Some of us could die before then. Unlike
laser discs, which were truly expensive and I didn't buy them, DVDs are
reasonably priced. I don't regret buying the VHSs of the movies I now have on
DVD. I enjoyed them while I could. Also, there's some very cool extras on laser
that they may never put on DVD. It's all based on the whim of the public what
gets released.

Welcome, Darren. My disc 4 has the same thing and I didn't
get mine from Amazon, I got it from Suncoast. So if it's a problem, it's in
the manufacturing. I thought it meant there was no information on that part
of the disc (that disc only has 2 episodes and no extras). Sometimes I
wonder if companies pre-ruin their discs so down the road we have to buy the
movies again. If it's true that DVDs "last a lifetime" and don't wear out
like VHS (though personally I've never worn out a VHS after almost 20 years)
then they lose money in the long run. Though I hear DVDs are rendered
useless if they get scratches on them.

I'll bet that in only ten
years we'll be buying movies on a format with higher resolution than DVDs.
I don't know if that format will still be on disc, or if an entire movie
will be digitally stored on a chip, but high-definition TV is getting really
close now, so the current DVD standard is going to have to change. Maybe
we shouldn't be buying so many DVDs (and believe me guys I wasted enough money
already on laserdiscs) and instead just save our money for the goodies to come
-- 16X9 HD TVs and such.

I don't regret the laserdisc I bought (well not most of them anyway). For me I got into laserdiscs back in 1987 when the restored version of "Frankenstein" was available ONLY on laserdisc. I bought that disc before I even had a player (I got someone who did have a player make a VHS copy for me.), the a company called Criterion put out the original "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" on laserdisc "letterboxed." For me, a real movie nut, that was it, I had to have my favorite films on laserdisc. Luckily I didn't have a larger income, otherwise I'd have spent a lot more on those things. I also came to realize that most of the laserdiscs I just 'had to have' sat unwatched for years after I'd viewed them just two or three times. In fact, most of the laserdiscs I still have, probably around a hundred, I rarely watch except for a handful of my VERY favorite movies. This is the reason I've
tried to 'cool it' as much as possible with the DVDs. Unfortunately DVDs are so relatively cheap, $15 to $30, so sometimes it's hard to resist buying something. But thank goodness there are DVD rental options. Ummm. . . why am I talking so much about this?

Rory,
I think unlike Laser Discs (nobady really bought players except the real enthusiasts), DVD is taking off and the market should mean that like VHS (and unlike Beta), there will always be a place for it.
I could be wrong.......
I think there's a pretty good chance DVDs will completely replace VHS as the rental format of choice in maybe as little as the next five years, BUT people will still want to be able to record stuff off TV for time-shifting purposes. Will VHS fall by the wayside to be replaced by T-VO or recordable DVDs? I don't think so. There's a lot of VHS recorders out there and a lot of people very happy with them. VHS will hang on for a while longer. But I think by decade's end there will be a higher-resolution video format (HD DVDs?) that the high-end geeks will have to have and may bring the era of the current DVD format to an end, though by that time there will, like VHS, be a lot of people with DVD players and DVD collections out there -- and very happy with them. But all this depends a lot on how the world economy goes in the next ten years. Stay alive and we'll all see what happens.

.html I have the Terry Hayes script. I'll have to check but I believe that the
female chimp character (there seems to only be one female chimp main
character in every Apes story) was called Zora. I'm not sure about her being
a dominatrix, but I don't think she was the kind loving soul the females are
usually portrayed as. I'll try and dig it out give you a more detailed
character analysis unless someone else has a copy handy. I think that was
one of the reasons I didn't care much for the script. That and that
ridiculous AIDs babies plot line. <.html

In a way, we did see Urko attempt a coup...in "The Cure". Towards the end it's not so much Urko vs. Zoran...it's Urko vs. the High Council. It's covered in more detail in the novel than the actual episode. Lines from the novelization include: "If the circumstances were not settled quickly, Zaius and the council would be dead, and Urko would assume all the powers and priviliges of dictator. The gorillas would receive the special status they had sought for hundreds of years." and also,"The real horror lurking behind the scenes here was the potential of Urko wrestling all the power and all control of apes and human beings everywhere."
Even Galen has some idea of what's going on when he says "If Zoran loses, Urko wins. More authority, more freedom to run things the way he wants. Urko wants power to do things his way, and it's not a very nice way.'<.html

Very nice Ryan.
Keep up the good work. If it's one thing I don't miss about hosting, that's
the hard work. But it is in itself very rewarding.
Being creative is a very cool thing!

