I can't wait to see this, Alex!  I was going to ask you about the clips on the site..especially the dinner scene one...love the look on Attar's face, and Thade's, as well, when Marky walks into the room...gets me laughing every time 'cause you know that s**t is going to hit the fan!

Lynne

Yeah, I'm pumped myself.

But nothing on the official DVD releases will be included in my DVDs.

Just rare POTA spots. I don't want to go to POTA prison. :o)

Best.

That is just what it is!!!  Christmas ornament film making!!  I might have to borrow that one! LOL!!  Beautiful to look at but hollow inside.   I can't think of anyone else who does it this way...well, maybe.  Lucas seemed to catch it for Episode One.

Alright! A trailer for "Dr. Dolittle 2" . I always connected the two this summer because they're both Jacobs remakes.

They ALL do that now, if the budget is big enough. The irony is Lucas bought his independence from the studios but plays it just as safe. Can't really blame them, they've got a lot of mouths to feed on their payrolls. And the public doesn't exactly reject this stuff.

You can tell DVD is going mainstream. Trailers for other movies are starting to appear, and more pan and scan versions are coming out. Soon it'll be just like VHS. They'll decide Joe Sixpack doesn't like widescreen and those'll be few and far between.

I bought the Nov. MAD mag w/ the POTA 2001 parody in it today. First time I've
bought that mag since about 1977!
I wonder if they originally planned an 'APE' cover before opting for the
patriotic cover they ran with.

Yes, I love the soundtrack to 2001! The percussion is very awesome in the
begining. That's why I got the VINYL! Great things come on vinyl, you know.

Well, I think that Apes68 is superior is character developement. The
character developement is spectacular. The make-up in 2001 I think is much
better, except for Ari. She looks like stink. The storyling -I THINK- plays
out nice in both of the movies.

Anyway, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes beats out both of them.

I bought the Nov. MAD mag w/ the POTA 2001 parody in it today. First time I've
bought that mag since about 1977!
I wonder if they originally planned an 'APE' cover before opting for the
patriotic cover they ran with.
I still haven't picked up my copy yet, but will this weekend along with the cinefex mag. I've a very busy week.

Can't wait to get it.

Hey, on that review: what's a "non-linear timeline map"? I still say they should've included the Fox special with the parody montage. Maybe they couldn't get the clearances, 'cause it also had a montage of Burton's career with clips from other studios.

Rory, I picked up "The Studio" at a used book store. I like how in the Cast of Characters Natalie Trundy is listed as "Arthur Jacobs' friend". Arthur is listed as "Dr. Dolittle producer" so I guess that was still when they thought it would be a big hit (no mention of that trifle "Planet of the Apes").                              - - - Jeff

Have no fear, that will be included in my DVD. Along with the 30. min Specials of "E!" "Inside Entertainment" and "MTV Special".

According to the review there's only 6 T.V. Spots on the Official DVD while I have over 20 of them. Plus tons of more stuff. I should have the DVDs ready by Christams.

Best.

P.S. As for Movie adds on DVD, that's not too bad as long as they put adds to good movies. As I've said to Mike not too long ago, I hope they put the teaser to Star Wars Episode II on it. Maybe in an "easter egg."

That would be brilliant!
Of course. :o)

I have to say that Danny Elfman's music for PotA2001 is top notch, but in
the areas of make-up, coherent storyline, high quality performances and
overall character development, I would have to say the classic Time of the
Apes wins hands down.

This is obviously a joke.  POTA 2001 may not be that good, but it's better than Time of the Apes.

You can tell DVD is going mainstream. Trailers for other movies are starting to appear, and more pan and scan versions are coming out. Soon it'll be just like VHS. They'll decide Joe Sixpack doesn't like widescreen and those'll be few and far between.

Well, when they came out with the Special Edition of "Willy Wonka" and it was only in Pan & Scan, there was this incredible internet protest and now Warners is going back and doing a letterboxed version.  But, I agree it does look like DVD is becoming like VHS.  I had to rent the Pan & Scan "Cats and Dogs," but I really didn't mind.  (I didn't think the movie was that great, BTW.)

The writer mentions at the end how much of a hit PLANET was, and that thankfully for Jacobs the profits on PLANET weren't used to make up for loses on DOLITTLE (business!).

