The book was re-released in the UK not so long ago, as part of the "SF
Masterworks" series, so shouldn't be too hard to find.

But back to Planet of the Apes - I meant to mention this ages ago, but
forgot. I just wanted to mention how cool it is that Boulle's novel is now
available as a "Penguin Classic" and also that the cover is more in keeping
with its status as a "classic novel" rather than a film-related book. The
cover is just a picture of an ape, rather than anything from or inspired by
the film.

And here's that cover I was talking about. Much better design I think.

I seem to remember reading somewhere an interview with Ray Harryhausen
concerning laserdiscs, in which he pointed out that yes, you can see matte
lines and whatever else, but that these films were meant to be watched and
enjoyed, not scrutinised frame by frame.

There was one movie Bay was going to do called "Phone Booth". It was his
way of doing a "small" movie and proving he's an "artist". In fact it was a
Fox movie and that's how he almost went on to "Apes". It was even going to
star Will Smith (I guess he mentally casts Smith in everything). Anyway, it
was supposed to take place just in a phone booth with a sniper ready to kill
the guy when he steps out of it. But Bay wanted to cut away from the booth
to other locations and "open up" the film. Eventually he left Fox over
"creative differences" and scuttled his "Apes" project. I can imagine "I Am
Legend" ending up the same way, starting as a gritty, small film before
getting overblown again.

The publisher said a while back that now that the Boulle book was back in
print as a tie-in to Burton's movie they were going to keep it in print as a
classic in it's own right. - - - Jeff

Rory,

I AM aware who Bill Blake is, you must not have read in our IM, because I said something like "..Other than playing Cornelius at car shows....." Then right after I typed that, you had your reply typed saying he was Cornelius at car shows in the 70's... So we both basically said it, but mine hit the screen first. Anyway, that;s beside the point here...BUT if there are any good stories to tell, then yes, I hope Jeff will share them with the group...

I'm guessing he's never heard of Paula Christ either
.

Yes I did.....Hell I even brought those two (and their interview/article from POTA magazine) up before in these postings...I mentioned them, and their thought on the subject when I tried to get the discussion going as to whether or not the Apes hieroglyphics had any meanings (as in can they be read.)

Just picked it up at Best Buy for $39.99
    Thanks Couger.

    This is really great!
And the quality is fantastic, I only wish they had special features. But on the other hand, having all 14 episodes on DVD is a special feature in itself. Never thought I'd see the day.

    Best.

Bill watched some of the TV eps on DVD with me and gave me a lot of tid bits as we watched. He pointed out when Roddy's double, Ron Stein, was on screen, which was a lot (including full face and even a word or two).

I do not knowthe man's name, but I am pretty sure Ron Stein was not McDowall's double. For one, Stein is stockier than that chimp double that is used in the Galen "action" scenes (running, etc..). Stein was a gorilla in many  episodes, including "The Trap", which coincidentally has both Stein and the Galen double in it. Now how can he be McDowall's double and a gorilla at the same time?? I am not saying I am right or anything here, but I am pretty sure Ron wasn't Roddy's double.

But, it is certain that Stein was an Ape and a human. He was, as you say, "fulll face" in "The Surgeon" episode as Lafer...

Me, too!  I really can't remember seeing them in the theatre at this time....all I remember is seeing Escape on TV.  Why couldn't they have released them before the new one came out?  I'm wondering who is doing the marketing for this now..the toys are crap, there was absolutely no tie-ins to clutter my shelf...Harry Potter is getting more tie-ins, and has been for months!

    Lynne (feeling cheated..or should I?)

Believe me you should feel cheated. Fox needs a new marketing staff. Hell, even I did a better job than thier internet staff did. Now that's really sad. %90 of my incoming e-mails was telling me that everyday.

    Best.

Look sir, Bill used to hang around on the set and he SAW Ron do the Galen dirty work. Footage would be shot at different times or different days and be intercut. They could probably cut all of Ron's footage together and create his own episode. The chimp costume isn't a good indicator of body shape. I've seen that at Bill's demonstrations.

As for Bill stories, I'll think about it.

The public is not really responding well to ape product, or at least the stores aren't ordering (a la the TV Show) so why should they go out of their way to put them in theatres (though I'd like to see them too).