Fox has not decided to release the DVD of the TV Series down here.
A friend of mine who is also in this group (Ken Taylor) worked at Fox and he
designed a lot of the Aussie release POTA covers (including the VHS TV

.html"Total Movie" magazine (Dec/Jan 2002) has an interview with David Prior,
the dude that produced the Burton "Apes" DVD (also the acclaimed "Fight
Club" and "Die Hard" ones). The big question is how to you produce a big 2
disc DVD 4 months after the movie hit theatres. The answer: very carefully.
It's a given now that blockbusters hit big and fall off fast (even "Harry
Potter" dropped 58%). This is the way it's going to be, open in a mass of
theatres and hype the hell out of it so people will see it the first
weekend. "Apes" made almost half it's U.S. money it's first weekend. So now
studios want faster turn around time from theatre to video (perhaps people
will buy a movie they wouldn't ordinarily buy because, hey, it was JUST in
theatres). I guess "X-Men" was the ice breaker, going to DVD quick and
raking in the dough. According to the article "Apes" ' 4 months is something
of a record but I thought "Final Fantasy" was quicker. Maybe not.
Anyway, for "Apes" Prior says the material for the DVD was scheduled for 3
days after the film's release but "I haven't made my due dates in a long
time, as anyone at Fox will no doubt woefully attest, so we went a little
over. But it was for the benefit of the disc. In any event, it wasn't more
than 2 weeks late". It's no longer, "Apes" did well, let's do a special
edition . These things are planned before a movie is even filmed. That's why
Fox is doing a 2 disc set for that Michael douglas thriller from August, so
forgetable I can't even remember the title. Prior found the going easier
because he had an obvious focus for the extras: the makeup, the design, etc.
But there's also something to be said for hindsight and I think things are
perhaps getting too speeded up, and perhaps some thought is missing from
these corporate wonders. Any opinions?

.html.html Any opinions? Well, first, I subscribe to this damn mag, so where's my issue?!!! But, ayway, who was it I read just said (I think Billy Bob Thorton) that movies by the studios today aren't really movies -- they're not about characters and their development -- instead they're rides or just movie junk food, a quick entertainment fix, soon forgotten then on to the next one. Yeah, that's pretty much it. And it makes me wonder why get excited about an APES 2 or anything these days? I don't know. Thank God for the classic films.

Both 1968's "Planet of the Apes" and 1939's "The Wizard of Oz" have a protagonist that becomes unconscious near the beginning of the story, have cornfields, and feature special creative makeups.

And if you watch "Planet of the Apes" back
to back with the Simpsons' musical version you even get songs.
Speaking of makeup, in '98 Scott
Essman did a tribute to the makeup artists of the "Wizard of Oz" and had it on
John Chambers' birthday. I designed the cake for John which was an evolutionary
chart that showed the "Oz" monkeys and then POTA as a logical succession. And
there were lots of folks dressed up as "Oz" characters, including a flying
monkey that posed with John. So the Oz - "Apes" connection is real to
me.

Dark Side of the Moon, actually, and yep -- it's true! A friend of mine
and I tried it out last year, and it's pretty damn cool.
>Where do you start playing the Wall from - is it just after the lion roars?
Some say after the second roar, others after the third. We found tha
everything synched better after the third. The interesting thing is that
it doesn't just play through once -- it plays through three times! In
other words, when the CD ends, pause the DVD at the exact moment the
heartbeats on the last song end, then start the CD and DVD again at the
same time. The music still matches! Even more bizarre... you can do it a
third time and it STILL matches! <.html

