ever happened to 8 Man?  Not the new 8 Man that pops up from time to time but the old one!  He was an android that looked like Racer X with a big * on his chest, which he'd open up and pull out a cigarette which he'd smoke for energy.  I guess they wouldn't want to put that one over big with the kids.  But I loved it!  One episode had a race of super smart speaking dolphins.  You can't go wrong with talking wildlife, right gang?

See, the problem I have with "Batman Returns" is that the Penguin is so
badly done. Living in a sewer with a sea of penguins? Dripping black ink
from his mouth? What the heck? I thought Catwoman was well done aside
from the silly "brought back to life by supernatural cats" aspect, and of
course, Max Schreck was a great villain, more in line with the usual comic
villains than any of the other villains in the Batman movies. However,
something about the film really rubbed me the wrong way. "Sleepy Hollow,"
on the other hand, I think is a great film.

No, actualy I got them from one who sells POTA Videos. I forgot his name and e-mail address. It was someone that Brian (apemania) directed me to a long time ago. His e-mail was DrZaius something. He not only had the Cartoons but T.V. Series and many exclusives as well. I got tons of Videos from him. The Cartoon Series came in three VHS Tapes and seemed to be all in order, but I'll have to double check. Thanks for the list.

It could have been Brian who gave me the e-mail to this person, I'm not sure, but it was someone on the list. It was so long ago.

Speed Racer is great, no question.
The same creator's of Speed Racer also created Star Blazers. It's the same type of animation. But the difference between Speed Racer and Star Blazers. Star Blazers is a continuing saga of 26 episodes for each series. In other words you have to see all 26 to fully understand the tale. As Speed Racer was a different adventure every day cut into two parts. Only two episodes to understand the tale. Then came a different adventure the next time around.

And while Speed Racer is about Racing, Star Blazers is about saving planet earth. Very cool, and very well told. And that's why you see Speed Racer Videos for 10 bucks a pop, and Star Blazer videos for 20 bucks a pop. The full box set with a complete series of 26 episodes is 125 bucks a set. It's a big difference, and worth it, as the tale of Star Blazer is far out!

Best.
Al

Yes, Samurai Jack is cool.  I keep forgetting to watch it, though.  They only show it once a week.

Not true.
Yes, it's regular night it Mondays, but I saw in on Sunday as well last week.
And after checking the guide it was on yesterday also.  So check it out tonight.
If you miss it, try and remember to catch it again on Sunday night.  It is an interesting blend of styles.  For those of you who don't know it's about a samurai warrior who defeated a demon, but was zapped into the future by him, where the demon runs everything.  It sounds serious, but it's really more comedy than drama.

One thing I liked about this show is it was serialized, so try to keep them in order, Alex, if you transfer them. Good luck! Did you get your copies from the Sci-Fi Channel?

No, actualy I got them from one who sells POTA Videos. I forgot his name and e-mail address. It was someone that Brian (apemania) directed me to a long time ago. His e-mail was DrZaius something. He not only had the Cartoons but T.V. Series and many exclusives as well. I got tons of Videos from him. The Cartoon Series came in three VHS Tapes and seemed to be all in order, but I'll have to double check. Thanks for the list.

It could have been Brian who gave me the e-mail to this person, I'm not sure, but it was someone on the list. It was so long ago.

Yeah, that's the guy.  Kamn he calls himself.  He not only sells the cartoon series in three volumes, but also the TV series on 7 tapes, the TV "movies, a movie trailer tape that includes Mego commercials, a commentary tape that includes Roddy McDowall's commentary on the Sci-Fi Channel, Heston on SNL, all '98 AMC commentary, another tape of the Japanese "Time of the Apes," "Battle" with the extra footage, and he has most of the movie scripts and TV series scripts including those not filmed.

I have a price list from him.

It seems they are all in order, even down to the very day of broadcasting, pretty amazing. I told you it's been a while since I've seen them.
I just opened my POTA Vault and alerted the Apache Choppers over head that I would be opening the vault so no one would get hurt. :o)

Two dates seem to be repeated but the episodes are in broadcast order.

Rod Serling said in at least one or two interviews that he was first approached to adapt Boulle's "Planet of the Apes" into a movie by an outfit called King Brothers (Producer brothers Frank, Herman and Maurice King.  I believe they worked out of England.)  However, I don't know where Serling got this from, because no one has ever confirmed that story.  I'd forget it as just ancient mis-information.

That was nice of you. I also got the new MAD magazine. Though they got a
few things wrong, funny stuff. Lots of stuff going on in the background. Too
much to list here. Obviously some Ape fans over there. Of the original, not
the new one, or they would have watched it close enough to get more things
right. One interesting point. You only ever see chimps and orangs on the

I can't wait to see what they contain, most likely the 5021 year will appear when Leo encounters the Oberon. At least then my domain name will make a lot more sence to those who vist. :o)

Brian Penikas said they had gorillas when they shot (maybe just a couple).
We assume there's some on there, if not that scene, somewhere on the ship.