Ron Harper told me that in "The Legacy" the "castle" where they store Virdon was the set of "Young Frankenstein. So, between that and the "Earthquake" city at Universal, 'The Legacy" is the most epic of the episodes.

The box for the Burton VHS says to go to the website if you're confused by the ending. Of course there you'll find the pat answer that drove Alex crazy. Talk about spin doctoring. That's like having to explain a joke. Whatever the sequel is like, I think they're going to play it safe with the ending next time. Too bad. Fox, we don't need "feel good" endings, just good ones.

He's familiar with the Fox Ranch and pointed out when the rock where Caesar had the council meeting in "Battle" was in the background. Most of the episodes had the same village redressed but the "Good Seeds" farm was separate. Bill had a field day with the farm apes' makeup because of the varied quality. He pointed out that the BART set in "The Trap" had set pieces from the 'Ape Management' in "Conquest" and "Battle".  The ship was boiler plate metal not "plywood" (a pet peeve of his). In "The Gladiator" it's the same arena used in the first 2 flicks which stayed around until the late '70's. The series added to it including the holding area for the combatants and an arch in the front. The arena was also used as the entrance to the 'Mountain City' in the 1977 pilot to the "Logan's Run" TV show. They went to Universal to shoot the destroyed city in "The Trap" 'cause that's where they had filmed "Earthquake".

The brown insert on Roddy's chimp suit wasn't leather like the other chimps', it was vinyl (Roddy McDowall #1).

                                                            - - - - Jeff

Excellent inside info there.  Fox should have hired him to do a running commentary for each episode.  (Cheap Fox bastards!)   I remember being able to spot Roddy's double all the time on the TV show AND in BATTLE.  Roddy also refused most of the time during the show to have his hands made up, so you'll notice he's wearing hairy gloves.  I can't believe that the arena part of Ape City stood from 1967 until the late seventies.  I wish it was still there.  Has Bill seen the Bank America commercial that's currently running that shows a bunch of kids at the rock pool where Taylor took his dip in PLANET?  Anyone else here spotted it?

Yes Lynne, you should.  The toys are crap.  I wanted to buy them but I just can't The Band-Aids I found were stuck on the top shelf where no kid will ever see them. Which does come in handy when I want more since no one knows they're there.  And the soaper sponges?  I never did see them in stores, though I think I've tracked the down on the net.  Did anyone ever see any collector cups?  I never did though I would have like one.  This whole thing hat been botched from the get go.  It as if they pulled the plug on the merchandise the minute the mixed reviews hit the newsstand.

.html Yeah, the Japanese seem to be the only ones to make an event movie out of POTA 2001, with premiums and a variety of merchandise. The Jun Planning figures are pretty cool. Much better detailed than the Hasbro ones. Although, I quite like the electronic Attar as a figure. I think the smaller Hasbro figures were a bit hit and miss, the 2nd wave is more consistent. It's like they didn't even design them with kids in mind as they have no 'play-abilty' compared to other boys' action figures on the market. I guess retail has been burned too many times with the likes of Godzilla, ID-4, SW:Ep1 and Jurassic Park and approach movie liscencing with caution. POTA 2001 did seem to have a decent amount of liscenced products though. Here in Australia, the film did quite well box office wise ( by comparison) but certainly wasn't the EVENT movie that was originally anticipated. By the way, hardly any of the new products were distributed down under other than the Hasbro figures which were a Toys R Us exclusive and extremely expensive. I don't think they've sold ANY since they were released in July. And Toys R Us hardly EVER discount their slow sellers to clear the shelves as they like to keep their shelves looking well stocked. They still have 'A Bug's Life' action figures at the price they were released at.

I think one of the reasons you see so much of Roddy's double is because the show was shot in the summer.  It must have been miserably hot.  The shoddy makeup was because first they didn't have budgets big enough, though the show was the most expensive on the air at the time, and they didn't have time to do lifemasks and sculpt appliances for each actor.  A guy playing an orangutan could have on James Whitmore's nose and Woodrow Parfrey's chin.  However, every so often there'd be a great makeup.  Check out Jay Robinson's 'Bandor' in "Tomorrow's Tide."