How's this for a speculation? The helmet worn by Urko (in 3085) had
paint on it for a reason: so the 'glyph' on it could be more easily
"read" by some ape who's not close enough to see the various component
symbols the glyph is comprised of. This very same helmet is passed
down, General-to-General, over the course of the next 870 years... and
so, in 3955, Ursus wears this same helmet--and the paint has long
since worn off over the centuries. While your idea here is not totally
out of the question, I'd say no. I mean I'm sure they could very
easily just make new helmets for their various gorilla leaders over
the centuries. Come to think of it, even Urko must have more than one
helmet himself. "Why?", well look at the episode 'The Trap'...he loses
his helmet as he and Burke fall into the subway, and does not have it
in the rest of the show, yet he has a helmet in later episodes. So,
unless Zako picked it up before he left the city (and gave it back to
Urko,) they must have other helmets around that are easily accessable.
And also, I'm sure there is not just one helmet for the entire Ape
kingdom, because there are at least 2 populations, west coast (tv) and
east coast (Planet and Beneath.) And I'm sure there is more than one
general in command at one time. (At least one for each heavily
populated area of their nation)...It's just that Urko and "later"
Ursus are the top commanders in the settings the various stories take
place, so we actually see them. But, as with you, this is speculation
on my part. Perhaps the plated armor worn by Ursus was contrived AFTER
the time of Urko. Is it, one wonders, bullet-proof? As to the
armor...perhaps it is just a later design created for subsequent
generals...Or, maybe it is that way because Urko would just be the
rank of general, while the warlord Ursus could be the equivalent of a
4 star general, and because of his even higher ranking, his outfit
would show this by being more elaborate. And as for it being bullet
proof, this I know isn't so, just look at Beneath....Ursus gets shot
(and killed) by Brent.
Good point regarding "The Trap"; I'll have to check again as to
whether or not Urko--after his horse throws him--still has his helmet
on when he & Burke fall into the BART station.
As for the "bullet-proof" plated armor--perhaps it was INTENDED to be
bullet proof, yet was NOT sufficiently so. Maybe the rifle was loaded
with 'armor-piercing' bullets; remember, Brent shoots Ursus with a
gorilla soldier's rifle and, since "Ape shall never kill Ape" Ursus,
perhaps, doesn't think he has anything to fear from an ape's rifle.
Incidentally, the 'armor' worn by Ursus seems identical to the costume
worn by one of the Norman (? Viking?) soldiers in "The War Lord"
(directed by Franklin Schaffner, starring Chuck Heston & Maurice
Evans). Check it out and see if I'm right--when I watched that flick,
it sure looked like what Ursus wore in "Beneath".
In regards to the "two populations" of apes (East coast and West
coast--sounds like the damn 'rap' scene!), granted that in BATTLE and
POTA TV there is an ape civilization in the California area and that
in PLANET & BENEATH there is an ape civilization in the New York/New
Jersey area--but we have no way of knowing if the civilization in
California flourished until 3955. As for the NY/NJ area, we know from
Cornelius' findings at the Cave (and his culture's 'sacred' history)
that the Sacred Scrolls were written 1200 years prior to 3955 (i.e.
circa 2755), and that about a century before that there was "a stage
of primitive barbarism" involving "carnivorous gorillas" (circa
2650's), whereas the "more ancient" and "more advanced" culture (i.e.
OUR culture) predated THAT by "some 700 years, roughly".
So, at some point, the flourishing culture in California either sent
out colonial groups across North America, or a mass exodus of Apes
left California for the NY/NJ area some time after 3085. Note that
both cultures speak the SAME language (no dialectical divergence, as
happened when Latin-speaking peoples in Europe formed their own
'Romance' languages: Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, etc.), and
wear the SAME style of clothing, using the same "glyph" symbols on
their garb. It is never mentioned (in PLANET & BENEATH) that the NY
area is the ONLY area the Lawgiver's civilization inhabited (the John
Huston 'Lawgiver'--who doesn't hate humanity the way the author of the
Sacred Scrolls does--teaches/preaches to a group of integrated Apes &
Humans in 2670 near a statue of Caesar (whose history is later hidden
by the Zaius-types, those "in-the-know", who had access to "history
scrolls kept hidden from the masses" ["ESCAPE"].
I think there was some sort of mass-migration 'eastwards' post-3085
and pre-3955, accounting for the nearly identical details (of language
and clothing style, etc.). And, remember, there has to be a reason for
the presence of the Alpha Omega bomb in NYC in 3955--despite the fact
that in BATTLE it was in Kolp's possession in Breck's city, which was
on the west coast (being a coastal city--receiving shipments of apes
at a harbor); John Jakes' novelization references the west-coast/
California info in the opening chapter.
Why does the Mendez group of mutants migrate from the California area
to the NY/NJ area? Perhaps a natural disaster (say, a meteor strike in
the Pacific Ocean?) and/or an all-out race war (resulting in the
worsening treatment of humans, from slaves to animals) involving not
only Apes & Humans, but also those dwelling 'beneath' the surface...
The novel I'm working on (which DOES treat the movies & TV (live-
action) series as 'canon'--though NOT the cartoon) will go into more
detail regarding all this (including the curious detail that the "full
moon" is visible during the episode "The Liberator"--yet in 3955,
although Cornelius mentions a "high tide" that prevents traveling
along the shore of the river leading to the sea/ocean, Dodge laments
the "cloud cover at night... that strange luminosity... yet THERE'S NO
MOON" !!!
What could possibly happen to the Moon between 3085 and 3955 so as to
cause it to disappear from sight (neither Taylor nor his crewmen are
able to see it) yet still exert a gravitational tidal effect ("high
tide") on Earth's bodies of water?
In my novel's plot, the Moon is going to be purposely converted into a
black hole. As to WHO does it, WHY it is done, etc. well, provided I
ever finish the damn thing and get it published, you'll just have to
wait (at least, for MY speculation/scenario)! <.html

