Tough The Academy Awards are a popularity contest they aren't the only awards
around. So you can't really call it a snub. I just think the film making
community as a whole do not award half-assed film making. Or maybe they're
mad about what was done to a landmark film too. <.html

Not only was Apes shut out of the Oscars (I think
BEAUTIFUL MIND got nominated for makeup because Russell Crowe needs it so bad!)
but today I picked up the last POTA comic book and the merry band of renegades
didn't even get to Ari! They can the book and hint the story may resume,
but it seems unlikely. Now we'll never know why Ari wrote the letter to
Attar! Plus the innevitable unmasking of the "ghost" was a
disappointment. I was counting on a major player being revealed. Oh
well, the story was fun while it lasted. The comic shop I go to has no
news at all on the domestic release of the medicoms, either.

.htmlPOTA is still up for makeup and costumes in the BAFTA awards ( British
Oscars). We'll see how that goes. They've always respected "Apes" more than
we backwards Americans anyway. - - - Jeff

Sorry, Lord T. As I recall, I've always been
an Ari booster. She's my favorite character in the new flick, not that Burton
gave me a choice. It's either her or Thade, depending on how over the top you
like your characters. The other characters are cotton candy. But I liked Ari in
spite of the makeup, not because of it. I thought it ruins the final kiss, which
is supposed to be an emotional moment. But she was Burton's interest and thus
the heart and soul of the flick. I'd welcome her to the
sequel.

Thy...why do you like the "new chimp chicks"? Everybody else

Easy
there, Jeff. Not everyone hates all of them. Ari has grown on
my. Granted I didn't much care for the Bo Derek look they started
with. And they could have certainly done something with the
others. But . . . Don't speak to me in absolutes! The evidence IS

The apes refer to "gods" throughout the TV show, not just in
"Tomorrow's Tide". Probably a way to sugar coat it. Can't have apes
referring to "God" on a kid's show. What would the Bible Belt think? This
way they could say, "See, Jimmy? Those apes don't read their Bible. God has
shunned them". - - - Jeff

When the script was being created in 1999 Leo DiCaprio was Fox's big star.
Had done "Titanic", was doing (the flop) "The Beach" for them. And I think
that's why they knocked down his age ( I heard that was Michael Bay's
suggestion). Then, when they were casting, it was said they were looking for
a DiCaprio type. That's why I was pleased when Wahlberg was cast because I
thought he would go against that type. But the character wound up being
blandly written, so Wahlberg was literally miscast. If he had someone

The makeup sticks out like a sore thumb. It
takes you out of the scene. It's like when Heston does the "Damn them all to

ruined. I'd rather Leo kissed Thade. At least his makeup was

I actually agree with you that Thade had better
makeup than Ari, but I still think that Ari's makeup was good. (Except for the
fact that she didn't have any hair/fur on her neck. I still can't figure that

I don't see it Jeff. Thade had a dead upper lip from Roth's big nose. It looked like he was wearing half a pullover. The only thing that took me out of the scene during The Kiss, was at the end, when she smiled so hard and it pulled up the corners of her mouth. Something a bit more subtle was called for. The sort of thing Kim does so well and Helena seems yet to have mastered. Then again, the original had Chambers on set for every shot, making sure the angles were right, and extra teeth didn't show. But even on the original, when Taylor loops the rope around Zaius' neck Evens pulls his upper lip under his lower lip. It looks . . . very unnatural.<.html

Many chimps have less hair around their necks, though I think it's more of an attempt to make her more attractive than to be anatomically correct. And hair under the chin is the real "Chinese water torture" of the makeup, and Helena says. You'll notice in the originals Zira no longer has the chin piece in the second and third. Possibly a condition of Kim's reprisal of the role.

Didn't Zaius have a line in the original that went something like, "The greatest ape of all, our Lawgiver"? That would imply there was only one Lawgiver in the film series. The Lawgiver in BATTLE isn't the manhating one mentioned in PLANET because of the changes in history brought about by the arrival of the apeonauts in 1973 (but then some of you don't agree there's two timelines in the original five films). And as far as the TV show goes, it's not really part of the same universe as the film series, but should only be looked upon as "further adventures among the monkeys" BASED on BATTLE more than any of the other movies.

I put the TV show in the same timeline as
"Planet and Beneath" (since the apes take over after 1991, it's oviously not a
continuation of "Conquest"). Centuries separate the show form the movies so I
assume their religion changed to a belief in one "God". The apes in the movies
were then geologically separated by time from the rest of ape society (TV show
is on the West Coast, movies on the East) which evolved culturally while the
movie culture stagnated. That would make a good ape movie. Set it at the time of
Taylor, but explore the rest of ape society. Maybe start it with some ape
travelers finding the Statue of L. - - Jeff

Yes, it was definitely based on Ancient

The Lawgiver in BATTLE isn't the manhating one mentioned in PLANET because of the changes in history brought about by the arrival of the apeonauts in 1973 (but then some of you don't agree there's two timelines in the original five films). And as far as the TV show goes, it's not really part of the same universe as the film series, but should only be looked upon as "further adventures among the monkeys" BASED on BATTLE more than any of the other movies.
That's how I'll always look at it.
-- Rory
In the fan fic for the tv series that I'm writing, I decided to have it both ways. SInce the original POTa movie says the Scrolls came about 1200 yrs ago, that would make it approx 300 years prior to the time of the POTA series. So I decided to say that basically, some of the apes (primarily the rural areas) still believe in gods, while the city apes have mainly latched on to the Scrolls as the new religion grows. This is why ape does not kill ape is not such a big deal yet, either.
I'm going by the two timeline thing, by the way. Sorry if this isn't coherent enough for you - I'm in a hurry.

