.htmlHi Patrick - - -
This is Jeff Krueger. I think we talked about your chronology a while
back. That would be great if you could publish your book. There's been a lot
of controversy about how to do that. Fox has been very strict since this new
movie. If you presented your material as nonfiction and unofficial instead
of as a novel I think you could do it your way and they couldn't touch you.
Such as those "Science of 'Star Wars' books and what not. But it sounds
like you want to give the characters dialogue and so forth and that would be
more difficult.

I think the OK is tentative while they hammer out the script. They probably have the dough for a screenwriter and will decide based on the result. That DVD review I mentioned yesterday (dvdangle.com) said that Burton explained in his commentary that he knew where the ending is leading and someone else will continue it, but he's got it mapped out. Sounds to me that Burton might be back as a producer with someone else directing. I'm for that. Burton can help shape the visuals but someone else can hopefully tell an involving story. And if Burton's the producer, he's "back" and those actors whose contracts said they'd return if Burton did are stuck. It's like the 3rd "Batman' where Burton was a producing figurehead (and made some nice dough). - - - - Jeff

Well, I haven't seen anywhere else on the web any news of a POTA 2, so I guess it's still wait and see time.
-- Rory
I think it could be true.
Because way back when epiosode 1 was being created, there was word that episode 2 would be coming out in 2003. That's why you see that after my countdown was finished, I went ahead with countdown to 2003.
But then removed it because no official word was ever given. Just news on the web way back then.
But if it is 2003, I would think that they would give word by now. Just to build up the hype for those who want to learn how exactly Thade ruled the planet.
Best.

Well, that's a good question. I think their point was that after thirty years the originals had become dated to the point of being campy. A lot of that is due to the decline of the sequels, especially budget wise. Of course the whole point of it is lost if you make the remake campy. But then again, I don't think their true intention was to make a better Apes, but to make a bigger pile . . . of money! Or crap depending on your point of view. And like a good ape, I'd like to fling it at them. That's what they're in business for. Not to make art. To make money. Of course with the budget they had they could have done both. But maybe they can't tell the difference. Is Burton's rep just more Hollywood hype. Hard to tell when you measure success in money. But maybe being Mr. nice guy is only good for getting actors to work with you, and not studios.<.html <.html

The point is that it raises interest in the entire POTA franchise, which can
only be seen as a positive. If it wasn't for the new film, I doubt if we
would be seeing things like the TV series on DVD, the onslaught of new
merchandise, books like POTA: Revisited, the repackaged BEHIND DVD, etc.

Well I've just picked up the POTA 2001 DVD, and I
must say it is awesome! Step aside Terminator II Special Edition, POTA is the
new king in DVD!
DISC 2
Incredible, the multi angle scenes are amazing. You
can watch 4 vidoes at one time and chose the audio of any of the four.
TONS of multi angle segments. Including behind
the scenes of Tim directing and screen tests. TONS of them.
6 great documenturies plus the HBO Special. Music
Videos, T.V. Spots, some never seen before. The extended scenes are nothing
we haven't seen before because they are the same scenes but added lines later
deleted in the final cut. And a whole lot more!
And just when you think you've seen it all, there's
DISC 1
On my God!
You have the option of watching the movie as you
would any DVD movie, then there's the ENHANCED OPTION. Where the movie is being
played but through out the movie a PICTURE IN PITURE pops up and you see behind
the scenes and documenturies highlighting that scene that your watching at the
same time.
Then if that isn't enough, a symbol of the Oberon
appears, and when you hit enter. You see a full behind the scenes feature
of that scene. When the feature is finished, your returned right back where you
left off in the movie.
This is incredible, no wonder the DVD reviews are
so damn great!
I wasn't able to get the DVD T.V. Series yet, I'll
have to wait until the 20th like everyone else. But looking foward too
it!
Best.

Pretty great, Rory, I must say.
The picture is crystal clear, and the 5.1 surround
sound is great. Even the darker scenes in the Jungle and Ape City are
crystal clear. A lot more sharper than I've seen yet. And I have over 100 movies
on DVD.
Movies on DVD always look a lot shaper then they do
in the theatres, but this is even more beyond that. I'm
impressed. When you see the Oberon in Space, the details are outstanding. I

Believe me, KEN, you will be impressed with the
way you can watch this movie with the latest tech in DVD. Picture in picture
and documentaries as well. The documentaries you see in DISC 2 are not
the same as the ones in DISC 1, they are all new, just for the movie as you
watch it.
The Matrix has something like this, a rabbit
appears and when you enter you get a documentary for that segment of the film,
then it returns you to the movie. But the docs that they show are the same ones
you would see if you just choose documentaries. But the POTA ones are all new
and with the added feature, picture in picture.
Pretty amazing.
Best.

heavily from "lord of the Rings". What goes around comes around.

For the record, I'm looking forward to seeing "Harry

directed by Chris Columbus that I've completely liked.

Did you hear there's a new "Matrix" on DVD on
Tuesday, a 2 disc set that's ALL extras (like "Behind the POTA")? It's called
"The Matrix Revisited".