I saw the last 40 minutes or so. Man! John Chambers (like Alan Turing

We've covered this before, but I don't think there was a west coast ape
civilisation until the TV series. There may well have been one line or
something like that in the Battle novelisation, but I'd be tempted to
disregard it, because there is certainly nothing in the films to suggest
that Conquest or Battle took place there.
I know Rory loves to point out the intricate inconsistencies of the
geography in relation to NY, but even so I still believe it makes far more
sense to assume that Conquest/Battle took place in the east.

Actually, it was #1 again. But part of the reason is that the "Grinch" sales
are split between the pan and scan and widescreen versions. Dvdfile.com says
the pan and scan version is selling about twice as many as widescreen,
probably because that's the version kids watch. "Apes" is not so
kid -friendly.

This portion of my post has nothing to with apes,
but thought someone here could help me out!
My wife is a huge fan of actress Lea Thompson and
collects all her clippings. We accidentally lost the edition of National
Enquirer that featured a photo of her two weeks ago (the issue dated December 4
with Prince William on the cover). If anyone can send me a scan of this
pic outside the group, I'd certainly appreciate it.
This portion of my post does deal with Apes!

Oh, well that was the last time this month they'll be showing it, but I'll let you know in advance if it's going to be on next month (I get the AMC mag.).
Someone must have taped it. I should have when it was on last time, but it didn't have much Apes in it.

I was actually going to reply to Patrick Michael Tilton's VERY long email this mourning, but having to go through all the reasons why it makes more sense that CONQUEST and BATTLE took place near the EAST coast, and that only ESCAPE and the TV series take place on the West coast, made me so tired before I hardly began that I just gave up. I guess it just comes down to this: everybody keep POTA in your own way and look at it in whatever pleases you. I know what I think, and what I think is more important to me than anything anybody else thinks.

I shall

Well, as you may also notice, the vast majority of the group doesn't seem to respond to anything. A long posting or a short posting seems to go unnoticed and unreplied to. I think this would also be something that would be a nice change of pace: If the other group members actually posted every now and then. Not only would we have some (possibly) new ideas to kick around that'd keep the conversations going in here, but we'd also get to know what others think. Whether we'd agree with them or not isn't the point here, the point is "Let's keep the group from getting to the point of stagnation that it seems to be heading toward". It seems that (and I've said in the past as well,) there are only a few of us that post, and I'd like if more did. And as to what you said about the long postings being difficult to respond to: Well, while you may not have the time to reply to the entire posting, you can take a section out and reply to it that way
as well.
Come on Rory, this is a CHAT group. Whether or not you influence people or change their minds, the idea is certainly to discuss - so let's rap! Well put! While it may seem most good posting are posted in vain, I try to keep the group going when and where I can, though most of the time anything I say is left unnoticed. And that's another thing I think Rory was trying to say here: That he'd like to see the group go on as well, but he doesn't always like to be the one bringing up new topics, etc....I'd have to agree. There are currently 104 members in this group, yet it seems like only 10% post at all. Where are the others?!?! I think it'd help the group out a lot if the others came out of the woodwork and actually posted from time to time.