No, the US set isn't anamorphic, but I understand Region 4 DVDs of APES are, and now I guess is the region that Britian is in.  It's all mote if you don't have a 16X9 set, but as soon as I can get PLANET in anamorphic here in the US, a 16X9 TV will become a must.  That's why I don't mind that in might not be until 2003 that Fox puts it out in anamorphic here -- hopefully the TVs will be less!

.htmlWell, because my younger bother hadn't seen POTA 2001 yet, I had to show him it on DVD last night.  So, now I've seen it again.  My opinion of it hasn't changed one bit -- a bad movie.  I also thought there was too much music in it this time, and the Ari makeup. . . . what a mistake, but just one among many.

Oh well, the extras look cool, I guess.  I still need to listen to the Burton commentary.

Tonight I'll watch the original again and wash the new movie from my mind.  Happy turkey day everybody!

Nope, Britain's Region 2, but I guess that if they are anamorphic then all

Ari?  What about Leta?  Who the hell approved that?  Were they out of chin pieces that day or what!?!  You know a movie's got some serious problems when they let stuff like that slide.  You know everything one the screen goes through umpteen people first.  And why were Lisa Marie's teeth so big?

I think Region 4 is South America because where I read this was when someone in Argentina was saying they have it in anamorphic.  I think I read it in one of the reviews for POTA posted on IMDB.COM.

Bill told me that Roddy had a strict 8hour a day contract and to work longer than that caused trouble with the unions, etc. So probably they would shoot his dialogue first and whatever actions were left over the double did. Probably the worst I've seen is in "Up Above the World So High". Check out when they are building the glider. They even ZOOM IN on the double. That's a no - no, it draws attention as though it were a plot point (Look! Galen is gone, who is this imposter?). Roddy had had a cyst problem on "Conquest" (he talks about it on the DVD interview and that's why the limited hours and also insuring his face for $1 million.                                 - - - - Jeff

scrutinized on DVD ("whatever that is").                              - - -

Kim had a similar problem during the champagne scene in Escape.  They put a lip on the champagne glass so she could drink it without it getting it in the appliance.  Somehow it would anyway and they had to keep regluing it.  She ended up with a sore by her mouth which was treated with creams and antibiotics and in the end part of the appliance had to be cut away and they would shoot around it so it didn't show in the shots.

He was five years old when we both saw the original in 'Ape'ril of 1968 (I was eight).  His reaction was pretty much that it was no where near as good as the original, and that it had no depth or point to it.  He liked some of the music.

Well since we're on the issue of brothers.
My brother (3 years older than me) and I both grew up as Planet of the Apes Fans. And while I continued being a fan, he since has grown away from it. But I'll tell you how he felt about POTA 2001. He hated it, like you wouldn't believe. And felt insulted as a one time POTA fan.

The only thing he liked about it?
Talking Apes. That was it. :o)

When he first saw the trailer leading to the release, his reaction was...Where's Zira and Cornileus? Why is that human talking? What is this crap!?

I must admit, it was a funny moment.

    DEPTH!

It has the superficiality of a cable movie.
Anyone would think that Ted Turner was involved.

    Showtime goes Ape.

My brother never was much of an Apes fan.  He like the original but didn't think much of the sequels, though he thinks Nova's a hottie, no augment there.  He thought POTAY2K1 was lame.  There seems to be a consensus forming here.  Are you listening FOX? Apes fans didn't want your Gorilliator!  We can think!  We can reason.

I loved his concept of Wahlberg and the lake.
He says in his comentary that the scene with Wahlberg and the egg shaped pod is like being reborn in a new world.

Like a child being born for the first time.
Listen to the comentary and you'll learn A LOT about the movie and his vision.

But that concept of Wahlberg coming out of an egg and sheding his skin (removing his jacket) is mind blowing. That dude is DEEP!

And so much more about talking apes and talking humans.
    What a great comentary.

His jacket seemed way too shredded!
I'm looking at it an I'm thinking . . . okay, he got a few things burning the outer jacket so he takes it off, and underneath he got his stylishly pre-ripped punk rock one.