Thanks for the enthusiastic ( I would
have been disappointed with anything less) review Alex but it just reminds
me of Rory's ( I think) quote a while back. " A turkey with all the
trimmings". Possibly with the same effect as
turkey? ZZZZZzzzzzzzzz
Having said that, I will of coarse be buying
it. I think in Fox's file on 'POTA target audience/sucker' there's a
picture of me. Best, KEN
Believe me, KEN, you will be impressed with the
way you can watch this movie with the latest tech in DVD. Picture in picture
and documentaries as well. The documentaries you see in DISC 2 are
not the same as the ones in DISC 1, they are all new, just for the movie as
you watch it.
The Matrix has something like this, a rabbit
appears and when you enter you get a documentary for that segment of the film,
then it returns you to the movie. But the docs that they show are the same
ones you would see if you just choose documentaries. But the POTA ones are all
new and with the added feature, picture in picture.
Pretty amazing.
Best.

I don't think it's campy.

I used to think there was something there, but considering what a shitty year 2001 has turned out to be, and what a disappointment the new movie was, well. . . . I don't want to think about it any more. I prefer to just remember '68 and wonder, "What happened?"

Heston is just being Heston in PLANET. It's quintessential Chuck. I get a little pissed when people knock Heston's PLANET performance. Who else would have been better? He was perfect, and what happened to him in the movie couldn't have happened to a 'nicer' guy.

I sure as hell don't think the understated approach works when you wind up on a planet of apes. We all saw that with Wahlberg.

Wahlberg was a nighmare in POTA 2001, he played every scene as if he
lands on a planet of the apes every week! I can't help but think that
a much older and more seasoned actor would have lent so much more to
the part, but then again with a script that dire I don't think any
actor could have saved Wahlbergs part.
In fact I think that this re-imagining concept failed on every level,
with the benefit of hindsight I would now have preferred a scene by
scene exact remake. I remember reading an article in Ape Chronicles
(remember that) from many years ago, this was while the remake was
still only being talked about by Fox. It said how exciting it will be
to see the space shuttle crashlanding in the desert, and to see the
astronaut(s) finally discovering that the planet was Earth. Then
using some fantastic ILM style special effect for the Statue of
Liberty or similar type scene at the end.
Yeah I know an exact remake would have not gone done well with
the 'don't mess with a classic you'll only fail' brigade, but hell
look what we ended up with!!

Well, the explained ending on the official site
still sucks in my point of view. And Tim is not clear when it comes to the
ending. He just calls it a reversal and leaves it at that on the
DVD.
The picture in picture and docs during the movie
don't say anything as well, but they do take you behind the scenes and show the
statue of Thade with it's creator, pretty damn cool.
Picture in Picture and Doc are not that constant
during the movie. But there are plenty there to keep you
entertained.

Well, I got tired of getting those stupid 'street team' e-mails about two days into the thing and un-subscribed myself. I just got an e-mail from Amazon today that both DVDs, new movie and TV series, were mailed today. I paid for two-day shipping so hopefully I'll have them by Monday or Tuesday. However, I've been planning on watching the blessed original movie, which I haven't seen in months, on Thanksgiving night whilst I digest my turkey, so watching that new movie again will have to wait until the next day. No, they supplied some links to sci-fi
websites and I just let them know about it. It wasn't a lie, I was excited about
the DVD and I've been promoting "Apes" a long time. It's about time I got
something free. I did have to sacrifice one e-mail address so I had to give them
Rory. Enjoy the junk mail, old friend and, remember, if it looks like a virus
delete it! (Just kidding).
So far I've kinda flipped through the movie.
I'm no expert on DVD quality, I don't know from "reference quality" but it looks
fine. The more I see this movie the more it's like an episode of the TV show,
from stealing horses to the underplaying of the ship crash to the layout of the
city to the underacting. The soul of this movie is still Ari and the music.I
think it plays better on TV given it's storytelling inequities but visually it
looses it's impact. Ape City looks kinda muddy but that's the film not the DVD.
Oh, and they DID change the corporate montage ("Get into it") but they used
clips from the same old movies (X-Men, X-Files, etc.) No "Apes" clips. But they
did put some clips from "Big Momma's House" in there including a close-up of
Paul (Limbo)
Giamatti.

No one really e-mails to the street team
group. It's obvious everyone's there just to get a free DVD. I don't think the
DVD will change anyone's opinion of the film but it seems less dire on TV.
That's where the movie belongs, not on a big screen in a group situation. But I
think once you get used to what is and what it isn't it's fun. I'm interested to
hear your comments, Rory, once you can scrutinize it. I noticed the headrest on
the pod is a big peace symbol. Subtle, Burton.

It would have been interesting if they had done what the game writers did and
borrow ideas from both the movie and the book. <.html

Haven't got to "Monkey Face" yet but I am
blown away by these documentaries! They aren't just footage slapped together,
they are polished films. They also borrow liberally from the originals. At one
point, Elfman talks about the score for the original and they show the hunts
from both the old and the new. They play the Goldsmith music during the stunt
test (one guy is wearing a shirt with Caesar, Lisa and Cornelius on it). I love
the part where they are teaching the real chimp to wear his astronaut clothes.
There's one shot where they tell him "Thumbs Up!", "Hands on Hips!" and it's
just like, he takes the orders and it's like a guy in makeup - - but it's a real
chimp. This stuff is gold. I'm glad they decided to document this shoot.
And the different tests are so cool. Well, back to the DVD.