So
let's start with Planet......
What
UNRELEASED stuff is out there by way of TV Spots, Trailers, Interviews, Talk
Shows, Deleted Scenes, Outtakes??
Eventually I plan to send a list to Fox and say "Why isn't this
stuff on the DVD? Does it still exist?".

Was the "Pregnant Nova" scene ever FILMED? I know there are
photos......
****
What other deleted scenes may exist for "Planet"?
I
suggest we all attempt to respond, even if your response is to copy and paste
"I don't know", then we can have a show of those present on the
list.

Well, here I am responding to you. This is definitely the type of thing I'd like to see in here more often. Good choice for a subject .
Anyway, as far as unreleased footage goes, I myself don't know off too much other than the little bits that were in the NATO feature / featurettes. BUT, I have also heard of a scene of the astronauts in the Forbidden Zone setting under the dew collector (later worn by Dodge when they are in the cornfield scenes.) I did not get it clear as to whether or not he only has this as a still or if he has actual footage of it. Next time I contact him, I will re-ask him about this just to make sure I didn't misunderstand him.
As far as the pregnancy scene, while I, like you, have seen photos, I am not sue if it was filmed. My guess would be "Yes" it was. I suppose its possible that they would just take pics, but why bother doing that? I mean if you're all set up to shoot the scene, you might as well film it then too.
Well, I did think of a few more little bits that weren't included (again, I've only seen pictures of these.) There was a scene that took place after Lucius and Zira helped Taylor and Nova escape. They were stopped by some hunters and told they need to commandeer their wagon, and Lucius tells them to stay away because the beasts in their wagon are rabid. After hearing that, the gorillas let the pass. Another bit is Lucius asking Cornelius who put the scarecrows up. Cornelius says "The hunt club." to which Lucius asks "To scare humans?" and Cornelius repling "To scare us too, we're entering the Forbidden Zone." I've seen this last bit mentioned in both the comic adaption, as well as the back of one of the movie cards. (In the comic, he asks Zira, on the card, he asks Cornelius.)
So that is some possibly unreleased footage to add to the list for Planet.
As far as Beneath, I know the entire Ursus speech wasn't incuded, so that's a start right there. There was also a (possible) scene of Ursus, Zauis, and the minister debating the invasion. As before, this was in the comic adaption, and may not have been shot at all.
Escape: I know of the scene at the beginning of the Ape-O-Nauts in the ship. As for any other footage, who knows?
The other 2...Well, we know that Conquest was to be different, so I'm sure that footage exists from that. (After all, he had to cut a lot to make it PG. Who knows what was left on the cutting room floor. Maybe just more bloody revolt scenes, maybe additional footage.) As for Battle, I only know of the footage included in tv airings as well as the Japanese video discs. <.html

Although I enjoy reading the various posts ( with the exception of the
bitchy personal attacks ) I don't care much for posting too often as I'm
not really into hypothesizing as to where Urko's helmet came from ( it
was a leftover prop as far as I'm concerned ) or whatever. I just
love APES for what it is and for the impact it had on me as a 12 year old
when I first saw it in '75. Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that
you're all still having fun (emphasis on 'fun' ) with it, I just don't
care to contribute to avoid being labelled as negative or a 'party-pooper'.
Plus, usually the responses I think of are already covered by other, more
pro-active group members.

This bit of business - humans with plague - was later used with McDowall in drag. There's little doubt that it and the pregnancy scene were shot. Were they even sound synched before the higher up had them snipped? To paraphrase the quote ... Lawgiver, who know about the past. And interesting aside, in the shooting script is has Zira throwing up, and Lucius say, "Your mate is sick." to Taylor. In obvious yet interesting typo.