.htmlOkay, so I've now watched POTA 2001 for a second time on DVD, this time alone in my apartment with my surround sound and 32" TV.  You guys probably aren't going to believe this, but I find this movie improving each time I see it.  It's still not what I wanted Fox to do, and it's not great, but it's not as bad as I thought the first time.  I'm noticing subtleties of performance and picking up lines dialogue I missed the first couple of times that make it play much better.

I put the DVD on thinking I'll only get a few minutes into this thing then just jump over to listen to Burton's commentary, but instead I just watched the whole through -- and was reasonably entertained.  You know it wouldn't have taken much to make this film a lot better; more sophisticated dialogue on the nature of man and his society, and a lot of work on the internal logic of the story, plus a stronger third act.  But I must admit now it's not the complete disaster I thought it was.   But it's no where near the original, that's for sure.  I also think Burton did as good a job of directing it as the script would allow.  The script was the problem here, AND the female chimp look.  Now I need to go listen to Burton's commentary.

I watched the original last night.  When I first put it on I thought for some reason, "Oh God, I can't watch this right now -- I've seen it so many times."   But I just let it run and before I knew it I was totally into it again.  Now there's a great movie.

Well, at least I know I can look at this new movie from now on without throwing up.  I can't say how many times I'm going to want to watch this thing, but whatever.   Let's hope if there's a sequel it's much better.

I was also in a Blockbuster today.  They had 28 copies of POTA 2001 on DVD.  All except three were checked-out.  But, they must have had 50 VHS copies and nearly all of those were not checked- out.  I think that may say something about the growing popularity of DVDs.

I went to my video store today, taking back some movies, and I asked about
the POTA 2001 banner they had hanging up. The clerk said I could have it. So
I now own a sweet looking POTA banner. The only problem was that the people
who hung it up used super glue or something to stick it to the counter and
parts were ripped while taking it off. I'm going to my other store in town
tomorrow and ask if I can have their banner and hopefully it won't be glued
and rip. You guys should all try to do the same if you are interested in it.
Both video stores here are locally owned and aren't branchs so I don't know
if Blockbuster or Hollywood video would give them away.

Nah, the one thing I like most about the new movie . . . is it's new.
When I've seen it as many times as the old one, we'll see what I think of it then.
My feelings for the moment remain the same.  It's not bad.  It's just not great.

I didn't say I like it as much as I said I don't hate it.  I HATED IT before, now, seeing it reduced to just another movie on DVD it's not so bad, but like you said, it's not great.  It definately has problems.  I think what eventually will be my opinion of it is that it's boring.  I started listening to the Burton commentary and I could see where large parts of it will become dull with repeated viewings.  There isn't enough to sustain interest over, say, thirty years, as with the original.  One thing I was thinking about it the first time I watched the DVD is how much the movie is like "Planet of the Apes meets The Wizard of OZ."  Now I hear Burton say in his commentary that for his hunt scene the flying monkeys scene in "Oz" was very much on his mind.  It figures.

Another thing that Burton says is that the apes in this movie are still in a state of evolution. And that's why we see that these apes have more animal behavior than in the original. And that the humas are still in a state of de-evoluion and that's why they don't seem very bright and don't say much.

Burton says in the end, in another 500 to 1000 years, this world will become as it is in the original (a complete reversal) Apes more like man, man more like apes.

Now for me, I think that's pretty clever. And a whole new aproach in creating something new. This comentary you'll find in the scene where Thade is about to put the human brand mark on Ari in the tent.

In my opinion, this film is now where near nor better than the original. But a very well and thought out film. And with great visuals as Wahlberg and egg. I'ts a very cool!

I saw the hunt scene as "a Wizard of Oz" nightmare the first time I saw it. And even the Thade makeup tests, what, a year ago, reminded me of that. I think Burton's mind is a big culture processor that takes things in and weaves them into his own thing. I don't think even he knows all the things his work references. His gift is rearranging what others originate.

I think the problem with the movie is there's no dramatic tension. There is in the opening scenes and from Ape City on he undermines himself. Even Wahlberg doesn't seem all that worried. It's one of those "greatest hits" albums. It's 'Planet of the Apes' greatest hits instead of a legit album. You know how you're waiting for a band's new album and instead they come out with a compilation, maybe remastered, sounding better than ever, but old ground.