I got the latest newsletter from the Motion Picture Academy today. On Nov. 16 they will premiere "a newly restored 70 mm print with 6 - track stereo sound" of Franklin Schaffner's "Patton". That flick gave him his first large measure of respect (many Oscars) after a distinguished career in the Golden Age of Live TV, a few features and that cute children's film "Planet of the Apes". He went on to do other stuff, including "The Boys From Brazil", which I hear is slated to be remade (he just rolled over in his grave over POTA 2001 and now he has turn over again). Anyway, the screening will be hosted by Karl Malden. All for $5. Only in California!

Sounds like a new DVD to me. Last month the Academy screen ed a restored print of Fox's "All That Jazz" and I know they are priming a big DVD release for that. Aren't Fox DVDs wonderful? I'm glad I don't already have a "Patton" DVD, aren't you, Rory?

He went on to do other stuff, including "The Boys From Brazil", which I hear is slated to be remade (he just rolled over in his grave over POTA 2001 and now he has turn over again). Anyway, the screening will be hosted by Karl Malden. All for $5. Only in California!

Sounds like a new DVD to me. Last month the Academy screen ed a restored print of Fox's "All That Jazz" and I know they are priming a big DVD release for that. Aren't Fox DVDs wonderful? I'm glad I don't already have a "Patton" DVD, aren't you, Rory?

You wise-ass!!    Actually, NO, I didn't bother buying the "Patton" Special Edition DVD.  Why?  Because I bought "Patton" TWICE on Laserdisc, and they weren't cheap and one of the laserdiscs includes 5.1 Dolby Digital sound plus the Frank Schaffner tribute documentary where Jerry Goldsmith talks about how Schaffner told him not to use so many piccolos in the PLANET main title cue, and how glad Goldsmith was that he got pulled from scoring BENEATH to go do "Patton."  Good stuff.  That documentary is included with the DVD.  You might want to rent it, Jeffery!  BTW, it was PLANET that put Schaffner on the map and got him "Patton."

Jeffery, why don't you try to find out when Fox will do a Five-Star DVD Special Edition of PLANET, and when the hell is "Journey To The Center of the Earth" coming out on DVD?

Oh boy!!  Less than twenty days now to the APES DVDs!!!  Is everybody excited?

Just picked up and read the MAD magazine issue of POTA 2001.
I loved the art work, fantastic. As for the rest of it, it wasn't even funny at all but rather very negative. There's a fine line between being negatively funny and just being all out negative and MAD magazine does a fine job of crossing that line.

        c) "Journey to the Center of the Earth" will have to wait until Zanuck remakes it, AFTER he does the "Apes" sequel

        d) Yes, young man, I am most impatient about the arrival of the new DVDs but I do NOT get "excited"

        e) "The Studio" is COOL! It came out in, what, 1968? And it quotes the Doors' "Twentieth Century Fox". Had a spare 48 minutes or so yesterday and I was going through some old VHS
tapes that I'd taped of TV. I came across 'Escape From Tomorrow' and got
caught up watching it again. This time I made the following observations:

Near the beginning when the chimp kid goes back to the village to tell his
father the prefect what he'd seen. They hop on horses to check it out. There
is a long shot of the posse riding towards the crash site, but it's actually a
shot of Urko's troop as his white horse clearly visible. When they arrive,
there is no white horse to be seen. Obviously they used stock footage of apes
        on horseback.

When Virdon and Burke are looking at the Farrow's 'old story book' they see a
        picture of a very futuristic ( Logan's Run-esque ) New York dated 2305. So
according to this timeline, NYC was still in tact by this time. Has this been
covered before? Virdon also exclaims that the book was printed 500 years after
they left Earth. That means they left earth in 1805. It appears that 2000
years of jet lag messes with your logic.

In the scene when Zaius says goodnight to his house servant and says he's
going to read ( or something like that) he is wearing Knee high boots. He goes
to his office door and enters. When he moves inside, he is wearing regular,
Orang ape feet shoes. This is when Virdon and Burke take him hostage with the
grenade in order to rescue Galen. In the very next scene Zaius has the knee
        high boots on again.

Anyone else got bloopers from the TV show? I guess the 'eagle eyes' will be
        out on Nov. 20.

        Monsters Inc Teaser Trailer Problems
        Fri, Nov 02, 01 09:29:15 PM EDT

We've been receiving many irate emails from fans who have gone to their local theaters to see Monsters Inc., only to find that the teaser trailer wasn't shown. There has been no official word on why this is the case, but as soon as we learn more, we'll let you know. As one member of the TFN Staff put it, "It would be a good idea to call the theater and check if the trailer is playing".

If I remember correctly, Pete even exclaims "Twenty-five oh-three?!?" or
something like that. Ken's definitely right about it not fitting into movie

That's why it's best to look at the TV series as an entity BASED on the movie series.  Of course, fans like Matt don't agree with this at all, but then to paraphrase Brent in BENEATH, "That's their insanity."