I
think of it as similar to the pope being referred to as "the holiest man of
all" - and there are plently of them. Some were even murderers and
tyrants!
I
still don't know about the two timelines, but I am leaning towards Rory's
interpretation (although I must say that even if the scriptwriters of Battle DID
intend us to go with the 2 timelines theory, maybe the scriptwriter for Conquest
didn't even think about it!!!).
And
the two space ships existing at the same time? With all the flubs they
made, it could be just another one.

Hey don't laugh. We've had more of a musical influence than you might think. Some of you might remember an article several years ago about Seattle Grunge bands Nirvana, Sound Garden, The Melvins etc... And who did they name as their musical influences? The 13th Floor Elevators, The Butthole Surfers, and my brother's band Scratch Acid. All Texas bands! And where do you think they got the idea of wearing plaid flannel shirts? What the hell else is a Texan punk gonna wear when playing that cold damp town? That's all we have with long sleeves! The Seattle Sound is really just a rip-off of The Texas Sound! And if it weren't for The Big Boys inventing Punk Funk and touring California there wouldn't even be a Red Hot Chili Peppers! And let's not forget Ministry and The Toadies! Rev. Horton Heat. Many don't even know they're from here ... The list is long! And the SXSW Conferences and
Festivals in Austin is the largest in the world. My friends The Damned will be there! Yes, I think Texas would have a great influence on Ape music. And Waylon, Jerry Jeff and Willie salute you!<.html

Well well well.

I can see you all didn't :o)
Well first of all, hello to everyone on the
group!
I'm baaaack...:o)
Listen Guys and Gals the DVDs are coming along most
excellent. Right now I'm developing a 2 disc set DVD on Planet of the Apes
2001.
It will contain over 4 hours of Televised Ape stuff
not released on the official DVD. See a sneak peek of it at mt site at: www.calima5021.com
Soon after I'll be working on the Cartoon DVDs and
Battle UNcut and direct from my Laser Disc Collection no longer in
print.
But now the Original Planet of the Apes Exclusives
will be a bit tricky because like everyone else here, my tapes are in pretty bad
quality, and when you digitize them to MPEG 2 (DVD format) it gets even worst.
Believe it or not, because the computer picks up and increases every
defect. So theres really no point. Unless of course any of you have any POTA
Original (non VHS, DVD Exclusives) in good quality. the type of quality that
doesn't make your VCR jump and wiggle.
And of course you'll receive a free copy of the DVD
once made, along with any more exclusives sent my way. These DVDs will have full
intors and menus like any official DVD. right now this two disc set I'm creating
on POTA 2001 will be on sale in march for $30.00, only because the DVD blanks
are gonig for 7.99 each. But as the price gets cheaper on DVD blanks, so will my
DVDs of course.
The one on the site is just a prototype, and the
final release in March will have full details and menus in mpeg clips, so that
all of you will have first hand in seeing how well they've come
out.
I was forced to return to this old e-mail because
clalima5021@... was freaking

It's been a nightmare trying to reach you all at

You're making an assumption that the Apes, who never got beyond an
18th century level of development, would keep historical records with
the accuracy of 21th century technology, over a period of 2,000 years. <.html

It will not be marked by the chiming of any clocks or the ringing of

As the clock ticks over from 8.01pm on Wednesday, February 20, time

It is an event which has happened only once before, and is something

Here's an even quicker connection for you: Kim Hunter co-starred in PLANET OF THE APES, which was scored by Jerry Goldsmith, who also did the score for THE RIVER WILD which co-starred Kevin Bacon.

Finally, the makeup branch must hate Rick Baker. Jealous much? Although Baker won last year for his work on How the Grinch Stole Christmas, a mediocre film at best, he received no nod for his work on Planet of the Apes. That's what we call a diss on the streets. Okay, so he has won six Oscars already and been nominated for a few more, but he deserves it.
And Hollywood Bitchslap gave Apes a few nods as well

That would still be 2 degrees. Kim and Kevin may have even been at
the same Holiday party together(which would be one degree), but
that's not how the game is played. Nor is it played with Directors,
Composers, Screenwriters or other behind the camera people. It's
played by linking actors appearing on screen. <.html

Oh, but we're talking about Kim Hunter! Make-up artist Brian
Penikas did up the APEMANIA bunch (as well as himself) and escorted Kim Hunter
into the Academy Theatre and to her seat for the 30th anniversay party in
1998. I think that Zero degrees, ain't it?
Jeff Krueger was there, weren't yah Jeff?
Cheers,
Brian Penikas

Top that.

That would still be 2 degrees. Kim and Kevin may have even been at
the same Holiday party together(which would be one degree), but
that's not how the game is played. Nor is it played with Directors,
Composers, Screenwriters or other behind the camera people. It's
played by linking actors appearing on screen.

.htmlThat's fine. I am undecided and I see merit in both choices. But I refuse
to believe there is a definitive answer. Nor is it a question of one's
intelligence. Both have pros and cons so it is only about what you choose.

I'm going to put the Mego Zira figure next
to the TV and watch the Kevin Bacon scene on the "JFK" DVD. That's as close as
you're going to get because Kim doesn't do movies anymore. Maybe they did a play
together.