Well, I also have that book, and truthfully, I didn't think it was anything to write home about either.

Glancing at the "POTA Chronicles" a little more, I can see why you weren't too impressed with it, but still, it's better than "The Unofficial Companion". Talk about grasping at straws...I mean look at that book, chapter 9 ("There's no business like monkey business")is one of the biggest wastes of paper I have ever seen in a book that's supposed to be about Apes. Chapter 8 and 11 are no picnic either...and the whole text in the movies section is basically all rehash too, too many old reviews etc...and what isn't rehashed basically is very, very amatuerish writing..I mean c'mon,"The Quotable Apes"!?(By the way, "rehashed" lines from the films...what a bunch of crap.)

And you mentioned the good pictures in the "Unofficial" book. Again, nothing to write home about. I know the author wasn't allowed access to Fox's archives or whatever, but still, he probably could have gotten his hands on some better Apes photos, not just the unmade up actors pics. He might as well not have had any pics in it at all.

I still like to watch the new movie cause it's fun. Aside from the
obvious problems of horrible editing, bad script and bad female
chimp make up. The set in the forests and Ape City just make me
cringe because they look so much like studio sets. The
cinematography and action is so much better in the desert scenes
      when the apes attack.

I know a lot of you must have had the TV series on bootlegged VHS
copies, but I am enjoying the *hell* out of the new DVD release. I
only vaguely remember seeing these as a kid so I was thrilled to get
to watch the episodes again. They are heavy handed and dumb but in an
entertaining way. My fav episode so far is "The Good Seed."

It's one of those "greatest hits" albums. It's 'Planet of the Apes' greatest hits instead of a legit album. You know how you're waiting for a band's new album and instead they come out with a compilation, maybe remastered, sounding better than ever, but old ground.

Totally agree, whatever dramatic tension it might develop gets undercut again and again by the less-than-serious approach and too rapid pacing, also, in another "Oz" reference, Wahlberg's Leo Davidson can be looked at as Dorothy in that all he wants to do is get home.

I really hope that Burton doesn't do the sequel.  I can see that what we have here is pretty much his 'take' on the material, and it isn't really successful.  I hope the 'brains' at Fox are thinking, "Ok, we've done this, now for the sequel let's try a completely different approach."  And hopefully that will mean someone else getting a stab at it.

"POTA Chronicles" doesn't have any pictures at all. Half the book is a
straight reprint of "Cinefantastique" (which is good if you don't have that
issue but not exactly inventive). And what little writing the author does is
bland and uninvolving. At least "Unofficial" is actually by the author and
he shows some enthusiasm for the subject. There are some mistakes but they
all have those, including Russo's. "Unofficial" is well organized,
comprehensive and fun. Russo's is the best, then "Unoficial", then
"Chronicles". I still haven't found the book Rory raved about ("Tales of the
      POTA"?). - - - - Jeff

chapter 9 ("There's no business like monkey business")is one of the biggest
wastes of paper I have ever seen in a book that's supposed to be about Apes.
Chapter 8 and 11 are no picnic either...and the whole text in the movies
section is basically all rehash too, too many old reviews etc...and what
isn't rehashed basically is very, very amatuerish writing..I mean c'mon,"The

Yes, originally I was thinking, "Well, unless he's totally isolated (probably not considering the comments he made against Fox) he knows the criticisms and will correct in the sequel. Give him another shot". But listening to his commentary I don't think he CAN do it differently. The point of the first one was to see what a Burton "Apes" would look like, and we've seen that. Let them segue with Burton as producer and get a guy in there who can do sci-fi. Of course, there's the possibility the next guy will be worse (or Joel Shumacher). Judging from the commentary it doesn't sound like Burton even wants to do the sequel. They don't even need Wahlberg. Give him a cameo in the beginning as we establish the New Earth and the "surprise ending" finishes his story arc. Focus on new characters and do Boulle's novel for the 40th anniversary.