I did a timeline for "Ape Chronicles" back in 1993, 500 years ago, that takes that into account. It works for the first two movies but history is changed in the last 3. As for those other bloopers, what do you expect for an episode a week. That's even less time than Burton had.

Well, actually it does in my timeline. I had my timeline here in the postings a few months ago, and as a matter of fact, I went thru the archives and dug it up to help Rory awhile back when he was saying that there are indeed 2 seperate Apes timelines. Look under the subject The Original Planet of the Apes- A Little Help For Rory (I believe that's what it was called,) it should be in there somewhere...Now I'm not saying my timeline is chisled in stone by any means, but it shows how the tv series "can" be worked into the timeline established in the movies.

I'll bet Dr. Dolittle (business) eventually made it's money back, but that was probably just last week, but, hey, it was no "Cleopatra."

I was fooling around with my CD-R burner and ended up making a POTA VCD that's playable on a DVD player.
I took the full collection of Quick Time Videos from the official web site and placed them all on a VCD. Now I can watch all the videos of the official web site on my television set. The total running time is 30 mins. Pretty Damn Cool.
I'm going to do this for the Episode II clips from StarWars.com and cap it off with the teaser set to appear on the web this week.

This is not for sale, but rather for my own private use.
I'll have my DVD recorder in just under a week and get started on exlusive spots shortly after.

        I'll keep you all posted.

.htmlI finally went out and got the Mad magazine with the parody of POTA 2001.   While I thought it was funny (I especially like the guest appearances of Mojo Jojo and Curious George, looking up Lisa Marie's dress.), it can't hold a candle to the March 1973 Mad issue parody "The Milking of the Planet That Went Ape" starring Rowdy McDowelstick.  What can I say?  I'm just Classic Apes all the way.

What I thought was really funny was the "What the Film 2001 Predicted/What the Year 2001 Actually Delivered" piece.

2001 the Film:  Dark, vast spaces totally devoid of any human life.
2001 the Year:  Theaters showing "Moulin Rouge."

Also while I was at Borders I looked at the latest issue of Cinefantastique.  Their review of the new APES was that it was not only mediocre, but a crime!  Yep, I know I felt ripped-off.  I'm still not sure I'll even bother getting the DVD!

E Online spilled the beans on what happened to Burton and Lisa Marie. It seems she and Curious George fell hard for each other while doing the Mad magazine parody and heartbroken Tim grabbed the nearest chimp he could find, Helena B. That's life in Hollyweird.

I'm as sentimental about "The Planet That Went Ape" as the next guy but I thought the new parody was funnier. Speaking of parody, go to your local comic book shop and pick up the new "Simpsons" Pop Up People with the "Apes" musical characters.

I finally went out and got the Mad magazine with the parody of POTA 2001.

Don't read the above, Alex.  Oops!  Too late.

Already have. And here's hoping that Playmates do action figures from
        the same episode.

Parodies aside, I agree with Rory, that a planet of the apes film cannot
afford to be made to look ridiculous.

Every film has suffered from this in some form. But they knew from the
beginning that the premise of apes talking was so incredulous that the makeup
had to be good enough to pull it off. Even the first film had a slip when
some kooks went for a tension breaker and let the 3 monkeys joke slide.
Luckily the story material was stong enough to survive the tongue in cheek
humor. But they all had problems. Beneath had the bad masks. Escape had
the gorilla, and tread perilously close to getting cutesy. Conquest had the
orangs and moments of bad acting. And Battle . . . well, too many things to
        list here.

I think that's where they went astray with the new one. Aside from not
having a stronger story, they went for that sort of humor, which never should
have been in there in the first place. In their attempt to appease the fans
with bits of 'omage, they paid homage to the flaws as well. Bad move. Keep
it real I say. If you're going to have humor in it, don't go for one liners,
or in jokes that make the audience conscious of them. Just make it a truly
humous situation. 'Human see human do', only goes so far.

ALL THEY NEEDED WAS 3 FREAKEN OUTS!
        3 FREAKEN OUTS!

Yeah, the Yankee's could have won the pennant...again.
Kim Hunter could have invited me to spend the holidays with her.
Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes could have been a really great film.
When these things happen I'll know I've died and gone to heaven.
Except for the Yankees, they can't win every year!  Give someone else a turn.
But since I live on earth for now I'll just be happy with what I've got.
        It's been a good year.

I love the way that the TV series fits into the circular timeline established