This is actually how I get myself into trouble; trying to make sense out of a series that has huge gaps in logic, and arguing with what others have to say. I do sound negative and that's because basically I love the original movie for the huge affect it had on me when I first saw it as an eight-year-old. Nothing that has come since has evere equalled the impact of the original, and nothing ever will. The rest of the APES phenomenon is very problematic and some of it I simply just don't care for. Even Joe Russo has told me that he's finding watching the TV show on DVD somewhat unpleasant.
Again, I don't have the time right now to say more, so I'll just have to leave it here.

What
do you mean by that comment? If you were directing it toward me, I don't know
why you would. I mean is saying that wanting to see others post every now and
then a bad thing to say? I don't think so. I mean maybe the silent ones
actually have something worthwhile listening to. I mean what's not being said
in here has to be a lot better than a lot of what is said. (Yes, I'm sure that
some in here think my postings are worthless, but hey, at least I make an
effort to keep it on topic, and I try to be serious about it.)

There was a scene
that took place after Lucius and Zira helped Taylor and Nova escape. They were
stopped by some hunters and told they need to commandeer their wagon, and
Lucius tells them to stay away because the beasts in their wagon are rabid.
After hearing that, the gorillas let the pass.
This
bit of business - humans with plague - was later used with McDowall in
drag. There's little doubt that it and the pregnancy scene were
shot. Were they even sound synched before the higher up had them
snipped? To paraphrase the quote ... Lawgiver, who know about the
past. And interesting aside, in the shooting script is has Zira throwing
up, and Lucius say, "Your mate is sick." to Taylor. In obvious yet
interesting typo.

Well, I'm more easygoing about it. I
acknowledge the logic gaps but I just enjoy the concept. And I accept the
limitations (lower budgets on the sequels, having to crank out a TV episode a
week). The chronological gaps are just part of the beast. But what's wrong with
people trying to fill in those gaps? There's no sound in space either, so "Star
Wars" and "Star Trek" are f****d too. At least "Apes" didn't break that one
(until Burton). If they started over and the original was the only one I think
we'd be the poorer for
it.

of the bitchy personal attacks ) I don't care much for posting too often as
I'm not really into hypothesizing as to where Urko's helmet came from ( it
was a leftover prop as far as I'm concerned ) or whatever. I just love
APES for what it is and for the impact it had on me as a 12 year old when I
first saw it in '75. Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that you're all
still having fun (emphasis on 'fun' ) with it, I just don't care to
contribute to avoid being labelled as negative or a 'party-pooper'. Plus,
usually the responses I think of are already covered by other, more
pro-active group members. Best regards, Ken.....The Lurker.
This is actually how I get myself into trouble;
trying to make sense out of a series that has huge gaps in logic, and arguing
with what others have to say. I do sound negative and that's because
basically I love the original movie for the huge affect it had on me when I
first saw it as an eight-year-old. Nothing that has come since has evere
equalled the impact of the original, and nothing ever will. The rest of
the APES phenomenon is very problematic and some of it I simply just don't
care for. Even Joe Russo has told me that he's finding watching the TV
show on DVD somewhat unpleasant.
Again, I don't have the time right

Fox would sure be poorer for it. I don't see anything wrong with filling in the gaps, it's just sometimes I really disagree with the logic of what fans are trying to do.

The DVD of Burton's "Apes" has a feature
called "Nuon enhancement". Well, according to www.dvdfile.com it's creators, VM Labs are
expected to file Chapter 11 this week. The system was never really supported by
DVD makers (except Samsung and Toshiba) or by studios ("Apes", "Dr. Dolittle 2"
and the upcoming "Buckaroo Bonzai" the only recent ones of note). Looks like
it's history, and the "Apes" DVD contain a little footnote to that
history.

This sounds kind of screwy to me, but if true then I guess there's a little of Dr. Milo in Thade.

Was this guy auditioning for the first one?
Maybe that was their plan THEN but after all the criticisms of the script
hopefully they will try a different direction. Back to the Future, Smack to the
Future...let's get back to the spirit of "Planet of the Apes"!