I cannot agree. To me "Unofficial" is just a slapped together attempt to cash in and make a quick buck (I'm getting the feeling you feel that way about "POTA Chronicles", and I can't say I'd disagree with you on that one.) However, if you think reading about "Magilla Gorilla" or "Lancelot Link" is better than reading McDowall's (reprinted) interview, more power to you. And as far as enthusiasm by Hofstede, I certainly don't see it. To me the book reads as if he were given an assignment in school, and this is what he came up with. It's a cash in on the hype book all the way. There are some mistakes but they
all have those, including Russo's. "Unofficial" is well organized,
      comprehensive and fun.
Well, it's not anything earth shattering, and it sure doesn't say anything that hasn't been written before. I know you'll say "Neither does 'Chronicles' ", and I did give you that point already. Both books are what they are, and neither is anything great. By the way, you mentioned that "At least 'Unofficial' had pictures in it..." Are you so enthused by those pictures because you're featured in some of them??J/K!!! Russo's is the best, then "Unoficial", then "Chronicles". I'd switch "Chronicles" and "Unofficial" around, but yeah, I'll agree with you that of the lot, Russo's is the best.

Call me old fashioned, but I'd like to think that a movie shouldn't need the

I believe you, Rory! One thing that struck me about the film was that it
would probably improve slightly (though still be extremely flawed) on repeat
viewings. Of course, the ending still won't make any sense...

      > I'm noticing subtleties of performance and

I can't say I spotted any subtleties of performance the one time that I did
see it, but as I've said on this list before - one of the things that the
ending has in its favour is that for the first time in the whole film
Wahlberg actually looks genuinely shocked and scared. Shame it took until
the final scene to do so, most people probably didn't care by then.

      > I also think Burton did as good a job of directing it as

That's my opinion too. Script was the biggest flaw, female make-up was poor
(but then I wasn't that impressed with any of the make-up to be honest) and
as was just pointed out, the soundstage sets looked like exactly that -
      soundstages.

There was definitely too much interference - seems that the bigwigs wanted
Burton to make their film, but not make a Burton film. Pointless.

Yeah, I'm STILL waiting for my copy to show up from Amazon. But I do have the
other books. I agree with most of the comments posted already. I think
overall, Russo's book is the most professional of the bunch so far, obviously
a labour of love and some amazing pictures. The Unofficial companion ( brought
to you by the author of 'The Dukes of Hazard Unofficial companion"..and that
should be your first warning ) is O.K but there are too many mistakes and
using a shot of Heston between takes on Ben Hur and saying it was from POTA is
just inexcusable. Also, the type is spread out as to make the book thicker. It
probably could have been half that size. I guess they have to make it a
certain amount of pages to justify the cover price? I can't complain too much,
as the author did send me a complimentary copy as I responded to his questions
in the fandom section. Ape Chronicles has a nice illustrated cover but really
      doesn't offer anything new.
      Best,

That way, those that don't want to read it, can just delete it, knowing it's not the subject of the group.

While I'm not sure if anything like that is stated in this groups guidelines, I think it'd be a fairly good idea to follow. I mean, personally, I really don't care to read about SW Episode 2, or the debates about evolution that we had in here awhile back.

But the only trouble with doing that in this group is that I tend to see replies attached to subjects that have nothing to do with the subject that was originally being discussed. Example would be lets say the subject was Apes on DVD or something like that...Then there will be someone's comments attached to that subject, yet it will be for a totally different subject. I guess I would like to see the comments made being attached to the subject being discussed in the post, and not something that isn't in line with the subject header.

I am certainly not trying to tell anyone how to post... These are just my thoughs on this subject, and I'd like to know how others in here feel about it. But, I know from now on, I'm going to try to post in the way I just said above. It seems to be working well in the other egroup I'm in, and I think it would work well in here.

One more thing in the other egroups guidelines, they ask that when you post a reply, to actually show what you're replying to. I'm all for that one for sure. It really makes no sense sometimes when you'll get a one line posting, and you have no idea what the posted line is in reference to.

Yes, and excuse me if I say "who gives a toss?" about the imagery - the
final cut stinks. It doesn't take a genius to represent new life with an
egg - my kids do that every Easter. Burton should have spent more time on
what matters - plot and a GENUINE shock ending.

I hope the sequel incorporates "thriller" themes or is just a version of
      Boulle's book.