Speaking of Giamatti.
Check out the documentary "Mokey Face"
Giamantti is watching the original POTA while getting his makeup on.
Giammantti is the funniest guy in all of those documentaries and screen

The "extended scenes" were a

Also be sure to check out Fox on Sunday

I'm sure they'll have the DVD commercials during
the Simpsons and other shows that night.
In the extended scenes they even show the
Simpsons when the Oberon is viewing all those transmisions from earth, from
all time. And Leo saying, "A billion channels and nothing to watch".

S***! I forgot about that. How am I going to
get through all this tonight? By the way I'm at the part where Giamatti is
watching the original "Apes". Giamatti seems to be the biggest fan. In the
'making of' book it says he had all the toys and everything. And also Michael
Clarke Duncan. They are the two big fans of the cast. Also, in the current
"Entertainment Weekly" (with "Lord of the Rings") it mentions director Frank
Darabont ("Shawshank Redemption", "Green Mile") has all the Mego figures in his
office. I understand he was in the running to direct "Apes" before Burton got
the nod. - - - - Jeff

Well, the guy that produced it, David Prior,
did Fox's "Fight Club" DVD. Last year "Entertainment Weekly" picked that as the

set as among the 10 best DVD box

Yeah, Burton explains in
the DVD that he didn't expect to top the original. But wanted to leave it open
to thought and not explained. That way, if Fox wanted to make a sequel, they
could go in any direction why wanted, as far as time, and
storyline.
And it's true. You can
go from Leo trying to prevent the ultimate fate as in Back to the Future to
continuing the story from where they left off, or even go back to when this
ulternate future begins and how.
Heck, they don't even
have to deal with getting the time correct because no direct time was given.
Leo's clock counts backward when he returns but suddenly that scene cuts away as
he's traveling through time and space.
No 3978 to 3955 problem will occur here.
It seems that Burton as an Apes fan knows all to well about that himslef. This
is realy something, so much hat tiping torwards the original
POTA.
Best.
Al
P.S. Burton blew me away in
his commentary, because one of the things he says, is that there's never a
clear anwser on life's biggest questions. Because man spends more time
contradicting himself than giving a clear anwser. That is so
true!

thinking.

Sometimes obscenities best describe things (the new movie for

And the original would have been silly if Liberty had a chimp face too.
I mean, how did the chimp face get there?
Is it just a coincidence that Thade wore the same clothes as Lincoln and
somebody decided to erect a monument in the same place with all the same
Washington landmark coincidentally built by apes. What a crock!
I'm still struggling to allow that to make sense.
I guess if Thade landed in a post germ warfare earth and took over from
there it could work but nothing much else in the film was explained, so I
doubt they will explain this any better.
The ending is silly (but I hope, as usual, that I am proven wrong).

Yep... it is an awesome trailer. I'm not to
fond of Hayden's acting though, so hopefully he is good through the whole movie
and not like that. I'm really anticipating this film.

What was POTA 2001's opening day gross
again?
I believe it was 68. something.
Has anyone seen the new SW trailer yet, Forbidden Love?
It's at the official site now, sameone that will be shown during
Harry Potter.
This trailer is the best yet, and what a great storyline.
Best.

Well, they use the f -word in the POTA DVD
extras, so

I
must say, the word Joe used is VERY tame compared to some of the language we
let fly from time to time in this group.
Sometimes obscenities best describe things (the new movie for
example).
This
is a fairly democratic group and you are the only one who has complained about
the use of the word "dick".
If
anyone else is offended please speak up and we shall analyse the
results.

You say it only by what you
write. I'm not one of these sentives, but I do have a big thing
about language, grammer as well. But, that's my problem.

The Adam Rifkin and Oliver Stone versions
just had the Statue of Liberty at the end. Our friend Chris Columbus ("Harry
Potter") initiated the idea of ending with an ape face on the Statue. it
apparently stuck. An early draft of the Burton version (I think post-Broyles)
shows an ape filled Yankee Stadium and pulls back to show an ape face on the
Statue of Liberty. I guess that later "evolved" into Ape Lincoln.

I'm trying to find a way to view either of the new Episode 2 trailers but I
can't get quicktime 5 to download without it freezing on me. My computer is
getting old. If anyone has a way to view the Ep 2 trailers without quicktime
let me know. Thanks!

I wish
he could have shown a bit of that in the new movie. But let's see what he
has to say first hey Al?
Michael
Man, you wouldn't believe the things he
says. Including about those who have commented about the movie.
I tell you, the man is a freaken genius, he
has such an amazing way at looking at things. And the way he says it, it really
does make you think.
Not only is it great, but very
educational, you (in general) can learn a lot from Tim Burton. Best
Commentary ever.
Best.