Speaking of the PPGs one of the apes honored by being placed in the backgrounds in MAD was Mojo Jojo!  Koko and Snowflake were there as well.  And speaking of Snowflake, did anyone notice that Ari's father was an albino?  Blue eyes and no pigment in his fingernails.

      Subject: Happy Halloween!
      .html
      .html
It's a certain director's favorite holiday. If I was to choose one word to describe Tim Burton's career it would be "Halloween" (I know some of you have another word in mind, but let's be nice). His movies reflect the joys of scary movies and masquerades. So I thought it would be appropriate to quote Burton from October's "Starlog", which I think is the best interview with him about his "Apes" movie.

ON THE TASK: " Of course I was daunted...You would have a better chance of surviving jumping off the Empire State Building than doing a remake of POTA".

HIS TAKE: "I don't consider the movie either left or right-wing. To me it's more representative of our present fragmented society... part of what made the first one a classic is that the issues were so clearly delineated. I could rattle off the issues of the late'60's in a second. But today's problems aren't as clearly defined. Globalization, instant access to information - which are good in some respects - also create a weird fragmentation, and involve issues that could end up being scary. That's why I threw in so many cross-references - to portray the way things are now".

" I like people to act like animals. Something about that appeals to me. I don't know if it's because of the struggle between my emotional and intellectual life - the primal vs. the intellectual - which are always at odds with themselves, but I like representations of animal people".  (Note: Just as Burton's characters act more like apes than the ones in the originals, his "Batman" characters also go in that direction. Bruce Wayne sleeps hanging upside down, Catwoman cleans herself (and has 9 lives); Penguin was literally raised by penguins and loves raw fish)

"The ultimate idea in the POTA mythology is that the apes act like people and the people act like apes. in our film, you're looking at an early time where some ape factions want to maintain their ape-like purity, while others choose to act EXACTLY like humans. The Tim Roth character supports this purity. Some of the more affluent apes imitate human behavior (the dinner party). There's fragmentation even in that society. The apes are still making the transition, and the humans haven't quite gotten their self-esteem completely destroyed yet".

THE CHARACTERS: "I felt a little something for each character. In a weird way, even though Leo is the most normal, he's like the ABNORMAL character here. And the same goes for Daena...she's the odd person out. And since the movie is all about reversals, each character in my mind had a lovely, sad quality to them - a certain burden to them."

"I related to Ari because she reminds me, in her own culture, of a lost soul, a person who has strong feelings but hasn't found her place in the world. I call them "animal people" - people who respond to animalsbecause they're sensitive and glean sensitivity off of animals. There's a beautiful, sad quality to those people, a bittersweet quality".

THE ENDING: "Just when you think you've figured it out...  That's the nature of the material, and I went with it. Even though I don't think of sequels and stuff like that, this kind of material requires you to consider the big picture. I may never show that big picture - maybe nobody will - but it's the kind of material that makes you think in a circular way".

Well, satisfactory or not, I think that's about all we're going to get out of him and this is probably a preview of the commentary track. If it was up to me I'd pair him with someone else to bounce off of (his best track was for "Pee Wee", because Paul Reubens was there). Burton's hero Vincent Price is on "Biography" tonight.

You may be right.  I just read an article that argued that because Snowflake's eyes are blue, that he's not a true albino, but a throwback to rare white gorillas.  So rare in fact, that there are only two know in existence.

If were going off on dialogue, what about Limbo?
Why would an ape refer to humans as ladies and gentlemen?
Seems like the apes considered humans anything but gentle.
And it's a good thing Sandar doesn't invite slave traders to
the dinner parties.  Suppose he said to Bon, "How about
      seconds, Honey . . . Chop chop!"

This is not the first and won't be the last argument like this. Just the

        went before.

I have to say that Danny Elfman's music for PotA2001 is top notch, but in
the areas of make-up, coherent storyline, high quality performances and
overall character development, I would have to say the classic Time of the
        Apes wins hands down.

I can't wait to see this, Alex!  I was going to ask you about the clips on the site..especially the dinner scene one...love the look on Attar's face, and Thade's, as well, when Marky walks into the room...gets me laughing every time 'cause you know that s**t is going to hit the fan!

I'll have two separate collections, POTA Classic and POTA Remake. I also have Battle for the Planet of the Apes (uncut version) on Japanese Laser Disc that I'll be trasfering over to DVD as well as the POTA Cartoons.

In the end, it will not only be in better quality, but a hell of a lot easier for me to make mutiple copies to offer on the site, than making mutiple copies on VHS. You can burn a DVD, but you can't burn a VHS. (well you can if you had matches) :o)

I didn't notice this before, but here's a early review of the DVD for you.

Thanks for the heads up Rory.
Fox did claim that this was the latest cutting edge in DVD.
Now I can see why, can't wait to get this baby.

        Best.

P.S. I guess for those who didn't like the movie, it will be the same as I felt about Phantom Menace. Loved the DVD, didn't love the movie.

        Oh well..
